Low incidence of cannibalism among brood parasitic cuckoo catfish embryos

Brood parasites have demanding needs of host resources. Brood parasitic offspring are highly competitive and frequently cause the failure of host broods and the survival of a single parasitic offspring. Accordingly, virulent brood parasites lay a single egg in the same host nest to avoid sibling competition. In the cuckoo catfish (Synodontis multipunctatus), which parasitize mouthbrooding cichlid fishes in Lake Tanganyika, the modes of host and parasite oviposition lead to frequent cases of multiple parasitism. We experimentally tested the prediction that multiple parasitism leads to frequent cannibalism among offspring. Cuckoo catfish embryos prey upon host offspring to obtain nourishment during their 3-week development in the host buccal cavity and may also consume conspecific embryos. The potential benefits of cannibalism in the system are, therefore, twofold; to decrease competition for limited resources (i.e., host brood with rich yolk sacs) and to directly obtain nourishment by consuming rivals. We found that cannibalism indeed provided measurable benefits in terms of increased growth of the cannibals, but cannibalism was rare and typically occurred once all host offspring had been consumed. This implies that cannibalism among cuckoo catfish embryos emerges to mitigate starvation rather than eliminate competition.

Effect of victim relatedness on cannibalistic behaviour of ladybird beetle, Cheilomenes sexmaculata Fabricius (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Cannibalism is taxonomically widespread and has a large impact on the individuals' fitness and population dynamics. Thus, identifying how the rates of cannibalism are affected by different ecological cues is crucial for predicting species evolution and population dynamics. In current experiment, we investigated how victim relatedness affects the cannibalistic tendencies of different life stages of ladybird, Cheilomenes sexmaculata, which is highly cannibalistic. We provided larval instars and newly emerged adults of C. sexmaculata with a choice of sibling, half-sibling and non-sibling conspecific eggs as victim of cannibalism. First victim cannibalised and latency to cannibalise were observed along with total number of victims cannibalised after 24 h. First preference of victim did not differ with life stages of the cannibals though the number of victims cannibalized did increase with advancement in stage. Percent egg cannibalism also varied significantly with life stage and victim relatedness. First and second instars tend to cannibalise more percentage of sibling and non-sibling eggs while third instars cannibalised more percentage of non-sibling eggs; fourth instars and adults on the other hand cannibalised highest percentage of eggs irrespective of their relatedness. Insignificant effect of victim relatedness was observed on latency to cannibalise eggs, though it varied significantly with the cannibal's life stage. Shortest latency to cannibalise was recorded for first instars and longest for adults and second instars. In conclusion, kin recognition and avoidance of cannibalism is stage-specific, with fourth instar and newly emerged adults being less discriminatory as compared to early stages owing to increased evolutionary survival pressure.

Linking behavioural type with cannibalism in Eurasian perch

The propensity to kill and consume conspecifics (cannibalism) varies greatly between and within species, but the underlying mechanisms behind this variation remain poorly understood. A rich literature has documented that consistent behavioural variation is ubiquitous across the animal kingdom. Such inter-individual behavioural differences, sometimes referred to as personality traits, may have far-reaching ecological consequences. However, the link between predator personality traits and the propensity to engage in cannibalistic interactions remains understudied. Here, we first quantified personality in Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis), measured as activity (time spent moving) and sociability (time spent near conspecifics). We then gave perch of contrasting behavioural types the option to consume either conspecific or heterospecific (roach, Rutilus rutilus) prey. Individual perch characterized by a social-active behavioural phenotype (n = 5) selected roach before being cannibalistic, while asocial-inactive perch (n = 17) consumed conspecific and heterospecific prey evenly. Thus, asocial-inactive perch expressed significantly higher rates of cannibalism as compared to social-active individuals. Individual variation in cannibalism, linked to behavioural type, adds important mechanistic understanding to complex population and community dynamics, and also provides insight into the diversity and maintenance of animal personality.

Effects of a single-phase fasting period and subsequent re-feeding on compensatory growth, digestive enzyme activities, and antioxidant capacity of Sobaity (Sparidentex hasta) and Yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus)

An eight-week research was carried out to examine the influence of fasting (FA) and refeeding (RF) episodes on the compensatory growth responses (CGR) in sobaity (Sparidentex hasta, 10 g) and yellowfin seabreams (Acanthopagrus latus, 4.3 g) juveniles. Fish were fed with a commercial feed (contained 500 g kg−1 crude protein and 150 g kg−1 crude lipid) as following regimes: control (C, fish were fed three times every day), T1 (two weeks of feeding, one week of FA, and five weeks of RF), T2 (one week of feeding, two weeks of FA and five weeks of RF) and T3 (three weeks of FA and five weeks of RF). Two hundred and forty S. hasta juveniles were stocked into twelve 300-L tanks (20 fish tank−1), and 360 A. latus juveniles were allocated into other 12 tanks (30 fish tank−1). Each treatment was carried out in triplicates for each species, and each tank held only one of the species. The experiment was carried out for both species simultaneously. The weight and length of fish from the four groups were measured individually after the third week (after FA episode) and after eight weeks (after RF episode). After finishing the RF episode (eighth week), six fish of each tank were sacrificed with an overdose of 2-phenoxyethanol (1000 mg L−1), and the liver and the whole gut of the sacrificed fish were sampled, dissected, and then kept in a freezer (−80 °C) until further analyses. Survival rate was decreased in S. hasta juveniles with increasing the FA period mainly due to their cannibalistic behavior, which was triggered by starvation, but it was not affected in A. latus. The fasted groups in both species were significantly lost their weight after FA episodes. After five weeks of RF, S. hasta showed full compensatory growth response; meanwhile A. latus had a partial compensatory response (P<0.05). Hepatosomatic index value decreased after the FA period in both species, but it was restored to the normal level after RF phase. The activities of liver catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase were increased in T2 group in S. hasta, but liver antioxidant enzymes were not affected in A. latus. In both species, the amount of the lipid peroxidation was significantly increased in the liver of fish groups subjected to T2 or T3 compared to T1 and control groups (P < 0.05). Liver alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in S. hasta fasted for two weeks were higher than the other groups. The activities of trypsin, chymotrypsin, α-amylase, and lipase in S. hasta fasted for a week (T1) were higher than control. In addition, the activities of trypsin and chymotrypsin in A. latus fasted for two or three weeks were lower than C and T1 groups. The activity of ALP was increased with increasing FA period in both species. The findings of the present study showed that single-phase FA episodes reduce survival and induce oxidative stress in S. hasta juveniles; meanwhile A. latus juveniles did not show complete compensatory growth after RF episode.
