A comparative study of health locus of control in patients with schizophrenia and their first degree relatives

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the recovery locus of control (RLOC) Scale among patients with myocardial infarction

Aim

To translate the RLOC Scale into Chinese and test its psychometric properties in the Chinese patients with myocardial infarction (MI).

Design

A cross‐sectional design was used.

Methods

A convenience sample of 233 patients with MI who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention and were ready for discharge were recruited in a level A tertiary hospital of Shandong Province from January 2019 to April 2019. Data were analysed using item analysis, internal consistency reliability and exploratory factor analysis.

Results

Two factors—external RLOC and internal RLOC—were extracted, accounting for 70.5% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha for the Chinese version of RLOC Scale was 0.80 and for the two factors was 0.92 and 0.76, respectively. The Chinese version of RLOC Scale showed satisfactory reliability and validity, which can be used to measure the ability of recovery locus of control in Chinese patients with MI.

Turkish validity and reliability of Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale Form A

AIM

The aim of this study was to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale Form A.

METHODS

The research is a methodological instrument validation study, and the study sample consisted of 275 participants. The data collection phase of the study was completed between 15 July and 15 September 2016. The study used data collection tools including a Personal Information Form, the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale Form A, and the Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. Data on sociodemographic variables are presented as percentages and means. Confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analyses were used.

RESULTS

The Cronbach α values of the subdimensions of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale Form A were determined as acceptable for the internal control, the chance, and powerful other subscales. The confirmatory factor analysis showed acceptable values and acceptable fit for the model fit statistics.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish version of Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale Form A was accepted as valid and reliable.

Healthy lifestyle behavior and personal control in people with schizophrenia with healthy controls: A cross-sectional comparative study

The aim of the article was to compare persons with schizophrenia and healthy controls about their life style on their physical health and personal control. Evidences highlights that it helps to change risk behaviours associated with co morbid physical health problems. Subjects were recruited from adult mental health services in tertiary level psychiatric center.Comparisons between the groups were done by using the lifestyle and personal control questionnaire. Subjects were 86 with schizophrenia, 72 were healthy controls. Results showed significant difference. However, physical health was considered to be a less important priority in their personal life by persons with schizophrenia.

Pattern and Predictors of Hospital Readmission During the First Year After Lung Transplantation

Hospital readmission after lung transplantation negatively affects quality of life and resource utilization. A secondary analysis of data collected prospectively was conducted to identify the pattern of (incidence, count, cumulative duration), reasons for and predictors of readmission for 201 lung transplant recipients (LTRs) assessed at 2, 6, and 12 mo after discharge. The majority of LTRs (83.6%) were readmitted, and 64.2% had multiple readmissions. The median cumulative readmission duration was 19 days. The main reasons for readmission were other than infection or rejection (55.5%), infection only (25.4%), rejection only (9.9%), and infection and rejection (0.7%). LTRs who required reintubation (odds ratio [OR] 1.92; p = 0.008) or were discharged to care facilities (OR 2.78; p = 0.008) were at higher risk for readmission, with a 95.7% cumulative incidence of readmission at 12 mo. Thirty-day readmission (40.8%) was not significantly predicted by baseline characteristics. Predictors of higher readmission count were lower capacity to engage in self-care (incidence rate ratio [IRR] 0.99; p = 0.03) and discharge to care facilities (IRR 1.45; p = 0.01). Predictors of longer cumulative readmission duration were older age (arithmetic mean ratio [AMR] 1.02; p = 0.009), return to the intensive care unit (AMR 2.00; p = 0.01) and lower capacity to engage in self-care (AMR 0.99; p = 0.03). Identifying LTRs at risk may assist in optimizing predischarge care, discharge planning and long-term follow-up.

Health locus of control as manifested in individuals attending a state-run medical dispensary in northern India

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the health locus of control (HLOC) beliefs of patients and visitors at a free, state-run medical clinic in Faridabad, India, in order to establish a norm for this population and to explore potential associations between the different categories of causal health beliefs.

DESIGN

Participants (110 men, 96 women) were interviewed in Hindi and asked a shortened version of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale assessing both internal HLOC and three aspects of external HLOC (chance, powerful others, and God). Additional variables of interest included a Traditional Values Scale, a measure of spirituality, an assessment of health status, and demographic information including gender, age, employment status, and religion.

RESULTS

Participants rated the external-God factor as a stronger determinant of their health than the internal or other external HLOC factors. Internal HLOC was positively correlated with external HLOC in terms of chance and the role of powerful others and these associations were strongest for the most interdependent participants (i.e. women and the unemployed).

CONCLUSIONS

For patients and visitors at the Faridabad clinic, religion played a significant role in their causal health beliefs. In addition, internal HLOC was positively associated with aspects of external locus of control, suggesting that causal health beliefs were viewed in a holistic, integrated fashion. Interventions based on these findings are suggested.

Treating symptoms or assisting human development: Can different environmental conditions affect personal development for patients with severe mental illness? A qualitative study

Background

Recent research suggests that a basic anomaly in self-experience may be a core factor in patients with severe mental illnesses. Given the importance of sense of self, the traditional treatment of symptoms might not be the most effective for these groups of patients. This qualitative study examines how differences in social environmental conditions, organized as education or treatment, might affect personal development in patients with severe mental illness.

Methods

A qualitative hermeneutical design was used. Data were collected through qualitative interviews. Informants included 14 patients in psychiatric treatment and 15 students at schools for adults with mental illness. Most informants were interviewed on two occasions, 6–8 months apart, totaling 47 interviews. All participants had been diagnosed with severe mental illness with pronounced impact on daily functioning (most often psychoses or personality disorders) for a minimum of 2 years.

Results

Findings and interpretations showed that the students experienced a supportive environment focused mostly on education. They described personal and enduring development in areas such as capacity for relationships, regulation of symptoms, subjective well-being, and integration in society. The patients experienced an environment focused more on treatment of their illness and less on personal development and interests. They described little development, much loneliness, a poor quality of life, an objectifying attitude of themselves and others, and hopelessness.

Conclusions

Even if more research is needed, findings indicate that for this group of patients, problems may be closely related to identity development. Therefore, instead of solemnly focusing on specific symptoms, it might be more effective to support patients’ personal and social development by offering intensive and lasting social environmental conditions. This includes stable and mutual relationships, intrinsically motivated activities, and an environment that supports personal choices, acceptance, and development.
