Abstract
AIM To evaluate the vaccine response and the effect of the booster dose on COVID-19 positivity in haemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients who received and did not receive BNT162b2 as a booster dose after two doses of CoronaVac. METHODS The study included 80 PD and 163 HD patients, who had been administered two doses of the CoronaVac. Antibody levels were measured on Days 42 and 90 after the first dose. Measurements were repeated on Day 181 after the first dose in the patients that received two vaccine doses and on Day 28 after the third dose in those that also received the booster dose. Antibody levels below 50 AU/mL were considered negative. RESULTS The seropositivity rate was similar in the HD and PD group on Days 42 and 90 (p = 0.212 and 0.720). All patients were seropositive in the booster group. The antibody level was lower in the patients that received CoronaVac as the booster compared to those administered BNT162b2 in HD and PD groups (p < 0.001 and 0.002). COVID-19 positivity was detected in 11 patients (7 = had not received the booster dose, 4 = had received third dose of CoronaVac). The multivariate analysis revealed that as age increased, COVID-19 positivity also increased (OR: 1.080, 95% CI: 1.017 - 1.146, p = 0.012), while booster dose administration decreased this positivity (OR: 0.113, 95% CI: 0.028 - 0.457, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Our results may indicate the need for additional vaccination doses in patients with HD and PD. Our findings indicate a higher antibody response in dialysis patients with heterologous BNT162b2 as a booster dose after two doses of CoronaVac compared to homologous CoronaVac.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reports on COVID-19 in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are scarce in China. This study aimed to describe the characteristics and outcomes of PD patients with COVID-19 after China abandoned the 'zero-COVID' policy. METHODS This single-centre retrospective study included patients receiving PD who underwent testing for COVID-19 infections between 7 December 2022 and 7 January 2023. Outcomes of interest included factors associated with positive COVID-19 testing result and clinical outcomes including COVID-19-related hospitalisation and severe COVID-19, which were analysed using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS A total of 349 PD patients (male 53.6%, age 49 ± 13 years old) were included, and 235 patients (67.3%) were infected. There were no significant differences between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients other than higher proportion of vaccinated patients and slow transporters in the patients who tested positive for COVID-19 (44.7% vs. 28.1%, p = 0.003; 8.7% vs. 1.8%, p = 0.03, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed COVID-19 was associated with vaccination (odds ratio (OR): 1.71, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-2.86) and slow transport type (compared with average transport type, OR: 4.52, 95% CI: 1.01-20.21). Among the patients with infection, 38 (16.2%) patients were hospitalised, 18 (7.7%) patients had severe disease and 9 (3.8%) patients died. In multivariate logistic analysis, both age (OR: 1.04, 95% CI: 1.01-1.07; OR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02-1.11) and hyponatremia (OR: 5.44, 95% CI: 1.63-18.13; OR: 6.50, 95% CI: 1.77-23.85) were independent risk factors for COVID-19-related hospitalisation and severe disease. CONCLUSIONS Although vaccinated patients were more likely to have tested positive for COVID-19 infection, they appeared to have less severe infection and less need for hospitalisation. Patients who were older with a history of hyponatremia were more likely to experience adverse outcomes from COVID-19.

Abstract
Due to the nature of the disease, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients suffer from dysfunction of the adaptive immune system, which leads to a poorer response to vaccination. Accordingly, it is crucial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of management strategies, including vaccinations, which could potentially reduce the risk of respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia, influenza, or COVID-19, and its associated outcomes. We searched PubMed, CENTRAL, ScienceDirect, Scopus, ProQuest, and Google Scholar databases using designated MeSH keywords. The risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I. The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach. Relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. Heterogeneity was investigated using forest plots and I2 statistics. This systematic review included a total of 48 studies, with 13 studies of influenza (H1N1 and H3N2) vaccination and 35 studies of COVID-19 vaccination. H1N1 vaccination in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis induced lower seroconversion rates (RR 0.62, 95% CI: 0.56-0.68, p <0.00001) and lower seroprotection rates (RR 0.76, 95% CI: 0.70-0.83, p <0.00001) compared to controls. H3N2 vaccination in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis yielded lower seroconversion rates (RR 0.76, 95% CI: 0.68-0.85, p <0.00001) and lower seroprotection rates (RR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.77-0.90, p <0.00001) compared to controls. Twenty-nine studies demonstrate significantly lower antibody levels in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis compared to the controls following COVID-19 vaccination. This review presents evidence of lower seroconversion and seroprotection rates after vaccination against viral respiratory diseases in patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis. Since hemodialysis patients are more susceptible to infection and severe disease progression, a weakened yet substantial serological response can be considered adequate to recommend vaccination against respiratory diseases in this population. Vaccination dose, schedule, or strategy adjustments should be considered in stable ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Data regarding inactivated vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) are limited. We aimed to investigate humoral responses induced by CoronaVac compared to BNT162b2 in this population. METHODS In this multicenter prospective cohort study, adult patients undergoing MHD who lacked a history of COVID-19 and decided to get vaccinated with BNT162b2 or CoronaVac were enrolled. Participants provided serum samples before, 1 and 3 months after 2 doses. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies against receptor-binding domain of the virus were measured, and levels ≥50 AU/mL were considered as positive. Breakthrough infections and adverse events were recorded. RESULTS Ninety-two patients were included, 68 (73.9%) of whom were seronegative at baseline. BNT162b2 and CoronaVac were administered in 38 (55.9%) and 30 (44.1%) patients. At 1 month, seropositivity was 93.1% in BNT162b2 and 88% in CoronaVac groups (p = 0.519). Quantitative antibody levels were significantly higher in BNT162b2 (p < 0.001). At 3 months, both seropositivity (96.4% and 78.3%, p = 0.045) and antibody levels (p = 0.001) remained higher in BNT162b2 compared to CoronaVac. Five patients (7.4%) experienced breakthrough COVID-19. Adverse events were more frequent with BNT162b2, although all of them were mild. Multiple linear regression model showed that only vaccine choice (BNT162b2) was related to the humoral response (β = 0.272, p = 0.038). Seropositive patients at baseline (n = 24) had higher antibody levels at any time point. CONCLUSIONS BNT162b2 and CoronaVac induced humoral responses in naïve patients undergoing MHD, which were more robust and durable for 3 months after BNT162b2. Both vaccines created high antibody levels in patients who were seropositive at baseline.

Abstract
Vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) has proven to be the most effective measure to prevent the spread and reduce infection severity. A case report of de novo membranous nephropathy (MN) following immunization with inactivated virus vaccine (CoronaVac®, Sinovac Biotech) is presented here. A 53-year-old man presented with a sudden onset of leg edema a week after receiving an inactivated virus vaccine and a relapse of nephrotic syndrome (NS) with acute kidney injury (AKI) after a booster dose. Screening for serum anti-phospholipase A2 receptor antibody and secondary causes of MN were negative. Kidney biopsy revealed an early MN pattern with focal spike formation, whilst numerous subepithelial electron-dense deposits and a few small deposits in the mesangial area were observed through electron microscopy. A short course of steroids and oral cyclophosphamide was prescribed, resulting in the complete remission of NS and AKI. MN following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination should call for medical importance. Awareness of the association between vaccination and MN should be kept in mind to avoid unnecessary treatment with long-term immunosuppressive agents.

Abstract
BackgroundThe fatality rates and factors associated with death from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in hemodialysis patients have been extensively investigated. However, data on peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients remain scarce.Materials and methodsIn this nationwide cohort study, we assessed the 28-day COVID-19-related fatality rate in PD patients between August 2021 and July 2022 using data from the InCov19-PD registry. Predictors associated with death were evaluated using a multivariable Cox regression model. Changes in functional status before and during COVID-19 were also examined.ResultsA total of 1,487 eligible participants were evaluated. During the study period, 196 participants died within 28 days after COVID-19 diagnosis (case fatality rate: 13%). In a multivariable Cox regression model, an increased risk of death within 28 days after COVID-19 diagnosis among PD patients was independently associated with functional impairment during COVID-19 [adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 2.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.59–3.81], SARS-CoV-2 infection with the Delta variant (HR 2.23, 95% CI 1.55–3.21), and the need for respiratory support (HR 7.13, 95% CI 3.74–13.57) (p < 0.01 for all). Conversely, the number of COVID-19 vaccines administered (HR 0.69, 95% CI 0.55–0.87; p = 0.001) and receiving corticosteroid therapy during COVID-19 (HR 0.72, 95% CI 0.54–0.97; p = 0.03) were associated with a decreased risk of death within 28 days after COVID-19 diagnosis. The number of functionally independent PD patients dropped from 94% at baseline to 63% during COVID-19 (p < 0.01).ConclusionsThe COVID-19-related 28-day fatality rate was high among PD patients. The predictors of COVID-19-related death in PD patients were similar to those in hemodialysis patients. During COVID-19, PD patients commonly experienced functional deterioration.

Abstract
The durability of a three-dose extended primary series of COVID-19 vaccine in dialysis patients remains unknown. Here, we assessed dynamic changes in SARS-CoV-2-specific humoral and cell-mediated immunity at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months after the extended primary series in 29 hemodialyzed (HD), 28 peritoneal dialyzed (PD) patients, and 14 healthy controls. Participants received two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine followed by a dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine. At 6 months, median anti-RBD IgG titers (IQR) significantly declined from baseline in the HD (1741 (1136−3083) BAU/mL vs. 373 (188−607) BAU/mL) and PD (1093 (617−1911) BAU/mL vs. 180 (126−320) BAU/mL) groups, as did the mean percent inhibition of neutralizing antibodies (HD: 96% vs. 81%; PD: 95% vs. 73%) (all p < 0.01). Age and post-vaccination serological response intensity were predictors of early humoral seroprotection loss. In contrast, cell-mediated immunity remained unchanged. In conclusion, humoral immunity declined substantially in dialysis patients, while cell-mediated immunity remained stable 6 months after the extended heterologous primary series of two inactivated SARS-CoV-2/ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine. A booster dose could be considered in dialysis patients 3 months after this unique regimen, particularly in the elderly or those with a modest initial humoral response.

Abstract
Purpose To detect antibody responses to inactivated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine in patients undergoing hemodialysis and to investigate vaccine-related adverse events. Patients and Methods A total of 120 hemodialysis (HD) patients and 24 healthy controls (HCs) who had not been previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and had received their first dose of the inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac; Sinovac Biotech Ltd) were recruited for this study. All participants were scheduled to receive a second dose of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Serum-specific immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 were detected at least 14 days after the second dose of vaccine using a commercial kit. Positive and negative results were defined as a sample/cutoff (S/CO) ratio≥1.00 and <1.00, respectively. Vaccination-related adverse events were assessed using a standardized questionnaire. Results There were no significant differences regarding the seroprevalences of IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and the self-reported vaccination-related adverse events between HD patients and HCs. The analysis results for HD patients suggest that 82 (68.3%) and 27 (22.5%) tested positive for IgG and IgM, respectively. The levels of IgG were higher than IgM levels (P<0.0001). In addition, the IgG-positive group had significantly higher serum albumin levels than the IgG-negative group (P<0.05). Only mild vaccine-related adverse events were observed in two patients (1.66%) and in one healthy individual (4.2%). Conclusion The seroprevalences of IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and vaccination-related adverse effects are similar between HD and HCs. The inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is effective and safe in inducing near-term immunity in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
Viruses infect all types of organisms, causing viral diseases, which are very common in humans. Since viruses use the metabolic pathways of their host cells to replicate, they are difficult to eradicate without affecting the cells. The most effective measures against viral infections are vaccinations and antiviral drugs, which selectively inhibit the viral replication cycle. Both methods have disadvantages, which requires the development of new approaches to the treatment of viral diseases. In the study of animal venoms, it was found that, in addition to toxicity, venoms exhibit other types of biological activity, including an antiviral one, the first mention of which dates back to middle of the last century, but detailed studies of their antiviral activity have been conducted over the past 15 years. The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced these studies and several compounds with antiviral activity have been identified in venoms. Some of them are very active and can be considered as the basis for antiviral drugs. This review discusses recent antiviral studies, the found compounds with high antiviral activity, and the possible mechanisms of their action. The prospects for using the animal venom components to create antiviral drugs, and the expected problems and possible solutions are also considered.

Abstract
The efficacy of the inactivated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) vaccine has not been fully elucidated across the whole spectrum of patients on kidney replacement therapy. We aimed to characterize the long‐term antibody response of inactivated SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccine administered in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and hemodialysis (HD) patients. We performed this prospective observational study in 50 HD, 64 KTR, and 41 healthy control groups (HG) given two doses of CoronaVac. We measured anti‐Spike antibodies after 28 days of every vaccine dose, 3rd and 6th months after the first dose, and compared them between cohorts. After two doses, an anti‐spike immunoglobulin G of ≥50 AU/ml was present in HD, KTR, and HG as 44%, 7.2%, and 58.5%, respectively (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the proportion of antibody titers peaked at 86.5%, 23%, and 97.6% (p < 0.001) at the 3rd month and decreased significantly at the 6th month in most HD and HG participants, whereas this effect was not observed in KTRs from basal until the 6th month (p < 0.001). During the follow‐up, the incidence of coronavirus disease 2019 disease was higher (p < 0.003) in KTRs compared to the other groups, but there was no requirement for an intensive care unit and no death was recorded. We found a negative correlation between antibody seroconversion and age (p < 0.016). The antibody response following inactivated vaccine in dialysis patients is almost comparable to controls for 6 months. In contrast, kidney transplant patients have a poor response. These findings reinforce the need to discuss the vaccination strategy in immunocompromised patients, including the third dose with homologous or heterologous vaccines. Incativated COVID‐19 vaccine has been shown to be effective in the normal population. However, its effectiveness in uremic patients and kidney transplant recipients is controversial. Based on our results, inactivated COVID‐19 vaccine is safe and effective in the short and mid‐term in hemodialysis patients as well as in the normal population, but not in kidney recipients. The incidence of COVID‐19 disease after CoronaVac was significantly higher in kidney transplant recipients compered with hemodialysis and normal population. These findings reinforce the need to discuss the vaccination strategy in immunocompromised patients, including the third dose with homologous or heterologous vaccines.

Abstract
Vaccination with inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus produces suboptimal immune responses among kidney transplant (KT), peritoneal dialyzed (PD), and hemodialyzed (HD) patients. Participants were vaccinated with two-dose inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (V2) and a third dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (V3) at 1–2 months after V2. We enrolled 106 participants: 31 KT, 28 PD, and 31 HD patients and 16 controls. Among KT, PD, and HD groups, median (IQR) of anti-receptor binding domain antibody levels were 1.0 (0.4–26.8), 1092.5 (606.9–1927.2), and 1740.9 (1106–3762.3) BAU/mL, and percent neutralization was 0.9 (0–9.9), 98.8 (95.9–99.5), and 99.4 (98.8–99.7), respectively, at two weeks after V3. Both parameters were significantly increased from V2 across all groups (p < 0.05). Seroconversion and neutralization positivity rates in PD, HD, and control groups were 100% but were impaired in KT patients (39% and 16%, respectively). S1-specific T-cell counts were increased in PD and HD groups (p < 0.05) but not in KT patients. The positive S1-specific T-cell responder rate was > 90% in PD, HD, and control groups, which was higher than that in KT recipients (74%, p < 0.05). The heterologous inactivated virus/ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination strategy elicited greater immunogenicity among dialysis patients; however, inadequate responses remained among KT recipients (TCTR20210226002).
