The influence of psychological capital, authentic leadership in preceptors, and structural empowerment on new graduate nurse burnout and turnover intent

Examining Relationships Among Nursing Students' Views of Suffering, Positive Thinking, and Professional Quality of Life

BACKGROUND

Exposure to suffering can lead to compassion fatigue in undergraduate nursing students.

OBJECTIVE

Guided by resilience theory, a cross-sectional, correlational design was used to investigate the potential moderating effect of positive thinking skills on the relationships between views of suffering, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction.

RESULTS

In 157 undergraduate nursing students, multiple regressions revealed that views of suffering and positive thinking explained 23.8% of the variance in compassion satisfaction (F11,145 = 4.121, P < .001), and 21.9% of the variance in burnout (F11,144 = 3.786, P < .001). The Suffering God view, which stresses the presence of a compassionate deity amid suffering, and positive thinking had significant main effects on compassion satisfaction (β = 0.349, P = .025; and β = 0.309, P < .001, respectively). Positive thinking, the Suffering God view, and the Random view, in which the occurrence of suffering is random and purposeless, had significant main effects on burnout (β = -0.280, P < .001; β = -0.392, P = .014; and β = -0.206, P = .014, respectively). The Unorthodox view, in which a deity exists that allows suffering, had a significant main effect on secondary traumatic stress (β = 0.232, P = .027). Positive thinking did not moderate any of the relationships between the views of suffering and the dependent variables.

CONCLUSIONS

Knowledge of these relationships can aid in the assessment of nursing students at risk for poor outcomes and guide intervention development to promote professional quality of life.

A systematic review of leadership styles in healthcare sector: Insights and future directions

In light of the ongoing global health crisis, the significance of leadership within the healthcare sector has intensified. Given this consideration, the significance of appropriate leadership styles cannot be overstated. The objective of this paper is to critically review published studies on leadership elements in the healthcare sector. Using Bibliometrix R package and VOS viewer, we conducted bibliometric and network analyses on publications retrieved from the Web of Science (WOS) database, with content analysis integrated throughout the paper to deepen understanding. Ultimately, 243 articles were identified as relevant. The findings revealed transformational leadership emerges as the most extensively discussed leadership style. 91% of the articles' theme focus on quantitative research methods. This study synthesizes the influencing factors of the three most frequently discussed leadership styles-transformational, authentic, and ethical leadership-emphasizing the importance of job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior. And provides direction for future research through thematic analysis.

Psychometric properties of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale among undergraduate nursing students

Increasing the resilience of undergraduate nursing students is essential for the individual student's well-being and the healthcare system dealing with a looming nursing shortage. Undergraduate nursing students have reported that positive thinking and positive reframing are ways of coping with exposure to suffering, but measurement of these skills remains limited in this population. This is the first study to examine the psychometric properties of the Positive Thinking Skills Scale specifically in undergraduate nursing students and in a sample that includes students from both public and private universities. Internal consistency was demonstrated with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.824, convergent validity was demonstrated with correlations with measures of views of suffering and professional quality of life, and the one-factor structure was supported in a sample of 157 undergraduate nursing students. The Positive Thinking Skills Scale can be a useful tool to both assess and measure the development of positive thinking skills in undergraduate nursing students.

The relationship between psychological capital, burnout and perceived stress in junior nurses: a latent profile analysis

Background

Psychological capital, an intrinsic personal asset, enhances junior nurses' ability to navigate transition and sustain superior job performance. This study aimed to classify junior nurses into distinct psychological capital profiles and examine their associations with burnout and perceived stress levels.

Methods

A cross-sectional study involving 480 junior nurses from three hospitals in Beijing assessed psychological capital, stress, and burnout using e-questionnaires, from July 2021 to August 2022. We employed exploratory latent profile analysis for psychological capital profiling and logistic regression with the best subset method to identify the influential factors.

Results

The results of the latent profile analysis supported the models of two latent profiles, which were defined as low psychological capital (224, 46.5%) and high psychological capital (256, 53.5%). Logistic regression revealed that introverted nurses and those experiencing moderate to high levels of burnout and stress were more likely to exhibit low psychological capital.

Conclusion

Nursing management should proactively identify and support junior nurses with low psychological capital, with a focus on introverted individuals, to mitigate the impact of stress and burnout.

Self-doubt in Nursing Students: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis

Self-doubt may negatively affect the development of prelicensure nursing students as they prepare to become practice-ready members of the workforce. Walker and Avant's method of analysis was used to explore generalized self-doubt as well as within the context of a contemporary nursing education framework: Aller's Development of Decision-Making and Self-Efficacy Model (ADD-SEM). Results indicate that several attributes of generalized self-doubt, as a form of low psychological capital, were consistent with this construct of the ADD-SEM and should be considered as nurse educators strive to ensure new nurses are prepared for the complexity of today's health care systems.

Structural and psychological empowerment and burnout among nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

This study aims to review available evidence about the relationship between structural and psychological empowerment and burnout among nurses.

BACKGROUND

Nurses are key healthcare providers, who experience higher levels of burnout due to uncertainty and role conflicts about nursing roles and responsibilities and poor management. Nurse empowerment is an effective approach to reduce nurse burnout and enhance patient care quality.

INTRODUCTION

Positive working conditions along with positive attitudes and perceptions for nurses are crucial in the workplace. Nurse empowerment in the workplace results in quality improvements in work life and the provision of healthcare.

METHOD

We conducted a systematic review in accordance with the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA guideline. Relevant studies published between 2007 and 2022 were identified via PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Ovid MEDLINE (R), Science Direct and Turkish scientific literature databases. Studies that reported correlation coefficients were pooled to conduct a meta-analysis.

RESULTS

Random-effects meta-analyses showed a negative association between structural and psychological empowerment and emotional exhaustion. The overall findings showed a moderate and negative association between the six dimensions of structural empowerment and depersonalization. There was a positive association between structural empowerment and personal accomplishment.

DISCUSSION

There is a relationship between decreased burnout levels and nurse empowerment. The causal relationship between empowerment and burnout levels needs to be investigated in various healthcare settings in several countries.

CONCLUSION

The relationship between structural and psychological empowerment and burnout levels emphasizes that empowerment can reduce nurse burnout. Nurse empowerment is a critical management strategy for improving the quality of life for nurses, increasing the quality and effectiveness of patient care and achieving positive outcomes.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

The encouragement and empowerment of nurses for prompt decision-making and effective resource utilization, reduces nurse burnout, enhancing nurses' job commitment, productivity, satisfaction and competence along with increased quality of care. The encouragement of nurses as empowered managers at the macro, meso and institutional levels not only improves the overall quality of health services but also helps to find solutions for the issues concerning healthcare service users and the health system environment.

What might make nurses stay? A protocol for discrete choice experiments to understand NHS nurses' preferences at early-career and late-career stages

INTRODUCTION

Like many countries, England has a national shortage of registered nurses. Employers strive to retain existing staff, to ease supply pressures. Disproportionate numbers of nurses leave the National Health Services (NHS) both early in their careers, and later, as they near retirement age. Research is needed to understand the job preferences of early-career and late-career nurses working in the NHS, so tailored policies can be developed to better retain these two groups.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

We will collect job preference data for early-career and late-career NHS nurses, respectively using two separate discrete choice experiments (DCEs). Findings from the literature, focus groups, academic experts and stakeholder discussions will be used to identify and select the DCE attributes (ie, job features) and levels. We will generate an orthogonal, fractional factorial design using the experimental software Ngene. The DCEs will be administered through online surveys distributed by the regulator Nursing and Midwifery Council. For each group, we expect to achieve a final sample of 2500 registered NHS nurses working in England. For early-career nurses, eligible participants will be registered nurses who graduated in the preceding 5 years (ie, 2019-2023). Eligible participants for the late-career survey will be registered nurses aged 55 years and above. We will use conditional and mixed logit models to analyse the data. Specifically, study 1 will estimate the job preferences of early-career nurses and the possible trade-offs. Study 2 will estimate the retirement preferences of late-career NHS nurses and the potential trade-offs.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

The research protocol was reviewed and approved by the host research organisation Ethics Committees Research Governance (University of Southampton, number 80610) (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/about/governance/regulations-policies/policies/ethics). The results will be disseminated via conference presentations, publications in peer-reviewed journals and annual reports to key stakeholders, the Department of Health and Social Care, and NHS England/Improvement retention leaders.

Closing the Academic-Practice Gap With Enhanced Preceptor Training

A successful pilot program served as a model for how educators in healthcare organizations can reduce the academic-practice gap by supporting preceptors. Preceptors received enhanced training using self-paced online modules and an asynchronous online problem-based learning. Statistically significant increases in self-efficacy and satisfaction with training were reported. Preceptor training included strategies for teaching prioritization, communication, and clinical judgment. Preceptors experienced sustained resilience, increased awareness of well-being, and more engagement in the precepting role.

Measuring Nursing Student Development Through Computer-Based Simulation Activities

BACKGROUND

New nurse attrition jeopardizes patient safety, devastates career plans, and negatively impacts costs to hospitals and patients. Employers and educators recognize the widening transition-to-practice gap in meeting expectations for practice-ready, resilient nurses.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to test the use of computer-based simulation activities (CBSAs) to measure processes in Aller's Development of Decision-Making and Self-Efficacy Model (ADD-SEM).

METHODS

BSN students (N = 50) in a multisite, cross-sectional study used CBSAs to provide data on decision making (Virtual Patient Lasater's Clinical Judgment Rubric), psychological capital (Nursing Anxiety and Self-Confidence in Decision-Making Scale©), and reflection.

RESULTS

Repeated-measures analysis of variance and reflexive thematic analysis revealed that decision-making (DM) scores were highest in noticing and lowest in interpreting with significant differences in cohorts (DM) (juniors: P < .001; seniors: P = .013) and self-confidence/anxiety ( P < .001).

CONCLUSION

The CBSAs are an effective means of measuring student development of DM and psychological capital needed to retain resilient nurses.

Registered nurses' psychological capital: A scoping review

AIMS

The aim was to examine the extent and scope of empirical research concerning registered nurses' psychological capital.

BACKGROUND

In a time of global nursing shortage, identifying variables that could positively contribute to the retention of the nursing workforce is essential. Prior research has shown that psychological capital correlates positively with employees' better performance and well-being.

DESIGN

A scoping review.

DATA SOURCES

A systematic literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus covering the period from 1 January 2005 to 7 May 2023.

REVIEW METHODS

The JBI methodological guidance for scoping reviews was followed. The results were summarized narratively.

RESULTS

A total of 111 studies reported in 114 peer-reviewed articles were included. Studies were carried out across 20 countries, with the majority from China (45), Australia (nine), Pakistan (nine), Canada (eight), South Korea (eight) and the United States (eight). A positive correlation was found between registered nurses' psychological capital and desirable work-related outcomes, such as work engagement, commitment and retention intention.

CONCLUSION

A comprehensive overview of research evidence suggests that psychological capital is associated with many positive work-related outcomes and might therefore be a valuable resource for reducing nurse turnover.

Relationship between Structural Empowerment and Nurse and Patient-Reported Outcomes: The Mediating Role of Control over Nursing Practices

Practices that strengthen nurse work environments and enable them to have control over nursing practices have gained importance in recent years as they increase nurses' retention and patient care quality. This study aimed to examine the relationships between structural empowerment and nurse and patient-reported outcomes and the mediating role of control over nursing practices in these relationships. This correlational and cross-sectional study was carried out from September 2018 to May 2019 at two public hospitals in Turkey. We recruited staff nurses (n = 319) working in the inpatient units of these hospitals and their patients (n = 319). Data were collected using self-report measures from staff nurses and patients. It was determined that structural empowerment and control over nursing practices had a positive relationship with job satisfaction and nursing care quality, as well as a negative relationship with intention to turnover; however, there was no relationship with patient-reported outcomes. Control over nursing practices partially mediated the relationship between structural empowerment and outcomes of job satisfaction and nursing care quality. This study indicates that promoting the structural empowerment of nurses and ensuring that they have control over practice will increase job satisfaction and quality of care. Nurse managers can increase nurses' job satisfaction and quality of care by creating supportive work environments and ensuring they have control over nursing practices.

Levels of psychological capital among nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

To systematically evaluate the available literature about overall levels of psychological capital among nurses.

BACKGROUND

Psychological capital is described as a positive mental state associated with nurses' mental health, quality of care and patient outcomes.

METHODS

A search was carried out using PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and Chinese Database, including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Biological Medical (CBM), WanFang and Weipu Database from the inception of the databases until October 2021. Subsequently, two researchers identified and reviewed the literature and assessed the risk of bias. A random-effects model was conducted to achieve pooled estimates of psychological capital scales.

RESULTS

The pooled mean score of the psychological capital scale was 4.21 (95% CI, 4.07-4.35). For subdimensions such as hope, optimism, self-efficacy and resilience, the score was 4.12 (95% CI, 4.11-4.12), 4.34 (95% CI, 4.34-4.34), 4.50 (95% CI, 4.50-4.51) and 4.34 (95% CI, 4.33-4.34), respectively. Subgroup analyses indicated that nurses practising in Asia and intensive care units might have experienced lower psychological capital levels. In addition, significant differences were noted in studies with sample size and publication year. Studies with a large sample size reported a higher psychological capital than those with a small sample size. The pooled mean scores of psychological capital were higher in 2014-2018 than in 2019-2021. Meta-regression further revealed that geographic regions of participants might be a source of heterogeneity, and the Asian region had 32.23% of the heterogeneity between studies, and the African region had 18.71%.

CONCLUSION

This review is the first to synthesize published research and calculate a pooled score of psychological capital in nurses. These findings indicated that nurses reported a medium-high level of psychological capital, and there was significant heterogeneity.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY

Administrators and policymakers should concentrate on nurses' psychological capital and tactically integrate psychological capital into nursing vocational training programs.

The role of psychological capital in the relationship between nurses' job satisfaction and turnover intention

PURPOSE

To find out whether psychological capital has a mediating role in the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intention on nurses.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study. 466 nurses participated in this study. Data were collected via paper-and-pencil format using Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, Psychological Capital Questionnaire and Turnover Intention Scale.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings revealed effects of poor psychological capital among nurses. The effect of psychological capital was statistically significant and it partially mediated job satisfaction and turnover intention.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Initiative sand training programs should be planned to improve nurses' attitudes towards psychological capital levels.

Psychological capital has a positive correlation with humanistic care ability among nurses

Objective

With the improvement in health awareness, humanistic care ability of nurses has become a focus of public attention. The aim of the study was to confirm the relationship between psychological capital and humanistic care ability of nurses, and to provide suggestions on improving the humanistic care ability of nurses.

Methods

A cross-section survey was conducted. Three hundred thirty-nine nurses were recruited from a tertiary general hospital in Taizhou, China. Psychological capital and humanistic care ability were measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis were performed to analyze the correlation between psychological capital and humanistic care ability.

Results

The psychological capital and humanistic care ability scores were 91.57 ± 13.96 and 189.08 ± 20.37, respectively. Differences in psychological capital scores across professional titles (F = 4.88, p = 0.01), departments (F = 3.69, p < 0.001), years of work (F = 4.68, p < 0.001), and marital status (t = 3.25, p < 0.001) were statistically significant. There were statistical differences for the humanistic care ability scores among nurses based on marital status (p = 0.01). The total psychological capital scores and the four sub-dimensions scores were positively correlated with the humanistic care ability scores among nurses. Self-efficacy was the main predictor of nurses’ humanistic care ability.

Conclusion

Psychological capital positively affected the humanistic care ability of nurses. Self-efficacy was the main predictor of humanistic care ability. Nursing managers can formulate strategies from the perspective of positive psychology to improve humanistic care ability of nurses.

Nursing in Primary Health Care: association between leadership, psychological capital, and burnout implications

OBJECTIVES

to verify the association between authentic leadership and burnout syndrome in Primary Health Care nursing professionals and analyze the relationship between positive psychological capital and burnout syndrome in subordinate nursing professionals.

METHODS

a field, descriptive-exploratory, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, developed with the nursing team, in Basic Health Units in the city of São Paulo, with the application of the sociodemographic questionnaires, Burnout Characterization Scale [Escala de Caracterização do Burnout], Authentic Leadership Questionnaire and Psychological Capital Questionnaire.

RESULTS

in leaders' perception, there was no evidence of significant associations between burnout and authentic leadership scales. There was a significant negative association of the burnout scale dimensions with the leadership dimensions regarding the subordinates. There was evidence of significant negative associations in the burnout scores with the scores of the psychological questionnaire dimensions.

CONCLUSIONS

in nursing, burnout is associated with authentic leadership and psychological capital.

The impact of psychological capital on turnover intention among Chinese nurses: A moderated mediation model

AIMS

This study examined how the mediating effect of psychological distress and the moderating role of social support influence the connection between psychological capital and turnover intention among Chinese nurses.

BACKGROUND

Nurses play a crucial role in medical and health services, but turnover intentions are common among them.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 4,865 nurses in China. The Chinese Psychological Capital Questionnaire, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, Social Support Rating Scale, and Turnover Intention Scale were used to gather data. Bootstrap and simple slope methods were used to test the mediating effect of psychological distress and the moderating effect of social support.

RESULTS

Psychological capital had a significant direct impact on turnover intention among nurses (B = -0.040, t = -10.032, P < 0.001). Psychological distress had a mediation effect of 46.89% between psychological capital and turnover intention. Moreover, social support had a moderating role in the relationship between psychological distress and psychological capital and between psychological distress and turnover intention.

CONCLUSIONS

Psychological capital correlated negatively with psychological distress and turnover intention and indirectly influenced turnover intention through psychological distress. Social support moderated the first and second half of the path in the mediating model of psychological distress. These findings have implications for early intervention for and the prevention of turnover intention in nurses.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT

This study's findings can inform the design of effective nurse support programs to reduce the impact of psychological distress on turnover intention among nurses.

Demographic Factors and Job Characteristics Associated With Burnout in Chinese Female Nurses During Controlled COVID-19 Period: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: To investigate the prevalence of burnout syndrome among Chinese female nurses during the controlled coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) period and explore its associated socio-demographic factors and job characteristics. Methods: With the multistage, stratified sampling method, a cross-sectional online survey was conducted from September to October 2020 in China. The survey tool included revised Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) with 15 items, socio-demographic and job characteristics. Univariate logistic regression analysis and multivariate factor logistic regression analysis were used to identify the risk factors for burnout of female nurses. Results: During controlled COVID-19 period in China, the overall prevalence of burnout symptoms among Chinese female nurses was 60.2% with a breakdown in severity as follows: 451 (39.8 %) mild, 163 (14.4%) moderate, and 68 (6.0%) severe burnout. Little variance was reported for burnout symptoms according to job tenure (Waldχ ² = 14.828, P < 0.05,odds ratio [OR] <1), monthly salary income (Waldχ ² = 12.460, P < 0.05, OR <1), and night shift (Waldχ ² = 3.821, P < 0.05, OR > 1). Conclusion: Burnout symptoms among Chinese female nurses were prevalent and associated with job tenure, monthly salary income, and night shift. Female nurses who were with shorter job tenure, worked at night shifts, and had lower monthly salaries tended to exhibit increasing high-level burnout than their counterparts. This study serves as an implication for administrators and policy-makers to improve the work conditions of nurses for promoting overall healthcare service quality.

Enfermagem na Atenção Primária à Saúde: associação entre liderança, capital psicológico e implicações no burnout

RESUMO Objetivos: verificar a associação entre liderança autêntica e síndrome de burnout em profissionais de enfermagem da Atenção Primária à Saúde e analisar a relação entre capital psicológico positivo e síndrome de burnout em profissionais de enfermagem liderados. Métodos: estudo de campo, descritivo-exploratório, transversal, de abordagem quantitativa, desenvolvido com a equipe de enfermagem, em Unidades Básicas de Saúde do município de São Paulo, com aplicação dos questionários sociodemográfico, Escala de Caracterização do Burnout, Authentic Leadership Questionnaire e Psychological Capital Questionnaire. Resultados: na percepção dos líderes, não houve evidências de associações significantes entre as escalas de burnout e liderança autêntica. Com relação aos liderados, observou-se associação negativa significante das dimensões da escala de burnout com as dimensões de liderança. Nas associações dos escores de burnout com escores do questionário de capital psicológico, observaram se evidências de associações negativas significantes. Conclusões: na enfermagem, o burnout está associado com liderança autêntica e capital psicológico.

The influence of mobile phone addiction and work procrastination on burnout among newly graduated Chinese nurses

PURPOSE

The study was conducted to explore the relationship between mobile phone addiction, work procrastination, and burnout among newly graduated nurses.

DESIGN AND METHODS

A cross-sectional survey involving 220 newly graduated nurses in China was conducted from June to July 2020.

FINDINGS

Approximately 60.9% of newly graduated nurses experienced occupational burnout; 72.7% of newly graduated nurses were characterized by moderate or greater procrastination and mobile phone addiction was at a moderate level. Mobile phone addiction and work procrastination were significant factors leading to emotional exhaustion and cynicism. Work procrastination was also an independent predictor of reduced professional efficacy.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Reducing the level of mobile phone addiction and work procrastination among newly graduated nurses might be effective for burnout prevention.

Study on the Formation Mechanism of Medical and Health Organization Staff's Emergency Preparedness Behavioral Intention: From the Perspective of Psychological Capital

Medical and Health Organization (MHO) staff's emergency preparedness awareness and behaviors are essential variables that affect public health emergency response effectiveness. Based on the theory of psychological capital and the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study discusses the mechanism of the psychological characteristics of MHO staff on their emergency preparedness behavioral intention (EPBI). To verify the research model, we conducted a web-based questionnaire survey among 243 MHO staff from China and analyzed the data using the structural equation modeling software, AMOS 24.0 (IBM, New York, United States). The empirical results reveal that psychological capital significantly affected cognitive processes theorized by TPB. This study suggests that the positive psychological capital of MHO staff should be developed and managed to improve their EPBI.

Perceptions of Authentic Nurse Leadership and Work Environment and the Pandemic Impact for Nurse Leaders and Clinical Nurses

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to determine the pandemic impact on the relationship between nurses' perception of the authentic nurse leadership (ANL) of their manager and their perception of the work environment.

BACKGROUND

Both ANL and healthy work environment (HWE) contribute to staff and patient outcomes. Our 1st study of these 2 variables revealed a positive relationship. Will this be upheld in a pandemic year?

METHODS

More than 5000 nurses from a national sample participated in a cross-sectional, correlational, descriptive study using the Authentic Nurse Leadership Questionnaire, the Critical Elements of a Healthy Work Environment Scale, and a pandemic impact on practice question.

RESULTS

Overall, nurses perceived ANL and HWE were present despite a high level of pandemic impact; however, when clinical nurses were separated from managers/directors, HWE was not present for frontline nurses. The moderate correlation of ANL and HWE was replicated in this larger study.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the 2nd study of the positive relationship between ANL and HWE using these models, supporting ANL as an essential standard of a HWE. ANL was present for clinical nurses in a pandemic year signaling that nurse leaders rose to meet frontline leadership needs. HWE was present overall, but not for clinical nurses. Leadership is essential to work environments and outcomes especially in times of crisis and significant change.

The effect of role-related stressors on nurses' burnout syndrome: The mediating role of work-related stress

PURPOSE

This study sought to investigate the effects of role conflict, role ambiguity, and workload on burnout syndrome among clinical nurses working in university hospitals and the mediating role of work-related stress in these effects.

DESIGN AND METHODS

Cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was conducted. Data from 386 nurses were evaluated. The research variables were analyzed using statistical methods such as factor analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, Sobel tests, and bootstrapping method.

FINDINGS

It was determined that role conflict, role ambiguity, workload, and work-related stress affect nurses' burnout significantly and work-related stress has a mediator role between burnout and the independent variables.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Nurses' burnout syndrome can be prevented if managerial practices to reduce the sources of role-related stressors and work-related stress are implemented by managers.

The development of a shortened, Korean version of the Anticipated Turnover Scale for hospital nurses

This study was a psychometric validation of a Korean version of the Anticipated Turnover Scale (ATS) involving translation, transcultural adaptation, and validation. We used data from a cross-sectional online survey of 287 Korean practicing nurses in hospitals. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) assessed the validity of the one-factor structure that was hypothesized in the original version. We removed any items that did not enhance the scale's reliability and validity. Test and retest reliability was performed on 206 of the nurses who completed the survey again two weeks later. The mean age of the 287 nurses was 33 years, and 278 (97%) of them were female. The final 6-item Korean version of the ATS demonstrated a satisfactory model fit in the CFA (χ²  = 22.67; degree of freedom = 9; goodness-of-fit index= 0.97; comparative fit index = 0.98; Tucker-Lewis Index = 0.97; root mean square error of approximation = 0.07; and standard root mean residual = 0.03). The intraclass correlation coefficient with the test-retest reliability for the 2-week interval was 0.81, with a good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.85; McDonald's omega coefficient reliability = 0.92). The 6-item revised ATS is a reliable and valid scale to assess the turnover intention of Korean nurses who work in hospitals. It can be used in an acute setting and predict the anticipated turnover rate for monitoring purposes.

A causal model of thriving at work in Chinese nurses

AIM

To develop and test the first causal model of thriving at work in Chinese nurses.

BACKGROUND

Nurses' ability to thrive at their work is critical to retain qualified nurses and meet the needs of a constantly changing health environment. However, this is a poorly researched area.

INTRODUCTION

Thriving at work refers to the feeling of vitality and learning at work, which are evidenced to be solidly associated with nurses' development. Only a few factors have been explored regarding the effects of thriving at work.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was undertaken using stratified random sampling. This involved 565 nurses from five general hospitals in Dali city, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China. Data were collected from April to September 2019 using seven instruments. The model was constructed and tested using the Analysis of Moment Structure program and reported using the STROBE checklist.

RESULTS

All model variables provided direct and indirect effects to the outcome. The final model fitted the empirical data with acceptable indices.

DISCUSSION

Predicting variables of workplace mindfulness, authentic leadership, workplace violence, organizational justice and years of experience were found to affect thriving at work directly and indirectly. Psychological capital and perceived organizational support mediated the effects between predicting variables to the outcome.

CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY

Recommendations for nursing and health leaders are provided to improve nurses' thriving at work by building fair, supportive, and safe working environments, improving head nurses' authentic leadership and cultivating nurses' mindfulness. Policies need to be promulgated to improve and regulate the nurse-patient ratio and to eliminate violence against Chinese nurses.

Association between psychological capital and spiritual care competencies of clinical nurses: A multicentre cross-sectional study

AIMS

To investigate the status of spiritual care competencies among clinical nurses and their relationships with psychological capital.

BACKGROUND

Limited knowledge is about the influence of positive personal characteristics on nurses' spiritual care competencies.

METHODS

A multicentre cross-sectional study. A total of 1717 nurses were recruited from nine separate Chinese hospitals. Online questionnaires were delivered through a local nursing association to assess socio-demographics, spiritual care competencies and psychological capital of nurses.

RESULTS

Nurses had mild-to-moderate levels of spiritual care competencies and moderate levels of psychological capital. Psychological capital and its two metrics (self-efficacy and hope), spiritual care education, professional qualification and shift work were the main predictors of spiritual care competencies (each p < .05).

CONCLUSION

The findings of the study show a positive relationship between psychological capital and spiritual care competencies of clinical nurses. Strengthening nurses' psychological capital could improve their spiritual care competencies.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGERS

Nurse managers and hospital administrators should better understand the value of psychological capital for nurses' capacity development. Effective interventions need to be implemented separately or combined with spiritual care education programmes to improve nurses' psychological capital and spiritual care competencies.

Positive Psychological Capital Mediates the Association between Burnout and Nursing Performance Outcomes among Hospital Nurses

Nursing burnout is associated with reduced nursing performance outcomes. Positive psychological capital is known to play an important role in improving workers’ job performance. However, the association among the three variables has rarely been addressed. The purpose of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to explore the association between burnout and nursing performance outcomes among Korean nurses working at a tertiary hospital and the mediating role of psychological capital in this relationship. Recruited through convenience sampling, a total of 285 nurses provided data on their demographic characteristics and completed a structured questionnaire consisting of items from the Professional Quality of Life Scale (burnout), Nursing Performance Scale, and Psychology Capital Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, student’s t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze data. The significance of the mediation effect was obtained using a bootstrap approach with the PROCESS macro. The mean age of participants was 30.51 years, and most participants were females (94.0%) and unmarried (71.6%); more than half (57.5%) experienced a severe workload. The average (±standard deviation) scores of burnout, nursing performance outcomes, and positive psychological capital were 28.77 ± 4.93, 2.98 ± 0.32, and 3.19 ± 0.45, respectively. Burnout was associated with nursing performance among clinical nurses (β = −0.20, p < 0.001). Positive psychological capital mediated the association between burnout and nursing performance outcomes (β = 0.41, p < 0.001). These findings contribute to the understanding that burnout among nurses could be reduced by increased positive psychological capital, which results in improved performance outcomes. The findings also indicate that interventions to improve positive psychological capital should be developed and implemented for nurses’ burnout management and improvement in nursing performance outcomes.
