Assessment of water quality condition and spatiotemporal patterns in selected wetlands of Punjab, India

Spatio-temporal evolution of groundwater quality and its health risk assessment in Punjab (India) during 2000-2020

The state known as the bread basket of India has now been defamed as the cancer capital of the country. The toxicity of groundwater associated with the declining water level is reported in recent years. However, an extensive temporal and spatial analysis is required to identify hotspots. In this study, spatial tools are utilized to understand the evolution of groundwater in Punjab (> 315 sites) for the last two decades (2000-2020) for drinking purposes using the water quality index (WQI). The data for pH, electric conductivity (EC), bicarbonate (HCO3¯), chloride (Cl¯), sulfate (SO42¯), nitrate (NO3¯), fluoride (F¯), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+) collected from the Central Groundwater Board (CGWB) were analyzed. The results show that the average cation abundance is in declining order of Na > Mg > Ca > K, and anion abundance is in order of HCO3¯ > SO42¯ > Cl¯ > NO3 > F. The ions are compared with water quality standards defined by BIS and WHO. The study shows that in the year 2000, 69.52% of locations are above the acceptable limit for EC, 68.89% for Mg2, 84.76% for Na+, 51.75% for HCO3¯, 38.41% for NO3¯, and 17.20% for F¯. While in the year 2020, 48.89% exceed the acceptable limit for EC, 57.78% for Mg2+, 68.25% for Na+, 34.92% for HCO3¯, 27.30% for NO3¯, and 8.88% for F¯. WQI shows that in the year 2000, 13.01% of sampling locations are categorized as very poor and 20% as unsuitable for drinking. Meanwhile, in 2020, 6.35% of locations are categorized as very poor and 12.38% as unsuitable for drinking in the study area. In addition to the effect on plant growth, consumption of contaminated water can adversely affect human health. The health hazards for F¯ (HQF) and NO3¯ (HQN) and their total health index (THI) are also evaluated that depicts 244 groundwater sampling sites in the year 2000, and 152 sampling sites in the year 2020 show high non-carcinogenic effects on adults, children, and infants. Southwestern Punjab is found to be the worst affected, while north-eastern regions drained by the Himalayan rivers show better quality water. Shifting in agricultural practices in the last two decades and declining water levels due to excess pumping of water from deeper water tables deteriorated the quality of water in the Southern region as observed from the geospatial analysis.

Inundation dynamics of the natural and manmade wetlands in the Mayurakshi River basin, Eastern India

The present study aimed to measure wetland inundation inconsistency level (IIL) at a spatial scale to appraise the potential serviceability in the Mayurakshi river basin of Eastern India. Inconsistency was used for measuring both wetland water presence area and proxy water depth based on historical satellite images from 1988 to 2022. Applying inconsistency assessment, it was tried to assess how water appearance at a pixel is inconsistent and how average proxy water depth is inconsistent to attain. Four manmade and natural floodplain wetland complexes were taken for this. The study revealed about 51-53% and 59-86% manmade and natural wetland losses respectively and the IIL was also found significantly higher (30-50%) in the cases of natural wetlands in pre and post-monsoon seasons. The scenario is worse in pre-monsoon season in the natural wetlands. Inconsistency of water depth anomaly (IWDA) was also significantly increased almost in the same trend. Discharge control through hydro-engineering structures like dams, barrages, and embankments; river and wetland connecting tie channel loss; and loss of groundwater support are some crucial reasons behind the hydrological inconsistency of wetlands. Growing loss and IIL are caused for concerned economic and ecological adversity. So, the findings would be very useful for taking necessary planning for wetland management and restoration.

Riverine connectivity influences the phytoplankton ecology in the open floodplain wetland of the lower river Ganga

The river Ganga has several floodplain wetlands that support its ecology and ecosystem. Phytoplankton is an important component of the aquatic ecosystem, which plays an important role as a bioindicator for the assessment of aquatic health. The present study was conducted between 2018 and 2019 to understand the seasonal variation in the phytoplankton diversity of the Charaganga wetland and, parallelly, in the river Ganga in Nabadweep, India. The study explains how riverine connectivity affects the structure of the algal community in the wetland ecosystem. In the study, it has been observed that in the wetland, maximum mean phytoplankton density was noticed during pre-monsoon, i.e., 4079 unit l-1 followed by post-monsoon 3812 unit l-1 and monsoon 550 unit l-1, respectively. In the river system, the phytoplankton density varied from 78 unit l-1 to 653 unit l-1 seasonally, i.e., highest during monsoon and lowest during pre-monsoon. In both the ecosystems, i.e., wetland and river, the supreme influential group was Cyanophyceae followed by diatoms. One-way ANOVA showed a significant variation (p > 0.05) of three algal groups of phytoplankton (Bacillariophyceae, Coscinodiscophyceae, Chlorophyceae) in the river, while in the wetland, no significant variation (p > 0.05) was found among the other algal groups. The observed higher Shannon and Margalef's species richness value in the wetland was observed than in the river defines the significance and importance of the wetland ecosystem, which may support the growth and conservation of various aquatic organisms as well. The study highlighted that the influencing abiotic factors like water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and nutrients have affected the phytoplankton community in both the water bodies, i.e., wetland and river. We concluded that river connectivity is required to restore the biotic flora of the wetland ecosystem.

Challenges in the conservation of endangered Rucervus eldii eldii McClelland in Keibul Lamjao National Park and Pumlen pat: an analysis of sediment and water quality of the floating natural habitats in the Indo Burma hotspot

As a part of the monitoring practice of the lone natural habitat of the endemic and endangered Rucervus eldii eldii McClelland or Sangai, the paper reports sediment and water characteristics of Keibul Lamjao National Park-the only floating national park of the world in Manipur, Indo Burma hotspot. The water analysis showed low pH (5.69 ± 0.16), high electrical conductivity (342 ± 13.01 μS m^-1), high turbidity (33.2 ± 9.407 NTU), and high phosphate concentrations (0.92 ± 0.11 mg L^-1) during the study period. The water quality index values calculated indicate that the park water during post-monsoon season is unfit for drinking. Thus, the degrading water quality poses a serious risk to the health of the deer and other species in the park. At present, Sangai in its natural habitat is threatened by pollution, encroachment, phoomdi thickness reduction, and inbreeding depression. To address the problem of inbreeding, Pumlen pat is considered as a second suitable natural habitat for the deer reintroduction program. During the study, water characteristics of the wetland showed similar characteristics as KLNP, i.e., low pH (5.86 ± 0.30), high electrical conductivity (377.6 ± 5.55 μS m^-1), high turbidity (32.36 ± 4.91 NTU), and high phosphate concentrations (0.79 ± 0.14 mg L^-1). Likewise, sediments showed high TP accumulation that ranged from 197.03 ± 0.75 to 332.88 ± 0.99 mg kg^-1 for KLNP and 245.18 ± 0.85 to 351.48 ± 0.71 mg kg^-1 for Pumlen pat, respectively. Both, the lone natural habitat and the proposed habitat showed deteriorating water quality. As such, continuous monitoring of KLNP and Pumlen pat water and sediment quality should be a priority during the management practices to protect the endangered deer and health of the habitats for long-term conservation.

Temporal and spatial variability of water quality in an urban wetland and the effects of season and rainfall: a case study in the Daguan Wetland, China

Urban wetlands provide multiple functions including water treatment, recreation, and education, but they are also highly vulnerable, so it is important to monitor wetland water quality to ensure wetland health. In this study, water quality parameters of an urban wetland and rainfall were monitored at 6 sites for 1 year. The correlation analysis of water quality parameters and spatial-temporal variability analysis of water quality were carried out. Besides, the effects of season and rainfall on the wetland water quality were evaluated by the comprehensive water quality identification index (CWQII). These results have shown that there is a significant correlation between nutrient pollutants and Chl-a. Wetland water quality changed with the seasons, but it also varied due to changes in rainfall and location. The water quality of the shallow areas both had high susceptibility and response to seasonal changes and rainfall, but the water quality of the deepwater area was relatively stable. The CWQIIs in different seasons were ranked: Winter (5.98) > spring (4.67) > autumn (4.66) > summer (4.26), and the CWQIIs of different rainfall intensities were ranked: torrential rain (5.09) > heavy rain (4.88) > light rain (4.50) > no rain (4.39) > moderate rain (3.95). The results of this study distinctly explained the effects of season and rainfall on water quality in an urban wetland in a subtropical monsoon climate zone and would be helpful to the policymakers and concerned authorities in developing better water quality management strategies for these wetlands.

Algae and Cyanobacteria Diversity and Bioindication of Long-Term Changes in the Hula Nature Reserve, Israel

Lake Hula, the core of one of the most extensive wetland complexes in the Eastern Mediterranean, was drained in 1951–1958. However, about 350 hectares of papyrus marshes were allocated in the southwestern part of the previous lake and became the Hula Nature Reserve status, the first of two wetlands in Israel included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. The list of algae and cyanobacteria species of Lake Hula was compiled by us for the first time based on data from publications of 1938–1958, as well as our research in the Hula Nature Reserve, obtained within the framework of the monitoring program for 2007–2013. The list includes 225 species and intraspecies of algae and cyanobacteria belonging to eight phyla. The dynamics of the species richness of algae and cyanobacteria flora for 1938–2013 are shown. Species-bioindicators of water quality have been identified, and the change in their composition by ecological groups for a period of about a hundred years has been shown. Based on the species richness of algae communities, water quality indices were calculated with particular attention to changes in trophic status during the study period. The algae flora of Lake Hula and Hula Nature Reserve was found to be similar, but bioindication has revealed an increase in salinity and organic pollution in recent years.
