Removal of Cu2+ metal ions from water using Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide and Mg-Fe LDH/5-(3-nitrophenyllazo)-6-aminouracil nanocomposite for enhancing adsorption properties

Consecutive high-performance removal of Cu2+ metal ions and Deltamethrin using multifunctional pyrolysis cuttlebone/cotton fabric nanocomposite

A simple technique was developed for the modification of cotton materials that is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and very effective. Waste Cotton fabrics (WCFs) are loaded with propolis extract (PE) for Cu2+ removal. Then, Cu2+ underwent a pyrolysis process with modified cuttlebone (CB) at 900 °C for 5 h. The surface of the prepared materials was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET, particle sizes, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and zeta potential analysis. The Cu2+ metal ions from an aqueous solution were removed using WCFs/PE, and DLM was subsequently removed using pyro WCFs/PE/Cu/CB. The as-prepared NPs exhibited the face-centered cubic structure of WCFs/PE/Cu/CB with crystallite sizes ranging from 386.70 to 653.10 nm. FTIR spectra revealed that CB was present on the surface of the resulting WCFs/PE/Cu. SEM revealed the dispersion of a uniformly flower-like morphology over a large area. Sorption studies were performed based on parameters that included pH, dose, contact time, and initial concentration. The adsorption isotherm and the kinetic studies of the DLM adsorption process were applied at a pH of 5.0 and a temperature of 25 °C using several isotherms and kinetic models. The results revealed qmax (20.51 mg/g) with R2 = 0.97, the Langmuir isotherm that best matches the experimental data. Hence, the Langmuir isotherm suggests that it is the model that best describes sorption on homogenous surfaces or surface-supporting sites with various affinities. The correlation coefficient R2, χ2, adjusted correlation coefficient, and error functions like root mean square (RMSE), normalized root mean square error (NRMES), and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate the best-fit models to the experimental adsorption data. Moreover, cost estimation for the prepared adsorbent WCFs/PE/Cu showed that it costs approximately 3 USD/g, which is a cheap adsorbent compared to other similar adsorbents reported in the literature. The examined WCFs/PE have significant applicability potential for Cu2+-laden wastewater treatment due to their superior Cu2+ metal ions adsorption capability and reusability. The cytotoxicity and safety study showed that at higher concentrations, it resulted in much less cell viability. Additionally, the removal efficiency of Cu2+ metal ions from synthetic, realistic industrial wastewater using WCFs/PE reached up to 96.29 %, demonstrating good adsorption capability. Thus, there is a huge possibility of accomplishing this and performing well. This study paves the way for the reuse and valorization of selected adsorbents following circular economy principles. Two green metrics were applied, the Analytical Eco-scale and the Analytical GREEnness Calculator (AGREE).

Progress in layered double hydroxides (LDHs): Synthesis and application in adsorption, catalysis and photoreduction

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), also known as anionic clays, have attracted significant attention in energy and environmental applications due to their exceptional physicochemical properties. These materials possess a unique structure with surface hydroxyl groups, tunable properties, and high stability, making them highly desirable. In this review, the synthesis and functionalization of LDHs have been explored including co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods. Furthermore, extensive research on LDH application in toxic pollutant removal has shown that modifying or functionalizing LDHs using materials such as activated carbon, polymers, and inorganics is crucial for achieving efficient pollutant adsorption, improved cyclic performance, as well as effective catalytic oxidation of organics and photoreduction. This study offers a comprehensive overview of the progress made in the field of LDHs and LDH-based composites for water and wastewater treatment. It critically discusses and explains both direct and indirect synthesis and modification techniques, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, this review critically discusses and explains the potential of LDH-based composites as absorbents. Importantly, it focuses on the capability of LDH and LDH-based composites in heterogeneous catalysis, including the Fenton reaction, Fenton-like reactions, photocatalysis, and photoreduction, for the removal of organic dyes, organic micropollutants, and heavy metals. The mechanisms involved in pollutant removal, such as adsorption, electrostatic interaction, complexation, and degradation, are thoroughly explained. Finally, this study outlines future research directions in the field.

A photothermal MoS2 decorated biomass carbon-based aerogel with a directionally aligned porous structure for mitigating heavy metal stress under seawater acidification

Marine animals and human are threatened by seawater acidification and metal contamination. Especially, the toxicity of copper (Cu) is expected to be boosted with seawater acidification. However, studies on the removal of Cu under seawater acidification are limited for practical applications, owing to obstacles such as instability, secondary contamination, and low adsorption efficiency. In this work, coconut shells were utilized for the synthesis of biomass carbon, which was then decorated with MoS2. A novel porous MoS2/carbon-based aerogel (MCA) with the synergistic effect of photothermal conversion and adsorption was constructed via directional freeze-drying technology. The adsorption properties of MCA were a precise match with Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models with a high correlation coefficient (R2) of more than 0.995. Under solar illumination, the surface temperature of MCA reached up to 36.3 °C and the adsorption capacity of MCA increased to 833.8 mg g-1, indicating that the remarkable thermal properties of MCA contributed to achieving high adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanisms of MCA involved in the removal of Cu(ii) ions were dominated by chemisorption rather than surface physical adsorption. Owing to its outstanding photothermal conversion performance and directionally aligned porous structure, MCA was able to remove Cu(ii) species from seawater, and the adsorption ability of MCA reached 247.1 mg g-1 after ten adsorption cycles. MCA exhibited excellent stability to resist the complex natural environment and was easy to reuse. Overall, MCA with a series of merits, including high adsorption efficiency, excellent photothermal conversion property, and outstanding cycling stability, was confirmed to contribute to addressing heavy metal stress under seawater acidification.

A New Cu/Fe Layer Double Hydroxide Nanocomposite Exerts Anticancer Effects against PC-3 Cells by Inducing Cell Cycle Arrest and Apoptosis

Prostate cancer treatment poses significant challenges due to its varying aggressiveness, potential for metastasis, and the complexity of treatment options. Balancing the effectiveness of therapies, minimizing side effects, and personalizing treatment strategies are ongoing challenges in managing this disease. Significant advances in the use of nanotechnology for the treatment of prostate cancer with high specificity, sensitivity, and efficacy have recently been made. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize a novel Cu/Fe layer double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposite for use as an anticancer agent to treat prostate cancer. Cu/Fe LDH nanocomposites with a molar ratio of 5:1 were developed using a simple co-precipitation approach. FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA, and zeta potential analyses confirmed the nanocomposite. Moreover, the MTT cell viability assay, scratch assay, and flow cytometry were utilized to examine the prospective anticancer potential of Cu/Fe LDH on a prostate cancer (PC-3) cell line. We found that Cu/Fe LDH reduced cell viability, inhibited cell migration, induced G1/S phase cell cycle arrest, and triggered apoptotic effect in prostate cancer cells. The findings also indicated that generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation could improve the biological activity of Cu/Fe LDH. Additionally, Cu/Fe LDH showed a good safety impact on the normal lung fibroblast cell line (WI-38). Collectively, these findings demonstrate that the Cu/Fe LDH nanocomposite exhibited significant anticancer activities against PC-3 cells and, hence, could be used as a promising strategy in prostate cancer treatment.

Waste Valorization of a Recycled ZnCoFe Mixed Metal Oxide/Ceftriaxone Waste Layered Nanoadsorbent for Further Dye Removal

Waste valorization of spent wastewater nanoadsorbents is a promising technique to support the circular economy strategies. The terrible rise of heavy metal pollution in the environment is considered a serious threat to the terrestrial and aquatic environment. This led to the necessity of developing cost-effective, operation-convenient, and recyclable adsorbents. ZnCoFe mixed metal oxide (MMO) was synthesized using co-precipitation. The sample was characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Factors affecting the adsorption process such as pH, the dose of adsorbent, and time were investigated. ZnCoFe MMO showed the maximum adsorption capacity of 118.45 mg/g for ceftriaxone sodium. The spent MMO was recycled as an adsorbent for malachite green (MG) removal. Interestingly, the spent adsorbent showed 94% removal percent for MG as compared to the fresh MMO (90%). The kinetic investigation of the adsorption process was performed and discussed. In addition, ZnCoFe MMO was tested as an antimicrobial agent. The proposed approach opens up a new avenue for recycling wastes after adsorption into value-added materials for utilization in adsorbent production with excellent performance as antimicrobial agents.

Recovery, regeneration and sustainable management of spent adsorbents from wastewater treatment streams: A review

Adsorption is the most widely adopted, effective, and reliable treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic contaminants from wastewater. One of the major issues with the adsorption-treatment process for the removal of contaminants from wastewater streams is the recovery and sustainable management of spent adsorbents. This review focuses on the effectiveness of emerging adsorbents and how the spent adsorbents could be recovered, regenerated, and further managed through reuse or safe disposal. The critical analysis of both conventional and emerging adsorbents on organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater systems are evaluated. The various recovery and regeneration techniques of spent adsorbents including magnetic separation, filtration, thermal desorption and decomposition, chemical desorption, supercritical fluid desorption, advanced oxidation process and microbial assisted adsorbent regeneration are discussed in detail. The current challenges for the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents and the methodologies used for solving those problems are covered. The spent adsorbents are managed through regeneration for reuse (such as soil amendment, capacitor, catalyst/catalyst support) or safe disposal involving incineration and landfilling. Sustainable management of spent adsorbents, including processes involved in the recovery and regeneration of adsorbents for reuse, is examined in the context of resource recovery and circular economy. Finally, the review ends with the current drawbacks in the recovery and management of the spent adsorbents and the future directions for the economic and environmental feasibility of the system for industrial-scale application.

A silanized magnetic amino-functionalized carbon nanotube-based multi-ion imprinted polymer for the selective aqueous decontamination of heavy metal ions

A novel adsorbent comprising a silanized magnetic amino-functionalized carbon nanotube-based multi-ion imprinted polymer is introduced as an ideal candidate for the simultaneous and selective adsorptive remediation of heavy metal ions from contaminated water.

LDH Nanocubes Synthesized with Zeolite Templates and Their High Performance as Adsorbents

In this work, the efficiency of the adsorptive removal of the organic cationic dye methylene blue (MB) from polluted water was examined using three materials: natural clay (zeolite), Zn-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH), and zeolite/LDH composite. These materials were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) diffraction (XRF), low-temperature N2 adsorption, pore volume and average pore size distribution and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The properties of the applied nanomaterials regarding the adsorption of MB were investigated by determining various experimental parameters, such as the contact time, initial dye concentration, and solution pH. In addition, the adsorption isotherm model was estimated using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm models. The Langmuir model was the best-fitting for all applied nanomaterials. In addition, the kinetics were analyzed by using pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models, and the pseudo-second-order model was an apparent fit for all three applied nanomaterials. The maximum Adsorption capacity toward MB obtained from the materials was in the order zeolite/LDH composite > zeolites > Zn-Fe LDH. Thus, the zeolite/LDH composite is an excellent adsorbent for the removal of MB from polluted water.
