Combined bactericidal process of lignin and silver in a hybrid nanoparticle on E. coli

Natural lignin nanoparticles target tumor by saturating the phagocytic capacity of Kupffer cells in the liver

Ligand-receptor recognition serves as the fundamental driving force for active targeting, yet it is still constrained by off-target effects. Herein, we demonstrate that circumventing or blocking the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) are both viable strategies to address off-target effects. Naturally derived lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) show great potential to block MPS due to its good stability, low toxicity, and degradability. We further demonstrate the impact of LNPs dosage on in vivo tumor targeting and antitumor efficacy. Our results show that a high dose of LNPs (300 mg/kg) leads to significant accumulation at the tumor site for a duration of 14 days after intravenous administration. In contrast, the low-dose counterparts (e.g., 50, 150 mg/kg) result in almost all LNPs accumulating in the liver. This discovery indicates that the liver is the primary site of LNP capture, leaving only the surplus LNPs the chance to reach the tumor. In addition, although cell membrane-engineered LNPs can rapidly penetrate tumors, they are still prone to capture by the liver during subsequent circulation in the bloodstream. Excitingly, comparable therapeutic efficacy is obtained for the above two strategies. Our findings may offer valuable insights into the targeted delivery of drugs for disease treatment.

Synthesis of high-performance antibacterial agent based on incorporated vancomycin into MOF-modified lignin nanocomposites

The alarming rise in antibiotic resistance necessitates urgent action, particularly against the backdrop of resistant bacteria evolving to render conventional antibiotics less effective, leading to an increase in morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Vancomycin-loaded Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) nanocomposites have emerged as a promising strategy in enhancing the eradication of pathogenic bacteria. This study introduces lignin as a novel synergistic agent in Vancomycin-loaded MOF (Lig-Van-MOF), which substantially enhances the antibacterial activity against drug-resistant bacteria. Lig-Van-MOF exhibits six-fold lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) than free vancomycin and Van-MOF with a much higher antibacterial potential against sensitive and resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Remarkably, it reduces biofilms of these strains by over 85 % in minimal biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC). Utilization of lignin to modify surface properties of MOFs improves their adhesion to bacterial membranes and boosts the local concentration of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) via unique synergistic mechanism. Additionally, lignin induces substantial cell deformation in treated bacterial cells. It confirms the superior bactericidal properties of Lig-Van-MOF against Staphylococcus species, underlining its significant potential as a bionanomaterial designed to combat antibiotic resistance effectively. This research paves the way for novel antibacterial platforms that optimize cost-efficiency and broaden microbial resistance management applications.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles-capped aminated lignin as a robust active catalyst for dye discoloration

Considering the severity of global environmental issues, biomass-derived products have received significant attention as alternatives to foster sustainability and eco-friendliness. The use of metal nanoparticle catalysts for dye decomposition is emerging as a promising approach for environmentally friendly dye removal. In this study, an aminosilane-modified lignin (AML)/silver nanoparticle (AgNP) composite was fabricated and used as a hydrogenation catalyst. The AgNPs were well dispersed on the AML surface and formed strong bonds within the AML/AgNP complex. AML also served as an effective reducing and capping agent for Ag(I) ions. The AML/AgNPs were found to be an efficient catalyst with excellent dye degradation ability and easy reusability. Biomass-derived lignin can be used as a reducing and capping agent for metals and this complex can be used as a high-value bio-catalyst for wastewater remediation.

Cellulose-derived raw materials towards advanced functional transparent papers

Pulp and paper are gradually transforming from a traditional industry into a new green strategic industry. In parallel, cellulose-derived transparent paper is gaining ground for the development of advanced functional materials for light management with eco-friendly, high performance, and multifunctionality. This review focuses on methods and processes for the preparation of cellulose-derived transparent papers, highlighting the characterization of raw materials linked to responses to different properties, such as optical and mechanical properties. The applications in electronic devices, energy conversion and storage, and eco-friendly packaging are also highlighted with the objective to showcase the untapped potential of cellulose-derived transparent paper, challenging the prevailing notion that paper is merely a daily life product. Finally, the challenges and propose future directions for the development of cellulose-derived transparent paper are identified.

Carbon-based single-atom catalysts derived from biomass: Fabrication and application

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with active metals dispersed atomically have shown great potential in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high atomic utilization and superior selectivity/stability. Synthesis of SACs using carbon-neutral biomass and its components as the feedstocks provides a promising strategy to realize the sustainable and cost-effective SACs preparation as well as the valorization of underused biomass resources. Herein, we begin by describing the general background and status quo of carbon-based SACs derived from biomass. A detailed enumeration of the common biomass feedstocks (e.g., lignin, cellulose, chitosan, etc.) for the SACs preparation is then offered. The interactions between metal atoms and biomass-derived carbon carriers are summarized to give general rules on how to stabilize the atomic metal centers and rationalize porous carbon structures. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of catalysts in diverse domains (e.g., chemocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, etc.) is comprehensively introduced. The structure-property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms are also addressed, including the influences of metal sites on the activity and stability, and the impact of the unique structure of single-atom centers modulated by metal/biomass feedstocks interactions on catalytic activity and selectivity. Finally, we end this review with a look into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of biomass-based SACs. We expect to shed some light on the forthcoming research of carbon-based SACs derived from biomass, manifestly stimulating the development in this emerging research area.

Solvent-Induced Lignin Conformation Changes Affect Synthesis and Antibacterial Performance of Silver Nanoparticle

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria necessitates the development of novel, sustainable, and biocompatible antibacterial agents. This study addresses cytotoxicity and environmental concerns associated with traditional silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by exploring lignin, a readily available and renewable biopolymer, as a platform for AgNPs. We present a novel one-pot synthesis method for lignin-based AgNPs (AgNPs@AL) nanocomposites, achieving rapid synthesis within 5 min. This method utilizes various organic solvents, demonstrating remarkable adaptability to a wide range of lignin-dissolving systems. Characterization reveals uniform AgNP size distribution and morphology influenced by the chosen solvent. This adaptability suggests the potential for incorporating lignin-loaded antibacterial drugs alongside AgNPs, enabling combined therapy in a single nanocomposite. Antibacterial assays demonstrate exceptional efficacy against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with gamma-valerolactone (GVL)-assisted synthesized AgNPs exhibiting the most potent effect. Mechanistic studies suggest a combination of factors contributes to the antibacterial activity, including direct membrane damage caused by AgNPs and sustained silver ion release, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. This work presents a straightforward, adaptable, and rapid approach for synthesizing biocompatible AgNPs@AL nanocomposites with outstanding antibacterial activity. These findings offer a promising and sustainable alternative to traditional antibiotics, contributing to the fight against antibiotic resistance while minimizing environmental impact.

Synthesis and Characterization of Lignin-Silver Nanoparticles

Metal nanoparticle synthesis via environmentally friendly methods is gaining interest for their potential advantages over conventional physico-chemical approaches. Herein, we propose a robust green synthesis route for lignin-modified silver nanoparticles, utilizing the recovery of lignin as a renewable raw material and exploring its application in valuable areas. Through a systematic approach combining UV-Vis spectroscopy with AAS and DLS, we identified repeatable and scalable reaction conditions in an aqueous solution at pH 11 for homogeneous silver nanoparticles with high uniformity. The TEM median sizes ranged from 12 to 15 nm with circularity between 0.985 and 0.993. The silver nanoparticles yield exceeded 0.010 mol L-1, comparable with traditional physico-chemical methods, with a minimal loss of silver precursor ranging between 0.5 and 3.9%. Characterization by XRD and XPS revealed the presence of Ag-O bonding involving lignin functional groups on the pure face-centered cubic structure of metallic silver. Moreover, the lignin-modified silver nanoparticles generated a localized thermal effect upon near-infrared laser irradiation (808 nm), potentially allowing for targeted applications in the biomedical field. Our study showcases the potential of lignin as a renewable reducing and capping agent for silver nanoparticle synthesis, addressing some shortcomings of green synthesis approaches and contributing to the development of suitable nanomaterials.

Enhancing the anti-biofouling property of solar evaporator through the synergistic antibacterial effect of lignin and nano silver

Solar desalination is an effective solution to address the global water scarcity issue. However, biofouling poses a significant challenge for solar evaporators due to the presence of bacteria in seawater. In this study, an anti-biofouling evaporator was constructed using the synergistic antibacterial effect of lignin and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The AgNPs were easily synthesized using lignin as reductant under mild reaction conditions. Subsequently, the Lignin-AgNPs solution was integrated into polyacrylamide hydrogel (PAAm) without any purification steps, resulting in the formation of Lignin/AgNPs-PAAm (LAg-PAAm). Under the combined action of AgNPs and the hydroquinone groups present in oxidized lignin, LAg-PAAm achieved over 99 % disinfection efficiency within 1 h, effectively preventing biofilm formation in pore channels of solar evaporators. The anti-biofouling solar evaporator demonstrated an evaporation rate of 1.85 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation, and maintained stable performance for >30 days due to its high efficient bactericidal effect. Furthermore, it also exhibited exceptional salt-rejection capability attributed to its superior hydrophilicity.

Rapid antibiotic screening based on E. coli apoptosis using a potentiometric sensor array

Phenotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing enables reliable antibiotic screening but requires multiple strategies to identify each phenotypic change induced by different bactericidal mechanisms. Bacteria apoptosis with typical phenotypic features has never been explored for antibiotic screening. Herein, we developed an antibiotic screening method based on the measurement of antibiotic-induced phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure of apoptotic bacteria. Phosphatidylserine externalization of E. coli that can be widely used as an apoptosis marker for antibiotics with different antibacterial mechanisms was explored. A positively charged PS-binding peptide was immobilized on magnetic beads (MBs) to recognize and capture apoptotic E. coli with PS externalization. Apoptotic E. coli binding led to the charge or charge density change of MBs-peptide, resulting in a potential change on a magneto-controlled polymeric membrane potentiometric sensor. Based on the detection of apoptotic E. coli killed by antibiotics, antibiotic screening for different classes of antibiotics and silver nanoparticles was achieved within 1.5 h using a potentiometric sensor array. This approach enables sensitive, general, and time-saving antibiotic screening, and may open up a new path for antibiotic susceptibility testing.

Modified acid polysaccharide derived from Salvia przewalskii with excellent wound healing and enhanced bioactivity

Acid polysaccharide was extracted from Salvia przewalskii root powders (PSP), purified by diethylaminoethyl cellulose column (DEAE-52) and molecular sieve (PSP2). PSPm1 was obtained by modifying PSP2 with nitrite and phosphoric acid. The chemical structure of PSP2 and PSPm1 exhibited notable distinctions, primarily due to the absence of arabinose and promotion of glucuronic acid (GlcA). The structure of PSPm1 was deduced through the utilization of 1H, 13C, and 2-D NMR. The main chain was linked by α-D-Galp(1 → 3)-α-Glcp-(1 → fragments and →6)-β-D-Galp fragments, with the presence of →4)-α-D-GlcpA-(1 → 6)-β-D-Galp-(1 → ， → 4)-α-D-GalAp-(1 → 2,4)-α-D-Rhap-(1 → fragments and →6)-α-Glcp-(1 → 2,4)-β-D-Manp-(1 → fragments. PSPm1 exhibited different immunoregulatory bioactivity in vitro, including haemostatic effects indicated by activated clotting time of 55.5 % reduction by the activated clotting time (ACT) test and wound healing function in vivo. PSPm1 also displayed better anti-tumor biological effects than unmodified. The structure-activity dissimilarity between PSP2 and PSPm1 primarily stems from variations in molecular weight (Mw), monosaccharide composition, and branching patterns. The modification of polysaccharides from the extract residues of Chinese medicinal materials may be a new form of drug supplements.

A Lignin Silver Nanoparticles/Polyvinyl Alcohol/Sodium Alginate Hybrid Hydrogel with Potent Mechanical Properties and Antibacterial Activity

Antibacterial hydrogels have attracted significant attention due to their diverse applications, efficient antimicrobial properties, and adaptability to various environments and requirements. However, their relatively fragile structure, coupled with the potential for environmental toxicity when exposed to their surroundings for extended periods, may significantly limit their practical application potential. In this work, a composite hydrogel was synthesized with outstanding mechanical features and antibacterial capability. The hydrogel was developed through the combination of the eco-friendly and enduring antibacterial agent, lignin silver nanoparticles (Lig-Ag NPs), with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA), in varying proportions. The successful synthesis of the hydrogel and the dispersed distribution of Lig-Ag NPs within the hydrogel were confirmed by various analytical techniques, including field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The formation of multiple hydrogen bonds between Lig-Ag NPs and the composites contributed to a more stable and dense network structure of the hydrogel, consequently enhancing its mechanical properties. Rheological tests revealed that the hydrogel exhibited an elastic response and demonstrated outstanding self-recovery properties. Significantly, the antibacterial hydrogel demonstrated effectiveness against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), achieving a <5% survival of bacteria within 12 h. This study presented a green and straightforward synthetic strategy for the application of antibacterial composite hydrogels in various fields.

Core-shell structured lignin-stabilized silver nanoprisms for colorimetric detection of sulfur ions

Widespread occurrence of sulfides in domestic and industrial wastewater contributes to environmental pollution and poses risks to human health. Therefore, the development of highly selective, sensitive, and rapid sulfur ion (S2-) detection probes in aquatic ecosystems is of paramount importance. In this study, lignin-stabilized silver nanoprisms (EHL@AgNPRs) were prepared using the seed growth and self-assembly methods. Based on this, a novel, high-performance, and environmentally friendly S2- colorimetric detection method was proposed. Lignin is believed to coat the surface of AgNPRs through cation-π and electrostatic interactions, acting as an excellent dispersant and stabilizer to prevent aggregation and shape deformation. This allows AgNPRs to maintain localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics and superior colorimetric sensing sensitivity towards S2- even after 30 d. The EHL@AgNPRs exhibited remarkable selectivity towards S2- with a minimum detection limit of 41.3 nM. The conjugation of lignin with AgNPRs offers a highly promising approach for the rapid detection of S2- in natural aquatic environments and for the valorization of lignin.

Lignin - A green material for antibacterial application - A review

Lignin's antibacterial properties have become increasingly relevant due to the rise of microbial infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance. Lignin is capable of interacting electrostatically with bacteria and contains polyphenols that cause damage to their cell walls. These features make lignin a desirable material to exhibit antibacterial behavior. Therefore, lignin in antibacterial applications offers a novel approach to address the growing need for sustainable and effective antibacterial materials. Recent research has explored the incorporation of lignin in various biomedical applications, such as wound dressings, implants, and drug delivery systems, highlighting their potential as a sustainable alternative to synthetic antibacterial agents. Furthermore, the development of lignin-based nanomaterials with enhanced antimicrobial activity is an active area of research that holds great promise for the future. In this review, we have provided a summary of how lignin can be incorporated into different forms, such as composite and non-composite synthesis of antibacterial agents and their performances. The challenges and future considerations are also discussed in this review article.

Comparison of the Interaction and Structure of Lignin in Pure Systems and in Asphalt Media by Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Lignin is a class of organic aromatic polymers contributing to the rigidity and strength of plants and has been proposed as a modifier to improve asphalt performance on road pavement. However, contradicting experimental results on the lignin miscibility in asphalt were found from different studies, and lignin has been found to self-assemble in different solutions. Thus, investigating the interaction and microstructure of lignin in asphalt media in molecular detail is necessary. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using both the LAMMPS program with the OPLS-aa force field and the NAMD program with the CHARMM force field have been conducted on pure lignin (including lignin monomer, dimer, and polymer with 17 and 31 units) and their mixtures with model asphalt molecules at different temperatures. Consistent results were observed from both programs and force fields in terms of density, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficient, radius of gyration, and radial distribution function. Glass transition was observed in the pure lignin systems based on density and diffusion coefficient calculations at different temperatures. Lignin can form intramolecular hydrogen bonds and intermolecular hydrogen bonds with other lignin and 1,7-dimethylnapthalene in the asphalt mixture, which has dependence on temperature and lignin chain length. Correlating the lignin size and chain length using the power-law relationship showed that lignin polymers in pure systems are in quasi-relaxed structures at different temperatures; lignin molecules stay in quasi-relaxed structures in asphalt mixtures at high temperatures but in collapsed structures at low temperatures. Implementing lignin monomer, dimer, and polymer into the model asphalt mixture can improve its density. Although lignin in different chain lengths aggregates in asphalt, lignin can modify the packing between different components in asphalt media at different temperatures. The work suggests that temperature can significantly influence the miscibility of lignin polymer in asphalt and that lignin can function as both a modifier and a resin in asphalt.

Custom-designed polyphenol lignin for the enhancement of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based wood adhesive

Adhesives are used extensively in the wood industry. As resource and environmental issues become increasingly severe, the development of green and sustainable biomass-based adhesives has attracted increasing attention. In this work, a green wood adhesive is developed from poly(vinyl alcohol) and lignin with molecular designs of lignin extending beyond those in nature. The lignin undergoes extraction from corncob residue, aldehydration, and phenolisation (phenol, resorcinol, and catechol) to significantly increase the phenolic hydroxyl groups (over 7.92 mmol/g), which has the effect of enhancing the hydrogen bonding force between the adhesive and the wood, thereby greatly improving adhesive performance. Compared with pure PVA, polyphenol lignin-containing PVA showed improved adhesion strength and hydrophobicity. PVA/resorcinol-lignin has the significantly improved wood lap shear strength (6.27 MPa, 77.6 % improvement) and hydrophobicity (almost 100 % increase in wet shear strength). This research not only provides a green and high-performance alternative raw material for wood adhesives but also broadens the path for large-scale application of biomass.

Multifunctional aqueous polyurethanes with high strength and self-healing efficiency based on silver nanowires for flexible strain sensors

Advanced sensor technology is widely applied in human motion monitoring and research. However, it often encounters problems such as scratches, fractures, and aging, which affect its lifespan and reliability. To address these challenges, we draw inspiration from the inherent self-healing properties of organic biological entities in nature to endow our sensors with self-healing capability. In this work, we constructed a reversible multi-hydrogen-bonded physical crosslinking network and introduced aromatic disulfide bonds into the polyurethane backbone. This design not only achieves a very high mechanical strength of the material, but also efficient self-healing properties. At 80 °C, the tensile strength of the WPU-U2D1 material reached 28.88 MPa, with a fracture elongation of 748.64%, and a self-healing efficiency as high as 99.24%. Based on this material, we successfully prepared a flexible conductive composite film (WPU@AgNW) and applied it to flexible strain sensors. The sensor demonstrated excellent sensitivity and reliability in human motion monitoring (electrical conductivity of 2.66 S cm-1), which provides a new idea for realising the breakthrough of high-performance flexible sensors. These outstanding properties makes it have great potential for application in flexible wearable devices, human-computer interaction, bionic electronic devices and other fields.

An overview of green synthesized silver nanoparticles towards bioactive antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal applications

Present review emphatically introduces the synthesis, biocompatibility, and applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), including their antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. A comprehensive discussion of various synthesis methods for AgNPs, with a particular focus on green chemistry mediated by plant extracts has been made. Recent research has revealed that the optical properties of AgNPs, including surface plasmon resonance (SPR), depend on the particle size, as well as the synthesis methods, preparation synthesis parameters, and used reducing agents. The significant emphasis on the use of synthesized AgNPs as antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal agents in various applications has been reviewed. Furthermore, the application areas have been thoroughly examined, providing a detailed discussion of the underlying mechanisms, which aids in determining the optimal control parameters during the synthesis process of AgNPs. Furthermore, the challenges encountered while utilizing AgNPs and the corresponding advancements to overcome them have also been addressed. This review not only summarizes the achievements and current status of plant-mediated green synthesis of AgNPs but also explores the future prospects of these materials and technology in diverse areas, including bioactive applications.

Bamboo fiber strengthened poly(lactic acid) composites with enhanced interfacial compatibility through a multi-layered coating of synergistic treatment strategy

In this study, a mild and eco-friendly synergistic treatment strategy was investigated to improve the interfacial compatibility of bamboo fibers with poly(lactic acid). The characterization results in terms of the chemical structure, surface morphology, thermal properties, and water resistance properties demonstrated a homogeneous dispersion and excellent interfacial compatibility of the treated composites. The excellent interfacial compatibility is due to multi-layered coating of bamboo fibers using synergistic treatment involving dilute alkali pretreatment, polydopamine coating and silane coupling agent modification. The composites obtained using the proposed synergistic treatment strategy exhibited excellent mechanical properties. Optimal mechanical properties were observed for composites with synergistically treated bamboo fiber mass proportion of 20 %. The tensile strength, elongation at break and tensile modulus of the treated composites were increased by 63.06 %, 183.04 % and 259.04 %, respectively, compared to the untreated composites. This synergistic treatment strategy and the remarkable performance of the treated composites have a wide range of applicability in bio-composites (such as industrial packaging, automotive lightweight interiors, and consumer goods).

Molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on synergistic interaction of honeycomb-like Ni-MOF decorated with AgNPs and N-GQDs for ultra-sensitive detection of olaquindox in animal-origin food

Olaquindox (OLA) in food from its illegal use possesses great harmful effects on humans, making it important to develop sensitive, inexpensive, and convenient methods for OLA detection. This study innovatively presented a molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor based on the synergistic effects of nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and a nickel-based metal-organic framework functionalized with silver nanoparticles (Ag/Ni-MOF) for OLA detection. N-GQDs and Ag/Ni-MOF with unique honeycomb structures were sequentially modified on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface to accelerate the electron transfer rate and increase the available region of the electrode. Molecularly imprinted polymers were further grown on the Ag/Ni-MOF/N-GQDs/GCE by electropolymerization to significantly enhance the selective recognition of OLA. The constructed sensor showed excellent performance for selective OLA determination, with a wide linear range (5-600 nmol·L^-1) and exceedingly low detection limit (2.2 nmol·L^-1). The sensor was successfully applied to detect OLA in animal-origin food with satisfactory recoveries (96.22-101.02%).

Controllable Preparation and Research Progress of Photosensitive Antibacterial Complex Hydrogels

Hydrogels are materials consisting of a network of hydrophilic polymers. Due to their good biocompatibility and hydrophilicity, they are widely used in biomedicine, food safety, environmental protection, agriculture, and other fields. This paper summarizes the typical complex materials of photocatalysts, photosensitizers, and hydrogels, as week as their antibacterial activities and the basic mechanisms of photothermal and photodynamic effects. In addition, the application of hydrogel-based photoresponsive materials in microbial inactivation is discussed, including the challenges faced in their application. The advantages of photosensitive antibacterial complex hydrogels are highlighted, and their application and research progress in various fields are introduced in detail.

Surface functionalized nanoparticles: A boon to biomedical science

The rapid development of nanomedicine has increased the likelihood that manufactured nanoparticles will one day come into contact with people and the environment. A variety of academic fields, including engineering and the health sciences, have taken a keen interest in the development of nanotechnology. Any significant development in nanomaterial-based applications would depend on the production of functionalized nanoparticles, which are believed to have the potential to be used in fields like pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. The functionalization of nanoparticles with particular recognition chemical moieties does result in multifunctional nanoparticles with greater efficacy while at the same time minimising adverse effects, according to early clinical studies. This is because of traits like aggressive cellular uptake and focused localization in tumours. To advance this field of inquiry, chemical procedures must be developed that reliably attach chemical moieties to nanoparticles. The structure-function relationship of these functionalized nanoparticles has been extensively studied as a result of the discovery of several chemical processes for the synthesis of functionalized nanoparticles specifically for drug delivery, cancer therapy, diagnostics, tissue engineering, and molecular biology. Because of the growing understanding of how to functionalize nanoparticles and the continued work of innovative scientists to expand this technology, it is anticipated that functionalized nanoparticles will play an important role in the aforementioned domains. As a result, the goal of this study is to familiarise readers with nanoparticles, to explain functionalization techniques that have already been developed, and to examine potential applications for nanoparticles in the biomedical sciences. This review's information is essential for the safe and broad use of functionalized nanoparticles, particularly in the biomedical sector.

The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil for upgradation from lignocellulosic biomass

The increasing depletion of oil resources and the environmental problems caused by using much fossil energy in the rapid development of society. The bio-oil becomes a promising alternative energy source to fossil. However, bio-oil cannot be directly utilized, owing to its high proportion of oxygenated compounds with low calorific value and poor thermal stability. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the most effective methods for refining oxygenated compounds from bio-oil. HDO catalysts play a crucial role in the HDO reaction. This review emphasizes the description of the main processing of HDO and various catalytic systems for bio-oil, including noble/non-noble metal catalysts, porous organic polymer catalysts, and polar solvents. A discussion based on recent studies and evaluations of different catalytic materials and mechanisms is considered. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for the development of catalytic hydrodeoxygenation for bio-oil upgradation are looked forward.

Bioengineered exosomal-membrane-camouflaged abiotic nanocarriers: neurodegenerative diseases, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

A bio-inspired strategy has recently been developed for camouflaging nanocarriers with biomembranes, such as natural cell membranes or subcellular structure-derived membranes. This strategy endows cloaked nanomaterials with improved interfacial properties, superior cell targeting, immune evasion potential, and prolonged duration of systemic circulation. Here, we summarize recent advances in the production and application of exosomal membrane-coated nanomaterials. The structure, properties, and manner in which exosomes communicate with cells are first reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of the types of exosomes and their fabrication methods. We then discuss the applications of biomimetic exosomes and membrane-cloaked nanocarriers in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, imaging, and the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Finally, we appraise the current challenges associated with the clinical translation of biomimetic exosomal membrane-surface-engineered nanovehicles and evaluate the future of this technology.
