The Core Elements of Strength-Based Technology Programs for Youth on the Autism Spectrum: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Evidence

Development and adaptation of a strength-based job interview training tool for transition age youth on the autism spectrum using community engaged methods

Introduction

Kessler Foundation Strength Identification and Expression (KF-STRIDE) is a strength-based job interview training tool developed for young adults on the autism spectrum. The intervention is based on a positive psychology framework to increase knowledge of character strengths, and how to relate them to a future employer. The current study sought to evaluate the acceptability, usability and feasibility of KF-STRIDE, as well as to guide adaptations to improve the tool's ability to meet the needs of those on the spectrum.

Methods

Mixed methods (post-intervention surveys, and semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders) were used to inform the evaluation and consequent adaptations of KF-STRIDE.

Results

The major findings of the study were that KF-STRIDE was found to be largely acceptable and usable. Importantly, however, our qualitative analysis revealed modifications that could help to better suit the needs of young adults on the spectrum, which included the incorporation of additional skills (i.e. etiquette, practicing hygiene) and more opportunities to practice job interviewing. Thus, we altered the implementation of the intervention to be web-based to improve accessibility. We incorporated the presence of an animated character to deliver the content, to eliminate the need for a highly trained interventionist.

Discussion

KF-STRIDE was modified to increase access by incorporating feedback from the autism community. Future directions include assessing the efficacy of KF-STRIDE in young adults on the spectrum to identify whether employment outcomes are improved after using the tool.

SPAN Website for Remote Intervention with Autistic Adolescents and Young Adults: Feasibility and Usability

Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) report less functional independence and social participation than their neurotypical peers. Remotely delivered interventions may allow autistic AYA to promote their independence, social participation, and wellbeing as they transition to adulthood. Social Participation and Navigation (SPAN) is a technology-based remotely delivered intervention initially developed for AYA with acquired brain injuries. The SPAN (website, application, and intervention manual) was modified to address the needs of AYA with autism (SPAN-ASD). This study examined the SPAN-ASD website and web application's feasibility and usability. Participants comprised 12 autistic AYA and 18 practitioners (all occupational therapists) with more than 1 year of experience in working with autistic AYA. All navigated the SPAN-ASD website and goal-management application. Practitioners completed the SPAN-ASD components and the Usefulness, Satisfaction, and Ease of Use questionnaires; AYA completed the System Usability Scale. The practitioners' average feasibility scores ranged from 4.30 to 4.68 (high); the overall usability score was 5.77 (good). The autistic AYA rated SPAN-ASD as a good, acceptable, and useful tool. Content analysis and item-level ratings indicated some needed improvements. Practitioners and autistic AYA perceived the SPAN-ASD website and application as highly feasible and usable, with excellent potential for technology-supported interventions.

The identification of exceptional skills in school-age autistic children: Prevalence, misconceptions and the alignment of informant perspectives

BACKGROUND

Although autism is commonly described in terms of deficits, many autistic individuals have been found to demonstrate exceptional skills. The shift to a strengths-based approach in the field of autism necessitates increased understanding of these skills.

AIMS

This study examined (1) rates of exceptional skills in autistic school-age children as reported by parents and teachers, (2) associations between exceptional skills, autism severity and intellectual disability and (3) correlations between parent and teacher reports of exceptional skills.

METHOD

Parents and teachers of 76 children attending autism-specific schools in Australia completed online questionnaires. Thereafter, 35 parents and teachers who identified their child as having one or more exceptional skills were interviewed by a clinical psychologist.

RESULTS

Forty parents (53%) and 16 (21%) teachers reported that their child had at least one exceptional skill (agreement between the parent and teacher reports was low; κ = .03, p = .74). In comparison, clinical psychologist assessments identified 22 children (29%) as having at least one such skill. No statistically significant relationships were identified between exceptional skills, autism severity and intellectual disability.

CONCLUSION

While different exceptional skills were identified, regardless of children's intellectual functioning or autism severity, parents and teachers varied substantially in their evaluations of these skills. Furthermore, the identified prevalence rates of exceptional skills did not always align with the rates identified in previous studies. The study findings highlight the need for definitional consensus on different types of exceptional skills, and the importance of multiple criteria/multi-instrument approaches in the identification of exceptional skills in autistic children.

Psychological strengths and well-being: Strengths use predicts quality of life, well-being and mental health in autism

LAY ABSTRACT

It is often suggested that supporting autistic people to identify and use their strengths will lead to positive outcomes. However, little research has explored if this is true. To date, no research has explored whether autistic people already have knowledge of and use their strengths, nor whether increased strengths knowledge and use is linked to good outcomes, such as a better quality of life, well-being and improved mental health. Comparing large samples of autistic and non-autistic people, this study tested these unanswered questions. We found that autistic and non-autistic people reported similar strengths, but autistic people reported less knowledge and use of their strengths compared to non-autistic people. Importantly however, autistic people who reported using their strengths often had better quality of life, well-being and mental health than autistic people who reported using their strengths less frequently. We, therefore, propose that supporting autistic people to use their strengths more often may be a valuable way to boost well-being in this population.

Realist evaluation of a transdisciplinary mealtime management service for autistic children

LAY ABSTRACT

Mealtimes and eating can be difficult for autistic children. A service where different professions work together is required to address the varied and complex mealtime difficulties of autistic children. Little is known about what is needed for such services to be effective. We interviewed six caregivers of autistic children who were engaged in a mealtime service and 10 therapists who are involved in delivering the service to understand their perspectives on the factors that were driving the effectiveness of the mealtime service. We found that different health professionals from different disciplines working together, focusing on adapting intervention to the child and family and managing expectations of the caregiver were important in contributing to outcomes of the mealtime service. The findings of this study can be used to inform the development of more effective interventions and services to support the well-being and development of autistic children.

Socially-Assistive Robots to Support Learning in Students on the Autism Spectrum: Investigating Educator Perspectives and a Pilot Trial of a Mobile Platform to Remove Barriers to Implementation

Technology offers educators tools that can tailor learning to students' learning styles and interests. Research into the use of socially-assistive robots as a learning support for children on the autism spectrum are showing promising results. However, to date, few schools have introduced these robots to support learning in students on the autism spectrum. This paper reports on a research project that investigated the barriers to implementing socially-assistive robot supported learning, and the expectations, perceived benefits and concerns of school teachers and therapists of students on the autism spectrum and adults on the autism spectrum. First, three focus groups were conducted with six adults on the autism spectrum, and 13 teachers and therapists of students from two autism-specific schools. During the focus groups, there was cautious optimism from participants about the value of socially-assistive robots for teaching support. While the data showed that participants were in favour of trialling socially-assistive robots in the classroom, they also raised several concerns and potential barriers to implementation, including the need for teacher training. In response to their concerns, the second part of the project focussed on developing a software platform and mobile application (app) to support the introduction of robots into autism-specific classrooms. The software platform and app were then trialled in two schools (n = 7 teachers and therapists). Results from focus groups indicated that participants believe socially-assistive robots could be useful for learning support, as the mobile app provides an easy to use tool to support preparing and conducting lessons that would motivate them to trial robots in the classroom.
