Abstract
Surveillance of iodine intake is important because either inadequate or excessive amount of iodine may lead to thyroid malfunctions. Herein, we report a method for fast iodide quantification based on a plasmonic hot electron-driven chemical reaction, which occurs on Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) coated with p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) molecules. Upon resonant light illumination, hot electron-hole pairs are generated in the NPs. The hot holes capture iodide ions (I-) and form AgI which decomposes under light; while the hot electrons are shifted to the electron orbital (LUMO) of PNTP and trigger its reduction to p-aminothiophenol (PATP). By measuring characteristic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) peaks of PNTP and PATP, the concentration of I- in water can be quantitatively determined, with a linear response in the 0.5-20 μM range and a detection limit of 0.30 μM. The Au@Ag nanosensor was then applied for I- detection in various biofluids including urine, serum and saliva, exhibiting superior detection sensitivity and high selectivity. This sensing assay requires a small sample volume of ∼10 μL and completes the entire detection process in ∼2 min, and therefore holds significant potential for application in point-of-care settings.

Abstract
A simple colorimetric method was developed for sensitive and selective detections of I- and Hg2+. Histidine stabilized gold nanoclusters (His-AuNCs) were synthesized and catalyzed the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to a blue product. As a strong ligand toward gold, iodide (I-) attached to the surface of the His-AuNCs and significantly enhanced the oxidase-like activity of the His-AuNCs. Based on this enhancement, a sensitive colorimetric response toward I- was obtained. Furthermore, the strong interaction between Hg2+ and I- was adopted for an indirect Hg2+ detection. Under the optimal conditions, the platform presented high selectivity for the determinations of I- and Hg2+ in the ranges 0.02-1 µM and 0.05-0.8 µM, with detection limits as 3.3 nM and 8 nM respectively. This colorimetric assay was successfully applied for analysis of real samples.

Abstract
Fluorenone-based fluorescent and colorimetric sensors 1 and 2 have been developed that displayed selective detection of iodide ions in the presence of interferences. Sensors displayed the fluorescence emission enhancement response toward I- with detection limits of 8.0 and 11.0 nM, respectively, which is accomplished through inhibition of intramolecular charge transfer and C=N isomerization. Excellent sensitivity and unique fluorescence enhancement response of sensors toward I- make them superior because most of the previously reported iodide sensors are based on the fluorescence quenching mechanism and are less sensitive. The sensing potential of sensors toward I- ions was investigated through 1H NMR titration, dynamic light scattering, Job's plots, and density functional theory analysis. Further, sensors displayed reversible behavior by the alternate addition of I- and Cu2+ ions that substantiate their role as recyclable sensors for the on-site detection of I- ions. Advantageously, fluorescence enhancement response of sensors was favorably used for fluorescence imaging of I- in live HeLa cells and the design of the logic gate. These sensors were successfully applied in diversified applications such as the preparation of sensors' coated paper strips and the determination of I- ions in blood serum, food, and real water samples.

Abstract
MOFs with their accessible voids/channels have been explored immensely for sensing due to their exclusive host-guest chemistry. However, unavailability of pores/voids in interpenetrating non-porous MOFs limits their applications in sensing. We herein report for the first time, hitherto, a non-porous MOF with an interpenetrating ladder structure for iodide sensing. A Co-bpe MOF was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction between cobalt nitrate and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) in methanol and tested against colorimetric sensing of halides. The supramolecular structure of the Co-bpe MOF was stabilized through strong hydrogen bonding. We propose a double nucleophilic substitution reaction mechanism for iodide detection, which is one of its own kind. While Co-bpe showed a significant color change from dark maroon to dark green in the presence of iodide, the rest of halides did not display any pronounced colorimetric effect. The limit of detection (LOD) of this material was found to be 2.7 × 10-7 M. This article focuses on the equal competency of non-porous MOF materials with the porous MOFs in sensing applications.

Abstract
This Minireview covers the latest developments of chemosensors based on transition-metal receptors and organic fluorophores with specific binding sites for the luminescent detection and recognition of iodide in aqueous media and real samples. In all selected examples within the last decade (made-post 2010), the iodide sensing and recognition is probed by monitoring real-time changes of the fluorescence or phosphorescence properties of the chemosensors. This review highlights effective strategies to iodide sensing from a structural approach where the iodide recognition/sensing process, through supramolecular interactions as coordination bonds, hydrogen bonds, halogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, is transduced into an optical change easily measurable. The selective iodide sensing is an active field of research with global interest due to the importance of iodide in biological, medicinal, industrial, environmental and chemical processes.

Abstract
A label-free fluorescent nanoprobe for iodide ion (I-) detection was developed based on the direct fluorescence quenching of spermine-functionalized carbon dots (SC-dots), whether in complex biological fluids or living cells. The positively charged SC-dots were fabricated via one-step microwave synthesis and exhibited excellent optical properties. Due to the strong quenching ability of I-, SC-dots were utilized for I- detection with high sensitivity and excellent selectivity, which offered a relatively low detection limit of 0.18 μM. This strategy was also successfully applied for I- detections in human serum and HeLa cells. The detection process is facile, highly sensitive and selective, providing a new insight into the potential applications of SC-dots for anion nanoprobe designs in clinical diagnosis and other biologically related areas. Abstract
Potentiometric probes used in direct potentiometry are attractive sensing tools. They give information on ion activities, which is often uniquely useful. If, instead, concentrations are desired as sensor output, the ionic strength of the sample must be precisely known, which is often not possible. Here, for the first time, direct potentiometry can be made to report concentrations, rather than activities. It is demonstrated for the detection of monovalent anionic species by using a self-referencing Ag/AgI pulstrode as the reference element instead of a traditional reference electrode. This reference pulstrode releases a discrete quantity of iodide ions from the electrode and the resulting reference potential varies with the activity coefficient of iodide. The effects of activity coefficient on the indicator and reference electrode are therefore compensated and the observed cell potential may now be described in a Nernstian manner against anion concentration, rather than activity. Theoretical simulations and experimental results support the validity of this approach. For most monovalent anions of practical relevance, the potential difference between this approach and from a traditional activity coefficient calculation is less than 0.5 mV. The concept is validated with an all-solid-state nitrate sensor as well as a commercial fluoride-selective electrode, giving Nernstian responses in different ionic strength backgrounds against concentration without the need for correcting activity coefficients or liquid junction potentials.

Abstract
In this work, novel photoluminescent Ag nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with red emission are synthesized and successfully used for detecting iodide ion (I-). The dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) is used as the stabilizing agent and beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) is used as the auxiliary stabilizing agent. DHLA and β-CD are combined with Ag atoms by the formation of AgS bonds and hydrophobic interaction, respectively. Functionalization of β-CD endows good photoluminescent properties and solubility in water to the Ag NCs. The obtained DHLA and β-CD-protected Ag NCs (DHLA/β-CD-Ag NCs) are spherical and display a dispersed state. However, the DHLA/β-CD-Ag NCs are aggregated in the presence of I-, accompanied by the decrease in their fluorescence intensity. Because the integrity of β-CD cavities is retained on the surface of DHLA/β-CD-Ag NCs, which preserves their capability for I- host-guest recognition, the DHLA/β-CD-Ag NCs combine with I- through the formation of inclusion complexes. Based on this phenomenon, the prepared DHLA/β-CD-Ag NCs can be designed as a novel fluorescent probe for I- detection. The limit of detection (LOD) is calculated as 0.06 μM, indicating that it is an ideal probe for I- detection in practical applications.

Abstract
Atmospheric iodine plays a relevant role in climate change. Bearing in mind that most of this iodine comes from the oceans, analytical methods capable of determining iodine in a challenging matrix as seawater are necessary. In this work, the first method capable of direct determination of total inorganic iodine in seawater at subnanomolar level based on mixed-mode liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) without any sample treatment is presented. Analytical characteristics of the developed method were studied in terms of linear range, limits of detection and quantification, precision, trueness, matrix effect, and robustness. The detection limit for iodide was as low as 0.16 nM, injecting 5 μL of seawater without any sample treatment and the working linear range of four orders of magnitude was wide enough to cover the broad concentration range observed in seawater samples. Average values for repeatability and intermediate precision were 4.1% and 8.1%, respectively. The suitability of the method was demonstrated through its application to the analysis of several types of samples, including seawater samples taken at different locations along the Spanish Mediterranean coast and some domestic iodized salts. According to the results obtained, the method developed is rapid, easy to apply and to be automated, avoids sample treatment and requires only few microliters of sample. Furthermore, it has a low detection limit and allows the quantification of inorganic iodine over a wide concentration range.

Abstract
Raw water (RW) from the Bangkok and Sing Buri water treatment plants located on the Chao Phraya River, river water, domestic wastewater (WW), and treated wastewater (TWW) from two wastewater treatment plants in Thailand were collected three times to investigate disinfection by-products' (DBPs) formation potential (FP) including trihalomethane FP (THMFP), iodo-THMFP (I-THMFP), haloacetonitriles FP (HANFP), and trichloronitromethane FP (TCNMFP). High THMFP levels were observed in river water, WW, and TWW. Considering average value, the THMFP of TWW was about two times higher than that of RW. Relatively high levels of I-THMFP were found in WW and TWW. The I-THMFP of TWW was three to seven times higher than that of RW. The HANFP of TWW was one to three times higher than that of RW. High levels of TCNMFP were found in WW and TWW. TCNMFP of TWW was six to thirteen times higher than that of RW. The discharge of TWW to RW must be prevented and controlled. The moderately positive linear relationship was obtained between dissolved organic carbon and TCNMFP in TWW. Considering measured weight concentration, THMFP was found as the highest DBPs. The highest lethal concentration 50-weighted and lowest cytotoxicity-weighted concentrations of DBPs were determined for HANFP.

Abstract
Tannic acid-coated copper nanoclusters (CuNCs@TA) were synthesized and used quantitatively to analyze iodine in kelp. Compared with other methods for iodine detection, the proposed method showed excellent performance. The iodine-induced linear decrease in the fluorescence intensity of CuNCs@TA allowed the quantitative detection of iodine in the range 20-100 μM, and the limit of detection for iodine was 18 nM. The probe can be used for the determination of iodine in real samples with reliable and accurate results. Modified Stern-Volmer equation and thermodynamic calculation studies were used to discuss the quenching mechanism.

Abstract
A basket-type G-quadruplex (GQ) fluorescent oligonucleotide (OND) probe is designed to detect iodides dependent on thymine-Hg(II)-thymine (T-Hg(II)-T) base pairs and the intrinsic fluorescence quenching capacity of GQ. In the presence of Hg(II) ions (Hg2+), the two hexachloro-fluorescein-labeled ONDs form a hairpin structure and the fluorophores are dragged close to the GQ, leading to fluorescence quenching of the probe due to photoinduced electron transfer. Upon addition of iodide anions, Hg2+ are extracted from T-Hg(II)-T complexes which attributes to the stronger binding with iodide anions, resulting in the fluorescence recovery. Through performing the fluorescence quenching and recovery processes, this probe developed a fluorescence turn-on sensor for iodide anions determination over a linear range of 20-200nmol/L with a limit of detection of 5nmol/L. The practical use of the turn-on technology was demonstrated by its application in determination of iodides in water, food, pharmaceutical products and biological samples.

Abstract
The dilution controlled aggregation enhanced emission of spherically aggregated form of a triazole based probe dies down upon detecting iodide over other inorganic anions. The sensing is realised as a dynamic quenching mechanism dominated event. Being highly selective for iodide, the probe finds application in the detection of iodide in human urine.

Abstract
A simple colorimetric nanoprobe based on virgin silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was developed for the selective detection of iodide and bromide ions via aggregation and anti-aggregation mechanism. With addition of I(-) ions, virgin AgNPs, in presence of Fe(3+), showed perceptible color change from yellow to colorless along with disappearance of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of AgNPs at 400 nm. But in presence of Cr(3+), AgNPs turned yellow upon addition of I(-)and Br(-) anions. The developed virgin AgNPs probe showed high specificity and selectivity with the detection limits down to 0.32 μM and 1.32 μM for I(-) ions via two different mechanistic routes. Also, the designed probe detects Br(-) with a detection limit down to 1.67 μM.

Abstract
The human body requires iodine to develop and maintain proper metabolic balance. Worldwide, iodine deficiency affects two billion people and is the leading preventable cause of intellectual disability. Small amounts of iodine are needed for good health. However, large doses can eventually cause iodide goitre, hypothyroidism or myxedema. Children are especially sensitive to the effects of iodine. Because humans can be exposed to iodide via several different food chains, the development of on-site, real-time and reliable sensors for iodide is of great interest to ensure early diagnosis and improve management. We propose here a simple and low cost, yet sensitive and selective fluorescent ‘turn-off-on’ assay for rapid determination of iodide based on a combined carbon nanodots (CDs) and Hg2+ system. The fluorescence of CDs that was quenched by Hg2+ was restored and ‘turned on’ in the presence of iodide, which triggered a competitive reaction among CDs, Hg2+ and iodide. The recovered fluorescence intensity varied linearly with the concentration of iodide in the range of 0.05–5 μmol L–1, with a limit of detection as low as 46 nmol L–1. This approach shows excellent selectivity for iodine over the other anions.

Abstract
The recently emerging gold nanoclusters (GNC) are of major importance for both basic science studies and practical applications. Based on its surface-induced fluorescence properties, we investigated the potential use of Au(25)(SG)(18) (GSH: glutathione) as a fluorescent iodide sensor. The current detection limit of 400 nM, which can possibly be further enhanced by optimizing the conditions, and excellent selectivity among 12 types of anion (F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), NO(3)(-), ClO(4)(-), HCO(3)(-), IO(3)(-), SO(4)(2-), SO(3)(2-), CH(3)COO(-) and C(6)H(5)O(7)(3-)) make Au(25)(SG)(18) a good candidate for iodide sensing. Furthermore, our work has revealed the particular sensing mechanism, which was found to be affinity-induced ratiometric and enhanced fluorescence (abbreviated to AIREF), which has rarely been reported previously and may provide an alternative strategy for devising nanoparticle-based sensors.
