Diclidophora merlangi (Kuhn, 1829) Krøyer, 1838 (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) as an indicator of hydrocarbon pollution in the North Sea

This study presents the results of analyses of data on infections of 2646 whiting Merlangius merlangus with the monogenean Diclidophora merlangi. All fish were caught in the North Sea and off the north coast of Scotland in 1990, 1993 and 1995. The aims were to analyse these data in relation to the locations of whiting sampling stations and oil installations active at that time, and to evaluate the results in terms of D. merlangi as an indicator of hydrocarbon pollution. Mean abundance of D. merlangi increased significantly with increasing proximity to the nearest oil field, with an accelerated rate of increase within approximately 2 km of the oil field. Age of oil field and whiting length showed no significant effect on parasite abundance, but there was a small difference between years. The results support those of previous studies in demonstrating the value of monogeneans as indicators of hydrocarbon pollution.

Effects of water quality and trophic status on helminth infections in the cyprinid fish, Schizothorax niger Heckel, 1838 from three lakes in the Kashmir Himalayas

Water quality greatly influences the population density of aquatic biota, including parasites. In order to evaluate the relationship between fish parasites and water quality in Kashmir Himalayas, we assessed helminth parasite densities in Schizothorax niger Heckel, 1838 (an endemic cyprinid fish of Kashmir) from three lakes, namely Anchar, Manasbal and Dal, which reflected the varied stages of eutrophication. The overall prevalence of helminth infections was higher in the hypertrophic Anchar Lake (prevalence = 18.6%) compared to Manasbal Lake, which was the least eutrophied (prevalence = 6.4%). Furthermore, mean prevalence of monoxenous and heteroxenous parasites was higher in lakes containing higher levels of water degradation (Anchar and Dal). The mean number of helminth species per fish host was the highest in the hypertrophic lake (1.3 ± 0.3) in comparison to the least eutrophic lake (0.2 ± 1.5). Variability of calculated infection indices (prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance) revealed that helminth parasite composition in the fish was affected by the lakes' environmental stress (degraded water quality). Therefore, data on the density of helminth parasites in fish can provide supplementary information on the pollution status of a water body.

Parasite communities in Boops boops (L.) (Sparidae) after the Prestige oil-spill: detectable alterations

Environmental pollution affects parasite populations and communities, both directly and through effects on intermediate and final hosts. In this work, we present a comparative study on the structure and composition of metazoan parasite communities in the bogue, Boops boops, from two localities (Galician coast, Spain) affected by the Prestige oil-spill (POS). We focus on the distribution of both individual parasite species and larger functional groupings by using both univariate and multivariate analyses. Our results indicate directional trends in community composition that might be related to the Prestige oil-spill disturbance of the natural coastal communities off Galicia. Endoparasite communities in B. boops reflected a notable change in the composition and abundance of the benthic fauna in the localities studied post-spill probably due to organic enrichment after the POS.

Environmental parasitology: What can parasites tell us about human impacts on the environment?

There are a variety of ways that environmental changes affect parasites, suggesting that information on parasites can indicate anthropogenic impacts. Parasitism may increase if the impact reduces host resistance or increases the density of intermediate or definitive hosts. Parasitism may decrease if definitive or intermediate host density declines or parasites suffer higher mortality directly (eg. from toxic effects on parasites) or indirectly (infected hosts suffer differentially high mortality). Although these scenarios are opposing, they can provide a rich set of predictions once we understand the true associations between each parasite and impact. In this review, Kevin Lafferty discusses how parasite ecologists have used and can use parasites to assess environmental quality.

Toxic pollution and parasitism in freshwater fish

As aquatic habitats throughout the world are increasingly contaminated with toxic chemicals, toxicologist strive to determine what impact these substances will have an biological systems. So far, the effects of this type of pollution on fish parasites has received little attention, despite their important status as determinants of fish health. Robert Poulin discusses the many ways in which toxic pollution may affect infections of metazoan parasites in freshwater fish. Effects on fish immunity, parasites survival and intermediate host populations are not independent, and currently the outcome of toxic pollution and parasitism in fish is impossible to predict. Future research will have to answer several questions if we are to understand and forecast pollution-mediated changes in parasitism, an urgent challenge for ecotoxicologists and fish parasitologists alike.

Influence of pollution on parasites of aquatic animals

We have tried to draw attention to an increasing body of evidence (from several publications) that parasites of fish might be useful indicators of pollution. Several types of pollutants, including domestic sewage, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, heavy metals, pulp and paper effluents, petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons, acid rain, and others, are known to affect aquatic animals. Many of the latter are parasitized and, under natural environmental conditions, most fish parasites are believed to cause little or no harm. However, chronic exposure to pollutants over a period of time causes biochemical, physiological and behavioural host changes that ultimately can influence the prevalence and intensity of parasitism. Some of these changes include host nutrition, growth and reproduction. Macroscopic lesions might not always be apparent, but subtle disorders in several specific tissues and organs might occur. Pollutants might promote increased parasitism in aquatic animals, especially fish, by impairing the host's immune response or favouring the survival and reproduction of the intermediate hosts. Alternatively, decreased parasitism might ensue through toxicity of the pollutant to free-living stages and intermediate hosts or by alteration of the host's physiology. Experimental studies indicate that the numbers of ectoparasites such as trichodinid ciliates and monogeneans increase significantly on the gills following exposure to a pollutant, and this is supported by field data on other ciliates and monogeneans where evidence of pollution has been clearly demonstrated. There is also evidence that endoparasitic protozoons, such as myxozoons, microsporans and haematozoons, all of which are capable of proliferating in their hosts, increase substantially in prevalence and intensity when interacting with pollutants. The period of patency might also be prolonged in haematozoan infections. Most reports of pollution effects on endoparasites suggest increased parasitism in fish hosts. This also applies to fish living in areas which receive thermal effluents. Parasites might in turn enhance their hosts' susceptibility to pollutants, and information in support of this view is accumulating. Finally, immunosuppression represents one of the underlying mechanisms influencing increased parasitism. Thus, while published information suggests more than a casual connection between fish parasites and pollution, further research is needed to establish the cause-and-effect relationship and at the same time take cognizance of histopathological effects of the toxic agents and their concentrations in water. Areas for future research are recommended.

Xenobiotic metabolism in helminths

During its life cycle a parasite, like mammals and other organisms, comes into contact with a variety of toxic molecules. In mammals the main line of defence against such compounds is a group of oxidative enzymes that occur predominantly in the liver. Many of these oxidations are dependent on the haemoprotein cytochrome P-450 which serves as a terminal oxidase accepting electrons from NADPH and cytochrome [Formula: see text] . This review by Wendy Precious and John Barrett illustrates that in contrast to mammals, xenobiotic metabolism in both parasitic and free-living platyhelminths and nematodes is predominantly reductive and hydrolytic as the cytochrome P-450 system is absent. This is surprising since it is present in many groups including bacteria, fungi and protozoa, which suggests an ancient origin. The absence of the cytochrome P-450 system not only severely limits the ability of helminths to detoxify compounds but also limits their ability to activate prodrugs.
