Abstract
The current feeding study was designed to validate the two dietary essential amino acid profiles (EAAP) established based on linear broken-line (LBL) and quadratic broken-line (QBL) models, in a previous study, against Evonik (AMINOHen) and breeder recommendations for ISA Brown layers for peak production (PP, 20 to 44 weeks of age), and post peak production (post PP, 44 to 75 weeks of age). The EAAP based on LBL models on average had 19.5% and 26.0% lower digestible AA (Lys, Met + Cys, Thr, Trp, Ile and Val), than the EAAP based on QBL models for PP and post PP, respectively. The EAAP based on AMINOHen and breeder recommendation had lower digestible AA than QBL, and higher EAAP than LBL models for both production phases. At 20 weeks of age, 224 ISA Brown layer hens were weighed and randomly allocated to individual battery cages. Each of the four diets was replicated 8 times with 7 birds per replicate. Egg production was recorded daily, and egg weights were measured at the end of each week. Feed consumption was measured at the end of each period. The egg production rate was not significantly affected by the diets and remained at around 98.0% (PP) and 95.0% (post PP) (P > 0.05). Birds fed diets based on LBL recommendation consistently laid smaller eggs, resulting in a lower egg mass (59.8 vs. 62.0 g egg/hen per day during PP, and 60.3 vs. 63.0 g egg/hen per day during post PP; P < 0.05). Diets had no significant effect on feed intake and body weight (P > 0.05). The highest feed conversion ratio (FCR) during PP (P = 0.067) and post PP (P < 0.05) was recorded for the birds offered diets based on LBL recommendation. In conclusion, all four EAAP tested in this study support an above average egg production rate. However, the EAAP based on LBL models may potentially decrease the input feed cost per kilogram of eggs but are not set to optimise FCR and maximise egg mass.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to determine the standardized ileal digestible (SID) calcium requirement of fast-growing broilers from hatch to d 14 post-hatch. Ross 308 (n = 360) male broilers were obtained on day of hatch and allocated to 1 of 5 treatments in battery cages. There were 6 birds per cage and 12 pens per treatment. Four treatments were formulated to contain 0.60%, 0.46%, 0.32% or 0.18% SID Ca. The final treatment was formulated using total Ca to meet or exceed all nutrient requirements, including 0.90% total Ca and 0.49% non-phytate P (nPP), using the same ingredients. This treatment was the reference diet for comparison and validation of the SID Ca diets. Birds and feed were weighed at placement and on d 14. Tibias and ileal contents were obtained on d 14 and excreta was collected per pen and pooled on d 14. Data were analyzed using JMP Pro and requirements were estimated using 3 different non-linear regression models. Increasing the SID Ca content in the diet from 0.18% to 0.60% improved (quadratic, P < 0.05) body weight gain and mortality corrected feed conversion ratio (mFCR). The estimated SID Ca requirement to optimize gain or mFCR was between 0.39% and 0.52%. Tibia ash percent and weight increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) as SID Ca content in the diet increased and the estimated SID Ca requirement was between 0.32% and 0.58%. Phosphorus utilization was improved in birds fed diets formulated using SID Ca compared with birds fed the reference diet. In conclusion, the SID Ca requirement of fast-growing broilers from hatch to d 14 was estimated between 0.534% and 0.398% when quadratic, straight-broken line, or quadratic-broken line regressions were used. These results agree with previously published data evaluating the SID Ca requirement of fast-growth broilers from hatch to d 10.

Abstract
Alternative methods to alleviate coccidiosis in broilers are of interest to producers, including dietary strategies to minimize disruptions in growth rate and efficiency when faced with health challenges. Our objective was to determine optimal combinations of dietary starch, amino acids (AA), and oil to benefit productivity of broilers experiencing Eimeria-induced immune activation. Two trials were conducted using 1,536 male Ross 308 broiler chicks in floor pens randomly assigned to 1 of 17 experimental treatments. All birds received common starter (d 0-10) and finisher (d 24-35) diets, and only differed based on their assigned experimental grower diet (d 10-24). Trial 1 experimental grower diets ranged from 2,700 to 3,300 kcal/kg AME. Trial 2 included 10 experimental grower diets following a simplex lattice design consisting of 3 basal lots formulated to have the highest starch (45.4%), oil (10.2%), or AA density (120, 1.33% digestible Lys) and mixed in 4 equally spaced levels for each component (0, 0.33, 0.67, 1). These mixtures enabled varying densities of AA (80-120% of recommendation), starch:oil (4:1-20:1), and AME (2,940-3,450 kcal/kg). Bird and feeder weights were collected on d 0, 10, 24, and 35, and birds were exposed to an Eimeria challenge on d 11 or 12. In trial 2, excreta samples were collected for AME determination and carcasses were processed on d 36. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, t test, or regression. In Trial 1, BW gain and feed conversion were improved (P < 0.05) by increasing dietary AME. In Trial 2, birds receiving diets containing AA at 93 to 107% of recommendations and higher oil exhibited improved (P < 0.05) performance, but increased starch at the expense of oil reduced performance (P < 0.05). Relative breast and fat pad weights were not influenced by diet in Trial 2. We determined that broilers mildly challenged with Eimeria would exhibit highest BW gain when receiving diets containing 35.8% starch, 8.9% oil, and 101.3% of AA recommendations, which can be utilized by producers to maintain productivity under health-challenged conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure of broilers to litter microbiome may increase specific amino acid (AA) requirements towards activated immune responses. This may challenge the generality of the ideal protein (IP) concept, in which dietary essential AA to lysine ratios aimed to mimic presumably constant AA to lysine ratios in whole bird requirements. Therefore, we tested the effect of threonine, arginine and glutamine (TAG) supplementation to IP-based control diets (C) on performance, caecal microbiome composition, short-chain fatty acids and litter characteristics of broiler chickens placed on reused litter. RESULTS Thirty-two pens with ten male broiler chickens each were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of two diet treatments (with or without TAG supplementation) and two litter treatments (placement on clean or reused litter) for 21 days (n = 8). Caecal contents were analysed for microbiome profile using percent guanine + cytosine (%G + C profile) method and short chain fatty acids. TAG-supplemented birds underperformed compared to C birds (P = 0.002), whereas birds placed on reused litter outperformed those on clean litter (P = 0.047). Diet, reused litter and their interaction impacted the %G + C profile at different ranges. Whilst TAG supplementation reduced bacterial abundance at %G + C 51-56 (P < 0.05), reused litter placement tended to reduce %G + C 23-31 and increase %G + C 56-59 (P < 0.10). However, TAG supplementation reduced bacterial abundance at %G + C 47-51 (P < 0.05) and increased caecal branched chain fatty acids on clean litter only (P = 0.025). Greater levels of propionic acid were observed for C birds placed on reused litter only (P = 0.008). Litter pH was greater for reused litter pens than clean litter pens at day 21 (P < 0.001). In addition, litter moisture content was less for TAG birds and reused litter pens compared to C birds (P = 0.041) and clean litter pens (P < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS These data support the view that irrespective of performance benefits arising from bird placement on reused litter, TAG supplementation to IP-formulated baseline rations impaired growth, supported by the lowered abundance of caecal bacteria known to dominate in well-performing birds and greater levels of caecal branched chain fatty acids.

Abstract
The growth performance and histochemical characteristics of breast muscle fibers were used to estimate the standardized ileal digestible (SID) Lys requirements for 10- to 21-d-old male broilers. Three hundred and sixty 10-d-old Ross 308 broilers (290 ± 16.6 g) were allocated to 6 diets in a randomized complete block design with 6 replicate cages per treatment and 10 birds per cage. The 6 experimental diets were formulated to contain equally spaced increasing levels of SID Lys from 0.86% to 1.36%. The data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. The Lys requirements were estimated by the NLIN procedure of SAS. An increase in dietary SID Lys from 0.86% to 1.36% resulted in a quadratic increase (P < 0.05) in body weight gain (BWG), gain to feed ratio (G:F), breast weight, muscle cross-sectional area (MCSA), and fiber area. The SID Lys requirements based on the one-slope broken-line, quadratic line, the first intercept between the plateau of the one-slope broken-line and quadratic-line models and 95% of the upper asymptote of the quadratic-line model were estimated to be 1.01%, 1.19%, 1.08%, and 1.13% for BWG, 1.06%, 1.22%, 1.11%, and 1.16% for G:F, 1.10%, 1.29%, 1.19%, and 1.22% for breast weight, 1.06%, 1.22%, 1.12%, and 1.16% for MCSA, and 1.14%, 1.22%, 1.16%, and 1.16% for breast muscle fiber area, respectively. It was concluded that the SID Lys requirements for broilers at the age of 10 to 21 d depended on the response variables used for estimation, and that histochemical characteristics of breast muscle fibers could be good indicators for estimating SID Lys requirements.

Abstract
The role of the microbiota in the health of the host is complex and multifactorial. The microbiota both consumes nutrients in competition with the host, but also creates nutrients that can be used by other microbes, but also the host. However, the quantitative impact of the microbiota on nutrient supply and demand is not well understood in poultry. The gastrointestinal tract is one of the largest points of contact with the external environment, and the intestinal microbiome is the largest and most complex of any system. Although the intestinal microbiota has first access to consumed nutrients, including vitamins, and is potentially a major contributor to production of various vitamins, the quantification of these impacts remains very poorly understood in poultry. Based on the human literature, it is clear that vitamin deficiencies can have systemic effects on the regulation of many physiological systems, beyond the immediate, direct nutrient functions of the vitamins. The impact of excessive supplementation of vitamins on the microbiota is not well understood in any species. In the context of poultry nutrition, in which substantial dietary excesses of most vitamins are provided, this represents a knowledge gap. Given the paucity of studies investigating the vitamin requirements of modern, high-producing poultry, the limited understanding of vitamin nutrition (supply and utilization) by the microbiome, and the potential impacts on the microbiome of the move away from dietary growth-promoting antibiotic use, more research in this area is required. The microbiota also contributes a vast array of other metabolites involved in intramicrobiota communication, symbiosis and competition that can also have an impact on the host. Myo-inositol and butyrate are briefly discussed as examples of biofactors produced by the microbiota as mediators of intestinal health.

Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplemental protease and cereal grain type on nutrient digestibility (jejunum and ileum) and performance of broilers offered diets with reduced amino acid concentrations and supplemental xylanase and phytase. A total of 624 male broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly distributed into 48 floor pens (13 chicks/pen; 0.07 m2/bird) and offered one of six dietary treatments with eight replicates per treatment. Dietary treatments were either maize- or wheat-based with a positive control (PC) reference diet, a negative control diet without protease (NC; 60 g/kg lower amino acid density than PC), and an NC diet with protease. The reduction in amino acid density affected (P<0.05) nutrient digestibility by varying degrees depending on cereal grain source. At 14 d of age, cereal grain and protease showed a significant interaction (P<0.05) which affected jejunal and ileal starch digestibility, whereby protease increased digestibility in birds fed wheat-based diets but not in those fed maize-based diets. Cereal grain source affected (P<0.05) nitrogen (jejunum and ileum) and digestible energy (DE; ileum), where birds fed wheat-based diets had higher digestibility than those fed maize-based diets. At 28 d of age, birds fed wheat-based diets had a higher (P<0.01) jejunal and ileal nitrogen digestibility, whereas protease reduced ileal nitrogen digestion. Protease affected ileal starch digestion in birds fed wheat, but not maize-based diets, resulting in a significant cereal grain × protease interaction (P<0.05). Wheat-based diets had a higher DE than maize-based diets in both the jejunum and ileum. From 15 to 35 d of age, cereal grain source (P<0.05) affected performance, whereby broilers offered maize-based diets had better performance than those fed wheat-based diets.

Abstract
The nutritional composition of diets and the provision of exogenous enzymes play important roles in animal performance. Here, we evaluated the individual and combined impact of nutrients (metabolizable energy (ME), digestible lysine (dLys), available phosphorus and calcium (avP-Ca)) and exogenous multicarbohydrase and phytase complex (MCPC) enyzmes on the growth performance and feed efficiency of broiler chickens from 10 to 42 days (d) of age. Experimental diets were formulated in a Box-Behnken design to contain various levels of ME (11.89, 12.21, 12.54 or 13.06 MJ/kg), dLys (0.91%, 0.93%, 0.96% or 1.00%) and avP/Ca (0.12/0.47%, 0.21/0.58% or 0.33/0.68%). The effect of MCPC was expressed in terms of the extra nutrients released. The diets were formulated to have consistent substrate contents (i.e., arabinoxylan and phytate). Feed intake (FI), BW gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were described via polynomial equations (R2 = 0.99, 0.98 and 0.81, respectively), with interconnections between variables (ME, dLys and avP-Ca). Available P-Ca was the most important factor affecting FI (quadratically), and BWG and FCR (linearly). Reducing the avP content from 0.33% to 0.12% in diets lacking MCPC resulted in 25% and 33% decreases in FI and BWG, respectively, and a 12% increase in FCR. The ME and dLys contents also linearly affected these performance parameters to a lesser degree; FI decreased by 400 g when the ME was reduced by 1.17 MJ/kg, and by 300 g following a 0.09% reduction of dLys, while the same reductions in ME and dLys decreased BWG by 120 g and 150 g, respectively. The inclusion of MCPC alleviated the reduction of FI, BWG and FCR by decreasing the avP-Ca. Thus, ME and dLys were the most important factors affecting BWG and FCR in broilers fed diets containing MCPC. When MCPC was added, ME negatively affected FI (r = -0.89, P < 0.001), whereas the dLys content was correlated with BWG (r = 0.74, P < 0.001). Both ME and dLys affected FCR (r = -0.83 and -0.85, respectively). Supplementing MCPC allowed the reduction of ME, dLys and avP-Ca in the diet without affecting performance. Indeed, MCPC's effect promoted with the release of the following nutrients: 0.56 MJ ME/kg, 0.06% dLys, and 0.15% and 0.13% avP and Ca, respectively. The results indicate nutrient effect and interaction on performance and feed additive potential for nutrient release.

Abstract
There is growing interest among nutritionists in feeding reduced protein diets to broiler chickens. Although nearly a century of research has been conducted providing biochemical insights on the impact of reduced protein diets for broilers, practical limitation still exists. The present review was written to provide insights on further reducing dietary protein in broilers. To construct this review, eighty-nine peer reviewed manuscripts in the area of amino acid nutrition in poultry were critiqued. Hence, nutritional research areas of low protein diets, threonine, glycine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, histidine, and glutamine have been assessed and combined in this text, thus providing concepts into reduced protein diets for broilers. In addition, linkages between the cited work and least cost formation ingredient and nutrient matrix considerations are provided. In conclusion, practical applications in feeding reduced protein diets to broilers are advancing, but more work is warranted.

Abstract
Broiler live performance may be influenced by postharvest corn drying temperature, and results could depend on particle size after grinding. The supplementation with an exogenous amylase may improve performance parameters, but responses to enzymes are also affected by particle size. Two parallel experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of hard-kernel corn dried at 2 temperatures (35°C and 120°C), ground at 2 particle sizes (coarse or fine), and 3 supplementation levels (0, 133, and 266 g ton-1) of an exogenous amylase on live performance, gastrointestinal organ development, energy utilization, and nutrient digestibility. Twelve dietary treatments resulting from a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of drying temperature, particle size, and amylase supplementation were evaluated in both experiments. A total of 1,920 day-old male chicks were randomly allocated to 96 floor pens, while 480 chicks were distributed among 4 battery brooder units. Ileal and fecal samples were collected to determine energy utilization and nutrient digestibility using titanium dioxide as inert marker. At 42 D, organs were collected, and relative weight or length was determined. Data were analyzed using a three-way ANOVA in a randomized complete block design. Feeding fine corn-based diets showed improvements on live performance for both studies. At 40 D, supplementing 266 g ton-1 of amylase improved feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05) by 1 point compared to chickens that consumed nonsupplemented diets and feed with amylase at 133 g ton-1. Broilers fed coarse corn-based diets had heavier gizzard (P < 0.001) and liver (P < 0.05) than chickens that consumed fine corn-based diets. In addition, starch digestibility was improved by amylase (P < 0.05) at 133 g ton-1 and by feeding coarse corn-based diets (P = 0.06). For chicks raised in cages (16 D), AMEn was increased (P < 0.01) by amylase supplementation regardless of its inclusion level. In conclusion, drying temperature and particle size interactions influenced broiler live performance, gastrointestinal organ development, nutrient digestibility, and energy utilization, and these parameters were improved by supplementing amylase.

Abstract
A total of 945 male Ross 308 broiler chicks were used in a growth study to explore the interaction between dietary crude protein concentration and available phosphorus. Nine experimental treatments were constructed factorially by offering low, medium, or standard protein concentrations without or with low, standard, or high available phosphorus. Diets were based on corn, wheat, and soybean meal and all nutrients other than protein/amino acids and available phosphorus were maintained at or above breeder guidelines. Additional synthetic amino acids were used in the diets with low protein concentration in attempt to maintain digestible amino acid supply. Diets were offered to 7 replicate pens of 15 chicks per pen from day 8 to 35. Growth performance was measured during the grower (day 8-24) and finisher (day 25-35) periods. On day 35 carcass composition was determined, blood was drawn for various biochemical measurements and the tibia was excised for mechanical and compositional analyses. Birds that received the low-protein diet had lower terminal body weight and higher feed conversion ratio compared with those that received diets with adequate crude protein content. However, addition of available phosphorus to the low-protein diet resulted in significant reductions in weight-corrected feed conversion that were not evident in the diet with adequate protein content. Bone architecture was only moderately influenced by dietary treatment but birds that ingested the diets containing low and medium protein concentrations had relatively heavier abdominal fat pad weight. Blood biochemistry, especially ammonia, uric acid, and phosphorus, was influenced by both dietary protein and available phosphorus and trends suggested that both axes are involved in protein accretion and catabolism. It can be concluded that performance losses associated with feeding low protein diets to broiler chickens may be partially restored by additional available phosphorus. The implications for use of exogenous enzymes such as protease and phytase and protein nutrition per se warrants further examination.

Abstract
A Box-Behnken designed study was completed to predict growth performance, carcass characteristics and plasma hormone and metabolite levels as influenced by dietary energy, amino acid densities and starch to lipid ratios in male broiler chickens. The design comprised three dietary energy densities (11.25, 12.375 and 13.5 MJ/kg), three digestible lysine concentrations (9.2, 10.65 and 12.1 g/kg) and three starch to lipid ratios (4.5, 12.25 and 20.0) in broiler diets based on maize and soybean meal. Each of thirteen dietary treatments was offered to 10 replicates of 15 birds per replicate floor pen or a total of 1,950 Ross 308 male broiler chickens from 21 to 35 days post-hatch. Increasing dietary energy decreased feed intake with a quadratic relationship between feed intake and dietary standardised ileal digestible (SID) Lys concentrations, where increasing SID Lys initially increased and then depressed feed intake. Increasing dietary amino acid density increased body weight gain and carcass weight; however, dietary energy did not influence body weight gain, carcass and breast meat weight. Feed efficiency was positively influenced by energy and amino acid densities but negatively influenced by starch to lipid ratios and energy and amino acids had more pronounced impacts than starch to lipid ratios. This study indicated that both energy and amino acid densities regulate feed intakes in broiler chickens. Body weight gain of modern broiler chickens is more responsive to amino acid densities; nevertheless, dietary energy density continues to play an important role in protein utilisation, as reflected in significantly reduced plasma uric acid levels.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the total Valine (Val) requirement of first cycle laying hens from 41 to 60 wk of age. A total of 270 Hy-line W-36 laying hens were randomly assigned to 6 treatments with 15 replicate groups of 3 birds for each experimental unit. A Val deficient basal diet was formulated with corn and peanut meal with analyzed Val, Lys and crude protein concentrations of 0.515, 0.875, and 13.38%, respectively. Synthetic L-Val was supplemented to the basal diet in 0.070% increments to generate experimental diets containing 0.515, 0.585, 0.655, 0.725, 0.795, and 0.865% Val respectively. A controlled feeding program was applied during the experiment resulting in approximately 95 g feed intake per hen per day. Linear broken line, quadratic broken line, quadratic polynomial and exponential models were used to estimate the Val requirement of the hens based on hen-housed egg production (HHEP), egg mass (EM), and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Hen-housed egg production ranged from 48.3 to 81.4%, dependent upon dietary concentration of Val. Val requirements estimated by linear broken line, quadratic broken line, quadratic polynomial and exponential models were reported. Using the linear broken line model, the Val requirement was highest for egg mass, 597.3 mg/d, followed by egg production, 591.9 mg/d and lowest for FCR, 500.5 mg/d.

Abstract
A 3-factor, 3-level Box-Behnken design was used to investigate the interaction effect of dietary digestible lysine (dLys, 9.5, 10.5, 11.5 g/kg), apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn, 12.77, 13.19, 13.61 MJ/kg) and available P (avP, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 g/kg) levels on performance and amino acid (AA) digestibility of Ross 308 male broilers (n = 1,050) from d 14 to 34. The design consisted of 15 treatments each replicated 5 times with 12 birds per replicate. On d 34, 3 birds were sampled from each pen to collect ileal digesta (pooled per pen) to analyze AA. Response surface was fitted by first-, second-, or third-degree polynomial regressions in JMP statistical software v. 12.0.1. Feed intake (FI), weight gain (WG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were affected by dLys (linear and quadratic, P < 0.01), AMEn (linear, P < 0.01) and AMEn × avP (P < 0.01). Increased dLys increased FI but increased AMEn decreased FI in the birds fed the low-avP diet. However, when the avP level in the diet was increased, FI decreased to 13 MJ/kg AMEn and remained constant thereafter. Increased dLys increased WG whereas an increase in AMEn decreased WG in the birds fed the low-avP diet but had no effect on WG in those fed the high-avP diet. Increased dLys decreased FCR whereas increased AMEn decreased FCR in the birds fed the low-avP diet but had no effect on FCR in those fed the high-avP diet. Increased dLys increased breast yield percentage (linear, P < 0.01 and quadratic, P < 0.05) whereas increased AMEn decreased breast yield percentage (linear, P < 0.01). Dietary levels of dLys or avP had positive, linear effects on apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of methionine (P < 0.01) and threonine (P < 0.01) but had no effect on other AA (P > 0.05). These results indicate that increasing dLys levels above current industry standard would improve broiler performance irrespective of AMEn or avP levels of the diet.
