Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the neuropsychiatric symptoms of quarantined COVID-19 survivors 15 months after discharge and explore its potential association with structural and functional brain changes and inflammation. METHODS A total of 51 quarantined COVID-19 survivors and 74 healthy controls were included in this study. Cognitive function was assessed using the THINC-integrated tool. Structural brain changes were examined through both surface- and volume-based analyses, and functional changes were assessed using resting-state amplitude low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). Serum inflammatory markers were measured by a multiplexed flow cytometric assay. RESULTS COVID-19 survivors exhibited subjective cognitive decline compared to healthy controls, despite no significant differences in objective cognitive tasks. Structural analysis revealed significantly increased gray matter volume and cortical surface area in the left transverse temporal gyrus (Heschl's gyrus) in quarantined COVID-19 survivors. This enlargement was negatively correlated with cognitive impairment. The ALFF analysis showed decreased neural activity in multiple brain regions. Elevated levels of serum inflammatory markers were also found in COVID-19 survivors, including MIP-1a, MIP-1b, TNF-a, and IL-8, which correlated with functional abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate a subjective cognitive decline in quarantined COVID-19 survivors 15 months after discharge, which is associated with brain structural alterations in the left Heschl's gyrus. The observed elevation of inflammatory markers suggests a potential mechanism involving inflammation-induced neurogenesis. These results contribute to our understanding of the possible mechanisms underlying long-term neuropsychiatric consequences of COVID-19 and highlight the need for further research to develop targeted interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is known to affect vessels and nerves and can be easily visualized in the retina. However, the effect of SARS-CoV-2 on retinal morphology remains controversial. In the present research, we applied Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to estimate the association between SARS-CoV-2 and changes in the thickness of the inner retina. METHODS Two-sample MR analysis was conducted using summary-level data from 3 open genome-wide association study databases concerning COVID-19 infection (2,942,817 participants) and COVID-19 hospitalization (2,401,372 participants); moreover, the dataset of inner retina thickness, including the macular retinal nerve fiber layer (mRNFL) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), included 31,434 optical coherence tomography (OCT) images derived from healthy UK Biobank participants. All the participants were of European ancestry. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) meta-analysis was used as our primary method. Various complementary MR approaches were established to provide robust causal estimates under different assumptions. RESULTS According to our MR analysis, genetically predicted COVID-19 infection was associated with an increased risk of mRNFL and mGCIPL thickness (OR = 1.74, 95% CI 1.20-2.52, P = 3.58 × 10-3; OR = 2.43, 95% CI 1.49-3.96, P = 3.6 × 10-4). The other MR methods produced consistent results. However, genetically predicted COVID-19 hospitalization did not affect the thickness of the inner retina (OR = 1.11, 95% CI 0.90-1.37, P = 0.32; OR = 1.28, 95% CI 0.88-1.85, P = 0.19). CONCLUSION This work provides the first genetically predictive causal evidence between COVID-19 infection and inner retinal thickness in a European population. These findings will contribute to further understanding of the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and stimulate improvements in treatment modalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can invade both the peripheral and central nervous systems and impact the function of the brain. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the mutual influences between COVID-19 outcomes and childhood mental disorders. METHODS We examined genetic correlations and potential causalities between three childhood mental disorders and three COVID-19 phenotypes by genetically proxied analyses. The three mental disorders included attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, N = 292,548), Tourette's syndrome (TS, N = 14,307), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD, N = 46,350). The three COVID-19 traits included SARS-CoV-2 infection (N = 2,597,856), hospitalized COVID-19 (N = 2,095,324), and critical COVID-19 (N = 1,086,211). Literature-based analysis was used to build gene-based pathways connecting ADHD and COVID-19. RESULTS ADHD was positively correlated with the three COVID-19 outcomes (Rg: 0.22 ~ 0.30). Our Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses found that ADHD confers a causal effect on hospitalized COVID-19 (odds ratio (OR): 1.36, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10-1.69). TS confers a causal effect on critical COVID-19 (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.04-1.25). Genetic liability to the COVID-19 outcomes may not increase the risk for the childhood mental disorders. Pathway analysis identified several immunity-related genes that may link ADHD to COVID-19, including CRP, OXT, IL6, PON1, AR, TNFSF12, and IL10. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that both ADHD and TS may augment the severity of COVID-19 through immunity-related pathways. However, our results did not support a causal role of COVID-19 in the risk for the childhood mental disorders.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused substantial disruptions in the lives of higher education students, with detrimental repercussions for academic performance and overall mental health. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among Portuguese higher education students during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and investigate DASS-21's psychometric characteristics and whether it functions effectively during a pandemic. A convenience sampling procedure was used to recruit 1522 participants (75.1% women and 79.2% undergraduate students) for this cross-sectional research. Participants completed an e-survey created using DASS-21. The results revealed a considerable prevalence of symptoms of depression [≥10] (N = 434, 28.5%), anxiety [≥7] (N = 551, 36.2%), and stress [≥11] (N = 544, 35.7%). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) revealed the scale's three-factor structure, which matched the three DASS-21 subscales. Subsequently, the heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT) correlation ratio evaluated the scale's discriminant validity, which was relatively good. Cronbach's alpha measured the internal consistency of the DASS subscales, which was excellent (Cronbach's α > 0.90). DASS-21 was shown to be a reliable and appropriate measure for assessing students' mental health. Furthermore, DASS-21 is recommended for use by academics and healthcare professionals in measuring students' psychological distress. Further validation studies of this scale are needed with larger and more representative samples.

Abstract
Objective Although observational and genetic studies have indicated a correlation between OA and COVID-19, it remains uncertain whether osteoarthritis (OA) contributes to the severity of COVID-19. Here, we aimed to investigate the potential causal links between the two. Methods In this study, we conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate whether there is a potential causal connection between OA and COVID-19 outcomes. The analysis utilized publicly available GWAS summary datasets, incorporating data on OA (N = 455,221), SARS-CoV-2 infection (N = 2,597,856), hospitalized COVID-19 (N = 2,095,324), and critical COVID-19 (N = 1,086,211). Additionally, we performed a literature analysis to establish a molecular network connecting OA and COVID-19. Results The MR analysis showed causal effects of OA on hospitalized COVID-19 (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.02-1.43, p = 0.026) and critical COVID-19 (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.09-1.68, p = 0.006) but not on SARS-CoV-2 infection as such (OR: 1.00, 95% CI: 0.92-1.08, p = 0.969). Moreover, the literature-based pathway analysis uncovered a set of specific genes, such as CALCA, ACE, SIRT1, TNF, IL6, CCL2, and others, that were found to mediate the association between OA and COVID-19. Conclusion Our findings indicate that OA elevates the risk of severe COVID-19. Therefore, larger efforts should be made in the prevention of COVID-19 in OA patients.

Abstract
This study examines whether activation of the tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) pathway is associated with anxiety symptoms due to Long COVID. We selected 90 participants, 60 Long COVID patients and 30 individuals without any symptoms following acute COVID-19 infection. Using cluster analysis and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating scale (HAMA) score, the pure HAMA anxiety score, serum tryptophan (TRP) and kynurenine (KYN), the KYN/TRP ratio (all measured during Long COVID), and oxygen saturation (SpO2) (measured during the acute phase of COVID-19), we were able to classify Long COVID patients into two distinct clusters with an adequate silhouette cohesion and separation index (0.58): cluster 1 (n = 61) and cluster 2 (n = 29). Cluster 2 patients had lower SpO2 and TRP levels, as well as higher KYN, KYN/TRP ratio, and HAMA scores than cluster 1. Regression analysis revealed that the KYN/TRP ratio explained 14.4 % of the variance in the HAMA score (F = 14.81, df = 1/88, p = 0.001). In addition, regression analysis revealed that SpO2 partially explained the variance in serum TRP (r = 0.396, p = 0.005), KYN/TRP ratio (r = - 0.248, p = 0.018), and the HAMA score (r = - 0.279, p = 0.008). The current data imply that decreased SpO2 during the acute phase of COVID-19 infection is predictive of anxiety caused by Long COVID. Our data reveal that around 32 % of Long COVID patients have elevated IDO activity in association with elevated anxiety.

Abstract
Post-COVID syndrome has been defined as signs and symptoms that develop after an infection consistent with COVID-19 and continue for more than 12 weeks, including neurocognitive signs and symptoms that have an impact on the functioning and quality of life of middle-aged adult and older survivors. This systematic review describes the current knowledge of long-term cognitive impairments in COVID-19 survivors, approaches strategies, and their impact on public and private health services worldwide. The systematic review was conducted under the criteria and flowchart established in the PRISMA statement, considering studies from the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases between 2020 and 2023. The included studies considered participants over 40 years of age, COVID-19 survivors. A total of 68 articles were included, most of which had high to excellent quality. The analysis showed the presence of heterogeneous cognitive symptoms in COVID survivors, persistent for at least 12 weeks from the onset of infection, mostly unsystematized and nonspecific approaches strategies, and a lack of methods for monitoring their effectiveness, with a significant economic and logistical impact on health systems. Specific protocols are required for the rehabilitation of persistent cognitive dysfunction in COVID-19 survivors, as well as longitudinal studies to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions.

Abstract
COVID-19, initially regarded as specific lung disease, exhibits an extremely broad spectrum of symptoms. Extrapulmonary manifestations of the disease also include important neuropsychiatric symptoms with atypical characteristics. Are these disturbances linked to stress accompanying every systemic infection, or are due to specific neurobiological changes associated with COVID-19? Evidence accumulated so far indicates that the pathophysiology of COVID-19 is characterized by systemic inflammation, hypoxia resulting from respiratory failure, and neuroinflammation (either due to viral neurotropism or in response to cytokine storm), all affecting the brain. It is reasonable to hypothesize that all these events may initiate or worsen psychiatric and cognitive disorders. Damage to the brain triggers a specific type of reactive response mounted by neuroglia cells, in particular by astrocytes which are the homeostatic cell par excellence. Astrocytes undergo complex morphological, biochemical, and functional remodeling aimed at mobilizing the regenerative potential of the central nervous system. If the brain is not directly damaged, resolution of systemic pathology usually results in restoration of the physiological homeostatic status of neuroglial cells. The completeness and dynamics of this process in pathological conditions remain largely unknown. In a subset of patients, glial cells could fail to recover after infection thus promoting the onset and progression of COVID-19-related neuropsychiatric diseases. There is evidence from post-mortem examinations of the brains of COVID-19 patients of alterations in both astrocytes and microglia. In conclusion, COVID-19 activates a huge reactive response of glial cells, that physiologically act as the main controller of the inflammatory, protective and regenerative events. However, in some patients the restoration of glial physiological state does not occur, thus compromising glial function and ultimately resulting in homeostatic failure underlying a set of specific neuropsychiatric symptoms related to COVID-19.

Abstract
The Coronavirus has infected up to 900 million people as of 11 Jan 2023 in China Mainland, which is more than 60% of the population. The sudden and unprecedented nature of pandemic has resulted in a range of psychosomatic issues among the population. These issues can manifest in a variety of ways and it is important to address these issues as they can have serious consequences for individuals' mental and physical health. The lifting of lockdown measures in China presents an opportunity to address these issues and provide support to those who have been affected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence shows that cognitive dysfunction may occur following coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) infection which is one of the most common symptoms reported in researches of "Long COVID". Several inflammatory markers are known to be elevated in COVID-19 survivors and the relationship between long-term inflammation changes and cognitive function remains unknown. METHODS We assessed cognitive function and neuropsychiatric symptoms of 66 COVID-19 survivors and 79 healthy controls (HCs) matched with sex, age, and education level using a digital, gamified cognitive function evaluation tool and questionnaires at 15 months after discharge. Venous blood samples were collected to measure cytokine levels. We performed correlation analyses and multiple linear regression analysis to identify the factors potentially related to cognitive function. RESULTS The COVID-19 survivors performed less well on the Trails (p = 0.047) than the HCs, but most of them did not report subjective neuropsychiatric symptoms. Intensive care unit experience (β = -2.247, p < 0.0001) and self-perceived disease severity (β = -1.522, p = 0.007) were positively correlated, whereas years of education (β = 0.098, p = 0.013) was negatively associated with the performance on the Trails. Moreover, the abnormally elevated TNF-α levels (r = -0.19, p = 0.040) were negatively correlated with performance on the Trails in COVID-19 group. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that COVID-19 survivors show long-term cognitive impairment in executive function, even at 15 months after discharge. Serum TNF-α levels may be an underlying mechanism of long-term cognitive impairment in patients recovering from COVID-19.

Abstract
It was reported that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may cause brain size reduction and cognitive decline. Whether COVID-19 may contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is not known. We conducted genetic correlation and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to assess genetic relationships and potential causal associations between AD and three COVID-19 outcomes (SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 hospitalization, and critical COVID-19) by utilizing genome-wide association study datasets on these traits. A map of COVID-19-driven molecular pathways was constructed to investigate potential mechanisms underlying the COVID-19 and AD connection. Genetic correlation analyses indicated that AD had a significant positive genetic correlation with hospitalized COVID-19 (rg = 0.271). The MR analysis from the inverse-variance-weighted model showed that genetic liabilities to hospitalized COVID-19 (odds ratio: 1.02, 95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.03) and critical COVID-19 (1.01, 1.00-1.02) were associated with an increased risk for AD. However, no causal effect of genetic liability to SARS-CoV-2 infection on AD was detected (1.03, 0.97-1.09). A total of 60 functionally interconnected genes were reported to mediate the COVID-19-AD connection, which showed functional enrichment in immunity-related pathways and tissue enrichment in the lung and brain. Our study suggests that severe COVID-19 may contribute to the development of AD, while suffering a mild case of COVID-19 may not increase the risk for AD. The influence of COVID-19 on AD may be mediated by immunity-related pathways acting predominantly in the lung and brain.

Abstract
The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 invades the central nervous system, impacting the mental health of COVID-19 patients. We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to assess the potential causal effects of COVID-19 on schizophrenia. Our analysis indicated that genetic liability to hospitalized COVID-19 was associated with an increased risk for schizophrenia (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.02-1.20, P = 0.013). However, genetic liability to SARS-CoV-2 infection was not associated with the risk of schizophrenia (1.06, 0.83-1.37, P = 0.643). Severe COVID-19 was associated with an 11% increased risk for schizophrenia, suggesting that schizophrenia should be assessed as one of the post-COVID-19 sequelae.
