Deficits in the endogenous redirection of covert visual attention in chronic schizophrenia

Fixational eye movements and their associated evoked potentials during natural vision are altered in schizophrenia

Background

Visual exploration is abnormal in schizophrenia; however, few studies have investigated the physiological responses during selecting objectives in more ecological scenarios. This study aimed to demonstrate that people with schizophrenia have difficulties observing the prominent elements of an image due to a deficit mechanism of sensory modulation (active sensing) during natural vision.

Methods

An electroencephalogram recording with eye tracking data was collected on 18 healthy individuals and 18 people affected by schizophrenia while looking at natural images. These had a prominent color element and blinking produced by changes in image luminance.

Results

We found fewer fixations when all images were scanned, late focus on prominent image areas, decreased amplitude in the eye-fixation-related potential, and decreased intertrial coherence in the SCZ group.

Conclusions

The decrease in the visual attention response evoked by the prominence of visual stimuli in patients affected by schizophrenia is generated by a reduction in endogenous attention mechanisms to initiate and maintain visual exploration. Further work is required to explain the relationship of this decrease with clinical indicators.

Attention and expectation likely underlie temporal binding measured using the Libet Clock

An interesting finding that has emerged in studies of the sense of agency is that of a perceived compression of the temporal interval between actions and the outcomes they produce. This is generally referred to as temporal binding. Although temporal binding has been studied using various paradigms, possibly the most popular of these is the Libet Clock task. The Libet task is also interesting because it suggests that temporal binding can be decomposed into two components, one purportedly relating to actions and the other relating to outcomes. These are termed action binding and outcome binding, respectively. In this article, I focus specifically on temporal binding revealed using the Libet Clock task and propose the idea that attention underpins the action binding effect, while outcome binding, on the other hand, is driven by the effects of expectation.

Reduced Dorsal Visual Oscillatory Activity During Working Memory Maintenance in the First-Episode Schizophrenia Spectrum

Cognitive deficits in people with schizophrenia are among the hardest to treat and strongly predict functional outcome. The ability to maintain sensory precepts in memory over a short delay is impacted early in the progression of schizophrenia and has been linked to reliable neurophysiological markers. Yet, little is known about the mechanisms of these deficits. Here, we investigated possible neurophysiological mechanisms of impaired visual short-term memory (vSTM, aka working memory maintenance) in the first-episode schizophrenia spectrum (FESz) using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Twenty-eight FESz and 25 matched controls performed a lateralized change detection task where they were cued to selectively attend and remember colors of circles presented in either the left or right peripheral visual field over a 1 s delay. Contralateral alpha suppression (CAS) during the delay period was used to assess selective attention to cued visual hemifields held in vSTM. Delay-period CAS was compared between FESz and controls and between trials presenting one vs three items per visual hemifield. CAS in dorsal visual cortex was reduced in FESz compared to controls in high-load trials, but not low-load trials. Group differences in CAS were found beginning 100 ms after the disappearance of the memory set, suggesting deficits were not due to the initial deployment of attention to the cued visual hemifield prior to stimulus presentation. CAS was not greater for high-load vs low-load trials in FESz subjects, although this effect was prominent in controls. Further, lateralized gamma (34-40 Hz) power emerged in dorsal visual cortex prior to the onset of CAS in controls but not FESz. Gamma power in this cluster differed between groups at both high and low load. CAS deficits observed in FESz were correlated with change detection accuracy, working memory function, estimated IQ, and negative symptoms. Our results implicate deficits in CAS in trials requiring broad, but not narrow, focus of attention to spatially distributed objects maintained in vSTM in FESz, possibly due to reduced ability to broadly distribute visuospatial attention (alpha) or disruption of object-location binding (gamma) during encoding/consolidation. This early pathophysiology may shed light upon mechanisms of emerging working memory deficits that are intrinsic to schizophrenia.

Is Attentional Filtering Impaired in Schizophrenia?

Recent evidence suggests that schizophrenia involves hyperfocusing, an unusually narrow but intense focusing of processing resources. This appears to contradict the classic idea that schizophrenia involves an impairment in the ability to focus on relevant information and filter irrelevant information. Here, we review one set of studies suggesting that attentional filtering is impaired in people with schizophrenia and another set of studies suggesting that attentional filtering is unimpaired or even enhanced in these individuals. Considerable evidence supports both conclusions, and we propose 3 potential ways of reconciling the conflicting evidence. First, impaired attentional filtering may occur primarily during periods of active psychosis, with hyperfocusing being a part of the broad pattern of cognitive impairment that persists independent of the level of positive symptoms. Second, schizophrenia may involve hyperfocusing in the visual modality and impaired attentional filtering in the auditory modality. Third, attention may be directed toward irrelevant inputs as a result of impaired executive control, and hyperfocusing on those inputs may be functionally equivalent to a failure of attentional filtering. Given the widespread clinical observations and first-person reports of impaired attentional filtering in schizophrenia, it will be important for future research to test these possibilities.

Failures in top-down control in schizophrenia revealed by patterns of saccadic eye movements

Successful execution of many behavioral goals relies on well-organized patterns of saccadic eye movements, and in complex tasks, these patterns can reveal the component processes underlying task performance. The present study examined the pattern of eye movements in a visual search task to provide evidence of attentional control impairments in people with schizophrenia (PSZ). We tested PSZ(N = 38) and nonpsychiatric control subjects (NCS, N = 35) in a task that was designed to stress top-down control by pitting task goals against bottom-up salience. Participants searched for either a low-contrast (nonsalient) or a high-contrast (salient) target among low- and high-contrast distractors. By examining fixations of the low- and high-contrast items, we evaluated the ability of PSZ and NCS to focus on low-salience targets and filter out high-salience distractors (or vice versa). When participants searched for a salient target, both groups successfully focused on relevant, high-contrast stimuli and filtered out target-mismatched, low-contrast stimuli. However, when searching for a nonsalient target, PSZ were impaired at efficiently suppressing high-contrast (salient) distractors. Specifically, PSZ were more likely than NCS to fixate and revisit salient distractors, and they dwelled on these items longer than did NCS. The results provide direct evidence that PSZ are impaired in their ability to utilize top-down goals to overcome the prepotent tendency to focus attention on irrelevant but highly salient information. Dysfunction of Magnocellular/dorsal Processing Stream in Schizophrenia

Background:

Patients with schizophrenia show not only cognitive, but also perceptual deficits. Perceptual deficits may affect different sensory modalities. Among these, the impairment of visual information processing is of particular relevance as demonstrated by the high incidence of visual disturbances. In recent years, the study of neurophysiological mechanisms that underlie visuo-perceptual, -spatial and -motor disorders in schizophrenia has increasingly attracted the interest of researchers.

Objective:

The study aims to review the existent literature on magnocellular/dorsal (occipitoparietal) visual processing stream impairment in schizophrenia. The impairment of relatively early stages of visual information processing was examined using experimental paradigms such as backward masking, contrast sensitivity, contour detection, and perceptual closure. The deficits of late processing stages were detected by examining visuo-spatial and -motor abilities.

Results:

Neurophysiological and behavioral studies support the existence of deficits in the processing of visual information along the magnocellular/dorsal pathway. These deficits appear to affect both early and late stages of visual information processing.

Conclusion:

The existence of disturbances in the early processing of visual information along the magnocellular/dorsal pathway is strongly supported by neurophysiological and behavioral observations. Early magnocellular dysfunction may provide a substrate for late dorsal processing impairment as well as higher-level cognition deficits.

Different shades of default mode disturbance in schizophrenia: Subnodal covariance estimation in structure and function

Schizophrenia is a devastating mental disease with an apparent disruption in the highly associative default mode network (DMN). Interplay between this canonical network and others probably contributes to goal-directed behavior so its disturbance is a candidate neural fingerprint underlying schizophrenia psychopathology. Previous research has reported both hyperconnectivity and hypoconnectivity within the DMN, and both increased and decreased DMN coupling with the multimodal saliency network (SN) and dorsal attention network (DAN). This study systematically revisited network disruption in patients with schizophrenia using data-derived network atlases and multivariate pattern-learning algorithms in a multisite dataset (n = 325). Resting-state fluctuations in unconstrained brain states were used to estimate functional connectivity, and local volume differences between individuals were used to estimate structural co-occurrence within and between the DMN, SN, and DAN. In brain structure and function, sparse inverse covariance estimates of network coupling were used to characterize healthy participants and patients with schizophrenia, and to identify statistically significant group differences. Evidence did not confirm that the backbone of the DMN was the primary driver of brain dysfunction in schizophrenia. Instead, functional and structural aberrations were frequently located outside of the DMN core, such as in the anterior temporoparietal junction and precuneus. Additionally, functional covariation analyses highlighted dysfunctional DMN-DAN coupling, while structural covariation results highlighted aberrant DMN-SN coupling. Our findings reframe the role of the DMN core and its relation to canonical networks in schizophrenia. We thus underline the importance of large-scale neural interactions as effective biomarkers and indicators of how to tailor psychiatric care to single patients.

Decomposing mechanisms of abnormal saccade generation in schizophrenia patients: Contributions of volitional initiation, motor preparation, and fixation release

Clinical and theoretical models suggest deficient volitional initiation of action in schizophrenia patients. Recent research provided an experimental model of testing this assumption using saccade tasks. However, inconsistent findings necessitate a specification of conditions on which the deficit may occur. The present study sought to detect mechanisms that may contribute to poor performance. Sixteen schizophrenia patients and 16 healthy control participants performed visually guided and two types of volitional saccade tasks. All tasks varied as to whether the initial fixation stimulus disappeared (fixation stimulus offset) or continued during saccade initiation, and whether a direction cue allowed motor preparation of the specific saccade. Saccade latencies of the two groups were differentially affected by task type, fixation stimulus offset, and cueing, suggesting abnormal volitional saccade generation, fixation release, and motor preparation in schizophrenia. However, substantial performance deficits may only occur if all affected processes are required in a task.

Paying attention to MMN in schizophrenia

The aim of this review is to explore the phenomenon of reduced mismatch negativity (MMN) in persons with schizophrenia and the possible relationship it has with attention impairments. In doing so we discuss (i) the prediction error account of MMN, (ii) reduced MMN as a faulty predictive processing system in persons with schizophrenia, (iii) the role of these systems in relevance filtering and attentional resource protection, (iv) attentional impairments in persons with schizophrenia, and (v) research that has explored MMN and attention in schizophrenia groups. Our review of the literature suggests that no study has appropriately examined the functional impact of smaller MMN in schizophrenia on the performance of a concurrent attention task. We conclude that future research should explore this notion further in the hope that it might embed MMN findings within outcomes of functional significance to individuals with the illness and those providing treatment. Deficits in the covert orienting of attention in children with Developmental Coordination Disorder: does severity of DCD count?

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) show deficits in the covert orienting of visuospatial attention, suggesting an underlying issue in attentional disengagement and/or inhibitory control. However, an important theoretical issue that remains unclear is whether the pattern of deficits varies with DCD severity. Fifty-one children with moderate DCD (MDCD), 24 children with severe DCD (SDCD), and 38 typically developing (TD) children participated in the study. Their performance was compared on the covert orienting of visuospatial attention task (COVAT), specifically the voluntary control mode. Results showed that the pattern of performance differed between groups. At a short stimulus-response asynchrony (350 ms), the difference in response times for validly and invalidly cued trials was similar for all three groups. However, at the longer SOA (800 ms), both DCD groups continued to show a relative disadvantage for responses that followed invalid cues. This suggests that a deficit in response inhibition and/or attentional disengagement is manifest in children with both moderate and severe DCD. The implications of these findings for theory and treatment are discussed.

Failure of schizophrenia patients to overcome salient distractors during working memory encoding

BACKGROUND

Prior demonstrations of impaired attentional control in schizophrenia focused on conditions in which top-down control is needed to overcome prepotent response tendencies. Attentional control over stimulus processing has received little investigation. Here, we test whether attentional control is impaired during working memory encoding when salient distractors compete with less salient task-relevant stimuli.

METHODS

Patients with schizophrenia (n = 28) and healthy control subjects (n = 25) performed a visuospatial working memory paradigm in which half of the to-be-encoded stimuli flickered to increase their salience. After a 2-second delay, stimuli reappeared and participants had to decide whether or not a probed item had shifted location.

RESULTS

In the unbiased condition where flickering and nonflickering stimuli were equally likely to be probed, both groups displayed a trend toward better memory for the flickering items. In the flicker-bias condition in which the flickering stimuli were likely to be probed, both groups displayed a robust selection advantage for the flickering items. However, in the nonflicker-bias condition in which the nonflickering stimuli were likely to be probed, only healthy control subjects showed selection of the nonflickering items. Patients displayed a trend toward preferential memory for the flickering items, as in the unbiased condition.

CONCLUSIONS

Both groups were able to select salient over nonsalient stimuli, but patients with schizophrenia were unable to select nonsalient over salient stimuli, consistent with impairment in the effortful control of attention. These findings demonstrate the generality of top-down control failure in schizophrenia in the face of bottom-up competition from salient stimuli as with prepotent response tendencies.

The 5-choice continuous performance test: evidence for a translational test of vigilance for mice

Background

Attentional dysfunction is related to functional disability in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer's disease. Indeed, sustained attention/vigilance is among the leading targets for new medications designed to improve cognition in schizophrenia. Although vigilance is assessed frequently using the continuous performance test (CPT) in humans, few tests specifically assess vigilance in rodents.

Methods

We describe the 5-choice CPT (5C-CPT), an elaboration of the 5-choice serial reaction (5CSR) task that includes non-signal trials, thus mimicking task parameters of human CPTs that use signal and non-signal events to assess vigilance. The performances of C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice were assessed in the 5C-CPT to determine whether this task could differentiate between strains. C57BL/6J mice were also trained in the 5CSR task and a simple reaction-time (RT) task involving only one choice (1CRT task). We hypothesized that: 1) C57BL/6J performance would be superior to DBA/2J mice in the 5C-CPT as measured by the sensitivity index measure from signal detection theory; 2) a vigilance decrement would be observed in both strains; and 3) RTs would increase across tasks with increased attentional load (1CRT task<5CSR task<5C-CPT).

Conclusions

C57BL/6J mice exhibited superior SI levels compared to DBA/2J mice, but with no difference in accuracy. A vigilance decrement was observed in both strains, which was more pronounced in DBA/2J mice and unaffected by response bias. Finally, we observed increased RTs with increased attentional load, such that 1CRT task<5CSR task<5C-CPT, consistent with human performance in simple RT, choice RT, and CPT tasks. Thus we have demonstrated construct validity for the 5C-CPT as a measure of vigilance that is analogous to human CPT studies.

The tell-tale tasks: a review of saccadic research in psychiatric patient populations

This review focuses on saccade research with adult psychiatric patients. It begins with an introduction of the various types of saccades and the tasks used to evoke them. The functional significance of the different types of eye movements is briefly discussed. Research findings regarding the saccadic performance of different adult psychiatric patient populations are discussed in detail, with particular emphasis on findings regarding error rates, response latencies, and any specific task parameters that might affect those variables. Findings regarding the symptom, neurocognitive, and neural correlates of saccadic performance and the functional significance of patients' saccadic deficits are also discussed. We also discuss the saccadic deficits displayed by various patient groups in terms of circuitry (e.g. cortical/basal ganglia circuits) that may be implicated in the underlying pathophysiology of several of these disorders. Future directions for research in this growing area are offered.

The construct of attention in schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is widely thought to involve deficits of attention. However, the term "attention" can be defined so broadly that impaired performance on virtually any task could be construed as evidence for a deficit in attention, and this has slowed cumulative progress in understanding attention deficits in schizophrenia. To address this problem, we divide the general concept of attention into two distinct constructs: input selection, the selection of task-relevant inputs for further processing; and rule selection, the selective activation of task-appropriate rules. These constructs are closely tied to working memory, because input selection mechanisms are used to control the transfer of information into working memory and because working memory stores the rules used by rule selection mechanisms. These constructs are also closely tied to executive function, because executive systems are used to guide input selection and because rule selection is itself a key aspect of executive function. Within the domain of input selection, it is important to distinguish between the control of selection--the processes that guide attention to task-relevant inputs--and the implementation of selection--the processes that enhance the processing of the relevant inputs and suppress the irrelevant inputs. Current evidence suggests that schizophrenia involves a significant impairment in the control of selection but little or no impairment in the implementation of selection. Consequently, the CNTRICS (Cognitive Neuroscience Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia) participants agreed by consensus that attentional control should be a priority target for measurement and treatment research in schizophrenia.

Deficit of endogenous spatial orienting of attention in children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS)

Attention difficulties have been reported in children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) but have not yet been fully specified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functions of exogenous and endogenous spatial orienting of attention and alerting in these children. Two versions of the spatial cueing paradigm and an alerting task, including trials with and without warning signal, were performed by 25 children with BECTS aged 6-12 years and 25 controls matched for age, gender and IQ. In these three tasks, patients were slower and made more omissions than controls. The alert effect amplitude was comparable in both groups at the longer SOAs (450 ms and 800 ms) while, at the shortest SOA (100 ms), it was greater in controls than in the BECTS group. In the first version of the spatial cueing task (peripheral cues and no probability information), the validity effect amplitude, measured by longer response times (RTs) in invalid trials compared to valid trials, was comparable in both groups. In the second version (central cues and a 75% probability that the target would appear at the cued location), the validity effect was larger in the BECTS group compared to controls because of a higher cost of invalid trials compared to neutral trials. These results suggest the existence of impairments in the endogenous orienting of attention in children with BECTS, in particular an attention disengagement deficit, while exogenous orienting of attention appears to be preserved.

More attention must be paid: The neurobiology of attentional effort

Increases in attentional effort are defined as the motivated activation of attentional systems in response to detrimental challenges on attentional performance, such as the presentation of distractors, prolonged time-on-task, changing target stimulus characteristics and stimulus presentation parameters, circadian phase shifts, stress or sickness. Increases in attentional effort are motivated by the expected performance outcome; in the absence of such motivation, attentional performance continues to decline or may cease altogether. The beneficial effects of increased attentional effort are due in part to the activation of top-down mechanisms that act to optimize input detection and processing, thereby stabilizing or recovering attentional performance in response to challenges. Following a description of the psychological construct "attentional effort", evidence is reviewed indicating that increases in the activity of cortical cholinergic inputs represent a major component of the neuronal circuitry mediating increases in attentional effort. A neuronal model describes how error detection and reward loss, indicating declining performance, are integrated with motivational mechanisms on the basis of neuronal circuits between prefrontal/anterior cingulate and mesolimbic regions. The cortical cholinergic input system is activated by projections of mesolimbic structures to the basal forebrain cholinergic system. In prefrontal regions, increases in cholinergic activity are hypothesized to contribute to the activation of the anterior attention system and associated executive functions, particularly the top-down optimization of input processing in sensory regions. Moreover, and influenced in part by prefrontal projections to the basal forebrain, increases in cholinergic activity in sensory and other posterior cortical regions contribute directly to the modification of receptive field properties or the suppression of contextual information and, therefore, to the mediation of top-down effects. The definition of attentional effort as a cognitive incentive, and the description of a neuronal circuitry model that integrates brain systems involved in performance monitoring, the processing of incentives, activation of attention systems and modulation of input functions, suggest that 'attentional effort' represents a viable construct for cognitive neuroscience research.

The speed of visual attention in schizophrenia: electrophysiological and behavioral evidence

Schizophrenia is characterized by a substantial slowing of manual response times and by impairments in attention. However, prior research has not investigated whether attention itself is slowed in schizophrenia, and this was the goal of the present study. In Experiment 1, the N2pc component of the event-related potential waveform-an electrophysiological correlate of the focusing of attention-was recorded from 24 schizophrenia spectrum patients and 13 control subjects. Although behavioral response times were delayed by over 100 ms in the patient group, the onset latency of the N2pc component was virtually identical across groups, and no reduction in N2pc amplitude was observed in the patient group. In Experiment 2, a new cueing paradigm was developed to provide a behavioral measure of the speed of attention in 22 schizophrenia spectrum patients and 13 control subjects. We found that the average time required to allocate attention to a cued location was only 19 ms greater for the patient group than for the control group, with most patients within the range of the control subjects. Together, these experiments revealed little or no slowing of the allocation of visual-spatial attention in patients with schizophrenia. Thus, the mechanisms responsible for allocating attention to salient visual targets appear to be largely unaffected by the illness, and the well documented slowing of manual response times in schizophrenia cannot easily be explained by a slowing of attention.

Deficient inhibition of return in schizophrenia-further evidence from an independent sample

Previous studies on spatial orienting of attention in schizophrenia demonstrated a deficit of Inhibition of Return (IOR). However, other studies reported a delay in the manifestation, but an overall normal amount of IOR in patients with schizophrenia. However, the latter studies used a cue-back manipulation which is known to reinstate or speed up IOR. Hence, it is not clear whether even very long cue target intervals would allow IOR to develop in patients with schizophrenia in the absence of a cue-back manipulation. The aim of the present study was to study IOR in patients with schizophrenia using a single cue paradigm and a very long cue target interval of >1 s in order to differentiate between blunted and delayed IOR. We examined 32 inpatients with schizophrenia and 16 healthy controls with a covert orienting of attention task (COVAT) with non-predictive peripheral cues and three stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA: 100 ms, 800 ms and 1050 ms). We found a lack of Inhibition of Return (IOR) in patients with schizophrenia with both long SOAs of 800 and 1050 ms. As in a previous study of our group, the IOR deficit was unrelated to psychopathology, length of illness, number of previous psychotic episodes and type of neuroleptic medication. In summary, our study confirms and extends previous reports of deficient IOR in patients with schizophrenia. IOR seems to be not just delayed, but rather profoundly disturbed in schizophrenia. Deficient IOR in patients with schizophrenia might be viewed as a trait or alternatively as a vulnerability marker of the disorder.

Blunted inhibition of return in schizophrenia-evidence from a longitudinal study

Previous cross-sectional studies on covert orienting of visual attention in schizophrenia have been inconsistent. In the present longitudinal study, we examined 40 medicated acutely ill inpatients with a covert orienting of attention task (COVAT) shortly after admission, and again 12-16 weeks after the initial examination, while most patients were in (partial) remission. We administered a COVAT with nonpredictive peripheral cues and two stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOA; 100 and 800 ms). In addition, we examined 34 healthy control subjects twice (2 weeks apart). The most important finding was a lack of inhibition of return (IOR) in patients with schizophrenia, both at the first examination in an acute psychotic state and at the follow-up examination after considerable clinical improvement. The IOR deficit was unrelated to psychopathology, length of illness, number of previous psychotic episodes, and type of neuroleptic (NL) medication. Deficient IOR in patients with schizophrenia appears to be state-independent and might be viewed as a trait or vulnerability marker of the disorder. Subsequent studies with never-medicated populations and with schizotypal or high-risk subjects are needed in order to further analyze the possible role of NL medications and to clarify whether blunted IOR might represent a vulnerability marker of schizophrenia.

The cognitive neuropsychiatric approach to investigating the neurobiology of schizophrenia and other disorders

In this paper, we examine a cognitive neuropsychiatric approach to understanding neuropsychiatric disorders by examining recent data in schizophrenia. By understanding and applying this approach, we suggest that the processes underlying the neurobiology of a range of other psychiatric disorders can be understood. Further, an assessment of the brain-behaviour relationships through this emerging discipline provides testable models for further study, using a range of techniques including functional and other imaging techniques.

Interhemispheric transfer and laterality effects in simple visual reaction time in schizophrenics

INTRODUCTION

There is evidence that schizophrenics have an abnormal corpus callosum and an abnormal pattern of cerebral asymmetries. We investigated whether there are corresponding functional abnormalities in interhemispheric transfer (IT) and laterality effects.

METHODS

Medicated schizophrenic patients and matched controls were tested in the Poffenberger paradigm, that is, a simple manual reaction time (RT) paradigm with laterally presented visual stimuli designed to provide a behavioural estimate of IT. By subtracting RT averaged across the uncrossed hand-hemifield conditions, from RT averaged across the crossed hand-hemifield conditions, one can obtain an estimate of IT time.

RESULTS

In schizophrenic patients the difference between crossed and uncrossed conditions was 0 because of an unusually prolonged RT in the uncrossed condition right hand/ right field. A broadly similar result has been obtained previously in the tactile modality (Ditchfield & Hemsley, 1990) and is consistent with a left hemisphere impairment. This effect was still present when the patients were retested about 2 years later.

CONCLUSIONS

These results demonstrate the existence in schizophrenic patients of a consistent slowing down of simple visuomotor responses subserved by the left hemisphere.

The simon effect in schizophrenic patients with negative symptoms

Automatic shifting of visual attention was investigated using the Simon task in schizophrenic patients with prevailing negative symptomatology. Reaction times were recorded in condition of spatial correspondence and non-correspondence between side of spatially defined responses and side of stimulus presentation. Schizophrenic patients showed asymmetries between the two hemifields attributable to a slowing down of reaction times for non-corresponding trials in the left hemifield. These results are interpreted as a deficit in the process that inhibits the automatic corresponding response, and in general as a difficulty to inhibit dependence on external stimuli, in the left hemifield/right hemisphere.

Schizophrenic vulnerability: a deficiency of the correlation between foveal perception and oculomotor proprioception?

In a previous paper published in Medical Hypotheses, the author proved by a simple mirror test a dissociation between the goals of selective attention and bifoveal fixation in a schizophrenic patient. In the present article, she enters into the details of the patient's results in ophthalmological tests which revealed an opposite deviation of accommodation and vergence, compensated in a way incompatible with Hering's law. She expounds that Hering's law is based on the correlation of retinal data with proprioceptive information of the exterior eye-muscles, and that schizophrenic vulnerability might consist of a disturbance of this correlation favouring fusion of patterns in the remote and external space over fusion in the near and central space. Some phenomena found in schizophrenic patients and their carrier parents are explained in the light of this hypothesis. Finally, the author gives detailed advice on how to overcome difficulties in the correction of the ophthalmological deviations that induce the vulnerability to take effect. ¿

Eye tracking in normals: spem asymmetries and association with schizotypy

SPEM was recorded electro-oculographically during visual tracking of sinusoidal targets oscillating at .4 and .8 cycles per second in one hundred nineteen undergraduates. The logarithms of median root mean square values were used to assess tracking accuracy for leftward and rightward halfcycles of tracking. Over the entire sample, there was a significant superiority of rightward over leftward tracking, which, given evidence for the ipsilateral mediation of SPEM at the cortical level, suggests a right hemisphere predominance in the control of SPEM in normal subjects. Individual tracking asymmetry was associated with overall tracking accuracy such that subjects with relatively deficient leftward tracking and those with a larger absolute magnitude of asymmetry had poorer overall tracking. High scores on an MMPI schizotypy measure (Sum 2-7-8-0) were significantly related to poorer overall SPEM accuracy, individual tracking asymmetry, the absolute magnitude of tracking asymmetry, and phase lag, though the subjects' sex, handedness, and crossed hand-foot dominance were found to affect the relationships between schizotypy and tracking accuracy. These findings suggest that although control of SPEM may be predominantly right hemispheric, in some persons with a vulnerability to schizophrenia spectrum disorders, expressed as poorer overall SPEM accuracy and high schizotypy scores, left hemisphere-mediated (leftward) SPEM may be particularly impaired.

Manipulating the disengage operation of covert visual spatial attention

Processes of covert visual spatial attention have been closely linked to the programming of saccadic eye movements. In particular, it has been hypothesized that the reduction in saccadic latency that occurs in the gap paradigm is due to the prior disengagement of covert visual spatial attention. This explanation has received considerable criticism. No study as yet as attempted to demonstrate a facilitation of the disengagement of attention from a covertly attended object. If such facilitation were possible, it would support the hypothesis that the predisengagement of covert attention is necessary for the generation of express saccades. In two experiments using covert orienting of visual attention tasks (COVAT), with a high probability that targets would appear contralateral to the cued location, we attempted to facilitate the disengagement of covert attention by extinguishing peripheral cues prior to the appearance of targets. We hypothesized that the gap between cue offset and target onset would facilitate disengagement of attention from a covertly attended object. For both experiments, responses to targets appearing after a gap were slower than were responses in the no-gap condition. These results suggest that the prior offset of a covertly attended object does not facilitate the disengagement of attention.
