Abstract
Urban agriculture may be an avenue to help alleviate strain on the global production of staple crops like corn (Zea mays), but significant knowledge gaps exist regarding the optimization of staple crop production in urban settings, and especially in arid urban settings where different challenges exist for crop success. We sought to assess abiotic and biotic factors that impact sweet corn production in six arid urban agricultural plots with varying levels of shade stress, a known inhibitor of corn production. Corn successfully reached maturity in 50% of the studied plots (n = 18). Microbial richness and diversity were uniformly high in all plot soils and not indicated as a hinderance to corn production nor correlated with corn success. Multiple corn success metrics were positively correlated with average daytime light intensity (r = 0.74 to 0.84) and soil organic matter (r = 0.77 to 0.89), suggesting that these factors are critical aspects of successful corn production. In plots that did not receive optimal light exposure, exceptional soil health and morning vs afternoon sun exposure offset at least some degree of shade stress in these arid urban environments. Corn success metrics were negatively correlated with soil calcium, magnesium, sodium and sulfate (r = -0.71 to -0.90), suggesting that minimizing or mitigating the buildup of salt constituents in soils is critical for successful corn production. Optimizing staple crop production in arid urban agricultural settings supports food chain stability and social and economic security of local communities. This work suggests abiotic and biotic drivers of corn success which can be utilized for crop optimization in these environments.

Abstract
Plant iron (Fe) nutrition and metabolism is a fascinating and challenging research topic; understanding the role of Fe in the life cycle of plants requires knowledge of Fe chemistry and biochemistry and their impact during development. Plant Fe nutritional status is dependent on several factors, including the surrounding biotic and abiotic environments, and influences crop yield and the nutritional quality of edible parts. The relevance of plant Fe research will further increase globally, particularly for Africa, which is expected to reach 2.5 billion people by 2050. The aim of this review is to provide an updated picture of plant Fe research conducted in African countries to favor its dissemination within the scientific community. Three main research hotspots have emerged, and all of them are related to the production of plants of superior quality, i.e., development of Fe-dense crops, development of varieties resilient to Fe toxicity, and alleviation of Fe deficiency, by means of Fe nanoparticles for sustainable agriculture. An intensification of research collaborations between the African research groups and plant Fe groups worldwide would be beneficial for the progression of the identified research topics.

Abstract
Plant hormones have been well known since Charles Darwin as signaling molecules directing plant metabolism. Their action and transport pathways are at the top of scientific interest and were reviewed in many research articles. Modern agriculture applies phytohormones as supplements to achieve desired physiological plant response. Auxins are a class of plant hormones extensively used for crop management. Auxins stimulate the formation of lateral roots and shoots, seed germination, while extensively high concentrations of these chemicals act as herbicides. Natural auxins are unstable; light or enzyme action leads to their degradation. Moreover, the concentration dependant action of phytohormones denier one-shot injection of these chemicals and require constant slow additive of supplement. It obstructs the direct introduction of auxins. On the other hand, delivery systems can protect phytohormones from degradation and provide a slow release of loaded drugs. Moreover, this release can be managed by external stimuli like pH, enzymes, or temperature. The present review is focused on three auxins: indole-3-acetic, indole-3-butyric, and 1-naphthaleneacetic acids. We collected some examples of inorganic (oxides, Ag, layered double hydroxides) and organic (chitosan, organic formulations) delivery systems. The action of carriers can enhance auxin effects via protection and targeted delivery of loaded molecules. Moreover, nanoparticles can act as nano fertilizers, intensifying the phytohormone effect, providing slow controlled release. So delivery systems for auxins are extremely attractive for modern agriculture opening sustainable management of plant metabolism and morphogenesis.

Abstract
The aim of this research was to study the effect of MnxOy nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine on the morphofunctional characteristics of the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crop. MnxOy nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine were synthesized using potassium permanganate and L-methionine. We established that MnxOy nanoparticles have a diameter of 15 to 30 nm. According to quantum chemical modeling and IR spectroscopy, it is shown that the interaction of MnxOy nanoparticles with L-methionine occurs through the amino group. It is found that MnxOy nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine have positive effects on the roots and seedling length, as well as the seed germination energy. The effect of MnxOy nanoparticles on Hordeum vulgare L. seeds is nonlinear. At a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL, there was a statistically significant increase in the length of seedlings by 68% compared to the control group. We found that the root lengths of samples treated with MnxOy nanoparticle sols with a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL were 62.8%, 32.7%, and 158.9% higher compared to samples treated with L-methionine, KMnO4, and the control sample, respectively. We have shown that at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL, the germination energy of seeds increases by 50.0% compared to the control sample, by 10.0% compared to the samples treated with L-methionine, and by 13.8% compared to the samples treated with KMnO4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nanotechnology offers many benefits in the globally important field of food production and human nutrition, particularly by implementing agricultural nanoproducts. Of these, edible plant fertilizers enriched with nanosized forms of essential metals, Mn and Fe, are growing in importance with the advantages of enhanced action on plant roots. SCOPE AND APPROACH This review focuses on the importance of tracking the bioaccumulation and biodistribution of these pertinent nanofertilizers. An emphasis is given to the critical analysis of the state-of-the-art analytical strategies to examine the Mn and Fe nanoparticles in edible plant systems as well as to shedding light on the vast gap in the methodologies dedicated to the speciation, in vitro simulation, and safety testing of these promising nanomaterials. Also provided are guidances for the food chemists and technologists on the lights and shadows of particular analytical approaches as a matter of authors' expertise as analytical chemists. KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS While the use of nanotechnology in agriculture seems to be growing increasingly, there is still a lack of analytical methodologies capable of investigating novel Mn- and Fe-based nanomaterials as potential fertilizers. Only the advent of reliable analytical tools in the field could bridge the gaps in our knowledge about processes in which those materials participate in the plant systems and their effects on crop production and quality of the produced food.

Abstract
AbstractDespite the soil could contain high amount of phosphorus (P), salinity reduce its availability for crop plants. Hence, farmers should practice several tactics to ameliorate P deficiency in soils. The current study aimed to assess the importance of zinc (Zn) supply for mitigating the deficiency of P for canola grown in saline soil. The effects of three Zn rates (0, 150 and 300 mg L−1, Zn0, Zn150 and Zn300, respectively) under three P rates (0, 36 and 72 kg P2O5 ha−1, P0, P36, and P72, respectively) on physiological status, yield and quality of canola were measured. Treatments were arranged in the strip plot design based on completely randomized blocks with three replicates. Findings exhibited that P36 recorded the highest values of membrane stability index in the 2nd season, while statistically leveled P72 for relative water content and chlorophyll fluorescence in both seasons. Zn300 exhibited potent effect on all canola physiological traits in both seasons. In both seasons, P36 × Zn300, P72 × Zn150 and P72 × Zn300 showed the maximum chlorophyll fluorescence and performance index values. Plots treated with P72 achieved 70.0% increase in canola seed yield, greater than the untreated ones. Seed yield obtained with Zn300 were higher than Zn0 and Zn150 by1.30 and 1.10 times in 2019/20 season and 1.23 and 1.05 times in 2020/21 season. The highest oil % was recorded with P0 × Zn150 and P72 × Zn0 in the 1st season and with P72 × Zn150 in the 2nd season.

Abstract
It is evident the increase in the occurrence of different stresses that impact agriculture and so there has been an increase in research to study stress mitigators including silicon (Si) and selenium (Se). However, the great challenge to be answered would be to assess whether it is possible to maximize these benefits by combining these two elements. Therefore, this review focused on discussing the feasibility of combining Se and Si in mitigating abiotic stresses and also measuring gains in yield and quality of agricultural products. These are the main challenges of plant mineral nutrition with these two elements for sustainable cultivation, ensuring food security with the possibility of improving human health. As the mode of application of an element can change absorption and assimilation processes and consequently the plant's response, it is important to consider research with supply of these elements via the foliar and root route. Thus, we highlighted the potential of the combined application of Se and Si and whether or not they are relevant to overcome the individual application in stress mitigation or even in plants without stress. In addition, we pointed out new directions for research on this topic in order to reinforce the combined use of stress relievers and their potential benefit to crop plants.
