Abstract
The study examines the impact of microstructure and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) grafting on the degradability of Zn-Mg alloys. The mechanical properties of a Zn alloy containing 0.68 wt% Mg and extruded at 200 °C are enhanced for degradable load-bearing applications, addressing a crucial need in the field. The material exhibits a bimodal grain size distribution that is random texture, consisting of secondary phases, grains, and sub-grains. With an elongation to failure of 16 %, the yield and ultimate tensile strengths are 325.9 and 414.5 MPa, respectively, and the compressive yield strength is 450.5 MPa. The "grafting-from" method was used to coat a few micrometers thick of PMMA on both bulk and scaffold Zn alloys to mitigate the corrosion rate. The last one is a porous structure, with a porosity of 65.8 %, considered as in the first approach of an orthopedic implant. After being immersed for 720 h, the PMMA-grafted bulk alloy's corrosion rate decreased from 0.43 to 0.25 mm/y. Similarly, the scaffold alloy's corrosion rate reduced from 1.24 to 0.49 mm/y. These results indicate that the method employed could be used for future orthopedic applications.

Abstract
Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable zinc (Zn) alloys have recently emerged as promising porous bone-substituting materials, due to their moderate degradation rates, good biocompatibility, geometrically ordered microarchitectures, and bone-mimicking mechanical properties. While AM Zn alloy porous scaffolds mimicking the mechanical properties of trabecular bone have been previously reported, mimicking the mechanical properties of cortical bone remains a formidable challenge. To overcome this challenge, we developed the AM Zn-3Mg alloy. We used laser powder bed fusion to process Zn-3Mg and compared it with pure Zn. The AM Zn-3Mg alloy exhibited significantly refined grains and a unique microstructure with interlaced α-Zn/Mg2Zn11 phases. The compressive properties of the solid Zn-3Mg specimens greatly exceeded their tensile properties, with a compressive yield strength of up to 601 MPa and an ultimate strain of >60 %. We then designed and fabricated functionally graded porous structures with a solid core and achieved cortical bone-mimicking mechanical properties, including a compressive yield strength of >120 MPa and an elastic modulus of ≈20 GPa. The biodegradation rates of the Zn-3Mg specimens were lower than those of pure Zn and could be adjusted by tuning the AM process parameters. The Zn-3Mg specimens also exhibited improved biocompatibility as compared to pure Zn, including higher metabolic activity and enhanced osteogenic behavior of MC3T3 cells cultured with the extracts from the Zn-3Mg alloy specimens. Altogether, these results marked major progress in developing AM porous biodegradable metallic bone substitutes, which paved the way toward clinical adoption of Zn-based scaffolds for the treatment of load-bearing bony defects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Our study presents a significant advancement in the realm of biodegradable metallic bone substitutes through the development of an additively manufactured Zn-3Mg alloy. This novel alloy showcases refined grains and a distinctive microstructure, enabling the fabrication of functionally graded porous structures with mechanical properties resembling cortical bone. The achieved compressive yield strength and elastic modulus signify a critical leap toward mimicking the mechanical behavior of load-bearing bone. Moreover, our findings reveal tunable biodegradation rates and enhanced biocompatibility compared to pure Zn, emphasizing the potential clinical utility of Zn-based scaffolds for treating load-bearing bony defects. This breakthrough opens doors for the wider adoption of zinc-based materials in regenerative orthopedics.

Abstract
Continuous industrialization and other human activities have led to severe water quality deterioration by harmful pollutants. Achieving robust and high-throughput water purification is challenging due to the coupling between mechanical strength, mass transportation and catalytic efficiency. Here, a structure-function integrated system is developed by Douglas fir wood-inspired metamaterial catalysts featuring overlapping microlattices with bimodal pores to decouple the mechanical, transport and catalytic performances. The metamaterial catalyst is prepared by metal 3D printing (316 L stainless steel, mainly Fe) and electrochemically decorated with Co to further boost catalytic functionality. Combining the flexibility of 3D printing and theoretical simulation, the metamaterial catalyst demonstrates a wide range of mechanical-transport-catalysis capabilities while a 70% overlap rate has 3X more strength and surface area per unit volume, and 4X normalized reaction kinetics than those of traditional microlattices. This work demonstrates the rational and harmonious integration of structural and functional design in robust and high throughput water purification, and can inspire the development of various flow catalysts, flow batteries, and functional 3D-printed materials.

Abstract
Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMSs) have demonstrated significant potential in lattice structure design and have been successfully applied across multiple industrial fields. In this work, a novel lattice structure with tunable anisotropic properties is proposed based on two typical TPMS types, and their mechanical performances are studied both experimentally and numerically after being fabricated using a polymer 3D printing process. Initially, adjustments are made to the original TPMS lattice structures to obtain honeycomb lattice structures, which are found to possess significant anisotropy, by utilizing numerical homogenization methods. Based on this, a continuous self-twisting deformation is proposed to change the topology of the honeycomb lattice structures to largely tune the mechanical properties. Quasi-static compression experiments are conducted with different twisting angles, and the results indicate that self-twisting can affect the mechanical properties in specific directions of the structure, and also enhance the energy absorption capacity. Additionally, it mitigates the risk of structural collapse and failure during compression while diminishing structural anisotropy. The proposed self-twisting strategy, based on honeycomb lattice structures, has been proven valuable in advancing the investigation of lattice structures with largely tunable mechanical properties.

Abstract
The combination of bioactive Zn-2Mg alloy and additively manufactured porous scaffold is expected to achieve customizable biodegradable performance and enhanced bone regeneration. Herein, Zn-2Mg alloy scaffolds with different porosities, including 40% (G-40-2), 60% (G-60-2), and 80% (G-80-2), and different unit sizes, including 1.5 mm (G-60-1.5), 2 mm (G-60-2), and 2.5 mm (G-60-2.5), are manufactured by a triply periodic minimal surface design and a reliable laser powder bed fusion process. With the same unit size, compressive strength (CS) and elastic modulus (EM) of scaffolds substantially decrease with increasing porosities. With the same porosity, CS and EM just slightly decrease with increasing unit sizes. The weight loss after degradation increases with increasing porosities and decreasing unit sizes. In vivo tests indicate that Zn-2Mg alloy scaffolds exhibit satisfactory biocompatibility and osteogenic ability. The osteogenic ability of scaffolds is mainly determined by their physical and chemical characteristics. Scaffolds with lower porosities and smaller unit sizes show better osteogenesis due to their suitable pore size and larger surface area. The results indicate that the biodegradable performance of scaffolds can be accurately regulated on a large scale by structure design and the additively manufactured Zn-2Mg alloy scaffolds have improved osteogenic ability for treating bone defects.

Abstract
Scaffolds are an essential component in bone tissue engineering (BTE). However, most of the current BTE scaffolds are homogeneous structures and do not resemble the graded architectures of native bone. In the current study, four types of biomimicking scaffold designs based on gyroid (G) and primitive (P) units with radially graded pore sizes were devised, and scaffolds of these designs with two porosity groups (65 vol% and 75 vol%) were fabricated via digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing using biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP). Scaffolds of the gyroid-gyroid (G-G) design displayed better dimensional accuracy, compressive property, and cell proliferation rate than gyroid-primitive (G-P), primitive-gyroid (P-G), and primitive-primitive (P-P) scaffolds. Subsequently, graded G-G scaffolds with different porosities were fabricated and the relationship between compressive strength and porosity was determined. Furthermore, the sintered BCP bioceramics fabricated via current manufacturing process exhibited excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity, indicating their high potential for BTE.

Abstract
Additively manufactured (AM) degradable porous metallic biomaterials offer unique opportunities for satisfying the design requirements of an ideal bone substitute. Among the currently available biodegradable metals, iron has the highest elastic modulus, meaning that it would benefit the most from porous design. Given the successful preclinical applications of such biomaterials for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, the moderate compatibility of AM porous iron with osteoblast-like cells, reported in earlier studies, has been surprising. This may be because, as opposed to static in vitro conditions, the biodegradation products of iron in vivo are transported away and excreted. To better mimic the in situ situations of biodegradable biomaterials after implantation, we compared the biodegradation behavior and cytocompatibility of AM porous iron under static conditions to the conditions with dynamic in situ-like fluid flow perfusion in a bioreactor. Furthermore, the compatibility of these scaffolds with four different cell types was evaluated to better understand the implications of these implants for the complex process of natural wound healing. These included endothelial cells, L929 fibroblasts, RAW264.7 macrophage-like cells, and osteoblastic MG-63 cells. The biodegradation rate of the scaffolds was significantly increased in the perfusion bioreactor as compared to static immersion. Under either condition, the compatibility with L929 cells was the best. Moreover, the compatibility with all the cell types was much enhanced under physiomimetic dynamic flow conditions as compared to static biodegradation. Our study highlights the importance of physiomimetic culture conditions and cell type selection when evaluating the cytocompatibility of degradable biomaterials in vitro. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additively manufactured (AM) degradable porous metals offer unique opportunities for the treatment of large bony defects. Despite the successful preclinical applications of biodegradable iron in the cardiovascular field, the moderate compatibility of AM porous iron with osteoblast-like cells was reported. To better mimic the in vivo condition, we compared the biodegradation behavior and cytocompatibility of AM porous iron under static condition to dynamic perfusion. Furthermore, the compatibility of these scaffolds with various cell types was evaluated to better simulate the process of natural wound healing. Our study suggests that AM porous iron holds great promise for orthopedic applications, while also highlighting the importance of physio-mimetic culture conditions and cell type selection when evaluating the cytocompatibility of degradable biomaterials in vitro.

Abstract
With the ability to produce components with complex and precise structures, additive manufacturing or 3D printing techniques are now widely applied in both industry and consumer markets. The emergence of tissue engineering has facilitated the application of 3D printing in the field of biomedical implants. 3D printed implants with proper structural design can not only eliminate the stress shielding effect but also improve in vivo biocompatibility and functionality. By combining medical images derived from technologies such as X-ray scanning, CT, MRI, or ultrasonic scanning, 3D printing can be used to create patient-specific implants with almost the same anatomical structures as the injured tissues. Numerous clinical trials have already been conducted with customized implants. However, the limited availability of raw materials for printing and a lack of guidance from related regulations or laws may impede the development of 3D printing in medical implants. This review provides information on the current state of 3D printing techniques in orthopedic implant applications. The current challenges and future perspectives are also included.

Abstract
With the advancement of additive manufacturing (AM), customized vascular stents can now be fabricated to fit the curvatures and sizes of a narrowed or blocked blood vessel, thereby reducing the possibility of thrombosis and restenosis. More importantly, AM enables the design and fabrication of complex and functional stent unit cells that would otherwise be impossible to realize with conventional manufacturing techniques. Additionally, AM makes fast design iterations possible while also shortening the development time of vascular stents. This has led to the emergence of a new treatment paradigm in which custom and on-demand-fabricated stents will be used for just-in-time treatments. This review is focused on the recent advances in AM vascular stents aimed at meeting the mechanical and biological requirements. First, the biomaterials suitable for AM vascular stents are listed and briefly described. Second, we review the AM technologies that have been so far used to fabricate vascular stents as well as the performances they have achieved. Subsequently, the design criteria for the clinical application of AM vascular stents are discussed considering the currently encountered limitations in materials and AM techniques. Finally, the remaining challenges are highlighted and some future research directions are proposed to realize clinically-viable AM vascular stents. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Vascular stents have been widely used for the treatment of vascular disease. The recent progress in additive manufacturing (AM) has provided unprecedented opportunities for revolutionizing traditional vascular stents. In this manuscript, we review the applications of AM to the design and fabrication of vascular stents. This is an interdisciplinary subject area that has not been previously covered in the published review articles. Our objective is to not only present the state-of-the-art of AM biomaterials and technologies but to also critically assess the limitations and challenges that need to be overcome to speed up the clinical adoption of AM vascular stents with both anatomical superiority and mechanical and biological functionalities that exceed those of the currently available mass-produced devices.

Abstract
Bioactive glass (BG) and its polymer composites have demonstrated great potential as scaffolds for bone defect healing. Nonetheless, processing these materials into complex geometry to achieve either anatomy-fitting designs or the desired degradation behavior remains challenging. Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of BG and BG/polymer objects with well-defined shapes and intricate porous structures. This work reviewed the recent advancements made in the AM of BG and BG/polymer composite scaffolds intended for bone tissue engineering. A literature search was performed using the Scopus database to include publications relevant to this topic. The properties of BG based on different inorganic glass formers, as well as BG/polymer composites, are first introduced. Melt extrusion, direct ink writing, powder bed fusion, and vat photopolymerization are AM technologies that are compatible with BG or BG/polymer processing and were reviewed in terms of their recent advances. The value of AM in the fabrication of BG or BG/polymer composites lies in its ability to produce scaffolds with patient-specific designs and the on-demand spatial distribution of biomaterials, both contributing to effective bone defect healing, as demonstrated by in vivo studies. Based on the relationships among structure, physiochemical properties, and biological function, AM-fabricated BG or BG/polymer composite scaffolds are valuable for achieving safer and more efficient bone defect healing in the future.

Abstract
The development of biodegradable Fe-based bone implants has rapidly progressed in recent years. Most of the challenges encountered in developing such implants have been tackled individually or in combination using additive manufacturing technologies. Yet not all the challenges have been overcome. Herein, we present porous FeMn-akermanite composite scaffolds fabricated by extrusion-based 3D printing to address the unmet clinical needs associated with Fe-based biomaterials for bone regeneration, including low biodegradation rate, MRI-incompatibility, mechanical properties, and limited bioactivity. In this research, we developed inks containing Fe, 35 wt% Mn, and 20 or 30 vol% akermanite powder mixtures. 3D printing was optimized together with the debinding and sintering steps to obtain scaffolds with interconnected porosity of 69%. The Fe-matrix in the composites contained the γ-FeMn phase as well as nesosilicate phases. The former made the composites paramagnetic and, thus, MRI-friendly. The in vitro biodegradation rates of the composites with 20 and 30 vol% akermanite were respectively 0.24 and 0.27 mm/y, falling within the ideal range of biodegradation rates for bone substitution. The yield strengths of the porous composites stayed within the range of the values of the trabecular bone, despite in vitro biodegradation for 28 d. All the composite scaffolds favored the adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of preosteoblasts, as revealed by Runx2 assay. Moreover, osteopontin was detected in the extracellular matrix of cells on the scaffolds. Altogether, these results demonstrate the remarkable potential of these composites in fulfilling the requirements of porous biodegradable bone substitutes, motivating future in vivo research. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: We developed FeMn-akermanite composite scaffolds by taking advantage of the multi-material capacity of extrusion-based 3D printing. Our results demonstrated that the FeMn-akermanite scaffolds showed an exceptional performance in fulfilling all the requirements for bone substitution in vitro, i.e., a sufficient biodegradation rate, having mechanical properties in the range of trabecular bone even after 4 weeks biodegradation, paramagnetic, cytocompatible and most importantly osteogenic. Our results encourage further research on Fe-based bone implants in in vivo.

Abstract
Development of an ideal biomaterial for clinical use is one of the main objectives of current research in tissue engineering. Marine-origin polysaccharides, in particular agaroses, have been widely explored as scaffolds for tissue engineering. We previously developed a biomaterial based on a combination of agarose with fibrin, that was successfully translated to clinical practice. However, in search of novel biomaterials with improved physical and biological properties, we have now generated new fibrin-agarose (FA) biomaterials using 5 different types of agaroses at 4 different concentrations. First, we evaluated the cytotoxic effects and the biomechanical properties of these biomaterials. Then, each bioartificial tissue was grafted in vivo and histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses were performed after 30 days. Ex vivo evaluation showed high biocompatibility and differences in their biomechanical properties. In vivo, FA tissues were biocompatible at the systemic and local levels, and histological analyses showed that biointegration was associated to a pro-regenerative process with M2-type CD206-positive macrophages. These results confirm the biocompatibility of FA biomaterials and support their clinical use for the generation of human tissues by tissue engineering, with the possibility of selecting specific agarose types and concentrations for applications requiring precise biomechanical properties and in vivo reabsorption times.

Abstract
Treating bone defects is highly challenging because they do not heal on their own inside the patients, so implants are needed to assist in the reconstruction of the bone. Bioceramic implants based on additive manufacturing (AM) are currently emerging as promising treatment options for restoration bone engineering. On the one hand, additively manufactured bioceramic implants have excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility, which are suitable for bone regeneration. On the other hand, the designable structure and adjustable pores of additively manufactured bioceramic implants allow them to promote suitable cell growth and tissue climbing. Herein, this review unfolds to introduce several frequently employed AM technologies for bioceramic implants. After that, advances in commonly used additively manufactured bioceramic implants, including bioinert ceramic implants, bioactive ceramic implants, and bioceramic/organic composite implants, are categorized and summarized. Finally, the future perspectives of additively manufactured bioceramic implants, in terms of mechanical performance improvement, innovative structural design, biological property enhancement, and other functionalization approaches, are proposed and forecasted. This review is believed to provide some fundamental understanding and cutting-edge knowledge for the additive manufacturing of bioceramic implants for restoration bone engineering.

Abstract
Implant surgery is followed by a series of inflammatory reactions that directly affect its postoperative results. The inflammasome plays a vital role in the inflammatory response by inducing pyroptosis and producing interleukin-1β, which plays a critical role in inflammation and tissue damage. Therefore, it is essential to study the activation of the inflammasome in the bone healing process after implant surgery. As metals are the primary implant materials, metal-induced local inflammatory reactions have received significant attention, and there has been more and more research on the activation of the NLRP3 (NOD-like receptor protein-3) inflammasome caused by these metals. In this review, we consolidate the basic knowledge on the NLRP3 inflammasome structures, the present knowledge on the mechanisms of NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and the studies of metal-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Abstract
Bioengineered porous bone tissue materials based on additive manufacturing technology have gradually become a research hotspot in bone tissue-related bioengineering. Research on structural design, preparation and processing processes, and performance optimization has been carried out for this material, and further industrial translation and clinical applications have been implemented. However, based on previous studies, there is controversy in the academic community about characterizing the pore structure dimensions of porous materials, with problems in the definition logic and measurement method for specific parameters. In addition, there are significant differences in the specific morphological and functional concepts for the pore structure due to differences in defining the dimensional characterization parameters of the pore structure, leading to some conflicts in perceptions and discussions among researchers. To further clarify the definitions, measurements, and dimensional parameters of porous structures in bioengineered bone materials, this literature review analyzes different dimensional characterization parameters of pore structures of porous materials to provide a theoretical basis for unified definitions and the standardized use of parameters.

Abstract
The successful application of magnesium (Mg) alloys as biodegradable bone substitutes for critical-sized defects may be comprised by their high degradation rate resulting in a loss of mechanical integrity. This study investigates the degradation pattern of an open-porous fluoride-coated Mg-based scaffold immersed in circulating Hanks' Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) with and without in situ cyclic compression (30 N/1 Hz). The changes in morphological and mechanical properties have been studied by combining in situ high-resolution X-ray computed tomography mechanics and digital volume correlation. Although in situ cyclic compression induced acceleration of the corrosion rate, probably due to local disruption of the coating layer where fatigue microcracks were formed, no critical failures in the overall scaffold were observed, indicating that the mechanical integrity of the Mg scaffolds was preserved. Structural changes, due to the accumulation of corrosion debris between the scaffold fibres, resulted in a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the material volume fraction from 0.52 ± 0.07 to 0.47 ± 0.03 after 14 days of corrosion. However, despite an increase in fibre material loss, the accumulated corrosion products appear to have led to an increase in Young's modulus after 14 days as well as lower third principal strain (εp3) accumulation (−91000 ± 6361 με and −60093 ± 2414 με after 2 and 14 days, respectively). Therefore, this innovative Mg scaffold design and composition provide a bone replacement, capable of sustaining mechanical loads in situ during the postoperative phase allowing new bone formation to be initially supported as the scaffold resorbs. First report on in vitro cyclic loading of MgF2 coated open-porous Mg scaffolds in HBSS simulating 2–3 months in humans. Fluoride-coating slows down corrosion under cyclic loading in vitro. Entangled scaffold structure accumulates local corrosion debris which keeps the mechanical integrity over 14 days in vitro.

Abstract
Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is an emerging technique for the fabrication of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures in metals. In this work, different TPMS structures such as Diamond, Gyroid, Primitive, Neovius, and Fisher-Koch S with graded relative densities are fabricated from 316L steel using LPBF. The graded TPMS samples are subjected to sandblasting to improve the surface finish before mechanical testing. Quasi-static compression tests are performed to study the deformation behavior and energy absorption capacity of TPMS structures. The results reveal superior stiffness and energy absorption capabilities for the graded TPMS samples compared to the uniform TPMS structures. The Fisher-Koch S and Primitive samples show higher strength whereas the Fisher-Koch S and Neovius samples exhibit higher elastic modulus. The Neovius type structure shows the highest energy absorption up to 50% strain among all the TPMS structures. The Gibson-Ashby coefficients are calculated for the TPMS structures, and it is found that the C2 values are in the range suggested by Gibson and Ashby while C1 values differ from the proposed range.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM, also known as 3D printing) is an advanced manufacturing technique that has enabled progress in the design and fabrication of customised or patient-specific (meta-)biomaterials and biomedical devices (e.g., implants, prosthetics, and orthotics) with complex internal microstructures and tuneable properties. In the past few decades, several design guidelines have been proposed for creating porous lattice structures, particularly for biomedical applications. Meanwhile, the capabilities of AM to fabricate a wide range of biomaterials, including metals and their alloys, polymers, and ceramics, have been exploited, offering unprecedented benefits to medical professionals and patients alike. In this review article, we provide an overview of the design principles that have been developed and used for the AM of biomaterials as well as those dealing with three major categories of biomaterials, i.e., metals (and their alloys), polymers, and ceramics. The design strategies can be categorised as: library-based design, topology optimisation, bio-inspired design, and meta-biomaterials. Recent developments related to the biomedical applications and fabrication methods of AM aimed at enhancing the quality of final 3D-printed biomaterials and improving their physical, mechanical, and biological characteristics are also highlighted. Finally, examples of 3D-printed biomaterials with tuned properties and functionalities are presented.

Abstract
Biomimetic metallic biomaterials prepared for bone scaffolds have drawn more and more attention in recent years. However, the topological design of scaffolds is critical to cater to multi-physical requirements for efficient cell seeding and bone regeneration, yet remains a big scientific challenge owing to the coupling of mechanical and mass-transport properties in conventional scaffolds that lead to poor control towards favorable modulus and permeability combinations. Herein, inspired by the microstructure of natural sea urchin spines, biomimetic scaffolds constructed by pentamode metamaterials (PMs) with hierarchical structural tunability were additively manufactured via selective laser melting. The mechanical and mass-transport properties of scaffolds could be simultaneously tuned by the graded porosity (B/T ratio) and the tapering level (D/d ratio). Compared with traditional metallic biomaterials, our biomimetic PM scaffolds possess graded pore distribution, suitable strength, and significant improvements to cell seeding efficiency, permeability, and impact-tolerant capacity, and they also promote in vivo osteogenesis, indicating promising application for cell proliferation and bone regeneration using a structural innovation.

Abstract
Advanced additive manufacturing techniques have been recently used to tackle the two fundamental challenges of biodegradable Fe-based bone-substituting materials, namely low rate of biodegradation and insufficient bioactivity. While additively manufactured porous iron has been somewhat successful in addressing the first challenge, the limited bioactivity of these biomaterials hinder their progress towards clinical application. Herein, we used extrusion-based 3D printing for additive manufacturing of iron-matrix composites containing silicate-based bioceramic particles (akermanite), thereby addressing both of the abovementioned challenges. We developed inks that carried iron and 5, 10, 15, or 20 vol% of akermanite powder mixtures for the 3D printing process and optimized the debinding and sintering steps to produce geometrically-ordered iron-akermanite composites with an open porosity of 69-71%. The composite scaffolds preserved the designed geometry and the original α-Fe and akermanite phases. The in vitro biodegradation rates of the composites were improved as much as 2.6 times the biodegradation rate of geometrically identical pure iron. The yield strengths and elastic moduli of the scaffolds remained within the range of the mechanical properties of the cancellous bone, even after 28 days of biodegradation. The composite scaffolds (10-20 vol% akermanite) demonstrated improved MC3T3-E1 cell adhesion and higher levels of cell proliferation. The cellular secretion of collagen type-1 and the alkaline phosphatase activity on the composite scaffolds (10-20 vol% akermanite) were, respectively higher than and comparable to Ti6Al4V in osteogenic medium. Taken together, these results clearly show the potential of 3D printed porous iron-akermanite composites for further development as promising bone substitutes. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : Porous iron matrix composites containing akermanite particles were produced by means of multi-material additive manufacturing to address the two fundamental challenges associated with biodegradable iron-based biomaterials, namely very low rate of biodegradation and insufficient bioactivity. Our porous iron-akermanite composites exhibited enhanced biodegradability and superior bioactivity compared to porous monolithic iron scaffolds. The murine bone cells proliferated on the composite scaffolds, and secreted the collagen type-1 matrix that stimulated bony-like mineralization. The results show the exceptional potential of the developed porous iron-based composite scaffolds for application as bone substitutes.

Abstract
Biodegradable metals have gained vast attention as befitting candidates for developing degradable metallic implants. Such implants are primarily employed for temporary applications and are expected to degrade or resorbed after the tissue is healed. Fe-based materials have generated considerable interest as one of the possible biodegradable metals. Like other biometals such as Mg and Zn, Fe exhibits good biocompatibility and biodegradability. The versatility in the mechanical behaviour of Fe-based materials makes them a better choice for load-bearing applications. However, the very low degradation rate of Fe in the physiological environment needs to be improved to make it compatible with tissue growth. Several studies on tailoring the degradation behaviour of Fe in the human body are already reported. Majority of these works include studies on the effect of manufacturing and processing techniques on biocompatibility and biodegradability. This article focuses on a comprehensive review and analysis of the various manufacturing and processing techniques so far reported for developing biodegradable iron-based orthopaedic implants. The current status of research in the field is neatly presented, and a summary of the works is included in the article for the benefit of researchers in the field to contextualise their research and effectively find the lacunae in the existing scholarship.

Abstract
Biodegradable metals have been extensively studied due to their potential use as temporary biomedical devices, on non-load bearing applications. These types of implants are requested to function for the healing period, and should degrade after the tissue heals. A balance between mechanical properties requested at the initial stage of implantation and the degradation rate is required. The use of temporary biodegradable implants avoids a second surgery for the removal of the device, which brings high benefits to the patients and avoids high societal costs. Among the biodegradable metals, iron as a biodegradable metal has increased attention over the last few years, especially with the incorporation of additive manufacturing processes to obtain tailored geometries of porous structures, which give rise to higher corrosion rates. Withal by mimic natural bone hierarchical porosity, the mechanical properties of obtained structures tend to equalize that of human bone. This review article presents some of the most important works in the field of iron and porous iron. Fabrication techniques for porous iron are tackled, including conventional and new methods highlighting the unparalleled opportunities given by additive manufacturing. A comparison among the several methods is taken. The effects of the design and the alloying elements on the mechanical properties are also revised. Iron alloys with antibacterial properties are analyzed, as well as the biodegradation behavior and biocompatibility of iron. Although is necessary for further in vivo research, iron is presenting satisfactory results for upcoming biomedical applications, as orthopaedic temporary scaffolds and coronary stents.

Abstract
In the repair of alveolar bone defect, the microstructure of bone graft scaffolds is pivotal for their biological and biomechanical properties. However, it is currently controversial whether gradient structures perform better in biology and biomechanics than homogeneous structures when considering microstructural design. In this research, bioactive ceramic scaffolds with different porous gradient structures were designed and fabricated by 3D printing technology. Compression test, finite element analysis (FEA) revealed statistically significant differences in the biomechanical properties of three types of scaffolds. The mechanical properties of scaffolds approached the natural cancellous bone, and scaffolds with pore size decreased from the center to the perimeter (GII) had superior mechanical properties among the three groups. While in the simulation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), scaffolds with pore size increased from the center to the perimeter (GI) possessed the best permeability and largest flow velocity. Scaffolds were cultured in vitro with rBMSC or implanted in vivo for 4 or 8 weeks. Porous ceramics showed excellent biocompatibility. Results of in vivo were analysed by using micro-CT, concentric rings and VG staining. The GI was superior to the other groups with respect to osteogenicity. The Un (uniformed pore size) was slightly inferior to the GII. The concentric rings analysis demonstrated that the new bone in the GI was distributed in the periphery of defect area, whereas the GII was distributed in the center region. This study offers basic strategies and concepts for future design and development of scaffolds for the clinical restoration of alveolar bone defect.

Abstract
With the ability to fabricate complex structures while meeting individual needs, additive manufacturing (AM) offers unprecedented opportunities for bone tissue engineering in the biomedical field. However, traditional metal implants have many adverse effects due to their poor integration with host tissues, and therefore new material implants with porous structures are gradually being developed that are suitable for clinical medical applications. From the perspectives of additive manufacturing technology and materials, this article discusses a suitable manufacturing process for ideal materials for biological bone tissue engineering. It begins with a review of the methods and applicable materials in existing additive manufacturing technologies and their applications in biomedicine, introducing the advantages and disadvantages of various AM technologies. The properties of materials including metals and polymers, commonly used AM technologies, recent developments, and their applications in bone tissue engineering are discussed in detail and summarized. In addition, the main challenges for different metallic and polymer materials, such as biodegradability, anisotropy, growth factors to promote the osteogenic capacity, and enhancement of mechanical properties are also introduced. Finally, the development prospects for AM technologies and biomaterials in bone tissue engineering are considered.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) has recently been identified as an auspicious biodegradable metal for medical implants and devices due to its tunable mechanical properties and good biocompatibility. However, the slow corrosion rate of Zn in a physiological environment does not meet the requirements for biodegradable implants, hindering its clinical translation. The present study aimed to accelerate the corrosion rate of pure Zn by utilizing acid etching to roughen the surface and increase the substrate surface area. The effects of acid etching on surface morphology, surface roughness, tensile properties, hardness, electrochemical corrosion and degradation behavior, cytocompatibility, direct cell attachment, and biofilm formation were investigated. Interestingly, acid-treated Zn showed an exceptionally high rate of corrosion (∼226-125 μm/year) compared to untreated Zn (∼62 μm/year), attributed to the increased surface roughness (Ra ∼ 1.12 μm) of acid-etched samples. Immersion tests in Hank's solution revealed that acid etching accelerated the degradation rate of Zn samples. In vitro, MC3T3-E1 cell lines in 50 and 25% conditioned media extracts of treated samples showed good cytocompatibility. Reduced bacterial adhesion, biofilm formation, and dispersion were observed for Staphylococci aureus biofilms cultured on acid-etched pure Zn substrates. These results suggest that the surface modification of biodegradable pure Zn metals by acid etching markedly increases the translation potential of zinc for various biomedical applications.

Abstract
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are emerging materials systems, with structures and compositions gradually changing in a particular direction. Consequently, the properties of the materials gradually change in the desired direction to achieve particular nonhomogeneous service demands without abrupting the compositional and behavioral interface at the macroscale. FGMs have been found to have high potential as orthopedic implants; because the functional gradient can be adapted in such a manner that the core of FGM should be compatible with the density and strength of bone, interlayers can maintain the structural integrity and outermost layers would provide bioactivity and corrosion resistance, thus overall tailoring the stress shielding effect. This review article discusses the typical FGM systems existing in nature and the human body, focusing on bone tissue. Further, the reason behind the application of these FGMs systems in orthopedic implants is explored in detail, considering the physical and biological necessities. The substantial focus of the present critical review is devoted to two primary topics related to the usage of FGMs for orthopedic implants: (1) the synthesizing techniques currently available to produce FGMs for load-bearing orthopedic applications and (2) the properties, such as mechanical, structural, and biological behavior of the FGMs. This review article gives an insight into the potential of FGMs for orthopedic applications.

Abstract
Polymer-coated metals may act as biodegradable orthopedic implants with adjustable corrosion rates. Metallic surfaces represent a dynamic system with specific interactions occurring after the material is implanted into the human body. An additional layer, in the form of polymeric thin film, changes the nature of this metal-body fluids interface. Moreover, the interaction between polymer and metal itself can differ for various systems. Iron-based material modified with a thin layer of polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating was prepared and studied as potential absorbable implant. Computational methods were employed to study the interaction between the metallic surface and polymer functional monomer units at atomic levels. Various spectroscopical and optical methods (SEM, AFM, Confocal, and Raman spectroscopy) were also used to characterize prepared material. Electrochemical measurements have been chosen to study the polymer adsorption process onto the iron surface and corrosion behavior which is greatly influenced by the PEI presence. The adsorption mechanism of PEI onto iron was proposed alongside the evaluation of Fe and Fe-PEI degradation behavior studied using the impedance method. Bonding via amino -NH2 group of PEI onto Fe and enhanced corrosion rate of coated samples were observed and confirmed.

Abstract
Iron (Fe) and Fe-based scaffolds have become a research frontier in absorbable materials which is inherent to their promising mechanical properties including fatigue strength and ductility. Nevertheless, their slow corrosion rate and low biocompatibility have been their major obstacles to be applied in clinical applications. Over the last decade, various modifications on porous Fe-based scaffolds have been performed to ameliorate both properties encompassing surface coating, microstructural alteration via alloying, and advanced topologically order structural design produced by additive manufacturing (AM) techniques. The recent advent of AM produces topologically ordered porous Fe-based structures with an optimized architecture having controllable pore size and strut thickness, intricate internal design, and larger exposed surface area. This undoubtedly opens up new options for controlling Fe corrosion and its structural strengths. However, the in vitro biocompatibility of the AM porous Fe still needs to be addressed considering its higher corrosion rate due to the larger exposed surface area. This review summarizes the latest progress of the modifications on porous Fe-based scaffolds with a specific focus on their responses on the corrosion behavior and biocompatibility.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled the fabrication of biodegradable porous metals to satisfy the desired characteristics for orthopedic applications. The geometrical design on AM biodegradable metallic scaffolds has been found to offer a favorable opportunity to regulate their mechanical and degradation performance in previous studies, however mostly confined to static responses. In this study, we presented the effect of the geometrical design on the dynamic responses of AM Mg scaffolds for the first time. Three different types of porous structures, based on various unit cells (i.e., biomimetic, diamond, and sheet-based gyroid), were established and then subjected to selective laser melting (SLM) process using group-developed Mg-Nd-Zn-Zr alloy (JDBM) powders. The topology after dynamic electropolishing, dynamic compressive properties, and dynamic biodegradation behavior of the AM Mg scaffolds were comprehensively evaluated. It was found that dynamic electropolishing effectively removed the excessive adhered powders on the surfaces and resulted in similar geometrical deviations amongst the AM Mg scaffolds, independent of their porous structures. The geometrical design significantly affected the compressive fatigue properties of the AM Mg scaffolds, of which the sheeted-based gyroid structure demonstrated a superior fatigue endurance limit of 0.85 at 106 cycles. Furthermore, in vitro dynamic immersion behaviors of the AM Mg scaffolds revealed a decent dependence on local architectures, where the sheeted-based gyroid scaffold experienced the lowest structural loss with a relatively uniform degradation mode. The obtained results indicate that the geometrical design could provide a promising strategy to develop desirable bone substitutes for the treatment of critical-size load-bearing defects. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Additive manufacturing (AM) has provided unprecedented opportunities to fabricate geometrically complex biodegradable scaffolds where the topological design becomes a key determinant on comprehensive performance. In this paper, we fabricate 3 AM biodegradable Mg scaffolds (i.e., biomimetic, diamond, and sheet-based gyroid) and report the effect of the geometrical design on the dynamic responses of AM Mg scaffolds for the first time. The results revealed that the sheeted-based gyroid scaffold exhibited the best combination of superior compressive fatigue properties and relatively uniform dynamic biodegradation mode, suggesting that the regulation of the porous structures could be an effective approach for the optimization of AM Mg scaffolds as to satisfy clinical requirements in orthopedic applications.

Abstract
For orthopaedic applications, additive manufactured (AM) porous scaffolds made of absorbable metals such as magnesium, zinc or iron are of particular interest. They do not only offer the potential to design and fabricate bio-mimetic or rather bone-equivalent mechanical properties, they also do not need to be removed in further surgery. Located in a physiological environment, scaffolds made of absorbable metals show a decreasing Young’s modulus over time, due to product dissolution. For magnesium-based scaffolds during the first days an increase of the smeared Young’s modulus can be observed, which is mainly attributed to a forming substrate layer of degradation products on the strut surfaces. In this study, the influence of degradation products on the stiffness properties of metallic scaffolds is investigated. For this, analytical calculations and finite-element simulations are performed to study the influence of the substrate layer thickness and Young’s modulus for single struts and for a new scaffold geometry with adapted polar cubic face-centered unit cells with vertical struts (f2cc,z). The finite-element model is further validated by compression tests on AM scaffolds made from Zn1Mg (1 wt% Mg). The results show that even low thicknesses and Young’s moduli of the substrate layer significantly increases the smeared Young’s modulus under axial compression.

Abstract
Coating of the biodegradable metals represents an effective way of modification of their properties. Insufficient biological, mechanical, or degradation performance of pure metals may be enhanced when the proper type of organic polymer coating is used. In our previous work, the significant effect of the polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating not only on the rate but also on the type of corrosion was discovered. To bring a comprehensive overview of the Fe-PEI system performance, iron-based biodegradable scaffolds with polyethyleneimine coating were studied and their cytocompatibility and hemocompatibility, and mechanical properties were evaluated and discussed in this work. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were conducted for further study of material behavior. Biological analyses (MTS assay, fluorescent imaging, hemocompatibility tests) showed better cell proliferation on the surface of Fe-PEI samples but not sufficient overall cytocompatibility. Good anti-platelet adhesion properties but higher hemolysis when compared to the pure iron was also observed for the coated samples. Mechanical properties of the prepared Fe-PEI material were enhanced after coating. These findings suggest that the Fe-PEI may be an interesting potential biomaterial after further composition optimization resulting in lower cytotoxicity and better hemocompatibility.

Abstract
Iron (Fe) and Fe-based materials have been vigorously explored in orthopedic applications in the past decade mainly owing to their promising mechanical properties including high yield strength, elastic modulus and ductility. Nevertheless, their corrosion products and low corrosion kinetics are the major concerns that need to be improved further despite their appealing mechanical strengths. The current studies on porous Fe-based scaffolds show an improved corrosion rate but the in vitro biocompatibility is still problematic in general. Unlike the Mg implants, the biodegradation and bioabsorption of Fe-based implants are still not well described. This vague issue could implicate the development of Fe-based materials as potential medical implants as they have not reached the clinical trial stage yet. Thus, there is a need to understand in-depth the Fe corrosion behavior and its bioabsorption mechanism to facilitate the material design of Fe-based scaffolds and further improve its biocompatibility. This manuscript provides an important insight into the basic bioabsorption of the multi-ranged Fe-based corrosion products with a review of the latest progress on the corrosion & in vitro biocompatibility of porous Fe-based scaffolds together with the remaining challenges and the perspective on the future direction.

Abstract
Powder metallurgy is one of the most prevalent ways for metallic degradable materials preparation. Knowledge of the properties of initial powders used during this procedure is therefore of great importance. Two different metals, iron and zinc, were selected and studied in this paper due to their promising properties in the field of biodegradable implants. Raw powders were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX). Powders (Fe, Zn and Fe-Zn in a weight ratio of 1:1) were then compressed at the pressure of 545 MPa to the form of pellets with a diameter of 1.7 cm. Surface morphology and degradation behavior in the Hanks´ solution were studied and evaluated. Electrochemical polarization tests along with the static immersion tests carried out for 21 days were employed for corrosion behavior characterization. The highest corrosion rate was observed for pure Zn powder followed by the Fe-Zn and Fe, respectively. A mixed Fe-Zn sample showed similar properties as pure zinc with no signs of iron degradation after 21 days due to the effect of galvanic protection secured by the zinc acting as a sacrificial anode.

Abstract
Laser additive manufacturing has led to a paradigm shift in the design of next-generation customized porous implants aiming to integrate better with the surrounding bone. However, conflicting design criteria have limited the development of fully functional porous implants; increasing porosity improves body fluid/cell-laden prepolymer permeability at the expense of compromising mechanical stability. Here, functionally gradient porosity implants and scaffolds designed based on interconnected triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) are demonstrated. High local porosity is defined at the implant/tissue interface aiming to improve the biological response. Gradually decreasing porosity from the surface to the center of the porous constructs provides mechanical strength in selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V implants. The effect of unit cell size is studied to discover the printability limit where the specific surface area is maximized. Furthermore, mechanical studies on the unit cell topology effects suggest that the bending-dominated architectures can provide significantly enhanced strength and deformability, compared to stretching-dominated architectures. A finite element (FE) model developed also showed great predictability (within ∼13%) of the mechanical responses of implants to physical activities. Finally, in vitro biocompatibility studies were conducted for two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cases. The results of the 2D in conjunction with surface roughness show favored physical cell attachment on the implant surface. Also, the results of the 3D biocompatibility study for the scaffolds incorporated with a cell-laden gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel show excellent viability. The design procedure proposed here provides new insights into the development of porous hip implants with simultaneous high mechanical and biological responses.

Abstract
Design an implant similar to the human bone is one of the critical problems in bone tissue engineering. Metal porous scaffolds have good prospects in bone tissue replacement due to their matching elastic modulus, better strength, and biocompatibility. However, traditional processing methods are challenging to fabricate scaffolds with a porous structure, limiting the development of porous scaffolds. With the advancement of additive manufacturing (AM) and computer-aided technologies, the development of porous metal scaffolds also ushers in unprecedented opportunities. In recent years, many new metal materials and innovative design methods are used to fabricate porous scaffolds with excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. This article reviews the research progress of porous metal scaffolds, and introduces the AM technologies used in porous metal scaffolds. Then the applications of different metal materials in bone scaffolds are summarized, and the advantages and limitations of various scaffold design methods are discussed. Finally, we look forward to the development prospects of AM in porous metal scaffolds.

Abstract
Today, the rational combination of materials and design has enabled the development of bio-inspired lattice structures with unprecedented properties to mimic biological features. The present study aims to investigate the mechanical performance and energy absorption capacity of such sophisticated hybrid soft–hard structures with gradient lattices. The structures are designed based on the diversity of materials and graded size of the unit cells. By changing the unit cell size and arrangement, five different graded lattice structures with various relative densities made of soft and hard materials are numerically investigated. The simulations are implemented using ANSYS finite element modeling (FEM) (2020 R1, 2020, ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA) considering elastic-plastic and the hardening behavior of the materials and geometrical non-linearity. The numerical results are validated against experimental data on three-dimensional (3D)-printed lattices revealing the high accuracy of the FEM. Then, by combination of the dissimilar soft and hard polymeric materials in a homogenous hexagonal lattice structure, two dual-material mechanical lattice statures are designed, and their mechanical performance and energy absorption are studied. The results reveal that not only gradual changes in the unit cell size provide more energy absorption and improve mechanical performance, but also the rational combination of soft and hard materials make the lattice structure with the maximum energy absorption and stiffness, in comparison to those structures with a single material, interesting for multi-functional applications.

Abstract
In-depth analyses of post-corrosion mechanical properties and architecture of open cell iron foams with hollow struts as absorbable bone scaffolds were carried out. Variations in the architectural features of the foams after 14 days of immersion in a Hanks' solution were investigated using micro-computed tomography and scanning electron microscope images. Finite element Kelvin foam model was developed, and the numerical modeling and experimental results were compared against each other. It was observed that the iron foam samples were mostly corroded in the periphery regions. Except for quasi-elastic gradient, other mechanical properties (i.e. compressive strength, yield strength and energy absorbability) decreased monotonically with immersion time. Presence of adherent corrosion products enhanced the load-bearing capacity of the open cell iron foams at small strains. The finite element prediction for the quasi-elastic response of the 14-day corroded foam was in an agreement with the experimental results. This study highlights the importance of considering corrosion mechanism when designing absorbable scaffolds; this is indispensable to offer desirable mechanical properties in porous materials during degradation in a biological environment.

Abstract
Extrusion-based 3D printing followed by debinding and sintering is a powerful approach that allows for the fabrication of porous scaffolds from materials (or material combinations) that are otherwise very challenging to process using other additive manufacturing techniques. Iron is one of the materials that have been recently shown to be amenable to processing using this approach. Indeed, a fully interconnected porous design has the potential of resolving the fundamental issue regarding bulk iron, namely a very low rate of biodegradation. However, no extensive evaluation of the biodegradation behavior and properties of porous iron scaffolds made by extrusion-based 3D printing has been reported. Therefore, the in vitro biodegradation behavior, electrochemical response, evolution of mechanical properties along with biodegradation, and responses of an osteoblastic cell line to the 3D printed iron scaffolds were studied. An ink formulation, as well as matching 3D printing, debinding and sintering conditions, was developed to create iron scaffolds with a porosity of 67%, a pore interconnectivity of 96%, and a strut density of 89% after sintering. X-ray diffracometry confirmed the presence of the α-iron phase in the scaffolds without any residuals from the rest of the ink. Owing to the presence of geometrically designed macropores and random micropores in the struts, the in vitro corrosion rate of the scaffolds was much improved as compared to the bulk counterpart, with 7% mass loss after 28 days. The mechanical properties of the scaffolds remained in the range of those of trabecular bone despite 28 days of in vitro biodegradation. The direct culture of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts on the scaffolds led to a substantial reduction in living cell count, caused by a high concentration of iron ions, as revealed by the indirect assays. On the other hand, the ability of the cells to spread and form filopodia indicated the cytocompatibility of the corrosion products. Taken together, this study shows the great potential of extrusion-based 3D printed porous iron to be further developed as a biodegradable bone substituting biomaterial.

Abstract
Topological design provides additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable porous metallic biomaterials with a unique opportunity to adjust their biodegradation behavior and mechanical properties, thereby satisfying the requirements for ideal bone substitutes. However, no information is available yet concerning the effect of topological design on the performance of AM porous zinc (Zn) that outperforms Mg and Fe in biodegradation behavior. Here, we studied one functionally graded and two uniform AM porous Zn designs with diamond unit cell. Cylindrical specimens were fabricated from pure Zn powder by using a powder bed fusion technique, followed by a comprehensive study on their static and dynamic biodegradation behaviors, mechanical properties, permeability, and biocompatibility. Topological design, indeed, affected the biodegradation behavior of the specimens, as evidenced by 150% variations in biodegradation rate between the three different designs. After in vitro dynamic immersion for 28 days, the AM porous Zn had weight losses of 7-12%, relying on the topological design. The degradation rates satisfied the desired biodegradation time of 1-2 years for bone substitution. The mechanical properties of the biodegraded specimens of all the groups maintained within the range of those of cancellous bone. As opposed to the trends observed for other biodegradable porous metals, after 28 days of in vitro biodegradation, the yield strengths of the specimens of all the groups (σy = 7-14 MPa) increased consistently, as compared to those of the as-built specimens (σy = 4-11 MPa). Moreover, AM porous Zn showed excellent biocompatibility, given that the cellular activities in none of the groups differed from the Ti controls for up to 72 h. Using topological design of AM porous Zn for controlling its mechanical properties and degradation behavior is thus clearly promising, thereby rendering flexibility to the material to meet a variety of clinical requirements.

Abstract
Recent years have witnessed surging demand for bone repair/regeneration implants due to the increasing number of bone defects caused by trauma, cancer, infection, and arthritis worldwide. In addition to bone autografts and allografts, biomaterial substitutes have been widely used in clinical practice. Personalized implants with precise and personalized control of shape, porosity, composition, surface chemistry, and mechanical properties will greatly facilitate the regeneration of bone tissue and satiate the clinical needs. Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, also known as 3D printing, are drawing fast growing attention in the fabrication of implants or scaffolding materials due to their capability of manufacturing complex and irregularly shaped scaffolds in repairing bone defects in clinical practice. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in the development of materials and techniques used in the additive manufacturing of bone scaffolds. In addition, clinical application, pre-clinical trials and future prospects of AM based bone implants are also summarized and discussed.

Abstract
Compared with non-degradable materials, biodegradable biomaterials play an increasingly important role in the repairing of severe bone defects, and have attracted extensive attention from researchers. In the treatment of bone defects, scaffolds made of biodegradable materials can provide a crawling bridge for new bone tissue in the gap and a platform for cells and growth factors to play a physiological role, which will eventually be degraded and absorbed in the body and be replaced by the new bone tissue. Traditional biodegradable materials include polymers, ceramics and metals, which have been used in bone defect repairing for many years. Although these materials have more or fewer shortcomings, they are still the cornerstone of our development of a new generation of degradable materials. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, in the twenty-first century, more and more kinds of new biodegradable materials emerge in endlessly, such as new intelligent micro-nano materials and cell-based products. At the same time, there are many new fabrication technologies of improving biodegradable materials, such as modular fabrication, 3D and 4D printing, interface reinforcement and nanotechnology. This review will introduce various kinds of biodegradable materials commonly used in bone defect repairing, especially the newly emerging materials and their fabrication technology in recent years, and look forward to the future research direction, hoping to provide researchers in the field with some inspiration and reference.

Abstract
Three different triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) with three levels of porosity within those of cancellous bone were investigated as potential bone scaffolds. TPMS have emerged as potential designs to resemble the complex mechanical and mass transport properties of bone. Diamond, Schwarz, and Gyroid structures were 3D printed in polylactic acid, a resorbable medical grade material. The 3D printed structures were investigated for printing feasibility, and assessed by morphometric studies. Mechanical properties and permeability investigations resulted in similar values to cancellous bone. The morphometric analyses showed three different patterns of pore distribution: mono-, bi-, and multimodal pores. Subsequently, biological activity investigated with pre-osteoblastic cell lines showed no signs of cytotoxicity, and the scaffolds supported cell proliferation up to 3 weeks. Cell differentiation investigated by alkaline phosphatase showed an improvement for higher porosities and multimodal pore distributions, suggesting a higher dependency on pore distribution and size than the level of interconnectivity.

Abstract
Partially due to the unavailability of ideal bone substitutes, the treatment of large bony defects remains one of the most important challenges of orthopedic surgery. Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable porous metals that have emerged since 2018 provide unprecedented opportunities for fulfilling the requirements of an ideal bone implant. First, the multi-scale geometry of these implants can be customized to mimic the human bone in terms of both micro-architecture and mechanical properties. Second, a porous structure with interconnected pores possesses a large surface area, which is favorable for the adhesion and proliferation of cells and, thus, bony ingrowth. Finally, the freeform geometrical design of such biomaterials could be exploited to adjust their biodegradation behavior so as to maintain the structural integrity of the implant during the healing process while ensuring that the implant disappears afterwards, paving the way for full bone regeneration. While the AM biodegradable porous metals that have been studied so far have shown many unique properties as compared to their solid counterparts, the unprecedented degree of flexibility in their geometrical design has not yet been fully exploited to optimize their properties and performance. In order to develop the ideal bone implants, it is important to take advantage of the full potential of AM biodegradable porous metals through detailed and systematic study on their biodegradation behavior, mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and bone regeneration performance. This review paper presents the state of the art in AM biodegradable porous metals and is focused on the effects of material type, processing, geometrical design, and post-AM treatments on the mechanical properties, biodegradation behavior, in vitro biocompatibility, and in vivo bone regeneration performance of AM porous Mg, Fe, and Zn as well as their alloys. We also identify a number of knowledge gaps and the challenges encountered in adopting AM biodegradable porous metals for orthopedic applications and suggest some promising areas for future research.

Abstract
Significant progress was achieved presently in the development of metallic foam-like materials improved by biocompatible coatings. Material properties of the iron, magnesium, zinc, and their alloys are promising for their uses in medical applications, especially for orthopedic and bone tissue purposes. Current processing technologies and a variety of modifications of the surface and composition facilitate the design of adjusted medical devices with desirable mechanical, morphological, and functional properties. This article reviews the recent progress in the design of advanced degradable metallic biomaterials perfected by different coatings: polymer, inorganic ceramic, and metallic. Appropriate coating of metallic foams could improve the biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and bone tissue-bonding properties. In this paper, a comprehensive review of different coating types used for the enhancement of one or several properties of biodegradable porous implants is given. An outline of the conventional preparation methods of metallic foams and a brief overview of different alloys for medical applications are also provided. In addition, current challenges and future research directions of processing and surface modifications of biodegradable metallic foams for medical applications are suggested.

Abstract
Porous metallic biomaterials developed from pentamode metamaterials (PMs) were rationally designed to mimic the topological, mechanical, and mass transport properties of human bones. Here, a series of diamond-based PMs with different strut parameters were fabricated from a Ti-6Al-4V powder by selective laser melting (SLM) technique. The morphological features, mechanical properties and permeability of PM samples were then characterized. In terms of morphology, the as-built PMs were well consistent with the as-designed ones, although the slight surface deviations were presented in overhanging areas. The PM scaffolds showed a switchable deformation pattern controlled by the slenderness ratio of struts. The double-cone strut topology increases the tortuosity and thereby accelerates the nutrients supply, waste removal, and cell migration to the whole scaffold region and circumambient bone tissue. The measured mechanical properties (i.e., E: 0.59-2.90 GPa, σy: 20.59-112.63 MPa) and computational permeability values (k: 9.87-49.19 × 10-9 m2) of PM scaffolds were all in accordance with those of trabecular bone. The experimental permeability values were linearly dependent on the results of simulations. This study showed the great potential of PMs as bone scaffolds. Moreover, we demonstrated that PM-based porous biomaterials can decouple the mass transport and mechanical properties of bone scaffolds, so as to achieve an unprecedented level of tailoring their multi-physics properties. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The topological diversity can significantly improve the adaptability of the implant to the primary bone tissue. Previous studies revealed that the mechanical and mass transport properties of porous biomaterials are correlated to the material types, porosities and lattice topologies but neglected effects of strut design. We show here the influence of strut morphology on the mechanical and mass transport properties which are independently tailored, that is, the mass transport properties can be markedly increased while maintaining the mechanical properties of mimicking specific bones, vice versa. This study emphasizes the importance of strut topological design in the development of AM porous biomaterials.

Abstract
Schwartz diamond graded porous structures (SDGPSs), constructed by a triply-periodic-minimal-surface diamond unit cell topology, were developed with various unit cell sizes and printed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) from a commercially pure titanium powder for bone implant applications. The effect of unit cell size on the printability, strut dimensions, stress and strain distributions, mechanical properties and energy absorption capability of SDGPSs was investigated. The results indicate the good printability of SDGPSs via LPBF with multiple unit cell sizes from 3.5 mm to 5.5 mm through the three-dimensional reconstruction from micro-computed tomography. The unit cell size plays a critical role in both strut diameters and specific surface areas of SDGPSs. An increase in the unit cell size leads to a reduction in the experimental Young's modulus from 673.08 MPa to 518.71 MPa and compressive yield strength from 11.43 MPa to 7.73 MPa. The mechanical properties of LPBF-printed SDGPSs are higher than those predicted by the finite element method, which is attributed to the higher volume fractions of the printed SDGPSs than the designed values. Furthermore, a rise in unit cell size leads to the decrease of energy absorption capability from 6.06 MJ/mm3 to 4.32 MJ/mm3 and exhibits little influence on the absorption efficiency. These findings provide a good understanding and guidance to the optimization on the unit cell size of functionally graded porous structures for desirable properties.

Abstract
Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable porous zinc exhibits great potential as a promising bone-substituting biomaterial. However, there is no information whatsoever available regarding its corrosion fatigue behavior. In this study, we used direct metal printing to fabricate topologically ordered biodegradable porous zinc based on a diamond unit cell. We compared the compression-compression fatigue behavior of AM porous zinc in air and in revised simulated body fluid (r-SBF). The fatigue strength of AM porous zinc was high in air (i.e., 70% of its yield strength) and even higher in r-SBF (i.e., 80% of its yield strength). The high value of the relative fatigue strength in air could be attributed to the good ductility of pure zinc itself. The formation of corrosion products around the strut junctions might explain the higher fatigue strength of AM zinc in r-SBF. Furthermore, we compared the fatigue behavior of a uniform design of the AM porous zinc with a functionally graded design. The functionally graded structure exhibited higher relative fatigue strengths than the uniform structure. The inspection of the fatigue crack distribution revealed that the functionally graded design controlled the sequence of crack initiation, which occurred early in the thicker struts and moved towards the thinner struts over time. The theoretical fatigue life models suggest that optimizing the functionally graded structure could be used as an effective means to improve the fatigue life of AM porous zinc. In conclusion, the favorable fatigue behavior of AM porous zinc further highlights its potential as a promising bone-substituting biomaterial. The Effects of Post Heat Treatment on the Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of an Additive-Manufactured Porous Titanium Alloy. MATERIALS 2020; 13:ma13030593. Abstract
In this work, Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) porous structures were prepared by selective laser melting (SLM), and the effects of post heat treatment on its microstructural and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that as SLM samples were mainly composed of needle-like α′ martensite. Heat treatment at 750 °C caused α′ phase to decompose, forming a lamellar α+β mixed microstructure. As the heat treatment temperature increased to 950 °C, the width of lamellar α phase gradually increased to 3.1 μm. Heat treatment also reduced the compressive strength of the samples; however, it significantly improved the ductility of the porous Ti64. Moreover, heat treatment improved the energy absorption efficiency of the porous Ti64. The samples heat-treated at 750 °C had the highest energy absorption of 233.6 ± 1.5 MJ/m3 at ε = 50%.
