A comparison study of nanofiber, microfiber, and new composite nano/microfiber polymers used as sorbents for on-line solid phase extraction in chromatography system

Advanced nanofibrous sorbents for the extraction of pollutants from river water and protein-containing matrices

The extraction efficiencies of thirty types of fibers produced by meltblown, alternating current electrospinning, and meltblown-co-electrospinning technologies were tested as advanced sorbents for on-line solid-phase extraction in a high-performance liquid chromatography system have been tested and compared with a commercial C18 sorbent. The properties of each fiber, which were often depended on the production process, and their applicability were demonstrated with the extraction of the model analytes nitrophenols and chlorophenols from various matrices including river water and to purify complex matrix human serum and bovine serum albumin from macromolecular ballast. Polycaprolactone fibers outperformed other polymers and were selected for subsequent modifications including (i) incorporation of hybrid carbon nanoparticles, i.e., graphene, activated carbon, and carbon black into the polymer prior to fiber fabrication, and (ii) surface modification by dip coating with polyhydroxy modifiers including graphene oxide, tannin, dopamine, hesperidin, and heparin. These novel fibrous sorbents were comparable to commercial C18 sorbent and provided excellent analyte recoveries of 70-112% even from the protein-containing matrices.

Exploring the hypolipidemic effects of bergenin from Saxifraga melanocentra Franch: mechanistic insights and potential for hyperlipidemia treatment

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study was to explore the hypolipidemic effects of bergenin extracted from Saxifraga melanocentra Franch (S. melanocentra), which is a frequently utilized Tibetan medicinal plant known for its diverse bioactivities. Establishing a quality control system for black stem saxifrage is crucial to ensure the rational utilization of its medicinal resources.

METHODS

A one-step polyamide medium-pressure liquid chromatography technique was applied to isolate and prepare bergenin from a methanol extract of S. melanocentra. A zebrafish model of hyperlipidemia was used to investigate the potential hypolipidemic effects of bergenin.

RESULTS

The results revealed that bergenin exhibited substantial hypo efficacy in vivo. Specifically, bergenin significantly reduced the levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) while simultaneously increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) levels. At the molecular level, bergenin exerted its effects by inhibiting the expression of FASN, SREBF1, HMGCRα, RORα, LDLRα, IL-1β, and TNF while promoting the expression of IL-4 at the transcriptional level. Molecular docking analysis further demonstrated the strong binding affinity of bergenin to proteins such as FASN, SREBF1, HMGCRα, RORα, LDLRα, IL-4, IL-1β, and TNF.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings indicate that bergenin modulates lipid metabolism by regulating lipid and cholesterol synthesis as well as inflammatory responses through signaling pathways associated with FASN, SREBF1, and RORα. These results position bergenin as a potential candidate for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Small nanofibrous disks for preconcentration of environmental contaminants followed by direct in-vial elution and chromatographic determination

A novel method for the extraction of river water contaminants as model analytes of ranging polarities, including bisphenols A, C, S, Z, fenoxycarb, kadethrin, and deltamethrin, using small compact fibrous disks has been developed and validated. Polymer nanofibers and microfibers prepared from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), polypropylene, polyurethane, polyacrylonitrile, poly(lactic acid), and polycaprolactone doped with graphene were evaluated in terms of extraction efficiency, selectivity, and stability in organic solutions. Our novel extraction procedure comprised preconcentration of analytes from 150 mL river water to 1 mL of eluent using a compact nanofibrous disk freely vortexed in the sample. Small nanofibrous disks with a diameter of 10 mm were cut from a compact and mechanically stable 1-2 mm thick micro/nanofibrous sheet. After 60 min extraction in a magnetically stirred sample located in a beaker, the disk was removed from the liquid and washed with water. Then, the disk was inserted into a 1.5 mL HPLC vial and extracted with 1.0 ml methanol upon short intensive shaking. Our approach avoided the undesired problems related to the manual handling typical of "classical" SPE procedure since the extraction was carried out directly in the HPLC vial. No sample evaporation, reconstitution, or pipetting was required. The nanofibrous disk is affordable, needs no support or holder, and its use avoids creation of plastic waste originating from disposable materials. Recovery of compounds from the disks was 47.2-141.4% depending on the type of polymer used and the relative standard deviations calculated from 5 extractions ranged from 6.1 to 11.8% for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), 6.3-14.8% for polyurethane, and 1.7-16.2% for polycaprolactone doped with graphene. A small enrichment factor was obtained for polar bisphenol S using all sorbents. A higher preconcentration reaching up to 40-fold was achieved for lipophilic compounds such as deltamethrin when using poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) and graphene-doped polycaprolactone.

Innovative, simple, and green: A sample preparation method based on 3D printed polymers

The present study evaluates the capability of fifteen 3D printed thermoplastic polymers as novel stationary phases for the extraction of forty-three physicochemically diverse analytes from fortified human oral fluid samples. Prototype extraction devices were prepared in 96-well plate-compatible format using fused deposition modeling 3D printer. The sample preparation was performed with 5-step protocol utilizing 96-well plates and semiautomated benchtop shaker. All resulting extracts were analyzed via high-performance liquid chromatography (operated in reversed-phase gradient elution mode) and tandem mass spectrometry (with electrospray ionization and triple quadrupole mass spectrometer). Exceptionally favorable results were observed for three polymer types: polyamide 6 (reinforced with 15% carbon fiber), LAYFOMM-60 (polyurethane with water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol), and S-FLEX 90A (thermoplastic polyurethane). Furthermore, this study also introduces an automated and repeatable 3D printing method for the fast fabrication of high-throughput, and highly selective sample preparation devices, most of which are ready-to-use without any additional processing or chemical functionalization. As such, the proposed printing method represents a significant step towards the introduction of novel polymeric stationary phases for analytical sample preparation, thus providing laboratory personnel with a method that is safer and more convenient, while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

Nanofiber-based sorbents: Current status and applications in extraction methods

Advanced sorbents gradually become a research hotspot on account of the increasing attention paid to environmental problems. Due to the prominent physicochemical features of nanofibers (NFs), such as high porosity, large surface area, favorable interconnectivity, high adsorption capacity, wettability, and the possibility of surface modification using functional groups, these nanostructures are regarded as excellent candidates for extraction applications. Therefore, the research in the field of NFs and their nanocomposites has been increasing in recent years. In the present review, we summarize the most recent studies on NFs-based sorbents focusing on strategies for preparation, characterization, and their unique capabilities as porous sorbents in various sorbent-based extraction methods. Moreover, we further described the performance and selectivity of sorbents to achieve improved extraction efficiency. Finally, some perspectives on the challenges and outlook are provided to aid future investigations related to this topic.

Composite Nanofibers as Novel Sorbents for On-Line and Off-Line Solid-Phase Extraction in Chromatographic System: A Comparison for Detection of Free Biogenic Monoamines and Their Metabolites in Plasma

Two different pretreatment approaches have been used for the enrichment and separation of biogenic monoamines and metabolites in plasma for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination. The first approach, based on on-line packed-fiber solid-phase extraction (PFSPE) coupled with HPLC, allows for the simultaneous detection of epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), 3-methoxyl epinephrine (MN), norepinephrine (NMN), 3-methoxytyramine (3-MT), and 5-hydroxytryptamin (5-HT). Using this developed on-line PFSPE–HPLC method, the limit of detections (LODs) of the seven analytes ranged from 1 ng/mL (NMN and MN) to 2 ng/mL (NE, E, DA, 3-MT and 5-HT). The reportable ranges were 5–300 ng/mL for NE and DA, 5–100 ng/mL for E, and 5–200 ng/mL for NMN, MN, 3-MT and 5-HT. The off-line PFSPE–HPLC was employed in the second approach and could provide simultaneous detection of NE, E, DA, NMN, and MN. The linearity was verified in the range of 0.5–20 ng/mL (NE, E, and DA) and 20–250 ng/mL (NMN and MN). The LODs of the five analytes ranged from 0.2 ng/mL (NE, E, and DA) to 5 ng/mL (NMN and MN). This study verified the possibility of using nanofibers as an adsorbent in an on-line PFSPE–HPLC system for the determination of biogenic monoamines and their metabolites in human plasma. Compared with the off-line PFSPE approach, the on-line PFSPE method deserves attention mainly due to its greener character, derived from the automation of the process and high-throughput with less operators’ handling.

Nanofibrous Online Solid-Phase Extraction Coupled with Liquid Chromatography for the Determination of Neonicotinoid Pesticides in River Waters

Polymeric nano- and microfibers were tested as potential sorbents for the extraction of five neonicotinoids from natural waters. Nanofibrous mats were prepared from polycaprolactone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polystyrene, polyamide 6, polyacrylonitrile, and polyimide, as well as microfibers of polyethylene, a polycaprolactone nano- and microfiber conjugate, and polycaprolactone microfibers combined with polyvinylidene fluoride nanofibers. Polyimide nanofibers were selected as the most suitable sorbent for these analytes and the matrix. A Lab-In-Syringe system enabled automated preconcentration via online SPE of large sample volumes at low pressure with analyte separation by HPLC. Several mat layers were housed in a solvent filter holder integrated into the injection loop of an HPLC system. After loading 2 mL sample on the sorbent, the mobile phase eluted the retained analytes onto the chromatographic column. Extraction efficiencies of 68.8–83.4% were achieved. Large preconcentration factors ranging from 70 to 82 allowed reaching LOD and LOQ values of 0.4 to 1.7 and 1.2 to 5.5 µg·L⁻¹, respectively. Analyte recoveries from spiked river waters ranged from 53.8% to 113.3% at the 5 µg·L⁻¹ level and from 62.8% to 119.8% at the 20 µg·L⁻¹ level. The developed methodology proved suitable for the determination of thiamethoxam, clothianidin, imidacloprid, and thiacloprid, whereas matrix peak overlapping inhibited quantification of acetamiprid.

Polyamide Noncoated Device for Adsorption-Based Microextraction and Novel 3D Printed Thin-Film Microextraction Supports

Polyamide noncoated device for adsorption-based microextraction (PANDA microextraction) is a brand new, easy to prepare, environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and efficient sample preparation method created entirely with the use of 3D printing. The proposed method is based on the extractive proprieties of the unmodified polyamide and carbon fiber blends and is compared with the highly selective thin-film microextraction (TFME). In addition, 3D printing was used to simplify the process of TFME. Prototype sample preparation devices were evaluated by the extraction of oral fluid spiked with 38 small molecules with diverse chemical natures, such as lipophilicity in the log P range of 0.2–7.2. The samples were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. The results indicate that chemically and thermally resistant 3D printed supports can be successfully used as a cost-saving, environmentally friendly solution for the preparation of TFME devices, alternative to the conventional metal supports, with only marginal differences in the extraction yield (mean = 4.0%, median = 1.8%, range = 0.0–22.3%, n = 38). Even more remarkably, in some cases, the newly proposed PANDA microextraction method exceeded the reference TFME in terms of the extraction efficacy and offered excellent sample cleanup as favorable matrix effects were observed (mean = −8.5%, median = 7.5%, range = −34.7–20.0%, n = 20). This innovative approach paves the road to the simplified sample preparation with the use of emerging extractive 3D printing polymers.

High-performance carbon black electrode for oxygen reduction reaction and oxidation of atrazine by electro-Fenton process

The aim of this study is to produce an electrode that can be used in H₂O₂ production and Electro-Fenton (EF) process by an effective, cheap, and easy method. For this reason, a superhydrophobic electrode with a higher PTFE ratio and high thickness was produced with a simple press. The produced electrode was used in the production of H₂O₂ and mineralization of Atrazine. First, the effect of pH, cathode voltage, and operation time on H₂O₂ production was evaluated. The maximum H₂O₂ concentration (409 mg/L), the highest current efficiency (99.80%), and the lowest electrical energy consumption (3.16 kWh/kg) were obtained at 0.8 V, 7.0 of pH, and 120 min, and the stability of the electrode was evaluated up to 720 min. Then, the effects of the operational conditions (pH, cathode voltage, operating time, and catalyst concentration) in electro-Fenton were evaluated. The fastest degradation of Atrazine (>99%) was obtained at 2.0 V, 3.0 of pH, and 0.3 mM of Fe²⁺ in 15 min. In the final part of the study, the degradation intermediates were identified, and the characterization of the electrode was evaluated by SEM, XRD, FT-IR, tensiometer, potentiostat, and elemental analyzer.

Polycaprolactone Composite Micro/Nanofibrous Material as an Alternative to Restricted Access Media for Direct Extraction and Separation of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs from Human Serum Using Column-Switching Chromatography

Application of the poly-ɛ-caprolactone composite sorbent consisting of the micro- and nanometer fibers for the on-line extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from a biological matrix has been introduced. A 100 μL human serum sample spiked with ketoprofen, naproxen, sodium diclofenac, and indomethacin was directly injected in the extraction cartridge filled with the poly-ɛ-caprolactone composite sorbent. This cartridge was coupled with a chromatographic instrument via a six-port switching valve allowing the analyte extraction and separation within a single analytical run. The 1.5 min long extraction step isolated the analytes from the proteinaceous matrix was followed by their 13 min HPLC separation using Ascentis Express RP-Amide (100 × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) column. The recovery of all analytes from human serum tested at three concentration levels ranged from 70.1% to 118.7%. The matrix calibrations were carried out in the range 50 to 20,000 ng mL⁻¹ with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.996. The detection limit was 15 ng mL⁻¹, and the limit of quantification corresponded to 50 ng mL⁻¹. The developed method was validated and successfully applied for the sodium diclofenac determination in real patient serum. Our study confirmed the ability of the poly-ɛ-caprolactone composite sorbent to remove the proteins from the biological matrix, thus serving as an alternative to the application of restricted-access media.

High throughput determination of free biogenic monoamines and their metabolites in urine using thin-film solid phase microextraction

UPLC-MS/MS methods are the gold standard for routine, high-throughput measurements of biogenic monoamines for the diagnosis of catecholamine-producing tumors. However, this cannot be achieved without employing efficient sample pretreatment methods. Therefore, two pretreatment methods, thin-film solid phase microextraction (TF-SPME) and packed fibers solid phase extraction (PFSPE), were developed and evaluated for the analysis of biogenic monoamines and their metabolites in urine. A hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) coating was chosen for the thin-film blade format SPME method and compared with a Polycrown ether (PCE) composite nanofiber used as an adsorbent for the PFSPE method. Under optimal conditions, the absolute extraction recovery and relative matrix effect of the newly developed TF-SPME method were determined to be 35.7-74.8% and 0.47-3.63%, respectively. The linearity was 0.25-500 ng mL^-1 for norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, normetanephrine 3-methoxytyramine, serotonin, histamine, and 0.1-500 ng mL^-1 for metanephrine. The intra-and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 0.7-8.7%, and the respective accuracies were calculated to be 90.8-104.7% and 89.5-104.5% for TF-SPME. Compared with the PFSPE method, the TF-SPME method had a higher extraction efficiency, lower matrix effects and a wider linear range for eight target substances, which ensured higher accuracy of simultaneous detection of all compounds of interest. Therefore, the proposed TF-SPME method can be employed for the high throughput screening for neuroendocrine tumors in a routine clinical setting and other relative research by simultaneous quantitation of urine eight biological monoamines in a single run.

A review of new adsorbents for separation of BTEX biomarkers

The biomarker analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEXs) in biological samples is the primary technique for evaluating these compounds in occupational and environmental exposures. The BTEX biomarkers are widely used to study the BTEX distribution in the environment and workplaces. Liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase liquid extraction are among the most commonly used conventional methods to analyze biological indices of BTEXs. New methods have been proposed to analyze BTEX biomarkers using novel adsorbents such as sol-gel composite nanotubes, molecularly imprinted polymers and metal-organic frameworks, which are based on the application of needle trap devices, microextraction by packed sorbent, and solid-phase microextraction techniques. This paper provides an overview of new methods since 2015 regarding applying microextraction methods based on new adsorbents and analyzing BTEX biomarker compounds for occupational and environmental exposures. The results were compared with the liquid-phase microextraction methods recommended for urinary BTEX biomarkers.

Preparation of a Composite Scaffold from Polycaprolactone and Hydroxyapatite Particles by Means of Alternating Current Electrospinning

This research involved the production of polycaprolactone fiber layers via the alternating current electrospinning method. To construct the micro/nanofiber scaffold, mixtures of two molecular weight solutions, M _n 45 000 and M _n 80 000, were spun in differing proportions in a solvent system containing acetic acid, formic acid, and acetone in a ratio of 1:1:1. The composite fiber materials with hydroxyapatite particles were prepared from a solution that combined the different molecular weight solutions at a ratio of 1:3. The study resulted in the preparation of fiber layers containing 0, 5, 10, and 15% (wt) hydroxyapatite particles from the dry mass of the polycaprolactone. The strength, wettability, and surface energy of the composite materials were examined, and the results demonstrated that hydroxyapatite affects the fiber diameters, strength, and surface energy and, thus, the wettability of the fiber layers. The fibrous layers produced were further tested for cytotoxicity and cell viability and proliferation. The results obtained thus strongly indicate that the resulting bulky micro/nanofiber layers are suitable for further testing with a view to their eventual application in the field of bone tissue engineering.

Recent progress in determination of ochratoxin a in foods by chromatographic and mass spectrometry methods

Ochratoxin A is a highly toxic mycotoxin and has posed great threat to human health. Due to its serious toxicity and wide contamination, great efforts have been made to develop reliable determination methods. In this review, analytical methods are comprehensively summarized in terms of sample preparation strategy and instrumental analysis. Detailed method is described according to the food commodities in the order of cereal, wine, coffee, beer, cocoa, dried fruit and spice. This review mainly focuses on the recent advances, especially reported in the last decade. At last, challenges and perspectives are also discussed to achieve better advancement and promote practical application in this field.

A dispersive solid phase extraction adsorbent based on aptamer modified chitosan nanofibers for zearalenone separation in corn, wheat, and beer samples

Highly selective separation of trace bio-toxins in food samples has long been a hot topic pursued by analytical chemists. In this paper, chitosan nanofibers prepared by freeze-drying were modified with aptamers for dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) of trace zearalenone. The morphology of achieved chitosan nanofibers was found to be uniform and continuous, and the length was at the micron level with about a 400 nm diameter. The immobilization capacity of the aptamer was as high as 10.1 μg on 5 mg chitosan nanofibers with good stability and repeatability, owing to the high specific surface area of nanofibers. The aptamer modified chitosan nanofibers (Apt-CNFs) showed specific selectivity to zearalenone with a selectivity coefficient of 2.65 compared to the scrambled oligonucleotide functionalized CNFs, and the selectivity factors over other analogs and reference compounds were from 1.57 to 50.0. After the optimization of extraction conditions, the Apt-CNF based dSPE was coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography for zearalenone monitoring, and a good linear range of 0.06-10.0 μg L-1 was achieved with a detection limit of 18.0 ng L-1. The spiking recoveries of 101-108%, 100-110%, and 98.3-101% were achieved for trace zearalenone in corn, wheat, and beer samples, respectively. The residual zearalenone was detected in corn and wheat with a content of 0.365 and 0.0775 μg g-1, respectively.

On-line polydopamine coating as a new way to functionalize polypropylene fiber sorbent for solid phase extraction

Effective process, including a cartridge packing polypropylene fiber sorbent modified by following on-line polydopamine coating, for on-line solid phase extraction in 2D UHPLC system has been developed. Hydrophobic surface of mechanically stable polypropylene fibers was hydrophilized using an automated and reproducible in situ coating process to enable good wettability and effective extraction of polar compounds. Polymerization mixture consisting dopamine and TRIS buffer was circulated through the cartridge containing polypropylene fibers using a peristaltic pump to achieve polymerization. This process was optimized in terms of dopamine amount in the polymerization mixture, its flow rate, and polymerization time. Best results were obtained with 25 mL polymerization mixture containing 20 mg dopamine circulated through the cartridge at a flow rate of 2.07 mL min^-1 for 60 min. Prepared cartridges were evaluated via measurement of the recovery and reproducibility using chlorogenic acid as a model compound. Overall reproducibility of our multistep process including eight cartridges in 2D UHPLC system, each measured in triplicate, was 3.61% (n = 24).

Poly-ε-caprolactone Nanofibrous Polymers: A Simple Alternative to Restricted Access Media for Extraction of Small Molecules from Biological Matrixes

Poly-ε-caprolactone nanofibrous polymer has been used as an alternative to restricted access media for extraction of protein-containing biological samples and direct transfer in the chromatographic system. Three commercial cartridges differing in length and internal diameter have been manually packed with the composite material prepared from poly-ε-caprolactone nanofibers coated on poly-ε-caprolactone microfibrous scaffold and connected to the column-switching chromatographic system. Bovine milk and human serum (25 μL) spiked with a mixture of methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, and butylparaben in a concentration range of 1-100 μg mL^-1 were online extracted using the cartridge-containing fibers. Then, 5 and 20% (v/v) aqueous methanol was applied as the washing mobile phase. While the ballast protein macromolecules were quantitatively eluted from the nano/microfibrous composite sorbent, the parabens were retained. After the mobile phase was switched to a stronger one, these compounds were then eluted from the extraction sorbent, directed in the analytical column, and finally separated. An extraction efficiency of 86-101% for all parabens achieved using the optimum-sized cartridge and a repeatability of the extraction procedure of 0.06-1.95% RSD were obtained.

Nanofibers as advanced sorbents for on-line solid phase extraction in liquid chromatography: A tutorial

Polymers in nanofiber format promise a great potential as sorbents for extraction techniques. This tutorial provides an overview of direct coupling of extraction techniques based on nanofibers to liquid chromatography. Arrangements of the fibers in conventional extraction cartridges are demonstrated. Selection of suitable nanomaterials according to their surface density, wettability, and mechanical stability is proposed and personal experience of the authors commented. Optimization of on-line extraction procedure, practical aspects, technical problems, pitfalls, pros, and cons of using nanofibers for extraction in high-pressure chromatography systems are also discussed and several examples presented. The following text comprehensively summarizes numerous reports that dealt with the topic. Future perspectives of advanced nanofiber materials and approaches that concern polymer fibers modifications are also included.

Stacked-Cup Carbon Nanotube Flexible Paper Based on Soy Lecithin and Natural Rubber

Stacked-cup carbon nanotubes (SCCNTs) are generally referred to as carbon nanofibers (CNFs). SCCNTs are much less expensive to fabricate and are regarded as good polymer modifiers suitable for large-scale production. Flexible, SCCNT-based soy lecithin biocomposites were fabricated using liquid natural rubber latex as binder. Natural polymers and the SCCNTs were dispersed in a green solvent using a benchtop high-pressure homogenizer. The inks were simply brush-on painted onto cellulose fiber networks and compacted by a hydraulic press so as to transform into conductive paper-like form. The resulting flexible SCCNT papers demonstrated excellent resistance against severe folding and bending tests, with volume resistivity of about 85 Ω·cm at 20 wt % SCCNT loading. The solvent enabled formation of hydrogen bonding between natural rubber and soy lecithin. Thermomechanical measurements indicated that the biocomposites have good stability below and above glass transition points. Moreover, the SCCNT biocomposites had high through-plane thermal conductivity of 5 W/mK and 2000 kJ/m³K volumetric heat capacity, ideal for thermal interface heat transfer applications.

An online field-assisted micro-solid-phase extraction device coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography for the direct analysis of solid samples

Herein, a total online device based on field-assisted extraction (FAE), micro-solid-phase extraction (μ-SPE), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was designed. Solid samples were pretreated with ultrasound-microwave synergic effects, and then the extract was cleaned up online with a monolithic column, followed by HPLC analysis. The cross-actions between ultrasound and microwave along with other extraction parameters were studied systematically. The efficiency of this online method was verified in the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in foods and tetracycline antibiotics (TCAs) in cosmetic samples. The detection limits of nine PAHs including fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, pyrene, and benzo[a]pyrene were all within 0.075-0.30 μg/kg, as well as four TCAs including oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline were within 0.02-0.06 μg/kg. Six PAHs were found in roast potatoes and baked fish and the recoveries were in the range of 71.5-119.7% with RSDs of 0.2-10.9% (n = 3). The recoveries for TCAs in cosmetic samples were in the range of 75.3-118.0% with RSDs lower than 8.2% (n = 3). Compared with those offline methods, this total online FAE-μ-SPE-HPLC method not only simplifies the operation process, but also increases the precision and accuracy. Beyond trace analytes analysis in solid and semi-solid matrixes, application of this total online analysis method can also be extended to investigate field-assisted extraction mechanisms. Evaluation of the tubing material and physical dimensions on the performance of extraction columns for on-line sample preparation-LC-MS/MS

Nowadays, high analytical throughputs are required considering an increasing demand for faster, simple and improved methods to analyze contaminants in a considerable number of samples. Generally, these compounds are present in complex matrices in contact with a high number of interferents becoming their determination difficult at low concentration. In this context, on-line extraction techniques arose to improve the extraction as well as separation power, while minimizing errors related to human sample manipulation. This paper describes a study regarding the development and optimization of columns used as an extraction device in multidimensional liquid chromatography. The main goals were the evaluation of the material used as column body as well as the investigation of the tube dimensions (internal diameter and length) in the extraction performance. Firstly, several tube materials were tested (steel, fused silica, PEEK, among others) being steel whose reported the best performance and was consequently chose for further studies. The investigation about the effects of the columns physical dimensions revealed a linear relationship between performance and the amount of sorbent utilized as extractive phase. However, when different columns with same amount of sorbent were tested results suggests that both i.d. and lengths play an important role in extraction efficiency. The longest columns with lower internal diameter showed the best results favoring the radial as well as axial analytes diffusion into the extraction column. After evaluation of these column variables, applications were carried out employing several different analytes belonging to various chemical classes and practical utilization, in order to reinforce the versatility as well as the robustness of this proposed study.

Current Trends in Fully Automated On-Line Analytical Techniques for Beverage Analysis

The determination of target analytes in complex matrices such as beverages requires a series of analytical steps to obtain a reliable analysis. This critical review presents the current trends in sample preparation techniques based on solid phase extraction miniaturization, automation and on-line coupling. Techniques discussed include solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), in-tube solid-phase microextraction (in-tube SPME) and turbulent-flow chromatography (TFC). Advantages and limitations, as well as several of their main applications in beverage samples are discussed. Finally, fully automated on-line systems that involve extraction, chromatographic separation, and tandem mass spectrometry in one-step are introduced and critically reviewed.

Screening of extraction properties of nanofibers in a sequential injection analysis system using a 3D printed device

A novel application of the three-dimensional printing technology for the automation of solid phase extraction procedures in a low-pressure sequential injection analysis system is presented. A 3D printed device was used as a housing for nanofiber membranes in solid phase extraction. The applicability of the device is demonstrated with the extraction of substances of various physical-chemical properties. Pharmaceuticals including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antihistaminics, and steroidal structures, as well as emerging pollutants such as bisphenols and pesticide metsulfuron methyl were used as model analytes to study the extraction performance of the nanofibers. Six different nanofiber types comprising polyamide, polyethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, polycaprolactone combined with polyvinylidene fluoride, and polyacrylonitrile, produced by electrospinning were tested in solid phase extraction. The suitability of specific nanofibers for particular analytes is demonstrated.
