Abstract
Research of lactic acid bacteria and its metabolites on biological preservatives becomes a hot topic. Lactobacillus plantarum O2, with good inhibition on Phytophthora capsici (P. capsici), was isolated from the pickle. In this study, the effects of L. plantarum O2 fermentation supernatant (FS) on pepper postharvest preservation and its induced resistance to P. capsici were studied. Results showed that weight loss rate, rot index, respiration rate, relative electrical conductivity, loss of chlorophyll content and VC of pepper in FS treatment group were decreased by 18 %, 64 %, 15 %, 26 %, 33 % and 20 % compared with blank control (BC) after 20 d storage. L* and b*-value of pepper in FS group were lower than those in the BC group. In addition, the damage-induced resistance test found that the infection rate in the FS group was reduced by 39 %, compared with CK2 after 12 d storage. Moreover, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, peroxidase activity, polyphenol oxidase activity, proline content, total phenol content and flavonoid content increased by 14 %, 9 %, 30 %, 8 %, 8 % and 9 %, respectively, while malondialdehyde content decreased by 13 %. These results indicated that FS treatment showed good fresh-keeping effects on postharvest pepper. It could enhance the tolerance of pepper under stress by improving defensive enzyme activities, slowing down the damage caused by P. capsici, and inducing pepper resistance to P. capsici. Therefore, FS can be used as a microbial source bio-preservative for postharvest pepper.

Abstract
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are a significant healthcare burden affecting millions of patients annually. CAUTI are characterized by infection of the bladder and pathogen colonization of the catheter surface, making them especially difficult to treat. Various catheter modifications have been employed to reduce pathogen colonization, including infusion of antibiotics and antimicrobial compounds, altering the surface architecture of the catheter, or coating it with nonpathogenic bacteria. Lactobacilli probiotics offer promise for a "bacterial interference" approach because they not only compete for adhesion to the catheter surface but also produce and secrete antimicrobial compounds effective against uropathogens. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has enabled fabrication of well-defined, cell-laden architectures with tailored release of active agents, thereby offering a novel means for sustained probiotic delivery. Silicone has shown to be a promising biomaterial for catheter applications due to mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and its ability to mitigate encrustation on the catheter. Additionally, silicone, as a bioink, provides an optimum matrix for bioprinting lactobacilli. This study formulates and characterizes novel 3D-bioprinted Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus)-containing silicone scaffolds for future urinary tract catheterization applications. Weight-to-weight (w/w) ratio of silicone/L. rhamnosus was bioprinted and cured with relative catheter dimensions in diameter. Scaffolds were analyzed in vitro for mechanical integrity, recovery of L. rhamnosus, antimicrobial production, and antibacterial effect against uropathogenic Escherichia coli, the leading cause of CAUTI. The results show that L. rhamnosus-containing scaffolds are capable of sustained recovery of live bacteria over 14 days, with sustained production of lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Through the use of 3D bioprinting, this study presents a potential alternative strategy to incorporate probiotics into urinary catheters, with the ultimate goal of preventing and treating CAUTI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) is the most frequently isolated bacteria from teeth with root canal treatment failure. This study aims to evaluate the disinfection effect of ultrasonic-mediated cold plasma-loaded microbubbles (PMBs) on 7d E. faecalis biofilm, the mechanical safety and the mechanisms. METHODS The PMBs were fabricated by a modified emulsification process and the key reactive species, nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were evaluated. The 7d E. faecalis biofilm on human tooth disk was constructed and divided into the following groups: PBS, 2.5%NaOCl, 2%CHX, and different concentrations of PMBs (108 mL-1, 107 mL-1). The disinfection effects and elimination effects were verified with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microhardness and roughness change of dentin after PMBs treatment were verified respectively. RESULTS The concentration of NO and H2O2 in PMBs increased by 39.99% and 50.97% after ultrasound treatment (p < 0.05) respectively. The CLSM and SEM results indicate that PMBs with ultrasound treatment could remove the bacteria and biofilm components effectively, especially those living in dentin tubules. The 2.5% NaOCl presented an excellent effect against biofilm on dishes, but the elimination effect on dentin tubules is limited. The 2% CHX group exhibits significant disinfection effect. The biosafety tests indicated that there is no significant changes on microhardness and roughness after PMBs with ultrasound treatment (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION PMBs combined with ultrasound treatment exhibited significant disinfection effect and biofilm removal effect, the mechanical safety is acceptable.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are ubiquitous microorganisms that can colonize the intestine and participate in the physiological metabolism of the host. LAB can produce a variety of metabolites, including organic acids, bacteriocin, amino acids, exopolysaccharides and vitamins. These metabolites are the basis of LAB function and have a profound impact on host health. The intestine is colonized by a large number of gut microorganisms with high species diversity. Metabolites of LAB can keep the balance and stability of gut microbiota through aiding in the maintenance of the intestinal epithelial barrier, resisting to pathogens and regulating immune responses, which further influence the nutrition, metabolism and behavior of the host. In this review, we summarize the metabolites of LAB and their influence on the intestine. We also discuss the underlying regulatory mechanisms and emphasize the link between LAB and the human gut from the perspective of health promotion.

Abstract
Unlocking the antibacterial potential is an emerging strategy to valorizing the toxic wastewater from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Here, we investigated the response and biological mechanism of antibacterial properties of HTL wastewater. Four different biowastes i.e. microalgae, cornstalk, cow manure and swine manure were used as the feedstock of HTL to create wastewater with diverse molecule spectrum, whereas ten strains i.e. five gram-positive strains and five gram-negative strains were employed to represent typical pathogenic microorganism. HTL wastewater exhibited antibacterial potential and obvious reduction on cell viability at high inclusion ratio, although the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and cell response intensity varied depending on different HTL feedstocks and strain species. The decreased ATP generation and increased H2O2 accumulation in treated cells further confirmed the inhibition of HTL wastewater on the cell metabolism. The antibacterial mechanism of HTL wastewater was confirmed, including damage to biomolecules or membranes, depletion of crucial components, disruption of metabolic circuits and imbalance of creation of redox cofactor. The complex compounds in HTL wastewater were probably attributed to the multiple inhibition pathways and the relationship among those multiple pathways was speculated. The present study contributes to the mechanism analysis of complex compound mixture and bactericide characteristics of HTL wastewater.

Abstract
It is well-known that some bacteria can promote human and animal health. Bacteria of the genus Carnobacterium, while underexplored, have demonstrated significant probiotic and bioprotective potential. In this review, the recent scientific advances in this area are discussed. There are several requirements for a strain to be considered a probiotic or bioprotective agent, including the absence of antimicrobial resistance and the ability to colonize the gastrointestinal tract. Several researchers have reported such features in Carnobacterium bacteria, especially with regard to the production of antimicrobial substances. Research into animal production has advanced, especially in the aquaculture field, wherein inhibitory activity has been demonstrated against several important pathogens (for example Vibrio), and improvement in zootechnical indexes is evident. With respect to human health-related applications, research is still in the early stages. However, excellent in vitro results against pathogens, such as Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, have been reported. Carnobacterium bacteria have been assessed for a variety of applications in food, including direct application to the matrix and application to smart packaging, with proven effectiveness against Listeria monocytogenes. However, there is a lack of in vivo studies on Carnobacterium applications, which hinders its applications in various industries despite its high potential.

Abstract
Glucose oxidase is a subset of oxidoreductase enzymes that catalyzes the transfer of electrons from an oxidant to a reductant. Glucose oxidases use oxygen as an external electron acceptor that releases hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). Glucose oxidase has many applications in commercial processes, including improving the color and taste, increasing the persistence of food materials, removing the glucose from the dried egg, and eliminating the oxygen from different juices and beverages. Moreover, glucose oxidase, along with catalase, is used in glucose testing kits (especially in biosensors) to detect and measure the presence of glucose in industrial and biological solutions (e.g., blood and urine specimens). Hence, glucose oxidase is a valuable enzyme in the industry and medical diagnostics. Therefore, evaluating the structure and function of glucose oxidase is crucial for modifying as well as improving its catalytic properties. Finding different sources of glucose oxidase is an effective way to find the type of enzyme with the desired catalysis. Besides, the recombinant production of glucose oxidase is the best approach to produce sufficient amounts of glucose oxidase for various uses. Accordingly, the study of various aspects of glucose oxidase in biotechnology and bioprocessing is crucial.

Abstract
D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO) is widely used in the industrial preparation of L-amino acids, and cultivating Escherichia coli (E. coli) expressing DAAO for the biosynthesis of L-phosphinothricin (L-PPT) is very attractive. At present, the biomass production of DAAO by fermentation is still limited in large-scale industrial applications because the expression of DAAO during the fermentation process inhibits the growth of host cells, which limits higher cell density. In this study, the factors that inhibit the growth of bacterial cells during a 5-L fed-batch fermentation process were explored, and the fermentation process was optimized by co-expressing catalase (CAT), by balancing the biomass and the enzyme activity, and by adding exogenous D-alanine (D-Ala) to relieve the limitation of DAAO on the cells and optimize fermentation. Under optimal conditions, the DO-STAT feeding mode with DO controlled at 30% ± 5% and the addition of 27.5 g/L lactose mixed with 2 g/L D-Ala during induction at 28 °C resulted in the production of 26.03 g dry cell weight (DCW)/L biomass and 390.0 U/g DCW specific activity of DAAO; an increase of 78% and 84%, respectively, compared with the initial fermentation conditions. The fermentation strategy was successfully scale-up to a 5000-L fermenter.
