Redox potential model for guiding moderate oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils

In-situ chemical oxidation is an important approach to remediate soils contaminated with persistent organic pollutants, e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, massive oxidants are added into soils without an explicit model for predicting the redox potential (Eh) during soil remediation, and overdosed oxidants would pose secondary damage by disturbing soil organic matter and acidity. Here, a soil redox potential (Eh) model was first established to quantify the relationship among oxidation parameters, crucial soil properties, and pollutant elimination. The impacts of oxidant types and doses, soil pH, and soil organic carbon contents on soil Eh were systematically clarified in four commonly used oxidation systems (i.e., KMnO4, H2O2, fenton, and persulfate). The relative error of preliminary Eh model was increased from 48-62% to 4-16% after being modified with the soil texture and dissolved organic carbon, and this high accuracy was verified by 12 actual PAHs contaminated soils. Combining the discovered critical oxidation potential (COP) of PAHs, the moderate oxidation process could be regulated by the guidance of the soil Eh model in different soil conditions. Moreover, the product analysis revealed that the hydroxylation of PAHs occurred most frequently when the soil Eh reached their COP, providing a foundation for further microorganism remediation. These results provide a feasible strategy for selecting oxidants and controlling their doses toward moderate oxidation of contaminated soils, which will reduce the consumption of soil organic matter and protect the main structure and function of soil for future utilization. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: This study provides a novel insight into the moderate chemical oxidation by the Eh model and largely reduces the secondary risks of excessive oxidation and oxidant residual in ISCO. The moderate oxidation of PAHs could be a first step to decrease their toxicity and increase their bioaccessibility, favoring the microbial degradation of PAHs. Controlling the soil Eh with the established model here could be a promising approach to couple moderate oxidation of organic contaminants with microbial degradation. Such an effective and green soil remediation will largely preserve the soil's functional structure and favor the subsequent utilization of remediated soil.

Research progress and prospect of glomalin-related soil protein in the remediation of slightly contaminated soil

Soil pollution caused by organic pollutants and potentially toxic elements poses a serious threat to sustainable agricultural development, global food security and human health. Therefore, strategies for reducing soil pollution are urgently required. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF)-assisted phytoremediation is widely recognized for its ability to remediate slightly-contaminated soil. Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) production by AMF is considered a vital mechanism of AMF-assisted phytoremediation. GRSP is widespread in soils and may contribute to the remediation of slightly contaminated soils. GRSP facilitates stabilization of pollutants in soils by interacting with pollutants owing to its abundant functional groups, recalcitrance, and long turnover time. It also enhances soil bioremediation and phytoremediation by stimulating soil microbial activity, improving soil structure, and providing nutrients for plants. However, research on GRSP is still in its early stages, and studies on contaminated soil remediation are limited. The effectiveness of GRSP in situ remediation remains to be proved. This review summarizes current knowledge regarding the GRSP distribution and its contribution to the remediation of slightly contaminated soils. Additionally, we present strategies to increase the GRSP content in contaminated soils, as well as prospects for future studies on the use of GRSP in contaminated soil remediation. This study focuses on recent developments that aim to improve awareness of the role of GRSP in soil remediation and relevant future directions.

Multicomponent Synthesis Strategies, Catalytic Activities, and Potential Therapeutic Applications of Pyranocoumarins: A Comprehensive Review

Fused coumarins, because of their remarkable biological and therapeutic properties, particularly pyranocoumarins, have caught the interest of synthetic organic chemists, leading to the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly protocols for synthesizing pyranocoumarin derivatives. These compounds are the most promising heterocycles discovered in both natural and synthetic sources, with anti-inflammatory, anti-HIV, antitubercular, antihyperglycemic, and antibacterial properties. This review employed the leading scientific databases Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed up to the end of 2022, as well as the combining terms pyranocoumarins, synthesis, isolation, structural elucidation, and biological activity. Among the catalysts employed, acidic magnetic nanocatalysts, transition metal catalysts, and carbon-based catalysts have all demonstrated improved reaction yields and facilitated reactions under milder conditions. Herein, the present review discusses the various multicomponent synthetic strategies for pyranocoumarins catalyzed by transition metal-based catalysts, transition metal-based nanocatalysts, transition metal-free catalysts, carbon-based nanocatalysts, and their potential pharmacological activities.

Kill two birds with one stone: Ceramisite production using organic contaminated soil

Disposal of organic-contaminated soil through ceramsite production can not only generate ceramsite with acceptable properties but also completely remediate the organic-contaminated soil owing to high treatment temperature. However, the removal mechanism of organic pollutants and the gas-solid phase distribution of the pollutants remain unclear. In this study, coking contaminated soils with high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) were used to prepare ceramsite at 1160 °C. The quality of ceramsite met the required product standard when the disposal ratio of contaminated soil was up to 60%. The concentration of PAHs and PHC in the soil was 57.7 mg kg^-1 and 255 mg kg^-1. After the experiment, almost no PAHs and PHC were found in the ceramsite. High-ring PAHs were dominant in the flue gas when using model soil spiked with PAHs. Computed tomography scanning indicated that cracks developed in the ceramsite when the temperature was higher than 200 °C. High-temperature in-situ thermal analysis showed that when the temperature was increased to 400 °C, the pollutant from the interior of ceramsite would flow into the flue gas with the released volatile matter. Thermal desorption and degradation of PAHs were the main mechanisms of pollutant removal.

Low temperature thermal desorption-chemical oxidation hybrid process for the remediation of organic contaminated model soil: A case study

The efficiencies of thermal desorption and oxidation process in engineering soil remediation are to some extent limited due to the huge loss of heat to the soil or underground water or mass transfer resistance in the soil. To enhance the oxidation and improve the energy utilization. Herein, the thermal desorption process and the oxidation process (by ozone) are combined together to remediate the organic contaminated model soil (take the 2,4-dimethylaniline (2,4-DMA) as pollutant). Results show that this hybrid process could not only reduce the thermal desorption temperature (as low as 50-90 °C), but also improve the oxidation efficiency significantly, even achieving 100% degradation of 2,4-DMA in less than 10 min in the soil. It is found that the remediation efficiency by the hybrid process is also highly dependent on different operational parameters, including the heating temperature, ozone concentration, especially the moisture content in the soil. The results suggest that a proper content of water in the soil is beneficial for the degradation of pollutants by the hybrid process. Finally, the degradation kinetics and mechanisms of 2,4-DMA in the soil by the hybrid process has been primarily discussed. These findings suggest that the low temperature enhanced chemical oxidation process would be a promising method for future remediation of organic contaminated soil due to its relatively low energy consuming and high removal efficiency in shorter time.

Effect of nanomaterials on remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons-contaminated soils: A review

The remediation of toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil is always an important topic since exposure to contaminated soil with carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic potential can result in serious health effects. With respect to the remediation of PAHs contaminated soil, nanomaterials (NMs) have recently received a great deal of attention due to the special characteristics arising from their nanoscale sizes. However, the usefulness and potency of these NMs depend on their adaption to specific site conditions and soil properties. Since there is no comprehensive review of the applications of NMs, it is of great importance to analyze, discuss, and interpret the latest progress in the application of NMs for the remediation of contaminated soils containing PAHs. This overview essentially captures the novel advances made in nano zero valent-iron (nZVI), metal oxides, carbon-based NMs, and polymer-based materials. Each characteristic of NMs that contributes to the enhancement of the process is highlighted. Moreover, operational conditions in which the best-obtained results are achieved qualitatively summarize. This review is also given special attention to the type of soil and pollutant, which are major influential factors to affect the performance of the process. Furthermore, the potential implication of NMs and PAHs on soil properties is reviewed in terms of the changes in migration behavior of pollutants, plant phytotoxicity, and soil microbial community composition. Discussion on future perspectives is presented on the use and prospects for the application of NMs in contaminated soils.

Heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for treatment of rhamnolipid-solubilized hexadecane wastewater

The treatment of wastewater containing hydrophobic organic pollutants solubilized by surfactants is of great environmental importance. In this work, the removal of rhamnolipid-solubilized hexadecane via a salicylic acid-methanol-acetone modified steel converter slag (SMA-SCS) catalyzed Fenton-like process was studied. First, we investigated the adsorption of rhamnolipid and hexadecane onto SCS and SMA-modified SCS. Compared to that of SCS, SMA-SCS exhibited better adsorption performance with maximum adsorption capacities of 0.23 and 0.28 mg/g for hexadecane and rhamnolipid, respectively. Degradation experiments showed that hexadecane was more readily degraded by the Fenton-like process than rhamnolipid. Up to 81.1% of hexadecane removal was achieved over 20 g/L of SMA-SCS within 24 h, whereas only 36% of rhamnolipid was degraded. On the other hand, the results indicated that increased rhamnolipid concentration had a negative effect on the degradation of hexadecane. During the oxidation reaction, the pH value of solution remained between 6.0 and 6.72. All these results demonstrated that the SMA-SCS/H₂O₂ Fenton-like process could be a cost-effective and promising approach for the treatment of surfactant-solubilized hydrophobic organic compounds.

Mechanisms for rhamnolipids-mediated biodegradation of hydrophobic organic compounds

The widespread existence of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in soil and water poses a potential health hazard to human, such as skin diseases, heart diseases, carcinogenesis, etc. Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation has been regarded as one of the most viable technologies to treat HOCs contaminated soil and groundwater. As a biosurfactant that has been intensively studied, rhamnolipids have shown to enhance biodegradation of HOCs in the environment, however, the underlying mechanisms are not fully disclosed. In this paper, properties and production of rhamnolipids are summarized. Then effects of rhamnolipids on the biodegradation of HOCs, including solubilization, altering cell affinity to HOCs, and facilitating microbial uptake are reviewed in detail. Special attention is paid to how rhamnolipids change the bioavailability of HOCs, which are crucial for understanding the mechanism of rhamnolipids-mediated biodegradation. The biodegradation and toxicity of rhamnolipids are also discussed. Finally, perspectives and future research directions are proposed. This review adds insight to rhamnolipids-enhanced biodegradation process, and helps in application of rhamnolipids in bioremediation.

Effect of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide on uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by carrots

This is the first study investigating the effect of cationic surfactants on the mobility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aged contaminated soils and on PAH bioaccumulation in tuberous vegetables. In an aerobic soil incubation experiment, 150 mg/kg cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTMAB) decreased the bioavailability of PAHs primarily via immobilization (by 13%). In a carrot pot experiment, the effectiveness of CTMAB to reduce PAH uptake by carrots decreased with time. Accordingly, the bioavailability of PAHs in the soil decreased in the first 90 days and then increased and remained stable until harvest. In the leaching test, the leaching loss of CTMAB (15%) was lower in soils treated with small amounts of CTMAB in several applications than it was in soils (24%) treated once with CTMAB. Therefore, CTMAB, when applied in appropriate doses via addition methods, can effectively reduce the environmental risk of PAH entering humans and livestock through the food chain.

Effects of cationic surfactant on the bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rice and the soil microbial community structure

Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide reduced the PAH bioaccumulation in rice from paddy soils and benefit the soil ecology in the short term.

Enhanced photodegradation of pentachlorophenol by single and mixed nonionic and anionic surfactants using graphene-TiO₂ as catalyst

The photodegradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in a surfactant-containing (single and mixed) complex system using graphene-TiO2 (GT) as catalyst was investigated. The objective was to better understand the behavior of surfactants in a GT catalysis system for its possible use in remediation technology of soil contaminated by hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs). In a single-surfactant system, surfactant molecules aggregated on GT via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic force; nonideal mixing between nonionic and anionic surfactants rendered GT surface with mixed admicelles in a mixed surfactant system. Both effects helped incorporating PCP molecules into surfactant aggregates on catalyst surface. Hence, the targeted pollutants were rendered easily available to photo-yielded oxidative radicals, and photodegradation efficiency was significantly enhanced. Finally, real soil washing-photocatalysis trials proved that anionic-nonionic mixed surfactant soil washing coupled with graphene-TiO2 photocatalysis can be one promising technology for HOC-polluted soil remediation.

Utilizing surfactants to control the sorption, desorption, and biodegradation of phenanthrene in soil-water system

An integrative technology including the surfactant enhanced sorption and subsequent desorption and biodegradation of phenanthrene in the soil-water system was introduced and tested. For slightly contaminated agricultural soils, cationic-nonionic mixed surfactant-enhanced sorption of organic contaminants onto soils could reduce their transfer to plants, therefore safe-guarding agricultural production. After planting, residual surfactants combined with added nonionic surfactant could also promote the desorption and biodegradation of residual phenanthrene, thus providing a cost-effective pollution remediation technology. Our results showed that the cationic-nonionic mixed surfactants dodecylpyridinium bromide (DDPB) and Triton X-100 (TX100) significantly enhanced soil retention of phenanthrene. The maximum sorption coefficient Kd of phenanthrene for contaminated soils treated by mixed surfactants was about 24.5 times that of soils without surfactant (Kd) and higher than the combined effects of DDPB and TX100 individually, which was about 16.7 and 1.5 times Kd, respectively. On the other hand, TX100 could effectively remove phenanthrene from contaminated soils treated by mixed surfactants, improving the bioavailability of organic pollutants. The desorption rates of phenanthrene from these treated soils were greater than 85% with TX100 concentration above 2000 mg/L and approached 100% with increasing TX100 concentration. The biodegradation rates of phenanthrene in the presence of surfactants reached over 95% in 30 days. The mixed surfactants promoted the biodegradation of phenanthrene to some extent in 10-22 days, and had no obvious impact on phenanthrene biodegradation at the end of the experiment. Results obtained from this study provide some insight for the production of safe agricultural products and a remediation scheme for soils slightly contaminated with organic pollutants.

Synthesis of alkylated potato starch derivatives and their potential in the aqueous solubilization of benzo[a]pyrene

For the development of renewable bioproducts able to solubilize organic persistent pollutant such as benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), modified potato starch was synthesized by alkylation. The addition of alkyl chains was performed with three different alkylation agents: epoxyalkane, alkenyl succinic anhydride and 1,4-butane sultone. Twelve alkylated starches were obtained with different molar substitutions (MS) and various alkyl chain lengths (to three carbons up to sixteen). The chemical structural characteristics were investigated by methods of (1)H NMR and FTIR. In comparison with the native starch, the ether modified starches showed in general an enhancement of their aqueous solubility whereas the ester modified starches stimulated the BaP aqueous solubilization. Indeed, the compounds P6 and P12, which increased 40-fold the BaP aqueous concentration, present high surfactant properties.
