Abstract
Excessive consumption of highly palatable foods rich in sugar and fat, often referred to as "junk" or "fast" foods, plays a central role in the development of obesity. The highly palatable characteristics of these foods activate hedonic and motivational mechanisms to promote food-seeking behavior and overeating, which is largely regulated by the brain reward system. Excessive junk food consumption can alter the functioning of this reward system, but exact mechanisms of these changes are still largely unknown. This study investigated whether long-term junk food consumption, in the form of Cafeteria (CAF) diet, can alter the reward system in adult, female Long-Evans rats, and whether different regimes of CAF diet influence the extent of these changes. To this end, rats were exposed to a 6-week diet with either standard chow, or ad libitum daily access to CAF diet, 30 % restricted but daily access to CAF diet, or one-day-a-week (intermittent) ad libitum access to CAF diet, after which c-Fos expression in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc), Prefrontal Cortex (PFC), and Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) following consumption of a CAF reward of choice was examined. We found that all CAF diet regimes decreased c-Fos expression in the NAc-shell when presented with a CAF reward, while no changes in c-Fos expression upon the different diet regimes were found in the PFC, and possibly the VTA. Our data suggests that long-term junk food exposure can affect the brain reward system, resulting in an attenuated activity of the NAc-shell.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing attention is being paid to lifestyle factors, such as nutrition and physical activity (PA), as potential complementary treatment options in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Previous research indicates that sugar and saturated fat intake may be linked to increased impulsivity, a core symptom of ADHD, whereas protein intake and PA may be related to reduced impulsivity. However, most studies rely on cross-sectional data that lack microtemporal resolution and ecological validity, wherefore questions of microtemporal dynamics (eg, is the consumption of foods high in sugar associated with increased impulsivity within minutes or hours?) remain largely unanswered. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has the potential to bridge this gap. OBJECTIVE This study is the first to apply EMA to assess microtemporal associations among macronutrient intake, PA, and state impulsivity in the daily life of adults with and without ADHD. METHODS Over a 3-day period, participants reported state impulsivity 8 times per day (signal-contingent), recorded food and drink intake (event-contingent), and wore an accelerometer. Multilevel 2-part models were used to study the association among macronutrient intake, PA, and the probability to be impulsive as well as the intensity of impulsivity (ADHD: n=36; control: n=137). RESULTS No association between macronutrient intake and state impulsivity was found. PA was not related to the intensity of impulsivity but to a higher probability to be impulsive (ADHD: β=-.09, 95% CI -0.14 to -0.04; control: β=-.03, 95% CI -0.05 to -0.01). No evidence was found that the combined intake of saturated fat and sugar amplified the increase in state impulsivity and that PA alleviated the positive association between sugar or fat intake and state impulsivity. CONCLUSIONS Important methodological considerations are discussed that can contribute to the optimization of future EMA protocols. EMA research in the emerging field of nutritional psychiatry is still in its infancy; however, EMA is a highly promising and innovative approach as it offers insights into the microtemporal dynamics of psychiatric symptomology, dietary intake, and PA in daily life.

Abstract
The mechanisms underlying chronic psychiatric-like impairments after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are currently unknown. The goal of the present study was to assess the role of diet and the gut microbiome in psychiatric symptoms after TBI. Rats were randomly assigned to receive a high-fat diet (HFD) or calorie-matched low-fat diet (LFD). After 2 weeks of free access, rats began training on the rodent gambling task (RGT), a measure of risky decision-making and motor impulsivity. After training, rats received a bilateral frontal TBI or a sham procedure and continued postinjury testing for 10 weeks. Fecal samples were collected before injury and 3-, 30-, and 60 days postinjury to evaluate the gut microbiome. HFD altered the microbiome, but ultimately had low-magnitude effects on behavior and did not modify functional outcomes after TBI. Injury-induced functional deficits were far more robust; TBI substantially decreased optimal choice and increased suboptimal choice and motor impulsivity on the RGT. TBI also affected the microbiome, and a model comparison approach revealed that bacterial diversity measured 3 days postinjury was predictive of chronic psychiatric-like deficits on the RGT. A functional metagenomic analysis identified changes to dopamine and serotonin synthesis pathways as a potential candidate mechanism. Thus, the gut may be a potential acute treatment target for psychiatric symptoms after TBI, as well as a biomarker for injury and deficit severity. Abstract
The prefrontal cortex plays a central role in the control of complex cognitive processes including action control and decision making. It also shows a specific pattern of delayed maturation related to unique behavioral changes during adolescence and allows the development of adult cognitive processes. The adolescent brain is extremely plastic and critically vulnerable to external insults. Related to this vulnerability, adolescence is also associated with the emergence of numerous neuropsychiatric disorders involving alterations of prefrontal functions. Within prefrontal microcircuits, the dopamine and the endocannabinoid systems have widespread effects on adolescent-specific ontogenetic processes. In this review, we highlight recent advances in our understanding of the maturation of the dopamine system and the endocannabinoid system in the prefrontal cortex during adolescence. We discuss how they interact with GABA and glutamate neurons to modulate prefrontal circuits and how they can be altered by different environmental events leading to long-term neurobiological and behavioral changes at adulthood. Finally, we aim to identify several future research directions to help highlight gaps in our current knowledge on the maturation of these microcircuits.

Abstract
Carbohydrates are important macronutrients in human and rodent diet patterns that play a key role in crucial metabolic pathways and provide the necessary energy for proper body functioning. Sugar homeostasis and intake require complex hormonal and nervous control to proper body energy balance. Added sugar in processed food results in metabolic, cardiovascular, and nervous disorders. Epidemiological reports have shown enhanced consumption of sweet products in children and adults, especially in reproductive age and in pregnant women, which can lead to the susceptibility of offspring’s health to diseases in early life or in adulthood and proneness to mental disorders. In this review, we discuss the impacts of high-sugar diet (HSD) or sugar intake during the perinatal and/or postnatal periods on neural and behavioural disturbances as well as on the development of substance use disorder (SUD). Since several emotional behavioural disturbances are recognized as predictors of SUD, we also present how HSD enhances impulsive behaviour, stress, anxiety and depression. Apart from the influence of HSD on these mood disturbances, added sugar can render food addiction. Both food and addictive substances change the sensitivity of the brain rewarding neurotransmission signalling. The results of the collected studies could be important in assessing sugar intake, especially via maternal dietary patterns, from the clinical perspective of SUD prevention or pre-existing emotional disorders. Methodology: This narrative review focuses on the roles of a high-sugar diet (HSD) and added sugar in foods and on the impacts of glucose and fructose on the development of substance use disorder (SUD) and on the behavioural predictors of drugs abuse. The literature was reviewed by two authors independently according to the topic of the review. We searched the PubMed and Scopus databases and Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute open access scientific journals using the following keyword search strategy depending on the theme of the chapter: “high-sugar diet” OR “high-carbohydrate diet” OR “sugar” OR “glucose” OR “fructose” OR “added sugar” AND keywords. We excluded inaccessible or pay-walled articles, abstracts, conference papers, editorials, letters, commentary, and short notes. Reviews, experimental studies, and epidemiological data, published since 1990s, were searched and collected depending on the chapter structure. After the search, all duplicates are thrown out and full texts were read, and findings were rescreened. After the selection process, appropriate papers were included to present in this review.

Abstract
Stress and genotype elicit changes in impulse control in a range of species that are attributable to adaptations in both the central and peripheral nervous system. We examined aspects of this mechanism in the horse by assessing the effect of a dopamine receptor genotype (DRD4) and central dopaminergic tone (measured via spontaneous blink rate [SBR] and behavioral initiation rate [BIR]), on measures of impulsivity, compulsivity (3-choice serial reaction time task) and sympathetic/ parasympathetic system balance (heart rate variability [HRV]). Genotype did not have a significant effect on any of the parameters measured. SBR but not BIR correlated significantly with levels of impulsivity. There was no clear association of HRV parameters with either measures of central dopaminergic activity or impulsivity/compulsivity. Overall, some elements of the data suggest that the horse may be a useful animal model for assessing the genetic and environmental factors that lead to the physiological and behavioral phenotype of human addiction, particularly when considering the relationship between central dopaminergic tone and impulsivity.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with changes to taste perception and brain reward circuitry. It is important to understand how these effects alter the preference for palatable foods and drinks, given that these are widely consumed, and leading risk factors for obesity. This study examined the effects of diet-induced obesity on sweet taste preference by analysing the microstructure of licking for sugar solutions and assessing pERK expression in the nucleus accumbens shell and insula. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed standard chow (Control; n = 16) or a varied, palatable cafeteria diet (Caf; n = 16) for 12 weeks. Two-choice preference tests between 2%, 8% and 32% sucrose solutions were conducted at baseline and in weeks 11-12 of the diet. Rats in the Caf group trebled energy intake and doubled weight gain relative to controls. In tests held under water restriction after 11 weeks of diet, the Control group reliably preferred higher sucrose concentrations (i.e., 32% > 8% > 2%). Relative to controls, the Caf group showed a stronger preference for 32% vs. 2% sucrose, lower preference for 32% vs. 8% sucrose, and were indifferent to 8% vs. 2% sucrose. Testing without water restriction increased preference for higher sucrose concentrations in both groups. Chronic Caf diet increased the latency to lick, decreased total licks and reduced alternations between spouts, but did not alter lick cluster size, a measure of hedonic appraisal, on any test. Following a final exposure to a novel sucrose concentration, neuronal activity (pERK) in the insula and nucleus accumbens shell was significantly reduced in the Caf group. Results indicate that differences in 'liking' do not underlie obesity-induced changes to sweet taste preference.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is a clear association between obesity and impulsivity. While exercise can suppress weight gain and decrease impulsive choice (IC), the relationship between impulsivity, the consumption of palatable, energy dense diets, and exercise is unclear. We examined IC before and after Western diet (WD) exposure in rats of both sexes and whether exercise would rescue any diet-mediated increases in IC. Our hypotheses were twofold: first, increased impulsivity would be associated with higher WD preference in a positive feedback loop and second, increased WD consumption would impair both peripheral and central insulin signaling, both of which exercise would attenuate. METHODS Following baseline assessment of IC through a delay discounting task, rats were divided into naïve, sedentary (Sed), or wheel running (WR) groups for a 5-week WR and two-diet choice period after which rats underwent an oral glucose (OGTT) and insulin tolerance test (ITT) in addition to a re-test of IC. Insulin induced Akt-GSK3β signaling in the brain was examined using western blot. RESULTS All Sed rats preferred the WD diet, and all WR rats initially avoided the WD but subsequently reversed their avoidance to preference with females reversing earlier than males. Exercise suppressed weight gain and adiposity to a greater extent in males than females. Only WR males showed improved glucose clearance during OGTT, but both male and female WR rats had a faster recovery of hypoglycemia during ITT. Furthermore, WR rescued WD-induced deficits in hypothalamic Akt-GSK3β signaling in males but not females. In the prefrontal cortex, however, WD and WR both reduced Akt-GSK3β signaling in males but not females. There were no sex differences in IC at baseline, and all rats made more impulsive choices during the re-test independent of diet, sex, or exercise. DISCUSSION The results suggest that while exercise may have a greater efficacy at attenuating diet-mediated metabolic dysregulation in males, it has some beneficial effects for females and highlights the need to develop sex-specific interventions for restoring energy balance.

Abstract
Unhealthful foods are convenient, ubiquitous, and inexpensive. Overconsumption of unhealthful foods can result in disease states such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes. In addition to the physiological consequences of unhealthful foods, research in rats has shown that diets high in processed fat and sugar induce impulsive choice behavior. Research in humans has demonstrated a link between metabolic health and impulsive choice, but most investigations have not included diet. We investigated how dietary fat intake interacts with body fat percentage, fasting glucose, insulin response, and systemic inflammation levels to predict impulsive choices in humans. Participants were split into either Control (<35% calories from fat) or High-Fat (≥40% calories from fat) groups based on self-reported dietary intake, completed an impulsive choice task, and underwent testing to determine their body fat, glucose, insulin response, and inflammation levels. High-fat diets were not predictive of impulsive choices, but added sugar was predictive. Body fat percentage was associated with impulsive choices only in the group who reported consuming high-fat diets. In addition, fasting glucose was associated with impulsive choices in the control group. Therefore, metabolic health and dietary fat intake interacted to predict impulsive choices. These findings indicate that knowledge of dietary patterns coupled with metabolic health markers may help us better understand impulsive choices, thereby improving our ability to target individuals who could benefit from interventions to reduce impulsive choice behavior, with the goal of promoting more self-controlled food choices.

Abstract
Objectives: One factor contributing to the development of obesity is overeating palatable food. The palatability of food is driven by specific energy yielding combinations and flavor profiles that may contribute to its overconsumption. In rodents, restricted access to palatable food (PF) is a strong stimulus to trigger binge-type eating behavior (BTE), food anticipatory activity (FAA), effort behaviors and withdrawal symptoms. This is accompanied by plastic changes in corticolimbic areas associated with motivation and reward responses. Palatable food contains mainly a mixture of fat and sugar, thus, the contribution of each macronutrient for the behavioral and neuronal changes is unclear.Methods: In this study, Wistar rats were exposed to restricted access to 50% fat rich diet (FRD) or 50% sugar rich diet (SRD) in order to compare the intensity of BTE, FAA, effort behaviors and withdrawal responses.Results: In corticolimbic areas, c-Fos activation and ΔFosB accumulation were evaluated. After an acute exposition, rats ate more SRD than FRD, but FDR stimulated higher c-Fos. After chronic administration, the FDR group exhibited higher levels of BTE and FAA; this was associated with higher c-Fos and accumulation of ΔFosB in the corticolimbic system. Similar effects in the FRD group were observed after one week of withdrawal.Discussion: Present data indicate that the fat rich diet is a stronger stimulus than the sugar rich diet for the development of wanting behavior for reward and the underlying plastic changes in the corticolimbic system. The differential effects may be due to the differing caloric density of the diets.

However, intake of fats and carbohydrates may have differential effects on motivation. Previously it was shown that BLE produces an increase in operant responding for vegetable shortening, but others were unable to replicate the finding using sucrose as the reinforcer. Our aim was to determine if BLE behavior induced with a cafeteria-like diet (CaLD) with several options with fat content would produce an increment in performance. Male Wistar rats were trained under an exponential progressive ratio schedule of sucrose reinforcement; thereafter, the limited access model was used to induce BLE using CaLD options. Finally, subjects were tested for increments in break points (BPs) in the progressive ratio schedule. Rats with intermittent access to CaLD options showed a clear BLE with an escalation in their intake; however they showed compensatory decrements of chow intake that rendered a similar body weight gain to a continuous access group. Although we were unable to observe an increase in BPs after BLE we were able to observe a protection against the decrements of BP previously observed with sugar. Different mechanisms for processing high fat and high carbohydrate reinforcers are variables worth exploring to gain a better understanding of BLE behavior in rodent models.

Abstract
The dietary pattern in industrialized countries has changed substantially over the past century due to technological advances in agriculture, food processing, storage, marketing, and distribution practices. The availability of highly palatable, calorically dense foods that are shelf-stable has facilitated a food environment where overconsumption of foods that have a high percentage of calories derived from fat (particularly saturated fat) and sugar is extremely common in modern Westernized societies. In addition to being a predictor of obesity and metabolic dysfunction, consumption of a Western diet (WD) is related to poorer cognitive performance across the lifespan. In particular, WD consumption during critical early life stages of development has negative consequences on various cognitive abilities later in adulthood. This review highlights rodent model research identifying dietary, metabolic, and neurobiological mechanisms linking consumption of a WD during early life periods of development (gestation, lactation, juvenile and adolescence) with behavioral impairments in multiple cognitive domains, including anxiety-like behavior, learning and memory function, reward-motivated behavior, and social behavior. The literature supports a model in which early life WD consumption leads to long-lasting neurocognitive impairments that are largely dissociable from WD effects on obesity and metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesity and binge eating disorder are associated with high levels of impulsivity, but the causal role of eating and palatable food in these associations is unclear. Studies in rodents show that a high-fat diet can increase one aspect of impulsivity (impulsive action); it is less clear, however, whether a dissociable aspect of impulsivity (impulsive choice) is similarly affected. Hence, the aim of this study was to ascertain whether chronic exposure to a high-fat diet would alter impulsive choice. METHODS Male rats were maintained on either a high-fat or control chow diet for two weeks ad libitum. They then underwent equi-caloric food restriction for the duration of the experiment, with each group maintained on their respective diet. To measure impulsive choice, rats were trained on a delay discounting task (DDT) in which they made discrete choices between a lever that delivered a small food reward immediately and a lever that delivered a large food reward accompanied by systematically increasing delays. Upon reaching stable performance on the DDT, rats were given acute systemic injections of amphetamine prior to testing in the DDT to determine whether increased monoamine transmission affected impulsive choice differently in the two diet groups. Lastly, subjects were tested on a progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement to assess motivation for a sucrose reward. RESULTS There was no significant effect of the high-fat diet on impulsive choice. Further, amphetamine decreased choice of the large, delayed reward (increased impulsive choice) to the same extent in both groups. Exposure to the high-fat diet did, however, increase motivation to obtain a sucrose reward. CONCLUSIONS These experiments reveal that, under conditions that do not promote weight gain, a chronic high-fat diet does not affect impulsive choice in a delay discounting task. The data are surprising in light of findings showing that this same diet alters impulsive action, and highlight the necessity of further research to elucidate relationships between palatable food consumption and impulsivity.

Male Wistar rats were trained under an exponential progressive ratio schedule of sucrose reinforcement; thereafter, the limited access model was used to induce BLE. Finally, subjects were tested for increments in break points (BPs) in the progressive ratio schedule. We were unable to observe an increase in BPs after BLE. No increments in BPs were observed when a distinctive flavor (vanilla-flavored sucrose) was correlated with BLE induction and reinforcement, or when different types of ratio progression in the operant schedules were employed. However, rats adjusted their BPs according to reinforcer concentration after BLE induction, demonstrating that valuation (cost/benefit decision) of reinforcers was intact. Extent of training, alterations of reward processing after extended exposure to sucrose, and different mechanisms for processing high fat and high carbohydrate reinforcers are variables worth exploring to gain a better understanding of BLE behavior in rodent models.

Abstract
Background and Objectives The relative reinforcing value (RRV) of food is associated with increased energy intake and obesity and increases in RRV of food after repeated intake (sensitization) are related cross-sectionally and prospectively to higher BMI in adults. We examined the factors, such as delay discounting (DD), associated with sensitization of RRV of high energy density (HED) and low energy density (LED) food and how sensitization relates to zBMI in adolescents. We hypothesized that sensitization to HED food would be positively associated with zBMI, that sensitization to LED food would be negatively associated with zBMI, that DD would be associated with HED sensitization, and that LED sensitization and DD would moderate the relationships between HED sensitization and zBMI. Subjects and Methods A population-based sample of 207 adolescents without obesity, aged 12 – 14 years was studied from June 2016 – March 2019. The RRV of LED and HED foods were measured before and after two weeks of daily consumption along with zBMI and other potential factors related to eating and weight, including dietary restraint, hunger, food liking, and delay discounting (DD). Hierarchical regression models were used to determine the associations between these factors and sensitization and zBMI. We also examined LED sensitization and DD as potential moderators of the relationship between sensitization and zBMI. Results As hypothesized, dietary restraint and sensitization to HED food were associated with greater zBMI. Contrary to our original hypotheses, DD was not associated with sensitization, there was no relationship between sensitization to LED food and zBMI and neither LED sensitization or DD moderated the relationship between HED sensitization and zBMI. Conclusions Sensitization to repeated intake of HED food was associated with higher zBMI in adolescents without obesity. Sensitization may be a novel behavioral phenotype that may relate to overweight in youth.

Abstract
Impulsive choice in humans is typically measured using hypothetical delays and rewards. In two experiments, we determined how experiencing the delay and/or the reward affected impulsive choice behavior. Participants chose between two amounts of real or hypothetical candy (M&Ms) after a real or hypothetical delay (5-30 s), where choosing the shorter delay was the impulsive choice. Experiment 1 compared choice behavior on a real-delay, real-reward (RD/RR) task where participants received M&Ms after experiencing the delays versus a real-delay, hypothetical-reward (RD/HR) task where participants accumulated hypothetical M&Ms after experiencing the delays. Experiment 2 compared the RD/HR task and a hypothetical-delay, hypothetical-reward (HD/HR) task where participants accumulated hypothetical M&Ms after hypothetical delays. The results indicated that choices did not differ between real and hypothetical M&Ms (Experiment 1), and participants were less sensitive to delay and more larger-later (LL)-preferring with hypothetical delays compared to real delays (Experiment 2). Experiencing delays to reward may be important for modeling real-world impulsive choices where delays are typically experienced. These novel experiential impulsive choice tasks may improve translational methods for comparison with animal models and may be improved procedures for predicting real-life choice behavior in humans.
