Abstract
Image superimposition currently serves as an essential tool for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment by overlaying 2 or more images taken at different time intervals. Superimposition has proved to be an integral diagnostic tool in terms of assessing procedural accuracy, growth patterns, possible changes in extraoral soft tissue, and overall direction of teeth displacement. Several superimposition protocols have been proposed in literature. Traditionally, superimposition was done on 2-dimensional lateral cephalometric radiographs. However, this approach has its limitations. The rise of 3-dimensional (3D) imaging, including computed tomography and cone beam computed tomography, has introduced more advanced diagnostic tools. These technologies enable the creation of volumetric 3D images, which can be used for 3D superimposition to evaluate changes in the dentocraniofacial area. The primary techniques for 3D superimposition include landmark-based methods, surface-based methods, and the more recent voxel-based superimposition. By incorporating soft tissue data, the development of a virtual 3D patient is possible, offering substantial benefits in the field of dental and craniofacial medicine. Moreover, 4-dimensional superimposition, which captures the dynamics of temporomandibular joint and mandibular movements, is shifting research toward the study of dynamic, rather than static, virtual patients. Additionally, the advent of artificial intelligence is revolutionizing superimposition by enabling automated processes, which are poised to transform clinical and research practices. Here, we explore the recent advancements in superimposition techniques and their potential implications in dentocraniofacial analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cribriform foramina provide the openings for olfactory nerve fibers to cross from the nasal cavity to the olfactory bulb. Disruption of the olfactory nerve fibers is known to affect olfactory function, but little is known about the potential effects on the number of cribriform foramina in congenital anosmia. OBJECTIVE This pilot study aimed to investigate whether there was a reduction in foramina in patients with acquired and congenital anosmia (including both Kallmann syndrome and isolated congenital anosmia) compared to controls with normal olfactory function. METHODS Paranasal CT image stacks were analyzed from 20 patients with congenital anosmia (n = 6), acquired anosmia (n = 6), or normal olfactory function (n = 8). Cribriform foramina were counted by three observers from the slice revealing the crista galli and the ethmoidal slits. The two closest values for each subject were analyzed in comparison across the three groups using one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS Patients with congenital, but not acquired, anosmia had significantly fewer cribriform foramina (x̄ ± SE = 10.17 ± 1.23) compared to healthy, normosmic controls (x̄ ± SE = 19.88 ± 2.01). There was no significant difference in foramina count between congenital and acquired anosmics (x̄ ± SE = 15.83 ± 3.47). CONCLUSION In this pilot study, a reduced number of cribriform foramina was found in individuals with congenital anosmia. Examination of cribriform foramina could be helpful in counseling patients with olfactory loss. Further investigation in larger studies with additional cohorts is warranted.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: The literature suggests that the cranial base angle is considered one of the contributing factors to sagittal jaw malpositions when its relationship with the viscerocranium is examined. Our study aims to compare and evaluate the outcomes of fixed functional orthopedic treatment in patients with mandibular retrognathia across different cranial base groups. Methods: Participants were treated at Erciyes University with fixed functional appliances and categorized by CBA into low (<130°), medium (130°-134°), and high (>134°) groups. A total of 39 patients were included: 13 in the low CBA group (7 males, 6 females; mean age 14.62 ± 1.12 years), 13 in the medium CBA group (3 males, 9 females; mean age 14.38 ± 0.96 years), and 13 in the high CBA group (4 males, 9 females; mean age 14.08 ± 1.04 years). Results: In the low CBA group, Ar-Go-N (p = 0.005) and SNA (p = 0.023) angles significantly decreased, while the ANB angle and Wits appraisal significantly decreased across all groups (p < 0.05). The high CBA group showed increases in ANS-Me, N-Me, N-ANS, and N-Gn lengths (p < 0.05). The medium and high CBA groups had significant increases in S-Go and ANS-Gn lengths, while Co-Gn length increased significantly in the low and high CBA groups (p < 0.05). Incisor measurements (IMPA, L1-APog, L1/NB, L1-NB) increased in all groups, with overjet and overbite reduced (p < 0.05). U1/PP (p = 0.039), U1/SN (p = 0.043), U1-NA (p = 0.030), and U1/NA (p = 0.025) parameters increased in the low CBA group, with the Upper Lip-E distance decreasing significantly in the low and high CBA groups (p < 0.05). A comparison between groups showed significant differences in U1/PP, U1-NA, and U1/NA parameters, which increased in the low and medium CBA groups but decreased in the high CBA group. Conclusions: CBA influences treatment outcomes. The low CBA group experienced decreases in Ar-Go-N and SNA angles, while the high CBA group showed increases in certain vertical facial dimensions. Incisor parameters rose in the low and medium CBA groups but decreased in the high CBA group, suggesting limited CBA effects on treatment results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transesutural distraction osteogenesis (TSDO) is a method of correcting midfacial hypoplasia (MH) secondary to cleft lip and palate (CLP) without osteotomy. However, there has been little research on how the morphology of the cranial base changes postoperatively or whether any correction of the cranial base occurs. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 35 pediatric patients with MH secondary to CLP, who underwent TSDO treatment. Pre-treatment and post-treatment cranial computed tomography (CT) images were collected for cranial base measurements using 3-dimensional (3D) modeling reconstruction. For the comparative analysis, 102 children with normal craniofacial CT images were selected after matching for age and sex. RESULTS Comparison with normal children of the same age showed that the lengths and angles of several cranial base segments approached normal levels after treatment. In total, the authors found extreme extension in the anterior segment of the sphenoid bone, and in the middle cranial fossa. Simultaneously, TSDO therapy led to the anteroposterior diameter of the lateral pterygoid processes and vomer bone greatly exceeding the normal range, thus causing forward development of the midface skeleton. CONCLUSION After the TSDO procedure, the cranial base length and angles approached normal dimensions, accompanied by the forward advancement of the midfacial skeleton. Among the cranial base structures, TSDO resulted in the most noticeable increase in the sphenoid bone in terms of linear measurements and angles, thus promoting midfacial development in children.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cranial base flexure is an overlooked topic in craniofacial research. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to compare a new parameter, the planum clival angle (PCA), which represents cranial base flexure, in skeletal class I, II, and III malocclusions using cone beam computed tomographic images (CBCT) and correlate PCA with the stages of the fusion of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis (SOS). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 125 CBCTs were divided into two groups based on chronological age (19-25 years and 12-18 years). The CBCT images from 57 subjects (19-25 years old) were categorized into three groups based on their skeletal malocclusion for measuring PCA and cranial base angles (CBA). In the second group, comprising 68 CBCT data sets of individuals in the age group of 12-18 years, the PCA angle was correlated with stages of fusion of the SOS. Data were statistically analyzed using independent samples t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA, intergroup), Pearson correlation, and χ2 test. RESULTS There was a statistically significant linear correlation (P < 0.001) between the two parameters PCA and CBA but no significant difference was found in PCAs between the three groups. One-way ANOVA to compare the PCA values in the three stages of fusion of the SOS revealed a highly significant relationship in male subjects (p < 0.001), thereby, suggesting that as fusion progresses, the planum clival angle increases. The χ2 test to compare the planum clival angle in males and females revealed that SOS fusion occurred earlier in females. CONCLUSION There is a constant dynamic change in the value of the parameter PCA that progresses until completion of SOS fusion. The SOS fuses earlier in females. Assessment of the stage of fusion of the SOS can be used in deciding whether growth modification of the craniofacial complex is still possible during orthodontic therapy.

Abstract
Introduction A precise and accurate method for structural superimposition is essential for analyzing dentofacial growth and orthodontic or surgical treatment in longitudinal studies. The errors associated with different superimposition methods have not yet been assessed in high-quality studies. Objectives This study aimed to assess the precision and accuracy of digital image correlation (DIC) for structural superimposition. Methods Two cephalometric images from 30 consecutive patients were superimposed using three DIC methods, each measured twice by two examiners. Areas including the contours of the sella, the whole cranial base (CB), and Walker's point and lamina cribrosa (WPLC) were compared using a random coefficient model. Inter-rater and intra-rater errors were assessed for each method. Results WPLC provided the best precision for image rotation and cephalometric landmarks. Systematic bias was observed between the WPLC and CB methods for image rotation and most landmarks. The intra-rater error in image rotation during DIC was strongly correlated with the intra-rater error in the landmarks of the anterior nasal spine, articulare, and pogonion. Conclusion Structural superimposition using DIC with WPLC is a precise method for analyzing dentofacial growth and orthodontic or surgical treatment. Moreover, the best method is the measurement of longitudinal dental and craniofacial changes on structurally superimposed cephalometric radiographs with WPLC and a reference grid including the true vertical and horizontal lines from Walker's point.

Abstract
Objective Understanding the orofacial characteristics and growth patterns in children is essential for both orthodontics and research on children with orofacial abnormalities. However, a concise resource of normative data on the size and relative position of these structures in different populations is not available. Our objective was to aggregate normative data to assess the growth of the orofacial skeletal structures in children with a well-balanced face and normal occlusion. Methods The MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus databases were searched. Inclusion criteria included longitudinal and cross-sectional studies on cephalometric measurement of skeletal tissues and a study population ≤ 18 years with a well-balanced face and normal occlusion. Key study parameters were extracted, and knowledge was synthesized. A quality appraisal was performed using a 10-point scale. Results The final selection comprised of 12 longitudinal and 33 cross-sectional studies, the quality of which ranged from good to excellent. Our results showed that from childhood to adulthood, the length of the cranial base increased significantly while the cranial base angle remained constant; both the maxilla and mandible moved forward and downward. The profile becomes straighter with age. Conclusions Growth patterns in children with a well-balanced face and normal occlusion follow accepted theories of growth.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim was to assess skeletal stability after maxillary advancement using either distraction osteogenesis (DO) or conventional Le Fort I osteotomy (CO) in patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) or cleft palate (CP) utilising a new superimposition-based cephalometric method. METHOD This retrospective study included patients who were treated with DO (N = 12) or CO (N = 9). Sagittal and vertical changes after surgery, and skeletal stability at 18 months post-operatively were assessed with superimposition-based cephalometry, comparing lateral cephalograms performed pre-operatively (T0), post-operatively after CO or immediately after completed distraction in DO (T1), and at 18 months of follow-up (T2). RESULTS The mean sagittal movements from T0 to T2 in the DO and CO groups were 5.9 mm and 2.2 mm, respectively, with a skeletal relapse rate of 16% in the DO group and 15% in the CO group between T1 and T2. The vertical mean movement from T0 to T2 in the DO and CO groups was 2.8 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively, and the skeletal relapse rate between T1 and T2 was 36% in the DO group and 32% in the CO group. CONCLUSION Sagittal advancement of the maxilla was stable, in contrast to the vertical downward movement, which showed more-extensive relapse in both groups. Despite more-extensive maxillary advancement in the DO group, the rates of skeletal relapse were similar.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate the soft-tissue changes in the long-term after miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) and conventional rapid palatal expansion (RPE) appliances compared with a matched control group using voxel-based superimposition of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. METHODS A total of 180 CBCTs for 60 patients at 3-time points were evaluated: pretreatment (T1), postexpansion (T2), and posttreatment (T3) for 3 groups: (1) MARPE, (2) RPE, and (3) controls (time-period T1 to T3: MARPE, 2 years 8 months; RPE, 2 years 9 months; control, 2 years 7 months). The voxel-based superimposition technique was used to superimpose the CBCT scans, after which the soft-tissue surfaces were extracted from the superimposed T1-CBCT, T2-CBCT, and T3-CBCT scans. Nine landmarks were identified on the CBCT scans: nasion, A-point, pogonion, right and left alar base, right and left zygoma, and right and left gonion. The coordinates of the 9 parameters were obtained in the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis for the CBCT scans and subjected to statistical analyses. The changes in the soft-tissue surfaces were also evaluated by color-coded maps for short-term (T2) and long-term (T3) changes. The mean changes from T1 to T2 and T1 to T3 were tested against no change within the groups by paired t test, and the mean changes among the 3 groups were compared with analysis of variance F test with Tukey's Honest significant difference used for adjusting P values for multiple testing. RESULTS In the short term, both MARPE and RPE led to a significant downward movement of pogonion, left gonion, and lateral movement of the right and left alar base compared with controls at T2 (P <0.05). In addition, MARPE led to a significant downward movement of right gonion than controls at T2 (P <0.05). Moreover, RPE led to a significant downward and forward movement of A-point and downward movement of the right and left alar base than controls at T2 (P <0.05). However, in the long-term, there were no significant differences in the soft-tissue changes among the MARPE, RPE, and control groups. CONCLUSIONS MARPE and RPE do not lead to significant soft-tissue changes in the long term when compared with controls.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The growth of the sphenoethmoidal and sphenofrontal suture in the anterior cranial base (ACB) terminates around 7 years old; therefore, ACB is used as a reference structure for superimposing radiographs in 2-dimensions (2D) and 3-dimensions (3D). The data in the literature regarding the cessation of growth of ACB in 3D is insufficient. The study aimed to evaluate the volumetric changes of ACB in growing patients on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data in 3D. METHODS The CBCT sample was obtained from a repository of scans of subjects (n = 30) aged 6-11 years with no craniofacial anomalies or growth-related disorders. CBCTs were taken at 2 time points (approximately 12 months apart). The mean age at the initial scan (T1) was 8.4 ± 0.89 years, and the follow-up scan (T2) was 9.6 ± 0.99 years. The bones of the ACB were segmented, and 3D models of the bones were generated using Mimics software. The volumetric measurement was performed on the 3D-rendered model. Linear measurements were performed on the slices. RESULTS The volumetric analysis of the ACB between T1 and T2 showed a significant change (P <0.0001). There were no significant differences in volumetric changes of the ACB between the male and female subjects. The linear measurements on the right side of the cranial base showed continued growth between T1 and T2. CONCLUSIONS In the studied sample, growth-related changes of ACB were observed through volumetric analysis after 7 years old.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The structures of the skull and the brain are related to each other. Prior work in individuals with isolated congenital anosmia (ICA) showed that these individuals were characterized by olfactory bulb (OB) defects. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological pattern of the anterior skull base surrounding the OB between individuals with ICA and normosmic controls. We meant to investigate whether these features can help distinguish abnormalities from normal variation. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study to acquire T2-weighted magnetic resonance images from individuals diagnosed with ICA (n = 31) and healthy, normosmic controls matched for age and gender (n = 62). Between both groups, we compared the depth and width of the olfactory fossa, the angle of the ethmoidal fovea, as well as the angle of the lateral lamella of the cribriform plate. Within the ICA group, we further performed subgroup analyses based on the presence or absence of the OB, to investigate whether the morphology of the anterior skull base relates to the presence of OBs. The diagnostic performance of these parameters was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic analysis. RESULTS Individuals with ICA exhibited a flattened ethmoid roof and shallower olfactory fossa when compared to controls. Further, the absence of the OB was found to be associated with a higher degree of flattening of the ethmoid roof and a shallow olfactory fossa. We reached the results in the following areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves: 0.80 - angle of fovea ethmoidalis, 0.76 - depth of olfactory fossa, 0.70 - angle of lateral lamella of the cribriform plate for significant differentiation between individuals with ICA and normosmic controls. CONCLUSION Individuals with ICA exhibited an unusual anterior skull base surrounding the OB. This study supports the idea of an integrated development of OB and anterior skull base. Hence, the morphological pattern of the anterior skull base surrounding the OB helps distinguish individuals with ICA from normosmic controls and may therefore be useful for the diagnosis of ICA, although it is certainly not an invariable sign of congenital anosmia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess morphological changes of the upper anterior alveolus after retraction of a maxillary incisor by applying three-dimensional (3D) superimposition of pretreatment (T1) and posttreatment (T2) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data. METHODS The study group was comprised of 28 patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion who underwent incisor retraction. CBCT data were acquired before (T1) and after (T2) orthodontic treatment. Labial and palatal alveolar thickness were assessed at the crestal, midroot and apical levels of the retracted incisors. Following three-dimensional (3D) cranial base superimposition, we performed surface modeling and inner remodeling of the labial and palatal alveolar cortex of the maxillary incisors. Paired t-tests were used to compare T0 and T1 bone thickness and volume measurements. Comparisons between labial and palatal surface modeling, inner remodeling and outer surface modeling were performed with paired t-tests in SPSS 20.0 version. RESULTS We observed controlled tipping retraction of the upper incisor. After treatment, the alveolar thickness on the labial sides increased and the palatal alveolar thickness decreased. The labial cortex showed a wider range of modeling area with a larger bending height and a smaller bending angle than the palatal side. The extent of inner remodeling was more prominent than the outer surface on both the labial and palatal sides. CONCLUSIONS Adaptive alveolar surface modeling occurred in response to incisor tipping retraction on both the lingual and labial sides although these changes occurred in an uncoordinated manner. Tipping retraction of the maxillary incisors led to a reduction in alveolar volume.

Abstract
Age-related skeletal and soft-tissue changes are important in orthodontics, especially due to the increase of adult patients seeking treatment. The aim of this study is to assess the available evidence regarding age-related skeletal and soft-tissue changes in untreated Angle Class I. Articles studying skeletal and soft-tissue changes in orthodontically untreated subjects with Angle Class I and comparing them between age groups were included. Studies focusing on a single age group or in languages other than English were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed with both the MINORS and ROBINS-I tools. 50 studies were included, showing high methodological heterogeneity and a lack of information in subjects over 60 years old. In subjects with Angle Class I, the mandibular plane inclination was reported to reduce from 7 and 20 years old, while the anterior and posterior facial height continue to increase in late adult life. The anterior cranial base length increases until 20 years old, afterwards decreasing slowly until late adulthood. Nasal width increases and the nasolabial angle decreases during adolescence. Upper lip length and lower lip length increase from 6 to 18 years along with retrusion of the lips in late adulthood. Age-related skeletal and soft-tissue changes are documented in the literature from childhood until the fifth decade of life, but studies mostly focus on subjects until 20 years old. Changes after the second decade of life are studied only for the vertical and sagittal dimensions. No changes are reported in the transversal dimension beyond 15 years for neither skeletal nor soft tissues. Well-designed, long-term prospective cohort studies considering all three dimensions of skeletal and soft tissues are needed for confirmation of these findings (PROSPERO: CRD42020203206).

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this case-control study was to investigate occlusal characteristics, received orthodontic treatment, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), and satisfaction with dental esthetics in adults operated due to sagittal synostosis. METHODS The study group consisted of 40 adults (25 males, 15 females, mean age 27.4 years, range 18-41) who were operated due to isolated sagittal synostosis in childhood. The control group comprised 40 age and gender-matched adults. Occlusal characteristics were evaluated clinically during study visits. Information on the previous orthodontic treatment was collected from dental records. OHRQoL was measured using the 14-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and satisfaction with dental esthetics was evaluated using a visual analogue scale. RESULTS No statistically significant differences were found between the patient group and the controls in malocclusion traits (overjet, overbite, molar relationships, crossbite, scissor bite), previous orthodontic treatment, pre-treatment malocclusion diagnoses, OHIP variables, or satisfaction with dental esthetics. However, there was a tendency toward increased overjet and overbite in scaphocephalic patients. CONCLUSION It seems that adults with scaphocephaly operated in childhood do not differ from the average population in terms of occlusion, received orthodontic treatment, or oral health-related well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cephalometric analysis is essential for diagnosis, treatment planning and outcome assessment of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery. Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve automated landmark localization has proved feasible and convenient. However, current systems remain insufficient for clinical application, as patients exhibit various malocclusions in cephalograms produced by different manufacturers while limited cephalograms were applied to train AI in these systems. METHODS A robust and clinically applicable AI system was proposed for automatic cephalometric analysis. First, 9870 cephalograms taken by different radiography machines with various malocclusions of patients were collected from 20 medical institutions. Then 30 landmarks of all these cephalogram samples were manually annotated to train an AI system, composed of a two-stage convolutional neural network and a software-as-a-service system. Further, more than 100 orthodontists participated to refine the AI-output landmark localizations and retrain this system. RESULTS The average landmark prediction error of this system was as low as 0.94 ± 0.74 mm and the system achieved an average classification accuracy of 89.33%. CONCLUSIONS An automatic cephalometric analysis system based on convolutional neural network was proposed, which can realize automatic landmark location and cephalometric measurements classification. This system showed promise in improving diagnostic efficiency in clinical circumstances.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to identify the normal vertical positions of sella (S) and nasion (N) points in subjects with a normal inclination of anterior cranial bases. MATERIALS AND METHODS Lateral cephalograms of 117 subjects who had a normal ∠SN-FH plane (7° ± 1°), ∠SN-palatal plane (9° ± 2°), ∠FH-palatal plane (1° ± 1°), and cranial base angles (131° ± 4°) were included in the study. Various linear and angular parameters and ratios were evaluated to determine the normal vertical positions of S and N points. An unpaired t-test was used to identify any significant differences between males and females. The P value of 0.05 was considered as the level of significance. RESULTS Among subjects with the normal inclinations of SN, FH, and palatal planes and cranial base angle, the mean values of ∠Ar-S-Ptm, ∠S-Ptm-Ar, and ∠S-Ar-Ptm were 59.38° ± 3.52°, 59.70° ± 3.21°, and 60.84° ± 3.56°, respectively, forming an almost equilateral triangle between S, Ar, and Ptm points. The mean values of ∠Ba-S-PNS, ∠S-PNS-Ba, and ∠S-Ba-PNS were 59.56° ± 3.17°, 59.72° ± 3.47°, and 60.76° ± 3.11°, respectively, forming another approximate equilateral triangle between S, Ba, and PNS points. The mean S-FH to N-FH ratio was 0.67 ± 0.06% for the whole sample, but it was significantly greater in males (0.69 ± 0.07%) compared to females (0.65 ± 0.06%) (P=0.002). CONCLUSIONS Two approximate equilateral triangles were formed between S, Ar, and Ptm points; and S, Ba, and PNS points in subjects with normal inclinations of SN, FH, and palatal planes and cranial base angle. The S-FH to N-FH ratio was an excellent guide to locating the normal vertical position of S and N points.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to investigate the midsagittal reference plane (MSP) reliability derived from the 3-dimensional characteristics of patients with or without facial asymmetry in the anterior cranial base (ACB). METHODS We divided the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 60 adult patients into maxillofacial symmetry and asymmetry groups. The ACB models were 3-dimensionally constructed, and then symmetrical characteristics were evaluated with surface asymmetry for each group. The reliability of the MSP derived from the symmetry of the anterior cranial base (MSPACB) was assessed in comparison with the true craniofacial symmetry plane determined using the morphometric method. RESULTS The ACB was symmetrical, as demonstrated by slight surface asymmetry. The MSPACB was reliable for maxillofacial asymmetrical analysis as the intraobserver and interobserver measurements using the MSPACB were of excellent agreement, and there was no significant difference between MSPACB and morphometric method in asymmetrical measurements in both groups. The MSPACB remained stable (maximum deviation <0.32 mm) when cranial landmark identification errors (1 mm and 4 mm) were simulated. CONCLUSIONS MSPACB is reliable for patients with or without facial asymmetry in maxillofacial asymmetry analysis, which is beneficial to patients with severe midfacial asymmetry or trauma when conventional landmarks are displaced or disappear. When using MSPACB for patients with cranial malformations or those whose ACBs differ from normal dimensions, caution should be taken.

Abstract
A standard method to assess changes in craniofacial morphology over time is through the superimposition of serial patient images. This study evaluated the reliability of a novel anterior cranial base reference area, principally including stable midline structures (EMACB) after an early age, and compared it to the total anterior cranial base (TACB) and an area including only midline structures (MACB). Fifteen pairs of pre-existing serial CBCT images acquired from growing patients were superimposed with all techniques by applying a best-fit registration algorithm of corresponding voxel intensities (Dolphin 3D software). The research outcomes were the reproducibility of each technique and the agreement between them in skeletal change detection, as well as their validity. The TACB and EMACB methods were valid, since the superimposed midline ACB structures consistently showed adequate overlap. They also presented perfect overall reproducibility (median error < 0.01 mm) and agreement (median difference < 0.01 mm). MACB showed reduced validity, higher errors, and a moderate agreement to the TACB. Thus, the EMACB method performed efficiently and mainly included the stable midline ACB structures during growth. Based on the technical, anatomical, and biological principles applied when superimposing serial 3D data to assess craniofacial changes, we recommend the EMACB method as the method of choice to fulfil this purpose.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate three-dimensionally (3D) the stability of Nasion (Na), Sella (S), Basion (Ba), Porion (Po), and Orbitale (Or) in different age groups of growing Class II malocclusion patients and, additionally, to assess rotational changes of the S-Na and Ba-Na lines and the Frankfurt Horizontal Plane (FHP). MATERIALS AND METHODS Cone-beam computed tomography studies of 67 Class II division 1 malocclusion patients, acquired at baseline (T0) and 1 year later (T1), were retrospectively assessed. Anterior cranial fossa was used for volumetric superimposition. Subjects were grouped according to their age at T0: group 1 (G1) (8-10 years), G2 (11-13 years), and G3 (14-17 years). Quantitative assessments of the 3D linear displacements (Euclidean distance) in the position of Na, S, Ba, Po, and Or were performed. Displacement in the X, Y, and Z projections and the rotation of S-Na, Na-Ba, and FHP were also quantified. RESULTS All cephalometric landmarks showed 3D displacement (P = .001) in the three age groups. Orbitale remained stable in the vertical and sagittal dimension from 8 to 17 years (P > .05). S-Na, Na-Ba, and the FHP showed statistically significant angular rotation (P < .05) in younger patients (G1), while in older individuals (G2 and G3) they were stable (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS Na, S, Ba, and Po showed vertical and sagittal positional changes relative to the anterior cranial fossa during the growth of Class II individuals. After age 11, S-Na, Na-Ba, and FHP did not show rotation and, thus, are valid parameters for angular cephalometric analysis in Class II growing patients.

Abstract
The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the sagittal and vertical growth of the maxillo–mandibular complex in untreated children using orthogonal lateral cephalograms compressed from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Two sets of scans, on 12 males (mean 8.75 years at T1, and 11.52 years at T2) and 18 females (mean 9.09 years at T1, and 10.80 years at T2), were analyzed using Dolphin 3D imaging. The displacements of the landmarks and rotations of both jaws relative to the cranial base were measured using the cranial base, and the maxillary and mandibular core lines. From T1 to T2, relative to the cranial base, the nasion, orbitale, A-point, and B-point moved anteriorly and inferiorly. The porion moved posteriorly and inferiorly. The ANB and mandibular plane angle decreased. All but one subject had forward rotation in reference to the cranial base. The maxillary and mandibular superimpositions showed no sagittal change on the A-point and B-point. The U6 and U1 erupted at 0.94 and 1.01 mm/year (males) and 0.82 and 0.95 mm/year (females), respectively. The L6 and L1 erupted at 0.66 and 0.88 mm/year (males), and at 0.41 mm/year for both the L6 and the L1 (females), respectively.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the reliability and reproducibility and compare the outcomes of two 3D voxel-based superimposition techniques for craniofacial CBCT images, using anterior cranial base areas of different extent as references. Fifteen preexisting pairs of serial CBCTs (initial age: 11.7 ± 0.6 years; interval: 1.7 ± 0.4 years) were superimposed on total anterior cranial base (TACB) or middle anterior cranial base (MACB) structures through the Dolphin 3D software. The overlap of the reference structures was assessed visually to indicate reliability. All superimpositions were repeated by the same investigator. Outcomes were compared to assess the agreement between the two methods. Reliability was perfect for the TACB and moderate for the MACB method (p = 0.044). Both areas showed good overall reproducibility, though in individual cases there were notable differences for MACB superimpositions, ranging from −1.84 to 1.64 mm (TACB range: −0.48 to 0.31 mm). The overall agreement in the detected T0/T1 changes was also good, though it was significantly reduced for individual measurements (median < 0.01 mm, IQR: 0.46 mm, range: −2.81 to 0.73 mm). In conclusion, the voxel-based superimposition on TACB was more reliable and showed higher reproducibility than the superimposition on MACB. Thus, the extended anterior cranial base area is recommended for the assessment of craniofacial changes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine if an automated superimposition method using six landmarks (Sella, Nasion, Porion, Orbitale, Basion, and Pterygoid) would be more suitable than the traditional Sella-Nasion (SN) method to evaluate growth changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serial lateral cephalograms at an average interval of 2.7 years were taken on 268 growing children who had not undergone orthodontic treatment. The T1 and T2 lateral images were manually traced. Three different superimposition methods: Björk's structural method, conventional SN, and the multiple landmark (ML) superimposition methods were applied. Bjork's structural method was used as the gold standard. Comparisons among the superimposition methods were carried out by measuring the linear distances between Anterior Nasal Spine, point A, point B, and Pogonion using each superimposition method. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify factors that could affect the accuracy of the superimpositions. RESULTS The ML superimposition method demonstrated smaller differences from Björk's method than the conventional SN method did. Greater differences among the cephalometric landmarks tested resulted when: the designated point was farther from the cranial base, the T1 age was older, and the more time elapsed between T1 and T2. CONCLUSIONS From the results of this study in growing patients, the ML superimposition method seems to be more similar to Björk's structural method than the SN superimposition method. A major advantage of the ML method is likely to be that it can be applied automatically and may be just as reliable as manual superimposition methods.

Abstract
Currently, the primary techniques applied for the assessment of facial changes over time utilize 2D images. However, this approach has important limitations related to the dimensional reduction and the accuracy of the used data. 3D facial photography has been recently introduced as a risk-free alternative that overcomes these limitations. However, the proper reference areas that should be used to superimpose serial 3D facial images of growing individuals are not yet known. Here, we tested various 3D facial photo superimposition reference areas and compared their outcomes to those of a standard anterior cranial base superimposition technique. We found that a small rectangular area on the forehead plus an area including the middle part of the nose and the lower wall of the orbital foramen provided comparable results to the standard technique and showed adequate reproducibility. Other reference areas that have been used so far in the literature were less reliable. Within the limitations of the study, a valid superimposition reference area for serial 3D facial images of growing individuals is suggested. The method has potential to greatly expand the possibilities of this highly informative, risk free, and easily obtained 3D tool for the assessment of facial changes in growing individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Mandibular advancement devices (MADs) are the main therapeutic alternative to continuous positive airway pressure for obstructive sleep apnea. Our aim was to evaluate the long-term dentoskeletal side effects of MADs and to identify the predictive factors for these side effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients from the Pays de la Loire cohort treated with a custom-made MAD for at least 1 year were included in this retrospective study. Digital cephalometric analyses were performed at baseline and at follow-up. RESULTS We included a total of 117 patients, treated with a MAD for a median [interquartile range] of 4.6 [2.6-6.6] years. The main significant side effects were a decrease in overbite (- 0.5 ± 1 mm), overjet (- 0.7 ± 1 mm) and maxillary incisor inclination (- 2.5 ± 2.8°) and an increase in mandibular incisor inclination (+ 2.2 ± 2.7°). Subjective side effects were not linked to the observed dentoskeletal changes. Current smokers were at higher risk of overjet modifications. A pre-existing anterior open-bite was associated with a greater decrease in overbite. Treatment duration was associated with a more pronounced mandibular incisor proclination. Propulsion was negatively associated with maxillary incisor retroclination. CONCLUSIONS Long-term dentoskeletal side effects were mainly moderate dental side effects. Some predictive factors were shown to be associated with more pronounced changes. Subjective side effects did not appear to be reliable tools to detect dentoskeletal side effects. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Regular follow-up with clinical examination and regular radiographs is mandatory. The predictive factors could be of interest for a better selection of patients and to individualize follow-up.

Abstract
To assess the craniofacial changes related to growth and/or to orthodontic and orthognathic treatments, it is necessary to superimpose serial radiographs on stable structures. However, conventional superimposition provides only a graphical illustration of these changes. To increase the precision of growth and treatment evaluations, it is desirable to quantitate these craniofacial changes. The aims of this study were to (1) evaluate a superimposition-based cephalometric method to process numerical data for craniofacial growth changes and (2) identify a valid, reliable, and feasible method for superimposition. Forty pairs of cephalograms were analyzed at T1 and T2 (mean age 9.9 and 15.0 years, respectively). The superimposition-based cephalometric method involved relating the sagittal and vertical measurements on the T2 radiographs to the nasion and sella landmarks on the T1 radiographs. Validity and reliability were evaluated for three superimposition methods: the sella-nasion (SN); the tuberculum sella-wing (TW); and Björk’s structural. Superimposition-based cephalometrics can be used to quantify craniofacial changes digitally. The numerical data from the superimposition-based cephalometrics reflected a graphical illustration of superimposition and differed significantly from the data acquired through conventional cephalometrics. Superimposition using the TW method is recommended as it is valid, reliable, and feasible.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the reproducibility of a voxel-based 3-dimensional superimposition method and the effect of segmentation error on determining soft tissue surface changes. METHODS A total of 15 pairs of serial cone-beam computed tomography images (interval: 1.69 ± 0.37 years) from growing subjects (initial age: 11.75 ± 0.59 years) were selected from an existing digital database. Each pair was superimposed on the anterior cranial base, in 3 dimensions with Dolphin 3D software (version 2.1.6079.17633; Dolphin Imaging & Management Solutions, Chatsworth, Calif). The reproducibility of superimposition outcomes and surface segmentation were tested with intra- and interoperator comparisons. RESULTS Median differences in inter- and intrarater measurements at various areas presented a range of 0.08-0.21 mm. In few instances, the differences were larger than 0.5 mm. In areas where T0-T1 changes were increased, the error did not appear to increase. However, the method error increased the farther the measurement area was from the superimposition reference structure. For individual images, the median soft tissue segmentation error ranged from 0.05 to 0.06 at various areas and in no subject exceeded 0.13 mm. CONCLUSIONS The presented voxel-based superimposition method was efficient and well reproducible. The segmentation process was a minimal source of error; however, there were a few cases in which the total error was more than 0.5 mm and could be considered clinically significant. Therefore, this method can be used clinically to assess 3-dimensional soft tissue changes during orthodontic treatment in growing patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies have highlighted differences in the facial features in a White European population. Genetics appear to have a major influence on normal facial variation, and environmental factors are likely to have minor influences on face shape directly or through epigenetic mechanisms. AIM The aim of this longitudinal cohort study is to determine the rate of change in midline facial landmarks in three distinct homogenous population groups (Finnish, Latvian, and Welsh) from 12.8 to 15.3 years of age. This age range covers the pubertal growth period for the majority of boys and girls. METHODS A cohort of children aged 12 were monitored for facial growth in three countries [Finland (n = 60), Latvia (n = 107), and Wales (n = 96)]. Three-dimensional facial surface images were acquired (using either laser or photogrammetric methods) at regular intervals (6-12 months) for 4 years. Ethical approval was granted in each country. Nine midline landmarks were identified and the relative spatial positions of these surface landmarks were measured relative to the mid-endocanthion (men) over a 4-year period. RESULTS This study reports the children who attended 95 per cent of all scanning sessions (Finland 48 out of 60; Latvia 104 out of 107; Wales 50 out of 96). Considerable facial variation is seen for all countries and sexes. There are clear patterns of growth that show different magnitudes at different age groups for the different country groups, sexes, and facial parameters. The greatest single yearly growth rate (5.4 mm) was seen for Welsh males for men-pogonion distance at 13.6 years of age. Males exhibit greater rates of growth compared to females. These variations in magnitude and timings are likely to be influenced by genetic ancestry as a result of population migration. CONCLUSION The midline points are a simple and valid method to assess the relative spatial positions of facial surface landmarks. This study confirms previous reports on the subtle differences in facial shapes and sizes of male and female children in different populations and also highlights the magnitudes and timings of growth for various midline landmark distances to the men point.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biallelic mutations in the non-coding RNA gene RMRP cause Cartilage-hair hypoplasia (CHH), a rare skeletal dysplasia in which the main phenotypic characteristic is severe progressive growth retardation. OBJECTIVE This study compared the cranial dimensions of individuals with CHH to healthy subjects. METHODS Lateral skull radiographs of 17 patients with CHH (age range 10 to 59 years) and 34 healthy individuals (age range 10 to 54 years) were analyzed for relative position of the jaws to skull base, craniofacial height and depth, as well as vertical growth pattern of the lower jaw, anterior cranial base angle, and the relationship between the cervical spine and skull base. RESULTS We found that the length of the upper and lower jaws, and clivus were significantly decreased in patients with CHH as compared to the controls. Anterior cranial base angle was large in patients with CHH. Basilar invagination was not found. CONCLUSION This study found no severe craniofacial involvement of patients with CHH, except for the short jaws. Unexpectedly, mandibular deficiency did not lead to skeletal class II malocclusion. CLINICAL IMPACT Although the jaws were shorter in patients with CHH, they were proportional to each other. A short posterior cranial base was not associated with craniocervical junction pathology.

Abstract
Objective In the cephalometric analyses, it is observed that both SNA and SNB angles are higher or lower than normal for some skeletal Class I patients. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between low or high SNA, SNB angles, and anterior cranial base (ACB) slope. Methods One hundred and seventeen skeletal Class I patients (45 males with a mean age of 14.5 years, 72 females with a mean age of 14.4 years) were evaluated in three groups. Group 1(n=40): Control group, individuals with normal SNA(82°±2°), and SNB(80°±2°) values. Group 2 (n=37): Patients with SNA>84° and SNB >82°, Group 3 (n=40): Patients with both SNA and SNB values lower than 78°. On the cephalometric radiographs, three angulars (SN/FH; anterior cranial base, Ba-S/FH; posterior cranial base, SN-Ba; total cranial base) and seven linear (S-FH, N-FH, Δ, Ba-S, Ba-N, Ba-A, Ba-B) measurements were performed to analyze the vertical and horizontal positions of the S and N points and thereby the ACB slope. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests were used for statistical analysis. Results The ACB slope was observed to be relatively flatter in Group 2, and steeper in Group 3 (p<0.05). The location of the S and N points in the sagittal plane did not significantly affect the SNA and SNB. However, the vertical position of the S and N points was a factor determining the inclination of the ACB, therefore the SNA and SNB. Conclusion ACB slope directly affected SNA and SNB measurements. ACB might lead to misleading results when used as a reference plane.

Abstract
Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to compare cranial base angulations in subjects with high-angle, low-angle, and normal-angle vertical growth patterns using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Design This study is a retrospective clinical research.
Settings This study was carried out at the Dentistry Faculty of Eskisehir Osmangazi University.
Participants According to skeletal vertical face growth patterns, 78 subjects (48 females and 30 males, average age: 13.19 ± 1.73 years) were divided equally into three groups: high angle, low angle, and normal angle groups.
Main Outcome Measures Cephalometric images were derived from CBCT, and patients were classified according to the SN-GoGn angle (sella-nasion, gonion gnathion angle). Sagittal, axial, and coronal cranial base angulations were measured in three-dimensional (3D) CBCT images. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality, Kruskal–Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U statistical tests.
Results There were statistically significant differences between the low-angle and high-angle groups according to sagittal cranial base angulation parameters (p = 0.01). Conversely, there were no statistically significant differences between vertical facial growth patterns according to coronal and axial cranial angle variables (p > 0.05).
Conclusion According to the study results, there were no effects of cranial base angulations in two planes (coronal and axial) on different vertical skeletal growth patterns. In the sagittal cranial base angulation parameter, the high-angle group showed greater angulation values than the low-angle group. CBCT may be helpful for evaluating, diagnosing, and predicting 3D cranial base differences.

Abstract
Background So far, several techniques have been recommended for the assessment of craniofacial changes through skeletal tissue superimposition, but the evidence that supports them remains unexplored. The purpose of the present study is to assess the available literature on skeletal-tissue superimpositions of serial craniofacial CT or CBCT images used to detect morphological changes. Materials and Methods Medline (via Pubmed), EMBASE, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Open Grey and Grey Literature Report were searched (last search: 17.11.2019) using specific terms that fulfilled the requirements of each database in the context of the study aim. Hand searches were also performed. The outcomes of interest were the accuracy, precision, or agreement between skeletal-tissue superimposition techniques to assess changes in the morphology of craniofacial structures. Studies of any design with sample size ≥3 were assessed by two authors independently. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42019143356). Results Out of 832 studies, fifteen met the eligibility criteria. From the 15 included studies, 12 have shown high total risk of bias, one low risk of bias, and two studies have shown unclear risk of bias. Thirteen out of the 15 studies showed high applicability concerns, two unclear and no study had low applicability concerns. There was high heterogeneity among studies regarding the type of participants, sample size, growth status, machines, acquisition parameters, superimposition techniques, assessment techniques and outcomes measured. Fourteen of them were performed on Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and one on Computed Tomography (CT) derived 3D models. Most of the studies (eleven) used voxel-based registration, one landmark-based registration and three studies compared different registration techniques, which include the surface-based registration. Concerning the area of interest, nine studies focused on the anterior cranial base and certain facial structures, four on maxillary structures and four on mandibular structures. Non-growing participants were included in six studies, growing in eight, whereas one study had both. Conclusion Most of the available studies had methodological shortcomings and high applicability concerns. At the moment, certain voxel-based and surface-based superimpositions seem to work properly and to be superior to landmark-based superimposition. However, further research in the field is required to develop and properly validate these techniques on different samples, through high quality studies with low applicability concerns.

Abstract
The use of a single grey intensity threshold is one of the most straightforward and widely used methods to segment cranial base surface models from a 3D radiographic volume. In this study we used thirty Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) scans from three different machines and ten CT scans of growing individuals to test the effect of thresholding on the subsequently produced anterior cranial base surface models. From each scan, six surface models were generated using a range of voxel intensity thresholds. The models were then superimposed on a manually selected reference surface model, using an iterative closest point algorithm. Multivariate tests showed significant effects of the machine type, threshold value, and superimposition on the spatial position and the form of the created models. For both, CT and CBCT machines, the distance between the models, as well as the variation within each threshold category, was consistently increasing with the magnitude of difference between thresholds. The present findings highlight the importance of accurate anterior cranial base segmentation for reliable assessment of craniofacial morphology through surface superimposition or similar methods that utilize this anatomical structure as reference.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine long-term skeletal and dental changes in tooth-anchored versus Dresden bone-anchored rapid maxillary expansion using CBCT images in adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS In all, 29 adolescent patients (11-17 years of age) needing skeletal expansion were randomly allocated to two different groups treated by either a Dresden bone-anchored expander or a conventional hyrax expander. Patients included did not have previous orthodontic treatment, were non-syndromic and had all teeth present in mouth. CBCT images were taken before expansion and two or more years after expansion. An independent T-test was used to determine the statistical significance between treatment groups and paired T-test was used to compare the results before and after expansion in each group. RESULTS Neither treatment group showed overall long-term different skeletal and dental changes in the transverse, anterior-posterior and vertical planes (P<0.05). Both treatment groups showed mild asymmetric skeletal expansion, but these were clinically insignificant. CONCLUSIONS Both expanders had similar skeletal and dental results. The greatest changes were in the transverse plane. Changes in vertical and anterior-posterior were negligible.

Abstract
Background and aims In 1976, Coenraad F.A. Moorrees completed a series of facial mesh diagrams to ease the orthodontic diagnosis and treatment of North-American patients. Subsequently, the system was adapted by different authors to other races and populations. The objective of this study is to provide a system of Moorrees-like mesh diagrams for the Romanian population, Caucasian race, which would help orthodontists, surgeons and prosthetists. Methods 40 patients were introduced in the study, 20 males and 20 females, with ages between 12–33 years, permanent dentition and slight dental-maxillary abnormalities, class I and II Angle. For each patient, a lateral cephalometric radiograph was taken, with CRANEX 3D, head straight, maximum intercuspation. On tracing paper were drawn 35 anthropometric points and 3 planes, Frankfurt plane, as the horizontal landmark, a perpendicular line through nasion as the vertical landmark and the occlusal plane. From each point we measured the distance in millimeters to the horizontal landmark and to the vertical landmark, respectively. The obtained values were introduced into 40 tables, using Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and 3 arithmetic means were calculated, for males, for females and a general one, for children under 12 years old. The arithmetic means were transferred on millimetric paper and tracing paper, joining the obtained points and completing the templates. Results Three different Moorrees-like mesh diagrams were obtained, one for male, one for female and a mixt one for children under 12 years, Romanian patients, Caucasian race, respectively. Conclusions Mesh diagram comes in the support of a better perspective of the anatomical elements of the face and the facial growth, being a useful tool in predicting treatment. Computer based programs with Moorrees-like diagrams adapted to Romanian patients may be the object of further studies.

Abstract
PURPOSES The main purpose of this study was to assess the measurements and shape of the sella turcica by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to associate the data to skeletal class II and class III patients, including correlations with gender, age and measurements of the anterior cranial base. MATERIAL AND METHODS A trained examiner specialist in dental radiology selected and evaluated randomly 95 CBCT images of pre-orthognathic surgery patients, 60 (63.2%) being female and 35 (36.8%) male with age between 16 and 57 years. All images were evaluated to determine the size, shape and volume of the sella turcica. The anterior cranial base, represented by the S-N line (sella-nasion), was also measured. RESULTS Of these 95 patients, 48 (50.5%) had class III facial skeletal pattern, whereas 47 (49.5%) had class II. No statistically significant differences were found between class II and class III patients in the measurements and shape of the sella turcica (P > 0.05). The diameter and volume of the sella turcica had higher values in female patients, whereas the measurements of the anterior cranial base were higher in males (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Therefore, one can conclude that measurements of the sella turcica are not reliable parameters to evaluate whether a class II or class III patient will or will not need orthognathic surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the relationship between traditional cephalometric measurements and corresponding nonradiographic three-dimensional (3D) photogrammetry measurements. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 20 orthodontic patients (10 male and 10 female) who received lateral cephalometric radiographs and 3D dentofacial photogrammetric records with each subject serving as his or her own control for a total sample size of 40 images (20 per method). A 3D analysis that resembled a traditional cephalometric analysis was established using the eyes and natural head orientation as substitutes for the cranial base. Pearson correlation coefficients and multivariable linear regression plots were calculated to evaluate the relationship between the photogrammetry measurements and the cephalometric measurements. RESULTS The ANB angle, mandibular plane angle, lower anterior face height, upper incisor angle to SN, upper incisor angle to NA, and all measurements of lower incisor position and inclination had strong positive Pearson correlation coefficients with the corresponding 3D photogrammetry measurements ( P < .004). Statistically significant regression plots demonstrated that cephalometric relationships between the jaws and incisor orientation can be predicted from corresponding 3D photogrammetry measurements. CONCLUSIONS 3D photogrammetry measurements relating the jaws to each other and incisor orientation has a strong positive correlation with corresponding traditional cephalometric measurements and can serve as cephalometric predictors. Capturing the eyes using 3D photogrammetry can obviate the need to expose the cranial base and allow limiting the radiographic field to the area of interest.

INTRODUCTION This study evaluated and compared the completeness of reporting of abstracts of orthodontics systematic reviews before and after the publication of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for Abstracts Checklist (PRISMA-A). METHODS Abstracts of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in orthodontics published in PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews databases before March 23, 2018, that met the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, were evaluated using the 12 items of PRISMA-A, scoring each item from 0 to 2. Abstracts were classified into 2 groups: before and after publication of the PRISMA-A checklist. Three calibrated evaluators (intraclass correlation coefficient and kappa > 0.8) assessed the scores for compliance with the checklist. The number of authors, country of affiliation of the first author, performance of meta-analysis, and topic of the article were recorded. A regression analysis was performed to assess the associations between abstract characteristics and the PRISMA-A scores. RESULTS Of 1034 abstracts evaluated, 389 were included in the analysis. The mean PRISMA-A score was 53.39 (95% CI, 51.83-54.96). The overall score for studies published after the publication of the checklist was significantly higher than for studies published before (P ≤ 0.0001). The components returning significantly higher scores after publication of PRISMA-A were title (P = 0.024), information from databases (P = 0.026), risk of bias (P ≤ 0.0001), included studies (P ≤ 0.0001), synthesis of results (P ≤ 0.0001), interpretation of results (P = 0.035), financing and conflict of interest (P ≤ 0.0001), and registration (P ≤ 0.0001). These results showed the positive effect of PRISMA-A had on the quality of reporting of orthodontics systematic reviews. Nevertheless, the poor adherence revealed that there is still need for improvement in the quality of abstract reporting. CONCLUSIONS The quality of reporting of abstracts of orthodontic systematic reviews and meta-analyses increased after the introduction of PRISMA-A.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To test the reliability and reproducibility of a fast and user-friendly voxel-based 3D superimposition method and the effect of bone segmentation on its outcomes. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION This prospective methodological study assessed 15 pairs of pre-existing serial CBCT images (interval: 1.69 ± 0.37 years) obtained from growing patients (initial age: 11.75 ± 0.59 years). MATERIALS AND METHODS Volumes were superimposed on the anterior cranial base using Dolphin 3D software. Reliability was assessed visually, by inspecting the overlap of the superimposition reference structures. Reproducibility was tested with intra- and inter-operator comparisons of superimposition outcomes. RESULTS The method presented good reliability in all cases. The median differences between intra- and inter-operator comparisons at various tested areas ranged from 0.06 to 0.16 mm and from 0.15 to 0.24 mm, respectively. In few individual cases, differences exceeded 0.5 mm. There was no evidence that the error increased upon increase in the magnitude of the detected T0-T1 changes. However, the superimposition error increased when the distance between the measurement area and the superimposition reference also increased. For a single image, the median error of bone surface segmentation ranged in different areas between 0.05 and 0.12 mm, with few exceptions where it slightly exceeded 0.25 mm. CONCLUSIONS The tested voxel-based superimposition method presented good efficiency, cranial base matching and reproducibility in a growing patient sample. Segmentation error was considered minimal. The total error reached clinically relevant levels in very few cases. Thus, this technique is considered appropriate for clinical use, when 3D assessment of craniofacial changes is required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE (a) To evaluate intra- and inter-observer reliability in landmarks placement along the three planes of space on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data sets; (b) To evaluate whether the reliability of each landmark differs in CBCT scans characterized by two different voxel dimension and quality. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION A total of 84 scans were used in this study: 49 scans were taken with the NewTom 3G, and 35 scans were taken with the NewTom 5G. The scans were characterized by an isotropic voxel dimension of 0.36 and 0.30 mm for the NewTom 3G and the NewTom 5G, respectively. METHODS A total of 13 landmarks were placed according to the corresponding definitions in 3D, also presented in this study: Foramen Spinosum (R/L), Nasion, Sella, Gonion (R/L), Pogonion, Menton, A point, Anterior nasal spine, Posterior nasal spine, Basion, Cribriform Plate (CR). Intra- and inter-observer reliability and Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) ICC for landmarks identification were assessed. Five reference and registration planes based on the above-mentioned landmarks were also presented. RESULTS ICC both for the intra- and inter-observer measurements had a score larger than 0.9 in all directions, except in the sagittal direction for CR. Regarding intra- and inter-observer reliability, only N, S, and Ba scored well in all directions. CONCLUSIONS Most of the landmarks analysed displayed a high reliability along at least 2 directions. The choice of landmarks to define registration and superimposition planes must be carefully selected, as the reliability of these planes is inherited from the one of the landmarks defining them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to (a) evaluate the stability of the parietal bone of 6-9 months old beagles and (b) examine whether parietal regional superimposition can provide an atraumatic and effective solution for further maxillary expansion study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six prepubertal 6-month-old male beagles were included. Six miniscrew markers were inserted into the left and right sides of the parietal bone, and two of them were placed bilaterally near the palatal suture. The subjects were scanned with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) at three time points of T0 (6 months old), T1 (7.5 months old) and T2 (9 months old), respectively. All skull models were analyzed by both the miniscrew superimposition and the parietal regional superimposition. RESULTS The two superimposition methods had no significant difference (p > 0.05) in displacements of miniscrew markers between left and right first premolars (PM1). The maxillary superimposition between T0 and T2 indicated that the length and width of the maxillary as well as the width of the zygoma root increased significantly (p < 0.05), while the height of maxillary had no significant difference (p > 0.05) over the 3 months. CONCLUSIONS The parietal bone is relatively stable for beagles from 6 months old to 9 months old and thus can be used as a reference region for 3D skull model superimposition of the beagle dog.

Abstract
This systematic review assessed the literature to evaluate the efficiency of polymerization of bulk-fill composite resins at 4 mm restoration depth. PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched with no restrictions on year, publication status, or article's language. Selection criteria included studies that evaluated bulk-fill composite resin when inserted in a minimum thickness of 4 mm, followed by curing according to the manufacturers' instructions; presented sound statistical data; and comparison with a control group and/or a reference measurement of quality of polymerization. The evidence level was evaluated by qualitative scoring system and classified as high-, moderate- and low- evidence level. A total of 534 articles were retrieved in the initial search. After the review process, only 10 full-text articles met the inclusion criteria. Most articles included (80%) were classified as high evidence level. Among several techniques, microhardness was the most frequently method performed by the studies included in this systematic review. Irrespective to the "in vitro" method performed, bulk fill RBCs were partially likely to fulfill the important requirement regarding properly curing in 4 mm of cavity depth measured by depth of cure and / or degree of conversion. In general, low viscosities BFCs performed better regarding polymerization efficiency compared to the high viscosities BFCs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a synthesis of the published studies evaluating the natural growth and development of the human posterior cranial base (S-Ba). MATERIALS AND METHODS The search was performed on MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and all EBM Reviews electronic databases. In addition, reference lists of the included studies were hand-searched. Articles were included if they analyzed posterior cranial-base growth in humans specifically. Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were completed in duplicate. A meta-analysis was not justified. RESULTS Finally, 23 published studies were selected: 5 cross-sectional and 18 cohort studies. Articles were published between 1955 and 2015, and all were published in English. The sample sizes varied between 20 and 397 individuals and consisted of craniofacial measurements from either living or deceased human skulls. Validity of the measurements was not determined in any of the studies, while six papers reported some form of reliability assessment. All the articles included multiple time points within the same population or data from multiple age groups. Growth of S-Ba was generally agreed to be from spheno-occipital synchondrosis growth. Basion displaced downward and backward and sella turcica moved downward and backward during craniofacial growth. Timing of cessation of S-Ba growth was not conclusive due to limited identified evidence. CONCLUSIONS Current evidence suggests that S-Ba is not totally stable, as its dimensions change throughout craniofacial growth and a minor dimensional change is observed even in late adulthood.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Initially, cone-beam computed tomography images from dry skulls were used to 3 dimensionally evaluate intrarater and interrater reliabilities and accuracy of selected 3-dimensional landmarks located in the anterior and middle cranial bases. Thereafter, dimensional changes of the anterior and middle cranial bases with growth were evaluated by using the previously selected landmarks. METHODS Cone-beam computed tomography images of 10 dry skulls were used to identify useful landmarks from different areas of the anterior and middle cranial bases based on their reliability and accuracy. These selected landmarks were identified in the images of an already available sample of adolescents (n = 60) taken at 2 time points (19 months apart) to assess dimensional changes with growth. RESULTS The majority of the proposed 3-dimensional landmarks with the exception of the lesser wing of the sphenoid showed acceptable intrarater and interrater reliabilities. The distances measured between foramina and canals in the transverse dimension showed evidence of increases in size. However, the mean amounts of increase in these transverse distances were equal to or less than 1.05 mm (from 1.1% to 4.1%). No change was observed between the right and left anterior and posterior clinoid processes. The vertical dimensions showed evidence of some changes, but these were within 2% of the original distances. CONCLUSIONS In this adolescent sample, minor growth-related changes were observed in the anterior and middle cranial bases. The midsagittal area of the anterior cranial base (foramen caecum to presphenoid) was stable. The right and left anterior and posterior clinoid processes can be used for transverse superimposition.

Abstract
Background To evaluate the role of craniofacial shape in malocclusion by application of geometric morphometrics to a set of two-dimensional landmarks and semilandmarks obtained from lateral skull radiographs. Methods Cephalometric radiograph tracings of 88 untreated Caucasians (age range 7–39 years) were assigned to four groups according to their occlusion: neutrocclusion, distocclusion, mesiocclusion, and anterior open bite. The geometric morphometric shape analysis incorporated 66 landmarks and semilandmarks, which underwent generalized Procrustes analysis, between-groups principal component analysis, thin-plate spline deformation grid visualization, permutation tests, and receiver operating characteristic curves. Results The position and shape of the mandible contributed to differences between the distocclusion and mesiocclusion groups, whereas the maxillary shape showed less variation. The growth-related shape alteration during adolescence was most pronounced in the mesiocclusion group and least pronounced in the neutrocclusion group. The open bite group was associated with an altered orientation of the mandibular body and the maxilla, showed the most hyperdivergent maxillomandibular pattern but was not an own skeletal entity. Despite clear differences in mean shape across the four groups, the individual distribution of craniofacial shape overlapped between the groups without discrete clusters. Conclusions Craniofacial shape was clearly associated with dental malocclusion and showed considerable variation. Geometric morphometrics was a powerful research tool but for diagnosing individual malocclusion standard cephalometric measurements including overjet and overbite were equally or more efficient than geometric morphometric descriptors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this systematic review, we assessed the literature to determine which evidence level supports the association of orthodontic force system and root resorption. METHODS PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases were searched with no restrictions on year, publication status, or language. Selection criteria included human studies conducted with fixed orthodontic appliances or aligners, with at least 10 patients and the force system well described. RESULTS A total of 259 articles were retrieved in the initial search. After the review process, 21 full-text articles met the inclusion criteria. Sample sizes ranged from 10 to 73 patients. Most articles were classified as having high evidence levels and low risks of bias. CONCLUSIONS Although a meta-analysis was not performed, from the available literature, it seems that positive correlations exist between increased force levels and increased root resorption, as well as between increased treatment time and increased root resorption. Moreover, a pause in tooth movement seems to be beneficial in reducing root resorption because it allows the resorbed cementum to heal. The absence of a control group, selection criteria of patients, and adequate examinations before and after treatment are the most common methodology flaws.
