Abstract
This scientific opinion focuses on the welfare of pigs on farm, and is based on literature and expert opinion. All pig categories were assessed: gilts and dry sows, farrowing and lactating sows, suckling piglets, weaners, rearing pigs and boars. The most relevant husbandry systems used in Europe are described. For each system, highly relevant welfare consequences were identified, as well as related animal-based measures (ABMs), and hazards leading to the welfare consequences. Moreover, measures to prevent or correct the hazards and/or mitigate the welfare consequences are recommended. Recommendations are also provided on quantitative or qualitative criteria to answer specific questions on the welfare of pigs related to tail biting and related to the European Citizen's Initiative 'End the Cage Age'. For example, the AHAW Panel recommends how to mitigate group stress when dry sows and gilts are grouped immediately after weaning or in early pregnancy. Results of a comparative qualitative assessment suggested that long-stemmed or long-cut straw, hay or haylage is the most suitable material for nest-building. A period of time will be needed for staff and animals to adapt to housing lactating sows and their piglets in farrowing pens (as opposed to crates) before achieving stable welfare outcomes. The panel recommends a minimum available space to the lactating sow to ensure piglet welfare (measured by live-born piglet mortality). Among the main risk factors for tail biting are space allowance, types of flooring, air quality, health status and diet composition, while weaning age was not associated directly with tail biting in later life. The relationship between the availability of space and growth rate, lying behaviour and tail biting in rearing pigs is quantified and presented. Finally, the panel suggests a set of ABMs to use at slaughter for monitoring on-farm welfare of cull sows and rearing pigs.

Abstract
Simple Summary The Canadian pork industry is transitioning to group housing gestation. The Code of Practice for pigs recommends the provision of enrichment. Although straw is considered prime enrichment, it is perceived as a biosecurity risk and manure management issue; therefore, identifying other enrichment materials is needed to promote adequate welfare. Previously, our group examined the effects of four types of point-source enrichments in an Electronic Sow Feeding (ESF) system. This study is a continuation of our previous research applied in Free Access Stalls (FAS). Four treatments were studied: (1) Constant: constant provision of wood on chain; (2) Rotate: rotation of three enrichments (rope, straw, and wood on chain); (3) Stimulus: rotation of three enrichments with an associative stimulus (bell or whistle); and (4) Control: no enrichment. Contact with enrichment and time spent in different postures were measured using scan sampling. Skin lesions were scored, and salivary cortisol was measured in a subset of dominant and subordinate sows. Sows spent more time contacting straw compared to other types of enrichment. There was no difference in enrichment use between dominant and subordinate sows, no increase in cortisol concentrations in subordinates nor significant differences in aggression. In conclusion, sows preferred straw enrichment and FAS provided some protection against aggression and stress. Abstract Continuing with previous research by our group in an ESF system, four types of enrichment treatments were assessed in gestating sows housed in Free Access Stalls: (1) Constant: constant provision of wood on chain; (2) Rotate: rotation of rope, straw and wood; (3) Stimulus: rotation of enrichments with an acoustic cue; and (4) Control: no enrichment. Treatments had a 12 day-duration. Four groups (28 ± 2 sows) were studied from weeks 6 to 14 of gestation. Groups received all treatments in random order. Three dominant and 3 subordinates per pen were selected using a feed competition test. Digital photos were collected at 10 min intervals for 8 h on days 1, 8, 10 and 12 to record interactions with enrichment. Skin lesions were assessed on days 1 and 12, and salivary cortisol was assessed in weeks 6, 10 and 14 of gestation. More enrichment use was observed in Rotate and Stimulus treatments compared to Constant, and more sows contacted enrichment when straw was provided in the Rotate and Stimulus treatments. There was no difference in the amount of enrichment use by dominants and subordinates, no cortisol concentration elevation in subordinate sows nor any difference in lesion scores. In conclusion, social status had little impact and feeding system is important to reduce stress and aggression.

Abstract
Selection of appropriate housing conditions for sows is critical for their physical health and long-term reproductive success. The present objective was to evaluate the influences of housing system postweaning (i.e., individual stalls (IS) or group pens (GP)), season and parity on piglet productivity of sows in a commercial setting. This study utilized 3 053 Polish Large White×Polish Landrace sows that were weaned at a rate of 20-30 animals per week at the median age of 4 weeks; 1 474 sows were moved into GP of seven to eight animals each, while 1 579 were placed in IS after weaning. Starting 2 days postweaning all animals were checked for estrus with a teaser boar and then artificially inseminated using 3×109 spermatozoa per dose of an inseminate at the onset of heat and 24 h later. The proportion of sows showing the signs of standing heat at or before 6 days postweaning was greater (P < 0.05) for sows moved to GP compared with IS; this difference manifested mainly in second parity sows weaned in the summer and fall. Conception and farrowing rates were significantly higher (P < 0.01) and the weaning-to-estrus interval shorter in GP compared with IS sows in every season but autumn. Mean litter size was lower (P < 0.05) in IS groups in summer, autumn, and winter, and the number of live-born piglets/sow was lower (P < 0.05) for IS sows in the summer and fall. Beneficial effects of group housing on piglet productivity manifested up until the seventh consecutive farrowing and then began to wane. In summary, there was a significantly greater proportion of sows going estrus "on time" (i.e., <7 days) in group housing compared to single stalls but this effect was confined to the second parity sows during the summer and fall months; these results suggest the existence of a seasonal and age-related aspect to sow fertility worthy of further investigation. While both housing systems have their pros and cons, our present results indicate that, in commercial settings, group housing postweaning improved nearly all reproductive parameters of sows.

Abstract
The present study assessed the diurnal variation in salivary cortisol in captive African elephants during routine management (baseline) and in relation to a potential stressor (translocation) to evaluate to what extent acute stress may affect diurnal cortisol patterns. Under baseline conditions, we collected morning and afternoon saliva samples of 10 animals (three zoos) on different days in two study periods (n = 3-10 per animal, daytime and period). Under stress conditions, we sampled the transported cow (newcomer) and the two cows of the destination zoo before and after the transport in the morning and afternoon (n = 3-9 per animal, daytime and transport phase), as well as after the first introduction of the newcomer to the bull (n = 1 per animal). Cortisol was measured in unextracted samples by enzyme immunoassay. Under baseline conditions, we observed the expected diurnal variation with higher cortisol levels in the morning than in the afternoon. Under stress conditions, neither a significant difference between pre- and posttransport, nor between morning and afternoon levels was found. The percentage difference between morning and afternoon cortisol after the transport, however, was remarkably lower than before the transport in the newcomer potentially indicating a stress response to familiarization. Saliva samples taken immediately after the introduction of the newcomer to the bull revealed a marked cortisol increase. Our findings indicate that stressors may disturb the diurnal cortisol rhythm. Furthermore, provided that samples can be collected promptly, salivary cortisol is a useful minimally invasive measure of physiological stress in the African elephant.

The goal of this study was to identify practical enrichments for sows in partially or fully slatted pen systems. Four treatments were applied: (1) Constant: constant provision of wood on chain; (2) Rotate: rotation of rope, straw and wood enrichments; (3) Stimulus: rotation of enrichments (as in Rotate) with an associative stimulus (bell or whistle); and (4) Control: no enrichment, with each treatment lasting 12 days. Six groups of 20 ± 2 sows were studied from weeks 6 to 14 of gestation in pens with one electronic sow feeder. Each group received all treatments in random order. Six focal animals (3 dominant and 3 subordinate) were selected per pen using a feed competition test. Digital photos were collected at 10 min intervals for 8 h (between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.) on 4 days/treatment (d 1, 8, 10 and 12) to record interactions with enrichment. Skin lesions were assessed on days 1 and 12, and saliva cortisol samples collected in weeks 6, 10 and 14 of gestation on focal pigs. Sows spent more time in contact with enrichments in Rotate and Stimulus treatments than Constant. Enrichment treatments did not influence lesion scores. Subordinate sows spent more time standing and near enrichments than dominants. Subordinate sows also received more skin lesions and had higher salivary cortisol concentrations than dominants. These results indicate that access to enrichment is valued by sows but can result in greater aggression directed towards subordinates.

Abstract
The present review using the pig as a model has highlighted the importance of the design of the housing system on the welfare of farm animals. It has emphasised the need for research on animal welfare in new and modified housing systems, as well as current but contentious systems, to be attentive to the design contributions of these systems to animal welfare. The review has highlighted areas for future research to safeguard sow and piglet welfare, including the following: effective environmental enrichment for gestating sows in intensive, indoor and non-bedded systems; opportunities to increase foraging and feeding times in feed-restricted gestating sows; design features that allow both access to important resources, such as feed, water and a comfortable lying area, and escape opportunities to reduce aggression and minimise risks to the welfare of group-housed sows; and less confined farrowing and lactation systems. The review also shows that animal welfare problems may be less a function of the type of housing system than of how well it operates. The skills, knowledge and motivation of stockpeople to effectively care for and manage their animals are integral to the standard of welfare experienced by their animals. Attitudes influence not only the manner in which stockpeople handle animals, but also their motivation to care for their animals. Thus, training targeting technical skills and knowledge as well as the attitudes and behaviours of stockpeople should be a primary component of the human resource management practices at a farm. While public concerns and policy debates often focus on intensive housing systems, research indicates that the design and management of both indoor and outdoor housing systems is probably more important for animal welfare than is generally recognised.

Abstract
Factors that have been shown to impact the welfare of group-housed sows are discussed in this review. Floor space allowance markedly affects sow welfare. In addition to quantity of floor space, the quality of space is important: spatial separation between sows can be provided with visual or physical barriers and stalls. Whereas 1.4 m/sow is insufficient, further research is required to examine space effects in the range of 1.8 to 2.4 m/sow in more detail. The period immediately after mixing has the most pronounced effects on aggression and stress, and therefore, well-designed mixing pens offer the opportunity to reduce aggression, injury, and stress while allowing the social hierarchy to quickly form. Because hunger is likely to lead to competition for feed or access to feeding areas, strategies to reduce hunger between meals through higher feeding levels, dietary fiber, or foraging substrate should be examined. However, feeding systems, such as full-body feeding stalls, can also affect aggression and stress by providing protection at feeding, but deriving conclusions on this topic is difficult because research directly comparing floor feeding, feeding stalls, and electronic sow feeder systems has not been conducted. Familiar sows engage in less aggression, so mixing sows that have been housed together in the previous gestation may reduce aggression. Although there is evidence in other species that early experience may affect social skills later in life, there are few studies on the effects of early "socialization" on aggressive behavior of adult sows. Genetic selection has the potential to reduce aggression, and therefore, continued research on the opportunity to genetically select against aggressiveness and its broader implications is required. Most research to date has examined mixing sows after insemination and knowledge on grouping after weaning is limited.

Abstract
Ninety-six multiparous sows were randomly assigned into 2 different gestation housing systems on d 35 of gestation: individual gestational crates (n = 24) or small groups with 3 sows in gestational pens (n = 24). Sows were classified into 4 treatments based on gestation housing systems and social ranks within each gestational pen: sows housed in individual gestational crates were in control treatment (CON), and sows destined to high, middle, or low social ranks within each pen were classified into high social rank treatment (HR), middle social rank treatment (MR), and low social rank treatment (LR). The social rank of sows within a pen was determined by their winning percentage during aggressive interactions observed for a 4-d period after mixing on d 35 of gestation. Plasma samples collected from each sow on d 35, 60, 90, and 109 of gestation and d 1 and 18 of lactation were used to determine concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyls, 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), IgG, and IgM. Sows in HR had higher (P < 0.05) body weight during gestation and lactation, smallest (P < 0.05) litter weight at birth, increased (P < 0.05) number of stillborn than sows in MR and LR, and tended to have decreased (P = 0.073, P = 0.064) number of born alive compared with sows in CON and LR. Sows in LR had lower farrowing rate compared with sows in MR. Plasma concentration of protein carbonyl in HR was higher (P < 0.05) than that in MR on d 3 of lactation. Plasma concentrations of 8-OHdG in LR was greater (P < 0.05) than that in HR on d 90 of gestation, d 3 and 18 of lactation, and greater (P < 0.05) than CON on d 18 of lactation. The reproductive performance of sows from all of the social ranks was related to their oxidative stress status during gestation and lactation. Collectively, the reproductive performance, oxidative stress status, and immune status did not differ between sows housed in gestational crates (CON) and pens (HR + MR + LR). Sows in CON and MR did not show inferior reproductive performance during gestation and lactation. Sows in HR and LR had increased oxidative damage during late gestation and lactation which could contribute to the reduced litter size and litter weight in HR and lower farrowing rate in LR.

Abstract
From 1.1.2013 EU legislation will permit stall-housing of dry sows for only 4 weeks post-service. Stalls are associated with compromised animal welfare, but group housing comes with risks from social confrontations. Studies on housing effects on fertility have produced contradictory results as systems are inconsistently defined. Effects of housing on pregnancy rate 28 days post-service (P28), early disruption of pregnancy (EDP) and behaviour were investigated in 12 replicates of 40 sows. Half of the animals were stalled (treatment S, mean parity 2.4) and half group-housed adjacent on 5.1 m(2) deep litter per sow (treatment G, mean parity 2.3). Pregnancy was detected using real-time ultrasound. An EDP-diagnosis required a drop of salivary progesterone concentration from >15.9 to <15.9 mmol/l in a series of samples taken on days 17, 20, 24 and 27 post-service. Behaviour was scan sampled on day 27 for 120 min with 10-min intervals. Data was analysed using mixed regression models in MLwiN. Treatment S increased the odds for P28 with 2.3 and the pregnancy rate of a treatment group with 0.1 compared with G. G increased the odds for EDP with 4.6. Treatment did not affect total exploratory or total passive behaviour. S sows explored floor and fixtures (not bedding) more and performed more passive sitting than G sows. Social stress may have caused the impaired reproductive performance in G sows. S sows showed behavioural signs of decreased welfare, but no corresponding reproductive effects. An interdisciplinary approach is needed when evaluating the appropriateness of housing systems.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of continuous elevated cortisol concentrations during standing oestrus on time of ovulation and patterns of progesterone, oestradiol and luteinising hormone (LH) in sows. The elevation of cortisol concentrations was achieved through repeated intravenous injections of synthetic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) every 2 h for approximately 48 h, from the onset of the second standing oestrus after weaning. Treatment was terminated when ovulation was detected (monitored by transrectal ultrasonography every 4h) or when the sow had received a maximum of 24 injections. The dose of ACTH (2.5 microg/kg) was chosen to mimic the cortisol concentrations seen during mixing of unfamiliar sows. The sows (n=14) were surgically fitted with jugular vein catheters and randomly divided into a control (C group where only NaCl solution were injected) or an ACTH group. Blood samples were collected every 2 h. In parallel with the blood sampling, saliva samples for cortisol analyses were taken from eight sows before onset of treatment and from four of the sows during treatment. There was no difference in time from onset of standing oestrus to ovulation between the two groups. The interval between the peaks of oestradiol and LH to ovulation was prolonged in the ACTH group compared to the C group (p<0.05), with a tendency towards an earlier decline of oestradiol in the ACTH group. Cortisol and progesterone concentrations were significantly elevated during treatment in the ACTH group (p<0.001), with cortisol peak concentrations occurring between 40 and 80 min after each ACTH injection. Cortisol concentrations in saliva and plasma were highly correlated (p<0.001). In conclusion, elevated cortisol concentrations from the onset of standing oestrus increase progesterone concentrations and prolong the interval between oestradiol and LH peaks to ovulation, the latter possible due to an early decline in oestradiol concentrations and a change of the LH peak outline. The effect these hormonal changes have on reproductive performance need to be further investigated. Saliva samples might be a useful and non-invasive method to assess cortisol concentrations in sows.

Abstract
Sows housed in freely moving groups have elevated cortisol levels until the rank order is established, which takes place within approximately 48 h. The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of repeated administration of synthetic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH; Synacthen Depot), during the follicular phase (pro-oestrus) on oestrus, ovulation and endocrine parameters. Four multiparous sows were used. Follicular growth and ovulation were recorded by ultrasonography. The first oestrous cycle after weaning was used as control cycle. Onset of oestrus in the sow occurs 3-4 days after the time when plasma progesterone reaches a concentration of 8 nmol/l. The progesterone profile in the control cycle of the individual sow was used for estimation when the ACTH injections should start. In the third pro-oestrus ACTH (2.5 microg/kg) was given via an indwelling catheter every 2 h for 48 h. The sows were euthanased 4-6 days after onset of the third oestrus and the ovaries were examined. Cortisol levels were elevated during the treatment period (p < 0.05). The second cycle, in which the sows were injected with ACTH, was prolonged with 2.5 days compared with the control cycle (p < 0.05). The oestradiol pattern during oestrus was similar in the control and the treatment cycle in ovulating sows. Three sows had ovulated (fresh corpora lutea), but the ovaries contained additionally one or several luteinized follicles/cysts. In conclusion, ACTH administration during pro-oestrus caused a prolongation of the oestrous cycle and a disturbed follicular development.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine if the social status of Australian Cashmere goats affects their response to the male effect in terms of LH secretion, ovulation and expression of estrus. Australian Cashmere goats were kept isolated from the males during 5 months. The index of success (SI) of each goat was calculated to establish their social rank. In the first experiment, the ten most dominant and the 10 most subordinate goats were separated from the original herd and housed in two pens (5 dominant and 5 subordinate animals in each pen). An androgenized wether was then introduced into each pen. Luteinizing hormone (LH) was measured every 20 min from 2h before to 4h after introduction of the male in the goats of first pen and from 4 to 8h after male introduction in the second pen. In the second experiment, the remaining 50 goats were exposed in their original pen to two androgenized wethers. Their association index with the males (AI) was calculated for each of these 50 goats, and the intervals from exposure to the males to the onset of estrus and to ovulation were determined. During the first 4h after male introduction, the dominant goats had more LH pulses (0.65+/-0.06 compared with 0.3+/-0.09; P<0.05) and greater LH mean concentrations (1.79+/-0.14 ng/ml compared with 1.30+/-0.15 ng/ml, P=0.05) than the subordinate animals. Although not significantly different, the AI was 35% greater for high and medium ranking goats than for low ranking animals (0.031+/-0.004, 0.032+/-0.005 and 0.023+/-0.005, respectively, P>0.05). Although the number of goats ovulating in response to male exposure was similar between dominance groups (high: 100%, medium: 94% and low ranking: 92%), the high and medium dominance goats showed a greater incidence of expression of estrus than low-dominance goats (94.4%, 89.5% and 53.8%, respectively, P<0.05). It is concluded that the social rank of the Australian Cashmere goat influences their response to the male effect in terms of early LH secretion and expression of estrus.

Abstract
It is generally assumed that stress around oestrus and during early pregnancy reduces reproductive performance of pigs. In our experiment, late prepuberal gilts (age at arrival 225+/-6 days) were housed in groups of four. Stress treatment consisted of once weekly regrouping and twice weekly feed competition of the 28 Stress gilts during 6 consecutive weeks, starting 13 days after arrival. Control gilts (n=28) were not treated. During the 0.5-1.5h after regroupings, Stress animals fought consistently more than the Control animals; up to 13 of the Stress animals fought for at most 60% of the time compared to one Control animal fighting for at most 3.3% of the time. The day before first regrouping, gilts had on average 4.0+/-0.9 skin scratches. By week 6, this number had reduced to 2.1+/-1.0 in Control, but remained 4.0+/-1.3 in Stress gilts (P<0.05). In the afternoon after regroupings, skin scratches increased up to 6.3+/-1.6 in the Stress gilts. Saliva cortisol in the afternoon before regrouping did not differ between weeks 1, 3 and 6, nor did it differ between Stress and Control. In Stress gilts, saliva cortisol was increased in the afternoon of first regrouping, in Batch 2 only (from 1.8+/-0.4 to 4.1+/-0.9 ng/ml; P<0.05). Animals showing a second oestrus within 5 weeks after arrival were inseminated. Duration of second oestrus of these animals was 2.48+/-0.66 days in the Stress gilts (n=24) and 2.21+/-0.58 days in the Control gilts (n=22; P>0.10). At Day 35 after insemination, pregnancy rate was 100% in both groups. Ovulation rate and number of total and vital fetuses was similar (P>0.10). The Stress treatment during a 6-week period around insemination consistently resulted in fighting but did not result in long term effects on cortisol levels and did not impair reproductive performance.

Abstract
In this paper, the authors review the effects of boar contact and different components of boar presence on onset and expression of estrus in weaned sows. Evidence is presented that boar contact may influence LH release, onset of follicle development and timing of ovulation after weaning. Once the sow is in estrus it is important that she shows estrous behavior, because her expression of estrus determines whether she will be inseminated. Boar contact or components thereof affect expression of estrus in sows. There are distinct differences between different components of boar contact in their effectiveness in the induction of estrous behavior (standing response) in sows. Habituation to boars (due to frequency of boar contact or housing of boars near sows) also affects estrus expression in sows. It is important to inseminate sows at the correct moment relative to ovulation. The use of different estrus detection protocols (e.g., by giving sows different levels of boar stimuli during estrus detection) may result in the definition of distinct periods of estrus that may help to predict the moment of ovulation. However, results to date are not very encouraging. Besides boar stimuli, the housing conditions of sows may affect onset of estrus and estrus expression. This paper focuses on social sow-to-sow interactions. The effects of group housing (as compared to individual housing) on onset of estrus and expression of estrus are equivocal. These effects likely depend on factors like aggression between pen mates, reproductive status of pen mates and social rank of sows within the group.

Abstract
The influence of social subordination on sexual motivation during oestrus was studied using 36 sows of which 24 treatment sows were housed in pairs and 12 control sows were housed individually in 12 and 6 m(2) pens, respectively. Video recordings were made from 07:00 h to 19:00 h during the first 2 days after grouping, which took place 3 days after weaning of the piglets. Based on the aggressive interactions between the pair-housed sows, their rank was determined. From day 4 after weaning, a test for sexual proceptive behaviour was carried out twice daily and back-pressure test was carried out four times daily in order to detect standing oestrus. When standing oestrus had occurred, transrectal ultrasonographical scans were also carried out in order to determine if ovulation took place. The proceptivity test took place in a T-maze with a 2 m x 10 m runway ending in two 1.5 m x 1.5 m goal boxes each adjacent to a stimulus compartment. One compartment contained an adult sexually experienced boar and the other was empty. Latency to and duration of time spent close to the boar and time spent presenting were recorded during the 10-min test period. On the first day that standing oestrus had been detected, a test for sexual receptivity was also carried out by introducing the sow to a mature boar in his home pen (9 m(2)). Sexual- and fear-related behaviour of sow and boar were recorded until mating was terminated or the sow had spent 5 min in the pen without mating being initiated. During oestrus the proceptivity test showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the time spent standing close to the boar and in presenting for single-housed sows and for pair-housed dominant sows, but not for subordinate sows. During oestrus subordinate sows spent significantly less time standing close to the boar than the dominant sows (P = 0.01) and the same tended to be the case for presenting (P = 0.07). In the receptivity test more subordinate sows than dominant sows fled (40% versus 0%, P = 0.001) and more subordinate sows than dominant sows squealed (58% versus 15%, P = 0.02) as a response to boar stimulation. In both tests, the single-housed sows differed neither from the dominant nor the subordinate sows. There was however no difference between the groups in the weaning to oestrous interval, duration of oestrus and number of piglet born. In addition, all the sows ovulated. The results indicate that social subordination can have significant consequences for sexual motivation in sows. Subordinate sows showed fear-related behaviour in response to boar stimulation even when they were in standing oestrus. Thus, both heat detection and mating may be impaired in subordinate sows. The results emphasise the importance to alleviate the social stress experienced by subordinates as well as the need for stock people to pay special attention to these animals when they are to be mated or inseminated.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of post-ovulatory food deprivation on the hormonal profiles and consequently on the activity of the oviduct and ova transport in sows. Sows were randomly allocated to the control (C-group, n=6) or fasted (F-group, n=5) group. The F-group sows were fasted for four meals starting with the morning meal after detection of ovulation in the second oestrus after weaning. Ovulation was checked by transrectal ultrasonography. Blood was collected for the analyses of progesterone, oestradiol-17beta, prostaglandin F(2 approximately ) metabolite, insulin, free fatty acids and triglycerides. Oviductal isthmic motility was monitored on Polyview before and after ovulation until the time of slaughter. After slaughter, the isthmus opposite the side with transducer was divided into three equal segments and flushed separately and a third of the uterine horn part from the utero-tubal-junction (UTJ) was also flushed. A high proportion of ova in the F-group was found in the first and second parts of the isthmus. In the C-group, a high proportion of ova was found in the third part of the isthmus and the uterus. The mean isthmic pressure in the C-group decreased significantly (P<0.05) during the period immediately after ovulation while in the F-group mean pressure remained unchanged. The frequency of phasic pressure fluctuations were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the F- than in the C-group 13 to 24 h after ovulation. No significant differences in progesterone concentrations were seen between the two groups of sows. Prostaglandin metabolite levels were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the F-group than in the C-group. Oestradiol-17beta levels significantly (p<0.05) decreased earlier in the F- than in the C-group. Serum insulin levels were significantly (p=0.05) lower in the F- than in the C-group while free fatty acids were significantly (p<0.01) higher in the F- than in the C-group. There were no significant differences in the serum levels of triglycerides between the F- and the C-group. Therefore, it can be concluded in the present study that food deprivation is associated with changes in the hormonal profiles, activity of the oviduct and a delay of ova transport in sows.

Over a period of approx. 15 months, post-mortem (PM) examinations were made on genital organs (34 gilts and 81 sows) from a sow-pool with reproductive disturbances. Anamnestic data on the animals included information about parity number, date of farrowing, dates of weaning, oestrus and service, and cause of culling. At the PM examination, the macroscopic appearance of the ovaries (follicles, corpora lutea, cysts) and uterus (content, endometrium) were studied. Specimens from the endometrium was examined histologically. The most common reason for culling was repeat breeding (67%), in most cases at irregular intervals. The non-productive period averaged 82 days in sows (weaning to slaughter) and 151 days in gilts (from 1st day of mating until slaughter). In 49.6% of the sows no pathological changes were found. Macroscopic examination of the ovaries in 108 animals showed that 69% were cycling normally, 17% were anoestral and 14% had multiple follicular cysts (7 animals were not included due to ovo-testis [1 case], pregnancy [3 cases] and with signs of recent abortion [3 cases]). As judged from the histological examination, 27% of the animals had endometritis, which was classified as mild in 50% of them. Anoestral animals had a higher incidence of endometritis (61%) than animals showing cyclic ovarian activity (19%). This indicates that ovarian inactivity is of importance for the development of endometritis. It was concluded that post-mortem examination of genital organs from animals with reproductive problems is a valuable diagnostic tool. The anamnestic data together with the PM results indicated that management routines (oestrous detection, insemination, grouping at early pregnancy) needed to be changed.

Abstract
The present study describes an experiment that was carried out to study the effects of mixing pigs once at 25 kg, preceded by transportation for 1.5 h, on the behavior and the circadian rhythmicity of salivary cortisol. The frequency of agonistic interactions was higher for mixed pigs. This was not only the case immediately after mixing, when pigs started to fight to establish a new social rank (p < 0.05), but also 5 to 6 weeks later; still more headknocks and bites towards other pigs were seen at that time among mixed pigs (p < 0.01). However, neither the basal cortisol concentration, assessed as the MESOR of the circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol, nor the amplitude of that rhythm was different between the groups.

Abstract
The effect of group housing sows during early pregnancy on maternal endocrine changes and on embryonic survival was studied. Twenty crossbred (Swedish Yorkshire x Swedish Landrace) primiparous sows were used. On day 11 +/- 1 of pregnancy 3 unacquainted sows were randomly assigned to a single pen measuring 3 m x 3 m in area. A fourth sow in each group was housed in an individual pen and used as a control. This procedure was repeated 5 times to collect data from 5 animals in each rank as well as in a control group. Blood samples were collected from the day before grouping to day 5 after grouping for cortisol, corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG), progesterone (P4), oestradiol-17 beta (E2) and prostaglandin F2 alpha metabolite (PG-metabolite) analysis. A rank-order test and an ACTH test were performed on day 4 and day 5 of grouping respectively. The sows were slaughtered on day 17 +/- 1 of pregnancy and embryos recovered. Aggression accompanied by elevations (p < 0.05) in cortisol concentrations occurred in all grouped sows on the first day of grouping. The cortisol increase was greater (p < 0.01) in the subordinate than in the other ranked sows. Cortisol concentrations and the level of aggression decreased on subsequent days during grouping, but the cortisol levels were still higher than on the pre-grouping day except for the intermediate ranked sows. Cortisol concentrations after the ACTH test were similar in the grouped as well as the control sows. The dominance hierarchy was confirmed during the rank order test. Concentrations of P4, E2, PG-metabolite and CBG were similar between the group-housed sows and with the controls. Mean embryonic recovery was 66.8% +/- 11.5%, 71.3% +/- 6.0%, 70.0% +/- 16.0%, and 69.9% +/- 5.8% for the dominant, intermediate, subordinate, and control sows respectively. Hence, group housing during early pregnancy did not influence reproductive hormones or embryonic survival.

Abstract
Single and population-mean cosinor analyses document a circadian rhythm in salivary cortisol of pigs (p < 0.001). The midline estimated statistic of rhythm, the MESOR (M), is 1.50 +/- 0.07 ng/ml. For the group of 14 pigs studied there was a predictable variation of 64% around this mean in salivary cortisol within a day: the double circadian amplitude, 2A, was 0.96 ng/ml, with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 0.60 to 1.32 ng/ml. A measure of timing, the acrophase, phi, was 10 h 52 min from the phase reference (0030, the middle of the daily dark span of the 24-h light-dark cycle in which the pigs were kept). The 95% confidence interval of phi extended from 9 h 48 min to 12 h 12 min from the reference time. The chronobiologic approach provides indispensable quantitive characteristics as reference standards for future basic or applied work.
