Abstract
OBJECTIVE The number of cerebrovascular (CV) surgeons has grown with the rise of endovascular neurosurgery. However, it is unclear whether the number of CV surgeon-scientists has concomitantly increased. With increasing numbers of CV neurosurgeons in the US workforce, the authors analyzed associated changes in National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) funding trends for CV surgeons over time. METHODS Publicly available data were collected on currently practicing academic CV surgeons in the US. Inflation-adjusted NIH funding between 2009 and 2021 was surveyed using NIH RePORTER and Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research data. The K12 Neurosurgeon Research Career Development Program and NREF grant data were queried for CV-focused grants. Pearson R correlation, chi-square analysis, and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS From 2009 to 2021, NIH funding increased: in total (p = 0.0318), to neurosurgeons (p < 0.0001), to CV research projects (p < 0.0001), and to CV surgeons (p = 0.0018). During this time period, there has been an increase in the total number of CV surgeons (p < 0.0001), the number of NIH-funded CV surgeons (p = 0.0034), and the percentage of CV surgeons with NIH funding (p = 0.370). Additionally, active NIH grant dollars per CV surgeon (p = 0.0398) and the number of NIH grants per CV surgeon (p = 0.4257) have increased. Nevertheless, CV surgeons have been awarded a decreasing proportion of the overall pool of neurosurgeon-awarded NIH grants during this time period (p = 0.3095). In addition, there has been a significant decrease in the number of K08, K12, and K23 career development awards granted to CV surgeons during this time period (p = 0.0024). There was also a significant decline in the proportion of K12 (p = 0.0044) and downtrend in early-career NREF (p = 0.8978) grant applications and grants awarded during this time period. Finally, NIH-funded CV surgeons were more likely to have completed residency less recently (p = 0.001) and less likely to have completed an endovascular fellowship (p = 0.044) as compared with non-NIH-funded CV surgeons. CONCLUSIONS The number of CV surgeons is increasing over time. While there has been a concomitant increase in the number of NIH-funded CV surgeons and the number of NIH grants awarded per CV surgeon in the past 12 years, there has also been a significant decrease in CV surgeons with K08, K12, and K23 career development awards and a downtrend in CV-focused K12 and early-career NREF applications and awarded grants. The latter findings suggest that the pipeline for future NIH-funded CV surgeons may be in decline.

Abstract
Cerebrovascular imaging assessments are particularly challenging in adolescent cohorts, where not all modalities are appropriate, and rapid brain maturation alters hemodynamics at both macro- and microvascular scales. In a preliminary sample of healthy adolescents (n=12, 8-25 years), we investigated relationships between 4D flow MRI-derived blood velocity and blood flow in bilateral anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries and BOLD cerebrovascular reactivity in associated vascular territories. As hypothesized, higher velocities in large arteries are associated with an earlier response to a vasodilatory stimulus (cerebrovascular reactivity delay) in the downstream territory. Higher blood flow through these arteries is associated with a larger BOLD response to a vasodilatory stimulus (cerebrovascular reactivity amplitude) in the associated territory. These trends are consistent in a case study of adult moyamoya disease. In our small adolescent cohort, macrovascular-microvascular relationships for velocity/delay and flow/CVR change with age, though underlying mechanisms are unclear. Our work emphasizes the need to better characterize this key stage of human brain development, when cerebrovascular hemodynamics are changing, and standard imaging methods offer limited insight into these processes. We provide important normative data for future comparisons in pathology, where combining macro- and microvascular assessments may better help us prevent, stratify, and treat cerebrovascular disease.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study is to determine the atheromatous plaques' prevalence in orthopantomography and their relationship with periodontal disease and missing teeth. Material and Methods. Orthopantomographs of 1,254 patients over 18 years of age from Clínica Arlanza in Lerma, Burgos, were examined between 2017 and 2021. A Planmeca ProOne® orthopantomograph (68 kV, 7 mA, and 10 sg) was used. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS Statistics® version 25. The results of the categorical variables were described as frequencies (%). Contingency tables were made with the qualitative variables, and the chi-square test was applied to study the relationship among them. The measure of statistical power used was the relative risk (RR), which was described with its respective 95% confidence interval (CI). Student's t-test was applied to study the relationship between the qualitative variable "presence or absence of atheroma plaque" and the quantitative variable "number of teeth." Results A 6.2% prevalence of atheroma plaques was obtained from 1,079 selected X-rays. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened as follows: healthy patients vs. periodontal patients with less than 30% bone loss in radiography: RR 0.434, 95% CI 0.181-1.041, p = 0.053 healthy patients vs. patients with between 30%-60% bone loss: RR 0.177, 95% CI 0.075-0.418, p < 0.05 healthy patients vs. patients with more than 60% bone loss: RR 0.121, 95% CI 0.041-0.355, p < 0.05. Patients with calcifications on their orthopantomograms had a lower mean teeth number (20.9 teeth) compared to patients without calcifications (24 teeth), which was statistically significant, t (1077) = -3.125, p < 0.05. Conclusions Orthopantomography can be considered a screening method to detect patients at increased cardiovascular risk who are referred for individualized study. It is important to continue research to know the real significance of these findings. Dentists should be aware of the importance of our work in our patients' systemic health.

Abstract
A wide range of life-threatening conditions with complicated pathogenesis involves neurovascular disorders encompassing Neurovascular unit (NVU) damage. The pathophysiology of NVU is characterized by several features including tissue hypoxia, stimulation of inflammatory and angiogenic processes, and the initiation of intricate molecular interactions, collectively leading to an elevation in blood-brain barrier permeability, atherosclerosis and ultimately, neurovascular diseases. The presence of compelling data about the significant involvement of the glycosylation in the development of diseases has sparked a discussion on whether the abnormal glycosylation may serve as a causal factor for neurovascular disorders, rather than being just recruited as a secondary player in regulating the critical events during the development processes like embryo growth and angiogenesis. An essential tool for both developing new anti-ischemic therapies and understanding the processes of ischemic brain damage is undertaking pre-clinical studies of neurovascular disorders. Together with the post-translational modification of proteins, the modulation of glycosylation and its enzymes implicates itself in several abnormal activities which are known to accelerate neuronal vasculopathy. Despite the failure of the majority of glycosylation-based preclinical and clinical studies over the past years, there is a significant probability to provide neuroprotection utilizing modern and advanced approaches to target abnormal glycosylation activity at embryonic stages as well. This article focuses on a variety of experimental evidence to postulate the interconnection between glycosylation and vascular disorders along with possible treatment options.

Abstract
Weather conditions influence the incidence of cardiovascular disease. However, few studies have investigated the association between weather temperature and humidity and cerebrovascular disease hospitalizations in a super-aging society. We included 606,807 consecutive patients with cerebrovascular disease admitted to Japanese acute-care hospitals between 2015 and 2019. The primary outcome was the number of cerebrovascular disease hospitalizations per day. Multilevel mixed-effects linear regression models were used to estimate the association of mean temperature and humidity, 1 day before hospital admission, with cerebrovascular disease hospitalizations, after adjusting for air pollution, hospital, and patient demographics. Lower mean temperatures and humidity < 70% or humidity ≧ 70% are associated with an increased incidence of cerebrovascular disease hospitalization (coefficient, - 1.442 [- 1.473 to - 1.411] per °C, p < 0.001, coefficient, - 0.084 [- 0.112 to - 0.056] per%, p < 0.001, and coefficient, 0.136 [0.103 to 0.168] per %, p < 0.001, respectively). Lower mean temperatures and extremely lower or higher humidity are associated with an increased incidence of cerebrovascular disease hospitalization in a super-aging society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Based on the literature and data on its clinical trials, the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing neurosurgery has been 3.0%~26%. We used advanced machine learning techniques and statistical methods to provide a clinical prediction model for VTE after neurosurgery. METHODS All patients (n = 5867) who underwent neurosurgery from the development and retrospective internal validation cohorts were obtained from May 2017 to April 2022 at the Department of Neurosurgery at the Sanbo Brain Hospital. The clinical and biomarker variables were divided into pre-, intra-, and postoperative. A univariate logistic regression (LR) was applied to explore the 67 candidate predictors with VTE. We used a multivariable logistic regression (MLR) to select all significant MLR variables of MLR to build the clinical risk prediction model. We used a random forest to calculate the importance of significant variables of MLR. In addition, we conducted prospective internal (n = 490) and external validation (n = 2301) for the model. RESULTS Eight variables were selected for inclusion in the final clinical prediction model: D-dimer before surgery, activated partial thromboplastin time before neurosurgery, age, craniopharyngioma, duration of operation, disturbance of consciousness on the second day after surgery and high dose of mannitol, and highest D-dimer within 72 h after surgery. The area under the curve (AUC) values for the development, retrospective internal validation, and prospective internal validation cohorts were 0.78, 0.77, and 0.79, respectively. The external validation set had the highest AUC value of 0.85. CONCLUSIONS This validated clinical prediction model, including eight clinical factors and biomarkers, predicted the risk of VTE following neurosurgery. Looking forward to further research exploring the standardization of clinical decision-making for primary VTE prevention based on this model.

Abstract
Individuals born preterm have shorter lifespans and elevated rates of chronic illness that contribute to mortality risk when compared to individuals born at term. Emerging evidence suggests that individuals born preterm or of low birthweight also exhibit physiologic and cellular biomarkers of accelerated aging. It is unclear whether, and to what extent, accelerated aging contributes to a higher risk of chronic illness and mortality among individuals born preterm. Here, we review accelerated aging phenotypes in adults born preterm and biological pathways that appear to contribute to accelerated aging. We highlight biomarkers of accelerated aging and various resiliency factors, including both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic factors, that might buffer the propensity for accelerated aging among individuals born preterm.

Abstract
Among the high prevalence of cerebrovascular diseases nowadays, acute ischemic stroke stands out, representing a significant worldwide health issue with important socio-economic implications. Prompt diagnosis and intervention are important milestones for the management of this multifaceted pathology, making understanding the various stroke-onset symptoms crucial. A key role in acute ischemic stroke management is emphasizing the essential role of a multi-disciplinary team, therefore, increasing the efficiency of recognition and treatment. Neuroimaging and neuroradiology have evolved dramatically over the years, with multiple approaches that provide a higher understanding of the morphological aspects as well as timely recognition of cerebral artery occlusions for effective therapy planning. Regarding the treatment matter, the pharmacological approach, particularly fibrinolytic therapy, has its merits and challenges. Endovascular thrombectomy, a game-changer in stroke management, has witnessed significant advances, with technologies like stent retrievers and aspiration catheters playing pivotal roles. For select patients, combining pharmacological and endovascular strategies offers evidence-backed benefits. The aim of our comprehensive study on acute ischemic stroke is to efficiently compare the current therapies, recognize novel possibilities from the literature, and describe the state of the art in the interdisciplinary approach to acute ischemic stroke. As we aspire for holistic patient management, the emphasis is not just on medical intervention but also on physical therapy, mental health, and community engagement. The future holds promising innovations, with artificial intelligence poised to reshape stroke diagnostics and treatments. Bridging the gap between groundbreaking research and clinical practice remains a challenge, urging continuous collaboration and research.

Abstract
In genetic studies of cerebrovascular diseases, the optimal vessels to use as controls remain unclear. Our goal is to compare the transcriptomic profiles among 3 different types of control vessels: superficial temporal artery (STA), middle cerebral arteries (MCA), and arteries from the circle of Willis obtained from autopsies (AU). We examined the transcriptomic profiles of STA, MCA, and AU using RNAseq. We also investigated the effects of using these control groups on the results of the comparisons between aneurysms and the control arteries. Our study showed that when comparing pathological cerebral arteries to control groups, all control groups presented similar responses in the activation of immunological processes, the regulation of intracellular signaling pathways, and extracellular matrix productions, despite their intrinsic biological differences. When compared to STA, AU exhibited upregulation of stress and apoptosis genes, whereas MCA showed upregulation of genes associated with tRNA/rRNA processing. Moreover, our results suggest that the matched case-control study design, which involves control STA samples collected from the same subjects of matched aneurysm samples in our study, can improve the identification of non-inherited disease-associated genes. Given the challenges associated with obtaining fresh intracranial arteries from healthy individuals, our study suggests that using MCA, AU, or paired STA samples as controls are feasible strategies for future large-scale studies investigating cerebral vasculopathies. However, the intrinsic differences of each type of control should be taken into consideration when interpreting the results. With the limitations of each control type, it may be most optimal to use multiple tissues as controls.

Abstract
Objective The objective is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of cross electro-nape-acupuncture (CENA) in the treatment of pseudobulbar palsy in patients with tracheotomy intubation for severe cerebral haemorrhage and to provide an innovative acupuncture method for the treatment of such patients. Methods A total of 126 patients from six trial centres who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into three groups according to the random number table method in the ratio of 1 : 1 : 1, with 42 patients in each group, and the three groups were divided into CENA group, electro-acupuncture group, and acupuncture group. Each group's acupuncture treatment lasted for 30 minutes, and the needles were removed at the end of the treatment. Acupuncture was performed once a week on Sunday only and twice a day from Monday to Saturday, a total of 4 weeks of treatment. The SWT, FDA, ChSWAL-QOL, and TCRGS scores of the three groups of patients before and after treatment were compared to evaluate the effect of CENA on remodelling the function of swallowing reflex and cough reflex and promoting the recovery of dysarthria and swallowing quality of life in pseudobulbar palsy in patients with tracheotomy intubation for severe cerebral haemorrhage. Results After treatment, the WST and TCRGS grade scores decreased and the FDA and ChSWAL-QOL scores increased significantly in all three groups compared with the pretreatment scores and were statistically significant. There was a significant difference between the three groups for these four indicators after treatment; the comparison between groups showed significant differences in the CENA group compared to the electro-acupuncture and acupuncture groups. The efficiency of the CENA group was significantly better than that of the electro-acupuncture and acupuncture groups. Conclusion Compared with the acupuncture and electro-acupuncture groups, the CENA could better promote the remodelling of swallowing function and cough reflex function, promote the recovery of dysarthria, and better improve the quality of life of patients with pseudobulbar palsy from tracheotomy intubation in severe cerebral haemorrhage.

Comparison between clevidipine and nicardipine in cerebrovascular diseases: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Clin Neurol Neurosurg 2023; 227:107644. Abstract
PURPOSE The term "cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs)" refers to a broad category of diseases that affect the brain's blood vessels and cerebral circulation. Controlling acute hypertension (HTN) by antihypertensive drugs such as clevidipine and nicardipine can be a highly efficient method of lowering the incidence of CVDs. METHODS This is a systematic review and meta-analysis study. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science online databases and a gray literature search were performed to identify potentially eligible studies. The included studies were observational studies that compared adult patients receiving clevidipine or nicardipine for controlling HTN in the setting of CVD. RESULTS We reviewed 5 final included articles, including 546 patients. The pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) for time to goal SBP was - 0.04 (95 % CI: [-0.66; 0.58], p-value: 0.86, I2: 79.0 %, pooled MD: -12.90 min), meaning that the clevidipine group had a shorter time to goal systolic blood pressure (SBP) than the nicardipine group. The pooled SMD for total volume infusion was - 0.52 (95 % CI: [-0.93; -0.12], p-value: 0.03, I2: 0.0 %, pooled MD: -1118.81 mL), showing a notably lower total volume infused into patients in the clevidipine group. CONCLUSIONS We found that clevidipine reaches the SBP goal faster than nicardipine; however, there was no statistically significant difference between the two drugs. The total volume infused to achieve the goal SBP was significantly lower in the clevidipine group. Further prospective studies are needed to compare clevidipine and nicardipine in CVD patients on a large scale.

Abstract
Cerebrovascular disease refers to damage to brain tissue caused by impaired intracranial blood circulation. It usually presents clinically as an acute nonfatal event and is characterized by high morbidity, disability, and mortality. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasonography is a non-invasive method for the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease that uses the Doppler effect to detect the hemodynamic and physiological parameters of the major intracranial basilar arteries. It can provide important hemodynamic information that cannot be measured by other diagnostic imaging techniques for cerebrovascular disease. And the result parameters of TCD ultrasonography such as blood flow velocity and beat index can reflect the type of cerebrovascular disease and serve as a basis to assist physicians in the treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science which is used in a wide range of applications in agriculture, communications, medicine, finance, and other fields. In recent years, there are much research devoted to the application of AI to TCD. The review and summary of related technologies is an important work to promote the development of this field, which can provide an intuitive technical summary for future researchers. In this paper, we first review the development, principles, and applications of TCD ultrasonography and other related knowledge, and briefly introduce the development of AI in the field of medicine and emergency medicine. Finally, we summarize in detail the applications and advantages of AI technology in TCD ultrasonography including the establishment of an examination system combining brain computer interface (BCI) and TCD ultrasonography, the classification and noise cancellation of TCD ultrasonography signals using AI algorithms, and the use of intelligent robots to assist physicians in TCD ultrasonography and discuss the prospects for the development of AI in TCD ultrasonography.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare disease, especially in children. Therefore, thrombophilia markers, risk factors, treatment strategy, and MRI, as well as clinical outcome need further investigation to support future diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for children.
Methods We retrospectively identified all children with CSVT treated in our center between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2015. Risk factors and laboratory findings were investigated. Furthermore, outcome and treatment satisfaction were evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analyses and a modified questionnaire.
Results All 43 patients, who agreed to participate, were treated with therapeutic levels of heparin; 86% of children had an increased risk for thromboembolic events upon onset of CSVT (acute disease: 58.1%, perinatal risk factors: 9.3%, medical intervention/immobility: 14%, chronic disease: 16.3%). Thrombophilia markers showed positive results (e.g., reduced values for protein C/S, factor-V–Leiden mutation) in 58% of children at the time of CSVT diagnosis but dropping to 20.9% over the course of the disease. Forty-two of 43 patients received MRI follow-ups and the outcome showed complete recanalization in 69% of the patients and partial recanalization in 31%. At the onset of CSVT, 88% of patients reported restrictions in everyday life due to CSVT; at follow-up this percentage declined to 18%. Satisfaction with the outcome among parents/patients according to the questionnaire was high with 1.7 (German school grades from 1 to 6).
Conclusions All 42 children with MRI follow-up demonstrated complete or partial recanalization under anticoagulation. This positive result underlines the need for future studies on anticoagulation to optimize therapy regimens of pediatric CSVT.

Abstract
Introduction: Our aim was to use the red cell distribution width-lymphocyte ratio (RLR) as a novel biomarker to predict prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) among older patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Methods: This longitudinal study included older patients admitted to a tertiary cardiovascular surgery hospital between January 2017 and January 2022. Results: A total of 574 patients were studied, including 83 patients (14.5%) who had prolonged ICU LOS and 471 (85.5%) control subjects. After adjustment for the European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation 2, the RLR score showed a 10% increased risk of prolonged ICU LOS (odds ratio: 1.10; CI: 1.05-1.16; p = 0.01). Conclusion: Preoperative RLR can be used to predict the risk of long-term intensive care stay in older cardiac surgery patients.

Abstract
The dementia landscape has undergone a striking paradigm shift. The advances in understanding of neurodegeneration and proteinopathies has changed our approach to patients with cognitive impairment. Firstly, it has recently been shown that the various proteinopathies that are the cause of the dementia begin to build up long before the appearance of any obvious symptoms. This has cemented the idea that there is an urgency in diagnosis as it occurs very late in the pathophysiology of these diseases. Secondly, that accurate diagnosis is required to deliver targeted therapies, that is precision medicine. With this latter point, the realization that various factors of a person need to be considered as they may impact the presentation and progression of disease has risen to the forefront. Two of these factors aside from race and age are biological sex and gender (social construct), as both can have tremendous impact on manifestation of disease. This chapter will cover what is known and remains to be known on the interaction of sex and gender with some of the major causes of dementia.

Abstract
Objectives Neck circumference is associated with a distinctive fat storage process that confers additional metabolic risk. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between baseline neck circumference and the incidence of cerebrovascular disease using a prospective community-based sample of Korean adults over 12 years of follow-up, after controlling for selected covariates. Methods Participants with non-cerebrovascular disease were divided into 4 groups (Q1–Q4) based on their baseline neck circumference. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the relationship between neck circumference and cerebrovascular disease incidence over a 12-year period. Results Among this study’s 3,662 participants, 128 (3.50%) developed cerebrovascular disease. The incidence of cerebrovascular disease increased from 2.2% in Q1 to 4.3% in Q2, 2.5% in Q3, and 5.0% in Q4. When compared to Q1, the relative risks of cerebrovascular disease development were 0.57 (95 % CI, 0.25–1.31), 0.86 (95 % CI, 0.38–1.96), and 0.79 (95 % CI, 0.30–2.07) in man and 1.86 (95 % CI, 0.66–5.20), 3.50 (95 % CI, 1.25–9.86), and 4.71 (95 % CI, 1.50–14.77) in woman in Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively, after adjusting for most risk factors related to cerebrovascular disease. Conclusion The relationship between neck circumference and cerebrovascular disease was stronger in woman than in man, indicating potential differences between the sexes. These results are meaningful for evaluating and surveilling neck circumference as a promising tool for identifying subgroups of vulnerable and at-risk populations.

Abstract
Thromboelastography (TEG) is commonly used to predict coagulation state in patients with active bleeding. However, the correlation between TEG parameters and conventional tests in patients with cerebrovascular disease (CVD) remains unexplored. Here, we assessed the TEG values and their correlation with conventional tests in patients with acute cerebral infarction. Eighty-eight patients with acute cerebral infarction were enrolled from the Department of Neurology of Suzhou Medical School. Thirty healthy controls were enrolled from the preventive care department in the same hospital who were taking a physical examination. TEG 5000 thromboelastogram system was used to obtain TEG parameters. The automatic blood coagulation analyzer was used to measure the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), D-Dimer (DD) and fibrinogen (FIB) and platelet function. Among five TEG parameters, the R and K value decreased while MA value, alpha angle and CI value increased in patient group when compared with the healthy controls. The correlation between TEG parameters and conventional tests including DD, FIB, and platelet function are consistent with the high coagulation state in the patient group. Our results demonstrate that TEG parameters are sensitive indicators of high coagulation state in patients with acute cerebral infarction.

Effect of the Interaction between Depression and Sleep Disorders on the Stroke Occurrence: An Analysis Based on National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. Behav Neurol 2021; 2021:6333618. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of the interaction between depression and sleep disorders on the stroke occurrence based on the data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS Seven cycles of 2-year NHANES data (2005-2018) were analyzed in this study. Univariate analysis was first performed between the stroke and nonstroke patients, and then, multivariate logistic regression models were conducted to analyze the association of depression, sleep disorders, and their interactions with stroke occurrence. RESULTS A total of 30473 eligible participants were included in this study, including 1138 (3.73%) with stroke and 29335 (96.27%) with nonstroke. Except sex, the differences were all significant between the stroke and nonstroke patients in baseline information (all P < 0.001). Depression (odds ratio (OR): 2.494, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.098-2.964), depression severity (moderate, OR: 2.013, 95% CI: 1.612-2.514; moderately severe, OR: 2.598, 95% CI: 1.930-3.496; severe, OR: 5.588, 95% CI: 3.883-8.043), and sleep disorders (OR: 1.677, 95% CI: 1.472-1.910) were presented to be associated with an increased risk of stroke after correcting all the confounders. The logistic regression analysis showed that there was a synergic, additive interaction between depression and sleep disorders on the stroke occurrence, and the proportion of stroke patients caused by this interaction accounted for 27.1% of all the stroke patients. CONCLUSION Depression, depression severity, and sleep disorders are all independently associated with a high risk of stroke. The interaction between depression and sleep disorders can synergistically increase the stroke occurrence.

Abstract
Background Tai Chi exercise has been reported to enhance physical and mental health in the older adults; however, the mechanism remains elusive. Trial design We recruited 289 older adults practicing Tai Chi for over 3 years, together with 277 age-matched older and 102 young adults as controls. 168 Tai Chi practitioners were successfully matched to 168 older controls aged 60–69 based on a propensity score for statistics. Methods Cerebrovascular function was evaluated by measuring the hemodynamics of the carotid artery. Spearman correlation was performed to validate the age-associated physiological parameters. Results Cerebrovascular function in older adults significantly degenerated compared with the young, and was substantially correlated with age. Compared with the older control group, Tai Chi practitioners showed significant improvements in CVHI (cerebral vascular hemodynamics indices) Score (P = 0.002), mean blood flow velocity (P = 0.014), maximal blood flow velocity (P = 0.04) and minimum blood flow velocity (P < 0.001), whereas the age-related increases in pulse wave velocity (P = 0.022), characteristic impedance (P = 0.021) and peripheral resistance (P = 0.044) were lowered. Conclusions These data demonstrate a rejuvenation role of Tai Chi in improving the age-related decline of the cerebrovascular function. Abstract
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of disability; therefore, it is important to investigate factors that might affect the quality of life of stroke patients and refine rehabilitation technologies for better functional gains. The aim of this paper was to study possible factors that determine the quality of life in the residual ischemic stroke period. The MOS SF-36 health survey was completed by 210 patients undergoing early rehabilitation at a stroke care unit. The study revealed a significant decline in some quality of life indicators correlated with advancing age and severity of the condition (correlation coefficient –0.5; p < 0.01). Both physical and mental component summary scores were lower in women than in men (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). High scores on the majority of the applied subscales were observed in the patients with a vertebrobasilar stroke, as compared with those who had suffered a carotid stroke (p < 0.05). The early rehabilitation regimen complemented with acupuncture in the acute stroke period and the subsequent rehabilitation program at the Rehabilitation Hospital significantly contributed (р < 0.05) to improving the quality of life of stroke patients in the residual stroke period.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebrovascular diseases (CBVDs) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are interrelated and cumbersome global health burdens. However, the relationship between edible oils consumption and mortality burdens of CBVDs and DM has not yet been evaluated. This review aims to explore correlations between per capita mortality burdens of CBVDs and DM, as well as food consumption of palm or soya oils in 11 randomly selected countries in 2005, 2010, and 2016. METHODS After obtaining data on food consumption of palm and soya oils and mortality burdens of CBVDs and DM, correlations between the consumption of oils and mortality burdens of diseases were explored. RESULTS There was a positive correlation between the consumption of soya oil with the mortality burden of CBVDs in Australia, Switzerland, and Indonesia, as well as the mortality burden of DM in the USA. The consumption of palm oil had a positive correlation with the mortality burden of DM in Jordan only. CONCLUSIONS Food consumption of soya oil in several countries possibly contributes to the mortality burden of CBVDs or DM more than food consumption of palm oil, which could be a possible risk factor in the mortality burdens of CBVDs and DM.

Abstract
Numerous reports have shown that dysfunction of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) serves a critical function in the development of cardiovascular disease, including coronary heart disease (CHD). microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) have been reported to play important roles in regulating the function of VSMCs. The present study aimed to determine the role of miR-24-3p in VSMCs and to uncover the underlying mechanism. The expression of miR-24-3p in the peripheral blood samples of CHD patients was measured by reverse transcription-quantitative (RT-q)PCR. It was found that the level of miR-24-3p in the peripheral blood of patients with CHD was significantly upregulated compared with that in healthy controls. A dual luciferase reporter assay was performed to determine whether Bcl-2-like protein 11 (Bcl-2L11) was a target gene of miR-24-3p, and it was identified that Bcl-2L11 was a direct target of miR-24-3p. The mRNA level and protein expression of Bcl-2L11 in the peripheral blood of patients with CHD were measured by RT-qPCR and western blotting, respectively. The findings suggested that Bcl-2L11 was downregulated in the peripheral blood of patients with CHD. In addition, it was found that downregulation of miR-24-3p suppressed VSMC proliferation and promoted VSMC apoptosis, while the effects of the miR-24-3p inhibitor on cell viability and apoptosis were reversed by Bcl-2L11-small interfering (si)RNA. Additionally, downregulation of miR-24-3p increased the levels of Bcl-2L11, caspase-3 and Bax, and decreased Bcl-2 expression in VSMCs; these changes were abolished by Bcl-2L11-siRNA. In conclusion, the aforementioned results indicated that miR-24-3p was an important regulator in VSMC proliferation and apoptosis by targeting Bcl-2L11, which suggested that miR-24-3p might be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of CHD.

Abstract
UNLABELLED All parameters of the quality of life of patients after cerebral stroke are reduced. There is relatively little information about the impact of stroke and the features of rehabilitation technologies in the acute period on the quality of life of patients in the period of residual events. AIM The study of quality of life indicators for patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke after three years from the onset of the condition, as well as the incidence of recurrent strokes and mortality in the residual period, depending on the rehabilitation methods in the acute period. MATERIAL AND METHODS In order to identify the frequency of recurrent strokes and the mortality rate in the post-stroke period, a three-year prospective observation of 330 patients (220 patients of the main group, whose early rehabilitation was optimized using various methods of reflexotherapy, and 110 patients of the comparison group who underwent traditional pharmacotherapy in combination with physiotherapy and Exercise therapy) was performed. To study the quality of life (using the MOS SF-36 questionnaire), 140 people from the main group and 40 from the comparison group were selected by random sampling. RESULTS The main group showed a lower incidence of recurrent stroke episodes (3.2%) and mortality (1.8%) compared with the comparison group (12.7 and 13.6%, respectively). Comparison of quality of life indicators in the studied groups revealed higher values for all subscales of the MOS SF-36 questionnaire in the group of patients who received reflexotherapy in the acute period of ischemic stroke, and for several subscales, the differences were statistically significant: in the acute period, by subscales RP (p<0.05), GH (p<0.05), VT (p<0.05), SF (p<0.05), RE (p<0.05), MH (p<0.05), after three years - by subscales PF (p<0.05), GH (p<0.05), VT (p<0.01) and MH (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Thus, optimization of early rehabilitation by including from the first days reflexotherapy methods helps to improve the indicators of both the physical and mental components of the patients' health not only in the acute but also in the long term, and also helps to reduce the frequency of repeated strokes and the mortality rate in the post-stroke period.

Abstract
To study cardiovascular diseases, the isolation and culture of functional endothelial cells are very important. This study uncovered a novel approach to isolate and culture endothelial cells. The thoracic aorta was collected from Wistar rats with the attached tissue clearly removed. These aorta segments were seeded onto a six-welled plate with the endothelium facing down and removed 2 days after endothelial sprouting started. The endothelial cells were harvested until 80% uneven confluence and cultured for another two passages for use in the following assays: immunofluorescence and flow cytometry assays for endothelial marker expression (CD31 and von Willebrand factor [vWF]), the Dil-labeled acetylated low-density lipoprotein (Dil-Ac-LDL) uptake assay, the tube formation assay, the Hoechst staining apoptosis assay, the β-galactosidase staining assay for cell senescence, and the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay for cell viability. Morphologically, the endothelial cells started to migrate away from the aorta after 50 to 72 hours of culture, showing a cobblestone-like structure. The cultured cells expressed high levels of CD31 and vWF, 94.65% of the cells were positive for CD31, and most of the cells showed low-density lipoprotein uptake. They were able to form tube-like structures in vitro and were negatively stained for β-galactosidase or Hoechst staining. Importantly, the cells at passages 3 and 10 showed similar levels of CCK-8, β-galactosidase, Hoechst staining, uptake of Dil-Ac-LDL, and capillary tube formation. This novel technique is useful to isolate and culture rat aortic endothelial cells for future studies of endothelial functions and biology. In addition, primary vascular endothelial cells at passages 3 to 10 are suitable for experiments.
