Comparison of arithmetic and geometric means as measures of a central tendency in cattle nematode populations

Efficacy calculations in anthelmintic studies require estimates of the central tendency for the nematode populations. Confusion exists among practitioners regarding which measures of central tendency are most appropriate; although the arithmetic mean is frequently used, there are theoretical reasons for preferring the geometric mean. To investigate this controversy, arithmetic and geometric means were compared for their suitability for use in measuring efficacy. Arithmetic and geometric means were compared as measures of central tendency for skewed distributions. The following criteria were developed to facilitate the comparison: (1) probability around the parameter, (2) influence of extreme values, and (3) proximity to the median. Under log-normality, theoretical results demonstrated the superiority of the geometric mean. Modified-bootstrap simulations using empirical data from cattle were used to confirm theoretical expectations. Simulations on log-normal data supported the geometric mean as the better indicator of the central tendency. Additionally, for data not confirmed as log-normal, the superiority of geometric means was demonstrated. In a comparison of precision, it was shown that mean squared error was always smaller for sample geometric means than for arithmetic means when n> or =2. Simulation results added support to that conclusion.

The role of parasite epidemiology in the management of grazing cattle

Epidemiology of ruminant helminths is the foundation on which strategic parasite control programmes are designed. Without this information one is not able to use anthelmintics to provide the optimal benefits for controlling both the adult worm and the pasture larval populations. The absence of strategic programmes generally results in using anthelmintics at the convenience of the producer, which may have little if any impact on parasite populations. The design of a strategic parasite control programme requires a knowledge of the dynamics of egg shedding from the host and the resulting pasture larval populations. It is important to know if larvae are available when animals are turned out onto pasture, when larval populations reach their maximal numbers and when they are induced to become hypobiotic. The goal is to keep pasture larval populations as low as possible. The use of pasture rotation adds another dimension to control programmes. The longer a pasture is allowed to remain fallow, the lower the pasture larval burden will be when it is grazed next. However, when we use intensive rotational grazing, animals may return to the pasture about 28 days later, when the larvae resulting from the eggs shed in the previous grazing are infective. This practice forces cattle to eat all of the forage available, including the grass closest to the faecal pat, where most of the infective larvae are available. If we treated cattle before turning them onto a clean rotationally grazed pasture, we should be able to control parasitism. Using a long-acting anthelmintic should enhance helminth control in rotationally grazed pastures and actually help to clean the pastures. Another grazing management practice is to alternately graze different species. This programme with the strategic use of anthelmintics should reduce parasitism in both host species.

Efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing dairy calves in Kenya

The efficacy of morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) bolus against gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated under field conditions over a 10-month period. Twenty weaner calves were randomly divided into 2 groups of 10 calves each and grazed from March to December on adjacent, similarly contaminated paddocks. Group 1 calves (T-1) served as untreated controls while group 2 calves (T-2) were dosed at turnout with MSRT bolus designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days. The efficacy of MSRT was assessed by comparison of parasitological data (faecal worm egg counts, herbage larval counts, worm counts from tracer calves and set-stocked trial calves, determination of haematological parameters and pepsinogen levels), weight gains and clinical status of the animals. Faecal egg counts from the treated group (T-2) were reduced by 100% (P < 0.001) following treatment and remained significantly (P < 0.05) lower than counts from T-1 calves up to trial termination. The use of MSRT bolus resulted in a reduction of 92% (P < 0.001) in the number of gastrointestinal nematodes in set-stocked calves at the end of the study and a 55 to 85.7% reduction in herbage larval infectivity as reflected in lowered parasite burdens in tracer calves. At the trial termination, the control calves had gained on average (+/- s.d.) 59.4 +/- 4.8 kg (200.0 +/- 7.4 g day-1) and the treated ones on an average 128.6 +/- 10.5 kg (530.0 +/- 13.1 g day-1).

Production responses following strategic parasite control in a beef cow/calf herd

Strategic parasite control has been reported to improve performance in a beef cow/calf herd that does not demonstrate clinical parasitism. This study was conducted to determine if strategic anthelmintic treatment at turnout and at midsummer would improve growth and reproduction. Two cow/calf groups of similar composition were grazed on separate, but equivalent pastures in the spring, and at midsummer, they were moved to new pastures. The treated group was given fenbendazole at tumout (cows) and at midsummer (cows and calves). The control group was not treated. The study was repeated in the following year. Across both years of the study, parasite egg counts were substantially reduced in both the treated cows (P < 0.005) and treated calves (P < 0.0001). The calves in the treated group significantly (P < 0.0001) outgained the control calves in both years of the study by 19.3 kg and 13.2 kg, respectively. Average daily gain (ADG) after adjusting for birth weight and birth date for treated calves was 0.13 kg greater than for control calves (0.83 vs 0.70) for the 2-year study (P < 0.0001) There was also a significant (P = 0.0357) increase in the reproductive performance of the cows. The pregnancy rate averaged across years was 94% for the treated cows compared to 82% for the control animals.

Effect of a single strategically timed dose of fenbendazole on cow and calf performance

A 168-day study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a strategically timed treatment with fenbendazole on anthelmintic efficacy and performance of beef cows and calves. Eight groups of 10 Angus cow/calf pairs were allotted on 7 May 1987 to eight similarly managed 4.86-ha pastures (bermudagrass/tall fescue) on the basis of cow age, and calf sex and weight. At that time, four groups of cows received a dose of fenbendazole (5 mg kg-1) with their calves receiving fenbendazole at the same dosage 28 days later. Treated calf average daily gain (ADG) was 0.04 kg greater (P less than 0.05) than control calves (0.82 vs. 0.78 kg) during the 168-day study. Treated cow ADG was 0.09 kg greater (P less than 0.05) than control cows (0.40 vs. 0.31 kg). Although there was a reduction (P less than 0.05) in fecal egg counts following treatment of the cows, the numbers of eggs generally were low compared with egg counts of calves. From Day 28 through Day 112 post-treatment, fecal egg counts of treated calves were lower (P less than 0.05) than those of control calves. However, fecal egg counts from treated calves increased post-treatment until there were no differences (P greater than 0.05) between treated and control calves at the end of the study. The pregnancy rate tended to be higher (P = 0.12) for treated cows (98%) than for untreated control cows (75%). The actual calving rate was higher (P = 0.03), for treated cows (90%) than for untreated control cows (68%). Results indicated that a strategic anthelmintic treatment can improve cow and calf performance, but that calves born in late winter or early spring may need more than one therapeutic dose during the nursing period on pasture.

Efficacy of the morantel sustained release trilaminate matrix against gastrointestinal nematodes in beef calves

The effectiveness of the morantel sustained release trilaminate (MSRT) in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes through a grazing season was evaluated using 60 yearling beef stocker calves randomly divided into 2 groups of 30 animals each. In April 1985, the calves comprising the treatment group each received an MSRT designed to release morantel tartrate continuously for 90 days while those of the control group remained unmedicated. All animals were weighed and samples of rectal feces were taken at 14-day intervals, beginning on Day 0, until trial termination (Day 168). At trial termination, 10 control and 10 treated calves were necropsied for recovery of gastrointestinal nematodes. Three sets of parasite-naïve tracer calves were utilized to evaluate the initial, interim and final levels of pasture contamination by nematode larvae. Overall, the use of the MSRT resulted in a 75.5% reduction (P less than 0.001) in output of nematode eggs from the principals, an 81.8% reduction (P less than 0.001) in numbers of gastrointestinal nematodes in principals (at trial termination), and a 96.9% reduction (P less than 0.05) of pasture larval nematode contamination (as indirectly indicated by parasite burdens in tracer calves). The mean weight advantage of treated calves was 16.6 kg per head (P less than 0.001).
