The scent of attraction and the smell of success: crossmodal influences on person perception

In recent decades, there has been an explosion of research into the crossmodal influence of olfactory cues on multisensory person perception. Numerous peer-reviewed studies have documented that a variety of olfactory stimuli, from ambient malodours through to fine fragrances, and even a range of chemosensory body odours can influence everything from a perceiver's judgments of another person's attractiveness, age, affect, health/disease status, and even elements of their personality. The crossmodal and multisensory contributions to such effects are reviewed and the limitations/peculiarities of the research that have been published to date are highlighted. At the same time, however, it is important to note that the presence of scent (and/or the absence of malodour) can also influence people's (i.e., a perceiver's) self-confidence which may, in turn, affect how attractive they appear to others. Several potential cognitive mechanisms have been put forward to try and explain such crossmodal/multisensory influences, and some of the neural substrates underpinning these effects have now been characterized. At the end of this narrative review, a number of the potential (and actual) applications for, and implications of, such crossmodal/multisensory phenomena involving olfaction are outlined briefly.

[The role of the vomeronasal system in the formation of the human sexual behaviour]

This review deals with the structure and function of the vomeronasal system and evaluation of its influence on the sexual sphere of humans and animals. Special attention is given to the role of pheromones in the regulation of the sexual behaviour. The data concerning the function of the vomeronasal organ following surgical interventions in the nasal cavity are discussed.

Olfactory sensitivity: functioning in schizophrenia and implications for understanding the nature and progression of psychosis

Prefrontal neural processes maturing during neurodevelopment parallel normal improvement in higher order olfactory processing (identification) from childhood. Hence, disorders of adolescence such as schizophrenia that implicate prefrontal regions are associated with olfactory identification deficits in the presence of relatively intact lower order olfactory processing capacity (sensation) and mediating neural processes (limbic system). Understanding the linear neural trajectory of olfactory processing can assist in detecting the location, nature, and extent of early compromise of circuitry implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders such as psychosis. More recently, relatively discreet odorant sensitivity problems in schizophrenia have been described and these appear related to secretion of malodorous compounds. These findings have significant implications for future genetic prediction of this disorder.

A low-cost, MR-compatible olfactometer

We present a design for an olfactometer, suitable for fMRI experiments, that can be constructed at extremely low cost. The olfactometer presents odors directly to the nose via a nasal cannula at unobtrusively low flow velocities, with no large assemblies required on or near the subject's face. The olfactometer can be controlled manually, or by computer via a serial interface. A validation study verified that the olfactometer reliably presents odors to test subjects. Errors and response latency times decreased with increased flow rate in an orderly manner, as expected.

Psychological effects of musky compounds: comparison of androstadienone with androstenol and muscone

Previously, we have shown that delta4,16-androstadien-3-one modulates psychological state, reducing negative mood and increasing positive mood (Jacob and McClintock, 2000; Jacob et al., 2001a). In order to determine whether similar musky compounds also produce these effects, we compared the effects of androstadienone to those of androstenol and muscone, measuring the psychological states of 37 participants. Androstenol and muscone were chosen because they too have a musky odor at high concentrations, while androstenol is a steroid like androstadienone and muscone is not. In a controlled laboratory setting, we conducted a double-blind, within-subject, repeated-measures experiment counterbalanced for order of presentation. Under each participant's nose, a nanomolar amount of each compound was presented, masked by clove oil to minimize perceptible olfactory differences. Participants completed a baseline psychological battery and twice again at 25-min intervals after exposure. Androstadienone's effects on psychological state were unique in comparison with those of androstenol and with muscone. Exposure through passive inhalation, rather than dermal contact, was sufficient for these effects. Although this is additional evidence that androstadienone may be a pheromone, it is yet to be determined whether humans exude concentrations into the air adequate for social communication or process this chemical information within natural social contexts.

The anatomy and functional role of the circumvallate papilla/von Ebner gland complex

We suggest that the description of the reciprocal relationships between the circumvallate papilla (CP) and von Ebner glands (VEGs) reported in most textbooks of anatomy must be rewritten. In the past, the VEG was described as a gland ancillary to the taste buds, mainly involved in the washing of the vallum around the CP or in perireceptorial events. Recent data obtained in our laboratory or reported in the literature indicate that both these structures form a single functional unity which could be called circumvallata papilla/von Ebner gland (CP/VEG) complex. The CP/VEG complex seems to represent an important enzyme- and pheromone-producing system composed of a sensitive (taste buds) and an effectory (VEG) branch linked by feedback mechanisms of control. In our hypothesis, the taste buds located in the distal portion of the VEG ductal system can be considered similar to the chemoreceptory cells located in other portions of the digestive apparatus such as pancreatic and bile ducts. Therefore, the CP/VEG complex represents a rare example of chemoreceptor-secretory organ.

The functionality of the human vomeronasal organ (VNO): evidence for steroid receptors

The human vomeronasal organ (VNO) is an anatomical entity which is generally considered to be vestigial or non-functional. Nevertheless, a steroidal vomeropherin applied to the human VNO, results in changes of autonomic function, pulsatile release of luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormones, autonomic and electroencepholographic activity. The vomeropherin pregna-4,20-diene-3,6-dione (PDD) was delivered as pulses in an air stream directed into the lumen of the VNO or to the surface of the olfactory epithelium and respiratory epithelium of the nasal septum. Single stimuli at a concentration of 10(-10) to 10(-8) M produced dose-dependent changes of the electrovomerogram. No significant effects were observed when the same applicator delivered identical stimuli to the nasal respiratory epithelium or to the olfactory epithelium. Administration of the vomeropherin to male subjects changed gonadotropin pulsatility. In males, PDD (5 x 10(9) M) decreased luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatility which resulted in a statistically significant reduction of plasma LH levels (P < 0.009) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) pulsatility (P < 0.021), but it produced no significant effects in female subjects. Prolactin (PRL) was not significantly affected by this vomeropherin in either male or female subjects. These data demonstrate, for the first time, the existence of a functional vomeronasal-pituitary pathway in adult humans. In addition to the effect on gonadotropin pulsatility, the vomeropherin also produces concurrent reflex autonomic effects after VNO stimulation. These included decreased respiratory frequency, increased cardiac frequency, and event-related changes of electrodermal activity and EEG pattern. Therefore, this investigation also provides evidence for functional connections between the VNO and a variety of hypothalamic areas in adult humans.

Structural, morphometric, and immunohistological study of the accessory olfactory bulb in the dog

BACKGROUND

The study of the morphological, morphometric, and immunohistological characteristics of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) in the dog is the main goal of this work.

METHODS

Horizontal sections of the AOB where stained by four different methods (haematoxilin/eosin, Tolivia, Nissl, and Bielchowsky). The avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) was used, whereas the monoclonal antibodies to neuron-specific enolase, neurofilaments, glial fibrillary acidic protein, and synaptophysin were selected for the immunohistological study. A computer-assisted image analysis was employed in order to define the morphometric characteristics of de AOB.

RESULTS

The general morphology of the AOB indicates that it comprises a thick glomerular layer and a thinner internal layer containing mitral/tufted, granular, and glial cells. The mitral/tufted cells have large pale-staining nuclei with intensely staining nucleoli. There does not appear to be a clearly defined granular layer. No reactivity with antibodies to neuron-specific enolase or to neurofilaments was observed in any part of the AOB, but there was some reactivity with an antibody to glial fibrillary acidic protein and widespread reactivity with an antibody to synaptophysin.

CONCLUSIONS

The stratification of the AOB is simpler and less well defined than that of the main olfactory bulb (MOB), unlike in rodents in which the structure of the AOB corresponds closely to that of the MOB. According to the scale of Frahm and Bhatnagar (1980. J. Anat., 130: 349-365) the AOB of the adult dog has an intermediate position.
