Taste Changes after Bariatric Surgery: a Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Alterations in taste perception and preferences may contribute to dietary changes and subsequent weight loss following bariatric surgery.

METHODS

A systematic search was performed to identify all articles investigating gustation, olfaction, and sensory perception in both animal and human studies following bariatric procedures.

RESULTS

Two hundred fifty-five articles were identified after database searches, bibliography inclusions and deduplication. Sixty-one articles were included. These articles provide evidence supporting changes in taste perception and hedonic taste following bariatric procedures. Taste sensitivity to sweet and fatty stimuli appears to increase post-operatively. Additionally, patients also have a reduced hedonic response to these stimuli.

CONCLUSIONS

Available evidence suggests that there is a change in taste perception following bariatric procedures, which may contribute to long-term maintenance of weight loss following surgery.

Berberis integerrima ameliorates insulin resistance in high- fructose-fed insulin-resistant rats

OBJECTIVES

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of Berberis integerrima (B. integerrima) extract on insulin sensitivity in high-fructose-fed insulin-resistant rats.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Experimental rats were randomly divided into two groups: the control group was fed a regular chow diet while other group fed with a high-fructose diet for 8 weeks. After the first six weeks, the animals were treated with B. integerrima extract or pioglitazone for two weeks. Insulin and adiponectin levels were measured by ELISA. Additionally, Insulin resistance was calculated using a Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The plasma free fatty acid (FFA) profile was obtained by gas chromatography. PPARγ and GLUT4 gene expression were assessed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western-blotting.

RESULTS

Comparing the B. integerrima treated group with the control group, weight gain (P=0.009) and levels of insulin (P=0.001), blood glucose (P<0.0001), and HOMA-IR (P<0.0001) were significantly reduced. Additionally, the adiponectin concentration was significantly increased (P<0.0001). Among the FFA fractions, the mean concentration of palmitoleic acid and stearic acid in the B. integerrima group were significantly higher than the control group (P<0.0001 and P=0.005, respectively). However, there was no significant difference at the mRNA and protein level of GLUT4 and PPAR-γ between B. integerrima treated group and control group.

CONCLUSION

The study findings revealed that B. integerrima might be a protective candidate against Type 2 diabetes/insulin resistance through direct insulin-like effect and an increase in adiponectin levels. However, the mechanism of B. integerrima was independent of GLUT4 and PPARγ.

Análise do impacto da cirurgia bariátrica em uma população do centro do estado do Rio Grande do Sul utilizando o método BAROS

CONTEXTO: Devido às alterações metabólicas causadas pelo excesso de peso, a cirurgia bariátrica tem sido muito utilizada, a fim de proporcionar perda e manutenção de peso a longo prazo na população com obesidade mórbida. OBJETIVO: Analisar o impacto da cirurgia bariátrica em uma população do centro do estado do Rio Grande do Sul utilizando o método BAROS. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado estudo retrospectivo, com 32 pacientes, de ambos os sexos, entre 19 e 44 anos de uma clínica particular de Santa Maria, RS. Analisaram-se as variações de peso e índice de massa corpórea, hábito intestinal, uso de tabaco e prática de atividade física para comparar resultados nos períodos de pré e pós-operatório. Os pacientes foram divididos em: grupo A (pré-operatório), grupo B (até 6 meses de pós-operatório), grupo C (7 a 18 meses de pós-operatório) e grupo D (19 a 30 meses de pós-operatório). Para avaliação da eficácia da cirurgia bariátrica foi utilizado o método BAROS. Para análise estatística foi utilizado o teste ANOVA uma via e post-hoc seguido de Duncan's. Foram considerados estatisticamente significantes os dados com P<0,05. Os resultados foram expressos em média ± EP. RESULTADOS: Os pacientes apresentaram redução significativa no peso, no pré-operatório. A média foi de 118,8 kg (± 2,89), e no pós-operatório, o grupo B apresentou 89 kg (± 5,69), o grupo C 76,8 kg (± 4,85) e o grupo D 76 kg (± 4,46), demonstrando perda de peso gradativa. Do mesmo modo, o índice de massa corpórea apresentou redução significativa nos grupo B, C e D, em relação ao grupo A. Os pacientes apresentaram melhora do hábito intestinal de 15,6% no pós-operatório em relação ao pré-operatório. Quanto ao uso de tabaco, houve redução de 33,3% no pós-operatório. A prática de atividade física aumentou em 34,4% entre os pacientes após a cirurgia. De acordo com a aplicação do método BAROS, os pacientes apresentaram classificações excelente, muito bom e bom, não apresentando classificação insuficiente. CONCLUSÃO: De acordo com os resultados do método BAROS e das características avaliadas dos pacientes, pode-se observar que a cirurgia bariátrica apresentou efeitos satisfatórios nessa população.
