Abstract
OBJECTIVE After menopause, body composition changes with body fat accumulation, and an increase in cardiometabolic risk factors. Total fat mass, regional fat mass, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) may be estimated with anthropometric measures, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The aim of our study was to assess which measurement correlated best with cardiometabolic risk factors in healthy nonobese postmenopausal women. METHODS The CoLaus/OsteoLaus cohort included 1,500 postmenopausal women (age range 50-80). We analyzed correlations between: 1) measurements of body composition assessed by anthropometric measures, BIA, and DXA and 2) these measurements and different selected cardiometabolic risk factors, such as blood pressure, lipid markers (cholesterol subtypes and triglycerides), and metabolic markers (glucose, insulin, adiponectin, and leptin). Spearman correlation coefficient, stepwise forward regression, and linear regression analyses were used to determine association between anthropometric measurements and cardiometabolic risk factors. RESULTS In the 803 included participants (mean age 62.0 ± 7.1 y, mean body mass index 25.6 kg/m2 ± 4.4), correlations between total fat mass measured by BIA and total fat mass, android fat, gynoid fat, or VAT measured by DXA are very strong (from r = 0.531, [99% confidence interval (CI), 0.443-0.610] to r = 0.704, [99% CI, 0.640-0.758]). Body mass index and waist circumference have a higher correlation with VAT (r = 0.815, [99% CI, 0.772-0.851] and r = 0.823 [99% CI, 0.782-0.858], respectively) than BIA (r = 0.672 [99% CI, 0.603-0.731]). Among the anthropometric measurement and the measurements derived from DXA and BIA, VAT is the parameter most strongly associated with cardiometabolic risk factors. VAT better explains the variation of most of the cardiometabolic risk factors than age and treatment. For example, nearly 5% of the variability of the diastolic blood pressure (9.9 vs 4.9), nearly 15% of the variability of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (20.3 vs 3.8) and triglyceride (21.1 vs 6.5), 25.3% of the variability of insulin (33.3 vs 8.1), and 37.5% of the variability of leptin (37.7 vs 1.1) were explained by VAT. CONCLUSIONS BIA seems not to be a good tool to assess VAT. At the population level, waist circumference and body mass index seem to be good tools to estimate VAT. VAT measured by DXA is the parameter most correlated with cardiometabolic risk factors and could become a component of the cardiometabolic marker on its own.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity is considered a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). This study aimed to examine the correlation between anthropometric measurements, which have been recently defined and are indicative of abdominal obesity and cardiometabolic diseases, OSAS severity, and polysomnography (PSG) parameters in patients with OSAS. MATERIAL AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent all-night polysomnography with a prediagnosis of OSAS. These patients were categorized as having mild (5-15), moderate (15-30), and severe (>30) OSAS according to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). The anthropometric measurements used in the study consisted of waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), (waist/hip)-to-height ratio (WHHR), a body shape index (ABSI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), and conicity index (CI). RESULTS A total of 410 individuals were enrolled in the study (31 control subjects and 129 with mild, 101 with moderate, and 149 with severe OSAS). A significant difference was observed between groups in terms of all anthropometric measurements (p<0.05). The difference between the groups was significant in terms of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (p<0.05). There was a significant correlation between each of the anthropometric measurements and the PSG parameters. In the receiver operating characteristic analysis, cutoff values that predicted severe OSAS were ABSI>0.08, BAI>28.29, AVI>25.54, and CI>1.37. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that age, sex, and AVI were independent predictors that determine OSAS presence. CONCLUSION Anthropometric parameters that are indicators of abdominal obesity were found to be robustly correlated with cardiometabolic diseases and the severity of OSAS.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several previous reports have highlighted the association between adiposity and risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although it is necessary to identify which adiposity indices are best suited to identify MetS, no such study has been completed in diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of eight anthropometric indices to identify MetS in diabetic, middle-aged and elderly Chinese patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 906 type 2 diabetic patients in Guangxi. RESULTS The highest odds ratios for the identification of MetS were identified with CUN-BAE (OR = 28.306). The largest areas under the curve (AUCs) were observed for WHtR and BRI in men aged 40-59; CUN-BAE in men aged 60 and over; WHtR, BRI, and TyG in women aged 40-59; and BMI for women aged 60 and over. The weakest indicator for the screening of MetS in type 2 diabetes was the ABSI. CONCLUSION The most effective anthropometric indicator for the identification of MetS varied across sex and age subgroups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Qatar more than 70% 0f the adults are overweight and obese. Different adiposity assessment methods have been proposed to identify individuals at cardio-metabolic risk. PURPOSE This study aimed to compare anthropometric indicators with Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) -derived adiposity indicators in predicting cardio-metabolic risk among Qatari adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS A random sample of five hundred and fifty-eight (558) healthy Qatari adults (men and women) aged 20 to 50 years was obtained from Qatar Biobank survey data. Anthropometric data (weight, height, and waist circumference), the DXA-derived data, and cardio-metabolic (CM) risk parameters were analyzed. A Spearman partial correlation coefficient, Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve and an area under curve (AUC) were used to assess the predicting ability of adiposity indicators for CM risk factors. RESULTS Adiposity indices (anthropometric and DXA) were significantly correlated with most of the CM indicators (r= -0.292 to 0.486, p< 0.001). The AUC of waist to height ratio (WHtR) was significantly higher than that of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in the prediction of low high density lipoprotein (HDL) (AUC=0.65, AUC=0.59; AUC=0.64), high low density lipoprotein (LDL) (AUC=0.67; AUC=0.62; AUC=0.66), high cholesterol (AUC=0.66; AUC=0.63; AUC=0.63), and high Homeostatic Model Assessment- (HOMA) (AUC= 0.81; AUC= 0.78; AUC=0.78). Among DXA- parameters, trunk fat had the highest AUCs for total cholesterol (AUC= 0.64, CI=0.56, 0.73), triglycerides and glucose index (TyG) (AUC=0.69, CI=0.64, 0.74), and HOMA (AUC=0.78, CI= 0.73, 0.84). CONCLUSION Results of the present study show that adiposity indicators (WC and WHtR) are clinically valuable tools to identify individuals at risk of CVD compared to DXA-derived parameters, while DXA can provide more accurate estimates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity increases mortality, and is linked to cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the ability of different adiposity indices to identify subjects with MetS among people with intermediate cariovascular risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS The cross-sectional study involved 2478 subjects, recruited by the MARK study. Adiposity measures: general adiposity by body mass index (BMI), central adiposity by waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), fat mass percent by the Clínica Universidad de Navarra-body adiposity estimator (CUN-BAE), percentage of body fat and of visceral adipose tissue by body roundness index (BRI) and visceral obesity and general adiposity with body shape index (ABSI). The diagnosis of MetS was made in accordance with the criteria established in the international consensus of the Joint Scientific Statement National Cholesterol Education Program III. RESULTS The highest correlation coefficients were obtained by the glycemic components (HbA1c and FPG) of the MetS and ranged from 0.155 to 0.320. The exception was ABSI, which showed lower values in the global analysis and in the males. Values of the area under the ROC curve with the adiposity indices ranged from 0.773 with the BMI in males to 0.567 with ABSI in males. In the logistic regression analysis, all adiposity factors, except ABSI, showed similar OR values of MetS after adjusting for possible confounding factors. In the global analysis, the adiposity index that showed a highest OR of MetS was CUN-BAE (OR 5.50; 95% CI 4.27-7.09). In the analysis by gender, the highest ORs were BMI in males (OR 5.98; 95% CI 4.70-7.60) and both WHtR and BRI in females (OR 4.15; 95% CI 3.09-5.58). CONCLUSION All adiposity indices, except for ABSI, show an association with MetS and similar ability to detect subjects with MetS among people with intermediate cariovascular risk.

Abstract
Obesity, particularly central adiposity, is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Waist circumference (WC) is measured in numerous epidemiologic studies as a relatively simple indicator of central adiposity. However, recently, investigators have considered a measure that takes height into consideration, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) as a more sensitive predictor of CVD. A limited number of studies have examined the association between various measures of central adiposity and obesity with CVD, but there is a dearth of information on this topic focused specifically on African American adults. Given the high rates of cardiovascular disease and metabolic risk factors in this population, it is important to develop validated, easy-to-measure indicators of CVD risk for clinical use. Data from 4758 African American adults participating in the baseline visit of the Jackson Heart Study with available risk factor data were examined, with three measures of body habitus (body mass index (BMI), WC, and WHtR) and five CVD risk factors (HDL and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes, and hypertension), the latter also categorized into multiple (2+) risk factors present. C-statistics for waist circumference (WC), BMI, and WHtR were computed and compared for each model to assess their discriminant abilities. WHtR was a stronger correlate of HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes, hypertension, and multiple risk factors compared to BMI, and was a stronger correlate of HDL cholesterol when compared to WC. These data indicate that, for African American adults, WHtR may be more appropriate measure to identify those at elevated risk for CVD.

Abstract
Abstract Objective: To evaluate central adiposity in elderly women in a gerontology-geriatric care unit of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (the Federal University of Pernambuco). Method: A cross-sectional study involving a sample of 182 elderly women, aged from 60 to 89 years, who received care from January to July 2011, was performed. The variables analyzed were the socio-economic and demographic conditions, lifestyle, waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) of the women, as well as the occurrence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and high total cholesterol levels. Yates' chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test were applied. A significance rate of 5% was adopted for the rejection of the null hypothesis. Results: Of the elderly women surveyed 82.4% had a WC signifying a large waist size, 57.2% were over-weight, 78.3% presented hypercholesterolemia, 63.2% had hypertension and 23.6% had diabetes. 61.5% were aged between 60 and 69 years old; 56% received up to two minimum salaries; 63.5% had less than eight years of schooling, 74.7% stated that they did not smoke, 87.9% did not drink alcohol; and 51.4 had sedentary habits. An association was observed between BMI and central adiposity (CA) (p=0.000). CA tended to be present around 1.2 times more frequently in elderly women with excess weight than among those who were not overweight. Conclusion: The high frequency of central adiposity and overweight indicates the susceptibility of this population to these factors. While no association with cardiovascular risk factors was observed, there is a clear need for monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, so as to identify and treat this debilitating condition, thereby contributing to the quality of life of this population.

Abstract
The body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are commonly used anthropometric measures for predicting cardiovascular diseases risk factors, but it is uncertain which specific measure might be the most appropriate predictor of a cluster of cardiometabolic abnormalities (CMA) in Chinese adults. A body shape index (ABSI) and body roundness index (BRI) have been recently developed as alternative anthropometric indices that may better reflect health status. The main aims of this study were to investigate the predictive capacity of ABSI and BRI in identifying various CMA compared to BMI, WC, waist-to-hip ratio (WHpR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and to determine whether there exists a best single predictor of all CMA.We used data from the 2009 wave of the China Health and Nutrition Survey, and the final analysis included 8126 adults aged 18 to 85 years with available fasting blood samples and anthropometric measurements. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were conducted to assess the best anthropometric indices to predict the risk of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Logistic regression models were fit to evaluate the OR of each CMA according to anthropometric indices.In women, the ROC analysis showed that BRI and WHtR had the best predictive capability in identifying all of CMA (area under the curves [AUCs] ranged from 0.658 to 0.721). In men, BRI and WHtR were better predictor of hypertension, diabetes, and at least 1 CMA (AUC: 0.668, 0.708, and 0.698, respectively), whereas BMI and WC were more sensitive predictor of dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia, and MetS. Furthermore, the ABSI showed the lowest AUCs for each CMA. According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, BRI and WHtR were superior in discriminating hyperuricemia and at least 1 CMA while BMI performed better in predicting hypertension, diabetes, and MetS in women. In men, WC and BRI were the 2 best predictor of all CMA except MetS, and the ABSI was the worst.Our results showed the novel index BRI could be used as a single suitable anthropometric measure in simultaneously identifying a cluster of CMA compared to BMI and WHtR, especially in Chinese women, whereas the ABSI showed the weakest discriminative power.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The relationship between obesity and circulating levels of antioxidants is poorly understood. Most studies that have examined the association of adiposity with blood or tissue concentrations of antioxidant micronutrients have been cross-sectional, and few have compared the associations for indices of overall obesity and central obesity. Our aim was to prospectively examine the longitudinal association of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist circumference-height ratio (WCHtR) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) with major serum antioxidants in a population of postmenopausal women. SUBJECTS/METHODS We used a subsample of participants in the Women's Health Initiative aged 50-79 years at entry with available fasting blood samples and anthropometric measurements obtained at multiple time points over 12.8 years of follow-up (N=2672). Blood samples were used to measure α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lutein+zeaxanthin, α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol and retinol at baseline, and at years 1, 3 and 6. We used mixed-effects linear regression analyses to examine associations between anthropometric measures and serum antioxidants at baseline and over time, controlling for covariates. RESULTS In longitudinal analyses, carotenoids, and particularly β-carotene, were strongly and inversely associated with BMI, WC and WCHtR and less so with WHR. α-Tocopherol showed a strong positive association with WHR but not with other anthropometric measures, whereas γ-tocopherol was positively and strongly associated with BMI, WC, WCHtR and less so with WHR. Retinol was positively associated with WHR. The inverse association of several carotenoids with anthropometric measures was stronger in never and former smokers compared with current smokers and in women without the metabolic syndrome. The inverse association of carotenoids with obesity measures may reflect reduced micronutrient concentrations owing to inflammation associated with obesity. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, the strongest observed associations between anthropometric variables and micronutrients were an inverse association of WC with serum β-carotene and a positive association of WC with γ-tocopherol.
