Abstract
Agriculture in the 21st century faces grave challenges to meet the unprecedented food demand of the burgeoning population as well as reduce the ecological footprint for achieving sustainable development goals. The extensive use of harsh synthetic surfactants in pesticides and the agrochemical industry has substantial adverse impacts on the soil and environment due to their toxic and non-biodegradable nature. Biosurfactants derived from plant, animal, and microbial sources can be an eco-friendly alternative to chemical surfactants. Microbes producing biosurfactants play a noteworthy role in biofilm formation, plant pathogen elimination, biodegradation, bioremediation, improving nutrient bioavailability, and can thrive well under stressful environments. Microbial biosurfactants are well suited for heavy metal and organic contaminants remediation in agricultural soil due to their low toxicity, high activity at fluctuating temperatures, biodegradability, and stability over a wide array of environmental conditions. This green technology will improve the agricultural soil quality by increasing the soil flushing efficiency, mobilization, and solubilization of nutrients by forming metal-biosurfactant complexes, and through the dissemination of complex nutrients. Such characteristics help it to play a pivotal role in environmental sustainability in the foreseeable future, which is required to increase the viability of biosurfactants for extensive commercial uses, making them accessible, affordable, and economically sustainable.

Abstract
Biosurfactants (BS) are becoming a solution for today's world since they are considered a reasonable and eco-friendly option for use in products that require surfactants. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of purified fractions containing biosurfactants produced by the yeast Wickerhamomyces anomalus CCMA 0358 using waste cooking oil (WCO) as substrate. Mixed fractions were separated and characterized by TLC, MPLC, GC-MS, LC-OMS, LC-SQMS, FTIR, 1H, 13C, DEPT 135, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC. The results confirmed the presence of palmitic acid and oleic acid fatty acids, derived from the core biosurfactant structure; however, the core could not be identified. The crude biosurfactant and its purified fractions were evaluated against pathogenic bacteria, and the purified fractions of the biosurfactant are more efficient at inhibitory and bactericidal activities than the crude biosurfactant. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluated the antimicrobial activity of purified fractions of biosurfactants produced by the species Wickerhamomyces anomalus. Therefore, the purification of biosurfactants can emerge as an interesting alternative to increase the bioactivity of the compounds and ensure greater efficiency and biotechnological employability. Abstract
Globally, the rapid increase in the human population has given rise to a variety of industries, which have produced a variety of wastes. Due to their detrimental effects on both human and environmental health, pollutants from industry have taken centre stage among the various types of waste produced. The amount of waste produced has therefore increased the demand for effective waste management. In order to create valuable chemicals for sustainable waste management, trash must be viewed as valuable addition. One of the most environmentally beneficial and sustainable choices is to use garbage to make biosurfactants. The utilization of waste in the production of biosurfactant provides lower processing costs, higher availability of feedstock and environmental friendly product along with its characteristics. The current review focuses on the use of industrial wastes in the creation of sustainable biosurfactants and discusses how biosurfactants are categorized. Waste generation in the fruit industry, agro-based industries, as well as sugar-industry and dairy-based industries is documented. Each waste and wastewater are listed along with its benefits and drawbacks. This review places a strong emphasis on waste management, which has important implications for the bioeconomy. It also offers the most recent scientific literature on industrial waste, including information on the role of renewable feedstock for the production of biosurfactants, as well as the difficulties and unmet research needs in this area.

Abstract
In this study, the biosurfactants (Bio-SFs) producing bacteria are screened from the selected alkaline lake of Ethiopia, and the potential bacterial strain and their produced Bio-SFs are further characterized. In an initial screening, 25 bacterial isolates were isolated, and among those, the bacterial isolate assigned as CS1 was identified as the most potent producer of Bio-SFs using a subsequent characterization process. The CS1 strain was identified as Serratia sp. via biochemical and molecular methods. An emulsion index (E24) of 69.06 ± 0.11% was obtained for CS1 after 5 days of incubation time at 30 °C. The CS1-extracted Bio-SFs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and it indicated that the type of biosurfactant produced was a glycolipid. The stability of the crude Bio-SFs was characterized, and the optimal conditions were found to be 80 °C, pH 8, and 3% NaCl, respectively. The extracted Bio-SFs were compatible with tested commercial detergents, and its efficiency increased from 12.2 ± 0.1% to 67.1 ± 0.17% and 70.43 ± 0.11% when combined with commercially available detergent brands in Ethiopia such as Taza and Largo, respectively. This study suggests that the isolated S. marcescens CS1 strain has the potential to produce Bio-SFs that are viable competence to replace the use of synthetic chemicals in the production of commercial detergents.

Abstract
This research aimed to optimize a lipopeptide biosurfactant produced from Bacillus sp. SHA302 due to its high efficiency of heavy metal release in soil. The results demonstrated that the metal release capacity of the lipopeptide biosurfactant alone increased with increasing the biosurfactant concentration. Among treatments with different biosurfactant concentrations plus acid, the highest metal release rates of 53.8% ± 1.4 and 39.3% ± 1.7 for Zn and Pb, respectively, were observed in the critical micelle concentration (CMC) + HCl treatment. The results of a factorial experiment designed for optimizing biosurfactant production showed that among five inexpensive carbon sources and six mineral nitrogen sources, sugar beet molasses (1%) and ammonium chloride (0.1%) were the most efficient sources in lowering the surface tension (ST) of the culture media to 32.2 ± 0.76 mN/m. The second step of the experiment was a Plackett-Burman design with 11 factors and showed that the four factors of pH, ammonium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and molasses significantly affected (P < 0.05) the changes in ST and biosurfactant production. The third step of the experiment was done using the response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design. The results showed that a pH of 7.3, 1.5 g/l of ammonium chloride, 0.3 g/l of magnesium sulfate, and 10% of sugar beet molasses yielded values of 29.2 ± 0.71 mN/m and 5.74 ± 0.52 g/l for the two variables of ST and biosurfactant production, respectively, which reached their most optimal levels.

Abstract
Biosurfactants constitute amphiphilic molecules, receiving increased attention as environmentally benign, biodegradable alternatives to substitute for the petroleum derived counterparts in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics applications. However, their high production cost hinders industrial production. In this study, fifty GRAS lactobacilli strains were screened for their ability to produce biosurfactants, implementing different substrates. Cheese whey permeate (CWP) was also assessed as a low-cost and inherent lactobacilli substrate, aiming to mitigate its polluting impact, expand valorization strategies, alleviate costs deriving from commercial supplements and enhance overall sustainability. Surface tension, emulsification activity (E24) and oil displacement were deployed to identify the most promising candidates. Results reveal surface tension as the most robust method and underline the effect of substrate on biosurfactant synthesis. Likewise, this study indicates the fundamental role of including the final fermentation substrate (CWP) during strain selection to avoid misinterpretation of results and enhance subsequent bioprocess integration.

Abstract
This paper presents experimental results from the use of biosurfactants in the remediation of a soil from a smelter in Poland. In the soil, concentrations of Cu (1659.1 mg/kg) and Pb (290.8 mg/kg) exceeded the limit values. Triple batch washing was tested as a soil treatment. Three main variants were used, each starting with a different plant-derived (saponin, S; tannic acid, T) or microbial (rhamnolipids, R) biosurfactant solution in the first washing, followed by 9 different sequences using combinations of the tested biosurfactants (27 in total). The efficiency of the washing was determined based on the concentration of metal removed after each washing (CR), the cumulative removal efficiency (Ecumulative) and metal stability (calculated as the reduced partition index, Ir, based on the metal fractions from BCR sequential extraction). The type of biosurfactant sequence influenced the CR values. The variants that began with S and R had the highest average Ecumulative for Cu and Pb, respectively. The Ecumulative value correlated very strongly (r > 0.8) with the stability of the residual metals in the soil. The average Ecumulative and stability of Cu were the highest, 87.4% and 0.40, respectively, with the S-S-S, S-S-T, S-S-R and S-R-T sequences. Lead removal and stability were the highest, 64-73% and 0.36-0.41, respectively, with the R-R-R, R-R-S, R-S-R and R-S-S sequences. Although the loss of biosurfactants was below 10% after each washing, sequential washing with biosurfactants enriched the soil with external organic carbon by an average of 27-fold (S-first variant), 24-fold (R first) or 19-fold (T first). With regard to environmental limit values, metal stability and organic carbon resources, sequential washing with different biosurfactants is a beneficial strategy for the remediation of smelter-contaminated soil with given properties.

Abstract
Heavy metal toxicity has become a pressing ecological problem that affects the ecosystems through bioaccumulation, representing a serious public health hazard. Many conventional strategies have been developed and applied to decontaminate and restore metal-contaminated areas. However, these conventional approaches are not very suitable and environmentally safe for heavy metal remediation because of their high operational costs, high energy requirements, post-waste disposal problems, and secondary pollutant generation. Thus, biosurfactant-based bioremediation of heavy metals is a sustainable and promising approach because of its biodegradation capability, economic effectiveness, and ecofriendly nature. Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp., Citrobacter freundii, and Candida tropicalis have been isolated as potential sources of biosurfactants and produce compounds such as surfactin, rhamnolipids, and sophorolipids. Owing to the severity of heavy metal pollution in certain parts of the environment, biosurfactants have garnered great interest and attention as an emerging multi-functional technology of the new century for successful removal of heavy metal pollutants. The present study describes the role of biosurfactants in the bioremediation of heavy metals from contaminated environments. Moreover, the interaction mechanism underlying biosurfactant-metal complexation and metal remediation are discussed. Based on the review of the literature, further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanistic roles and explore the structural characterization and gene regulation of biosurfactants to improve their productivity and expand their applicability in bioremediation.

Abstract
Nowadays, the worldwide search regarding renewable products from natural resources is increasing due to the toxicity of chemical counterparts. Biosurfactants are surface-active compounds that contain several physiological functions that are used in industries like food, pharmaceutical, petroleum and agriculture. Microbial lipopeptides have gained more attention among the researchers for their low toxicity, efficient action and good biodegradability when compared with other surfactants. Because of their versatile properties, lipopeptide compounds are utilized in the remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants. This review presented a depth evaluation of lipopeptide surfactants in the bioremediation process and their properties to maintain a sustainable environment. Lipopeptide can acts as a replacement to chemical surfactants only if they meet industrial-scale production and low-cost substrates. This review also demonstrated the production of a lipopeptide biosurfactant from a low-cost substrate and depicted plausible techniques to manage the substrate residues to determine its ability in the different applications particularly in the bioremediation process.

Abstract
Current research energies are fixated on the synthesis of environmentally friendly and non-hazardous products, which include finding and recognizing biosurfactants that can substitute synthetic surfactants. Microbial biosurfactants are surface-active compounds synthesized intracellularly or extracellularly. To use biosurfactants in various industries, it is essential to understand scientific engagements that demonstrate its potentials as real advancement in the 21st century. Other than applying a substantial effect on the world economic market, engineered hyper-producing microbial strains in combination with optimized cultivation parameters have made it probable for many industrial companies to receive the profits of 'green' biosurfactant innovation. There needs to be an emphasis on the worldwide state of biosurfactant synthesis, expression of biosurfactant genes in expressive host systems, the recent developments, and prospects in this line of research. Thus, molecular dynamics with respect to genetic engineering of biosynthetic genes are proposed as new biotechnological tools for development, improved synthesis, and applications of biosurfactants. For example, mutant and hyper-producing recombinants have been designed efficaciously to advance the nature, quantity, and quality of biosurfactants. The fastidious and deliberate investigation will prompt a comprehension of the molecular dynamics and phenomena in new microorganisms. Throughout the decade, valuable data on the molecular genetics of biosurfactant have been produced, and this solid foundation would encourage application-oriented yields of the biosurfactant production industry and expand its utilization in diverse fields. Therefore, the conversations among different interdisciplinary experts from various scientific interests such as microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics are indispensable and significant to accomplish these objectives.

Abstract
Biosurfactants have aroused considerable interest due to the possibility of acquiring useful products that are tolerant to processing techniques used in industries. Some yeasts synthesize biosurfactants that offer antioxidant activity and thermal resistance and have no risk of toxicity or pathogenicity, demonstrating potential use in food formulations. The aim of the present study was to assess the use of a biosurfactant produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae URM 6670 to replace egg yolk in a cookie formulation. The yeast was grown in a medium containing 1% waste soybean oil and 1% corn steep liquor. The biosurfactant was isolated using a novel method and was structurally characterized using FT-IR, NMR, and GC/FID. Thermal stability was determined using thermogravimetry (TG)/differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and antioxidant activity was investigated using three methods. Cytotoxicity tests were performed using the MTT assay with mouse fibroblast and macrophage lines. In the final step, the biosurfactant was incorporated into the formulation of a cookie dough replacing egg yolk. The physical properties and texture profile were analyzed before and after baking. The surface and interfacial tensions of the culture medium after the production process were 26.64 ± 0.06 and 9.12 ± 0.04 mN/m, respectively, and the biosurfactant concentration was 5.84 ± 0.17 g/L after isolation. In the structural characterization by NMR and FT-IR, the biosurfactant from S. cerevisiae exhibited a glycolipid structure, with the fatty acid profile revealing a high percentage of linoleic acid (50.58%). The thermal analysis demonstrated stability at the industrial application temperature, with the negligible loss of mass at temperatures of up to 200°C. The biosurfactant was non-toxic to the fibroblast and macrophage cell lines, with cell inhibition less than 15%. The incorporation of the biosurfactant into the cookie dough did not alter the physical or physicochemical properties of the product after baking. In the analysis of the texture profile before baking, the substitution of egg yolk with the biosurfactant did not alter the properties of firmness, cohesiveness, or elasticity compared to the standard formulation. Therefore, the biosurfactant produced by S. cerevisiae URM 6670 has potential applications in the food industry as a replacement for egg yolk.
