Facet Engineering of Advanced Electrocatalysts Toward Hydrogen/Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Synergistic Assistance of Ir Clusters and NiCo2O4 Nanosheets Interfaces in Direct O-O Coupling for High-Efficiency Alkaline Oxygen Evolution

Adopting noble metals on non-noble metals is an effective strategy to balance the cost and activity of electrocatalysts. Herein, a thorough analysis of the synergistic OER is conducted at the heterogeneous interface formed by Ir clusters and NiCo2O4 based on DFT calculations. Specifically, the electrons spontaneously bring an eg occupancy of interfacial Ir close to unity after the absorbed O, providing more transferable electrons for the conversion of the absorbed O-intermediates. Besides, the diffuse distribution of electrons in the Ir 5d orbital fills the antibonding orbital after O is absorbed, avoiding the desorption difficulties caused by the stronger Ir-O bonds. The electrons transfer from Ir to Co atoms at the heterogeneous interface and fill the Co 3d band near the Fermi level, stimulating the interfacial Co to participate in the direct O-O coupling (DOOC) pathway. Experimentally, the ultrathin-modulated NiCo2O4 nanosheets are used to support Ir clusters (Ircluster-E-NiCo2O4) by the electrodeposition method. The as-synthesized Ircluster-E-NiCo2O4 catalyst achieves a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an ultralow overpotential of 238 mV and works steadily for 100 h under a high current of 100 mA cm-2, benefiting from the efficient DOOC pathway during the OER.

Next-Generation Green Hydrogen: Progress and Perspective from Electricity, Catalyst to Electrolyte in Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Green hydrogen from electrolysis of water has attracted widespread attention as a renewable power source. Among several hydrogen production methods, it has become the most promising technology. However, there is no large-scale renewable hydrogen production system currently that can compete with conventional fossil fuel hydrogen production. Renewable energy electrocatalytic water splitting is an ideal production technology with environmental cleanliness protection and good hydrogen purity, which meet the requirements of future development. This review summarizes and introduces the current status of hydrogen production by water splitting from three aspects: electricity, catalyst and electrolyte. In particular, the present situation and the latest progress of the key sources of power, catalytic materials and electrolyzers for electrocatalytic water splitting are introduced. Finally, the problems of hydrogen generation from electrolytic water splitting and directions of next-generation green hydrogen in the future are discussed and outlooked. It is expected that this review will have an important impact on the field of hydrogen production from water.

Correlating Thickness and Phase of Single Co(OH)2 Micro-Platelets to the Intrinsic Activity of Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Morphology, crystal phase, and its transformation are important structures that frequently determine electrocatalytic activity, but the correlations of intrinsic activity with them are not completely understood. Herein, using Co(OH)2 micro-platelets with well-defined structures (phase, thickness, area, and volume) as model electrocatalysts of oxygen evolution reaction, multiple in situ microscopy is combined to correlate the electrocatalytic activity with morphology, phase, and its transformation. Single-entity morphology and electrochemistry characterized by atomic force microscopy and scanning electrochemical cell microscopy reveal a thickness-dependent turnover frequency (TOF) of α-Co(OH)2. The TOF (≈9.5 s-1) of α-Co(OH)2 with ≈14 nm thickness is ≈95-fold higher than that (≈0.1 s-1) with ≈80 nm. Moreover, this thickness-dependent activity has a critical thickness of ≈30 nm, above which no thickness-dependence is observed. Contrarily, β-Co(OH)2 reveals a lower TOF (≈0.1 s-1) having no significant correlation with thickness. Combining single-entity electrochemistry with in situ Raman microspectroscopy, this thickness-dependent activity is explained by more reversible Co3+/Co2+ kinetics and larger ratio of active Co sites of thinner α-Co(OH)2, accompanied with faster phase transformation and more extensive surface restructuration. The findings highlight the interactions among thickness, ratio of active sites, kinetics of active sites, and phase transformation, and offer new insights into structure-activity relationships at single-entity level.

Ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles-decorated nickel/nickel oxide three phase heterojunctions to boost alkaline hydrogen evolution

The rational design and optimization of heterogeneous interface for low loading noble metal HER eletrocatalysts to facilitate the upscaling of alkaline water/seawater electrolysis is highly challenging. Herein, we present a facile deep corrosion strategy induced by NaBH4 to precisely construct an ultrasmall Ru nanoparticle-decorated Ni/NiO hybrid (r-Ru-Ni/NiO) with highly dispersed triple-phase heterostructures. Remarkably, it exhibits superior activity with only 53 mV and 70 mV at 100 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline water and seawater, respectively, surpassing the performance of Pt/C (109.7 mV, 100 mA cm-2, 1 M KOH). It is attributed to collaborative optimization of electroactive interfaces between well-distributed ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles and Ni/NiO hybrid. Moreover, the assembled r-Ru-Ni/NiO system just require 2.03 V at 1000 mA cm-2 in anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer, outperforming a RuO2/NF || Pt/C system, while exhibiting outstanding stability at high current densities. This study offers a logical design for accurate construction of interfacial engineering, showing promise for large-scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting.

Recent Trends and Perspectives in Single-Entity Electrochemistry: A Review with Focus on a Water Splitting Reaction

Electrochemical measurements involving single nanoparticles have attracted considerable research attention. In recent years, various studies have been conducted on single-entity electrochemistry (SEE) for the in-depth analyses of catalytic reactions. Although, several electrocatalysts have been developed for H2 energy production, designing innovative electrocatalysts for this purpose remains a challenging task. Stochastic collision electrochemistry is gaining increased attention because it has led to new findings in the SEE field. Importantly, it facilitates establishing structure activity relationships for electrocatalysts by monitoring transient signals. This article reviews the recent achievements related to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) using different electrocatalysts at the nanoscale level. In particular, it discusses the electrocatalytic activities of noble metal nanoparticles, including Ag, Au, Pt, and Pd nanoparticles, at the single-particle level. Because heterogeneity is a key factor affecting the catalytic activity of nanostructures, our work focuses on the influence of heterogeneities in catalytic materials on the OER and HER activities. These results may help to achieve a better understanding of the fundamental processes involved in the water splitting reaction.

CoO supported NiFe layered double hydroxide sandwich-like nanosheets on hierarchical carbon framework for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Exploration of greatly efficient and steady non-noble oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great significance in improving the overall efficiency of energy density systems such as regenerative fuel cells, water electrolyzes, and metal-air batteries. Herein, inspired by hierarchical 3D porous structures with open microchannels of natural wood, CoO@NiFe LDH sandwich-like nanosheets were anchored on the carbonized wood (CW) via electrodeposition and calcination strategies. The strong interactions between CoO nanosheets and NiFe LDH nanosheets endow CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst with high catalytic properties toward the OER comparable to CoO/CW and NiFe LDH/CW. The optimized CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst demonstrates good OER catalytic performance with an overpotential of 230 mV at 100 mA cm-2. This work presents an innovative approach to utilize renewable resources for constructing advanced free-standing catalysts.

Activating Inert Crystal Face via Facet-Dependent Quench-Engineering for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Developing a facile strategy to activate the inert crystal face of an electrocatalyst is critical to full-facet utilization, yet still challenging. Herein, the electrocatalytic activity of the inert crystal face is activated by quenching Co3O4 cubes and hexagonal plates with different crystal faces in Fe(NO3)3 solution, and the regulation mechanism of facet-dependent quench-engineering is further revealed. Compared to the Co3O4 cube with exposed {100} facet, the Co3O4 hexagonal plate with exposed {111} facet is more responsive to quenching, accompanied by a rougher surface, richer defect, and more Fe doping. Theoretical calculations indicate that the {111} facet has a more open structure with lower defect formation energy and Fe doping energy, ensuring its electronic and coordination structure is easier to optimize. Therefore, quench-engineering largely increases the catalytic activity of {111) facet for oxygen evolution reaction by 13.2% (the overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 decreases from 380 to 330 mV), while {100} facet only increases by 7.6% (from 393 to 363 mV). The quenched Co3O4 hexagonal plate exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability in both zinc-air battery and water-splitting. The work reveals the influence mechanism of crystal face on quench-engineering and inspires the activation of the inert crystal face.

Advancing Catalysts by Stacking Fault Defects for Enhanced Hydrogen Production: A Review

Green hydrogen, derived from water splitting powered by renewable energy such as solar and wind energy, provides a zero-emission solution crucial for revolutionizing hydrogen production and decarbonizing industries. Catalysts, particularly those utilizing defect engineering involving the strategical introduction of atomic-level imperfections, play a vital role in reducing energy requirements and enabling a more sustainable transition toward a hydrogen-based economy. Stacking fault (SF) defects play an important role in enhancing the electrocatalytic processes by reshaping surface reactivity, increasing active sites, improving reactants/product diffusion, and regulating electronic structure due to their dense generation ability and profound impact on catalyst properties. This review explores SF in metal-based materials, covering synthetic methods for the intentional introduction of SF and their applications in hydrogen production, including oxygen evolution reaction, photo- and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, and various other electrocatalytic processes such as oxygen reduction reaction, nitrate reduction reaction, and carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Finally, this review addresses the challenges associated with SF-based catalysts, emphasizing the importance of a detailed understanding of the properties of SF-based catalysts to optimize their electrocatalytic performance. It provides a comprehensive overview of their various applications in electrocatalytic processes, providing valuable insights for advancing sustainable energy technologies.

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Clean Energy Conversion: Recent Advances in Unlocking its Underlying Mechanisms

Carbon neutrality is an important goal for humanity . As an eco-friendly technology, electrocatalytic clean energy conversion technology has emerged in the 21st century. Currently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysis, including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), are the mainstream energy catalytic reactions, which are driven by electrocatalysis. In this paper, the current advanced characterizations for the analyses of MOF-based electrocatalytic energy reactions have been described in details, such as density function theory (DFT), machine learning, operando/in situ characterization, which provide in-depth analyses of the reaction mechanisms related to the above reactions reported in the past years. The practical applications that have been developed for some of the responses that are of application values, such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water splitting have also been demonstrated. This paper aims to maximize the potential of MOF-based electrocatalysts in the field of energy catalysis, and to shed light on the development of current intense energy situations.

Facet-Dependent Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity of IrO2 from Quantum Mechanics and Experiments

The diversity of chemical environments present on unique crystallographic facets can drive dramatic differences in catalytic activity and the reaction mechanism. By coupling experimental investigations of five different IrO2 facets and theory, we characterize the detailed elemental steps of the surface redox processes and the rate-limiting processes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The predicted complex evolution of surface adsorbates and the associated charge transfer as a function of applied potential matches well with the distinct redox features observed experimentally for the five facets. Our microkinetic model from grand canonical quantum mechanics (GC-QM) calculations demonstrates mechanistic differences between nucleophilic attack and O-O coupling across facets, providing the rates as a function of applied potential. These GC-QM calculations explain the higher OER activity observed on the (100), (001), and (110) facets and the lower activity observed for the (101) and (111) facets. This combined study with theory and experiment brings new insights into the structural features that either promote or hinder the OER activity of IrO2, which are expected to provide parallels in structural effects on other oxide surfaces.

In situ self-reconstructed hierarchical bimetallic oxyhydroxide nanosheets of metallic sulfides for high-efficiency electrochemical water splitting

The advancement of economically efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline water oxidation based on transition metals is essential for hydrogen production through water electrolysis. In this investigation, a straightforward one-step solvent method was utilized to spontaneously cultivate bimetallic sulfide S-FeCo1 : 1/NIF on the surface of a nickel-iron foam (NIF). Capitalizing on the synergistic impact between the bimetallic constituents and the highly active species formed through electrochemical restructuring, S-FeCo1 : 1/NIF exhibited remarkable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, requiring only a 310 mV overpotential based on 500 mA cm-2 current density. Furthermore, it exhibited stable operation at 200 mA cm-2 for 275 h. Simultaneously, the catalyst demonstrated excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and overall water-splitting capabilities. It only requires an overpotential of 191 mV and a potential of 1.81 V to drive current densities of 100 and 50 mA cm-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also employed to validate the impact of the bimetallic synergistic effect on the catalytic activity of sulfides. The results indicate that the coupling between bimetallic components effectively reduces the energy barrier required for the rate-determining step in water oxidation, enhancing the stability and activity of bimetallic sulfides. The exploration of bimetallic coupling to improve the OER performance holds theoretical significance in the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.

Precise Anchoring of Fe Sites by Regulating Crystallinity of Novel Binuclear Ni-MOF for Revealing Mechanism of Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Bimetallic metal-organic framework (BMOF) exhibits better electrocatalytic performance than mono-MOF, but deciphering the precise anchoring of foreign atoms and revealing the underlying mechanisms at the atomic level remains a major challenge. Herein, a novel binuclear NiFe-MOF with precise anchoring of Fe sites is synthesized. The low-crystallinity (LC)-NiFe0.33 -MOF exhibited abundant unsaturated active sites and demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. It achieved an ultralow overpotential of 230 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1 . Using a combination of modulating crystallinity, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, the accurate metal sequence of BMOF and the synergistic effect of the active sites are identified, revealing that the adjacent active site plays a significant role in regulating the catalytic performance of the endmost active site. The proposed model of BMOF electrocatalysts facilitates the investigation of efficient OER electrocatalysts and the related catalytic mechanisms.

Current Status and Perspectives of Dual-Atom Catalysts Towards Sustainable Energy Utilization

The exploration of sustainable energy utilization requires the implementation of advanced electrochemical devices for efficient energy conversion and storage, which are enabled by the usage of cost-effective, high-performance electrocatalysts. Currently, heterogeneous atomically dispersed catalysts are considered as potential candidates for a wide range of applications. Compared to conventional catalysts, atomically dispersed metal atoms in carbon-based catalysts have more unsaturated coordination sites, quantum size effect, and strong metal-support interactions, resulting in exceptional catalytic activity. Of these, dual-atomic catalysts (DACs) have attracted extensive attention due to the additional synergistic effect between two adjacent metal atoms. DACs have the advantages of full active site exposure, high selectivity, theoretical 100% atom utilization, and the ability to break the scaling relationship of adsorption free energy on active sites. In this review, we summarize recent research advancement of DACs, which includes (1) the comprehensive understanding of the synergy between atomic pairs; (2) the synthesis of DACs; (3) characterization methods, especially aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron spectroscopy; and (4) electrochemical energy-related applications. The last part focuses on great potential for the electrochemical catalysis of energy-related small molecules, such as oxygen reduction reaction, CO2 reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and N2 reduction reaction. The future research challenges and opportunities are also raised in prospective section.

Self-supporting hierarchical Co3O4-nanowires@NiO-nanosheets core-shell nanostructure on carbon foam to form efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Designing cost-effective and robust bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desired in hydrogen production from overall water splitting, but still suffers great challenges due to the sluggish catalytic OER/HER kinetics. In this paper, a surface/defect engineering strategy is developed to synthesize three-dimensional (3D) carbon foam (CF)-supported unique hierarchical Co3O4 nanowires@NiO nanosheets core-shell nanostructured catalyst (NiO@Co3O4/CF) with rich oxygen-vacancies as a novel bifunctional catalyst for alkaline water splitting electrolysis. Benefited from the synergy of the 3D hierarchical core-shell structure and rich oxygen vacancies, the as-obtained NiO@Co3O4/CF shows both excellent OER (η200 = 325 mV, η500 = 374 mV) and HER (η10 = 104 mV) activities with low Tafel slopes (64.26 mV dec-1 for OER and 109.14 mV dec-1 for HER, respectively) and outstanding stability. A simple overall water splitting electrolysis cell assembled by this bifunctional NiO@Co3O4/CF as both OER and HER catalysts requires only a cell voltage of 1.53 V to obtain the current density of 10 mA cm-2 and displays a long-term stability. This work has successfully developed an approach for rational design and novel synthesis of metal oxide hybrids as bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for overall water splitting.

Bifunctional CoxP-FeP@C for overall water splitting realized by manipulating the electronic states of Co via phosphorization

The electronic properties and structural characteristics of transition metal materials have a significant impact on their electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, precisely controlling the electronic states of core metals and fabricating catalysts with advanced structures are conducive to facilitating electrolysis process. Herein, we manipulate the electronic properties of the electroactive sites of catalysts by controlling the degree of phosphorization during the phosphorization process. The CoxP-FeP@C electrocatalysts, characterized by their sea-urchin morphology, were synthesized by subjecting CoFc-metal organic framework (MOF) precursors to phosphorization for specific time intervals. The optimized Co2P-FeP@C-5 electrocatalyst showed the optimum performance towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic efficiency with 239 mV overpotential and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with 169 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA·cm-2 in 1.0 M KOH (PH = 13.8). For comparison, the extended duration of phosphorization resulted in the formation of CoP-FeP@C-15 and CoP-FeP@C-30 electrocatalysts, which exhibited compromised electrocatalytic performance due to the transformation of the electroactive core Co2P to CoP during subsequent phosphorization processes. The improved interfacial properties between Co2P and FeP play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of water decomposition, attributed to the higher density of states (DOS) at the Fermi Level and the increased availability of electroactive sites for the adsorption of intermediates and electrolysis. These findings are substantiated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This approach offers a highly effective means of manipulating the electronic properties of the electroactive transition metal core by controlling the degree of phosphorization, with the ultimate goal of achieving efficient water splitting.

Enhanced Electron Delocalization within Coherent Nano-Heterocrystal Ensembles for Optimizing Polysulfide Conversion in High-Energy-Density Li-S Batteries

Commercialization of high energy density Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries is impeded by challenges such as polysulfide shuttling, sluggish reaction kinetics, and limited Li+ transport. Herein, a jigsaw-inspired catalyst design strategy that involves in situ assembly of coherent nano-heterocrystal ensembles (CNEs) to stabilize high-activity crystal facets, enhance electron delocalization, and reduce associated energy barriers is proposed. On the catalyst surface, the stabilized high-activity facets induce polysulfide aggregation. Simultaneously, the surrounded surface facets with enhanced activity promote Li2 S deposition and Li+ diffusion, synergistically facilitating continuous and efficient sulfur redox. Experimental and DFT computations results reveal that the dual-component hetero-facet design alters the coordination of Nb atoms, enabling the redistribution of 3D orbital electrons at the Nb center and promoting d-p hybridization with sulfur. The CNE, based on energy level gradient and lattice matching, endows maximum electron transfer to catalysts and establishes smooth pathways for ion diffusion. Encouragingly, the NbN-NbC-based pouch battery delivers a Weight energy density of 357 Wh kg-1 , thereby demonstrating the practical application value of CNEs. This work unveils a novel paradigm for designing high-performance catalysts, which has the potential to shape future research on electrocatalysts for energy storage applications.

Design of iron oxyhydroxide nanosheets coated on Co species embedded in nanoporous carbon for oxygen evolution reaction

There is still a tremendous challenge in designing environmentally friendly oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts that are inexpensive and high-performing for practical applications. Herein, the self-sacrificing template zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) was pyrolyzed under N2 atmosphere to generate Co species embedded in nanoporous carbon (Co-NC). Then, iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) was wrapped onto the Co-NC surface via electrodeposition to shape the Co-NC@FeOOH composites. Benefiting from the core-shell structure, high conductivity, and distributed active sites, Co-NC@FeOOH presents distinguished OER performance with a low overpotential (336 mV) at 10 mA cm-2 and small Tafel slope (49.46 mV dec-1). This work furnishes a rosy passage for receiving cost-effective electrocatalysts with high efficiency for OER.

The in situ phosphorization inducing oxygen vacancies in the core-shell structured NiFe oxides boosts the electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction

Transition metal-based oxides have been reported as an important family of electrocatalysts for water splitting owing to their possible large-scale applications that are highly desirable for the hydrogen generation industry. Herein, we report a facile method for the preparation of phosphate-decorated NiFe oxides on nickel foam as efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts for water oxidation. The OER electrocatalysts were developed through the pyrolysis of MIL(Fe) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which were modified with Ni and P species. It was found that the formation of NiO on the Fe2O3 surface (NiO@Fe2O3) can enrich electrocatalytic active sites for the OER. Meanwhile, the incorporation of P into NiO@Fe2O3 (Px-NiO@Fe2O3) creates abundant oxygen vacancies, which facilitates the surface charge transfer for OER electrocatalysis. Benefiting from the structure and composition advantages, P2.0-NiO@Fe2O3/NF exhibits the best performance for OER electrocatalysis among other prepared electrocatalysts, with an overpotential of 208 mV at the OER current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 69.64 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH solution. Additionally, P2.0-NiO@Fe2O3/NF shows an outstanding durability for the OER electrocatalysis, maintaining the OER current density above 20 mA cm-2 for more than 100 h.

Internal Polarization Field Induced Hydroxyl Spillover Effect for Industrial Water Splitting Electrolyzers

The formation of multiple oxygen intermediates supporting efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are affinitive with hydroxyl adsorption. However, ability of the catalyst to capture hydroxyl and maintain the continuous supply at active sits remains a tremendous challenge. Herein, an affordable Ni2P/FeP2 heterostructure is presented to form the internal polarization field (IPF), arising hydroxyl spillover (HOSo) during OER. Facilitated by IPF, the oriented HOSo from FeP2 to Ni2P can activate the Ni site with a new hydroxyl transmission channel and build the optimized reaction path of oxygen intermediates for lower adsorption energy, boosting the OER activity (242 mV vs. RHE at 100 mA cm-2) for least 100 h. More interestingly, for the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) with low concentration electrolyte, the advantage of HOSo effect is significantly amplified, delivering 1 A cm-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.88 V with excellent stability for over 50 h.

Nanoparticle Exsolution on Perovskite Oxides: Insights into Mechanism, Characteristics and Novel Strategies

Supported nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention as a promising catalyst for achieving unique properties in numerous applications, including fuel cells, chemical conversion, and batteries. Nanocatalysts demonstrate high activity by expanding the number of active sites, but they also intensify deactivation issues, such as agglomeration and poisoning, simultaneously. Exsolution for bottom-up synthesis of supported nanoparticles has emerged as a breakthrough technique to overcome limitations associated with conventional nanomaterials. Nanoparticles are uniformly exsolved from perovskite oxide supports and socketed into the oxide support by a one-step reduction process. Their uniformity and stability, resulting from the socketed structure, play a crucial role in the development of novel nanocatalysts. Recently, tremendous research efforts have been dedicated to further controlling exsolution particles. To effectively address exsolution at a more precise level, understanding the underlying mechanism is essential. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the exsolution mechanism, with a focus on its driving force, processes, properties, and synergetic strategies, as well as new pathways for optimizing nanocatalysts in diverse applications.

Recent Advances in Co-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Water splitting is a promising technique in the sustainable "green hydrogen" generation to meet energy demands of modern society. Its industrial application is heavily dependent on the development of novel catalysts with high performance and low cost for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). As a typical non-precious metal, cobalt-based catalysts have gained tremendous attention in recent years and shown a great prospect of commercialization. However, the complexity of the composition and structure of newly-developed Co-based catalysts make it urgent to comprehensively retrospect and summarize their advance and design strategies. Hence, in this review, the reaction mechanism of HER is first introduced and the possible role of the Co component during electrocatalysis is discussed. Then, various design strategies that could effectively enhance the intrinsic activity are summarized, including surface vacancy engineering, heteroatom doping, phase engineering, facet regulation, heterostructure construction, and the support effect. The recent progress of the advanced Co-based HER electrocatalysts is discussed, emphasizing that the application of the above design strategies can significantly improve performance by regulating the electronic structure and optimizing the binding energy to the crucial intermediates. At last, the prospects and challenges of Co-based catalysts are shown according to the viewpoint from fundamental explorations to industrial applications.

Designing Oxide Catalysts for Oxygen Electrocatalysis: Insights from Mechanism to Application

The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are fundamental processes in a range of energy conversion devices such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. ORR and OER both have significant activation barriers, which severely limit the overall performance of energy conversion devices that utilize ORR/OER. Meanwhile, ORR is another very important electrochemical reaction involving oxygen that has been widely investigated. ORR occurs in aqueous solutions via two pathways: the direct 4-electron reduction or 2-electron reduction pathways from O2 to water (H2O) or from O2 to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Noble metal electrocatalysts are often used to catalyze OER and ORR, despite the fact that noble metal electrocatalysts have certain intrinsic limitations, such as low storage. Thus, it is urgent to develop more active and stable low-cost electrocatalysts, especially for severe environments (e.g., acidic media). Theoretically, an ideal oxygen electrocatalyst should provide adequate binding to oxygen species. Transition metals not belonging to the platinum group metal-based oxides are a low-cost substance that could give a d orbital for oxygen species binding. As a result, transition metal oxides are regarded as a substitute for typical precious metal oxygen electrocatalysts. However, the development of oxide catalysts for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions still faces significant challenges, e.g., catalytic activity, stability, cost, and reaction mechanism. We discuss the fundamental principles underlying the design of oxide catalysts, including the influence of crystal structure, and electronic structure on their performance. We also discuss the challenges associated with developing oxide catalysts and the potential strategies to overcome these challenges.

Vertical 3D Nanostructures Boost Efficient Hydrogen Production Coupled with Glycerol Oxidation Under Alkaline Conditions

Hydrogen production from electrolytic water is an important sustainable technology to realize renewable energy conversion and carbon neutrality. However, it is limited by the high overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode. To reduce the operating voltage of electrolyzer, herein thermodynamically favorable glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) is proposed to replace the OER. Moreover, vertical NiO flakes and NiMoNH nanopillars are developed to boost the reaction kinetics of anodic GOR and cathodic hydrogen evolution, respectively. Meanwhile, excluding the explosion risk of mixed H2/O2, a cheap organic membrane is used to replace the expensive anion exchange membrane in the electrolyzer. Impressively, the electrolyzer delivers a remarkable reduction of operation voltage by 280 mV, and exhibits good long-term stability. This work provides a new paradigm of hydrogen production with low cost and good feasibility.

Immobilization of Oxyanions on the Reconstructed Heterostructure Evolved from a Bimetallic Oxysulfide for the Promotion of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Efficient and durable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) requires the electrocatalyst to bear abundant active sites, optimized electronic structure as well as robust component and mechanical stability. Herein, a bimetallic lanthanum-nickel oxysulfide with rich oxygen vacancies based on the La2O2S prototype is fabricated as a binder-free precatalyst for alkaline OER. The combination of advanced in situ and ex situ characterizations with theoretical calculation uncovers the synergistic effect among La, Ni, O, and S species during OER, which assures the adsorption and stabilization of the oxyanion [Formula: see text] onto the surface of the deeply reconstructed porous heterostructure composed of confining NiOOH nanodomains by La(OH)3 barrier. Such coupling, confinement, porosity and immobilization enable notable improvement in active site accessibility, phase stability, mass diffusion capability and the intrinsic Gibbs free energy of oxygen-containing intermediates. The optimized electrocatalyst delivers exceptional alkaline OER activity and durability, outperforming most of the Ni-based benchmark OER electrocatalysts.

The Morphologically Controlled Synthesis and Application of Mesoporous Alumina Spheres

The control of alumina morphology is crucial yet challenging for its various applications. Unfortunately, traditional methods for preparing alumina particles suffer from several limitations such as irregular morphology, poor dispersibility, and restricted application areas. In this study, we develop a novel method for preparing spherical mesoporous alumina using chitin and Pluronic P123 as mixed templates. The effects of reaction temperature, time, and the addition of mixed templates on the phase structure, micromorphology, and optical absorption properties of the samples were investigated. The experimental results indicate that lower temperature and shorter reaction time facilitated the formation of spherical mesoporous alumina with excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. The periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that both the (110) and (100) surfaces of γ-Al2O3 can strongly adsorb CO2. The difference in the amount of CO2 adsorbed by Al2O3 is mainly due to the different surface areas, which give different numbers of exposed active sites. This approach introduces a novel strategy for utilizing biological compounds to synthesize spherical alumina and greatly enhances mesoporous alumina's application efficiency in adsorption fields. Moreover, this study explored the electrochemical performance of the synthesized product using cyclic voltammetry, and improved loading of electrocatalysts and enhanced electrocatalytic activity were discovered.

Understanding oxygen evolution mechanisms by tracking charge flow at the atomic level

Current classifications of oxygen evolution catalysts are based on energy levels of the clean catalysts. It is generally asserted that a LOM-catalyst can only follow LOM chemistry in each electron transfer step and that there can be no mixing between AEM and LOM steps without an external trigger. We use ab initio theory to track the charge flow of the water-on-catalyst system and show that the position of water orbitals is pivotal in determining whether an electron transfer step is water dominated oxidation (WDO), lattice-oxygen dominated oxidation (LoDO), or metal dominated oxidation (MDO). Microscopic photo-catalytic pathways of TiO₂ (110), a material whose lattice oxygen bands lie above the metal bands, show that viable OER pathways follow either all AEM steps or mixed AEM-LOM steps. The results provide a correct description of redox chemistries at the atomic level and advance our understanding of how water-splitting catalysts produce desorbed oxygen.

Tuning Active Metal Atomic Spacing by Filling of Light Atoms and Resulting Reversed Hydrogen Adsorption-Distance Relationship for Efficient Catalysis

Precisely tuning the spacing of the active centers on the atomic scale is of great significance to improve the catalytic activity and deepen the understanding of the catalytic mechanism, but still remains a challenge. Here, we develop a strategy to dilute catalytically active metal interatomic spacing (dM-M) with light atoms and discover the unusual adsorption patterns. For example, by elevating the content of boron as interstitial atoms, the atomic spacing of osmium (dOs-Os) gradually increases from 2.73 to 2.96 Å. More importantly, we find that, with the increase in dOs-Os, the hydrogen adsorption-distance relationship is reversed via downshifting d-band states, which breaks the traditional cognition, thereby optimizing the H adsorption and H2O dissociation on the electrode surface during the catalytic process; this finally leads to a nearly linear increase in hydrogen evolution reaction activity. Namely, the maximum dOs-Os of 2.96 Å presents the optimal HER activity (8 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) in alkaline media as well as suppressed O adsorption and thus promoted stability. It is believed that this novel atomic-level distance modulation strategy of catalytic sites and the reversed hydrogen adsorption-distance relationship can shew new insights for optimal design of highly efficient catalysts.

Quasi-Three-Dimensional Cyclotriphosphazene-Based Covalent Organic Framework Nanosheet for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

Metal-free carbon-based materials are considered as promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts for clean energy conversion, and their highly dense and exposed carbon active sites are crucial for efficient ORR. In this work, two unique quasi-three-dimensional cyclotriphosphazene-based covalent organic frameworks (Q3CTP-COFs) and their nanosheets were successfully synthesized and applied as ORR electrocatalysts. The abundant electrophilic structure in Q3CTP-COFs induces a high density of carbon active sites, and the unique bilayer stacking of [6 + 3] imine-linked backbone facilitates the exposure of active carbon sites and accelerates mass diffusion during ORR. In particular, bulk Q3CTP-COFs can be easily exfoliated into thin COF nanosheets (NSs) due to the weak interlayer π-π interactions. Q3CTP-COF NSs exhibit highly efficient ORR catalytic activity (half-wave potential of 0.72 V vs. RHE in alkaline electrolyte), which is one of the best COF-based ORR electrocatalysts reported so far. Furthermore, Q3CTP-COF NSs can serve as a promising cathode for Zn-air batteries (delivered power density of 156 mW cm-2 at 300 mA cm-2). This judicious design and accurate synthesis of such COFs with highly dense and exposed active sites and their nanosheets will promote the development of metal-free carbon-based electrocatalysts.

Atomically Dispersed Dual-Metal Sites Showing Unique Reactivity and Dynamism for Electrocatalysis

The real structure and in situ evolution of catalysts under working conditions are of paramount importance, especially for bifunctional electrocatalysis. Here, we report asymmetric structural evolution and dynamic hydrogen-bonding promotion mechanism of an atomically dispersed electrocatalyst. Pyrolysis of Co/Ni-doped MAF-4/ZIF-8 yielded nitrogen-doped porous carbons functionalized by atomically dispersed Co-Ni dual-metal sites with an unprecedented N8V4 structure, which can serve as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. More importantly, the electrocatalyst showed remarkable activation behavior due to the in situ oxidation of the carbon substrate to form C-OH groups. Density functional theory calculations suggested that the flexible C-OH groups can form reversible hydrogen bonds with the oxygen evolution reaction intermediates, giving a bridge between elementary reactions to break the conventional scaling relationship.
