Carbon-Coated Three-Dimensional MXene/Iron Selenide Ball with Core-Shell Structure for High-Performance Potassium-Ion Batteries

Advanced Insights on MXenes: Categories, Properties, Synthesis, and Applications in Alkali Metal Ion Batteries

The development and optimization of promising anode material for next-generation alkali metal ion batteries are significant for clean energy evolution. 2D MXenes have drawn extensive attention in electrochemical energy storage applications, due to their multiple advantages including excellent conductivity, robust mechanical properties, hydrophilicity of its functional terminations, and outstanding electrochemical storage capability. In this review, the categories, properties, and synthesis methods of MXenes are first outlined. Furthermore, the latest research and progress of MXenes and their composites in alkali metal ion storage are also summarized comprehensively. A special emphasis is placed on MXenes and their hybrids, ranging from material design and fabrication to fundamental understanding of the alkali ion storage mechanisms to battery performance optimization strategies. Lastly, the challenges and personal perspectives of the future research of MXenes and their composites for energy storage are presented.

Progress and Perspective in harnessing MXene-carbon-based composites (0-3D): Synthesis, performance, and applications

MXene is recognized as a promising catalyst for versatile applications due to its abundant metal sites, physicochemical properties, and structural formation. This comprehensive review offers an in-depth analysis of the incorporation of carbon into MXene, resulting in the formation of MXene-carbon-based composites (MCCs). Pristine MXene exhibits numerous outstanding characteristics, such as its atomically thin 2D structure, hydrophilic surface nature, metallic electrical conductivity, and substantial specific surface area. The introduction of carbon guides the assembly of MCCs through electrostatic self-assembly, pairing positively charged carbon with negatively charged MXene. These interactions result in increased interlayer spacing, reduced ion/electron transport distances, and enhanced surface hydrophilicity. Subsequent sections delve into the synthesis methods for MCCs, focusing on MXene integrated with various carbon structures, including 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D carbon. Comprehensive discussions explore the distinctive properties of MCCs and the unique advantages they offer in each application domain, emphasizing the contributions and advancements they bring to specific fields. Furthermore, this comprehensive review addresses the challenges encountered by MCCs across different applications. Through these analyses, the review promotes a deeper understanding of exceptional characteristics and potential applications of MCCs. Insights derived from this review can serve as guidance for future research and development efforts, promoting the widespread utilization of MCCs across a broad spectrum of disciplines and spurring future innovations.

Elastic MXene conductive layers and electrolyte engineering enable robust potassium storage

The precisely engineered structures of materials greatly influence the manifestation of their properties. For example, in the process of alkali metal ion storage, a carefully designed structure capable of accommodating inserted and extracted ions will improve the stability of material cycling. The present study explores the uniform distribution of self-grown carbon nanotubes to provide structural support for the conductive and elastic MXene layers of Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs. Furthermore, a compatible electrolyte system has been optimized by analyzing the solvation structure and carefully regulating the component in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Mechanistic studies demonstrate that the decomposition predominantly controlled by FSI- leads to the formation of a robust inorganic SEI layer enriched with KF, thus effectively inhibiting irreversible side reactions and major structural deterioration. Confirming our expectations, Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs exhibits an impressive reversible capacity of 260 mA h g-1, even after 2000 cycles at 500 mA g-1 in 1 M KFSI (DME), surpassing most MXene-based anodes reported for PIBs. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations verify the superior electronic conductivity and lower K+ diffusion energy barriers of the novel superstructure of Ti3C2Tx-Co@NCNTs, thereby affirming the improved electrochemical kinetics. This study presents systematic evaluation methodologies for future research on MXene-based anodes in PIBs.

Synthesis of Iron Sulfide Nanocrystals Encapsulated in Highly Porous Carbon-Coated CNT Microsphere as Anode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Highly porous carbon materials with a rationally designed pore structure can be utilized as reservoirs for metal or nonmetal components. The use of small-sized metal or metal compound nanoparticles, completely encapsulated by carbon materials, has attracted significant attention as an effective approach to enhancing sodium ion storage properties. These materials have the ability to mitigate structural collapse caused by volume expansion during the charging process, enable short ion transport length, and prevent polysulfide elution. In this study, a concept of highly porous carbon-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) porous microspheres, which serve as excellent reservoir materials is suggested and a porous microsphere is developed by encapsulating iron sulfide nanocrystals within the highly porous carbon-coated CNTs using a sulfidation process. Furthermore, various sulfidation processes to determine the optimal method for achieving complete encapsulation are investigated by comparing the morphologies of diverse iron sulfide-carbon composites. The fully encapsulated structure, combined with the porous carbon, provides ample space to accommodate the significant volume changes during cycling. As a result, the porous iron sulfide-carbon-CNT composite microspheres exhibited outstanding cycling stability (293 mA h g-1 over 600 cycles at 1 A g-1 ) and remarkable rate capability (100 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 ).

Built-In Electric Field-Driven Ultrahigh-Rate K-Ion Storage via Heterostructure Engineering of Dual Tellurides Integrated with Ti3C2Tx MXene

Exploiting high-rate anode materials with fast K+ diffusion is intriguing for the development of advanced potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) but remains unrealized. Here, heterostructure engineering is proposed to construct the dual transition metal tellurides (CoTe2/ZnTe), which are anchored onto two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets. Various theoretical modeling and experimental findings reveal that heterostructure engineering can regulate the electronic structures of CoTe2/ZnTe interfaces, improving K+ diffusion and adsorption. In addition, the different work functions between CoTe2/ZnTe induce a robust built-in electric field at the CoTe2/ZnTe interface, providing a strong driving force to facilitate charge transport. Moreover, the conductive and elastic Ti3C2Tx can effectively promote electrode conductivity and alleviate the volume change of CoTe2/ZnTe heterostructures upon cycling. Owing to these merits, the resulting CoTe2/ZnTe/Ti3C2Tx (CZT) exhibit excellent rate capability (137.0 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1) and cycling stability (175.3 mAh g-1 after 4000 cycles at 3.0 A g-1, with a high capacity retention of 89.4%). More impressively, the CZT-based full cells demonstrate high energy density (220.2 Wh kg-1) and power density (837.2 W kg-1). This work provides a general and effective strategy by integrating heterostructure engineering and 2D material nanocompositing for designing advanced high-rate anode materials for next-generation KIBs.

Near Room-Temperature Intrinsic Exchange Bias in an Fe Intercalated ZrSe2 Spin Glass

Some magnetic systems display a shift in the center of their magnetic hysteresis loop away from zero field, a phenomenon termed exchange bias. Despite the extensive use of the exchange bias effect, particularly in magnetic multilayers, for the design of spin-based memory/electronics devices, a comprehensive mechanistic understanding of this effect remains a longstanding problem. Recent work has shown that disorder-induced spin frustration might play a key role in exchange bias, suggesting new materials design approaches for spin-based electronic devices that harness this effect. Here, we design a spin glass with strong spin frustration induced by magnetic disorder by exploiting the distinctive structure of Fe intercalated ZrSe2, where Fe(II) centers are shown to occupy both octahedral and tetrahedral interstitial sites and to distribute between ZrSe2 layers without long-range structural order. Notably, we observe behavior consistent with a magnetically frustrated and multidegenerate ground state in these Fe0.17ZrSe2 single crystals, which persists above room temperature. Moreover, this magnetic frustration leads to a robust and tunable exchange bias up to 250 K. These results not only offer important insights into the effects of magnetic disorder and frustration in magnetic materials generally, but also highlight as design strategy the idea that a large exchange bias can arise from an inhomogeneous microscopic environment without discernible long-range magnetic order. In addition, these results show that intercalated TMDs like Fe0.17ZrSe2 hold potential for spintronic technologies that can achieve room temperature applications.

MXene Derivatives for Energy Storage and Conversions

Associated with the rapid development of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes), MXene derivatives have been recently exploited and exhibited unique physical/chemical properties, holding promising applications in the areas of energy storage and conversions. This review provides a comprehensive summarization of the latest research and progress on MXene derivatives, including termination-tailored MXenes, single-atom implanted MXenes, intercalated MXenes, van der Waals atomic layers, and non-van der Waals heterostructures. The intrinsic relationship between structure, properties, and corresponding applications for MXene derivatives are then emphasized. Finally, the essential challenges are addressed and perspectives for the MXene derivatives are also discussed.

Achieving Stable and Ultrafast Potassium Storage of Antimony Anode via Dual Confinement of MXene@Carbon Framework

Antimony-based anode materials are recognized for their high potassium storage capacities and appropriate operating potentials. However, the large volume expansion of Sb during the potassiation/depotassiation process, which results in a quick capacity decay, severely limits its practical application in potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Here, a carbon-coated Sb/MXene heterostructure composite (CSM) is synthesized by adsorption of Sb3+ on MXene nanosheets via Sb-O-Ti bonds followed by carbothermic reduction to construct dual-confined MXene@carbon conductive framework capable of withstanding high volume expansion of Sb and conducive to enabling accelerated electron transfer kinetics. The CSM composite, particularly CSM-700, when configured as an anode for PIBs, realized high capacity (484.4 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 ), an ultra-stable cycling performance with a high reversible capacity of 435.9 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles corresponding to a capacity retention rate of 90.0%, and superior rate performance of 323.0 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 . The proposed strategy offers a simple route to construct high-performance Sb-based anodes for advanced PIBs.

MXene-Based Nanocomposites for Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Energy Harvesting Applications

Due to its superior advantages in terms of electronegativity, metallic conductivity, mechanical flexibility, customizable surface chemistry, etc., 2D MXenes for nanogenerators have demonstrated significant progress. In order to push scientific design strategies for the practical application of nanogenerators from the viewpoints of the basic aspect and recent advancements, this systematic review covers the most recent developments of MXenes for nanogenerators in its first section. In the second section, the importance of renewable energy and an introduction to nanogenerators, major classifications, and their working principles are discussed. At the end of this section, various materials used for energy harvesting and frequent combos of MXene with other active materials are described in detail together with the essential framework of nanogenerators. In the third, fourth, and fifth sections, the materials used for nanogenerators, MXene synthesis along with its properties, and MXene nanocomposites with polymeric materials are discussed in detail with the recent progress and challenges for their use in nanogenerator applications. In the sixth section, a thorough discussion of the design strategies and internal improvement mechanisms of MXenes and the composite materials for nanogenerators with 3D printing technologies are presented. Finally, we summarize the key points discussed throughout this review and discuss some thoughts on potential approaches for nanocomposite materials based on MXenes that could be used in nanogenerators for better performance.

An ultrastable sodium-ion battery anode enabled by carbon-coated porous NaTi2(PO4)3 olive-like nanospheres

NaTi₂(PO₄)₃ (NTP) is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It has drawn wide attention because of its stable three-dimensional NASICON-type structure, proper redox potential, and large accommodation space for Na⁺. However, the inherent low electronic conductivity of the phosphate framework reduces its charge transfer kinetics, thus limiting its exploitation. Therefore, this paper proposes a material with carbon-coated porous NTP olive-like nanospheres (p-NTP@C) to tackle the issues above. Based on experimental data and theoretical calculations, the porous structure of the material is found to be able to provide more active sites and shorten the Na⁺ diffusion distance. In addition, the carbon coating can effectively improve the electron and Na⁺ diffusion kinetics. As the anode material for SIBs, the p-NTP@C olive-like nanospheres exhibit a high reversible capacity (127.3 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 C) and ultrastable cycling performance (84.8% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 5 C). Furthermore, the sodium-ion full cells, composed of p-NTP@C anode and Na₃V₂(PO₄)₂F₃@carbon cathode, also deliver excellent performance (75.7% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1 C). In brief, this nanostructure design provides a viable approach for the future development of long-life and highly stable NASICON-type anode materials.

Confined WS2 Nanosheets Tubular Nanohybrid as High-Kinetic and Durable Anode for Sodium-Based Dual Ion Batteries

Sodium based dual-ion battery (SDIB) has been regarded as one of the promising batteries technologies thanks to its high working voltage and natural abundance of sodium source, its practical application yet faces critical issues of low capacity and sluggish kinetics of intercalation-type graphite anode. Here, a tubular nanohybrid composed of building blocks of carbon-film wrapped WS₂ nanosheets on carbon nanotube (WS₂ /C@CNTs) was reported. The expanded (002) interlayer and dual-carbon confined structure endowed WS₂ nanosheets with fast charge transportation and excellent structural stability, and thus WS₂ /C@CNTs showed highly attractive electrochemical properties for Na⁺ storage with high reversible capacity, fast kinetic, and robust durability. The full sodium-based dual ion batteries by coupling WS₂ /C@CNTs anode with graphite cathode full cell presented a high reversible capacity (210 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1 ), and excellent rate performance with a high capacity of 137 mAh g^-1 at 5.0 A g^-1 .

From 1D Nanofibers to 3D Nanofibrous Aerogels: A Marvellous Evolution of Electrospun SiO2 Nanofibers for Emerging Applications

One-dimensional (1D) SiO₂ nanofibers (SNFs), one of the most popular inorganic nanomaterials, have aroused widespread attention because of their excellent chemical stability, as well as unique optical and thermal characteristics. Electrospinning is a straightforward and versatile method to prepare 1D SNFs with programmable structures, manageable dimensions, and modifiable properties, which hold great potential in many cutting-edge applications including aerospace, nanodevice, and energy. In this review, substantial advances in the structural design, controllable synthesis, and multifunctional applications of electrospun SNFs are highlighted. We begin with a brief introduction to the fundamental principles, available raw materials, and typical apparatus of electrospun SNFs. We then discuss the strategies for preparing SNFs with diverse structures in detail, especially stressing the newly emerging three-dimensional SiO₂ nanofibrous aerogels. We continue with focus on major breakthroughs about brittleness-to-flexibility transition of SNFs and the means to achieve their mechanical reinforcement. In addition, we showcase recent applications enabled by electrospun SNFs, with particular emphasis on physical protection, health care and water treatment. In the end, we summarize this review and provide some perspectives on the future development direction of electrospun SNFs.

Two-Dimensional Core-Shell Structure of Cobalt-Doped@MnO2 Nanosheets Grown on Nickel Foam as a Binder-Free Battery-Type Electrode for Supercapacitor Application

Herein, we present an interfacial engineering strategy to construct an efficient hydrothermal approach by in situ growing cobalt-doped@MnO₂ nanocomposite on highly conductive nickel foam (Ni foam) for supercapacitors (SCs). The remarkably high specific surface area of Co dopant provides a larger contacting area for MnO₂. In the meantime, the excellent retentions of the hierarchical phase-based pore architecture of the cobalt-doped surface could beneficially condense the electron transportation pathways. In addition, the nickel foam (Ni foam) nanosheets provide charge-transport channels that lead to the outstanding improved electrochemical activities of cobalt-doped@MnO₂. The unique cobalt-doped@MnO₂ nanocomposite electrode facilitates stable electrochemical architecture, multi-active electrochemical sites, and rapid electro-transports channels; which act as a key factor in enhancing the specific capacitances, stability, and rate capacities. As a result, the cobalt-doped@MnO₂ nanocomposite electrode delivered superior electrochemical activities with a specific capacitance of 337.8 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1; this is greater than pristine MnO₂ (277.9 F g^-1). The results demonstrate a worthy approach for the designing of high-performance SCs by the grouping of the nanostructured dopant material and metal oxides.

Reversible Oxygen-Rich Functional Groups Grafted 3D Honeycomb-Like Carbon Anode for Super-Long Potassium Ion Batteries

Studies have found that oxygen-rich-containing functional groups in carbon-based materials can be used as active sites for the storage performance of K⁺, but the basic storage mechanism is still unclear. Herein, we construct and optimize 3D honeycomb-like carbon grafted with plentiful COOH/C = O functional groups (OFGC) as anodes for potassium ion batteries. The OFGC electrode with steady structure and rich functional groups can effectively contribute to the capacity enhancement and the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film, achieving a high reversible capacity of 230 mAh g^-1 at 3000 mA g^-1 after 10,000 cycles (almost no capacity decay) and an ultra-long cycle time over 18 months at 100 mA g^-1. The study results revealed the reversible storage mechanism between K⁺ and COOH/C = O functional groups by forming C-O-K compounds. Meanwhile, the in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy proved the highly reversible and rapid de/intercalation kinetics of K⁺ in the OFGC electrode, and the growth process of SEI films. In particular, the full cells assembled by Prussian blue cathode exhibit a high energy density of 113 Wh kg^-1 after 800 cycles (calculated by the total mass of anode and cathode), and get the light-emitting diodes lamp and ear thermometer running.

Template-Free Preparation of α-Ni(OH)2 Nanosphere as High-Performance Electrode Material for Advanced Supercapacitor

Although it is one of the promising candidates for pseudocapacitance materials, Ni(OH)₂ is confronted with poor specific capacitance and inferior cycling stability. The design and construction of three-dimensional (3D) nanosphere structures turns out to be a valid strategy to combat these disadvantages and has attracted tremendous attention. In this paper, a 3D α-Ni(OH)₂ nanosphere is prepared via a facile and template-free dynamic refluxing approach. Significantly, the α-Ni(OH)₂ nanosphere possesses a high specific surface area (119.4 m²/g) and an abundant porous structure. In addition, the as-obtained α-Ni(OH)₂ electrodes are investigated by electrochemical measurements, which exhibit a high specific capacitance of 1243 F/g at 1 A/g in 6 M KOH electrolyte and an acceptable capacitive retention of 40.0% after 1500 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A/g, which can be attributed to the sphere’s unique nanostructure. Furthermore, the as-assembled Ni(OH)₂-36//AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) yields a remarkable energy density of 26.50 Wh/kg, with a power density of 0.82 kW/kg. Notably, two ASCs in series can light a 2.5 V red lamp sustainably for more than 60 min, as well as power an LED band with a rated power of 25 W. Hence, this 3D α-Ni(OH)₂ nanosphere may raise great potential applications for next-generation energy storage devices.

Static and Dynamic Biomaterial Engineering for Cell Modulation

In the biological microenvironment, cells are surrounded by an extracellular matrix (ECM), with which they dynamically interact during various biological processes. Specifically, the physical and chemical properties of the ECM work cooperatively to influence the behavior and fate of cells directly and indirectly, which invokes various physiological responses in the body. Hence, efficient strategies to modulate cellular responses for a specific purpose have become important for various scientific fields such as biology, pharmacy, and medicine. Among many approaches, the utilization of biomaterials has been studied the most because they can be meticulously engineered to mimic cellular modulatory behavior. For such careful engineering, studies on physical modulation (e.g., ECM topography, stiffness, and wettability) and chemical manipulation (e.g., composition and soluble and surface biosignals) have been actively conducted. At present, the scope of research is being shifted from static (considering only the initial environment and the effects of each element) to biomimetic dynamic (including the concepts of time and gradient) modulation in both physical and chemical manipulations. This review provides an overall perspective on how the static and dynamic biomaterials are actively engineered to modulate targeted cellular responses while highlighting the importance and advance from static modulation to biomimetic dynamic modulation for biomedical applications.

Heterostructure Fe2O3 nanorods@imine-based covalent organic framework for long cycling and high-rate lithium storage

Fe₂O₃ as an anode for lithium-ion batteries has attracted intense attention because of its high theoretical capacity, natural abundance, and good safety. However, the inferior cycling stability, low-rate performance, and limited composite varieties hinder the application of Fe₂O₃-based materials. In this work, an Fe₂O₃@COF-LZU1 (FO@LZU1) anode was prepared via an imine-based covalent organic framework (COF-LZU1) covering on the exterior surface of Fe₂O₃ after rational optimization. With its unique heterostructure, the COF-LZU1 layer not only effectively alleviated the volume expansion during cycling but also improved the charge-transfer capability because of the π-conjugated system. Moreover, the organic functional group (CN, benzene ring) for COF-LZU1 provided more redox-active sites for Li⁺ storage. Under the contributions of both Fe₂O₃ nanorods and COF-LZU1, the FO@LZU1_50% exhibited an ultrahigh initial capacity and long-term cycling performance with initial discharge capacities of 2143 and 2171 mA h g^-1 after 300 cycles under 0.1 A g^-1, and rate performance of 1310 and 501 mA h g^-1 at 0.3 and 3 A g^-1, respectively. In addition, a high retention capacity of 1185 mA h g^-1 was achieved at 1 A g^-1 after 500 cycles. Furthermore, a full-cell with the FO@LZU1_50% anode and LiCoO₂ cathode exhibited superior cycling and rate performance, which still maintained a reversible capacity of 260 mA h g^-1 after 200 cycles even at a current density of 1 A g^-1. The proposed strategy offers a new perspective for exploring the high-rate capability and designability of Fe₂O₃-based electrode materials.
