The associations of linear alkyl benzenes with the bulk properties of sediments from the River Mersey Estuary

Study of contaminant transport at an open-tipping waste disposal site

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to estimate concentration of potential contaminants from landfill in the underlying groundwater, leachate, and surface water. Samples collected in the vicinity of the landfill were analyzed for physiochemical parameters, organic contaminants, and toxic heavy metals. Water quality results obtained were compared from published data and reports. The results indicate serious groundwater and surface water contamination in and around the waste disposal site. Analysis of the organic samples revealed that the site contains polychlorinated biphenyls and other organo-chlorine chemicals, principally chloro-benzenes. Although the amount of PCB concentration discovered was not extreme, their presence indicates a potentially serious environmental threat. Elevated concentrations of lead, copper, nickel, manganese, cadmium, and cobalt at the downgradient indicate that the contamination plume migrated further from the site, and the distribution of metals and metals containing wastes in the site is nonhomogeneous. These results clearly indicate that materials are poorly contained and are at risk of entering the environment. Therefore, full characterization of the dump contents and the integrity of the site are necessary to evaluate the scope of the problem and to identify suitable remediation options.

Dioxin chronology and fluxes in sediments of the Houston Ship Channel, Texas: influences of non-steady-state sediment transport and total organic carbon

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (dioxins) are persistent contaminants that bioaccumulate and pose serious risks to humans. The primary objective of this study was to determine the history and mechanisms of dioxin accumulation in sediments of the Houston Ship Channel (HSC) using analytical data on natural and anthropogenic radionuclides (7Be, 137Cs, and 210Pb) and dioxins. Results showed that present-day sedimentary dioxin accumulation rates are orders of magnitude higher than atmospheric inputs to the HSC. Most stations showed dioxin peaks in the near surface, indicating continuing inputs despite federal regulations. Stations with high dioxin inventories reflect accentuated accumulation in the HSC as one moves west toward Houston, at the confluence of the HSC and the San Jacinto River and upstream in the San Jacinto River. These results indicate that a significant quantity of dioxins continues to be released into the environment here or that sedimentary storage and release of previously supplied dioxins is significant, or both. The results support the interpretation that the HSC is influenced by episodic sediment resuspension, erosion and lateral transport processes driven by tides, wind, shipping, and dredging, which can cause intermittently high accumulations of dioxins, and underscores the need for additional research on the roles of sedimentary processes in organic contaminant bioavailability.

Octanol-solubility of dissolved and particulate trace metals in contaminated rivers: implications for metal reactivity and availability

The lipid-like, amphiphilic solvent, n-octanol, has been used to determine a hydrophobic fraction of dissolved and particulate trace metals (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) in contaminated rivers. In a sample from the River Clyde, southwest Scotland, octanol-solubility was detected for all dissolved metals except Co, with conditional octanol-water partition coefficients, D(ow), ranging from about 0.2 (Al and Cu) to 1.25 (Pb). In a sample taken from the River Mersey, northwest England, octanol-solubility was detected for dissolved Al and Pb, but only after sample aliquots had been spiked with individual ionic metal standards and equilibrated. Spiking of the River Clyde sample revealed competition among different metals for hydrophobic ligands. Metal displacement from hydrophobic complexes was generally most significant following the addition of ionic Al or Pb, although the addition of either of these metals had little effect on the octanol-solubility of the other. In both river water samples hydrophobic metals were detected on the suspended particles retained by filtration following their extraction in n-octanol. In general, particulate Cu and Zn (up to 40%) were most available, and Al, Co and Pb most resistant (<1%) to octanol extraction. Distribution coefficients defining the concentration ratio of octanol-soluble particle-bound metal to octanol-soluble dissolved metal were in the range 10(3.3)-10(5.3)mlg(-1). The presence of hydrophobic dissolved and particulate metal species has implications for our understanding of the biogeochemical behaviour of metals in aquatic environments. Specifically, such species are predicted to exhibit characteristics of non-polar organic contaminants, including the potential to penetrate the lipid bilayer. Current strategies for assessing the bioavailability and toxicity of dissolved and particulate trace metals in natural waters may, therefore, require revision.

Effects of lipids on the sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds on geosorbents: a case study using phenanthrene

The impact of the lipid fraction of natural geosorbents on the sorption of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon was assessed using several experiments. In the first set of experiments phenanthrene was sorbed on a coastal sediment as well as on its humin and humic acid fractions before and after lipid extraction. Before lipid extraction, sorption shows dominantly partitioning characteristics. However, the extraction of lipids from sediment and humin drastically increases, by up to one order of magnitude, their sorption affinity for phenanthrene at low sorbate concentrations, resulting in increased isotherm nonlinearity. This effect is less pronounced for humic acids. One mechanism proposed for the increasing sorption is that lipids, despite their very low relative abundance in the sediments, can compete with phenanthrene for specific high affinity sorption sites (e.g., matrix pores and adsorption sites). This competition is not surprising considering the similar hydrophobic nature of lipids and phenanthrene. Lipids, or any non-polar molecules, could also act like plasticizers by swelling rigid domains and disrupting high affinity sites. In both cases, the removal of lipids (and extraction solvents) makes those sites available for phenanthrene. These provide alternative explanations to the previously proposed "solvent conditioning effect" believed to occur when geosorbents are treated with non-polar solvents modifying the matrix structure, an effect yet to be proven at molecular scale. To further investigate the impact of lipids on sorption, other independent experiments were performed. In a second experiment, re-addition of lipids to the extracted sediment restored the sorption isotherm linearity observed in the native material supporting the absence of irreversible extraction artifacts. However, high addition of lipids (i.e., after saturation of high affinity sites) seems to also enlarge the low affinity partitioning domain. These results are consistent with dual-mode, hole-filling, sorption models involving diffusion. In the final set of experiments, solid-state 19F-NMR using F-labeled lipids sorbed onto the sediments confirmed that lipids may be in different domains (mobile or rigid) that interact or not with phenanthrene. The possible effects of lipid removal on sorption have been overlooked and should be considered when geosorbents are pretreated.

Abnormally elevated VTG concentrations in flounder (Platichthys flesus) from the Mersey estuary (UK)--a continuing problem

Vitellogenin (VTG) plasma concentrations were measured in flounder (Platicthys flesus L.) caught in two neighbouring UK estuaries between autumn 1997 and summer 2000. As found in previous studies, male and immature female flounder that were caught in the Mersey, but not in the Dee, had abnormally elevated concentrations of VTG in their plasma-evidence of the presence of natural and synthetic estrogens and/or xenoestrogens in the Mersey. The present study reveals a marked seasonal cycle in VTG concentrations in males. In late spring and summer, male flounder in the Mersey have relatively low concentrations of VTG (microg mL(-1) range). However, in mid-winter, mean concentrations were as high as 5 mg mL(-1). There is also evidence that there was a lessening in the degree of estrogenic endocrine disruption between 1996-1997 (the period of the initial studies on the Mersey) and 1998-2000 (the period covered by the present study). Only 0.5% of the fish contained ovotestes (intersex condition).

Trace metal distribution coefficients in the Mersey Estuary, UK: evidence for salting out of metal complexes

An examination of partition data for trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) from a number of independent studies conducted in a highly contaminated, organic-rich estuary (Mersey, UK) indicates an increase in the sediment-water distribution coefficient, KD, with increasing salinity for all metals with the excepton of Cd. This behavior is not consistent with inorganic speciation calculations or empirical modeling studies in other estuaries, which predict an inverse relationship between KD and salinity due to competitive adsorption and complexation with seawater ions. The data are, however, well-defined by an empirical model based on the salting out of neutral organic chemicals and yield salting constants in the range 0.7-2.0 L mol(-1). It is suggested that trace metals are complexed by and, subsequently, neutralize organic ligands, and that the resulting neutral assemblages are salted out, possibly via electrostriction. Examination of sorption date from other environments suggests that the effect may be more general in highly contaminated or organic-rich estuaries, and that a specific pool of relatively large, but undefined ligands, is mainly responsible.
