AnSBBR Applied to Organic Matter and Sulfate Removal: Interaction Effect Between Feed Strategy and Cod/Sulfate Ratio

Insights into the role of biochar on the acidogenic process and microbial pathways in a granular sulfate-reducing up-flow sludge bed reactor

In this study, the effect of biochar on sulfate reduction and anaerobic acidogenic process was explored in a granular sulfate-reducing up-flow sludge bed reactor in both long-term operation and batch tests. Both bioreactors had a high sulfate reduction efficiency of over 95% during the long-term operation, while the reactor with biochar addition showed higher sulfate reduction efficiency and stronger robustness against volatile fatty acids accumulation with a higher organic loading and sulfate loading rate. Batch tests showed that adding biochar significantly lessened the lag phase of the sulfate-reducing process, accelerated the adaption of acidogens, and facilitated both production and utilization of volatile fatty acids. The microbial pathways proved that biochar could regulate the acidification fermentation pathway and facilitate the enrichment of assimilative desulfurization bacteria. Overall, this study revealed that the acidogenic sulfate-reducing metabolic pathway could be enhanced by biochar, offering a potential application for effective sulfate-laden wastewater treatment.

Over-sulfated soils and sediments treatment: A brief discussion on performance disparities of biological and non-biological methods throughout the literature

High sulfate concentrations in industrial effluents as well as solid materials (excavated soils, dredged sediments, etc.) are a major hindrance for circular economy outlooks. SO₄^2- acceptability standards are indeed increasingly restrictive, given the potential outcomes for public health and ecosystems. This literature review deals with the treatment pathways relying on precipitation, adsorption and microbial redox principles. Although satisfactory removal performances can be achieved with each of them, significant yield differences are displayed throughout the bibliography. The challenge here was to identify the parameters leading to this variability and to assess their impact. The precipitation pathway is based on the formation of two main minerals (ettringite and barite). It can lead to total sulfate removal but can also be limited by aqueous wastes chemistry. Stabilizer kinetics of formation and equilibrium are highly constrained by background properties such as pH, Eh, SO₄^2- saturation state and inhibiting metal occurrences. Regarding the adsorption route, sorbents' intrinsic features such as the q_max parameter govern removal yields. Concerning the microbial pathway, the chemical oxygen demand/SO₄^2- ratio and the hydraulic retention time, which are classically evoked as yield variation factors, appear here to be weakly influential. The effect of these parameters seems to be overridden by the influence of electron donors, which constitute a first order factor of variability. A second order variability can be read according to the nature of these electron donors. Approaches using simple monomers (ethanol lactates, etc.) perform better than those using predominantly ligneous organic matter.

Continuous sulfidogenic wastewater treatment with iron sulfide sludge oxidation and recycle

This study evaluated the technical feasibility of packed-bed sulfidogenic bioreactors dosed with ferrous chloride for continuous wastewater treatment over a 450-day period. In phase I, the bioreactors were operated under different combinations of carbon, iron, and sulfate mass loads without sludge recycling to identify optimal treatment conditions. A COD/sulfate mass ratio of 2 and a Fe/S molar ratio of 1 yielded the best treatment performance with COD oxidation rate of 786 ± 82 mg/(L⋅d), which resulted in 84 ± 9% COD removal, 94 ± 6% sulfate reduction, and good iron retention (99 ± 1%) under favorable pH conditions (6.2-7.0). In phase II, the bioreactors were operated under this chemical load combination over a 62-day period, during which 7 events of sludge collection, oxidation, and recycling were performed. The collected sludge materials contained both inorganic and organic matter with FeS and FeS₂ as the main inorganic constituents. In each event, the sludge materials were oxidized in an oxidizing basin before recycling to mix with the wastewater influent. Sludge recycling yielded enhanced COD removal (90 ± 6% vs. 75 ± 7%), and better effluent quality in terms of pH (6.8 ± 0.1 vs. 6.5 ± 0.2), iron (0.7 ± 0.5 vs. 1.9 ± 1.7 mg/L), and sulfide-S (0.3 ± 0.1 vs. 0.4 ± 0.1 mg/L) removal compared to the baseline operation without sludge recycling during phase II. This process exhibited treatment stability with reasonable variations, and fairly consistent sludge content over long periods of operation under a range of COD/sulfate and Fe/S ratios without sludge recycling. The bioreactors were found to absorb recycling-induced changes efficiently without causing elevated suspended solids in the effluents.

Effect of organic loading rate and fill time on the biohydrogen production in a mechanically stirred AnSBBR treating synthetic sucrose-based wastewater

This study investigated the feasibility to produce biohydrogen of a mechanically stirred anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (AnSBBR) treating sucrose-based synthetic wastewater. The bioreactor performance (30 °C) was evaluated as to the combined effect of fill time (2, 1.5, and 1 h), cycle length (4, 3, and 2 h), influent concentration (3,500 and 5,250 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD) L(-1)) and applied volumetric organic load (AVOLCT from 9.0 to 27.0 g COD L(-1) d(-1)). AVOLs were varied according to influent concentration and cycle length (t C). The results showed that increasing AVOLCT resulted in a decrease in sucrose removal from 99 to 86 % and in improvement of molar yield per removed load (MYRLS.n) from 1.02 mol H2 mol carbohydrate(-1) at AVOLCT of 9.0 g COD L(-1) d(-1) to maximum value of 1.48 mol H2 mol carbohydrate(-1), at AVOLCT of 18.0 g COD L(-1) d(-1), with subsequent decrease. Increasing AVOLCT improved the daily molar productivity of hydrogen (MPr) from 15.28 to 49.22 mol H2 m(-3) d(-1). The highest daily specific molar productivity of hydrogen (SMPr) obtained was 8.71 mol H2 kg TVS(-1) d(-1) at an AVOLCT of 18.0 g COD L(-1) d(-1). Decreasing t C from 4 to 3 h decreased sucrose removal, increased MPr, and improved SMPr. Increasing influent concentration decreased sucrose removal only at t C of 2 h, improved MYRLS,n and MPr at all t C, and also improved SMPr at t C of 4 and 3 h. Feeding strategy had a significant effect on biohydrogen production; increasing fill time improved sucrose removal, MPr, SMPr, and MYRLS,n for all investigated AVOLCT. At all operational conditions, the main intermediate metabolic was acetic acid followed by ethanol, butyric, and propionic acids. Increasing fill time resulted in a decrease in ethanol concentration.

Toxic effects of cadmium (Cd²⁺) on anaerobic biomass: kinetic and metabolic implications

Cadmium ion (Cd(2+)) toxicity on anaerobic systems, used for organic matter removal, was assessed by studying its effect on kinetic parameters and metabolic changes. This fundamental study was performed in a continuous fixed bed anaerobic bioreactor that treated synthetic wastewater simulating domestic sewage. The biomass was immobilized on a fixed bed made of polyurethane foam. Under influent cadmium concentrations of 0.0, 0.4, 4.4 and 6.2 mg Cd(2+) L(-1) the organic matter removal efficiencies were 84%, 82%, 72% and 52%, respectively. At influent concentration of 6.2 mg Cd(2+) L(-1) the reactor had reached its limit for cadmium toxicity. In the removal of dissolved organic matter, the first-order apparent kinetic coefficients (k(1)(app)) were 0.84, 0.67 and 0.10 h(-1) for the operations with 0.0, 0.4 and 4.4 mg Cd(2+) L(-1), respectively. The apparent inhibition coefficient for cadmium (k(i)(app)) was 1.69 mg L(-1). Despite the toxic effects of cadmium on anaerobic organic matter removal at large Cd(2+) concentrations, the results demonstrated that the anaerobic process was suitable for cadmium concentrations below 29.8 mg Cd(2+) L(-1), considering the bioavailable fraction of adsorbed cadmium in the support when the cadmium influent concentration was 6.2 mg Cd(2+) L(-1).

Influence of feed time and sulfate load on the organic and sulfate removal in an ASBR

The removal of sulfate and organic matter was assessed in an ASBR, which treated wastewater containing 500 mg CODL(-1) (3 g CODL(-1)d(-1)) in 8h-cycles at 30 degrees C. The wastewater was enriched with sulfate at [COD/SO(4)(2-)] ratios of 1.34, 0.67 and 0.34 (8.8,4.5 and 2.2 gSO(4)(2-)L(-1)d(-1)). For each COD/[SO(4)(2-)] ratio fill times used were: 10 min (batch), 3 and 6h (fed-batch), achieving sulfate reduction of 30%, 72% and 72% (COD/[SO(4)(2-)] of 1.34); 25%, 58% and 55% (COD/[SO(4)(2-)] of 0.67) and 23%, 37% and 27% (COD/[SO(4)(2-)] of 0.34), respectively, and organic matter removal of 87%, 68% and 80% (COD/[SO(4)(2-)] of 1.34); 78%, 75% and 69% (COD/[SO(4)(2-)] of 0.67) and 85%, 84% and 83% (COD/[SO(4)(2-)] of 0.34), respectively. The results showed that fed-batch operation improved sulfate reduction, whereas organic matter removals were similar for batch and fed-batch operation. In addition, increase in sulfate loading in the fed-batch operation improved organic matter removal.

Effect of feeding strategy and COD/sulfate ratio on the removal of sulfate in an AnSBBR with recirculation of the liquid phase

The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of the interaction between feeding strategy and COD/sulfate ratio on the removal efficiency of sulfate and organic matter from a synthetic wastewater. An anaerobic sequencing batch reactor with recirculation of the liquid phase and containing immobilized biomass on polyurethane foam (AnSBBR) was used. The AnSBBR with a total volume of 3.7 L, treated 2.0 L synthetic wastewater in 8-h cycles at 30+/-1 degrees C and was inoculated with anaerobic biomass from a UASB. Two feeding strategies were assessed: (a) batch and (b) batch followed by fed-batch. In strategy (a) the reactor was fed in 10 min with 2L wastewater containing sulfate and carbon sources. In strategy (b) 1.2 L wastewater (containing only the sulfate source) was fed during the first 10 min of the cycle and the remaining 0.8L (containing only the carbon source) in 240 min. The COD/sulfate ratios assessed were 1 and 3. Based on these values and on the concentrations of organic matter (0.5-11.25 gCOD/L) and sulfate (0.5 and 2.5 gSO(4)(2-)/L), the sulfate and organic matter loading rates applied equaled 1.5 and 4.5 gSO(4)(2-)/Ld for sulfate and 1.5, 4.5 and 13.5 gCOD/Ld for organic matter. After stabilization of the system time profiles were run of monitored parameters (COD, sulfate, sulfide and sulfite). In general, the reactor showed to be robust for use in the anaerobic treatment of wastewaters containing sulfate. Gradual feeding (strategy b) of the carbon source favored sulfate reduction, resulting in sulfate removal efficiencies of 84-98% and organic matter removal efficiencies of 48-95%. The best results were observed under COD/sulfate ratio equal to 1 (loading rates of 1.5 and 4.5 gSO(4)(2-)/Ld for sulfate, and 1.5 and 4.5 gCOD/Ld for organic matter). When COD/sulfate ratio was 3 (loading rates of 1.5 and 4.5 gSO(4)(2-)/Ld for sulfate, and 4.5 and 13.5 gCOD/Ld for organic matter) the effect of feed mode became less significant. These results show that the strategy batch followed by fed-batch is more advantageous for COD/sulfate ratios near the stoichiometric value (0.67) and higher organic matter and sulfate concentrations.

ASBR applied to the treatment of biodiesel production effluent: effect of organic load and fill time on performance and methane production

The effect of organic matter and fill time on anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (5 L, 30 °C, 8-h cycles, 50 rpm) efficiency has been analyzed. Organic matter was increased by the influent concentration. Fill times investigated were in the batch mode and fed-batch followed by batch. In the batch mode organic matter removal were 93%, 81%, and 66% for influent concentration of 500, 1,000, and 2,000 mgCOD/L (0.6, 1.29, and 2.44 g COD/L.d), respectively. At 3,000 mgCOD/L (3.82 gCOD/L x d) operational stability could not be achieved. Removal efficiency was improved by increasing the fill time, and was 85% for the 1,000 mgCOD/L condition and fill times of 2 and 4 h, and 80 and 77% for the 2,000 mgCOD/L condition and fill times of 2 and 4 h, respectively. Hence, gradual feeding seemed to improve and to smooth the profiles of organic matter and volatile acids along the cycle with 78 to 96 NmLCH₄/gCOD.
