Effects of the kinematic viscosity and surface tension on the bubble take-off period in a catalase-hydrogen peroxide system

The effect of kinematic viscosity and surface tension of the solution was investigated by adding catalase, glucose oxidase, or glucose on the bubble movement in a catalase-hydrogen peroxide system. The kinematic viscosity was measured using a Cannon-Fenske kinematic viscometer. The surface tension of the solution was measured by the Wilhelmy method using a self-made apparatus. The effects of the hole diameter/cell wall thickness, catalase concentration, glucose concentration, and glucose oxidase concentration on the kinematic viscosity, surface tension, and bubble take-off period were investigated. With our system, the effects of the changes in the solution materiality on the bubble take-off period were proven to be very small in comparison to the change in the oxygen-producing rate.

Principles and applications of thermal biosensors

A review of thermistor-based calorimetric measurement is presented. The principles of thermometric measurements are highlighted in the introduction followed by the instrumentation, materials and methods. Various applications relating to enzyme activity measurements, clinical monitoring, process monitoring, multianalyte determination, hybrid sensing, environmental monitoring, non-aqueous measurements and other miscellaneous applications are described. A brief note on future developments and a detailed reference list is also included.

Capillary electrophoresis coupled to biosensor detection

The present review highlights some modern aspects of biosensor revelation, a detection method which has already found a large number of applications in healthcare, food industry and environmental analysis. First, the concept of bio-recognition, which is at the heart of biosensor technology, is discussed, with emphasis on host-guest-like recognition mechanisms. This detection device has been successfully coupled, in its first applications, to chromatographic columns, which allow a high resolution of complex mixtures of analytes prior to interaction with the biosensing unit. The properties of the transducing elements, which should generate a signal (e.g., electrochemical, thermal, acoustic, optical) of proper intensity and of relative fast rise, are additionally evaluated and discussed. The review then focuses on potential applications of biosensing units in capillary electrophoresis (CE) devices. CE appears to be an excellent separation methodology to be coupled to biosensor detection, since it is based on miniaturized electrophoretic chambers, fast analysis times, complete automation in sample handling and data treatment and requires extremely small sample volumes. Although only a few applications of CE-based biosensors have been described up to the present, it is anticipated that this hyphenated technique could have a considerable expansion in the coming years.

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha alters glucose metabolism in suckling rats

Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), an important mediator of endotoxic shock, induces hypoglycemia and shock in adult animals. Indomethacin ameliorates TNF-alpha-induced hypoglycemia in the adult. However, effects of TNF-alpha on glucose metabolism in the newborn have not been well documented. The present study showed that in 10-day-old rats injected with TNF-alpha (4.5 x 10(7) U/kg, intraperitoneally) the plasma glucose concentration increased from 4.1 +/- 0.3 mmol/L to 6.9 +/- 0.5 mmol/L (P < .05) at 2 hours and subsequently decreased to 1.4 +/- 0.5 mmol/L (P < .05) at 6 hours, although plasma lactate concentration increased from 1.1 +/- 0.1 mmol/L to 5.5 +/- 0.3 mmol/L (P < .05) at 6 hours. Plasma insulin concentration remained unchanged throughout the experiment. TNF-alpha increased GLUT 1 messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance in the brain, liver, muscle, and fatty tissue (P < .05). Glucose uptake increased in association with the increase of GLUT1 mRNA abundance. TNF-alpha decreased mRNA abundance of GLUT 2 and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) in liver, suggesting decreased gluconeogenesis. Indomethacin (1.5 mg/kg 20 minutes before TNF-alpha, intraperitoneally) attenuated the hypoglycemia, the lactacidemia, and the increase of GLUT1 mRNA abundance and glucose uptake. Indomethacin attenuated the decrease of PEPCK mRNA abundance. We concluded that TNF-alpha induced hypoglycemia, increasing GLUT1 mRNA abundance and glucose uptake and decreasing PEPCK mRNA abundance in 10-day-old rats. Indomethacin attenuated the TNF-alpha-induced glucose dyshomeostasis.

Principles of enzyme thermistor systems: applications to biomedical and other measurements

This chapter presents an overview of thermistor-based calorimetric measurements. Bioanalytical applications are emphasized from both the chemical and biomedical points of view. The introductory section elucidates the principles involved in the thermometric measurements. The following section describes in detail the evolution of the various versions of enzyme-thermistor devices. Special emphasis is laid on the description of modern "mini" and "miniaturized" versions of enzyme thermistors. Hybrid devices are also introduced in this section. In the sections on applications, the clinical/biomedical areas are dealt with separately, followed by other applications. Mention is also made of miscellaneous applications. A special section is devoted to future developments, wherein novel concepts of telemedicine and home diagnostics are highlighted. The role of communication and information technology in telemedicine is also mentioned. In the concluding sections, an attempt is made to incorporate the most recent references on specific topics based on enzyme-thermistor systems.
