In situ hydrothermal growth of ZnO/g-C3N4 nanoflowers coated solid-phase microextraction fibers coupled with GC-MS for determination of pesticides residues

pH-responsive dual-emission carbon dots for the ratiometric detection of organophosphorus pesticides in Brassica chinensis and Hg2+ in water

Accurate and rapid monitoring of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) residues is crucial for regulating food safety. Herein, dual-emission carbon dots (de-CDs) were fabricated for the ratiometric detection of OPs and Hg2+. The de-CDs exhibited two emission peaks at 678 and 485 nm when excited with visible light. Interestingly, the fluorescence at 678 nm was significantly quenched by Hg2+ mainly because of the static quenching effect, whereas that at 485 nm exhibited a slight change. More significantly, the quenched fluorescence of the de-CDs recovered remarkably after introducing omethoate, diazinon and malathion. Accordingly, the ratiometric detection of the three OPs and Hg2+ was achieved with high selectivity and robust performance. In addition, the OPs residues assay in Brassica chinensis was successfully performed with satisfactory results. This study not only provides an attractive tool for the simple and rapid assay of OPs but also offers new insights into the fabrication of multi-functional carbon dots.

Aptamer-modified paper-based analytical devices for the detection of food hazards: Emerging applications and future perspective

Food analysis plays a critical role in assessing human health risks and monitoring food quality and safety. Currently, there is a pressing need for a reliable, portable, and quick recognition element for point-of-care testing (POCT) to better serve the demands of on-site food analysis. Aptamer-modified paper-based analytical devices (Apt-PADs) have excellent characteristics of high portability, high sensitivity, high specificity, and on-site detection, which have been widely used and concerned in the field of food safety. The article reviews the basic components and working principles of Apt-PADs, and introduces their representative applications detecting food hazards. Finally, the advantages, challenges, and future directions of Apt-PADs-based sensing performance are discussed, to provide new directions and insights for researchers to select appropriate Apt-PADs according to specific applications.

A MOF nanozyme-mediated acetylcholinesterase-free colorimetric strategy for direct detection of organophosphorus pesticides

Although some simple and rapid colorimetric methods have been developed to detect organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), the difficult extraction and easy denaturation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) are still drawbacks needing to be overcome. Here, we propose a MOF nanozyme-mediated AChE-free colorimetric strategy for the direct detection of OPs. In the presence of OPs (pirimiphos-methyl as a model), the intense blue of oxidized 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) becomes light due to the quenching effect of OPs towards hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) that are generated by the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by the Cu4Co6 ZIF nanozyme with excellent peroxidase (POD)-like activity. The developed colorimetric sensor exhibits assay performance and offers a universal and promising analysis strategy for detecting OPs in practical samples.

A magnetic stir bar sorbent of metal organic frameworks, carbon foam decorated zinc oxide and cryogel to enrich and extract parabens and bisphenols from food samples

A porous composite magnetic stir bar adsorbent was fabricated for the extraction and enrichment of parabens and bisphenols from selected beverage samples. The adsorbent comprised a metal organic framework, carbon foam decorated zinc oxide and magnetic nanoparticles embedded in polyvinyl alcohol cryogel. The porous composite stir bar adsorbent could adsorb parabens and bisphenols via hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interactions. In the best conditions, linearity was good from 5.0 to 200.0 µg/L for methyl paraben, ethyl paraben and bisphenol A and from 10.0 to 200.0 µg/L for bisphenol B and butyl paraben. Limits of detection ranged from 1.5 to 3.0 µg/L. The developed composite stir bar was successfully applied to extract and determine parabens and bisphenols in fruit juice, beer and milk. Recoveries ranged from 89.5 to 99.5 % with RSDs lower than 6 %. The developed sorbent and new methodology were evaluated in terms of its green character with satisfactory results.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-assisted materials for the detection and remediation of hazardous gases and VOCs

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based materials are attracting attention for their unique properties, such as low-cost, chemical stability, facile synthesis, adjustable electronic structure, and optical properties. These facilitate the use of g-C3N4 to design better photocatalytic and sensing materials. Environmental pollution by hazardous gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be monitored and controlled using eco-friendly g-C3N4- photocatalysts. Firstly, this review introduces the structure, optical and electronic properties of C3N4 and C3N4 assisted materials, followed by various synthesis strategies. In continuation, binary and ternary nanocomposites of C3N4 with metal oxides, sulfides, noble metals, and graphene are elaborated. g-C3N4/metal oxide composites exhibited better charge separation that leads to enhancement in photocatalytic properties. g-C3N4/noble metal composites possess higher photocatalytic activities due to the surface plasmon effects of metals. Ternary composites by the presence of dual heterojunctions improve properties of g-C3N4 for enhanced photocatalytic application. In the later part, we have summarised the application of g-C3N4 and its assisted materials for sensing toxic gases and VOCs and decontaminating NOx and VOCs by photocatalysis. Composites of g-C3N4 with metal and metal oxide give comparatively better results. This review is expected to bring a new sketch for developing g-C3N4-based photocatalysts and sensors with practical applications.

Simultaneous Analysis of 53 Pesticides in Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) by Using LC-MS/MS Coupled with a Modified QuEChERS Technique

OBJECTIVE

An optimized quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) technique was investigated and compared with the conventional QuEChERS technique for the simultaneous analysis of fifty-three pesticide residues in safflower using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS).

METHOD

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) consisting of a major amount of carbon and nitrogen with a large surface area was used as a QuEChERS adsorbent instead of graphitized carbon black (GCB) for safflower extraction purification. Validation experiments were performed using spiked pesticide samples, and real samples were analyzed.

RESULTS

The linearity of the modified QuEChERS technique was evaluated with high coefficients of determination (R-2) being higher than 0.99. The limits of detection were <10 μg/kg. The spiked recoveries ranged from 70.4% to 97.6% with a relative standard deviation of less than 10.0%. The fifty-three pesticides exhibited negligible matrix effects (<20%). Thiamethoxam, acetamiprid, metolachlor, and difenoconazole were detected in real samples using an established method.

CONCLUSION

This work provides a new g-C₃N₄-based modified QuEChERS technique for multi-pesticide residue analysis in complex food matrices.

Cellulose Nanocrystals Induced Loose and Porous Graphite Phase Carbon Nitride/Porous Carbon Composites for Capturing and Determining of Organochlorine Pesticides from Water and Fruit Juice by Solid-Phase Microextraction

Herein, novel, loose, and porous graphite phase carbon nitride/porous carbon (g-C₃N₄@PC) composites were prepared by decorating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The characterization results demonstrate that the as-prepared composites presented high specific surface areas, porous structures, and abundant chemical groups, with the modification of CNCs. In view of the unique advantages, g-C₃N₄@PC was used as the coating material for the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water and juice samples. The g-C₃N₄@PC-coated fibers showed better extraction efficiencies than commercial fibers (100/7 μm PDMS and PA) toward the OCPs, with the enrichment factors of the g-C₃N₄@PC-coated fibers 5-30 times higher than the latter. Using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument, the g-C₃N₄@PC-coated fibers exhibited a gratifying analytical performance for determining low concentrations of OCPs, with a wide linear range (0.1-1600 ng L^-1 for water; 0.1-1000 ng L^-1 for juice), low limits of detection (0.0141-0.0942 ng L^-1 for water; 0.0245-0.0777 ng L^-1 for juice), and good reproducibility and repeatability in optimal conditions. The established method showed good sensitivity and recovery in the determination of OCPs in the water and fruit juice samples, which displayed broad prospects for analyzing organic pollutants from environmental samples.

Morphology Genetic Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Biocomposites for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-125 and UiO-66, were modified on the butterfly wings (BWs) by chemical bonds, and CdS was grown in situ on them through a solvothermal approach. The BWs enable the biocomposites to possess a wider (>600 nm) and stronger light absorption. The in situ growth method can produce highly active and stable biocomposites. These novel morphologic MOF/CdS biocomposites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and so on. The resulting composites were tested for photocatalytic hydrogen production through water splitting with platinum and lactic acid as the co-catalyst and sacrificial agent, respectively. The two samples showed higher activity than bulk CdS, MOFs, or their composites. Therefore, this paper provides an appropriate method to obtain the MOF/CdS biocomposites, and the resulting biocomposites are proved to be efficient catalyst systems for hydrogen evolution from water under visible light with a wider wavelength.

Design of metalloenzyme mimics based on self-assembled peptides for organophosphorus pesticides detection

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) detection has attracted considerable attention because of the extensive application of OPs. In this research, non-toxic and high-performance metalloenzyme mimics of Zn²⁺-bonding peptides were developed by obtaining inspiration from phosphotriesterase (PTE) and nanofiber formation. Furthermore, based on the electrochemical activity of p-nitrophenol (PNP), the electrochemical sensor of metalloenzyme mimics was developed. By examining the effect of the active sites of peptides and fibril formation on the degradation of OPs, the optimal metalloenzyme mimic was selected. Furthermore, optimal metalloenzyme mimics were combined with NiCo₂O₄ to develop an electrochemical sensor of OPs. By monitoring square wave voltammetry (SWV) signals of PNP degraded from OPs, the amounts of OPs in actual samples could be determined in 15 min. We discovered that both the active sites of α metal and β metal were required for metalloenzyme mimics; Zn²⁺ promoted peptide fibrosis and especially acted as a cofactor for degrading OPs. Compared to traditional methods, the electrochemical sensor of metalloenzyme mimics was sensitive, reliable, and non-toxic; furthermore, the detection limit of methyl paraoxon was as low as 0.08 µM. The metalloenzyme mimics will be a promising material for detecting OPs in the food industry and environment fields.

A Comprehensive Review of Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)-Metal Oxide-Based Nanocomposites: Potential for Photocatalysis and Sensing

g-C3N4 has drawn lots of attention due to its photocatalytic activity, low-cost and facile synthesis, and interesting layered structure. However, to improve some of the properties of g-C3N4, such as photochemical stability, electrical band structure, and to decrease charge recombination rate, and towards effective light-harvesting, g-C3N4-metal oxide-based heterojunctions have been introduced. In this review, we initially discussed the preparation, modification, and physical properties of the g-C3N4 and then, we discussed the combination of g-C3N4 with various metal oxides such as TiO2, ZnO, FeO, Fe2O3, Fe3O4, WO3, SnO, SnO2, etc. We summarized some of their characteristic properties of these heterojunctions, their optical features, photocatalytic performance, and electrical band edge positions. This review covers recent advances, including applications in water splitting, CO2 reduction, and photodegradation of organic pollutants, sensors, bacterial disinfection, and supercapacitors. We show that metal oxides can improve the efficiency of the bare g-C3N4 to make the composites suitable for a wide range of applications. Finally, this review provides some perspectives, limitations, and challenges in investigation of g-C3N4-metal-oxide-based heterojunctions.

Fabrication of an SPME fiber based on ZnO@GA nanorods coated onto fused silica as a highly efficient absorbent for the analysis of cancer VOCs in water and urine

Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) secreted in urine, blood, breath, etc. is a new method for monitoring the metabolism and biochemistry of the human body. However, due to the complexity of samples, a pre-concentration step is necessary before the final analysis with gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Therefore, miniaturized extraction methods such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) can be a promising and simple pre-concentration technique. Different strategies have been adopted for the fabrication or modification of SPME fibers. This study presents the preparation and characterization of glass optical fibers coated with ZnO nanorods functionalized with gallic acid (ZnO@GA nanorod) as SPME adsorbent in GC-MS. ZnO@GA nanorods were synthesized separately and then coated onto the fibers. The coated fibers were characterized by using field emission scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (FESEM/EDAX) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Possessing a high surface to volume ratio of ZnO nanorods and functional groups of GA, the ZnO@GA nanorod-based SPME fibers exhibited good extraction performance for VOCs comparing with the commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coated fibers. Under optimal conditions (NaCl concentration, 30% w/v; extraction time of 25 min; pH, 5-7 and stirring rate of 400 rpm) ZnO@GA nanorods coated fibers achieved low detection limits (0.32-4.8 μg/L), low quantification limits (1.8-16.3 μg/L) and good linearity (5-1000 μg/L) for selected VOCs. The repeatability (n = 3) for a single fiber was within the range of 4.1-7.9% (intra-day) and 5.7-9.6% (inter-day) while the reproducibility (n = 3) of fiber-to-fiber were in the range of 4.7% and 9.9%. This method was successfully used for the determination of six VOCs in water and urine with satisfactory recoveries of 90-112%. ZnO@GA nanorod coated fibers, despite possessing a much thinner coating compared to the commercial fibers, revealed a better overall extraction efficiency towards VOCs. These results indicated that the ZnO@GA provided a promising alternative in sample pretreatment and analysis in GC-MS.

[Research progress in application of metal-organic framework-derived materials to sample pretreatment]

Sample pretreatment technology plays a vital role throughout the analysis of complex samples. Sample pretreatment can not only increase the concentration of trace targets in the sample, but also effectively eliminate interference from the sample matrix in instrumental analysis. Adsorbent materials are a key component of sample pretreatment technology. Therefore, the development of efficient and stable new adsorbent materials has acquired significance in research on pretreatment technology. Porous materials are advantageous for use in diverse applications, such as in adsorbents, when they possess controllable nanostructures, a tailored pore surface chemistry, and abundant porosity, and are inexpensive. Particularly in recent years, porous materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) feature excellent properties, such as diverse morphology and structure, adjustable pore size, high specific surface area, good thermal stability, and chemical resistance. MOF-derived materials, when used as adsorbents for sample pretreatment, offer the following advantages: (1) The porous materials derived from MOFs typically possess a larger specific surface area than other porous materials. This characteristic is beneficial to improve the extraction capacity and extraction efficiency via an increase in the contact area between the materials and targets; (2) The microscopic porous structure of MOF-derived materials can be easily tuned (by controlling the temperature and time during pyrolysis, gas atmosphere, and heating rate), which is conducive to improve the selectivity of sample pretreatment methods; (3) The metal active sites can be evenly distributed. Owing to the ordered distribution of metal ions in the precursor MOFs and a good periodic framework structure, the metal active sites of the derivatives formed can still maintain a corresponding distance. These metal active sites will not form agglomerates and affect the extraction performance; conversely, other porous materials often require extremely complicated processes to achieve a uniform distribution; (4) Heteroatoms such as nitrogen and sulfur can be easily doped on the framework of MOF-derived porous materials. This doping enables the materials to induce additional interactions such as hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking for adsorbing target analytes. The excellent properties of MOF-derived materials make them promising for use in sample pretreatment. Novel sample pretreatment methods that use MOF-derived materials are constantly being developed. However, the use of MOF-derived materials is limited by the complex preparation process and high production cost of MOF precursors, along with difficulties in mass production. Further, the precise design or functionalization of MOF-derived materials according to the characteristics of targets is a new direction with immense challenges as well as application potential. This review summarizes the application of MOF-derived materials in sample pretreatment methods, including dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE), magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE), solid phase microextraction (SPME), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), and dispersive micro solid phase extraction (DMSPE). The preparation methods, functional control, and enrichment efficiencies of various MOF-derived materials are also reviewed. Finally, the application prospects of MOF-derived materials in sample pretreatment are discussed to provide a clear outlook and reference for further related research.

Graphite Carbon Nitride and Its Composites for Medicine and Health Applications

With the progress of science and technology and the improvement of people's living standards, the performance of traditional materials can no longer fully meet the needs of social development. Graphitic phase carbon nitride (g-C₃ N₄ ), as a new type of nanomaterial, has good properties. Its unique graphite like structure and stable thermodynamic characteristics have led an increasing number of researchers to explore its diverse functions and use this as a basis to develop related energy and products for applications in various fields. Among them, applications in the field of medicine health have become popular in recent years. Therefore, this review summarizes the synthesis methods of g-C₃ N₄ and its composites, as well as their applications in food, medicine, environmental monitoring and disease treatment, in the hope of providing references and basis for further expanding the applications of g-C₃ N₄ in large health areas.

A dual-signal sensor for the analysis of parathion-methyl using silver nanoparticles modified with graphitic carbon nitride

A highly sensitive and selective method was developed for both UV-vis spectrophotometric and fluorimetric determination of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). This method used silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) modified with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The AgNPs reduced the fluorescence intensity of g-C3N4. Acetylthiocholine (ATCh) could be catalytically hydrolyzed by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) to form thiocholine, which induces aggregation of the AgNPs. This aggregation led to the recovery of the blue fluorescence of g-C3N4, with excitation/emission peaks at 310/460 nm. This fluorescence intensity could be reduced again in the presence of OPs because of the inhibitory effect of OPs on the activity of AChE. The degree of reduction was found to be proportional to the concentration of OPs, and the limit of fluorometric detection was 0.0324 μg/L (S/N = 3). In addition, the absorption of the g-C3N4/AgNPs at 390 nm decreased because of the aggregation of the AgNPs, but was recovered in presence of OPs because of the inhibition of enzyme activity by OPs. This method was successfully applied to the analysis of parathion-methyl in real samples.

Oxygenated carbon nanotubes cages coated solid-phase microextraction fiber for selective extraction of migrated aromatic amines from food contact materials

In this study, an oxygenated carbon nanotubes cages (OCNTCs) material was prepared by calcinating zeolitic imidazole framework-67 (ZIF-67) and then oxidizing the resulting material. The OCNTCs was used as a high efficient solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating to extract aromatic amines (AAs). The obtained fiber exhibited high selectivity for AAs over other organic compounds in food contact materials (FCMs) due to matched pore size and abundant oxygen-containing groups. Subsequently, coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), a sensitive method with low limits of detection (0.1-2.0 ng L^-1), wide linear ranges (0.5-500 ng L ^-1) and good precision (RSDs ≤ 8.6%) was developed for analysis of AAs. The specific migrated AAs from food simulants that prepared by standardized migration and thermal migration test were successfully analysed by this developed method with satisfactory recoveries (81.6% - 118.1%) and precision (RSDs, 2.1-9.5%). The results demonstrated that the prepared OCNTCs-coated fibers displayed excellent extraction performance, suggesting a promising application to investigate the migration behaviors of AAs.

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Six Heterocyclic Pesticides in Environmental Water Samples Followed by HPLC-DAD Determination

Magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes were prepared as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for the enrichment of six heterocyclic pesticides in environmental water samples, including imidacloprid, triadimefon, fipronil, flusilazole, chlorfenapyr and fenpyroximate. Then six heterocyclic pesticides were separated and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode-array detector (HPLC-DAD). Major factors influencing MSPE efficiency, including the dose of mag-multi-walled carbon nanotubes (mag-MWCNTs), extraction time, solution pH, salt concentration, type and volume of eluent and desorption time were investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the enrichment factor of the method reached to 250. The linearity was achieved within 0.05–10.0 μg/L for imidacloprid and chlorfenapyr, 0.10–10.0 μg/L for fipronil, flusilazole, triadimefon and fenpyroximate. Limits of detection were in the range of 0.01–0.03 μg/L. Good precision at three spiked levels were 1.1–11.2% (intra-day) and 1.7–11.0% (inter-day) with relative standard deviation of peak area, respectively. The developed method was utilized to analyze tap water, river water and reservoir water samples and recoveries at three spiked concentration levels ranged from 72.2% to 107.5%. The method was proved to be a convenient, rapid and practical method for sensitive determination of heterocyclic pesticides.

DLLME-SFO-GC-MS procedure for the determination of 10 organochlorine pesticides in water and remediation using magnetite nanoparticles

There exists a high demand for fast, simple, and reliable methodologies for determining the presence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) on environmental samples. Moreover, the toxicity and accumulation of potential OCPs in several environments have led to the development of technologies that achieve their removal from contaminated waters. In this study, a novel method combining a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure based on the solidification of floating organic drop is developed and validated for the extraction, preconcentration, and determination of 10 OCPs: α-BHC, p,p'-DDE, δ-BHC, dieldrin, p,p'-DDT, endosulfan I, endosulfan sulfate, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide (isomer B), and methoxychlor in water samples. The results show that the calibration curves were linear for all the studied compounds, and the coefficients of correlation higher than 0.99. The variation coefficient for precision and accuracy was lower than 10%, and the accuracy ranged from 93 to 105%. Low limit of detection and limit of quantification values ranging from 0.06-3.00 ng mL^-1 and 0.20-10 ng mL^-1 were obtained, respectively. The capability of the proposed method was confirmed using an analysis of the water samples before and after the degradation process; this was achieved by employing nanomaterials, while performing an analysis of 160 real samples that were sourced from a Brazilian river. A cobalt-doped magnetite was applied for the environmental remediation of the studied compounds, and it was verified that the novel material has the potential to be used in environmental remediation with a degradation efficiency exceeding 80% for the majority of the studied compounds.

Triple-dimensional spectroscopy combined with chemometrics for the discrimination of pesticide residues based on ionic liquid-stabilized Mn-ZnS quantum dots and covalent organic frameworks

Manganese-doped zinc sulfide quantum dots (Mn-ZnS QDs) are promising candidates for multi-channel sensing analysis due to their multi-dimensional optical properties. In this study, we integrated amino-silane and ionic liquid co-modified Mn-ZnS QDs and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) into optosensing nanoparticles to provide triple-dimensional optical response signals and combined them with chemometrics for the analysis of multiple pesticide residues. Through the exploration and optimization of a series of conditions, fluorescence, room temperature phosphorescence, and ultraviolet-visible combined with chemometrics were used for the discrimination and recognition of multiple pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables. The ionic liquid of 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate was used to modify Mn-ZnS QDs to improve the optical response and enrichment of pesticide adsorption sites, which were also synergistically enhanced by the COF support. This is a potential method to discriminate pesticides efficiently and enables fast and reliable analysis of pesticides in the agricultural and food industries.

Three-dimensional pompon-like Au/ZnO porous microspheres as solid phase microextraction coating for determination of volatile fatty acids from foot odor

In this study, facile fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) pompon-like gold/zinc oxide (Au/ZnO) porous microspheres by hydrothermal procedure was investigated. These microspheres were utilized as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating for determination of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from foot odor coupling with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). SEM and TEM characterizations showed that as-prepared material was composed of 1D porous nanowires and presented a uniform coating on stainless-steel wire. The extraction of VFAs including propanoic acid, butyric acid, isobutanoic acid, isovaleric acid, hexanoic acid, and heptylic acid was carried out by headspace model after sampling from human foot using cotton wool strips. Following optimization of extraction parameters including extraction temperature and time and desorption temperature and time, the as-prepared SPME coating presented better extraction efficiency than commercial DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber towards all the VFAs due to its excellent properties. Under the optimized conditions, the method exhibited good linearity (0.5-200 ng) with regression coefficients (R²) ranging from 0.9836 to 0.9981 for all the analytes. The limits of detection ranged from 0.017 to 0.098 ng. Single fiber repeatability varied from 6.5% to 11.2% and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility ranged from 8.6% to 12.3%. The proposed method was successfully applied for extraction and determination of VFAs from foot odor after sampling using cotton wool strips.

Recent Applications and Newly Developed Strategies of Solid-Phase Microextraction in Contaminant Analysis: Through the Environment to Humans

The present review aims to describe the recent and most impactful applications in pollutant analysis using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology in environmental, food, and bio-clinical analysis. The covered papers were published in the last 5 years (2014–2019) thus providing the reader with information about the current state-of-the-art and the future potential directions of the research in pollutant monitoring using SPME. To this end, we revised the studies focused on the investigation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pesticides, and emerging pollutants (EPs) including personal care products (PPCPs), in different environmental, food, and bio-clinical matrices. We especially emphasized the role that SPME is having in contaminant surveys following the path that goes from the environment to humans passing through the food web. Besides, this review covers the last technological developments encompassing the use of novel extraction coatings (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, PDMS-overcoated fiber), geometries (e.g., Arrow-SPME, multiple monolithic fiber-SPME), approaches (e.g., vacuum and cold fiber SPME), and on-site devices. The applications of SPME hyphenated with ambient mass spectrometry have also been described.

A Comprehensive Insight on the Health Benefits and Phytoconstituents of Camellia sinensis and Recent Approaches for Its Quality Control

Tea, Camellia sinensis, which belongs to the family Theaceae, is a shrub or evergreen tree up to 16 m in height. Green tea is very popular because of its marked health benefits comprising its anticancer, anti-oxidant, and antimicrobial activities, as well as its effectiveness in reducing body weight. Additionally, it was recognized by Chinese people as an effective traditional drink required for the prophylaxis against many health ailments. This is due to the complex chemical composition of green tea, which comprises different classes of chemical compounds, such as polyphenols, alkaloids, proteins, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and others. The beneficial health effects of green tea ultimately led to its great consumption and increase its liability to be adulterated by either low-quality or non-green tea products with concomitant decrease in activity. Thus, in this review, green tea was selected to highlight its health benefits and phytoconstituents, as well as recent approaches for its quality-control monitoring that guarantee its incorporation in many pharmaceutical industries. More research is needed to find out other more biological activities, active constituents, and other simple and cheap techniques for its quality assurance that ascertain the prevention of its adulteration.

Magnetic nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide as a novel magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the separation of bisphenol endocrine disruptors in carbonated beverages

A novel magnetic nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄@N-RGO) had been fabricated for the first time on the basis of a simple solvothermal method and then was successfully applied to extract four bisphenol endocrine disruptors (bisphenol A, bisphenol B, bisphenol F and bisphenol AP) in carbonated beverages coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The as-prepared Fe₃O₄@N-RGO was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunner-Emmet-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The introduction of nitrogen atoms not only made the wrinkle level of N-RGO increased, but also retarded the irreversible aggregation of graphene sheets. Compared with Fe₃O₄@RGO, Fe₃O₄@N-RGO owned larger specific surface area and more adsorption sites. Hence, Fe₃O₄@N-RGO showed excellent extraction efficiency toward bisphenol endocrine disruptors. The analytical parameters influencing the extraction efficiency were optimized in detail. Under the optimal conditions, a satisfactory performance was obtained. The calibration lines were linear over the concentration in the range of 0.4-1000 μg L^-1 with determination coefficients (r²) between 0.9976 and 0.9996. The limits of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.1 μg L^-1 to 0.2 μg L^-1. The recoveries varied from 86.52% to 101.47% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 8.59%. Overall, the proposed method was an efficient pretreatment and enrichment procedure and could be successfully applied for selective extraction and determination of bisphenol endocrine disruptors in complex matrices.

Analysis of pesticide residues in commercially available chenpi using a modified QuEChERS method and GC-MS/MS determination

To ensure the safety of the commercially available chenpi, a convenient and fast analytical method was developed for the determination of 133 pesticide residues in chenpi using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). In this study, different extraction solvents, redissolution solvents and adsorbents were tested according to the recovery and purification effect to obtain a modified QuEChERS method. The samples were extracted with acetonitrile. During the clean-up step, octadecyl-modified silica (C18) and graphitized carbon black (GCB) were selected, and aminopropyl (NH₂) was used instead of primary secondary amine (PSA) because of its weaker ion exchange capacity which had little effect on the recovery of ditalimfos. Samples were quantified by matrix-matched calibration with internal standards. All pesticides showed good linearity in the respective range, both with values of r² > 0.99. The average recoveries of the pesticides spiked samples ranged from 70.0% to 112.2% with the RSDs of 0.2%–14.4%. The modified QuEChERS method was validated and applied to twenty real samples. Five pesticides were found in eight batches, but no pesticide exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRL, MRL reference to European commission).

Moisture stable Ni-Zn MOF/g-C3N4 nanoflowers: A highly efficient adsorbent for solid-phase microextraction of PAHs

Volatile polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water and soil are associated with status in the human body. Development of simple, efficient detection method is challenging due to the coating could be attacked by the abundance of water in the direct-immersion solid-phase microextraction. The stability of coating is essential to the analysis results. In this paper, a stable Ni-Zn MOF/g-C₃N₄ (MG NFs) nanoflowers with cavity traps structure was firstly reported and acted as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) adsorbent for PAHs. Markedly enhanced moisture and acid stability of the MG NFs was obtained through the doping the hydrophobic graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) and metal ions into metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The aperture environment and ambient environment of MG NFs were changed by the doping of the Ni and the g-C₃N_4, respectively. The moisture and acid stability of MG NFs were prominently increased under the dual protection. Compared to commonly used commercial coatings, the MG NFs own large surface area, unique nanoflowers structure and numerous open metal sites on the nanosheets, which demonstrated significant extraction superiority for PAHs. The MG NFs coated fiber was used for the SPME preconcentration of PAHs and couped with GC-MS for detecting PAHs. It presented low detection limits (0.1-3.0 ng L^-1), wide linearity (0.3-5000.0 ng L^-1) and good linearity (the correlation coefficient >0.9951). The inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviation (RSD) (n = 3) for three replicate extractions using one fiber was 3.8%-9.1%, and 3.5%-9.2%, respectively. The fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (n = 3) was 4.2-11.8%. The coupling method was successfully applied in the analysis of real water and soil samples with satisfactory recoveries of 82.9-109.2%, 84.2-106.4%, and the corresponding RSDs were 2.4-11.3%, 3.6-10.8%, respectively. The results indicated the effectiveness of NG NFs coated fiber in further practical application.
