Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has emerged as a rapidly growing non-communicable disease (NCD) across developed & developing countries. People with diabetes mellitus experience health implications. They develop associated microvascular complications such as neuropathy, nephropathy & retinopathy and macro-vascular complications like coronary artery disease, stroke, amputations etc. These complications increase the socio-economic burden of people living with diabetes. Self-management of diabetes through education is a strong tool that remains under-utilized in clinical settings. The objective of the present study was to explore the role of extended reality for diabetes education & self-management. METHODOLOGY The present study is a bibliometric analysis performed on the Scopus database with keywords: diabetes education, self-management, extended reality, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and Boolean operators AND, OR. The search period ranged from inception till 4th July 2023 with restriction to English language articles. A total of 89 documents were identified in Scopus under multiple domains such as Engineering, Medicine, Health Professions, Nursing among others. The data was exported to the VOS Viewer software for network analysis. RESULTS Out of the total 89 documents, 45-original research, 26-review, 12-conference paper, 3-book, 2-book chapters & 1-note. The highest publications were from the Medicine category. The year of publication of the included documents ranged from 1999 till 2022. The network analysis was performed to explore the association between the included studies (co-authorship, co-occurrence, citation analysis, bibliographic coupling). CONCLUSION The network analysis found the USA to be the leading publisher and the National Institute of Health (NIH) to be the leading funding source. There is limited evidence and a strong future scope to strengthen research productivity on extended reality for diabetes education & self-management.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Diabetes self-management education is an effective factor for improving outcomes and quality of life in patients with diabetes. However, little information is available on the factors associated with participation or non-participation in self-management education programs in people with diabetes. The aim of this study was to explore the factors affecting on the attendance of patients with diabetes in the diabetes self-management education program.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 on 384 patients with diabetes referred to the main comprehensive health centers of Mashhad, Iran. All patients were linked with a diabetes self-management education program that lasted three months and involved 12 sessions. We explore the factors affecting on attending in diabetes self-management education program using Andersen’s behavioral model. Data for independent variables (predisposing, enabling, and need factors) were gathered at the beginning of the training program using registration forms. Dependent variable (attendance of patients with diabetes in the training program) was checked at the end of the program. Univariate and multivariate analysis were done with SPSS v.25.
Results
The results of this study showed that women were less likely to participate in the self-management education program than men (OR=0.414; P<0.05). Also, age, travel time, health status and years with diabetes have negative significantly correlated with participation in the education program (P<0.05). The study showed that patients with diabetes aged≥65 were less participated in the training program than those ≤40 (OR=0.159; P<0.05). Also, patients who lived farther than 40 min away from training center were less likely to participate for this program than patients that live in an area<20 min away from training center (OR=0.196; P<0.05). Odds of attending in training program for patients with poor health status was less than patients with excellent health status (OR=0.282; P<0.05). Participation in training program were low in patients with more than 5-year diabetes duration compared to less than 1 year (OR=0.176; P<0.05).
Conclusion
The implementation of the classes at the right time and online, Reduce the distance between people and the place of the class, providing facilities and providing infrastructure may be appropriate to involve women and the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes is a significant problem in today's society. Considering the possible effect of self-efficacy training on diabetes control, we aimed to investigate its impact on type 2 diabetes control. METHODS This randomized controlled clinical trial was performed in 2018 in Isfahan city. Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT) code for this study is IRCT20190219042762N1 (https://en.irct.ir/trial/37677). In so doing, 161 patients with diabetes were divided into two groups: intervention and control. The intervention group received six self-efficacy and healthy lifestyle training sessions, and self-efficacy strategies were taught in all sessions. Metabolic indices and the data collected by Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES) were analyzed before and three months after training by descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS The self-efficacy score of the intervention group was significantly higher after training (175.7±18 vs. 163.7±26, P = 0.001). Also, the cholesterol level, LDL, and systolic blood pressure reduced significantly in this group after the intervention (167±39 vs. 179±43.7 mg/dl, 94.2±31 vs. 102.6±39 mg/dl, 115.6±1.4 vs. 120.1±1.8 mmHg, respectively. P<0.05). CONCLUSION Generally, self-efficacy training effectively improved metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Despite the growing burden of diabetes in the Philippines, available evidence indicates that its care and control are far from optimal, including patient education. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize information in the available literature to describe the state of science of patient education for people living with diabetes in the Philippines, specific to educational needs, diabetes knowledge, and effectiveness of educational interventions. METHODS Medline, Embase, Emcare, CINAHL, Pubmed and American Psychological Association PsycInfo were searched from data inception through July 2021. Studies of any methodology (qualitative/quantitative/mixed methods), sample size, and language were eligible for inclusion. RESULTS Of 2021 initial citations, 7 studies were included, with all being quantitative in design and with a median Critical Appraisal Skills Program score of 8/12. Information needs were described by one study and related to self-care abilities. Diabetes knowledge was measured in 6 studies and improved significantly after educational interventions. Overall, studies showed that educational interventions significantly impacted self-efficacy, anthropometric measures, hemoglobin A1c levels, utilization of care and routine programme and attitudes regarding their health. CONCLUSIONS The findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive and culturally appropriate educational intervention for this population. Further research is needed to develop such intervention and assess its effectiveness to change behaviour, such as increasing physical activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is a major cause of worldwide morbidity and mortality. Diet and medication non-adherence are common among individuals with diabetes, making glycemic control difficult to attain. This study aimed to evaluate an intervention designed based on Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) to improve adherence to diet and medication among patients with type 2 diabetes in Tehran, Iran. METHODS The study was a randomized controlled trial. A total of 248 patients with type 2 diabetes who had low diet and medication adherence were randomly allocated into two intervention (n = 124) and control (n = 124) groups. Intervention group received educational intervention during three months. HAPA constructs, diet and medication adherence, and Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels were assessed at baseline, one month and six months after the intervention. Mixed Model Analysis was used to compare between and within group changes in the outcomes. RESULTS There was a statistically significant improvement in HbA1c levels after six months (7.77 ± 1.36% vs. 8.07 ± 1.52%, 95% CI, p < 0.001). Diet and medication adherence, intention, task self-efficacy, coping self-efficacy, recovery self-efficacy, action and coping planning, barriers, benefits and perceived social support were significantly improved one month and six months after the intervention (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our intervention designed based on health action process approach led to improvements in diet and medication adherence, and HbA1c among the patients within one and six months. Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous systematic reviews have found that telehealth is an effective strategy for implementing interventions to improve glycemic control and other clinical outcomes for diabetes patients. However, these reviews have not meaningfully focused on Black and Hispanic patients-partly because of the lack of adequate representation of people from racial and ethnic minority groups in clinical trials. It is unclear whether telehealth interventions are effective at improving glycemic control among Black and Hispanic patients given the disproportionate number of barriers they face accessing health care. OBJECTIVES A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized control trials that used telehealth interventions for improving glycemic control among Black and Hispanic diabetes patients. METHODS We reviewed PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and clinicalTrials.gov from inception to March 2021. We used a narrative summary approach to describe key study characteristics and graded the quality of studies using two reviewers. The pooled net change in HbA1c values was estimated across studies using a random-effects model. RESULTS We identified 10 studies that met our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis. Only one study was rated as having low bias. Telehealth interventions were primarily delivered by telephone calls, text messages, web-based portals, and virtual visits. Most interventions involved delivering diabetes self-management education. Telehealth intervention pooled across studies with a mix of Black and Hispanic participants (> 50% sample) was associated with a - 0.465 ([CI: - 0.648 to - 0.282], p = 0.000) reduction in HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest telehealth interventions are effective at improving glycemic control among Black and Hispanic diabetes patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to identify the characteristics of interventions employed to promote behavior change in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and their impact on disease self-management and glycated hemoglobin (A1c). METHODS The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to guide the protocol development for this systematic review. Randomized controlled clinical trials which compared behavior change interventions to controls in adults with T2DM and investigated disease self-management and glycated hemoglobin (A1c) measured by validated methods were eligible for this study. The risk of bias and quality of evidence was assessed respectively by Cochrane's tool and grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE). RESULTS A total of 27 studies were included involving 4464 participants. Behavior change was mainly promoted by education sessions on diabetes care delivered face-to-face, monthly, or every other month, lasting more than 60 min, involving blood glucose monitoring, healthy eating, exercise, and medication. Four studies showed significant improvement in both disease self-management and A1c. The risk of bias was classified as high in most studies. A meta-analysis could not be performed for A1c and self-management due to the high differences in intervention parameters (delivery mode, number, duration, and frequency) and self-management assessments. CONCLUSION Low evidence of improvement in disease self-management and A1c considering only validated assessment methods were found for behavior change interventions, mainly promoted by education sessions on diabetes care. The quality of studies and probably the differences in intervention protocols contributed to this finding. PROSPERO NUMBER CRD42020161162.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been a global public health issue causing in physical, financial and psychosocial crises. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) was to evaluate the Diabetes Self-Management Education or Support (DSME/S) on glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) among T2DM patients. METHODS This SRMA was made according to preferred reporting Items for systematic review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. The relevant articles were searched from four databases: Cochrane Library, MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE/PubMed and SCOPUS. Quality assessment was carried out. Pooled standard mean difference in HbA1c were calculated to obtain the effect size with random effect assumption. Subgroup analysis was conducted for assessing heterogeneity among the studies. RESULTS A total of 1312 studies were identified from databases. Among these 25 studies met inclusion criteria. From these 20 were included in the meta-analysis. In meta-analysis a pooled standard mean difference in HbA1c was -0.604 (95% confidence interval = -0.854 -0.353, I2 = 90.3, p < 0.001). In subgroup analysis a significant reduction was seen among studies with less than four months, upper middle followed by lower middle income countries (LMICs), Western Pacific (WP) followed by Middle Eastern and Northern African (MENA) regions with moderate to substantial heterogeneity. CONCLUSION However, there is paucity of studies in underdeveloped countries. Therefore, further studies validated to these contexts are needed to evaluate the DSME effectiveness. Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been a global pandemic resulting in physical, financial and psychosocial crises. Thus, it is important to investigate pooled effectiveness of Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) on glycemic control among T2DM patients. OBJECTIVE The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the association between DSME or Support (DSME/S) and glycemic control among T2DM patients. METHODS The systematic review and meta-analysis will include studies conducted throughout the world from 2010 to 2019. T2DM patients and their clinical, anthropometric, biomarkers from baseline to end line will be recorded. We will search all relevant articles from five databases namely; Cochrane Library, BioMed Central, MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), MEDLINE/PubMed and SCOPUS. Key terms will be used for questing relevant articles. Further efforts will be made to check quality of studies base on quality assessment instruments. Finally, the report will be made according Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Pooled standard mean difference in HbA1c will be used to calculate the effect size between the variables with random effects analysis assumption. Further subgroup analysis will be carried out for assessing the risk difference among groups. CONCLUSION Based on the existing and eligible researches this systematic review and meta-analysis will bring the best evidence on the effectiveness of DSME/S on glycemic control among the T2DM patients. Moreover, the subgroup analysis will inform the effectiveness heterogeneity based on continent, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) region, intervention period, World bank economic classification and glycemic markers used to follow the patients. The proposed review has been registered in the International PROSPERO website with registration number CRD42020124236.
