Abstract
Eating disorders (ED) are psychological disorders characterized by dangerous eating behaviours, including protracted fasting and binge eating. Mental disorders comorbidities (e.g., anxiety and depression), as well as sleep difficulties, are common and might interfere with treatment response. This work investigated sleep quality, circadian preferences, and sleep disorders in ED patients compared to healthy controls (HC) and the impact of ED treatment on patients' sleep. A literature search on Pubmed, Web of Science, Medline, and PsychInfo included 27 studies. Random effect analyses were performed (sample eating disorders = 711; sample healthy controls = 653) and subgroup analyses were calculated based on the ED subgroups: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder. Whole sample analyses showed poorer physiological and subjective sleep quality in patients. Subgroup analyses showed that poorer physiological sleep was present only in anorexia nervosa. Two studies reporting circadian preferences and sleep disorders showed higher evening preference in patients and no differences in apnea prevalence between patients and healthy controls, respectively. Some studies suggested that specialized eating disorder treatments (e.g., Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for ED) can improve sleep quality in patients. Although these findings highlight poorer sleep in patients with ED compared to healthy controls, the mechanisms underlying sleep alterations in eating disorders remain to be identified.

Abstract
Rapid eye movements (REM) sleep density is the parameter proposed to explain the variability in the amount of eye movements during REM sleep. Alterations in REM sleep density have been proposed as a screening criterion for individuals with depression and other mental health conditions, but its accuracy has not been properly evaluated. The lack of consensus and the variability of the methods used to score it reduces the external validity of the results, hindering an adequate analysis of its diagnostic accuracy and clinical applicability. This scoping review aimed to identify and quantify the methods used to score REM sleep density, describing their main characteristics. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, and Web of Science. Only studies with objective measures for REM sleep density analysis in individuals with depression were considered eligible. The final sample comprised 57 articles, covering 64 analyses of REM sleep density. The relative frequency methods were the predominant measurement parameter for analyzing REM sleep density across studies. The most frequently adopted REM estimation unit was the number of REM events followed by mini-epochs containing REM. The most common unit of measurement were frequency/time measures. The results demonstrate that there is no consistency in the methods used to calculate REM sleep density in the literature, and a high percentage of studies do not describe their methods in sufficient detail. The most used method was the number of REM episodes per minute of REM sleep, but its use is neither unanimous nor consensual. The methodological inconsistencies and omissions among studies limit the replicability, comparability, and clinical applicability of REM sleep density. Future guidelines should discuss and include a specific methodology for the scoring of REM sleep density, so it can be consensually implemented in clinical services and research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sensor technologies offer exciting potential to objectively measure psychopathological correlates of eating pathology and eating disorder (ED) research utilizing sensors has rapidly proliferated in the past several years. The aims of the present review are: (1) characterize the types of sensors that have been utilized in ED research, (2) identify the psychopathological factors relevant to EDs that have been assessed using sensors, (3) describe the data supporting the validity and reliability of these sensors, (4) discuss limitations associated with these sensors, and (5) identify gaps that persist within the ED literature with regard to use of sensor technologies. METHOD A systematic search was conducted of PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, ProQuest, and "gray" literature sources. Eligible publications were empirical studies that utilized sensors to measure at least one psychological variable among clinical ED populations. RESULTS Sensors have been utilized with ED samples to measure eating behaviors, physical activity, sleep, autonomic nervous system activity, eyeblink startle response, visual attention, and visual-haptic object integration. The reliability and validity of these sensors varies widely and there are a number of significant gaps that remain in the literature with regard to the types of sensors utilized, context in which sensors have been used, and populations studied. DISCUSSION The existing literature utilizing sensors within ED research largely support the feasibility and acceptability of these tools. Sensors should continue to be utilized within the field, with a specific focus on examining the reliability and validity of these tools within ED samples and increasing the diversity of samples studied. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Sensor technologies, such as those included in modern smartwatches, offer new opportunities to measure factors that may maintain or contribute to symptoms of eating disorders. This article describes the types of sensors that have been used in eating disorders research, challenges that may arise in using these sensors, and discusses new applications of these sensors that may be pursued in future research.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine if low mood influenced the association between eating problem symptoms and self report sleeping quality in a large group of young women and men. A group of 381 female and male undergraduate students completed a set of self-report inventories in order to test a model developed for this study observing the association between eating problems, low mood, restricted dieting, weight and self-reported sleeping quality using a path analysis model. The model that best fit the data indicated that eating problem symptoms were associated with low mood and low mood was related to sleeping quality. There was also a direct association between eating problems and sleeping quality but this was reduced by the presence of low mood in the equation. There were no other direct relationships with sleeping quality but there was an association between low mood and low weight. There were also differences reported between men and women on sleeping quality suggesting that women in this sample reported more sleeping difficulties than men. In all this research demonstrates with a large non-clinical sample the links between eating problems, mood and sleeping difficulties.

Abstract
Sleep research on eating disorders has addressed two major questions: (1) the effects of chronic starvation in anorexia nervosa and of rapidly fluctuating eating patterns in bulimia nervosa on the sleep regulating processes and (2) the search for a significant neurobiological relationship between eating disorders and major depression. At present, the latter question appears to be resolved, since most of the available evidences clearly underline the notion that eating disorders (such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa) and affective disorders are two distinct entities. Regarding the effects of starvation on sleep regulation, recent research in healthy humans and in animals demonstrates that such a condition results in a fragmentation of sleep and a reduction of slow wave sleep. Although several peptides are supposed to be involved in these regulatory processes (i.e. CCK, orexin, leptin), their mode of action is still poorly understood. In opposite to these experimentally induced sleep disturbances are the findings that the sleep patterns in eating disorder patients per se do not markedly differ from those in healthy subjects. However, when focusing on the so-called restricting anorexics, who maintain their chronic underweight by strictly dieting, the expected effects of malnutrition on sleep can be ascertained. Furthermore, at least partial weight restoration results in a 'deepening' of nocturnal sleep in the anorexic patients. However, our knowledge about the neurobiological systems (as well as their circadian pattern of activity) that transmit the effects of starvation and of weight restoration on sleep is still limited and should be extended to metabolic signals mediating sleep.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Eating disorders may be associated with alterations in sleep. There is evidence that some bulimia nervosa (BN) patients have sleep abnormalities. No studies of their sleep-wake cycles in a natural environment have as yet been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an objective and subjective sleep-wake cycle of BN compared to a healthy age-equated control group (CON). METHOD Twenty-nine BN female and eighteen CON subjects were recruited. Sleep-wake patterns were monitored using ambulatory monitoring, mini-actigraphs (Min-Act), for 1 week. Each subject completed self-report questionnaires. RESULTS The self-reporting questionnaires revealed that BN complained of significantly more sleep disturbances than CON. The ambulatory sleep data revealed significant differences between BN and CON in sleep onset and offset time. DISCUSSION BN had sleep onset and sleep offset of 1 hr later, which may be connected to binge-purge patterns during the day. It is suggested that future research should focus on BN after remission.

Abstract
Psychiatric disorders are some of the most common causes of sleep-related complaints, particularly insomnia. Sleep abnormalities may be caused by CNS abnormalities associated with psychiatric illnesses as well as by accompanying behavioral disturbances. Although sleep patterns are not necessarily diagnostic of particular psychiatric disorders, there are relationships between certain sleep abnormalities and categories of psychiatric disorders. Sleep disturbances associated with psychiatric disorders and general approaches to treatment are reviewed.

Abstract
The physical complications of anorexia nervosa are common and can be life threatening, but psychiatrists and the increasing number of non-medical therapists involved in treatment programmes often overlook these complications. Cardiovascular complications are the most common, and the most likely to result in fatalities, particularly in those patients who vomit, purge or abuse diuretics, because of the electrolyte abnormalities induced. Osteoporosis is an early and perhaps irreversible consequence of severe weight loss. Further, there are dangers in rapid intravenous hyperalimentation.

Abstract
The baseline EEG sleep patterns of 10 young depressed patients, 20 patients with anorexia nervosa, 10 patients with bulimia nervosa, and 10 healthy subjects were found to be indistinguishable, except for an increased REM density in the depressed patients. In eating disorder patients, a concomitant major depressive episode had no influence on EEG sleep. The results of the cholinergic REM sleep induction test revealed a significantly faster induction of REM sleep in the depressed patients when compared with the eating disorder patients and the control subjects. This indicates a subthreshold hypersensitivity of the REM sleep triggering cholinergic transmitter system in depressives, but not in eating disorder patients.

Abstract
The electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep of 20 anorexic patients, 10 bulimic patients, and 10 age-matched healthy controls was studied. In addition, six anorexic patients and six bulimic patients had a cholinergic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep induction test (RIT) performed with the cholinergic agent RS 86. The three samples showed no major differences in sleep patterns. The same held true when attention was focused on patients who additionally met DSM-III criteria for major depression. The RIT results were similar in the patients with eating disorders and in controls, but differed from those reported in depressives. Therefore, the present study found no hints of depression-like sleep patterns in patients with eating disorders.
