A comparison between the determination of free Pb(II) by two techniques: Absence of gradients and Nernstian equilibrium stripping and resin titration

Characterization of Neodymium Speciation in the Presence of Fulvic Acid by Ion Exchange Technique and Single Particle ICP-MS

It has been well known that the free ion concentration of metals plays a vital role in metal bioavailability. However, measurement of this fraction is still not easy over years of development. Nowadays, rare earth elements (REEs) are drawing more attentions as an emerging contaminant due to their wide applications in our daily life. To analyze the free ion concentration of neodymium (Nd), we adopted ion-exchange technique (IET) to investigate the changes on Nd free ion concentration in the presence of fulvic acid (FA). With the dynamic mode of IET analysis, the concentrations of Nd free ion were in the range of 0.85-36.8 × 10^-8 M at the total Nd concentration of 5 × 10^-7 M when FA varied from 0.4 to 10 M. However, these concentrations were 3-58 times higher than the one calculated by WHAM 7.0, which may be due to the particulate Nd spontaneously formed in solution. With single particle ICP-MS analysis, we found 0.25%-2.36% of Nd was in the form of colloids when the total Nd concentrations varied from 8.5 × 10^-9 to 4.7 × 10^-7 M, with the average particle sizes in the range of 26.5-39.2 nm. The presence of FA significantly decreased the number of Nd colloids, but increased the average particle size. Under the TEM, we found that Nd colloids were amorphous, with the size less than 200 nm. The present study provided a relatively new perspective on REE speciation in water. The natural organic matters not only affect the free ion concentration of Nd, but also influenced the size and numbers of Nd colloids in solution.

Metal complexation capacity of Antarctic lacustrine sediments

The purpose of this study is to implement a work that is a part of a project funded by the Italian National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA, Piano Nazionale di Ricerche in Antartide) within the main thematic focus "Chemical Contamination-Global Change". This research was devoted to detect and characterize micro and nano components with strong complexing capability towards metal ions at trace level in sea water, lakes and lacustrine sediments, sampled during the XXII expedition of PNRA. In particular, in the present work, the sorption complexation capacity of an Antarctic lacustrine sediments toward Cu(II) and Pb(II) is described. The characterization of the sorption was undertaken, studying kinetics and isotherm profiles. The lake here considered is Tarn Flat in the area of Terra Nova Bay. The sorption equilibria of Cu(II) and Pb(II) on the lacustrine sediments were reached in about 10 h, and they were best modelled by the Langmuir equation. Preliminary, to establish if the data here obtained were consistent with those reported for the same area in other expeditions, a common multivariate techniques, namely the principal component analysis (PCA), was applied and finally the consistency of the data has been confirmed.

Free indium concentration determined with AGNES

Indium is increasingly used in electronic devices, from which it can be mobilized towards environmental compartments. Speciation of In in waters is important for its direct ecotoxicological effects, as well as for the fate of this element in the environment (e.g. fluxes from or towards sediments). Free indium concentrations in the environment can be extremely low due to hydrolysis, especially important in trivalent cations, to precipitation and to complexation with different ligands. In this work, the free indium concentration (which is a toxicologically and geochemically relevant fraction) in aqueous solutions at pH3 has been measured with an adapted version of the electroanalytical technique AGNES (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping). Speciation measurements in mixtures of indium with the ligands NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) and oxalate indicate that the values of their stability constants in the NIST46.6 database are less adequate than those published in some more recent literature. The extraordinary lability and mobility of In-oxalate complexes allow the measuring of free indium concentrations below nmol/L in just 25s of deposition time.

Determination of the complexing capacity of wine for Zn using the absence of gradients and nernstian equilibrium stripping technique

The complexing capacity of synthetic (0.011 M tartrate in 13.5% ethanol) and real wine (Raimat Abadia) in titrations with added total Zn concentrations up to 0.03 M has been determined following the free Zn concentrations with AGNES (absence of gradients and Nernstian equilibrium stripping) technique. A correction to find the preconcentration factor or gain (Y(1)) really applied at each one of the ionic strengths reached due to Zn additions along the titration has been applied. The standard implementation of AGNES to real wine led to the observation of two anomalous behaviors: (a) an increasingly negative current in the deposition stage (labeled as "HER" effect) and (b) a minimum in the currents of the stripping stage plot (labeled as the "dip" effect). A practical strategy to apply AGNES avoiding the dip effect has been developed to quantify properly free Zn concentrations. The van den Berg-Ružic-Lee linearization method (assuming the existence of just 1:1 complexes) has been adapted to consider the dilution effect and the ionic strength changes. Aggregated stability constants and total ligand concentrations have been calculated from synthetic and wine titration data. The found complexing capacity in the studied wine (c(T,L) = 0.0179 ± 0.0007 M) indicates the contribution of ligands other than tartrate (which is confirmed to be the main one).

Determination of free Zn2+ concentration in synthetic and natural samples with AGNES (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping) and DMT (Donnan Membrane Technique)

The determination of free Zn(2+) ion concentration is a key in the study of environmental systems like river water and soils, due to its impact on bioavailability and toxicity. AGNES (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping) and DMT (Donnan Membrane Technique) are emerging techniques suited for the determination of free heavy metal concentrations, especially in the case of Zn(2+), given that there is no commercial Ion Selective Electrode. In this work, both techniques have been applied to synthetic samples (containing Zn and NTA) and natural samples (Rhine river water and soils), showing good agreement. pH fluctuations in DMT and N(2)/CO(2) purging system used in AGNES did not affect considerably the measurements done in Rhine river water and soil samples. Results of DMT in situ of Rhine river water are comparable to those of AGNES in the lab. The comparison of this work provides a cross-validation for both techniques.

Determination of the total concentration and speciation of metal ions in river, estuarine and seawater samples

Different natural water samples were investigated to determine the total concentration and the distribution of species for Cu(II), Pb(II), Al(III) and U(VI). The proposed method, named resin titration (RT), was developed in our laboratory to investigate the distribution of species for metal ions in complex matrices. It is a competition method, in which a complexing resin competes with natural ligands present in the sample to combine with the metal ions. In the present paper, river, estuarine and seawater samples, collected during a cruise in Adriatic Sea, were investigated. For each sample, two RTs were performed, using different complexing resins: the iminodiacetic Chelex 100 and the carboxylic Amberlite CG50. In this way, it was possible to detect different class of ligands. Satisfactory results have been obtained and are commented on critically. They were summarized by principal component analysis (PCA) and the correlations with physicochemical parameters allowed one to follow the evolution of the metals along the considered transect. It should be pointed out that, according to our findings, the ligands responsible for metal ions complexation are not the major components of the water system, since they form considerably weaker complexes.

Conditional affinity spectra of Pb2+-humic acid complexation from data obtained with AGNES

The new electroanalytical technique AGNES (Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium Stripping) has been applied to follow Pb2+ complexation to Purified Aldrich Humic Acid. A refined methodology of AGNES, allowing considerably larger gains, reached free metal ion concentrations down to subnanomolar values in a reasonable deposition time due to the lability and mobility of these complexes. Further insights into the meaning of the binding data, fitted to a NICA (Non Ideal Competitive Adsorption) isotherm, can be obtained with the concept of conditional affinity spectrum (CAS). For this purpose, we present the analytical expression for the CAS of NICA isotherm and show the CAS distributions for the Pb binding at fixed pH. Results reveal that the underlying spectra of each elementary distribution of the bimodal NICA evolve with pH yielding different overlapping and nonsymmetrical distributions. A non-negligible occupation of phenolic and carboxylic sites by Pb2+ takes place in the range of 4 < pH < 9.

Measurement of free zinc concentration in wine with AGNES

AGNES (absence of gradients and Nernstian equilibrium stripping), a voltammetric technique recently introduced to measure free metal concentration in solution and checked with different natural and synthetic aqueous media, has been applied here to determine free Zn concentration in wine. The content of ethanol in a solution increases its viscosity, and, so, the diffusion coefficient decreases. Another added effect in ethanolic solutions is the increase of the activity of the metal ions, due to the decrease of the permittivity in the alcoholic medium with respect to the aqueous one. With this taken into account, a specific methodology has been developed to apply AGNES in ethanolic media. A relevant point in this methodology has been the introduction of a new kind of blank, the EDTA blank, able to be applied in the same natural sample and with the same potential program. The free Zn concentrations of the two wines analyzed, a red and a white Raimat wine, were 4.5(2) x 10 (-7) and 7.2(4) x 10 (-7) M, respectively. These represent around 5% of the total Zn content. In the wine samples analyzed, it was checked that intermetallic formation of Zn-Cu does not affect the measurement of free Zn in a significant way.
