Abstract
Antibiotic proliferation in the environment and their persistent nature is an issue of global concern as they induce antibiotic resistance threatening both human health and the ecosystem. Antibiotics have therefore been categorized as emerging pollutants. Fluoroquinolone (FQs) antibiotics are an emerging class of contaminants that are used extensively in human and veterinary medicine. The recalcitrant nature of fluoroquinolones has led to their presence in wastewater, effluents and water bodies. Even at a low concentration, FQs can stimulate antibacterial resistance. The main sources of FQ contamination include waste from pharmaceutical manufacturing industries, hospitals and households that ultimately reaches the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The conventional WWTPs are unable to completely remove FQs due to their chemical stability. Therefore, the development and implementation of more efficient, economical, convenient treatment and removal technologies are needed to adequately address the issue. This review provides an overview of the technologies available for the removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics from wastewater including adsorptive removal, advanced oxidation processes, removal using non-carbon based nanomaterials, microbial degradation and enzymatic degradation. Each treatment technology is discussed on its merits and limitations and a comparative view is presented on the choice of an advanced treatment process for future studies and implementation. A discussion on the commercialization potential and eco-friendliness of each technology is also included in the review. The importance of metabolite identification and their residual toxicity determination has been emphasized. The last section of the review provides an overview of the policy interventions and regulatory frameworks that aid in retrofitting antibiotics as a central key focus contaminant and thereby defining the discharge limits for antibiotics and establishing safe manufacturing practices.

Abstract
Magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs), consisting of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), have enormous exploration and application potentials due to their superior physical and chemical properties, such as unique magnetism and high enrichment performance. This review concentrates on the rapid advances in the synthesis and application of magnetic carbon nanotubes. Great progress has been made in the preparation of MCNTs by developing methods including chemical vapor deposition, pyrolysis procedure, sol-gel process, template-based synthesis, filling process and hydrothermal/solvothermal method. Various applications of MCNTs as a mediator of the adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction, sensors, antibacterial agents, and imaging system contrast agents, and in drug delivery and catalysis are discussed. In order to overcome the drawbacks of MCNTs, such as sidewall damage, lack of convincing quantitative characterization methods, toxicity and environmental impact, and deficiency of extraction performance, researchers proposed some solutions in recent years. We systematically review the latest advances in MCNTs and discuss the direction of future development.

Abstract
RATIONALE Fruit juices are naturally acidic, and the acidity is due to the formation of various organic acids formed in several metabolic processes. The content of acids varies due to various processing parameters during the preparation of fruit juices and their packaging for commercialization. Quantitative determination of organic acids provides the necessary information leading to changes occurred during processing. METHODS The organic acids were extracted by ion-pair dispersive solid-phase extraction by multiwalled carbon nanotubes and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and in situ butylation. RESULTS The developed analytical method was validated, and the obtained results showed a linearity in the range of 0.5-5000 μg/L levels of the analytes with limit of detection and quantification values of 2-10 and 5-20 μg/L, respectively. The inter- and intra-day reproducibilities are less than 15% with 80%-98% recoveries and less than 20% matrix effect. The developed method was used for the quantitative determination of organic acids present in fresh and packaged apple, grape, orange, and pomegranate juice samples. The content of organic acids was observed in the range of 0.26-3793 μg/L. Pimelic acid was not detected in any of the analyzed fruit juices. Fumaric acid (FA) was observed to be a major organic diacid present in the natural fruit juices. The results indicated that the processing of fruit juices for packaging decreases the content of organic acids in fruits. CONCLUSIONS The developed GC-MS-based analytical method for the analysis of organic acids has good sensitivity and reproducibility for the quantitative determination of various organic acids in fruit juices. FA was observed to be the major carboxylic acid present in fruits. The processed juice samples possess the lowest concentration of organic acids, suggesting that processing has a significant effect on the concentration of organic acids in fruits.

Abstract
An excellent magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MMWCNT) containing carboxyl material modified with ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles was synthesized as the adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of five heavy metal ions (Pb2+, Cu2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Cr4+) in water samples followed by on-line inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection. The characteristics of the adsorbent were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Some factors affecting extraction efficiency including pH of sample solution, the amount of adsorbent, extraction method and time, concentration and volume of desorption solvent, desorption time and evaluation of coexisting ions were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, good linearity (r ≥ 0.9951) was obtained within the range of 0.1-50.0 ng·mL-1. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 4.0-25.0 ng·L-1 and 15.0-80.0 ng·L-1, respectively. And satisfactory recoveries of five heavy metal ions ranged from 81.11% to 105.53% were acquired, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were no more than 6.05%. The MMWCNT synthesized had strong adsorption force for the five investigated heavy metal ions, respectively. Hence, the proposed method was so suitable and sensitive that it can be applied to the determination of trace analysis of heavy metals in water samples.

Use of Electrocoagulation for Treatment of Pharmaceutical Compounds in Water/Wastewater: A Review Exploring Opportunities and Challenges. WATER 2021. Abstract
Increasing dependency on pharmaceutical compounds including antibiotics, analgesics, antidepressants, and other drugs has threatened the environment as well as human health. Their occurrence, transformation, and fate in the environment are causing significant concerns. Several existing treatment technologies are there with their pros and cons for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater (PWW). Still, electrocoagulation is considered as the modern and decisive technology for treatment. In the EC process, utilizing electricity (AC/DC) and electrodes, contaminants become coagulated with the metal hydroxide and are separated by co-precipitation. The main mechanism is charge neutralization and adsorption of contaminants on the generated flocs. The range of parameters affects the EC process and is directly related to the removal efficiency and its overall operational cost. This process only could be scaled up on the industrial level if process parameters become optimized and energy consumption is reduced. Unfortunately, the removal mechanism of particular pharmaceuticals and complex physiochemical phenomena involved in this process are not fully understood. For this reason, further research and reviews are required to fill the knowledge gap. This review discusses the use of EC for removing pharmaceuticals and focuses on removal mechanism and process parameters, the cost assessment, and the challenges involved in mitigation.

Abstract
We report the facile hydrothermal synthesis of polyaniline (PANI)-modified molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets to fabricate a novel organic–inorganic hybrid material. The prepared 3D nanomaterial was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. The results indicate the successful synthesis of PANI–MoS2 hybrid material. The PANI–MoS2 was used to study the extraction and preconcentration of trace mercury ions. The experimental conditions were optimized systematically, and the data shows a good Hg(II) adsorption capacity of 240.0 mg g−1 of material. The adsorption of Hg(II) on PANI–MoS2 hybrid material may be attributed to the selective complexation between the–S ion of PANI–MoS2 with Hg(II). The proposed method shows a high preconcentration limit of 0.31 µg L−1 with a preconcentration factor of 640. The lowest trace Hg(II) concentration, which was quantitatively analyzed by the proposed method, was 0.03 µg L−1. The standard reference material was analyzed to determine the concentration of Hg(II) to validate the proposed methodology. Good agreement between the certified and observed values indicates the applicability of the developed method for Hg(II) analysis in real samples. The study suggests that the PANI–MoS2 hybrid material can be used for trace Hg(II) analyses for environmental water monitoring.

Abstract
A simple rapid and efficient deep eutectic solvent-based magnetic colloidal gel (DES-MCG) assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method followed by high performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was established for determination of four sex hormones (including ethinylestradiol, norgestrel, megestrol acetate and medroxyprogesterone acetate) in cosmetic skin care toners. The DES-MCG with the desirable advantages of high adsorbing ability was prepared by combining choline chloride/urea deep eutectic solvent and magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MMWCNTs). The synthesized DES-MCG was characterized using fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The cosmetic skin care toners were concentrated by a rotary evaporator and the obtained solutions were further purified by DES-MCG assisted magnetic solid-phase extraction. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for efficient optimization of the main variables in the extraction procedure. Under the optimized conditions, method detection limits and method quantitation limits were in the range of 1.2-6.6 ng mL-1 and 4.4-26.6 ng mL-1, respectively. The recoveries of the four sex hormones in different cosmetic skin care toners ranged from 80.1% to 118.8% and the precisions were no more than 0.35%. The developed method was successfully applied for the determination of sex hormones in cosmetic skin care toners.

Abstract
Background:
Cadmium (Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+) have acute and chronic effects on humans
and other living organisms. In the present work, new, green and accurate dispersive micro solid-phase
extraction (DμSPE) method for the separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of cadmium
(Cd2+) and lead (Pb2+) ions in various food, water and tobacco samples collected from Saudi Arabia
prior to its Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometric (FAAS) determinations was developed.
Methods:
The proposed method was based on a combination of oxidized multiwalled carbon
nanotubes (O-MWCNTs) with a new chelating agent 5-benzyl-4-[4-methoxybenzylideneamino)-4H-
1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (BMBATT) to enrich and separate trace levels of Cd2+ and Pb2+. The effect of
separation parameters was investigated. The validation of the proposed preconcentration procedure
was performed using certified reference materials.
Results:
Analyte recovery values ranged from 95-102%, indicating that the method is highly accurate.
Furthermore, precision was demonstrated by the relative standard deviation (RSD < 3.0%). The limits
of detection were 0.08 and 0.1 μg L−1 for Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions, respectively. The preconcentration factor
was 200.
Conclusion:
The proposed method was used for the estimation of Cd2+ and Pb2+ ion content in various
real samples, and satisfactory results were obtained. The proposed method has high adsorption
capacity, rapid adsorption equilibrium, extremely low LODs, high preconcentration factors and
shortens the time of sample preparation in comparison to classical SPE.

Abstract
The results of investigations about the polymerization of p-aminophenol in neutral-weak alkaline medium (pH = 7-8) in our lab showed that the produced polymer which was insoluble in water and soluble in methanol has high tendency to form selectively a blue complex with Ni(II). Investigations into the chemical structure of polymer showed that polymer has a special structure, similar to polyamine in which the aromatic rings are connected through O-bridges. Based on these data, it was decided to polymerize p-aminophenol in situ on graphene oxide (GO) and use as a new sorbent for selective separation and preconcentration of trace amount of Ni(II) from water samples. By this, the rate of sorption of Ni(II) will also be increased considerably with respect to GO alone. Resulting composite (GO-Pp-AP) was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, and EDS. The obtained data confirmed the uniform growth of the polymer on the GO and the absence of granular particles. The composite shows high tendency and high rate of sorption of Ni(II) and consequently was utilized for solid phase extraction (SPE) of Ni(II) ions before its determination by flame atomic absorption (FAAS). The effects of important parameters on the recovery of Ni(II) were investigated. The presence of foreign ions has no meaningful effect on the recovery percentage of Ni(II). Under the optimum conditions, limit of detection and relative standard deviation were found to be 0.70 μg L-1 and 1.8% (for n = 6; at 20 μg L-1 of Ni(II)), respectively. Testing the standard reference material and analyzing the spiked real samples exhibit that the procedure can be successfully employed for determination of Ni(II) in natural water and wastewater samples. Abstract
The aquatic systems are among the major sinks for discharged substances, and these substances will likely associate with each other. The present work, therefore, aims to study the transformation of metal ions to nanoparticles by discharged carbonaceous materials of emerging concern (e.g., carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) coexisting in the aqueous environment. Here we undertook a systematic study of the reduction of silver ions by CNT suspensions under sunlight irradiation. The formation rate of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is suppressed by an increasing amount of dissolved oxygen or strong solution acidity, as well as the presence of other cations. The photoreduction of Ag+ by CNTs involves a charge transfer process between Ag+ and the CNTs. The way in which carbonaceous nanomaterial properties influence the formation kinetics, size, and morphology of the AgNPs was examined. An enhanced sunlight-driven formation of AgNPs with highly monodispersity was observed in CNTs with nitrogen-containing functional groups due to their active electrochemical and stabilizing nature. The compiled results reveal the importance of an understanding of not only the inherent environmental behaviors of individual substances but also their interactions with concurrent substances in the environment. We demonstrated that the transformation of silver under sunlight by carbonaceous materials with different characteristics could alter the properties and potential risks of metallic species in aquatic environments.

Abstract
Herein, a graphene-based metal and nitrogen-doped carbon (GNC-Co) composite, derived from zeolite imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)-graphene oxide composites, was successfully developed and applied as an excellent fiber coating for solid phase microextraction (SPME) with enhanced performance. The fabricated carbon has a hierarchically micro/mesoporous structure with a high specific surface area of 123 m2 g-1. The study found that pyrolytic graphene (G) has good adsorption properties for anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene, while pyrolytic ZIF-67 (NC-Co) has good adsorption properties for naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthylene and fluorene. Combined with the advantage of G and NC-Co, the synthesized composite GNC-Co enabled the integration of the unique properties of these two fascinating materials and proved to show better performance in the extraction of all polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Compared to the commercial PDMS fiber, the self-made fiber achieved GC responses about 2-9 times as high as those obtained by the commercial 30 μm PDMS fiber. Furthermore, the self-made fiber obtained low detection limits in the range of 0.01-0.74 ng L-1 and wide linearity under the optimized extraction conditions. Finally, the GNC-Co coated fiber was successfully used for the detection of PAHs in real river water samples, which proved the applicability of the method.

Abstract
In order to prepare the magnetic adsorbent, polymerization of pyrrole is performed in a mixture containing Fe3O4 and FeCl3. FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDAX, BET and VSM techniques are employed to characterize the synthesized adsorbent. The results indicate that a homogeneous film of polypyrrole is formed on the surface of magnetic material. The synthesized adsorbent uptakes 173.16 mg g-1 of Hg2+ from aqueous solution, which is superior to the previously reported results for a similar adsorbent. Magnetic performance of the adsorbent is sufficient to separate the used adsorbent from the solution by use of a magnetic bar placed outside of the vessel. Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, and Sips isotherm models are employed to evaluate the experimental adsorption data. The kinetic models are studied and the experimental data are described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The calculated thermodynamic parameter shows that the sorption process is endothermic and spontaneous. Regeneration of the used adsorbent indicates that more than 90% of the initial capacity remains after regeneration.

Abstract
The present work was designed with the aim to one step simple hydrothermal synthesis of moss like MWCNT-Bi2S3 nanomaterial as solid phase extraction sorbent for separation, preconcentration and determination of copper in tobacco and food samples. Cu(II) ions was strongly retained on the MWCNT-Bi2S3 nanomaterial at the pH 7.0 and was successfully desorbed by using 1.5mL of 4M HNO3. The copper concentration in eluent was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometer. The certified reference material (NC SZC 73033 Scallion) was analyzed for the verification and accuracy of the proposed method. This work was interpreted statistically and found the analytical performance of the proposed method which consist of preconcentration factor (20), limit of quantification (13.1µgL-1) and relative standard deviation (2.2%), respectively. It was concluded that this method was applied for the detection of copper from different types of tobacco and food samples successfully.

Abstract
In this research, multiwall carbon nanotube was magnetized and subsequently functionalized by thiosemicarbazide. After characterization by FTIR, BET, SEM, EDAX, and VSM techniques, the magnetized adsorbent (multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/Fe3O4) was used for removal of Hg2+ from aqueous solutions and the experimental conditions were optimized. The adsorption capacity of 172.83 mg g-1 was obtained at 25 °C and pH = 3 which was superior to the value obtained for initial multiwall carbon nanotube, magnetized sample, and many previously reported values. In the presence of Pb+2 and Cd+2, the adsorbent was selective towards mercury when their concentration was respectively below 50 and 100 mg L-1. The adsorption process was kinetically fast and the equilibration was attained within 60 min with 69.5% of the capacity obtained within 10 min. The used adsorbent was regenerated by HNO3 solution, and the regenerated adsorbent retained 92% of its initial capacity. The magnetic sensitivity of the adsorbent allowed the simple separation of the used adsorbent from the solution by implying an appropriate external magnetic field. The adsorption data was well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating homogeneous and monolayer adsorption of mercury by the adsorbent.
