Phytoremediation performance of floating treatment wetlands with pelletized mine water sludge for synthetic greywater treatment

Pontederia crassipes utilization for dual phytoremediation and adsorption in greywater treatment: a techno-economic and sustainable approach

While phytoremediation has been widely employed for greywater treatment, this system suffers from the transfer of considerable amounts of surfactants to the aquatic environment through partially treated effluent and/or exhausted plant disposal. Hence, this study focuses on greywater phytoremediation followed by recycling the spent plant for preparing an adsorbent material used as post-treatment. P. crassipes was used to operate a phytoremediation unit under 23 °C, 60% relative humidity, plant density (5-30 g/L), dilution (0-50%), pH (4-10), and retention time (3-15 days). The optimum condition was 12.7 g/L density, 34.0% dilution, pH 8.4, and 13 days, giving chemical oxygen demand (COD), surfactant, and NH4-N removal efficiencies of 94.62%, 90.45%, and 88.09%, respectively. The exhausted plant was then thermally treated at 550 °C and 40 min to obtain biochar used as adsorbent to treat the phytoremediation effluent. The optimum adsorption process was biochar dosage of 1.51 g/L, pH of 2.1, and 137 min, providing a surfactant removal efficiency of 92.56%. The final discharge of this phytoremediation/adsorption combined process contained 8.30 mg/L COD, 0.23 mg/L surfactant, and 0.94 mg/L NH4+-N. Interestingly, this approach could be economically feasible with a payback period of 6.5 years, 14 USD net present value, and 8.6% internal rate of return.

Use of ornamental plants in floating treatment wetlands for greywater treatment in urban areas

Floating treatment wetlands are considered a promising and low-cost technology for the treatment of polluted water and wastewater. However, their functionality and efficiency in different types of wastewater are not fully understood. In this study, several ornamental plant species (monocultures: Canna sp., Iris sp., polyculture: Iris orientalis, Cyperus sp., Acorus gramineus) were tested in two different types of floating mats, including a media supported floating mat (MSFM) or a simple plastic grid, and evaluated for optimal removal of the studied pollutants. The results regarding pollutant removal revealed that planted systems grown in MSFM achieved significantly higher removal rates (up to 90 %) compared to the plastic grid (up to 80 %). Statistically significant higher removal rates were obtained for the planted systems compared to the unplanted systems either grown in MSFM (for turbidity (planted: 82-90 %; unplanted: 44 %), COD (planted: 74-84 %; unplanted: 32 %) and BOD5 (planted: 76-85 %; unplanted: 51 %), respectively) or grown in the plastic grid (for turbidity (planted: 64-78 %; unplanted: 44 %) and COD (planted: 43-75 %; unplanted: 32 %), respectively). During the experimental period (7 months), all plants managed to survive and withstand the weather variations. The plants in polyculture followed by Iris sp. plants in plastic grid floating mats were better adapted, as indicated by maximum quantum efficiency of PSII values and chlorophyll content index, while all the plants were considered well adapted in the MSFM. Overall, the implementation of floating treatment wetlands with ornamental vegetation for greywater treatment in urban areas seems to be a sustainable and efficient approach.

Process analysis of asymmetric interaction between copper and atrazine in a system of macrophytes

To clarify the mutual influence and inner processes between heavy-metal and pesticide pollutants, single copper and atrazine as well as binary mixtures were spiked in a system of aquatic Acorus tatarinowi Schott. The results show that: the total copper amount in roots was 23.31 and 41.46 times as much as those in leaves in single and co-contaminated copper pollution. In the solution, the copper removal reached equilibrium in 3 days. Atrazine raised plant-mediated copper removal by 20.69 % by calculating mass balance, and the increase in pH value and organic matter and the decrease of nitrate in solutions were key factors driving it. Correlation analysis demonstrated that the pH increase was mainly caused by the decline of nitrate and increases in organic matter in the solution. Hydroxyl units on the surface of organic matter in solutions provided binding sites for Cu²⁺, which was demonstrated by CO and OH peak position alterations in Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. In turn, the root contained 2.56 and 2.04 times as much as atrazine in leaves in single and co-contaminated atrazine treatments. In the solution, atrazine removal became stable after 7 days. Cu²⁺ inhibited the total accumulation of atrazine in plants by 12.5 %. Copper-induced biological phenol-like components in solution decreased the total atrazine accumulation in A. tatatinowii.

Floating treatment wetlands in domestic wastewater treatment as a decentralized sanitation alternative

Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) are technologies that have stood out for their efficiency, ease of installation and maintenance. They consist of macrophytes emerging in a floating structure that keep the plant roots in direct contact with the effluent regardless of the water flow variation over time, allowing the removal of pollutants by various processes. The application of FTWs for the treatment of domestic wastewater has the advantage of low costs in terms of removing nutrients and at the same time reducing the cost of maintenance and energy consumption when compared to the conventional centralized treatment of effluent. The lack of wastewater treatment in areas distant from urban centers is even more limited, mainly due to the high cost of tubing and pumps for the effluent to reach the treatment plants. Therefore, the objective of this study was to research FTW systems applied to the decentralized treatment of domestic wastewater. First, a bibliometric analysis was conducted comparing the main issues involving FTW, and the challenges regarding the integration of FTW and domestic wastewater treatment systems. The feasibility of the floating system as a decentralized treatment approach were discussed, as well as the removal of nutrients in domestic wastewater, which was the most covered topic by researchers who developed studies in the area. In addition, other technologies are being integrated into the phytoremediation systems seeking to improve the quality of the treated effluent and assessing the potential reuse in the homes where they are generated and treated, determining the costs and space requirements for the entire process. There is a large research gap regarding the treatment of domestic wastewater by FTW in decentralized systems, mainly in terms of operation, cost assessment and reuse Therefore, further investigations in order to better understand the performance of the process and the reactions that occur with physical, chemical and microbiological removal mechanisms are still necessary.
