Abstract
Alternate day fasting (ADF) which involves the repetition of a 2-day cycle of a day of free access to food followed by a day of limited or no access to food, is an effective dietary intervention for weight loss in both humans and rats. We have previously reported that when presented with a high energy (HE) and standard chow diet, rats maintained on an ADF schedule displayed decreased HE diet preference compared to controls. Both male and female ADF rats increased overall intake of chow. However, this increase was driven by both meal size and meal number for males and only number of meals for females. Administration of cholecystokinin (CCK) or the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist Exendin-4 (Ex-4) reduces food intake. It appears that CCK decreases food intake primarily through satiety signals whereas GLP-1 signaling may reduce intake by satiety and reward cues. Here, female and male rats were administered (i.p.) saline, 3.0 µg/kg Ex-4 (3 h before test), 3.0 µg/kg CCK (15 min before test) or a combination of both. Next, all rats were presented 23-h access to both HE diet and chow following food-restriction (ADF) or free access to chow (CON). Compared to saline-control sessions, administration of the combination of Ex-4 and CCK, but not Ex-4 or CCK alone, resulted in a decrease in both HE and chow intake early in the session for male ADF rats but the combination primarily decreased chow diet intake early in the session for female ADF rats. Thus, it appears that under these energy homeostatic conditions, administration of Ex-4 or CCK alone does not affect intake in ADF rats, but the combination produces decreases in feeding that are more than the sum of their individual effects. These findings support a role for the combination of GLP-1 and CCK signaling in the changes in diet preference induced by an alternate day fasting paradigm differentially in female and male rats.

Abstract
Background Defining reference intervals in experimental animal models plays a crucial role in pre-clinical studies. The hepatic parameters in healthy animals provide useful information about type and extension of hepatic damage. However, in the majority of the cases, to obtain them require an invasive techniques. Our study combines these determinations with dynamic functional test and imaging techniques to implement a non-invasive protocol for liver evaluation. The aim of the study was to determine reference intervals for hepatic function, perfusion and parenchyma attenuation with analytical and biochemical blood parameters, indocyanine green, ultrasound and computed tomography in six healthy SD rats. Methods Six males healthy SD rats were followed for 4 weeks. To determine hepatic function, perfusion and parenchyma attenuation analytical and biochemical blood parameters, indocyanine green, ultrasound and computed tomography were studied. Results were expressed as Means ± standard error of mean (SEM). The significance of differences was calculated by using student t-test, p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Indocyanine green clearance 5 and 10 minutes after its injection was 80.12% and 96.59%, respectively. Approximate rate of decay during the first 5 minutes after injection was 38% per minute. Hepatic perfusion evaluation with the high-frequency ultrasound was related to cardiovascular hemodynamic and renal perfusion. Portal area, hepatic artery resistance index, hepatic artery and portal peak systolic velocity and average between hepatic artery and porta was 3.41 ± 0.62 mm2, 0.57 ± 0.04 mm2/s, 693.24±102.53 mm2/s, 150.72 ± 17.80 mm2/s and 4.82 ± 0.96 mm2/s, respectively. Heart rate, cardiac output, left renal artery diammetre and renal blood flow were 331.01 ± 22.22 bpm, 75.58 ± 8.72 mL/min, 0.88 ± 0.04 mm2 and 13.65 ± 1.95 mm2/s. CT-scan hepatic average volume for each rat were 21.08±3.32, 17.57±2.76, 14.87±2.83 and 13.67±2.45 cm3 with an average attenuation coefficient of 113.51±18.08, 129,19±7.18, 141,47±1.95 y 151,67±1.2 HU. Conclusion Indocyanine green and high-frequency ultrasound could be used in rats as a suitable marker of liver function. Computed tomography, through the study of raw data, help to characterize liver parenchyma, and could be a potential tool for early detection of liver parenchymal alterations and linear follow-up of patients. Further studies in rats with liver disease are necessary to verify the usefulness of these parameters.

Abstract
Behavioral and neuroendocrine responses following threatening situations promote the release of corticosterone, which is known to modulate trauma-related learning and memory process. However, it remains unknown whether the aversive learning generated by interoceptive fear conditioning is affected by glucocorticoid modulation. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the role of dexamethasone suppression in encoding and expression of pentylenetetrazole-induced olfactory fear conditioning (OFC) and in contextual second-order conditioning promoted by the conditioned odor. Adult male Long-Evans rats were treated with dexamethasone 60 min before the encoding or the expression in both OFC and contextual second-order conditioning. Dexamethasone treatment impaired encoding and expression of the OFC, but failed to impair encoding and expression of the contextual second-order conditioning. Altogether, our results show that although OFC and thereafter contextual second-order conditioning may allow the study of traumatic memories, each order of conditioning seems to present specific features related to their pharmacological modulation. These findings highlight the importance of addressing the role of neuromodulatory systems in first-order and second-order conditioning to gain a better understanding of these phenomena and support future therapies related to traumatic memories.

Abstract
The present experiment evaluated the effects of the Number of Cagemates (0 vs 1 vs 2) on home cage ethanol drinking during Proximal Cagemate Drinking (PCD) procedures in Male and Female CD-1 mice. Continuous-access home cage 2-bottle (ethanol vs. water) free-choice procedures were employed. PCD procedures eliminate the distracting effects of direct physical contact between Drinkers and their Cagemates on ethanol drinking by imposing a translucent plastic barrier strip between them. If direct physical contact distracts from drinking, then one Cagemate would drink more ethanol and more water than two Cagemates housed together on the same side of the barrier. This would be the case even if two Cagemates stimulated more ethanol drinking in the Drinker housed on the other side of the barrier, due to the social stimulation effects of additional Cagemates. Results revealed that the ethanol intake of Female Drinkers was directly related to the number of Cagemates on the other side of the barrier strip, but this social stimulation effect was not observed in Male Drinkers. For Male Cagemates and Female Cagemates, the single Cagemate provided elevated ethanol intake and elevated water intake relative to the ethanol intake and water intake of each Cagemate in the two Cagemates condition. The data revealed that direct physical contact between Cagemates reduced their ethanol intake, even while stimulating ethanol intake of the Drinker on the other side of the barrier, indicating that the effects of social stimulation on ethanol drinking are not entirely due to effects of modeling or peer pressure. The PCD procedures allow the evaluation of effects of a broad range of social factors on home cage ethanol drinking in mice.

Abstract
Stress activates multiple neural and endocrine systems to allow an animal to respond to and survive in a threatening environment. The corticotropin-releasing factor system is a primary initiator of this integrated response, which includes activation of the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The energetic response to acute stress is determined by the nature and severity of the stressor, but a typical response to an acute stressor is inhibition of food intake, increased heat production, and increased activity with sustained changes in body weight, behavior, and HPA reactivity. The effect of chronic psychological stress is more variable. In humans, chronic stress may cause weight gain in restrained eaters who show increased HPA reactivity to acute stress. This phenotype is difficult to replicate in rodent models where chronic psychological stress is more likely to cause weight loss than weight gain. An exception may be hamsters subjected to repeated bouts of social defeat or foot shock, but the data are limited. Recent reports on the food intake and body composition of subordinate members of group-housed female monkeys indicate that these animals have a similar phenotype to human stress-induced eaters, but there are a limited number of investigators with access to the model. Few stress experiments focus on energy balance, but more information on the phenotype of both humans and animal models during and after exposure to acute or chronic stress may provide novel insight into mechanisms that normally control body weight.

Abstract
Background Stress alters the oxidant-antioxidant state and immune cell responses which disrupts its function to combat infection. Blastocystis hominis, a common intestinal protozoan has been reported to be opportunistic in immunocompromised patients namely cancer. B. hominis infectivity in other altered immune system conditions especially stress is unknown. We aimed to demonstrate the stress effects towards the susceptibility and pathogenicity of B. hominis infection. Methods/Findings Three-week-old Wistar rats were divided into four groups: (a)control; (b)stress-induced; (c)B. hominis infected; (d)stress-induced with B. hominis infection; (n = 20 respectively). Stress was induced for an hour daily (30 days) using a Belly Dancer Shaker. Weight gain was monitored, stool samples were collected for B. hominis screening and blood for the determination of differential count, levels of immunoglobulin, oxidative damage, and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) proliferation upon induction with solubilized antigen of B. hominis (Blasto-Ag). Group (b) exhibited the highest level of weight gain. Group (d) had higher levels of parasite cyst count in stools, serum IgE, oxidized protein and lipid compared to the group (c). Levels of monocyte and antioxidant in group (d) were decreased and their PBMCs showed highest inhibition of proliferation level when exposed to Blasto-Ag. Monocyte level in Group (b) showed insignificant difference compared to group (a) but was significantly lower compared to group (c). Antioxidant levels in group (c) were generally lower compared to group (a) and (b). Inhibition level exhibited by Blasto-Ag treated PBMCs of group (c) was higher compared to group (a) and (b). Conclusion The pathogenicity and augmentation of B. hominis infection is enhanced when stress is present. Lifestyles today are becoming increasingly stressed and the present findings suggest that the parasite which has been reported to be one of the most common organisms seen in stool surveys, namely in developing countries, may tend to be more pathogenic in stressful situations.

Abstract
We assessed the relation of experiences of racism to the incidence of obesity and the modifying impact of residential racial segregation in the Black Women's Health Study, a follow-up study of US black women. Racism scores were created from 8 questions asked in 1997 and 2009 about the frequency of "everyday" racism (e.g., "people act as if you are dishonest") and of "lifetime" racism (e.g., unfair treatment on the job). Residential segregation was measured by linking participant addresses to 2000 and 2010 US Census block group data on the percent of black residents. We used Cox proportional hazard models to estimate incidence rate ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Based on 4,315 incident cases of obesity identified from 1997 through 2009, both everyday racism and lifetime racism were positively associated with increased incidence. The incidence rate ratios for women who were in the highest category of everyday racism or lifetime racism in both 1997 and 2009, relative to those in the lowest category, were 1.69 (95% confidence interval: 1.45, 1.96; Ptrend < 0.01) and 1.38 (95% confidence interval: 1.15, 1.66; Ptrend < 0.01), respectively. These associations were not modified by residential segregation. These results suggest that racism contributes to the higher incidence of obesity among African American women.

Abstract
The effects of social stimulation on ethanol drinking in humans may depend on the gender of the drinker, the gender of the social stimulus, and the availability of ethanol provided to the social stimulus. The present study employed the Proximal Cagemate Drinking (PCD) Procedures to evaluate the effects of the gender of the social stimulus Cagemate mouse and the effects of providing ethanol to the Cagemate mouse on the drinking of ethanol and water by the male or female CD-1 Drinker mouse. Twelve groups of subjects were arranged in a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design with 3 levels of Cagemate Gender (Male vs. Female vs. None), 2 levels of Drinker Gender (Male vs. Female), and 2 levels of Cagemate Ethanol (Ethanol vs. No Ethanol). In the 8 groups assigned to social housing conditions, each Drinker mouse was housed with a Cagemate mouse on opposite sides of a clear plastic shoebox cage equipped with a clear plastic barrier that divided the cage lengthwise into 2 equal compartments. Six groups of Drinkers and 4 groups of Cagemates were provided with continuous access to 2 bottles (ethanol vs. water), while the 4 groups of Cagemates in the No Ethanol condition were provided with 2 bottles containing water. Results revealed that providing the Cagemate with ethanol elevated ethanol intake and ethanol preference but reduced water intake in Drinkers in Other-Gender Pairings (Male Drinker-Female Cagemate or Female Drinker-Male Cagemate) relative to Drinkers in Same-Gender Pairings (Male Drinker-Male Cagemate or Female Drinker-Female Cagemate). In contrast, when the Cagemate was not provided with access to ethanol, the opposite effects were observed. These novel PCD procedures reveal that the gender of the Cagemate and the Cagemate's access to ethanol influenced ethanol drinking in proximal-housed CD-1 Drinker mice.

Abstract
In numerous species social learning is predominant and adaptive, yet, we know little of its neurobiological mechanisms. Social learning is modulated by motivations and emotions, in a manner that is often sexually dimorphic. Additionally, stress hormones acutely modulate the related social cognitive process of social recognition. Whether this is true even for social learning is currently unknown. We investigated the acute effects of the stress hormone corticosterone (CORT) on the social transmission of food preferences (STFP) in male and female mice. During a brief social interaction an observer (OBS) acquires a food preference from a same-sex demonstrator (DEM). CORT (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 mg/kg), its ethanol vehicle (0.1%), and saline solution (0.9%) were administered intraperitoneally to the OBS, 10 min before a 30-min social interaction. Levels of plasma CORT were assessed in other mice that had received the same doses of CORT and either had or had not gone through a 30 min social interaction 10 min post-treatment. Exogenous CORT elicited levels of plasma level comparable to those seen at the peak of the circadian cycle and facilitated the STFP with males responding more than females both in terms of the duration of the food preference and the minimum effective dose. CORT also sexually dimorphically inhibited feeding, with females showing a greater dose-response than males. Saline solution and ethanol vehicles also sexually dimorphically facilitated the STFP and reduced feeding, but less than CORT did. These results indicate that CORT facilitates social learning, like social recognition. Hence, CORT may generally increase social information processing.

Abstract
Environmental factors contribute to the motivation to eat and can override homeostatic signals to stimulate eating in sated states, or inhibit eating in states of hunger. In particular, stress, fear, and anxiety have been linked to suppression of eating and anorexia nervosa. Here, we use a rodent model of an aversive cue-induced cessation of feeding. In this setting, food-deprived rats suppress eating when presented with a tone [conditioned stimulus (CS)] that was previously paired with footshocks [unconditioned stimulus (US)]. To begin to delineate the underlying neural circuitry we examined the two regions of the amygdala with well known roles in associative learning--the central nucleus (CEA) and the basolateral area (BLA; includes the basolateral, basomedial, and lateral nuclei). We produced selective, bilateral, neurotoxic lesions of the CEA or BLA, and then trained these rats together with sham-lesioned controls in a behavioral protocol that allowed a test for food consumption in the presence of an aversive CS. Both sham- and BLA-lesioned rats showed inhibition of eating when presented with the CS. In contrast, bilateral, neurotoxic lesions of the CEA abolished this effect. These results demonstrate that the CEA, but not BLA, is critical for control of feeding by an aversive CS. Previously we demonstrated that enhancement of eating by an appetitive CS is dependent on the integrity of BLA, but not CEA. Those findings together with the current results show a double dissociation between amygdalar subsystems that control food consumption by appetitive and aversive learned cues.

Abstract
PURPOSE Obesity is more common in black women than in white women. Racial discrimination is a form of chronic stress that may influence weight. METHODS We assessed the association of perceived racism with weight change between 1997 and 2005 in 43,103 women from the Black Women's Health Study, a prospective follow-up of U.S. black women aged 21-69 years at entry in 1995. Eight questions about perceptions and experiences of racism were asked in 1997 from which two summary variables were created: everyday racism (e.g., how often do people act "as if you are not intelligent?"), and lifetime racism (e.g., unfair treatment due to race "on the job"). Mixed linear regression models were used to calculate the multivariate adjusted means for changes in body weight across categories of perceived racism. RESULTS Weight gain increased as levels of everyday and lifetime racism increased. The mean multivariable-adjusted difference in weight change between the highest and the lowest quartile of everyday racism was 0.56 kg. The mean difference comparing the highest category of lifetime racism to the lowest was 0.48 kg. CONCLUSION These prospective data suggest that experiences of racism may contribute to the excess burden of obesity in U.S. black women.

Abstract
We have recently reported that food spillage increases during sleep deprivation in rats, which may lead to an overestimation of food intake in this condition. The objective of this study was to verify whether sleep deprivation induces an increase in gnawing behavior that could account for increased food spillage and apparent increase in food intake. We introduced wood blocks as objects for gnawing and determined the effects of their availability on food consumption and food spillage during sleep deprivation. Wood block availability reduced the amount of food removed from hoppers and decreased the amount of food spilled. However, weight loss still occurred during the sleep deprivation period, especially in the first 24 h, and it was related to a reduction in food intake. Sleep deprivation causes an increase in stereotyped gnawing behavior which largely accounts for increased food spillage observed during deprivation. Specifically, the observed increase in food removed from feeders seems to be due to an increase in gnawing and not to increased hunger. However, even when appropriately corrected for spillage, food intake decreased in the first 24 h of sleep deprivation, which accounted for most of the body weight loss seen during the 96 h of sleep deprivation.

Abstract
Obesity is a world-wide epidemic, and many factors, including stress, have been linked to this growing trend. After social stress (i.e., defeat), subordinate laboratory rats and most laboratory mice become hypophagic and, subsequently, lose body mass; the opposite is true of subordinate Syrian hamsters. After social defeat, Syrian hamsters become hyperphagic and gain body mass compared with nonstressed controls. It is unknown whether this increase in body mass and food intake is limited to subordinate hamsters. In experiment 1, we asked, do dominant hamsters increase food intake, body mass, and adiposity after an agonistic encounter? Subordinate hamsters increased food intake and body mass compared with nonstressed controls. Although there was no difference in food intake or absolute body mass between dominant and nonstressed control animals, cumulative body mass gain was significantly higher in dominant than in nonstressed control animals. Total carcass lipid and white adipose tissue (WAT) (i.e., retroperitoneal and epididymal WAT) masses were significantly increased in subordinate, but not dominant, hamsters compared with nonstressed controls. In experiment 2, we asked, does footshock stress increase food intake, body mass, and adiposity. Hamsters exposed to defeat, but not footshock stress, increased food intake relative to nonstressed controls. In animals exposed to defeat or footshock stress, body mass, as well as mesenteric WAT mass, increased compared with nonstressed controls. Collectively, these data demonstrate that social and nonsocial stressors increase body and lipid mass in male hamsters, suggesting that this species may prove useful for studying the physiology of stress-induced obesity in some humans.

Abstract
Chronic restraint stress, administered during early infection with Theiler's virus, was found to exacerbate the acute CNS viral infection in male and female mice. During the subsequent demyelinating phase of disease (a model of multiple sclerosis), the effect of stress on disease progression was sex-dependent. Previously stressed male mice had less severe behavioral signs of the chronic phase, better rotarod performance and decreased inflammatory lesions of the spinal cord, while the opposite pattern was observed in females. In addition, mice in all groups developed autoantibodies to MBP, PLP139-151 and MOG33-55.

Abstract
Lithium treatment of patients and laboratory animals causes increased body weight. Lithium also elevates the plasma corticosterone levels of rats. Our purpose was to correlate the gain of body weight with the effects of lithium on the thymus gland, the organ most susceptible to stress and to elevated corticosterone levels. Toward this end, it was also necessary to establish a reliable and reproducible model by use of an inbred strain of rats. Female rats of the inbred Lewis strain were injected subcutaneously with lithium chloride or saline for an 18-day period. Necropsies were performed one day after the last treatment or at intervals during the treatment period. Lithium increased body weight gain compared to controls in all the experiments on Lewis rats. Contrary to the body as a whole, lithium caused loss of weight of the thymus gland. The spleen lost less weight than the thymus. Both lithium and nonspecific stress elevate plasma corticosterone and cause thymolysis. Mild nonspecific stress is known to cause increased weight gain in rats as well as in humans. Our data suggest that lithium acts like nonspecific stress to increase weight gain as a consequence of elevated glucocorticoids, manifested in our experiments by thymolysis. This mechanism has not been proposed previously.

During early infection, stressed mice displayed decreased body weights and spontaneous activity; while increased behavioral signs of illness and plasma corticosterone (CORT) levels. During the subsequent chronic demyelinating phase of disease, previously stressed mice had greater behavioral signs of the chronic phase, worsened rotarod performance, and increased inflammatory lesions of the spinal cord. In addition, mice developed autoantibodies to myelin basic protein (MBP), proteolipid protein peptide (PLP139-151), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein peptide (MOG33-55).

Abstract
Repeated restraint stress (3 h/day for 3 days) causes a chronic down-regulation of body weight in rats. This study determined whether weight loss was influenced by the time of day that rats had access to food or that stress was applied. Groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a 40% kcal fat diet with food given ad libitum, only during the light phase or only during the dark phase. After 2 weeks of adaptation, rats within each feeding treatment were divided into four groups. One was exposed to repeated restraint at the start of the light phase, another was restrained at the start of the dark phase and the remaining groups were nonstressed controls for restrained rats. Body weight was significantly reduced in ad libitum- and dark-fed restrained rats, compared with nonstressed controls, from Day 2 of restraint, regardless of the time of day that they were stressed. There was no significant effect of restraint on weight change of light-fed rats. Food intake was inhibited by stress in ad libitum- and dark-fed rats, but it was not changed in light-fed rats. Serum corticosterone was increased by restraint in all rats irrespective of feeding schedule. This study demonstrates that stress-induced weight loss only occurs when rats have food available during their normal feeding period (dark phase) and is not determined by increased corticosterone release.

Abstract
Sensitivity to stress has been linked to the development of a variety of physical and psychological disorders. Studies to-date have focused on extreme stress phenotypes, have studied mostly male responses, have used limited dependent variables, and have included a limited number of measurement time points. The present experiment was designed to address these limitations. Feeding, body weight, open-field activity, acoustic startle reflex (ASR), and prepulse inhibition (PPI) responses of adult male and female Sprague-Dawley and Long-Evans rats to daily immobilization stress (20 min/day) were evaluated for 3 weeks. Stress significantly decreased feeding and body weight of males but generally not of females. Effects were greatest in Long-Evans males. Stress decreased 15-min activity levels for males on Stress Day 1, but not on other days. Stress did not affect 15-min activity levels of Long-Evans females but decreased 15-min activity levels of Sprague-Dawley females on every measurement day. ASR responses to stress differed based on rat strain; percent PPI responses differed based on rat strain and sex. Stress increased startle responses of Sprague-Dawley males and females but not of Long-Evans males and females. Stress reduced PPI of Long-Evans females on every measurement day but not of other groups. These findings indicate that strain and sex of rat is important to consider in evaluating behavioral and physiological responses to stress.

Abstract
The different types of striatal neuron show a range of vulnerabilities to a variety of insults. This can be clearly seen in Huntington's disease where a well mapped pattern of pathological events occurs. Medium spiny projection (MSP) neurons are the first striatal cells to be affected as the disease progresses whilst interneurons, in particular the NADPH diaphorase positive ones, are spared even in the late stages of the disease. The MSP neurons themselves are also differentially affected. The death of MSP neurons in the patch compartment of the striatum precedes that in the matrix compartment and the MSP neurons of the dorsomedial caudate nucleus degenerate before those in the ventral lateral putamen. The enkephalin positive striatopallidal MSP neurons are also more vulnerable than the substance P/dynorphin MSP neurons. We review the potential causes of this selective vulnerability of striatopallidal neurons and discuss the roles of endogenous glutamate, nitric oxide and calcium binding proteins. It is concluded that MSP neurons in general are especially susceptible to disruptions of cellular respiration due to the enormous amount of energy they expend on maintaining unusually high transmembrane potentials. We go on to consider a subpopulation of enkephalinergic striatopallidal neurons in the rat which are particularly vulnerable. This subpopulation of neurons readily undergo apoptosis in response to experimental manipulations which affect dopamine and/or corticosteroid levels. We speculate that the cellular mechanisms underlying this cell death may also operate in degenerative disorders such as Huntington's disease thereby imposing an additional level of selectivity on the pattern of degeneration. The possible contribution of the selective death of striatopallidal neurons to a number of clinically important psychiatric conditions including obsessive compulsive disorders and Tourette's syndrome is also discussed.

Abstract
In female mice on a control diet (3.6% fat) reduced physical activity leads to a reduction of the average life span. So the average age at death of an inactive group is 500 +/- 166 compared to 565 +/- 175 days in an active control group. If the animals are kept on a fat rich diet (12.4% fat) this effect of physical activity restriction is no longer observable and the average age at death is 570 +/- 142 days, within the range of the control animals. The increased fat intake seems to reduce the stress or to increase the resistance to stress in the activity restricted animals. So stress is a crucial determinant of life span.

Abstract
This study investigated whether appetitive operant food reinforcement or free-feeding behavior in rats, food-restricted to 85% of body weight, was disrupted by exposures to 3 h of restraint stress or by 3 h of restraint plus water immersion stress (RWI). Rats were trained under a 3-cycle 10-min time-out-10-min time-in fixed-ratio 15 (FR15) schedule of food reinforcement. Free-feeding was measured in a 3-cycle 10-min food jar-out-10-min food jar-in test conducted in the operant chambers. Three hours of restraint stress did not significantly affect response rate or food reinforcement in the operant FR15 task or in the free-feeding condition. In contrast, 3 h of RWI completely abolished operant food reinforcement and suppressed response rate, whereas free-feeding was significantly reduced but not abolished in food-restricted, hungry rats. We conclude that acute restraint stress in food-restricted, hungry rats does not affect their appetite or motor ability to lever-press for food nor did it affect their ability to feed in a free-feeding situation. In contrast, RWI stress may have induced a motor impairment, or some other aspect of motivation independent of hunger, that disrupted their performance in the operant FR15 task.

Abstract
An emerging body of evidence indicates that the adrenal hormone corticosterone modulates behavioral effects of abused drugs. Recently, it was reported that the self-administration and locomotor stimulatory effect of cocaine are blocked by adrenalectomy (ADX). In order to evaluate the effect of ADX on the brain reward system in general, and cocaine reward in particular, the effect of ADX on lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation (LHSS) and its facilitation by cocaine were investigated. Using curve-shift methodology, effects of cocaine (1.0, 3.0 and 10.0 mg/kg, i.p.) on the rewarding efficacy of brain stimulation were determined in ADX rats, with and without corticosterone supplementation, and compared with sham-operated controls. Results indicate that ADX does not affect LHSS or the facilitatory effect of cocaine. The divergence between these results and the results of cocaine self-administration studies is discussed in terms of the neuroanatomical and psychological processing of reward.
