Abstract
A creative and sensitive method has been developed for the determination of triterpene glycosides concentrations in sea cucumber ( Stichopus japonicus) and related products by using d-quinovose (6-deoxyglucose) as the measurement standard by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and variable-wavelength detection. d-quinovose, which is a unique monosaccharide in holostane triterpene glycosides, was liberated by acid hydrolysis and precolumn derivatized by 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP). PMP-quinovose was analyzed by HPLC with 22% acetonitrile in 0.05 M KH2PO4 aquatic solution (pH 5.2) as mobile phase. The calibration curves of d-quinovose were linear within the range of 6.56-164 mg/L (r(2) > 0.995). The contents of triterpene glycosides in various S. japonicus products were determined after appropriate pretreatment methods. The concentration of triterpene glycosides was calculated by the formula C = C(qui) x alpha (alpha = 8.5). The result showed that this method was a simple, rapid, and stable method for the determination of triterpene glycosides in S. japonicus products.

Abstract
A fast capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method was developed for the determination and separation of saikosaponins a, c, and d in Chinese herbal extracts of Bupleurum Chinese DC from different areas. Detection at 214 nm with a system containing sodium borate buffer and mono-3-phenylcarbamoyl-beta-CD was found to be the most suitable approach for this analysis. Saikosaponins a, c, and d could be easily determined within 8 min. The effect of the concentration of mono-3-phenylcarbamoyl-beta-CD, the concentration of the running buffer and buffer pH value on the migration behavior of the saikosaponins is discussed.

Abstract
The simultaneous separation and determination of major anthraquinones (emodin, chrysophanol, rhein and their glucosides, aloe-emodin, sennoside A, and sennoside B) of Rhei Rhizoma were achieved by cyclodextrin modified capillary zone electrophoresis. The running electrolyte used in this method was 0.005 M alpha-cyclodextrin in 0.03 M borate buffer (pH 10.0) containing 20% acetonitrile, with an applied voltage of 20 kV.

Abstract
A method was developed for the determination of five highly toxic alkaloids in two commonly used herbal medicines by capillary electrophoresis, which had not been applied to the determination of Aconitum alkaloids before. The buffer contained 40 mM ammonium acetate and 0.1% acetic acid in 80% methanol. Five alkaloids can be determined in 15 min by a single run. The calibration curves showed a linear range from 2 to 200 mg/l for these alkaloids with correlation coefficients (R2) between 0.9988 and 0.9999. Detection limits (SIN = 3) varied from 0.85 to 1.90 mg/l. Recoveries ranged from 95 to 108.8%. The method can provide an effective tool for the strict control of these fetal herbal medicine components.

Abstract
The separation and determination of two anthraquinones, emodin and chrysophanol, and two bianthraquinones, cassiamin A and cassiamin B, were achieved by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The running electrolyte used in this method was 0.05 M hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin in 0.1 M borate buffer (pH 9) containing 10% acetonitrile, with an applied voltage of 20 kV. Application of this technique in the determination of the main bianthraquinones, cassiamin A and cassiamin B, of Cassia siamea is demonstrated in this paper.

Abstract
This study presents a high-performance capillary electrophoresis (CE) method to analyze five constituents of Puerariae radix, an important crude herb used in Chinese medicine. Puerarin, daidzin, daidzein, genistein and biochanin A are the bioactive constituents of Puerariae radix. Herein, those analytes were successfully separated within 6 min using a pH 10.1 borax-NaOH buffer. The effects of pH value and concentration of the running buffer on the separation of the five analytes were also examined. The relative standard deviations of the analytes' migration times were less than 0.38% under the optimized separation conditions. Notably, the correlation coefficients of the analytes' linear calibration graphs exceeded 0.998. Moreover, the amounts of the five constituents in three different Puerariae radix samples were determined by the CE method with a relatively simple extraction procedure.
