Abstract
BACKGROUND Stimulant-related overdoses have increased dramatically, with almost 50% of overdoses in the United States now involving stimulants. Additionally, harm-reduction approaches are increasingly seen as key to reducing the negative impact of substance use. Contingency management (CM), the provision of financial incentives for abstinence, is the most effective treatment for stimulant use disorder, but historically has not been widely implemented. Many recent, large-scale implementation efforts have relied upon foundational CM protocols that may not sufficiently account for recent increases in the prevalence and lethality of stimulant use nor the growing preference for harm reduction versus abstinence-only frameworks. ARGUMENT We argue the need to (1) consider whether and how CM protocols might be modified to address rising stimulant use and harm reduction frameworks and (2) make CM widely accessible so that it can reduce population-level stimulant use while ensuring that it is delivered with fidelity to its basic principles. Proposed changes include changing CM reinforcement schedules to emphasize treatment engagement and reductions in use in addition to abstinence, changing guidelines on the duration of and re-engagement in CM, investing in research on virtual CM, incentivizing providers and health systems to deliver CM, making it easier to purchase and use point-of-care drug screens, using direct-to-consumer marketing to increase demand for CM and adapting CM to the community in which it is being implemented. CONCLUSIONS Our proposed modifications to contingency management (CM) protocols and accessibility may more effectively address rising stimulant use and align CM more closely with harm-reduction frameworks. Given the urgent need to reduce overdose deaths, developing and testing modified CM protocols may need to rely upon methods other than randomized controlled trials. Efforts to disseminate CM widely to reduce population-level stimulant use must be balanced with the need to maintain fidelity to CM's basic principles.

Abstract
Several professional organizations and federal agencies recommend contingency management (CM) as an empirically supported treatment for drug use disorder. However, the release of the "Tolin criteria" warrants an updated recommendation. Using this methodology, five meta-analyses (84 studies, 11,000 participants) were reviewed. Two meta-analyses were rated moderate quality, and three were rated low or critically low quality. Comparator conditions included active treatment, placebo, treatment as usual, and no treatment. The primary outcome was abstinence. Considering only the moderate quality meta-analyses, the effect of CM versus control on posttreatment abstinence was d = 0.54 [0.43, 0.64] and follow-up abstinence was d=0.08 [0.00, 0.16]. A "strong" recommendation was provided for CM as an empirically supported treatment for drug use disorder.

Abstract
Behavior-environment functional relations are the units of explanation in applied behavior analysis (ABA). Whether hypothesized experimentally or descriptively, quantification of putative functional relations improves our ability to predict and influence behavior. Risk ratios are an accessible, straightforward quantitative analysis that can serve this purpose. They have been employed to great effect in other fields (e.g., medicine, public health), but are rarely used within ABA. In this tutorial, we describe risk ratios and how they are calculated, discuss why risk ratios are well suited for quantifying behavior-environment relations, and illustrate their utility and applicability across five demonstrations from real clinical cases. Recommendations for the use of risk ratios in research and practice are discussed.

Abstract
Increases in stimulant drug use (such as methamphetamine) and related deaths creates an imperative for community settings to adopt evidence-based practices to help people who use stimulants. Contingency management (CM) is a behavioral intervention with decades of research demonstrating efficacy for the treatment of stimulant use disorder, but real-world adoption has been slow, due to well-known implementation barriers, including difficulty funding reinforcers, and stigma. This paper describes the training and technical assistance (TTA) efforts and lessons learned for two state-wide stimulant-focused CM implementation projects in the Northwestern United States (Montana and Washington). A total of 154 providers from 35 community-based service sites received didactic training in CM beginning in 2021. Seventeen of these sites, ten of eleven in Montana (90.9%) and seven of 24 in Washington (29.2%), went on to implement contingency management programs adherent to their state's established CM protocol and received ongoing TTA in the form of implementation coaching calls. These findings illustrate that site-specific barriers such as logistical fit precluded implementation in more than 50% of the trained sites; however, strategies for site-specific tailoring within the required protocol aided implementation, resulting in successful CM program launch in a diverse cross-section of service sites across the states. The lessons learned add to the body of literature describing CM implementation barriers and solutions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article describes the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national implementation of contingency management within VA substance use disorder (SUD) treatment programs. METHODS The rationale for implementing CM, role of VA leadership, and training and supervision procedures are detailed. The role of the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) in sustaining the CM implementation through the donation of incentives is outlined. Updated outcomes from the primary program, CM to incentivize stimulant abstinence, are provided. Data presented were gathered from June 2011 to January 2023, from VA facilities across the country. RESULTS More than 6000 Veterans from 119 VA facilities have received CM in a 12-week program in which two urine samples are obtained per week, with 92% of the samples negative for the targeted substance. Two other CM pilot projects are described. The first incentivizes adherence to injectable medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders, with over 580 veterans from 27 VA sites participating to date. The second incentivized smoking cessation in 312 patients from four sites. A new initiative in which CM is implemented in smaller community-based VA facilities through use of onsite prize cabinets is presented and the possibility of providing CM remotely in VA is discussed. CONCLUSIONS It has proved feasible to implement abstinence CM and several other CM pilot programs at many VA facilities. Factors that contributed to the success of the VA CM rollout, challenges that were encountered along the way, and lessons learned that may facilitate wider use of CM outside VA are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The role of methamphetamine and cocaine use in California's drug poisoning (overdose) crisis has dramatically increased in the past five (5) years and has disproportionately affected American Indian, Alaska Native, and Black Californians. No FDA-approved medications currently exist for the treatment of individuals with stimulant use disorder (StimUD). Outside the Veteran's Administration, the Recovery Incentives Program: California's Contingency Management Benefit is the first large scale implementation of contingency management (CM). CM is the behavioral treatment with the most evidence and largest effect sizes for StimUD. METHODS The Program uses a CM protocol where participants can receive a maximum of $599 over a six-month period, contingent upon 36 stimulant-negative urine test results. Urine tests are conducted using a set of approved, CLIA-waived, point-of-care urine drug tests (UDTs). To ensure fidelity to the CM protocol and to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse, all aspects of incentive accounting and distribution are managed electronically via a custom-developed software system. Incentive distribution utilizes electronic gift cards. A significant innovation of the project is the conceptualization of the CM Coordinator, a designated and highly trained and supervised individual responsible for all aspects of CM operation in a specific site. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The California Department of Health Care Services contracted with UCLA to develop and implement a robust evaluation of the Program; goals include evaluating the effectiveness of real-world implementation and facilitating quality improvement. The project will likely significantly impact the use of CM for StimUD nationally and may well reduce stimulant-related drug poisoning deaths.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to test whether there are sex differences in the relationship between impulsivity and amphetamine use disorder (AMP). DESIGN A naturalistic cross-sectional design was used. SETTING The Tulsa 1000 study was held in Tulsa, OK, USA. PARTICIPANTS There were two groups in this study: AMP+ (29F, 20M) and AMP- (57F, 33M). MEASUREMENTS This project focuses on data related to impulsivity: UPPS-P impulsive behavior scale and a stop signal task (SST) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) recording. Group, sex and their interaction were compared for UPPS-P ratings and SST fMRI and behavioral responses. FINDINGS AMP+ reported higher UPPS-P positive and negative urgency scores (Ps < 0.001; r = 0.56 and 0.51) and displayed greater bilateral insula and amygdala responses across correct SST trials (Ps < 0.001, g range = 0.57-0.81) than AMP-. fMRI results indicated that AMP+ exhibited larger right anterior/middle insula, amygdala and nucleus accumbens signals during successful difficult stop trials than AMP- (Ps < 0.01; g = 0.63, 0.54 and 0.44, respectively). Crucially, two group × sex effects emerged: (a) within females, AMP+ reported larger UPPS-P lack of premeditation scores than AMP- (P < 0.001, r = 0.51), and (b) within males, AMP+ showed greater left middle insula signals than AMP- across correct SST trials (P = 0.01, g = 0.78). CONCLUSIONS Both female and male amphetamine users appear to be characterized by rash action in the presence of positive and negative mood states as well as heightened recruitment of right hemisphere regions during behavioral inhibition. In contrast, planning ahead may be particularly difficult for female amphetamine users, whereas male amphetamine users may need to recruit additional left hemisphere resources during inhibitory processing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Contingency management (CM) is an efficacious treatment for stimulant use disorders. Support materials for the clinical delivery of prize-based CM are widely accessible, but few resources are available to support design and preparation for CM implementation. This guide aims to fill that gap. METHOD/RESULTS The article outlines a suggested prize CM protocol and discusses the best practices most aligned with the evidence base and acceptable-if-necessary modifications. This guide also highlights modifications that are not evidence-based and not recommended. In addition, I discuss practical and clinical aspects of preparing for CM implementation. CONCLUSIONS Deviations from evidence-based practices are common, and poorly designed CM is unlikely to impact patient outcomes. This article provides planning stage guidance to support programs' adoption of evidence-based prize CM for the treatment of stimulant use disorders.

Abstract
The United States is currently in the fourth wave of the overdose crisis wherein stimulants together with fentanyl are the major drivers of overdose deaths. To date, there has been limited effort outside the US Veterans Administration Health System health system to disseminate evidence-based treatment for people with stimulant use disorder. Contingency management, a behavioral intervention in which positive reinforcement is provided for a target behavior indicating treatment progress, has decades of empirical support but limited implementation in real-world, non-US Veterans Administration Health System settings. The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of contingency management, the barriers to adoption, and recommendations for overcoming these barriers.

Abstract
The cigarette purchase task (CPT) is a valid behavioral-economic measure of demand that has smokers estimate hypothetical cigarette consumption under a range of escalating prices. The task involves no experimenter exposure of participants to smoking. CPT demand is measured in terms of five indices: intensity (cigarettes consumed at $0), Omax (largest expenditure), Pmax (price associated with peak expenditure), breakpoint (the first price at which consumption is 0), and elasticity (rate at which consumption changes as a function of increasing price). Out of concern for collinearity, prior studies investigated a more parsimonious CPT latent-factor structure for these derived indices consisting of two factors. The present study examined whether the same two latent-factor solutions extend to pregnant women who smoke. Six hundred sixty-five women completed the CPT as part of recruitment for a clinical trial examining the efficacy of a remote contingency-management intervention to promote smoking cessation during pregnancy. Factor analysis confirmed a two-factor solution to the CPT accounting for 87% of the variance in the five indices with demand intensity and Omax loading onto amplitude and Omax, Pmax, breakpoint, and elasticity loading onto persistence. Backward elimination regression revealed a significant negative relationship between amplitude and persistence (i.e., lower amplitude and persistence scores predicted a higher likelihood of making at least one quit attempt upon learning of pregnancy). These results further support the utility of the CPT for experimentally examining individual differences in smoking among pregnant women in an efficient and ethical manner that does not involve exposing them to cigarette smoke. Abstract
Contingency management (CM), in which financial incentives are provided upon verification of abstinence from alcohol, cigarettes, and/or illicit substances, is one of the most highly effective and empirically supported treatments for substance use disorders. However, the financial cost of implementation has been identified as a major barrier to implementation of this treatment. The purpose of this study was to develop behavioral economic purchase tasks to assess interest in CM as a function of treatment cost and perceived effectiveness of CM as a function of abstinence incentive size in alcohol drinkers. Alcohol drinkers recruited from Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) completed behavioral economic purchase tasks measuring demand for CM based on targeted abstinence intervals and treatment effectiveness and alcohol use disorder severity assessments. Nonlinear mixed-effects modeling was used to fit demand curves and assess the relationship between individual characteristics and demand metrics for CM. Results reveal that participants reported higher probability of remaining abstinent from drinking when offered larger incentives and required larger incentives when duration of abstinence required to earn the incentive was increased. Additionally, willingness to pay for treatment increased as effectiveness of treatment increased. Abstinence interval and treatment effectiveness are important features to consider when developing effective CM for widespread use, as these variables affected participants' likelihood of being abstinent and their interest in treatment. Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior research indicates rising methamphetamine use and harms in the U.S., potentially related to increases in methamphetamine injection. To date, research on trends and correlates of methamphetamine injection is limited. METHODS Analysis of trends and correlates of methamphetamine injection among treatment admissions among persons aged ≥ 12 whose primary substance of use at admission is methamphetamine. Data are from the Treatment Episode Data Set. Analyses includes descriptive statistics, trend analyses, and multilevel multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS Primary methamphetamine treatment admissions increased from 138,379 in 2010 to 201,021 in 2019. Among primary methamphetamine admissions, injection as the usual route of use increased from 24,821 (18.0 % of admissions) in 2010 to 55,951 (28.2 % of admissions) in 2019. Characteristics associated with increased adjusted odds of reporting methamphetamine injection included: males (aOR = 1.13, 95 % CI = 1.10-1.15); admission age 25-34 years (aOR = 1.23, 95 % CI = 1.19-1.28) and 35-44 years (aOR = 1.12, 95 % CI = 1.08-1.17) compared to age 18-24; dependent living (aOR = 1.33, 95 % CI = 1.29-1.37) and homelessness (aOR = 1.58, 95 % CI = 1.54-1.63) compared to independent living; part-time employment (aOR = 1.08, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.14), unemployment (aOR = 1.39, 95 % CI = 1.34-1.44) and not in labor force (aOR = 1.43, 95 % CI = 1.37-1.49) compared to full-time employment; one to ≥ four prior treatment admissions (aORs ranging from 1.19 to 1.94) compared to no prior admissions; also reporting use of cocaine (aOR = 1.10, 95 % CI = 1.05-1.16), heroin (aOR = 3.52, 95 % CI = 3.40-3.66), prescription opioids (aOR = 1.61, 95 % CI = 1.54-1.67), or benzodiazepines (aOR = 1.42, 95 % CI = 1.32-1.52) at treatment admission. CONCLUSIONS Findings lend further evidence to a resurgence of methamphetamine use that is intertwined with the ongoing opioid crisis in the U.S. Efforts to expand evidence-based prevention, treatment, and response efforts, particularly to populations at highest risk, are urgently needed.

Abstract
Background/Objective Contingency management (CM) is one of the most effective interventions for smokers with substance use disorder (SUD), and no empirical assessment of its long-term efficacy has been conducted so far in a real-world context. The objectives were: (1) examine the additive effectiveness of CM on cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for smoking cessation, and (2) examine the relationship between smoking cessation and substance use abstinence. Method A total of 80 participants (75.8% males; Mage = 45.31; SD = 9.64) were assigned to two smoking cessation treatments: CBT or CBT+CM. A set of generalized estimating equations were conducted to examine the effect of treatment condition on smoking outcomes, as well as the effect of smoking status on substance abstinence. Results Adding CM to CBT for smoking cessation improved tobacco abstinence rates at the end-of-treatment (p = .049). Tobacco abstinence rates declined over time (p = .012), but no significant effects of treatment condition were observed across follow-ups (p = .260). Smoking cessation was not significantly related to substance abstinence (p ≥ .488). Conclusions CM facilitates early abstinence in smokers with SUD, although effects subside after treatment termination. The lack of association between smoking abstinence and substance use suggests no jeopardizing effects as a result of quitting smoking.

Abstract
Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a devastating disorder, impacting both individuals and society. Individuals with CUD face many barriers in accessing treatment for CUD, and most individuals with CUD never receive treatment. In this review, we provide an overview of CUD, including risk factors for CUD, common co-occurring disorders, acute and chronic effects of cocaine use, and currently available pharmacological and behavioral treatments. There are no FDA-approved pharmacological treatments for CUD. Future studies with larger sample sizes and testing treatment combinations are warranted. However, individuals with CUD and co-occurring disorders (eg, a mood or anxiety disorder) may benefit from medication treatments. There are behavioral interventions that have demonstrated efficacy in treating CUD – contingency management (CM) and cognitive-behavioral therapy for substance use disorders (CBT-SUD) in particular – however many barriers remain in delivering these treatments to patients. Following the discussion of current treatments, we highlight some promising emerging treatments, as well as offer a framework that can be used in building a treatment plan for individuals with CUD.

Abstract
Behavior change interventions that incentivize desired behavior are highly effective for improving personal health, but difficult to maintain long term. Relapse is common and examining the mechanisms that contribute to relapse in experimental settings can identify processes relevant to substance abuse treatment. We developed a laboratory task that parallels a recent operant model of relapse after incentivized choice reported in the rodent laboratory. In two experiments, undergraduate participants first learned to make an operant response (keyboard button; R1) to earn a reinforcer consisting of an image of a preferred snack food (O1). In a second phase (Phase 2), R1 was still reinforced, but a new response (R2) was introduced and reinforced with a different reinforcer (a coin; O2). In a test phase, contingent incentives for R2 were removed (extinction) and relapse of R1 was assessed. Experiment 1 found that the O2 contingency suppressed R1 during Phase 2, and R1 relapsed rapidly in the test. Neither effect was consistently related to O2 value. Experiment 2 examined whether noncontingent presentations of O1 or O2 during the test could weaken relapse. Here, we found that noncontingent reinforcers did little to reduce or slow the increase in R1 responding. The present experiments highlight a laboratory approach to studying variables that may influence relapse after incentivized treatment. We identify and discuss areas for development to address differences between the present results and prior observations from animal and clinical studies. Abstract
Contingency management is an intervention for substance use disorders based on operant principles. The evidence base in support of contingency management is massive. It is effective in treating substance use disorder in general and opioid use disorder in particular. Dissemination has remained slow despite the urgency created by the opioid epidemic. Key barriers include a lack of expertise, time, and money. Implementing contingency management with smartphones eliminates the need for special training. It also solves logistical issues and requires little time on the part of clinicians. Thus, remaining barriers relate to cost. Federal anti-kickback regulations complicate solutions to the cost barrier. Other important regulatory challenges related to cost include the lack of billing codes and the difficulty of obtaining FDA approval for digital therapeutics. Even after the cost barrier is overcome, provider adoption is not guaranteed. Incentivizing providers for collaborative care may increase adoption and generate referrals. Recently proposed legislation and governmental policy statements provide optimism regarding the near-term large-scale adoption of contingency management in the treatment of opioid use disorder.

Abstract
This Special Issue of Preventive Medicine (PM) is the 8th in a series on behavior change, health, and health disparities. This is a topic of critical importance to improving U.S. population health. There is broad consensus that personal behavior patterns or lifestyle such as substance abuse, poor food choices, physical inactivity, and non-adherence with medical regimens are among the most important modifiable causes of chronic disease and premature death and contributors to recent decreases in U.S. longevity. While no U.S region is free of these problems, they disproportionately impact rural communities. As in prior Special Issues in this series, we devote considerable space to the ongoing U.S. opioid epidemic while also examining selected issues in rural health disparities involving tobacco use, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Across each of these topics we have recruited contributions from accomplished investigators, clinicians, and policymakers to acquaint readers with recent advances while also noting knowledge gaps and unresolved challenges.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug overdose deaths involving stimulants, including cocaine and psychostimulants with abuse potential (e.g., methamphetamine), have been increasing, partly because of co-involvement with opioids. Stimulant-involved overdose deaths have disproportionately increased among non-Hispanic Black (Black) and non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) persons; however, the role of opioids in exacerbating disproportionate stimulant-involved death rates is unclear. METHODS Analysis of National Vital Statistics System multiple cause-of-death mortality files examined age-adjusted cocaine- and psychostimulant-involved death rates. Analyses of death rates stratified by racial and ethnic group and opioid co-involvement included: 1) Joinpoint regression of 2004-2019 trends, 2) changes in rates from 2018 to 2019, and 3) demographic and geographic characteristics of 2019 deaths. RESULTS From 2004 to 2019, cocaine and psychostimulant-involved death rates were higher for Black and AI/AN persons, respectively. Among all groups, increases in cocaine-involved overdose rates were largely driven by opioid co-involvement, particularly after 2013. From 2004 to 2019, rates for psychostimulant-involved deaths increased with and without opioid co-involvement. Rates for overdoses co-involving cocaine and synthetic opioids increased from 2018 to 2019 for Hispanic, non-Hispanic White (White), and Black persons. Psychostimulant-involved overdose rates with and without synthetic opioid co-involvement increased among Hispanic, White, and Black persons. In 2019, Black and AI/AN persons continued to experience higher cocaine- and psychostimulant-involved death rates, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Stimulant-involved deaths continue to increase, and the role of opioids in driving these deaths varies by race and ethnicity. Ensuring equitable access to proven prevention and treatment interventions and incorporating social determinants of health into future research around effective pharmacotherapies may help reduce stimulant-involved overdose deaths.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Contingency management (CM) is often criticized for limited long-term impact. This meta-analysis focused on objective indices of drug use (i.e., urine toxicology) to examine the effects of CM on illicit substance use up to 1 year following treatment. METHOD Analyses included randomized trials (k = 23) of CM for stimulant, opioid, or polysubstance use disorders that reported outcomes up to 1 year after the incentive delivery had ended. Using random effects models, odds ratios (OR) were calculated for the likelihood of abstinence. Metaregressions and subgroup analyses explored how parameters of CM treatment, namely escalation, frequency, immediacy, and magnitude of reinforcers, moderated outcomes. RESULTS The overall likelihood of abstinence at the long-term follow-up among participants who received CM versus a comparison treatment (nearly half of which were community-based comprehensive therapies or protocol-based specific therapies) was OR = 1.22, 95% confidence interval [1.01, 1.44], with low to moderate heterogeneity (I² = 36.68). Among 18 moderators, longer length of active treatment was found to significantly improve long-term abstinence. CONCLUSIONS CM showed long-term benefit in reducing objective indices of drug use, above and beyond other active, evidence-based treatments (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, 12-step facilitation) and community-based intensive outpatient treatment. These data suggest that policymakers and insurers should support and cover costs for CM, which is the focus of hundreds of studies demonstrating its short-term efficacy and, now, additional data supporting its long-term efficacy. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Contingency management (CM) is efficacious for smoking cessation. To date, the number of cost-effectiveness evaluations of behavioral and pharmacological smoking cessation treatments far outnumbers the ones on CM. This study estimated 1-year efficacy and incremental cost-effectiveness of adding CM in relation to abstinence outcomes for a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)+behavioral activation (BA) treatment. METHODS The study sample comprised 120 smokers with depression (% females: 70.8%; mean age: 51.67 [SD = 9.59]) enrolled in an 8-week randomized controlled clinical trial. Clinical effectiveness variables were point-prevalence abstinence, continuous abstinence, longest duration of abstinence (LDA), and Beck-Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) scores at 1-year follow-up. Cost-effectiveness analyses were based on resource utilization, unit costs per patient, and incremental cost per additional LDA week at 1 year. RESULTS There was a significant effect of time by treatment group interaction, which indicated superior effects of CBT+BA+CM across time. Point-prevalence abstinence (53.3% [32/60]) was superior in participants receiving CBT+BA+CM compared with those in CBT+BA (23.3% [14/60]), but both groups were equally likely to present sustained reductions in depression. The average cost per patient was €208.85 (US$236.57) for CBT+BA and €410.64 (US$465.14) for CBT+BA+CM, p < .001. The incremental cost of using CM to enhance 1-year abstinence by one extra LDA week was €18 (US$20.39) (95% confidence interval: 17.75-18.25). CONCLUSIONS Behavioral treatments addressing both smoking and depression are efficacious for sustaining high quit rates at 1 year. Adding CM to CBT+BA for smoking cessation is highly cost-effective, with an estimated net benefit of €4704 (US$5344.80). IMPLICATIONS Informing on the cost-effectiveness of CM might expedite the translation of research findings into clinical practice. Findings suggested that CM is feasible and highly cost-effective, confirming that its implementation is worthwhile. At a CM cost per patient of €410.64 (US$465.14), the net benefit equals €4704 (US$5344.80), although even starting from a minimum investment of €20 (US$22.72) was cost-effective. Abstract
Human behavior plays a central role in all domains of public health. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) research and practice can contribute to public health solutions that directly address human behavior. In this paper, we describe the field of public health, identify points of interaction between public health and ABA, summarize what ABA research has already contributed, and provide several recommendations for how ABA research and practice could continue to promote public health outcomes. A clearer focus on behavior and widespread adoption of research designs and interventions informed by the ABA literature could lead to better public health outcomes. Reciprocally, better integration of public health goals and strategies into ABA research, harnessing of technology, and more collaboration would help diversify and disseminate our applied science and could yield more effective and scalable interventions to prevent and treat public health problems.

Abstract
Background: Substance use disorders (SUD) are highly prevalent among psychotic patients and are associated with poorer clinical and functional outcomes. Effective interventions for this clinical population are scarce and challenging. Contingency management (CM) is one of the most evidence-based treatments for SUD’s, however, a meta-analysis of the effect of CM in patients with a dual diagnosis of psychotic disorder and SUD has not been performed. Methods: We searched PubMed and PsycINFO databases up to December 2020. Results: Five controlled trials involving 892 patients were included. CM is effective on abstinence rates, measured by the number of self-reported days of using after intervention (95% CI −0.98 to −0.06) and by the number of negative breath or urine samples after intervention (OR 2.13; 95% CI 0.97 to 4.69) and follow-up (OR 1.47; 95% CI 1.04 to 2.08). Conclusions: Our meta-analysis shows a potential effect of CM on abstinence for patients with SUD and (severe) psychotic disorders, although the number of studies is limited. Additional longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the sustained effectivity of CM and give support for a larger clinical implementation of CM within services targeting these vulnerable co-morbid patients.

Abstract
The tendency to devalue future rewards is known as delay discounting. Discounting is measured using a series of intertemporal choices between smaller, sooner outcomes and larger, later outcomes. We used a surrogate delay discounting task to explore whether such choices would differ if a hypothetical recipient was a smoker or was an individual with good health habits. Across three studies, the descriptions of the recipient included only information about smoking status (n = 66), smoking status and equal annual income (n = 47), and smoking status and equal weekly expenditures (n = 42). Higher rates of delay discounting for the smoker recipient compared to the nonsmoker recipient were observed across all three studies. These results parallel previous findings showing group differences in discounting between actual smokers and nonsmokers. We discuss the similarities between the present results and previous studies in light of an extension of Bem's (1967) self-perception theory, which posits that choices in laboratory-based delay discounting tasks are informed by observation of real-world intertemporal choice. Abstract
Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) remains the leading cause of death among U.S. infants age 1-12 months. Extensive epidemiological evidence documents maternal prenatal cigarette smoking as a major risk factor for SUID, but leaves unclear whether quitting reduces risk. This Commentary draws attention to a report by Anderson et al. (Pediatrics. 2019, 143[4]) that represents a breakthrough on this question and uses their data on SUID risk reduction to delineate potential economic benefits. Using a five-year (2007-11) U.S. CDC Birth Cohort Linked Birth/Infant Death dataset, Anderson et al. demonstrated that compared to those who continued smoking, women who quit or reduced smoking by third trimester decreased the adjusted odds of SUID risk by 23% (95% CI, 13%-33%) and 12% (95% CI, 2%-21%), respectively. We applied these reductions to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' recommended value of a statistical life in 2020 ($10.1 million). Compared to continued smoking during pregnancy, the economic benefits per woman of quitting or reducing smoking are $4700 (95% CI $2700-$6800) and $2500 (95% CI, $400-$4300), respectively. While the U.S. obtained aggregate annual economic benefits of $0.58 (95% CI, 0.35-0.82) billion from pregnant women who quit or reduced smoking, it missed an additional $1.16 (95%CI 0.71-1.60) billion from the women who continued smoking. Delineating the health and economic impacts of decreasing smoking during pregnancy using large epidemiological studies like Anderson et al. is critically important for conducting meaningful economic analyses of the benefits-costs of developing more effective interventions for decreasing smoking during pregnancy.

Abstract
Tobacco use has unique, adverse health consequences for reproductive-aged women, particularly should these women become pregnant. Thus, successful efforts to reduce tobacco use among this population have strong potential to improve public health and reduce health disparities. The present review examines contributions to reducing tobacco use among women of childbearing age spanning the domains of tobacco regulatory science and tobacco control from the passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in 2009 through September 2019. In the domain of tobacco regulatory science, such efforts include research conducted by various National Institutes of Health/Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-supported Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science, epidemiological surveillance studies, as well as studies examining the potential impact of tobacco regulatory policies currently under consideration by the FDA (e.g., reduced nicotine content cigarettes, health warning labels). Tobacco control efforts within this same 10-year timeframe include developments in pharmacological and psychosocial approaches to promoting tobacco cessation, mHealth interventions, and tobacco control policy. Emerging issues pertinent to ongoing efforts to reduce tobacco use within the domains of both tobacco regulatory science and tobacco control are also reviewed, including e-cigarettes, comorbid health conditions, course of tobacco and other drugs of abuse, and obstacles to the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based treatment and policy. Although the past decade has seen numerous important contributions to reducing tobacco use among reproductive-aged women within both domains, existing obstacles must be surmounted to continue reducing tobacco use and protecting health among this population.
