Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examined associations between various cognitive domains and sleep discrepancy (self-reported vs objectively measured sleep), and evaluated interactive associations with insomnia status (non-insomnia vs insomnia). METHODS Older adults (N = 65, Mage = 68.72, SD = 5.06, 43 insomnia/22 non-insomnia) aged 60+ reported subjective sleep (7 days of sleep diaries), objective sleep assessment (one-night polysomnography, PSG, via Sleep Profiler during the 7-day period), and completed cognitive tasks (National Institutes of Health Toolbox-Cognition Battery) measuring attention and processing speed, working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and episodic memory. The sleep diary variable corresponding to the same one night of PSG was used to calculate the sleep discrepancy (diary minus PSG parameter) variables for total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, and sleep efficiency. Regression analyses determined independent and interactive (with insomnia status) associations between cognition and sleep discrepancy, controlling for age, sex, apnea-hypopnea index, and sleep medication usage. RESULTS Working memory interacted with insomnia status in associations with sleep discrepancy related to TST and sleep efficiency. In those with insomnia, worse working memory was associated with shorter self-reported TST (p = .008) and lower sleep efficiency (p = .04) than PSG measured. DISCUSSION In older adults with insomnia, worse working memory may be a contributing factor to sleep discrepancy. Future investigations of underlying neurophysiological factors and consideration of other objective sleep measures (actigraphy) are warranted. Prospective findings may help determine whether sleep discrepancy is a potential marker of future cognitive decline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Discrepancies between sleep diaries and sensor-based sleep parameters are widely recognized. This study examined the effect of showing sensor-based sleep parameters while completing a daily diary. The provision of sensor-based data was expected to reduce variance but not change the mean of self-reported sleep parameters, which would in turn align better with sensor-based data compared to a control diary. METHOD In a crossover study, 24 volunteers completed week-long periods of control diary (digital sleep diary without sensor-based data feedback) or integrated diary (diary with device feedback), washout, and then the other diary condition. RESULTS The integrated diary reduced self-reported total sleep time (TST) by <10 minutes and reduced variance in TST. The integrated diary did not impact mean sleep onset latency (SOL) and, unexpectedly, the variance in SOL increased. The integrated diary improved both bias and limits of agreement for SOL and TST. CONCLUSIONS Integration of wearable, sensor-based device data in a sleep diary has little impact on means, mixed evidence for less variance, and better agreement with sensor-based data than a traditional diary. How the diary impacts reporting and sensor-based sleep measurements should be explored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND Discrepancies between sleep diaries and actigraphy occur among individuals with insomnia. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) improves insomnia but the impact on discrepancy is unclear. This study examined CBT-I's effects on actigraphy-diary discrepancy and explored sleep-related beliefs and attitudes as a mediator. PATIENTS/METHODS Participants were 108 (age M±SD = 47.23 ± 12.42, 67.60 % female) adults with insomnia and major depressive disorder from the Treatment of Insomnia and Depression study. They were randomized to 7 sessions of CBT-I or sham Quasi-Desensitization Therapy for Insomnia (DTI), plus 16 weeks of antidepressants. Two weeks of actigraphy and sleep diary were collected at baseline, mid-treatment, end-treatment. Differences between sleep diary and actigraphy total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep efficiency (SE) were calculated. Participants completed Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep Scale (DBAS) at baseline and mid-treatment. RESULTS At baseline, diary (versus actigraphy) TST was shorter (1.1 ± 1.41h), whilst SOL (21.64 ± 41.25min) and WASO (17.45 ± 61.99min) were longer. Mixed effects models using daily data showed that after adjusting for age and sex, participants in the CBT-I group (versus DTI) showed greater reduction in all actigraphy-diary discrepancy domains (all p-values<.01), reductions evident from mid-treatment. Group differences on actigraphy-diary discrepancy reductions in TST, SOL, and SE (not WASO) were mediated by changes in DBAS from baseline to mid-treatment (all p-values<.05). Changes in discrepancy did not mediate insomnia symptom changes (p-values>.39). CONCLUSIONS CBT-I reduced actigraphy-diary discrepancy in individuals with comorbid insomnia and depression; this reduction was associated with improved sleep-related attitudes, a therapeutic target of CBT-I. Abstract
Objective The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of global postural re-education (GPR) on sleep quality and stress in female health science lecturers. Methods A total of 24 female university lecturers were allocated in this randomized controlled trial into intervention (n = 12) and control (n = 12) groups. The intervention group underwent familiarization and training on the therapy to execute an 8-week treatment with GPR. Data collected on sleep quality were analyzed using 24-h accelerometry (Actigraphy GT3X+) in addition to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire score as well as the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) anxiety questionnaire. Data on stress were collected by measuring salivary cortisol. Results After comparing the GPR of the groups, there was a main effect of the group (F = 5.278, p = 0.044) for PSQI. The post-hoc analysis revealed that both groups decreased scores between pre- and post-treatment. Additionally, post-treatment, there were differences between groups. For sleep latency, there were main effects of group (F = 6.118, p = 0.031) and score × group (F = 9.343, p = 0.011) interactions. The post-hoc analysis revealed that treatment groups decreased scores between pre- and post-treatment, and there were differences between groups (all p < 0.050). Conclusion The self-administered GPR improves sleep quality in female university lecturers, providing a valuable self-regulation tool for enhanced sleep quality and enhanced academic performance. Further study may help to develop this as a potential tool to help university lecturers' job performance.

Abstract
Due to insufficient treatment options for insomnia, effective solutions are urgently needed. We evaluated the effects of a CBT-I-based app combining sleep training with subjective and objective sleep monitoring on (i) sleep and (ii) subjective-objective sleep discrepancies (SOSD). Fifty-seven volunteers (20-76 years; MAge = 45.67 ± 16.38; 39 female) suffering from sleep problems were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 28) or a waitlist control group (CG, n = 29). During the 6-week app phase, the EG used the CBT-I-based programme and a heart rate sensor for daily sleep monitoring and -feedback, while the CG used sleep monitoring only. Sleep was measured (i) subjectively via questionnaires (Insomnia Severity Index, ISI; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), (ii) objectively via ambulatory polysomnography (PSG), and (iii) continuously via heart-rate sensor and sleep diaries. Data revealed interactions for ISI (p = 0.003, ƞ2 part = 0.11) and PSQI (p = 0.050, ƞ2 part = 0.05), indicating training-specific improvements in EG, yet not in CG. While PSG-derived outcomes appear to be less training-specific, a tendential reduction in wake after sleep onset (WASO) was found in EG (p = 0.061, d = 0.55). Regarding changes in SOSD, the results indicate improvements during the app phase (EG) for sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, and WASO (p ≤ 0.022, d ≥ 0.46); for total sleep time both groups showed a SOSD reduction. The findings indicate beneficial effects of a novel smartphone app on sleep and SOSD. More scientific evaluation of such digital programmes is needed to ultimately help in reducing the gap in non-pharmacological insomnia treatment.

Abstract
The importance polysomnography (PSG) in the diagnosis and treatment process of insomnia disorder (ID) remains highly disputed. This review summarises the state of the science regarding PSG indications and findings in ID, and the indications to conduct PSG in ID as stated by relevant guidelines. It then highlights the most relevant questions regarding the topic, including the relevance of ID subtyping, to allow an individualised pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatment approach.

Abstract
There is an urgent need for easily accessible treatment options for sleep problems to reduce the current treatment gap in receiving cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Using a randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the efficacy of a CBT-I-based online program on sleep. Fifty-three volunteers (21-71 years; MAge = 44.6 ± 12.5; 27 female) suffering from impaired sleep were randomly allocated either to the experimental group (EG, n = 27) or to an active control group (CG, n = 26). The EG participated in a 6-week CBT-I-based online program, while the CG received psychoeducation and sleep hygiene instructions. Sleep was assessed both objectively via ambulatory polysomnography (PSG) as well as subjectively via questionnaires at three time points (baseline, pre- and post-intervention). A one-month follow-up assessment was performed using questionnaires. The EG showed small but reliable improvements from pre- to post-intervention in PSG-derived wake after sleep onset (from 58.6 min to 42.5 min; p < 0.05) and sleep efficiency (from 86.0% to 89.2%; p < 0.05). Furthermore, subjective sleep quality (assessed via Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) improved significantly during intervention (p = 0.011) and follow-up (p = 0.015) in the EG alone. The Insomnia Severity Index decreased from pre- to post-intervention in both groups (EG: p = 0.003, CG: p = 0.008), while it further improved during follow-up (p = 0.035) in the EG alone. We show that a CBT-I-based online program can improve sleep not only subjectively but also objectively and can be a viable alternative when face-to-face interventions are not available.

Abstract
Actigraphy has a consolidated role in Insomnia and Circadian Rhythm Sleep-Wake Disorders (CRSWD) and recent studies have highlighted the use of actigraphy for narcolepsy and REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). This review aims at summarising the results of studies published over the last decade regarding the use of actigraphy. Thirty-five studies proved eligible, and results were analysed separately for insomnia, narcolepsy and RBD. Actigraphy showed to consistently differentiate insomnia patients from healthy controls. Furthermore, the application of advanced analytical techniques has been shown to provide both unique insights into the physiology of insomnia and sleep misperception and to improve the specificity of actigraphy in detecting wakefulness within sleep periods. Regarding narcolepsy, several studies showed that actigraphy can detect peculiar sleep/wake disruption and the effects of pharmacological treatments. Finally, although the number of studies in RBD patients is still limited, the available evidence indicates a reduced amplitude of the activity pattern, sleep-wake rhythm dysregulation and daytime sleepiness. Therefore, the potential use of these markers as predictors of phenoconversion should be further explored. In conclusion, quantitative actigraphy presents a renewed interest when considering the possibility of using actigraphy in clinical sleep medicine to diagnose, monitor, and follow sleep disorders other than CRSWD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the network structure underlying the symptoms of menopausal syndrome and to identify the central and bridge symptoms of menopause among middle-aged women. METHODS This is a cross-sectional survey study conducted in the Chinese community with a total of 1829 women aged 40-65 years. The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) was used to assess the menopausal syndrome, including somato-vegetative, psychological, and urogenital subdomains. The network analysis was performed to determine the central and bridge symptoms of menopause. RESULTS In the network of menopausal symptoms, anxiety, vaginal dryness, depressive mood, and irritability were the most central symptoms. Depressive mood, anxiety, and vaginal dryness were also detected as the bridge symptoms. The estimated network between the symptoms had good stability (CS-strength = 0.75 and CS-edge = 0.75). CONCLUSION The present network analysis provided unique insights into the inner structure of menopausal symptoms. Psychological symptoms should be considered as the core symptoms in developing relevant interventions to improve the health and well-being of middle-aged women.

Abstract
A discrepancy in subjective and objective estimations of sleep duration, which often diverge, could have long-term adverse effects on health outcomes in older adults. Using data from 2674 older adult men (≥ 65 years of age) of the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Sleep Study, we assessed the longitudinal association between misperception index (MI), calculated as MI = (objective sleep duration - subjective sleep duration)/objective sleep duration, and all-cause mortality. During the follow-up with a mean (standard deviation) of 10.8 (4.2) years, 1596 deaths were observed. As a continuous variable, MI showed a linear relationship with all-cause mortality after adjusting for multiple covariates, including polysomnography-measured objective sleep duration [fully adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56-0.84]. As a categorical variable, the lowest MI quartile (vs. the interquartile MI range) was associated with increased mortality (fully adjusted HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.12-1.46), whereas the highest MI quartile was not associated with mortality (fully adjusted HR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.85-1.11). The subjective overestimation of sleep duration may be a risk factor for all-cause mortality in older men. Future studies should examine why subjective overestimation of sleep duration is associated with all-cause mortality from a physiological perspective.

The Effect of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) on Subjective–Objective Sleep Discrepancy in Individuals with Co-Morbid Insomnia and Sleep Apnoea: A Randomised Controlled Trial. Abstract
People with insomnia frequently underestimate the duration of their sleep compared to objective polysomnography-measured sleep duration. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the most effective treatment for insomnia and also reduces the degree of sleep underestimation. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep disorder characterised by frequent narrowing (hypopnoea) and closure (apnoea) of the upper airway during sleep. Comorbid insomnia and sleep apnoea (COMISA) is a prevalent and debilitating disorder. No study has investigated subjectively (sleep diary) versus objectively (polysomnography) measured sleep discrepancies (SOSD) in individuals with COMISA before or following CBT-I. This randomised waitlist-controlled trial investigated SOSD in 145 participants with COMISA before and 6-weeks after CBT-I (n = 72) versus control (n = 73). All participants were studied prior to continuous positive airway pressure treatment for sleep apnoea. At baseline, participants underestimated their total sleep time (mean ± SD −51.9 ± 94.1 min) and sleep efficiency (−9.6 ± 18.3%), and overestimated sleep onset latency (34.5 ± 86.1 min; all p = < 0.001). Mixed models indicated a main effect of time on reduction of SOSD in both groups, but no between-group difference in the reduction of any SOSD parameters. These findings may indicate that untreated OSA contributes to a discrepancy between perceived and objective sleep parameters in people with COMISA that is not amenable to CBT-I alone (ACTRN12613001178730).

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Periocular skin warming before bedtime has been demonstrated to improve subjective sleep initiation in healthy adults with sleep difficulties scored six or higher in the Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Index. This study aimed to investigate the effects of periocular skin warming on sleep initiation and thermoregulation processes in patients with insomnia disorder. METHODS Participants included those with sleep difficulty (n = 22) and those with insomnia disorder (n = 16). Individuals from both groups were assessed at baseline (habitual sleep-wake schedule) and after two intervention conditions (use of a warming eye mask or a sham eye mask before habitual bedtime). The subjective and electroencephalographic sleep onset latency, along with proximal and distal skin temperature after periocular skin warming, were evaluated. RESULTS Periocular skin warming reduced objective sleep onset latency in independently of the group. Foot temperature and foot-proximal temperature gradient after getting into bed increased with periocular skin warming in independently of the group. However, the increase in hand temperature was observed only in the insomnia disorder group. Periocular skin warming also increased the normalized high frequency component of heart rate variability in independently of the group. The reduction of objective sleep onset latency was strongly associated with heat dissipation from the foot skin region. CONCLUSION These results suggest that periocular skin warming promotes sleep initiation by enhancing heat dissipation from the distal skin regions in individuals with sleep difficulty and insomnia disorder. Periocular skin warming could thus be a novel non-pharmacological therapy for insomnia disorder.
