Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary chromium methionine (Cr-Met) supplementation on the production and immunological parameters of dairy cows during the dry and postpartum period and their offspring. Forty-five Holstein transition cows were randomly assigned to experimental groups with control, positive control (levamisole-injected cows), and treatment groups (5 g dietary Cr-Met/day/cow). Production, immunological, and biochemical parameters were analyzed during the dry and postpartum period. Result revealed that in dry cows, monocyte count and serum glucose level significantly (p < 0.05) decrease in Cr-supplemented cows over control. Similarly, after parturition, the numbers of all immune cells (except monocytes) decreased significantly (p < 0.05); however, serum IgG, ALT, AST, glucose levels, and total leucocyte, neutrophil, and leucocyte count were increased significantly (p < 0.05) in Cr-supplemented cows over the control group. Days in milk (DIM) of treatment cows were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased over the control group; however, no significant (p > 0.05) differences were observed on milk production, colostrum, and IgG concentrations. As a conclusion, the supplementation of Cr had positive effects on immune cells of cows after parturition; however, serum biochemical parameters remained unaffected. Also, there were significant differences on the number of total leucocyte and neutrophil, on the activity of ALT at birthday, and on the number of total leucocyte at postpartum for calves.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels of inorganic chromium (Cr) on nutrient intake, nutrient utilization, milk mineral contents, and blood biochemical in lactating Murrah buffaloes. Twenty-four multifarious Murrah buffaloes were blocked into four groups having six animals in each group and fed for 150 days post-partum. Feeding regimen was same in all the groups except that treatment groups were supplemented with 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mg inorganic Cr/kg dry matter (DM) in the four respective groups. Group fed on basal diet supplemented with 0.0 mg Cr/kg DM served as a control. Adding inorganic Cr to the diet of lactating buffaloes increased feed intake, milk yield, and nutrient digestibility. Nitrogen (N) and Cr balance were significantly increased (P<0.05) by adding Cr. Milk and plasma Cr concentration could be increased by adding Cr (P<0.001), while no significant differences were found between the four treatments in milk and plasma concentration of calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn). Feeding of diet supplemented with inorganic Cr decreased plasma insulin concentration (P=0.016). Concentration of blood glucose and the ratio of blood glucose to insulin were increased by adding Cr (P=0.037 and P=0.011, respectively). Adding Cr to the diet of lactating buffaloes did not show any effect on blood hemoglobin (Hb), while plasma concentration of progesterone and antioxidant status was increased (P<0.05). It could be concluded that adding Cr to the diet of lactating buffaloes improved nutrient intake, nutrient utilization, and lactation performance.

Abstract
Periparturient Murrah buffaloes were used to determine whether body condition, energy balance and immune status are affected by inorganic Cr supplementation. Twenty-four Murrah buffaloes were blocked into four groups having six animals in each group and fed for 60 days pre-partum to 150 days post-partum. Feeding regimen was same in all the groups except that these were supplemented with 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 of Cr per kilogram of dry matter (DM) in the four respective groups. Buffaloes were weighed at fortnightly intervals. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein at days -60, -30, -15, -7, 0, 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 of experimental feeding for the estimation of non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA), Cr level, lymphocyte proliferation, neutrophil phagocytic activity, plasma total immunoglobulin (TIg), immunoglobulin G (IgG) and cortisol levels. Results revealed that with approaching parturition, dry matter intake (DMI), immune response and plasma Cr level decreased (P < 0.05) gradually and minimum values were observed on the day of parturition in all groups. In contrast, body condition score (BCS), plasma NEFA and BHBA concentrations showed increasing (P < 0.05) trends towards calving and level decreased after calving. Dietary Cr supplementation did not have any effect on DMI and BCS, but immune response and plasma Cr concentration showed a positive correlation with dietary Cr supplementation. Buffaloes supplemented with 1.5 mg/kg Cr had significantly (P < 0.05) low plasma NEFA and BHBA concentrations. The results of present findings indicated that dietary inorganic Cr supplementation reduced lipid mobilization and improved immune response in periparturient buffaloes.

Abstract
We report the effects of supplemental chromium (Cr) on interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) expression in response to Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine in broiler chicken. Two hundred and eighty day old straight run broiler chicks were randomly selected and allocated at random to one of the seven treatment groups replicated four times having 10 chicks in each replication. Treatment 1 (C) was a standard control diet in which no Cr was offered to birds either through feed or drinking water. In treatments 2-4 (F500, F1000 and F1500), Cr in the form of chromium picolinate (CrPic) was added at rates of 500, 1000 and 1500 ppb in diets, respectively. In treatments 5-7 (W250, W500 and W750), Cr as added to the drinking water at rates of 250, 500 and 750 ppb, respectively. The feeding was continued from 1 to 49 d of age. On 49 d, three birds from each replicate, i.e. 12 birds/treatment were inoculated intramuscularly with R(2)B strain of NDV. Twelve unvaccinated birds along with 12 vaccinated birds from each treatment (four birds each day) were then sacrificed on 1, 3 and 7 days post-immunization to study the IFN-gamma expression using quantitative real time PCR. Following the immunization, the IFN-gamma mRNA expression in spleen was significantly (P<0.01) either up-regulated or down-regulated at day 1 and day 3 post-stimulation. Whereas, IFN-gamma mRNA expression reached basal level in all the vaccinated groups at day 7 post-stimulation. IFN-gamma mRNA expression on day 1 was approximately two and four times higher than the control (C) levels in F500 and W500 groups, respectively. On 3 day post-immunization, IFN-gamma mRNA expression in spleen was about 40 and 27 times higher than controls (C) in F500 and W500 groups, respectively. Other groups (F1000, F1500, W250 and W750) showed down-regulation of IFN-gamma mRNA expression. The results suggested that the dosage of chromium modulates the expression of IFN-gamma and route has effect on the onset and duration of the response. Thus, the supplementation of chromium at appropriate dose might be helpful to enhance the IFN-gamma mRNA expression in response to NDV.

Abstract
Nineteen multiparous late-pregnant dairy cows were divided into an experimental group (n = 10) and a control group (n = 9). Animals in the experimental group were fed a diet supplemented with chromium chelate admixed into wheat meal at 5 mg per animal per day. The supplementation was started 4 weeks before calving and stopped by the end of week 3 after calving. All the cows were vaccinated with tetanus toxoid in the fifth and sixth week of lactation. Monitoring of the characteristics of non-specific immunity did not show any significant between-group differences in total and differential leucocyte counts, percentages of lymphocyte subpopulations, activities of lectin-stimulated lymphocytes, phagocytic activities, and the contents of total immunoglobulins and lysozyme in blood sera. Tetanus toxoid-specific antibody titres, those of the IgG2 isotype in particular, were higher in the experimental group than in the control animals. These results indicate that chromium supplementation at the level used in this experiment modulated the regulation of functions of the immune system.

Abstract
Complex inter-relationships exist between certain micronutrients, immune function and disease resistance in cattle. Several micronutrients have been shown to influence immune responses. The relationship between deficiencies of some micronutrients and disease resistance is less clear. A number of studies have indicated that Cr supplementation may improve cell-mediated and humoral immune response as well as resistance to respiratory infections in stressed cattle. With respiratory-disease challenge models Cr generally does not affect disease resistance. Deficiencies of Cu, Se, vitamin E and Co in cattle reduce the ability of isolated neutrophils to kill yeast and/or bacteria. Cu deficiency reduces antibody production, but cell-mediated immunity is generally not altered. However, Cu deficiency appears to reduce production of interferon and tumour necrosis factor by mononuclear cells. Numerous studies have linked low vitamin E and/or Se status to increased susceptibility of dairy cows to intramammary infections. In contrast to findings in laboratory animals, marginal Zn deficiency does not appear to impair antibody production or lymphocyte responsiveness to mitogen stimulation in ruminants. Co deficiency has been associated with reduced resistance to parasitic infections. It is well documented that vitamin A-deficient animals are more susceptible to various types of infections. beta-Carotene, possibly via its antioxidant properties, may affect immune function and disease resistance independent of its role as a precursor of vitamin A.

Abstract
Forty-two Holstein calves were used to study performance and metabolic responses when milk replacer and then postweaning starter were supplemented with 1 ppm of Cr as Cr-tripicolinate. From birth through 8 wk of age, supplemental Cr tended to improve the growth performance of bull calves but not of heifer calves. Starter intake and feed efficiency were not affected by supplemental Cr. From 1 to 5 wk of age, plasma cortisol concentrations sampled just prior to feeding decreased, and concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I increased. All calves appeared to become less sensitive to insulin as they aged. From 1 to 5 wk of age, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations gradually diverged for all calves; glucose concentrations decreased, and insulin concentrations increased. In addition, glucose clearance rate, measured by i.v. glucose tolerance tests, was more rapid when calves were 2 wk of age than when calves were 8 wk of age. The glucose clearance rate was greater in heifer calves than in bull calves but was not affected by supplemental Cr. Entry of plasma glucose following an i.v. propionate load was also greater in heifer calves than in bull calves but was not affected by supplemental Cr. Plasma nonesterified fatty acids were lower in calves fed milk replacer or starter supplemented with Cr than in control calves, although this effect diminished as calves aged. This finding was considered to be indirect evidence of enhanced insulin sensitivity in calves fed milk replacer or starter supplemented with Cr. Overall, data suggested that supplemental Cr-tripicolinate had minor effects on the metabolism and growth performance of conventionally managed dairy calves. The most notable effects occurred during the initial few weeks of life.

Abstract
The purported performance-enhancing effects of supplemental Cr, as elaborated in studies focusing on beef and dairy cattle models of agricultural stress, affect both immune and endocrine pathways. Furthermore, interactions between the immune and endocrine systems, associated with the actions of insulin and cortisol, may be coordinated through the production of regulatory cytokines. Unlocking the mechanism of action of Cr as a useful farm animal management tool may provide further understanding of the health and performance ramifications of immune-endocrine interactions in agricultural species.

Abstract
This study determined whether supplementing the diets of dairy cows during the peripartum period with organic trivalent Cr influenced the capacity of their peripheral blood mononuclear cells to produce activation cytokines in response to stimulation with mitogens in vitro. Nine cows were fed 0.5 ppm of Cr/d per cow from 6 wk prepartum to 16 wk postpartum; 10 other periparturient cows served as unsupplemented controls. Mononuclear leukocytes, enriched from peripheral blood during wk 0, 2, 4, and 6 of lactation, were cultured with or without the T-lymphocyte mitogen, concanavalin A. Culture supernatants, harvested at 24, 48, or 72 h, were assayed for interleukin-2, interferon-gamma, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. The cytokines were barely detectable in the supernatants from the unstimulated cultures, but supernatants from mitogen-stimulated cultures contained higher concentrations of each cytokine. For cows fed Cr, concentrations of all three cytokines in the culture supernatants of the mitogen-stimulated mononuclear cells decreased significantly relative to values for unsupplemented cows, particularly around peak lactation for the 24- and 48-h cultures. Theses results extended our previous observations and supported the hypothesis that organic Cr is immunomodulatory in high producing cows.
