Synthesis and electrochemical sensing application of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-based materials: A review

Multiplexed neurochemical sensing with sub-nM sensitivity across 2.25 mm2 area

Multichannel arrays capable of real-time sensing of neuromodulators in the brain are crucial for gaining insights into new aspects of neural communication. However, measuring neurochemicals, such as dopamine, at low concentrations over large areas has proven challenging. In this research, we demonstrate a novel approach that leverages the scalability and processing power offered by microelectrode array devices integrated with a functionalized, high-density microwire bundle, enabling electrochemical sensing at an unprecedented scale and spatial resolution. The sensors demonstrate outstanding selective molecular recognition by incorporating a selective polymeric membrane. By combining cutting-edge commercial multiplexing, digitization, and data acquisition hardware with a bio-compatible and highly sensitive neurochemical interface array, we establish a powerful platform for neurochemical analysis. This multichannel array has been successfully utilized in vitro and ex vivo systems. Notably, our results show a sensing area of 2.25 mm2 with an impressive detection limit of 820 pM for dopamine. This new approach paves the way for investigating complex neurochemical processes and holds promise for advancing our understanding of brain function and neurological disorders.

Elevating Thermoelectric Performance by Compositing Dibromo-Substituted Thienoacene with SWCNTs

Composites of organic small molecules (OSMs) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have drawn great attention as flexible thermoelectric (TE) materials in recent years. Here, we synthesized thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]thieno[2,3-d]thiophene (TTA) and 2,6-dibromothieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]thieno[2,3-d]thiophene (TTA-2Br) and compounded them with SWCNTs, obtaining thermoelectric TTA/SWCNT and TTA-2Br/SWCNT composites. The introduction of the electron-withdrawing Br group was found to decrease the highest molecular orbital energy level and bandgap (Eg) of TTA-2Br. As a result, the Seebeck coefficient (S) and power factor (PF) of the OSM/SWCNT composite films were significantly improved. Moreover, suitable energy barrier between TTA-2Br and SWCNTs facilitates the energy filtering effect, which further enhances thermoelectric properties of the 40 wt % TTA-2Br/SWCNT composite film with optimum thermoelectric properties (PF = 242.59 ± 9.42 μW m-1 K-2 at room temperature), good thermal stability, and mechanical flexibility. In addition, the thermoelectric generator (TEG) prepared using 40 wt % TTA-2Br/SWCNT composite films and n-type SWCNT films can generate an output power of 102.8 ± 7.4 nW at a temperature difference of 20 °C. This work provides new insights into the preparation of OSM/SWCNT composites with significantly enhanced thermoelectric properties.

Sensitive and selective electrochemical aptasensing method for the voltammetric determination of dopamine based on AuNPs/PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites

In this study, the effects of phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and graphene oxide (GO) as supporting electrolytes and dopants on the electropolymerization process of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) were investigated. It was found that the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites obtained by a simple one-step electrochemical redox polymerization method using GO as the only supporting electrolyte and dopant possess excellent electrochemical properties. Then, the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites were used as electrode substrate to further modify with AuNPs, and an electrochemical aptasensor based on AuNPs/PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites was successfully constructed for the sensitive and selective determination of dopamine (DA). Comparison of the cyclic voltammetric response of different neurotransmitters before and after aptamer assembly showed that the aptamer significantly improved the selectivity of the sensor for DA. The low detection limit of 1.0 μM (S/N = 3) indicated the good electrochemical performance of the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposite film. Moreover, the aptasensor showed good recoveries in 50-fold diluted fetal bovine serum with RSD values all less than 5 % (n = 5), indicating that the PEDOT-ERGO nanocomposites and the electrochemical aptasensor have promising applications in other neurochemicals assay and biomedical analysis.

Ultrasensitive, Label-Free Voltammetric Detection of Dibutyl Phthalate Based on Poly-l-lysine/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-porous Graphene Nanocomposite and Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Development of an efficient technique for accurate and sensitive dibutyl phthalate (DBP) determination is crucial for food safety and environment protection. An ultrasensitive molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) voltammetric sensor was herein engineered for the specific determination of DBP using poly-l-lysine/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/porous graphene nanocomposite (PLL/PEDOT-PG) and poly(o-phenylenediamine)-imprinted film as a label-free and sensing platform. Fabrication of PEDOT-PG nanocomposites was achieved through a simple liquid-liquid interfacial polymerization. Subsequently, poly-l-lysine (PLL) functionalization was employed to enhance the dispersibility and stability of the prepared PEDOT-PG, as well as promote its adhesion on the sensor surface. In the presence of DBP, the imprinted poly(o-phenylenediamine) film was formed on the surface of PLL/PEDOT-PG. Investigation of the physical properties and electrochemical behavior of the MIP/PLL/PEDOT-PG indicates that the incorporation of PG into PEDOT, with PLL uniformly wrapping its surface, significantly enhanced conductivity, carrier mobility, stability, and provided a larger surface area for specific recognition sites. Under optimal experimental conditions, the electrochemical response exhibited a linear relationship with a logarithm of DBP concentration within the range of 1 fM to 5 µM, with the detection limit as low as 0.88 fM. The method demonstrated exceptional stability and repeatability and has been successfully applied to quantify DBP in plastic packaging materials.

A PEDOT enhanced covalent organic framework (COF) fluorescent probe for in vivo detection and imaging of Fe3

Simple and accurate in vivo monitoring of Fe3+ is essential for gaining a better understanding of its role in physiological and pathological processes. A novel fluorescent probe was synthesized via in situ solid-state polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) in the pore channels of a covalent organic framework (COF). The PEDOT@COF fluorescent probe exhibited an absolute quantum yield (QY) 3 times higher than COF. In the presence of Fe3+ the PEDOT@COF 475 nm fluorescence emission, 365 nm excitation, is quenched within 180 s. Fluorescence quenching is linear with Fe3+ in the concentration range of 0-960 μM, with a detection limit of 0.82 μM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was attributed to inner filter effect (IEF), photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and static quenching (SQE) between PEDOT@COF and Fe3+. A paper strip-based detector was designed to facilitate practical applicability, and the PEDOT@COF probe successfully applied to fluorescence imaging of Fe3+ levels in vivo. This work details a tool of great promise for enabling detailed investigations into the role of Fe3+ in physiological and pathological diseases.

The Effect of Polymerization Techniques on the Creation of Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Sensors and Their Application on Pharmaceutical Compounds

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have become more prevalent in fabricating sensor applications, particularly in medicine, pharmaceuticals, food quality monitoring, and the environment. The ease of their preparation, adaptability of templates, superior affinity and specificity, improved stability, and the possibility for downsizing are only a few benefits of these sensors. Moreover, from a medical perspective, monitoring therapeutic medications and determining pharmaceutical compounds in their pharmaceutical forms and biological systems is very important. Additionally, because medications are hazardous to the environment, effective, quick, and affordable determination in the surrounding environment is of major importance. Concerning a variety of performance criteria, including sensitivity, specificity, low detection limits, and affordability, MIP sensors outperform other published technologies for analyzing pharmaceutical drugs. MIP sensors have, therefore, been widely used as one of the most crucial techniques for analyzing pharmaceuticals. The first part of this review provides a detailed explanation of the many polymerization techniques that were employed to create high-performing MIP sensors. In the subsequent section of the review, the utilization of MIP-based sensors for quantifying the drugs in their pharmaceutical preparation, biological specimens, and environmental samples are covered in depth. Finally, a critical evaluation of the potential future research paths for MIP-based sensors clarifies the use of MIP in pharmaceutical fields.

Electrochemical detection of redox molecules secreted by Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Part 2: Enhanced detection owing to PEDOT:PSS electrode structuration

Fast bacterial detection and identification is a crucial challenge in order to improve our antibiotics use and reduce the antimicrobial resistance. Electroanalysis of biological fluids is cheap and can be done in situ but the electrode material needs to be perfectly chosen. We previously studied electrochemical signature of Pseudomonas aeruginosa's secretome, thanks to glassy carbon electrode. Some conductive polymers are particularly efficient for biological use because of their antifouling properties, biocompatibility and way of processing. In this paper, we described the fabrication, characterization and utilisation of PEDOT:PSS film to detect and identify Pseudomonas aeruginosa through three of its secreted molecules: pyocyanin, Pseudomonas quinolone PQS and 2'-aminoacetophenone. The electrochemical responses, clearly amplified by PEDOT:PSS, can be used to identify these bacteria quickly and efficiently.

PEDOT-Polyamine-Based Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Monitoring Protein Binding

The fabrication of efficient organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs)-based biosensors requires the design of biocompatible interfaces for the immobilization of biorecognition elements, as well as the development of robust channel materials to enable the transduction of the biochemical event into a reliable electrical signal. In this work, PEDOT-polyamine blends are shown as versatile organic films that can act as both highly conducting channels of the transistors and non-denaturing platforms for the construction of the biomolecular architectures that operate as sensing surfaces. To achieve this goal, we synthesized and characterized films of PEDOT and polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and employed them as conducting channels in the construction of OECTs. Next, we studied the response of the obtained devices to protein adsorption, using glucose oxidase (GOx) as a model system, through two different strategies: The direct electrostatic adsorption of GOx on the PEDOT-PAH film and the specific recognition of the protein by a lectin attached to the surface. Firstly, we used surface plasmon resonance to monitor the adsorption of the proteins and the stability of the assemblies on PEDOT-PAH films. Then, we monitored the same processes with the OECT showing the capability of the device to perform the detection of the protein binding process in real time. In addition, the sensing mechanisms enabling the monitoring of the adsorption process with the OECTs for the two strategies are discussed.

"Clickable" Organic Electrochemical Transistors

Interfacing the surface of an organic semiconductor with biological elements is a central quest when it comes to the development of efficient organic bioelectronic devices. Here, we present the first example of "clickable" organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The synthesis and characterization of an azide-derivatized EDOT monomer (azidomethyl-EDOT, EDOT-N₃) are reported, as well as its deposition on Au-interdigitated electrodes through electropolymerization to yield PEDOT-N₃-OECTs. The electropolymerization protocol allows for a straightforward and reliable tuning of the characteristics of the OECTs, yielding transistors with lower threshold voltages than PEDOT-based state-of-the-art devices and maximum transconductance voltage values close to 0 V, a key feature for the development of efficient organic bioelectronic devices. Subsequently, the azide moieties are employed to click alkyne-bearing molecules such as redox probes and biorecognition elements. The clicking of an alkyne-modified PEG₄-biotin allows for the use of the avidin-biotin interactions to efficiently generate bioconstructs with proteins and enzymes. In addition, a dibenzocyclooctyne-modified thrombin-specific HD22 aptamer is clicked on the PEDOT-N₃-OECTs, showing the application of the devices toward the development of organic transistors-based biosensors. Finally, the clicked OECTs preserve their electronic features after the different clicking procedures, demonstrating the stability and robustness of the fabricated transistors.

Recent advances on rapid detection and remediation of environmental pollutants utilizing nanomaterials-based (bio)sensors

Environmental safety has become a significant issue for the safety of living species, humans, and the ecosystem as a consequence of the harmful and detrimental consequences of various pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, dyes, etc., emitted into the surroundings. To resolve this issue, various efforts, legal acts, scientific and technological perspectives have been embraced, but still remain a global concern. Furthermore, due to non-portability, complex detection, and inappropriate on-site recognition of sophisticated laboratory tools, the real-time analysis of these environmental contaminants has been limited. As a result of innovative nano bioconjugation and nanofabrication techniques, nanotechnology enables enhanced nanomaterials (NMs) based (bio)sensors demonstrating ultra-sensitivity and a short detection time in real-time analysis, as well as superior sensitivity, reliability, and selectivity have been developed. Several researchers have demonstrated the potent detection of pollutants such as Hg²⁺ ion by the usage of AgNP-MD in electronic and optoelectronic methods with a detection limit of 5-45 μM which is quite significant. Taking into consideration of such tremendous research, herein, the authors have highlighted 21st-century strategies towards NMs based biosensor technology for pollutants detection, including nano biosensors, enzyme-based biosensors, electrochemical-based biosensors, carbon-based biosensors and optical biosensors for on-site identification and detection of target analytes. This article will provide a brief overview of the significance of utilizing NMs-based biosensors for the detection of a diverse array of hazardous pollutants, and a thorough understanding of the detection processes of NMs-based biosensors, as well as the limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values, rendering researchers to focus on the world's need for a sustainable earth.

Recent Advancements in Electrochemical Biosensors for Monitoring the Water Quality

The release of chemicals and microorganisms from various sources, such as industry, agriculture, animal farming, wastewater treatment plants, and flooding, into water systems have caused water pollution in several parts of our world, endangering aquatic ecosystems and individual health. World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced strict standards for the maximum concentration limits for nutrients and chemicals in drinking water, surface water, and groundwater. It is crucial to have rapid, sensitive, and reliable analytical detection systems to monitor the pollution level regularly and meet the standard limit. Electrochemical biosensors are advantageous analytical devices or tools that convert a bio-signal by biorecognition elements into a significant electrical response. Thanks to the micro/nano fabrication techniques, electrochemical biosensors for sensitive, continuous, and real-time detection have attracted increasing attention among researchers and users worldwide. These devices take advantage of easy operation, portability, and rapid response. They can also be miniaturized, have a long-life span and a quick response time, and possess high sensitivity and selectivity and can be considered as portable biosensing assays. They are of special importance due to their great advantages such as affordability, simplicity, portability, and ability to detect at on-site. This review paper is concerned with the basic concepts of electrochemical biosensors and their applications in various water quality monitoring, such as inorganic chemicals, nutrients, microorganisms' pollution, and organic pollutants, especially for developing real-time/online detection systems. The basic concepts of electrochemical biosensors, different surface modification techniques, bio-recognition elements (BRE), detection methods, and specific real-time water quality monitoring applications are reviewed thoroughly in this article.

Determination of luteolin in Chrysanthemum tea with a ultra-sensitive electrochemical sensor based on MoO3/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)/gama-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework composites

Chrysanthemum tea is a tranditional Chinese health drink, which contains luteolin, a flavonoid with vesatile health benefit activities. Herein, A sensitive electrochemical sensor based on composite materials consisting of MoO₃ nanorods, poly (3, 4-ethylene dioxyethiophene)(PEDOT), and γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework(CD-MOF) was prepared.The materials were characterized and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Due to the synergisticeffects of the materials, the sensor showed a wide linear range of 0.4 nM -1800 nM and a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.1 nM (S/N = 3) for luteolin under optimized conditions. Besides, the influences of some coexistent phenolic compounds and common metal ions on luteolin detection were evaluated and no significant interference was observed. Finally, the sensor was successfully applied to the detection of luteolin in real Chrysanthemum tea samples.

Voltammetric Determination of Hg2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ Ions Using a PEDOT/NTA-Modified Electrode

A novel electrochemical sensor for determining trace levels of Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions in water using square wave voltammetry (SWV) is reported. The sensor is based on a platinum electrode (Pt) modified by poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and N _α,N _α-bis-(carboxymethyl)-l-lysine hydrate (NTA lysine) PEDOT/NTA. The modified electrode surface (PEDOT/NTA) was prepared via the introduction of the lysine-NTA group to a PEDOT/N-hydroxyphthalimide NHP electrode. The (PEDOT/NTA) was characterized via cyclic voltammetry (CV), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of scan rates on the electrochemical properties of the polymer electrode were also investigated. The electrochemical results were used to estimate the coverage of the electrode polymer surface and its electrostability in background electrolyte solutions. Several analytical parameters, such as polymer film thickness, metal deposition time, and pH of the electrolyte, were examined. Linear responses to Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions in the concentration range of 5-100 μg L^-1 were obtained. The limits of detection (LODs) for the determination of Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions were 1.73, 2.33, and 1.99 μg L^-1, respectively. These promising results revealed that modified PEDOT/NTA films might well represent an important addition to existing electrochemical sensor technologies.

Pre-Anodized Graphite Pencil Electrode Coated with a Poly(Thionine) Film for Simultaneous Sensing of 3-Nitrophenol and 4-Nitrophenol in Environmental Water Samples

A very simple, as well as sensitive and selective, sensing protocol was developed on a pre-anodized graphite pencil electrode surface coated using poly(thionine) (APGE/PTH). The poly(thionine) coated graphite pencil was then used for simultaneous sensing of 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The poly(thionine) coated electrode exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytic property towards nitrophenol (3-NP and 4-NP) reduction. Redox peak potential and current of both nitrophenols were found well resolved and their simultaneous analysis was studied. Under optimized experimental conditions, APGE/PTH showed a long linear concentration range from 20 to 230 nM and 15 nM to 280 nM with a calculated limit of detection (LOD) of 4.5 and 4 nM and a sensitivity of 22.45 µA/nM and 27.12 µA/nM for 3-NP and 4-NP, respectively. Real sample analysis using the prepared sensor was tested with different environmental water samples and the sensors exhibited excellent recovery results in the range from 98.16 to 103.43%. Finally, the sensor exposed an promising selectivity, stability, and reproducibility towards sensing of 3-NP and 4-NP.

Recent advances in the aqueous applications of PEDOT

Water is ubiquitous in life - from making up the majority of the Earth's surface (by area) to over half of the human body (by weight). It stands to reason that materials are likely to contact water at some point during their lifetime. In the specific case of sensors however, there is a need to consider materials that display stable function while immersed in aqueous applications. This mini-review will discuss the most recent advances (2018 to 2021) in the application of the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) in aqueous environments. At its heart, the use of PEDOT in aqueous applications relies on nanoscale understanding and/or nanoengineered structures and properties. This enables their use in water-based settings such as within the human body or buried in agricultural soils.

PEDOT-AuNPs-based impedimetric immunosensor for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies

Electrochemical sensors and biosensors are useful techniques for fast, inexpensive, sensitive, and easy detection of innumerous specimen. In face of COVID-19 pandemic, it became evident the necessity of a rapid and accurate diagnostic test, so the impedimetric immunosensor approach can be a good alternative to replace the conventional tests due to the specific antibody-antigen binding interaction and the fast response in comparison to traditional methods. In this work, a modified electrode with electrosynthesized PEDOT and gold nanoparticles followed by the immobilization of truncated nucleoprotein (N aa160-406aa) was used for a fast and reliable detection of antibodies against COVID-19 in human serum sample. The method consists in analyzing the charge-transfer resistance (R_CT) variation before and after the modified electrode comes into contact with the positive and negative serum sample for COVID-19, using [Fe(CN)₆]^3-/4- as a probe. The results show a linear and selective response for serum samples diluted in a range of 2.5 × 10³ to 20 × 10³. Also, the electrode material was fully characterized by Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with EDS, indicating that the gold nanoparticles were well distributed around the polymer matrix and the presence of the biological sample was confirmed by EDS analysis. EIS measurements allowed to differentiate the negative and positive samples by the difference in the R_CT magnitude, proving that the material developed here has potential properties to be applied in impedimetric immunosensors for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in about 30 min.

Overoxidized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-gold nanoparticles-graphene-modified electrode for the simultaneous detection of dopamine and uric acid in the presence of ascorbic acid

An innovative, ternary nanocomposite composed of overoxidized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (OPEDOT), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO) was prepared on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) (OPEDOT–AuNPs–ERGO/GCE) through homogeneous chemical reactions and heterogeneous electrochemical methods. The morphology, composition, and structure of this nanocomposite were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of the OPEDOT–AuNPs–ERGO/GCE were investigated by cyclic voltammetry using potassium ferricyanide and hexaammineruthenium(III) chloride redox probe systems. This modified electrode shows excellent electro-catalytic activity for dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) under physiological pH conditions, but inhibits the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA). Linear voltammetric responses were obtained when DA concentrations of approximately 4.0–100 μM and UA concentrations of approximately 20–100 μM were used. The detection limits (S/N=3) for DA and UA were 1.0 and 5.0 μM, respectively, under physiological conditions and in the presence of 1.0 mM of AA. This developed method was applied to the simultaneous detection of DA and UA in human urine, where satisfactory recoveries from 96.7% to 105.0% were observed. This work demonstrates that the developed OPEDOT–AuNPs–ERGO ternary nanocomposite, with its excellent ion-selectivity and electro-catalytic activity, is a promising candidate for the simultaneous detection of DA and UA in the presence of AA in physiological and pathological studies.

Conducting Polymer-Reinforced Laser-Irradiated Graphene as a Heterostructured 3D Transducer for Flexible Skin Patch Biosensors

Flexible skin patch biosensors are promising for the noninvasive determination of physiological parameters in perspiration for fitness and health monitoring. However, various prerequisites need to be met for the development of such biosensors, including the creation of a flexible conductive platform, bending/contact stability, fast electrochemical kinetics, and immobilization of biomolecules. Here, we describe a conducting polymer-reinforced laser-irradiated graphene (LIG) network as a heterostructured three-dimensional (3D) transducer for flexible skin patch biosensors. LIG with a hierarchically interconnected graphene structure is geometrically patterned on polyimide via localized laser irradiation as a flexible conductive platform, which is then reinforced by poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) as a conductive binder (PEDOT/LIG) with improved structural/contact stability and electrochemical kinetics. The interconnected pores of the reinforced PEDOT/LIG function as a 3D host matrix for high loading of "artificial" (Prussian blue, PB) and natural enzymes (lactate oxidase, LOx), forming a compact and heterostructured 3D transducer (LOx/PB-PEDOT/LIG) for lactate biosensing with excellent sensitivity (11.83 μA mM^-1). We demonstrated the fabrication of flexible skin patch biosensors comprising a custom-built integrated three-electrode system achieve amperometric detection of lactate in artificial sweat over a wide physiological linear range of 0-18 mM. The advantage of this facile and versatile transducer is further illustrated by the development of a folded 3D wristband lactate biosensor and a dual channel biosensors for simultaneous monitoring of lactate and glucose. This innovative design concept of a heterostructured transducer for flexible biosensors combined with a versatile fabrication approach could potentially drive the development of new wearable and skin-mountable biosensors for monitoring various physiological parameters in biofluids for noninvasive fitness and health management.

Electrochemically Obtained Polysulfonates Doped Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) Films-Effects of the Dopant's Chain Flexibility and Molecular Weight Studied by Electrochemical, Microgravimetric and XPS Methods

Electrochemically synthesized poly(3,4,-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films obtained in the presence of eight different polysulfonate dopants are comparatively studied by means of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Differences with respect to oxidation and doping levels (OL and DL), polymerization efficiency and redox behavior are revealed based on the interplay of three factors: the type of the dopant (acid or salt form), flexibility of the polysulfonate chains and molecular weight of the polysulfonate species. For the rigid- and semi-rigid-chain dopants, use of the salt form results in higher OL and DL values and substantial involvement of solvent molecules in the course of polymerization and redox transitions whereas in the presence of their acid form compact PEDOT films with minor ionic-solvent fluxes upon redox transitions are formed. In contrast, use of the salt form of the flexible chain polysulfonates results in PEDOT with lower OL and DL in comparison to the corresponding acid form. Significant effects are observed when comparing flexible chain dopants with different molecular weights. From a practical point of view the present investigations demonstrate the large scope of possibilities to influence some basic properties of PEDOT (Ol and DL, intensity and type of the ionic and solvent fluxes upon redox transition) depending on the used polysulfonate dopants.

A Three-Dimensional Electrochemical Biosensor Integrated with Hydrogel Enables Real-Time Monitoring of Cells under Their In Vivo-like Microenvironment

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture can better reproduce the in vivo cell environment and has been extensively used in fields such as tissue engineering, drug screening, and pathological research. Despite the tremendous advancement of 3D cultures, an analysis technique that could collect real-time information of the biological processes therein is sorely lacking. Electrochemical sensing with fast response and high sensitivity has played a vital role in real-time monitoring of living cells, but most current sensors are based on planar electrodes and fail to perfectly match the 3D cell culture matrix. Herein, we developed a robust 3D electrochemical sensor based on functionalized graphene foam (GF), which could be integrated with hydrogels for the 3D culture and in situ monitoring of cells for the first time. Specifically, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) electrodeposited on GF (GF/Pt NPs) conferred the prominent electrochemical sensing performance, and the anti-fouling coating of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) endowed the GF/Pt NPs electrode with greatly improved stability. As a proof of concept, collagen hydrogel with microglia seeded in was filled into the interspace of the 3D GF/Pt NPs/PEDOT sensor to establish an integrated platform, which allowed the successful real-time monitoring of reactive oxygen species released from microglia in the collagen matrix. Given the versatility, our proposed biosensor in conjunction with various 3D culture models will serve as an excellent tool to provide biochemical information of cells under their in vivo-like microenvironment.

Electrochemical Sensors Based on Conducting Polymers for the Aqueous Detection of Biologically Relevant Molecules

Electrochemical sensors appear as low-cost, rapid, easy to use, and in situ devices for determination of diverse analytes in a liquid solution. In that context, conducting polymers are much-explored sensor building materials because of their semiconductivity, structural versatility, multiple synthetic pathways, and stability in environmental conditions. In this state-of-the-art review, synthetic processes, morphological characterization, and nanostructure formation are analyzed for relevant literature about electrochemical sensors based on conducting polymers for the determination of molecules that (i) have a fundamental role in the human body function regulation, and (ii) are considered as water emergent pollutants. Special focus is put on the different types of micro- and nanostructures generated for the polymer itself or the combination with different materials in a composite, and how the rough morphology of the conducting polymers based electrochemical sensors affect their limit of detection. Polypyrroles, polyanilines, and polythiophenes appear as the most recurrent conducting polymers for the construction of electrochemical sensors. These conducting polymers are usually built starting from bifunctional precursor monomers resulting in linear and branched polymer structures; however, opportunities for sensitivity enhancement in electrochemical sensors have been recently reported by using conjugated microporous polymers synthesized from multifunctional monomers.

Electrochemical DNA Sensor Based on the Copolymer of Proflavine and Azure B for Doxorubicin Determination

A DNA sensor has been developed for the determination of doxorubicin by consecutive electropolymerization of an equimolar mixture of Azure B and proflavine and adsorption of native DNA from salmon sperm on a polymer film. Electrochemical investigation showed a difference in the behavior of individual drugs polymerized and their mixture. The use of the copolymer offered some advantages, i.e., a higher roughness of the surface, a wider range of the pH sensitivity of the response, a denser and more robust film, etc. The formation of the polymer film and its redox properties were studied using scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. For the doxorubicin determination, its solution was mixed with DNA and applied on the polymer surface. After that, charge transfer resistance was assessed in the presence of [Fe(CN)₆]^3-/4- as the redox probe. Its value regularly grew with the doxorubicin concentration in the range from 0.03 to 10 nM (limit of detection 0.01 nM). The DNA sensor was tested on the doxorubicin preparations and spiked samples mimicking blood serum. The recovery was found to be 98-106%. The DNA sensor developed can find application for the determination of drug residues in blood and for the pharmacokinetics studies.

Electrodeposited poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with graphene oxide for the simultaneous voltammetric determination of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films were electrodeposited by cyclic voltammetry on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in aqueous solution. Three kinds of supporting electrolytes were used, viz. graphene oxide (GO), phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and GO in PBS, respectively. The surface morphology of the modified electrodes was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance of the modified electrodes was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy by using the hexacyanoferrate redox system. The results demonstrate that the PEDOT-GO/GCE, which was electropolymerized in aqueous solutions containing EDOT and GO, shows the best electrochemical activities compared with other modified electrodes. The electrochemical behaviors of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The PEDOT-GO/GCE exhibits enhanced electrocatalytic activities towards these important biomolecules. Under physiological pH conditions and in the mixed system of AA, DA and UA, the modified GCE exhibits the following figures of merit: (a) a linear voltammetric response in the concentration ranges of 100-1000 μM for AA, 6.0-200 μM for DA, and 40-240 μM for UA; (b) well separated oxidation peaks near 31, 213 and 342 mV (vs. saturated Ag/AgCl) for AA, DA and UA, respectively; and (c) detection of limits (at S/N = 3) of 20, 2.0 and 10 μM. The results demonstrate that GO, based on its relatively large number of anionic sites, can be used as the sole weak electrolyte and charge balance dopant for the preparation of functionally doped conducting polymers by electrodeposition. Bionanotube/Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) Nanohybrid as an Electrode for the Neural Interface and Dopamine Sensor

Poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is a promising conductive material widely used for interfacing with tissues in biomedical fields because of its unique properties. However, obtaining high charge injection capability and high stability remains challenging. In this study, pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified by dopamine (DA) self-polymerization on the surface polydopamine (PDA@CNTs) were utilized as dopants of PEDOT to prepare hybrid films through electrochemical deposition on the indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The PDA@CNTs-PEDOT film of the nanotube network topography exhibited excellent stability and strong adhesion to the ITO substrate compared with PEDOT and PEDOT/ p-toulene sulfonate. The PDA@CNTs-PEDOT-coated ITO electrodes demonstrated lower impedance and enhanced charge storage capacity than the bare ITO. When applying exogenous electrical stimulation (ES), robust long neurites sprouted from the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons cultured on the PDA@CNTs-PEDOT film. Moreover, ES promoted Schwann cell migration out from the DRG spheres and enhanced myelination. The PDA@CNTs-PEDOT film served as an excellent electrochemical sensor for the detection of DA in the presence of biomolecule interferences. Results would shed light into the advancement of conducting nanohybrids for applications in the multifunctional bioelectrode in neuroscience.

Graphene-derived nanomaterials as recognition elements for electrochemical determination of heavy metal ions: a review

This review (with 155 refs.) summarizes the progress made in the past few years in the field of electrochemical sensors based on graphene-derived materials for the determination of heavy metal ions. Following an introduction of this field and a discussion of the various kinds of modified graphenes including graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide, the review covers graphene based electrodes modified (or doped) with (a) heteroatoms, (b) metal nanoparticles, (c) metal oxides, (d) small organic molecules, (e) polymers, and (f) ternary nanocomposites. Tables are provided that afford an overview of representative methods and materials for fabricating electrochemical sensors. Furthermore, sensing mechanisms are discussed. A concluding section presents new perspectives, opportunities and current challenges. Complexation of a Conjugated Polyelectrolyte and Impact on Optoelectronic Properties

Electrostatic assembly of conjugated polyelectrolytes, which combine a π-conjugated polymer backbone with pendant ionic groups, offer an opportunity for tuning materials properties and a new route for formulating concentrated inks for printable electronics. Complex coacervation, a liquid-liquid phase separation upon complexation of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in solution, is used to form dense suspensions of π-conjugated material. A model system of a cationic conjugated polyelectrolyte poly(3-[6'-{N-butylimidazolium}hexyl]thiophene) bromide and sodium poly(styrenesulfonate) dissolved in tetrahydrofuran-water mixtures was used to investigate this complexation behavior of conjugated polyelectrolytes in terms of electrostatic strength, solvent quality, and polymer concentration. The balance of electrostatic interaction between the oppositely charged polyelectrolytes together with their charge compensating counterions and solvent quality for the hydrophobic π-conjugated backbone leads to a rich phase diagram of soluble complexes, precipitates, and complex coacervates. The conjugated polyelectrolyte in the polyelectrolyte complexes has an increased π-conjugation length and enhanced emissivity, with ideal chain configurations due to the reduction of kink sites and torsional disorder. The advantageous photophysical properties in the dense liquid phases makes the scheme attractive for the large-scale processing of optoelectronic devices, chemical sensors, and bioelectronics components.

Application of the voltammetric electronic tongue based on nanocomposite modified electrodes for identifying rice wines of different geographical origins

In the study, the voltammetric electronic tongue based on three nanocomposites modified electrodes was applied for the identification of rice wines of different geographical origins. The nanocomposites were prepared by gold and copper nanoparticles in the presence of conducting polymers (polymer sulfanilic acid, polymer glutamic acid) and carboxylic multi - walled carbon nanotubes. The modified electrodes showed high sensitivity to guanosine - 5' - monophosphate disodium salt, tyrosine and gallic acid which have good correlation with the geographical origins of rice wines. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to display the surface morphologies of the nanocomposites, and cyclic voltammetry was applied to study the electrochemical behaviors of the taste substances on the electrode surfaces. Four types of electrochemical parameters (pH, scan rates, accumulation potentials and time) were optimized for getting a low limit of the detection of each taste substance. The geographical information of rice wines was obtained by the modified electrodes based on two types of multi - frequency large amplitude pulse voltammetry, and "area method" was applied for extracting the feature data from the original information obtained. Based on the area feature data, principal component analysis, locality preserving projection (LPP), and linear discriminant analysis were applied for the classification of the rice wines of different geographical origins, and LPP presented the best results; extreme learning machine (ELM) and alibrary for support vector machines were applied for predicting the geographical origins of rice wines, and ELM performed better.
