Microfluidics in environmental analysis: advancements, challenges, and future prospects for rapid and efficient monitoring

Microfluidic devices have emerged as advantageous tools for detecting environmental contaminants due to their portability, ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and rapid response capabilities. These devices have wide-ranging applications in environmental monitoring of air, water, and soil matrices, and have also been applied to agricultural monitoring. Although several previous reviews have explored microfluidic devices' utility, this paper presents an up-to-date account of the latest advancements in this field for environmental monitoring, looking back at the past five years. In this review, we discuss devices for prominent contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, nutrients, microorganisms, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), etc. We cover numerous detection methods (electrochemical, colorimetric, fluorescent, etc.) and critically assess the current state of microfluidic devices for environmental monitoring, highlighting both their successes and limitations. Moreover, we propose potential strategies to mitigate these limitations and offer valuable insights into future research and development directions.

Pollutants in aquatic system: a frontier perspective of emerging threat and strategies to solve the crisis for safe drinking water

Water is an indispensable natural resource and is the most vital substance for the existence of life on earth. However, due to anthropogenic activities, it is being polluted at an alarming rate which has led to serious concern about water shortage across the world. Moreover, toxic contaminants released into water bodies from various industrial and domestic activities negatively affect aquatic and terrestrial organisms and cause serious diseases such as cancer, renal problems, gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and nausea in humans. Therefore, water treatments that can eliminate toxins are very crucial. Unfortunately, pollution treatment remains a difficulty when four broad considerations are taken into account: effectiveness, reusability, environmental friendliness, and affordability. In this situation, protecting water from contamination or creating affordable remedial techniques has become a serious issue. Although traditional wastewater treatment technologies have existed since antiquity, they are both expensive and inefficient. Nowadays, advanced sustainable technical approaches are being created to replace traditional wastewater treatment processes. The present study reviews the sources, toxicity, and possible remediation techniques of the water contaminants.

Screen-Printed Wearable Sweat Sensor for Cost-Effective Assessment of Human Hydration Status through Potassium and Sodium Ion Detection

Human sweat is intricately linked to human health, and unraveling its secrets necessitates a substantial volume of experimental data. However, conventional sensors fabricated via complex processes such as photolithography offer high detection precision at the expense of prohibitive costs. In this study, we presented a cost-effective and high-performance wearable flexible sweat sensor for real-time monitoring of K+ and Na+ concentrations in human sweat, fabricated using screen printing technology. Initially, we evaluated the electrical and electrochemical stability of the screen-printed substrate electrodes, which demonstrated good consistency with a variation within 10% of the relative standard deviation (RSD), meeting the requirements for reliable detection of K+ and Na+ in human sweat. Subsequently, we employed an "ion-electron" transduction layer and an ion-selective membrane to construct the sensors for detecting K+ and Na+. Comprehensive tests were conducted to assess the sensors' sensitivity, linearity, repeatability, resistance to interference, and mechanical deformation capabilities. Furthermore, we evaluated their long-term stability during continuous monitoring and storage. The test results confirmed that the sensor's performance indicators, as mentioned above, met the requirements for analyzing human sweat. In a 10-day continuous and regular monitoring experiment involving volunteers wearing the sensors, a wealth of data revealed a close relationship between K+ and Na+ concentrations in human sweat and hydration status. Notably, we observed that consistent and regular physical exercise effectively enhanced the body's resistance to dehydration. These findings provided a solid foundation for conducting extensive experiments and further exploring the intricate relationship between human sweat and overall health. Our research paved a practical and feasible path for future studies in this domain.

Combined Pressure-Driven and Electroosmotic Slip Flow through Elliptic Cylindrical Microchannels: The Effect of the Eccentricity of the Channel Cross-Section

Electroosmotic force has been used extensively to manipulate fluid flow in a microfluidic system with various channel shapes, especially an elliptic cylinder. However, developing a computational domain and simulating fluid flow for a system involving an elliptic channel consumes a large amount of time. Moreover, the mathematical expression for the fluid velocity of electroosmotic flow in an elliptic channel may be given in the form of the Mathieu functions that have difficulty in achieving the numerical result. In addition, there is clear scientific evidence that confirms the slippage of fluid at the solid-fluid interface in a microscale system. In this study, we present the mathematical model of combined pressure-driven and electroosmotic flow through elliptic microchannels under the slip-fluid condition. From the practical point of view in fluidics, the effect of the eccentricity of the channel cross-section is investigated on the volumetric flow rate to overcome the difficulty. The results show that the substitution of the equivalent circular channel for an elliptic channel provides a valid flow rate under the situation that the areas of both channel cross-sections are equal and the eccentricity of the elliptic cross-section is less than 0.5. Additionally, the flow rate obtained from the substitution is more accurate when the slip length increases or the pressure-gradient-to-external-electric-field ratio decreases.

Activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with zero valent nickel nanoparticles for arsenic, cadmium and lead adsorption from wastewater in a batch and continuous flow modes

Nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs) supported on activated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used as an adsorbent applied towards Pb(II), As(V) and Cd(II) remediation from industrial wastewater. The result revealed the hydrophilic surface of MWCNTs-KOH was enhanced with the incorporation of NiNPs enabling higher surface area, functional groups and pore distribution. Comparatively, the removal of Pb(II), As(V) and Cd(II) on the various adsorbents was reported as NiNPs (58.6 ± 4.1, 46.8 ± 3.7 and 40.5 ± 2.5%), MWCNTs-KOH (68.4 ± 5.0, 65.5 ± 4.2 and 50.7 ± 3.4%) and MWCNTs-KOH@NiNPs (91.2 ± 8.7, 88.5 ± 6.5 and 80.6 ± 5.8%). Using MWCNTs-KOH@NiNPs, the maximum adsorption capacities of 481.0, 440.9 and 415.8 mg/g were obtained for Pb(II), As(V) and Cd(II), respectively. The experimental data were best suited to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model. The fitness of experimental data to the kinetic models in a fixed-bed showed better fitness to Thomas model. The mechanism of metal ion adsorption onto MWCNTs-KOH@NiNPs show a proposed electrostatic attraction, surface adsorption, ion exchange, and pore diffusion due to the incorporated NiNPs. The nanocomposite was highly efficient for 8 adsorption cycles. The results of this study indicate that the synthesized nanocomposite is highly active with capacity for extended use in wastewater treatment.

Lab on a body for biomedical electrochemical sensing applications: The next generation of microfluidic devices

This chapter highlights applications of microfluidic devices toward on-body biosensors. The emerging application of microfluidics to on-body bioanalysis is a new strategy to establish systems for the continuous, real-time, and on-site determination of informative markers present in biofluids, such as sweat, interstitial fluid, blood, saliva, and tear. Electrochemical sensors are attractive to integrate with such microfluidics due to the possibility to be miniaturized. Moreover, on-body microfluidics coupled with bioelectronics enable smart integration with modern information and communication technology. This chapter discusses requirements and several challenges when developing on-body microfluidics such as difficulties in manipulating small sample volumes while maintaining mechanical flexibility, power-consumption efficiency, and simplicity of total automated systems. We describe key components, e.g., microchannels, microvalves, and electrochemical detectors, used in microfluidics. We also introduce representatives of advanced lab-on-a-body microfluidics combined with electrochemical sensors for biomedical applications. The chapter ends with a discussion of the potential trends of research in this field and opportunities. On-body microfluidics as modern total analysis devices will continue to bring several fascinating opportunities to the field of biomedical and translational research applications.

A review on recent advancements in recovery of valuable and toxic metals from e-waste using bioleaching approach

This review is intent on the environmental pollution generated from printed circuit boards and the methods employed to retrieve valuable and hazardous metals present in the e-wastes. Printed circuit boards are the key components in the electronic devices and considered as huge e-pollutants in polluting our surroundings and the environment as a whole. Composing of toxic heavy metals, it causes serious health effects to the plants, animals and humans in the environment. A number of chemical, biological and physical approaches were carried out to recover the precious metals and to remove the hazardous metals from the environment. Chemical leaching is one of the conventional PCBs recycling methods which was carried out by using different organic solvents and chemicals. Need of high cost for execution, generation of secondary wastes in the conventional methods, forces to discover the advanced recycling methods such as hydrometallurgical, bio-metallurgical and bioleaching processes to retrieve the valuable metals generate through e-wastes. Among them, bioleaching process gain extra priority due to its higher efficiency of metal recovery from printed circuit boards. There are different classes of microorganisms have been utilized for precious metal recovery from the PCBs through bioleaching process such as chemolithoautotrophy, heterotrophy and different fungal species including Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp. The current status and scope for further studies in printed circuit boards recycling are discussed in this review.

Recent advancements in the removal/recovery of toxic metals from aquatic system using flotation techniques

The paramount cause of water scarcity is pollution, which is becoming a massive issue since the last century. Besides, it is evident that water pollution is the main cause of emerging contaminants that are left untreated from industries, can cause serious threats to humans and biota as well. One of the best ways in remediating pollutants and finding a way for generating useable water is to use this contaminated water after the necessary treatment. Heavy metals are of major concern in treatment because of their toxicity, non-biodegradability, carcinogenicity, and they can cause inevitable damages even at low concentrations. In this review article, available different flotation techniques are discussed to address this issue. Flotation tends to be one of the promising techniques that have shown a high scope because of its high produce, low sludge formation, and ease of operation. From the several pieces of literature, it can be inferred that the flotation process can be conducted in one step, and that does not need any expensive materials. Further, this paper deliberates the versatility of each process in disclosing its advantages, limitations, further scope of research and fills the loopholes in the process for better effectiveness. Overall, flotation is a highly probable as well as effective treatment technology to eradicate noxious pollutants present in wastewater and thus helps to compromise environmental and social sustainability.

Phycoremediation of wastewater for pollutant removal: A green approach to environmental protection and long-term remediation

Surface and water bodies in many parts of the world are affected due to eutrophication, contamination and depletion. The approach of wastewater treatment using algae for eliminating nutrients and other pollutants from domestic wastewater is growing interest among the researchers. However, sustainable treatment of the wastewater is considered to be important in establishing more effective nutrient and pollutant reduction using algal systems. In comparison to the conventional method of remediation, there are opportunities to commercially viable businesses interest with phycoremediation, thus by achieving cost reductions and renewable bioenergy options. Phycoremediation is an intriguing stage for treating wastewater since it provides tertiary bio-treatment while producing potentially valuable biomass that may be used for a variety of applications. Furthermore, the phycoremediation provides the ability to remove heavy metals as well as harmful organic substances, without producing secondary contamination. In this review, the role of microalgae in treating different wastewaters and the process parameters affecting the treatment and future scope of research have been discussed. Though several algae are employed for wastewater treatment, species of the genera Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, and Scenedesmus are extensively utilized. Interestingly, there is a vast scope for employing algal species with high flocculation capacity and adsorption mechanisms for the elimination of microplastics. In addition, the algal biomass generated during phycoremediation has been found to possess high protein and lipid contents, promising their exploitation in biofuel, food and animal feed industries.

Reliable environmental trace heavy metal analysis with potentiometric ion sensors - reality or a distant dream

Over two decades have passed since polymeric membrane ion-selective electrodes were found to exhibit sufficiently lower detection limits. This in turn brought a great promise to measure trace level concentrations of heavy metals using potentiometric ion sensors at environmental conditions. Despite great efforts, trace analysis of heavy metals using ion-selective electrodes at environmental conditions is still not commercially available. This work will predominantly concentrate on summarizing and evaluating prospects of using potentiometric ion sensors in view of environmental determination of heavy metals in on-site and on-line analysis modes. Challenges associated with development of reliable potentiometric sensors to be operational in environmental conditions will be discussed and reasoning behind unsuccessful efforts to develop potentiometric on-site and on-line environmental ion sensors will be explored. In short, it is now clear that solely lowering the detection limit of the ion-selective electrodes does not guarantee development of successful sensors that would meet the requirement of environmental matrices over long term usage. More pressing challenges of the properties and the performance of the potentiometric sensors must be addressed first before considering extending their sensitivity to low analyte concentrations. These are, in order of importance, selectivity of the ion-selective membrane to main ion followed by the membrane resistance to parallel processes, such as water ingress to the ISM, light sensitivity, change in temperature, presence of gasses in solution and pH and finally resistance of the ion-selective membrane to fouling. In the future, targeted on-site and on-line environmental sensors should be developed, addressing specific environmental conditions. Thus, ion-selective electrodes should be developed with the intention to be suitable to the operational environmental conditions, rather than looking at universal sensor design validated in the idealized and simple sample matrices.

Metagenomic analysis of microbial community and its role in bioelectrokinetic remediation of tannery contaminated soil

Tanneries create a serious threat to the environment by generating a significant amount of toxic metal-containing solid waste. This study deals with the application of bio-electrokinetic remediation (Bio-EK) of tannery effluent contaminated soil (TECS). Metagenomes representing the TECS sample were sequenced using the Illumina HiSeq platform. The bioreduction of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI)to trivalent chromium Cr (III) was achieved by BIO-EK techniques. NGS-data (Next Generation Sequencing) analysis was revealed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Planctomycetes were identified in the bio-electrokinetic system. Proteobacteria are responsible for the bioreduction of chromium hexavalent by the formation of FeS particles. The bio-generated FeS particles can be reduced the toxic chromium (VI) to non-toxic chromium (III) in soil. Simultaneously total chromium and organic content were significantly removed in BIO-EK (40 and 290 mg kg^-1) when compared to control soil (182 and 240 mg kg^-1). The presence of pollutant degrading microbes such as Desulfovibrio, Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Clostridium, Halanaerobium enhanced the bioreduction of the chromium during the electrokinetic remediation. This study can be claimed that the microbial cultures assisted electrokinetic remediation of total chromium, organic and iron in the tannery effluent contaminated soil was one of the suitable efficient techniques. In addition, the viability of the new combination technology developed (Electrokinetic + Bio) to treat low-permeability polluted soils was demonstrated.

Analysis of Temperature-Jump Boundary Conditions on Heat Transfer for Heterogeneous Microfluidic Immunosensors

The objective of the current study is to analyze numerically the effect of the temperature-jump boundary condition on heterogeneous microfluidic immunosensors under electrothermal force. A three-dimensional simulation using the finite element method on the binding reaction kinetics of C-reactive protein (CRP) was performed. The kinetic reaction rate was calculated with coupled Laplace, Navier−Stokes, energy, and mass diffusion equations. Two types of reaction surfaces were studied: one in the form of a disc surrounded by two electrodes and the other in the form of a circular ring, one electrode is located inside the ring and the other outside. The numerical results reveal that the performance of a microfluidic biosensor is enhanced by using the second design of the sensing area (circular ring) coupled with the electrothermal force. The improvement factor under the applied ac field 15 V_rms was about 1.2 for the first geometry and 3.6 for the second geometry. Furthermore, the effect of temperature jump on heat transfer rise and response time was studied. The effect of two crucial parameters, viz. Knudsen number (Kn) and thermal accommodation coefficient (σ_T) with and without electrothermal effect, were analyzed for the two configurations.

Enhancement of Heterogeneous Microfluidic Immunosensors Using New Sensing Area Shape with Electrothermal Effect

In heterogeneous microfluidic immunosensors, the diffusion boundary layer produced on the sensing area represents a critical factor that limits the biosensor performance. A three-dimensional simulation using the finite element method on the binding reaction kinetics of C-reactive protein (CRP) has been performed. We present a new microfluidic biosensor based on a novel reaction-surface design without and with electrothermal force. Two reaction surface configurations were studied. The kinetic reaction rate was calculated with coupled Navier−Stokes, mass diffusion, energy, and Laplace equations. The numerical results reveal that the characteristics of a microfluidic biosensor are more enhanced by using the circular ring design of the sensing area coupled with the electrothermal force. The rate of initial slope related to the association phase is multiplied by a factor 2 when the voltage is increased from 10 to 15 V. The results prove to be valuable in designing new microfluidic biosensors.

Functionalization of ultrasound enhanced sewage sludge-derived biochar: Physicochemical improvement and its effects on soil enzyme activities and heavy metals availability

Poor physicochemical characteristics and high heavy metals content are main limitations of applying sludge-based biochars in remediation studies. The present study attempts to combine two practical approaches of ultrasound pre-treatment with low-time and low-frequency and chemical functionalization using citric acid. The aims of this study are enhancement physicochemical characteristics and environmental applicability of sludge-derived biochar. The characteristics of obtained ultrasound-treated functionalized biochar (UFB), sludge-derived biochar (SDB) and sewage sludge (SS) were evaluated. Then, the effects of these additives on soil heavy metals availability, soil enzyme activities and soil physicochemical characteristics were investigated during a 2-month stabilization process. The results indicated that ultrasound pre-treatment and functionalization considerably increased pore volume, surface area, and surface functional groups of the biochar, but significantly decreased total heavy metals concentration and metals ecological risk index (Er). The results of soil amending showed that application of UFB decreased Pb, Zn and Cd availability in soil by 85.3, 82.9 and 30.6%, respectively. In all cases, except for Cd, the Pb and Zn availability decreased by UFB was two times greater than the availability decreased by SDB and SS. Compared to SDB, the UFB potentially enhanced the positive effect of additive on soil enzyme activities. The obtained results revealed that the feasible, uncomplicated physical and chemical techniques can be used as a valuable approach for enhancing the environmental applicability of sludge-derived biochar and management of the excessively produced sewage sludge in the world.

Simultaneous immobilization of Pb, Cd and As in soil by hybrid iron-, sulfate- and phosphate-based bio-nanocomposite: Effectiveness, long-term stability and bioavailablity/bioaccessibility evaluation

Here, the bio-nanocomposite (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An was developed to simultaneously immobilize Pb, Cd and As in the severely contaminated soil. The immobilization rates of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)/decarbonate-extracted bioavailable Pb, Cd and As were 59.87%, 31.28% and 62.30%, and the immobilization rates of their water-soluble forms were 63.12%, 60.02% and 89.39%, respectively. Moreover, the ten-year acid rain simulated leaching assay showed that the maximum cumulative release contents of Pb, Cd and As in the treated soil samples were decreased by 2.94, 2.46 and 40.60 times, comparing to the un-treated ones. Additionally, the results of SBRC (Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium) revealed that the bioaccessible rates of the three metals in intestinal phase were lower than in gastric phase, and both of them decreased with increasing the immobilization time. The gastric bioaccessibility of Pb, Cd and As had a higher correlation with the contents of water-soluble forms, while the intestinal bioaccessibility was more strongly positively associated with the bioavailable forms.

Metallothionein dependent-detoxification of heavy metals in the agricultural field soil of industrial area: Earthworm as field experimental model system

Earthworms are known to reclaim soil contamination and maintain soil health. In the present study, the concentration of DTPA extractable heavy metals, Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, and Zn in vermicasts and tissues of the earthworms (anecic: Lampito mauritii; epigeic: Drawida sulcata) collected from the soils of four different industrial sites, Site-I (Sago industry), Site-II (Chemplast industry), Site-III (Dairy industry) and Site-IV (Dye industry) have been studied. The heavy metals in industrial soils recorded were 0.01-326.42 mg kg^-1 with higher Cu, Cr, and Zn contents while the vermicasts showed lower heavy metal loads with improved physicochemical properties and elevated humic substances. The higher humic substances dramatically decreased the heavy metals in the soil. The bioaccumulation factors of heavy metals (mg kg^-1) are in the order: Zn (54.50) > Cu (17.43) > Cr (4.54) > Pb (2.24) > Cd (2.12). The greatest amount of metallothionein protein (nmol g^-1) was recorded in earthworms from Site-IV (386.76) followed by Site-III (322.14), Site-II (245.82), and Site-I (232.21). Drawida sulcata can produce a considerable amount of metallothionein protein than Lampito mauritii as the metallothionein production is dependent upon the presence of pollutants. The molecular docking analysis indicates a binding score of 980 for Cd, Cr and Cu, and 372 for Zn. Pb may bind with a non-metallothionein protein of earthworms and bio-accumulated in the internal chloragogenous tissues. Metallothionein neutralizes the metal toxicity and controls the ingestion of essential elements.

Highly reproducible solid contact ion selective electrodes: Emerging opportunities for potentiometry - A review

The solid contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) have been extensively studied in the field of ion sensing as they offer the possibility of miniaturization, are relatively inexpensive in comparison to other analytical techniques and allow straightforward and routine analyses of ions in a number of clinical, environmental and industrial process samples. In recent years, significant interest has grown in the development of SC-ISEs with well-defined interfacialpotentials at the membrane, solid contact, and substrate electrode interfaces. This has resulted in interesting SC-ISEs exhibiting high electrode-to-electrode potential reproducibility, for those made in a single batch of electrodes, some approaching or exceeding those observed in liquid-contact ISEs. The advancement in the potential reproducibility of SC-ISEs has been partially achieved by scrutinizing insufficiently reproducible fabrication methods of SC-ISEs, or by introducing novel control measures or modifiers to components of the ISEs. This paper provides an overview of the methods as well as the challenges in establishing and maintaining reproducible potentials during the fabrication and use of novel SC-ISEs. The rules outlined in the works reviewed may form the basis of further development of cost-effective, user-friendly, limited calibration or calibration-free potentiometric SC-ISEs to achieve reliable ion analyses here and now.

Flow-based System: A Highly Efficient Tool Speeds Up Data Production and Improves Analytical Performance

In this review, we cite references from the period between 2015 and 2020 related to the use of a flow-based system as a tool to obtain a modern analytical system for speeding up data production and improving performance. Based on a great deal of concepts for automatic systems, there are several research groups introduced in the development of flow-based systems to increase sample throughput while retaining the reproducibility and repeatability as well as to propose new platforms of flow-based systems, such as microfluidic chip and paper-based devices. Additionally, to apply a developed system for on-site analysis is one of the key features for development. We believe that this review will be very interested and useful for readers because of its impact on developing novel analytical systems. The content of the review is categorized following their applications including quality control and food safety, clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring and miscellaneous.

Electrochemically triggered sensing and recovery of mercury over sodium alginate grafted polyaniline

An efficient potential triggering process has been established over chemically functionalized SA-g-PANI under optimum conditions to enable the sensing and extraction of residual mercury ions present in wastewater and soil samples.

Potentiometric extractive sensing of lead ions over a nickel oxide intercalated chitosan-grafted-polyaniline composite

The present research paper reports the extractive potentiometric sensing of lead ions over a chemically functionalized ternary nanocomposite of nickel oxide intercalated chitosan grafted polyaniline (NiO-in-CHIT-g-PANI) prepared by the in situ chemical polymerization and composite formation technique under optimized conditions. The structural, morphological, and physical properties of the composite material were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other suitable ASTM methods. The obtained analytical result suggests the formation of a porous hybrid composite matrix with better electrical conductivity ∼ 5.25 × 10^-3 S cm^-1, free interactive carbonyl sites, and evolved aligned crystallinity. Furthermore, a film of the synthesized composite was cast on ITO coated glass by the spin coating technique for potentiometric sensing and the recovery of adsorbed Pb²⁺ ions from natural and artificial water solutions. Under optimum conditions of ∼pH = 7.0 and a temperature of 25 °C, the electrode exhibited potential responses for Pb²⁺ ions in concentrations ranging from 1.0 × 10^-6 M to 1 × 10^-3 M along with a sensitivity of 0.2379 mV μM^-1 cm^-2, response time of 40 s, recovery time of 10 s, and stability for 64 days. The adsorbed Pb²⁺ ions were recovered at a rate of 84% after applying an optimized reverse voltage on the above-used electrodes. The adsorption and desorption mechanism has been explained based on the induced potential due to the electrochemical surface interaction between Pb²⁺ and the NiO-in-CHIT-g-PANI based electrode. The analytical application of the fabricated electrode in the real sample was also explored for the sensing and recovery of the respective metal ions in wastewater samples along with the possibility of optimization of the required metal concentrations.

Electrochemical multi-analyte point-of-care perspiration sensors using on-chip three-dimensional graphene electrodes

Multi-analyte sensing using exclusively laser-induced graphene (LIG)-based planar electrode systems was developed for sweat analysis. LIG provides 3D structures of graphene, can be manufactured easier than any other carbon electrode also on large scale, and in form of electrodes: hence, it is predestinated for affordable, wearable point-of-care sensors. Here, it is demonstrated that LIG facilitates all three electrochemical sensing strategies (voltammetry, potentiometry, impedance) in a multi-analyte system for sweat analysis. A potentiometric potassium-ion-selective electrode in combination with an electrodeposited Ag/AgCl reference electrode (RE) enabled the detection of potassium ions in the entire physiologically relevant range (1 to 500 mM) with a fast response time, unaffected by the presence of main interfering ions and sweat-collecting materials. A kidney-shaped interdigitated LIG electrode enabled the determination of the overall electrolyte concentration by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at a fixed frequency. Enzyme-based strategies with amperometric detection share a common RE and were realized with Prussian blue as electron mediator and biocompatible chitosan for enzyme immobilization and protection of the electrode. Using glucose and lactate oxidases, lower limits of detection of 13.7 ± 0.5 μM for glucose and 28 ± 3 μM for lactate were obtained, respectively. The sensor showed a good performance at different pH, with sweat-collecting tissues, on a model skin system and furthermore in synthetic sweat as well as in artificial tear fluid. Response time for each analytical cycle totals 75 s, and hence allows a quasi-continuous and simultaneous monitoring of all analytes. This multi-analyte all-LIG system is therefore a practical, versatile, and most simple strategy for point-of-care applications and has the potential to outcompete standard screen-printed electrodes.

Integrated Electrochemical Biosensors for Detection of Waterborne Pathogens in Low-Resource Settings

More than 783 million people worldwide are currently without access to clean and safe water. Approximately 1 in 5 cases of mortality due to waterborne diseases involve children, and over 1.5 million cases of waterborne disease occur every year. In the developing world, this makes waterborne diseases the second highest cause of mortality. Such cases of waterborne disease are thought to be caused by poor sanitation, water infrastructure, public knowledge, and lack of suitable water monitoring systems. Conventional laboratory-based techniques are inadequate for effective on-site water quality monitoring purposes. This is due to their need for excessive equipment, operational complexity, lack of affordability, and long sample collection to data analysis times. In this review, we discuss the conventional techniques used in modern-day water quality testing. We discuss the future challenges of water quality testing in the developing world and how conventional techniques fall short of these challenges. Finally, we discuss the development of electrochemical biosensors and current research on the integration of these devices with microfluidic components to develop truly integrated, portable, simple to use and cost-effective devices for use by local environmental agencies, NGOs, and local communities in low-resource settings.
