Abstract
The zygomatic root, along with other key craniofacial features, is hypothesized to play a crucial role in strengthening the face in response to stresses and strains related to feeding. As such, it has been cited as indicative of dietary specialization among fossil taxa, although it remains unknown how variable zygomatic arch root position is among living primates, and whether its positioning predicts differences in diet. We test whether primates that consume more mechanically challenging foods possess more anteriorly positioned zygomatic roots compared to those consuming less challenging foods. Zygomatic root position, as defined by the zygomaxillare landmark, was identified and recorded from digital images and physical specimens of adult primate crania. Data were collected from 33 haplorhine species (n = 722). Published data were used to assign species to a dietary type based on patterns of overall consumption along with reliance on especially challenging foods. Pairwise comparisons between mechanically challenging (hard and/or tough) and less mechanically challenging (soft) consumers found significant differences (p < 0.05) in the position of the zygomatic root in 17 of 20 pairs, 11 of which supported the prediction that a more mechanically challenging diet is associated with a more anteriorly placed zygomatic root. PGLS analysis found no significant effect of phylogeny on root position. This suggests that a more anteriorly positioned zygomatic root is useful for identifying dietary specialization in some taxa but is not required for consuming a mechanically challenging diet given that other craniofacial and behavioral factors can facilitate the consumption of such foods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This in vitro study aims to compare the fracture resistance of three CAD/CAM materials used in endocrown restoration of interproximal defects in maxillary premolars. MATERIALS AND METHODS 45 maxillary premolars extracted as part of orthodontic treatment were included. Following standardized root canal treatment, all teeth were prepared into Mesial-Occlusal (MO) cavity types. The samples were then randomly divided into three groups: LD [repaired with lithium disilicate glass ceramics (IPS e.max CAD)], VE [treated with polymer-infiltrated ceramics (Vita Enamic)], and LU [repaired with resin-based nanoceramics (Lava Ultimate)]. Axial static loading was applied using a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min until fracture, and fracture resistance and failure modes were recorded. RESULTS Regarding Fracture Resistance Values (FRVs), the LD group exhibited significantly higher values than the other two groups, VE (P = 0.028) and LU (P = 0.005), which showed no significant difference (P = 0.778). On the other hand, regarding failure modes, the LD group had a higher prevalence of irreparable fractures compared to the other two groups, VE (P < 0.001) and LU (P < 0.001), which showed no significant difference. CONCLUSIONS Although lithium disilicate glass ceramics exhibited higher FRVs, they had a lower repair probability. In contrast, polymer-infiltrated ceramics and resin-based nanoceramics contributed to tooth structure preservation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE For maxillary premolars with interproximal defects following root canal treatment, resin ceramic composites are recommended for restoration to enhance abutment teeth protection.

Abstract
This study assessed the masticatory function of participants wearing clear aligners in order to determine whether these devices can be worn even when eating and therefore worn to extend treatment time and boost treatment effectiveness. An intercontrol test was conducted on 20 patients who received Invisalign® treatment. Each participant was instructed to chew two pieces of Hue-Check Gum® chewing gum (one pink and the other blue) in 5, 10, and 20 cycles both with and without aligners. After being removed from the oral cavity, the gum was dried and pressed using a 1 × 50 × 50 mm model that was 3D printed with a transparent layer in between. After being scanned on both sides with a flatbed scanner at 600 dpi, the samples were saved as jpg files and subjected to an optoelectronic examination using ViewGum software. To validate the procedure, a control group from a different institution (University of Bern) was used. A statistical analysis of the data was carried out. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to confirm the normality of the samples. A one-way ANOVA test, a homogeneity of variance test, and a t-test did not reveal statistically significant differences between the two control groups, thus validating the methodology employed. In summary, clear aligners do not radically change the masticatory function while they are worn. As a result, clinicians can exploit the aligners for chewing to obtain a better fit of the plastic material to the dental surface and to attachments. Treatment times for patients could also be shorter.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to review the literature related to the clinical performance and laboratory findings regarding fiber posts, as well as the cementation technique employed with their use. MATERIALS AND METHODS A literature search was performed using an electronic database, PubMed/Medline, between 2010 and 2023. The terms used were "intra coronal post, fiber post, post cementation, and post length". Titles and abstracts were initially screened, and a full-text assessment was conducted for those that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The reference list of the collected papers was also screened for further relevant citations. RESULTS In this work, 135 potentially eligible studies were analyzed. Titles and abstracts of 90 studies followed the inclusion criteria and were selected for a full-text assessment, resulting in 50 studies selected. Moreover, additional studies from relevant citations were included, totaling 57 studies. CONCLUSION According to the laboratory and clinical studies revised, the survival rate between fiber and prefabricated and cast metal posts was similar, and failures were mainly related to the loss of retention. The intra-canal post length of less than two-thirds of the root length presented successful results when ferrule was present. Furthermore, the ferrule increased the longevity of teeth restored with fiber posts. Additionally, the use of a surface treatment protocol for fiber posts and the adhesive cementation technique both contributed to the clinical success and longevity of the intra-canal post.

Abstract
Abstract Background/purpose: Overlay restorations can be used clinically as a treatment option to preserve natural dentine. However, whether the residual enamel thickness and overlay thickness affect the adhesion between the restoration and tooth is still unknown. This study was to investigate effects of the overlay thickness and residual enamel thickness on bonding strength. Materials and methods Overlays of different thicknesses were prepared with natural teeth which had 2, 4, and 6 mm of occlusal reduction (n = 10). Specimens were subjected to 10,000 cycles in water at 5-55 °C, and finally compressive strength tests were used to evaluate the bonding strength. Results All groups showed good bond strength (P > 0.05). The overlay restorations of different thicknesses reduced the preparation amount by 30.3%-7.2% and significantly preserved more of the tooth structure (P < 0.005). Compared to the control group, the overlay restoration increased the marginal fitness by about 0.67-0.88 times. The thermal cycling indicated that the decrease in the maximum bearing stress was due to the aging of the ceramic itself. Therefore, the thickness of the overlay had a greater influence on the compressive strength than the bond strength. Conclusion Based on the above this study recommends an overlay thickness of at least 2 mm in clinical practice. The aging test confirmed that adhesion between the overlay and teeth was quite firm and stable. This shows that a stable adhesive effect of the overlay can be used as a treatment option for preserving a greater amount of a tooth's structure.

Abstract
Pathological tooth wear is an escalating social problem. Occlusal veneers can be an alternative to traditional prosthetic restorations such as crowns, inlays, and onlays. BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to assess the fracture resistance of occlusal veneers made of various materials depending on their thickness. METHODS In total, 120 occlusal veneers were examined. The restorations were made of four ceramics: leucite LC (IPS Empress Esthetic), hybrid HC (Vita Enamic), lithium disilicate LDC (IPS e.max Press), and zirconium oxide ZOC (Ceramill Zolid HT). A total of 30 veneers were made of each material, 10 for each of the three thicknesses: 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm. The restorations were cemented on identical abutments duplicated from the developed phantom tooth 35 (KaVo) with composite cement (All Bond Universal). The samples prepared in this way were subjected to a compressive strength test in a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis of the results was performed. RESULTS The average fracture resistance of occlusal veneers made of zirconium oxide ceramic was 1086-1640 N, of lithium disilicate ceramics 456-1044 N, of hybrid ceramics 449-576 N, and of leucite ceramics 257-499 N. CONCLUSIONS Occlusal veneers made of ceramics, zirconium oxide and lithium disilicate, had the highest resistance to fractures. Restorations made of leucite ceramics turned out to be the least resistant to forces. The greater the thickness of the ceramic occlusal veneers, the greater their fracture resistance.

Abstract
To evaluate the fracture strength and the failure mode of endodontically treated molars restored with monolithic lithium disilicate and zirconia endocrowns and overlays. A total of 48 extracted mandibular molars were endodontically treated, decoronated 2 mm above the cementoenamel junction and divided into four 12-specimen groups. Group ELD: lithium disilicate endocrowns. Group EZ: monolithic zirconia endocrowns. Group OLD: lithium disilicate overlays. Group OZ: monolithic zirconia overlays. Overlays did not extend in the pulp chamber and endocrowns extended in the pulp chamber 2 mm. After adhesive bonding of the restorations, the specimens were subjected to thermocycling (×5000 cycles) and then to fracture resistance testing at lateral static loading (1 mm/min) at a universal testing machine. The failure mode of the specimens was qualitatively evaluated. Differences in means were compared using with t-tests for independent samples or Mann-Whitney test (p < 0.05). Weibull distribution analysis was also performed. Group ELD showed significantly higher fracture strength than all other groups (p = 0.001), and the highest Weibull modulus. Conclusions: Lithium disilicate endocrowns exhibit higher fracture strength and are more reliable compared to the other types of restorations examined. Endocrowns had more catastrophic failures compared to overlays.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore and characterize the effect of the discrepancy between crestal bone height (CB) and pulp chamber floor (PCF) in the fatigue performance of endodontically-treated teeth rehabilitated with an endocrown restoration. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 75 human molars free of defects, caries history or cracks were selected, then endodontically treated and randomly allocated into 5 groups (N = 15) according to the difference between PCF and CB, as follows: PCF 2 mm above, PCF 1 mm above, PCF leveled, PCF 1 mm below and PCF 2 mm below. Endocrown restorations were made with composite resin (Tetric N-Ceram, shade B3, Ivoclar) in 1.5 mm thickness and luted with a resin cement (Multilink N, Ivoclar) onto the dental elements. Monotonic testing was performed to define the fatigue parameters, and a cyclic fatigue test was used until failure of the assembly. The collected data were submitted to statistical survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier followed by Mantel-Cox and Weibull), fractographic analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were performed as complementary analyzes. RESULTS The PCF 2 mm below and PCF 1 mm below groups presented the best results regarding fatigue failure load (FFL) and number of cycles for failure (CFF) (p < 0.05), but presented no difference between each other (p > 0.05). The PCF leveled and PCF 1 mm above groups presented no statistical difference between them (p > 0.05), but performed better than the PCF 2 mm above group (p < 0.05). The rate of favorable failures of PCF 2 mm above, PCF 1 mm above, PCF leveled, PCF 1 mm below and PCF 2 mm below groups were 91.7%, 100%, 75%, 66.7% and 41.7%, respectively. FEA showed different stress magnitudes according to the pulp-chamber design. CONCLUSION The insertion level of the dental element to be rehabilitated with an endocrown interferes in the mechanical fatigue performance of the set. The discrepancy between the CB height and the PCF has a direct effect, where the higher the PCF in relation to the CB, the greater the risk of mechanical failure of the restored dental element.

Abstract
Objectives: the aim of this study was to examine the stress distribution of enamel, dentin, and restorative materials in sound first molar teeth with restored cavities with conventional resin composites and bulk–fill composites, as well as to determine their fracture lifetimes by using the three-dimensional finite element stress analysis method. Materials and Methods: an extracted sound number 26 tooth was scanned with a dental tomography device and recorded. Images were obtained as dicom files, and these files were transferred to the Mimics 12.00 program. In this program, different masks were created for each tooth tissue, and the density thresholds were adjusted manually to create a three-dimensional image of the tooth, and these were converted to a STL file. The obtained STL files were transferred to the Geomagic Design X program, and some necessary adjustments, such as smoothing, were made, and STP files were created. Cavity preparation and adhesive material layers were created by transferring STP files to the Solidworks program. Finally, a FE model was created in the ABAQUS program, and stress distributions were analyzed. Results: when the bulk–fill composite and conventional resin composite materials were used in the restoration of the cavity, the structures that were exposed to the most stress as a result of occlusal forces on the tooth were enamel, dentin, restorative material, and adhesive material. When the bulk–fill composite material was used in restoration, while the restorative material had the longest fracture life as a result of stresses, the enamel tissue had the shortest fracture life. When the conventional resin composite material was used as the restorative material, it had the longest fracture life, followed by dentin and enamel. Conclusion: when the bulk–fill composite material was used instead of the conventional resin composite material in the cavity, the stress values on enamel, dentin, and adhesive material increased as a result of occlusal forces, while the amount of stress on the restorative material decreased. In the fracture analysis, when the bulk–fill composite material was used instead of the conventional resin composite material, a decrease in the number of cycles required for the fracture of enamel, dentin, and restorative materials was observed as a result of the forces generated in the oral cavity.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the masticatory function of subjects with clear aligners and to propose a simple and repeatable method for the clinical and experimental evaluation of masticatory function. For the testing we used almonds, a natural substance that can be easily found and stored, has intermediate consistency and hardness, is insoluble in saliva, and has the ability easily lose the moisture absorbed in the mouth. Thirty-four subjects using the Invisalign® (Align Technology, Santa Clara, CA, USA) protocol were randomly selected. This was an “intercontrol test”, i.e., all subjects under the same conditions acted as controls but also as cases whilst wearing the clear aligners. Patients were asked to chew an almond for 20 s, once with aligners and once without aligners. The material was then dried, sieved, and weighted. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate any significative differences. In all our subjects, the efficiency of chewing with clear aligners was found to be comparable to the efficiency of chewing without clear aligners. In detail, the average weight after drying was 0.62 g without aligners and 0.69 g with aligners, while after sieving at 1 mm, the average weight was 0.08 g without aligners and 0.06 g with aligners. The average variation after drying was of 12%, and after sieving at 1 mm, it was 25%. In summary, there was no substantial difference between chewing with or without clear aligners. Despite some discomfort in chewing, the clear aligners were well tolerated by most subjects, who wore them without difficulty even during meals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Present a gnathodynamometer design that increases patient comfort, precision, and/or ease for the operator during bite force tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS A bite tip capable of pivoting 180° was tested on senior dental students in a double-blind trial. The tests were performed in teeth 11 and 16 with the bite tip on the long axis of the clamp and at an angle of 90° to the clamp. The sample was composed of 24 students, 13 males and 11 females, randomly divided into two groups: the operator group (OP), which was composed of 12 students, 7 males and 5 females, and the test group (TI), which was composed of 12 students, 6 males and 6 females. The operator and participants were asked to evaluate comfort and precision/ease in positioning the bite tip by attributing scores from 0 (total discomfort) to 10 (total comfort) during the test. RESULTS No difference was noted in tooth 11 (P > 0.05). In tooth 16, there was a statistically significant improvement (P < 0.01) for the participants tested and the operator using the pivoting bite tip. CONCLUSIONS The pivoting bite tip showed no difference in the comfort of the participants and operator precision when testing incisors; however, the tip showed a difference for both conditions in the molar region. The gnathodynamometer geometry showed good results in participant comfort and operator precision when used in bite force tests of the incisors and molars. Further investigations are needed to confirm whether these improvements influence the mean value and maximum bite force measurement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Bite force measurement is a method for obtaining important data to check the functional conditions of the stomatognathic system. With the aging of the world population, it has become important to check the quality of life during aging. The pivoting bite tip improves the comfort and precision of bite tests for the participants tested and for the operator, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the fatigue behavior of lithium disilicate crowns with a simplified anatomy against progressive cement/ceramic debonding scenarios. MATERIALS AND METHODS Lithium disilicate crowns were fabricated via CAD/CAM and luted onto a dentin analogue material using resin cement following the manufacturer's instructions. Then, the different crown regions were isolated with paraffin oil for the absence of chemical adhesion according to four experimental groups (n = 15): Shoulder; Shoulder + Axial; Fully isolated; and Control (no insulation/fully bonded). Load to failure tests (n = 3) were run to determine cyclic fatigue parameters, and the specimens were subsequently submitted to a cyclic fatigue test (n = 12) (initial load 200 N for 5000 cycles, step 100 N, 15,000 cycles/step, frequency 20 Hz) until cracks were observed, and later fracture. The data were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier + Mantel-Cox post-hoc tests for both outcomes (cracks and fracture). Fractographic, cross-sectional surface, and finite element (FEA) analyzes were performed. RESULTS When it comes to crack occurrence when the chemical adhesion to the occlusal surface is compromised, there is worsening (p < 0.05) in fatigue behavior compared to groups where the occlusal portion of the crown is still bonded. Considering fracture occurrence, there was no difference (p > 0.05) among the tested groups. All cracks occurred in the occlusal portion, first as a radial crack at the ceramic intaglio surface, and posteriorly unleashing a Hertzian cone crack at the top surface, resulting in fractures on the frontal walls. The interface analysis showed no interference of the insulating agent. FEA showed that as the isolated areas increased, there was also an increase in both tensile and shear stresses concentration in the crown and in the cement layer. CONCLUSION The chemical adhesion between cement and ceramic is essential for better fatigue behavior of lithium disilicate crowns with a simplified anatomy, especially in the occlusal portion, but the restoration performance is impaired when such adhesion is compromised. There is an increase in crown and cement stress concentration with the progressive loss of chemical bonding of the crown's walls.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of the thickness and type of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) material on the fatigue resistance and failure mode of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) restored with occlusal veneers (OV). MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-five (N = 75) ETT were restored with Herculite XRV in the endodontic access. Five experimental groups (n = 15) were tested. Four groups had two different thicknesses (0.6-0.7 mm or 1.4-1.6 mm) and two different CAD-CAM materials: zirconia-reinforced lithium-silicate (LS/Celtra Duo) and composite resin (RC/Cerasmart). The fifth group (control) did not have occlusal veneers. All the specimens were subjected to accelerated fatigue (5 Hz frequency) with an occlusal load increasing up to 1800 N and 131,000 cycles. The number of cycles was recorded when the machine stopped or at the completion of the test. Fatigue resistance was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier survival test (95% significance level, log-rank post hoc pairwise comparisons). The samples were categorized according to failure mode. The CAD-CAM materials were examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). RESULTS No differences were found between the thicknesses, regardless of the type of the CAD-CAM material. The thick LS OV outperformed the RC and control groups. The thin RC OV and control groups showed a higher percentage of repairable and possibly repairable failures than the other groups. LS was more homogeneous under SEM, and the EDS analysis detected Si and Zr, but not Li. CONCLUSIONS A larger thickness did not improve the resistance of the CAD-CAM materials. Thick LS showed a higher cumulative survival rate to fatigue than the RC and control groups. The direct composite alone (control) survived similarly to the experimental groups, except for the thick LS.

Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the influence of adhesive luting on the fatigue mechanical properties of simplified lithium disilicate crowns luted to dentin analogues preparations, and to compare two different approaches of simulation of a non-adhesive luting procedure. To this end, 30 prosthetic preparations of glass fiber-filled epoxy resin used as dentin analogues were milled and lithium disilicate crowns were pressed (1.5 mm thickness), which were allocated into three different groups: resin cement (RC), resin cement isolated by paraffin oil (RCI) and zinc phosphate cement (ZP). For luting procedures, the ceramic crowns of the RC and RCI groups had their internal surface treated with 5% hydrofluoric acid and universal primer. Afterwards, a thin layer of paraffin oil was applied onto the ceramic crown intaglio surface in the RCI group. The dentin analogues were treated with 10% hydrofluoric acid, followed by primer application and luting as recommended by the manufacturer. No previous surface treatments were performed for the ZP group, and the cement was applied as recommended. The fatigue test was run under cyclic fatigue (load 400-2000 N, step-size 100 N, 15,000 cycles/step, frequency 20 Hz) until failure detection (radial crack) by transillumination. The fatigue failure load (FFL), number of cycles until failure (CFF), and survival rate in each testing step were recorded. The RC group presented a higher FFL, CFF and survival rate compared to the other groups (p < 0.001), which were statistically equal to each other (p > 0.05). Weibull analysis detected no difference between groups for the Weibull module. Therefore, loss of adhesion between the evaluated substrates induces a significant reduction in load-bearing capacity under fatigue of the lithium disilicate crowns, strengthening the strong-importance of long-lasting adhesion for crown's survival. In addition, different methods for the simulation of non-adhesive conditions induce the same performance in the explored outcomes, confirming that both are valid approaches for laboratory studies.

Abstract
Objectives:
The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between anterior open bite (AOB) malocclusion and digestion by evaluating mastication and gastric emptying (GE) of a solid meal.
Material and Methods:
We recruited 26 female participants and divided them into two groups according to their occlusion status: The control group with normal occlusion (n = 11; age: 25.2 ± 2.8 years; and body mass index [BMI]: 21.1 ± 1.9 kg/m2) and the AOB group with AOB malocclusion (n = 15; age: 23.2 ± 5.5 years; BMI: 21.0 ± 1.6 kg/m2). GE, chewing, and occlusion were assessed simultaneously. A food questionnaire survey was also administered on the same day.
Results:
A significant positive correlation was noted between open bite and the occlusal analysis findings. Negative correlations were found between the food questionnaire score and both the open bite and occlusal analysis findings, which confirmed that AOB affects mastication. However, no significant difference in the GE rate parameters was observed between the two groups.
Conclusion:
Adaptive mechanisms may have a compensatory effect on the GE rate. However, the lack of tooth contact in the anterior occlusal region resulted in reduced masticatory ability. Orthodontic treatment should thus be considered, regardless of the presence of digestive problems, to improve mastication.

Abstract
Background Previous masticatory studies have focused on a variety of measurements of foods and boluses or kinematic parameters and sound during mastication. To date, the masticatory sound research of has been limited due to the difficulties of sound collection and accurate analysis. Therefore, significant progress in masticatory sound has not been made. Meanwhile, the correlation between acoustic parameters and mastication performance remains unclear. For the purpose of exploring the acoustic parameters in measuring mastication performance, the bone-conduction techniques and sound analysis were used, and a statistical analysis of acoustic and occlusal parameters were conducted. Methods The gnathosonic and chewing sounds of fifty-six volunteers with healthy dentate were recorded by a bone-conduction microphone and further analyzed by Praat 5.4.04 when intercuspally occluding natural foods (peanuts) were consumed. The granulometry of the expectorated boluses from the peanuts was characterized by the median particle size of the whole chewing sequence (D50a) and the median particle size during the fixed chewing strokes (D50b). The chewing time of the whole chewing sequence (CTa), the chewing time of the fixed chewing strokes (CTb), the chewing cycles (CC), and the chewing frequency (CF) were recorded and analyzed by the acoustic software. The acoustic parameters, including gnathosonic pitch, gnathosonic intensity, mastication sound pitch of the whole chewing sequence (MPa), mastication sound pitch of the fixed chewing strokes (MPb), mastication sound intensity of the whole chewing sequence (MIa) and mastication sound intensity of the fixed chewing strokes (MIb), were analyzed. Independent sample t-test, Spearman and Pearson correlation analyses were used where applicable. Results Significant difference in parameters CC, MIa, CF and D50a were found by sex (t-test, p < 0.01). The masticatory degree of the test foods was higher in women (CC, 24.25 ± 5.23; CF, 1.70 ± 0.21 s−1; D50a, 1655.07 ± 346.21 μm) than in men (CC, 18.14 ± 6.38; CF, 1.48 ± 0.18 s−1; D50a, 2159.21 ± 441.26 μm). In the whole chewing sequence study, a highly negative correlation was found between MIa and D50a, and a highly positive correlation was found between MIa and CF (r = − 0.94, r = 0.82, respectively, p < 0.01). No significant correlation was found between the remaining acoustic parameters and mastication parameters. In the fixed chewing strokes study, a highly negative correlation was found between MIb and D50b (r = − 0.85, p < 0.01). There was no significant correlation between the rest of the acoustic parameters and the mastication parameters. Conclusions Mastication sound intensity may be a valuable indicator for assessing mastication. Acoustic analysis can provide a more convenient and quick method of assessing mastication performance. Abstract
Bite force measurement is an important parameter when checking the function and integrity of the masticatory system, whereas it is currently very difficult to measure bite force during functional movement. Hence, the purpose of this study is to explore the potential technique and device for the measurement and intervention of the continuous bite forces on functional and dynamic occlusal condition. A portable biosensor by sandwich technique was designed, and the validity, reliability, and sensitivity were determined by mechanical pressure loading tests; meanwhile, the pressure signal is acquired by, and transmitted to, voltage changes by the electrical measurements of the sensors. The result is that, when the mechanical stress detection device is thicker than 3.5 mm, it shows relatively ideal mechanical properties; however, when the thickness is less than 3.0 mm, there is a risk of cracking. Mechanical stress changing and voltage variation had a regularity and positive relationship in this study. The mechanical stress-measuring device made by medical and industrial cross has a good application prospect for the measurement of bite force during function.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine a reference value for masticatory performance (MP) by measuring the amount of glucose extracted(AGE) from chewing gummy jelly. METHODS A total of 237 young adults (young group, 20-39 years), 147 middle-aged adults (middle-aged group, 40-59 years), and 177 older adults (old group, 60-87 years) participated in this study. All participants had natural dentition, excluding the third molars. AGE was measured when the participant chewed gummy jelly and used as a parameter of MP. AGE was compared among the three groups. Next, AGE in each group was compared between the habitual chewing side and non-habitual chewing side, and between males and females. The correlation between age and AGE was also investigated. RESULTS AGE in the young, middle, and old groups were similar, and no significant differences were observed. AGE was significantly higher in the habitual chewing side compared to the non-habitual chewing side, and in males than that in females. No significant correlations were found between age and AGE. AGE in the habitual chewing side of all ages was 221.9 ± 34.4 mg/dL for males and 206.0 ± 28.7 mg/dL for females. The mean-2SD (standard deviation) value representing the reference value of healthy adults was 153.1 mg/dL for males and 148.6 mg/dL for females, which was close to 150 mg/dL. CONCLUSION It was concluded that the reference value of masticatory performance as measured by the amount of glucose extraction after chewing gummy jelly was 150 mg/dL.

Abstract
A thin endocrown restoration was often applied in endodontically treated teeth with vertical bite height loss or inadequate clinical crown length. A model of mandibular molars made by endocrown restoration with 1 mm thickness and 2 mm depth of pulp chamber was constructed and imported into FEA ANSYS v18.0 software. The three CAD/CAM materials, feldspathic (Mark2), lithium disilicate (EMAX), and lava ultimate (LU), were assigned, and the five load indenters were loaded on the full occlusal (FO), occlusal center (OC), central fossa (CF), buccal groove (BG), and mesiobuccal cusp (MC) of restoration in the model. The MinPS and MaxPS of the thin endocrown were significantly higher than those of tooth tissue in five types of loads except for the LU endocrown loaded in the FO group. The smaller the contact surface of the load was, the higher MaxPS and MinPS were. MaxPS and MinPS of the MC were the highest, followed by the BG and CF in the restoration. In the stress distribution of tooth tissue, MaxPS in the LU endocrown accumulated at the external edge of enamel and was significantly higher than MaxPS in Mark2 and EMAX endocrown concentrated on the chamber wall of dentin under OC, CF and BG loads. Within the limitations of this FEA study, the LU endocrown transferred more stress to tooth tissue than Mark2 and EMAX, and the maximum principal stress on endocrown restoration and tooth tissue at the mesiobuccal cusp load was higher than that at the central fossa and buccal groove load.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether orthodontically treated patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) possess a different masticatory function than those of untreated patients with normal occlusion. DESIGN Occlusal contact area, occlusal force, as well as masseter and anterior temporal muscular activity were measured during maximum voluntary clenching (MVC) tests. Mandibular left and right lateral movements during mastication were also assessed. To further elucidate the nature of masticatory function, especially to determine the rate of abnormal jaw movement patterns, a parametric error index (EI) was set. Finally, masticatory efficiency was evaluated with a glucose sensitive measuring device. PARTICIPANTS Fifteen patients with CLP who had previously completed the orthodontic treatments required to achieve an acceptable and more harmonious occlusion accepted to volunteer in this study along with 21 untreated patients who already possessed a normal occlusion. RESULTS Patients with CLP showed a significantly lower occlusal force, reduced occlusal contact area, and decreased masticatory efficiency as well as significantly higher EI value when compared with controls. However, there was no significant difference when analyzing muscle activity, although masticatory efficiency was significantly different between the 2 groups. Despite this result, the scores obtained by the patients with CLP in the masticatory efficiency tests were still in the normal range. CONCLUSIONS Orthodontic treatment for adult patients with CLP provides a satisfactory result for the patients' masticatory ability albeit significantly less ideal compared with untreated patients with normal occlusion.

Abstract
(1) Background: This study aimed to investigate maximum bite force (MBF) in elderly patients with natural full dentition (FD), patients rehabilitated with Traditional Complete Dentures (CD), with overdentures (IRO) and edentulous patients (ED). We also tested whether MBF changes are associated with gender, age of the patients and body mass index (BMI) as result of altered food; (2) Methods: Three hundred and sixty-eight geriatric patients were included. We studied two types of prostheses: (a) IRO with telescopic attachments. (b) CD (heat polymerized polymethyl methacrylate resin). The MBF was measured using a digital dynamometer with a bite fork; (3) Results: We found that MBF is higher in males than females, regardless of teeth presence or absence (p < 0.01). In patients with CD or IRO, there are no differences between males and females; prostheses improve MBF compared to edentulous patients (p < 0.0001) and this effect is greater with IRO prostheses (p < 0.0001); the chewing force of FD subjects remains greater (p < 0.0001); there are no differences among chewing strength based on different BMI categories, although FD subjects have a reduced incidence of obesity; there is a significant negative correlation between MBF and age (p = 0.038; R = 0.145), and no correlation between MBF and BMI; (4) Conclusions: This study showed that MBF improves more in patients using IRO prostheses, although not reaching the MBF of FD subjects. MBF does not correlate with BMI, although we found increased percentages of obesity in edentulous subjects or those with prostheses. Thus, old people wearing prostheses require special attention by a nutritionist to avoid risk of malnutrition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of resin-matrix ceramic material and thickness on reliability and stress distribution of occlusal veneers (OV). METHODS One hundred and twenty-six OV of a mandibular first molar were milled using a CAD/CAM system and allocated according to materials (resin nanoceramic (RNC) or polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN)) and thicknesses (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mm), totaling six groups (RNC0.5, RNC1, RNC1.5, PICN0.5, PICN1, and PICN1.5). Step-stress accelerated-life testing was performed (n = 21/group) with the load applied at the distobuccal cusp tip of the occlusal veneer until failure or suspension. The use level probability Weibull curves and reliability were calculated and plotted (90% CI). Finite element analysis evaluated the stress distribution according to maximum principal stress (σmax) on the restoration and maximum shear stress (τmax) on the cement layer. RESULTS There was no difference in the probability of survival for the estimated missions among the groups, except at 600 N in which the results were significantly lower to PICN1.5 (6%) compared to RNC1 (55%) and RNC1.5 (60%). The σmax values were higher for PICN (31.85-48.63 MPa) than RNC (30.78-33.09 MPa) in the same thicknesses. In addition, 0.5 mm groups concentrated more stress in the restoration (33.09-48.63 MPa) than 1.0 mm (31.11-35.36 MPa) and 1.5 mm (30.78-31.85 MPa) groups in the same material. SIGNIFICANCE Both resin-matrix ceramic materials seem up-and-coming restorative systems for occlusal veneers irrespective of the thicknesses as a consequence of the high reliability.

Abstract
The objectives of this in-vitro study were to investigate the influence of Deep Margin Elevation (DME) and the preparation design (cusp coverage) on the fracture strength and repairability of CAD/CAM manufactured lithium disilicate (LS2) restorations on molars. Sound extracted human molars (n = 60) were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 15) (inlay without DME (InoD); inlay with DME (IWD); onlay without DME (OnoD); onlay with DME (OnWD)). All samples were aged (1.2 × 106 cycles of 50N, 8000 cycles of 5-55 °C) followed by oblique static loading until fracture. Fracture strength was measured in Newton and the fracture analysis was performed using a (scanning electron) microscope. Data was statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA and contingency tables. DME did not affect the fracture strength of LS2 restorations to a statistically significant level (p = .15). Onlays were stronger compared to inlays (p = .00). DME and preparation design did not interact (p = .97). However, onlays with DME were significantly stronger than inlays without DME (p = .00). More repairable fractures were observed among inlays (p = .00). Catastrophic, crown-root fractures were more prevalent in onlays (p = .00). DME did not influence repairability of fractures or fracture types to a statistically significant level (p > .05). Within the limitations of this in-vitro study, DME did not statistical significantly affect the fracture strength, nor the fracture type or repairability of LS2 restorations in molars. Cusp coverage did increase the fracture strength. However, oblique forces necessary to fracture both inlays and onlays, either with or without DME, by far exceeded the bite forces that can be expected under physiological clinical conditions. Hence, both inlays and onlays are likely to be fracture resistant during clinical service.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The performance of endocrowns fabricated with different types of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this finite element analysis (FEA) and in vitro study was to compare and evaluate the stress distribution, failure probability, and fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with endocrowns from CAD-CAM milling blocks including ceramic, polymer-infiltrated ceramic (PICN), and composite resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS An endodontically treated first mandibular molar restored with an endocrown was modeled by using a CAD software program and imported into an FEA software program. The model was duplicated and received restorations made from CAD-CAM blocks: Vita Suprinity (VS), IPS e.max CAD (EMX), Vita Enamic (VE), Lava Ultimate (LU), and Grandio blocs (GR). Stress distributions under axial and oblique loading were analyzed. The Weibull function was combined with the FEA results to predict long-term failure probability. The mechanical failure behavior of endocrowns manufactured with these materials was tested by using a universal testing machine. Load-to-failure was recorded, and fractured specimens were subjected to fractography. The data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and the post hoc Tukey test (α=.05). RESULTS The models of GR and LU exhibited a more even stress distribution. The Weibull analysis revealed that 5 models performed in a similar manner under normal occlusal forces, while LU and VE models achieved the highest probabilities during clenching. The fracture loads of GR (3808 ±607 N) were significantly higher than those of other materials (P<.05). More favorable failure modes were observed in the GR and VE groups. Fractography showed a greater probability of compression curls and arrest lines in the endocrowns of VE, LU, and GR groups. CONCLUSIONS When restoring endodontically treated teeth, endocrown fabricated with composite resin exhibited a more uniform stress distribution and higher fracture resistance. More evidence from long-term clinical studies is needed to verify this effect.

Abstract
Ontogenetic changes in the human masticatory complex suggest that bite force, a key measure of chewing performance, increases throughout growth and development. Current published bite force values for humans exist for molar and incisal biting, but few studies measure bite forces across all tooth types, or measure bite force potentials in subjects of different ages. In the absence of live data, models of bite force such as the Constrained Lever Model (CLM), are employed to predict bite force at different bite points for adults, but it is unclear whether such a model can accurately predict bite force potentials for juveniles or subadults. This study compares theoretically derived bite forces and live bite force data, and places these within an ontogenetic context in humans. Specifically, we test whether (1) patterns of maximum bite force increase along the tooth row throughout ontogeny, (2) bite force patterns estimated using the CLM match patterns observed from live bite force data, and (3) changes in bite forces along the tooth row and throughout ontogeny are associated with concomitant changes in adductor muscle leverage. Our findings show that maximum bite forces increase throughout ontogeny and change along the tooth row, with the highest forces occurring at the posterior dentition. These findings adhere to the expectations under the CLM and validate the model's utility in predicting bite force values throughout development. Furthermore, adductor muscle leverage values reflect this pattern, with the greatest leverage values occurring at the posterior dentition throughout ontogeny. The CLM informs our study of mammalian chewing mechanics by providing a model of how morphological changes of the masticatory apparatus during ontogeny affect bite force distribution along the tooth row. Furthermore, the decreased bite force magnitudes observed in juveniles and subadults compared with adults suggest that differences in juvenile and subadult diets may partially be due to differences in bite force production potentials.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The mechanical behavior of ceramic endocrowns is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro and 3-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of endodontically treated teeth restored with ceramic endocrowns made by using different computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty mandibular human molars were endodontically treated, prepared for endocrowns, and divided into 4 groups (n=15) according to the following various ceramic systems: leucite-based glass-ceramic (LC group), lithium disilicate-based glass-ceramic (LD group), glass-ceramic based on zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (LSZ group), and monolithic zirconia (ZR group). After adhesive bonding, the specimens were subjected to thermomechanical loading and then to fracture resistance testing in a universal testing machine. The failure mode of the specimens was qualitatively evaluated. Three-dimensional FEA was performed to evaluate the stress distribution in each group. Data were analyzed by using a 1-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). RESULTS Statistically significant differences among the groups were observed (P<.05). The outcomes of the LC, LD, and LSZ groups were similar (1178 N, 1935 N, and 1859 N) but different from those of the ZR group (6333 N). The LC and LD groups had a higher ratio of restorable failures, while LSZ and ZR had more nonrestorable failures. Fractographic analysis indicated a regular failure pattern in the ZR group and irregular failure patterns in the other groups. Three-dimensional FEA revealed similar values and stress pattern distributions among the groups. CONCLUSIONS The mechanical performance of monolithic zirconia was better than that of the other ceramic endocrowns considered in this research; however, monolithic zirconia presented a higher rate of catastrophic tooth structure failure.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to link parameters describing oral physiology and anatomy of consumers varying in age, gender and ethnicity to food oral processing behavior. Three groups of healthy consumers were compared: Dutch, Caucasian adults (18-30 yrs, n =32), Chinese, Asian adults (18-30 yrs, n =32) and Dutch, Caucasian older adults (65-85 yrs, n =32). Mastication performance, salivary flow rate (stimulated and unstimulated) and dental status were quantified to characterize oral physiology. Volume of oral cavity, tongue dimensions, facial anthropometry, height and weight were quantified to characterize anatomy. Oral processing behavior of three solid foods (carrot, cheese and sausage) was quantified by video recordings and eating rate (g/s), average consumption time (s), chews per bite (-) and average bite size (g) were determined. Dutch, Caucasian older adults had smaller volume of oral cavity, lower number of teeth and larger head width compared to Dutch, Caucasian adults. Chinese, Asian adults showed significantly higher mastication performance and larger head width compared to Dutch, Caucasian consumers, while dental status did not significantly differ between groups. Males had significantly larger volumes of oral cavity and larger head height and width compared to females. Dutch, Caucasian adults had a shorter average consumption time (s), less chews per bite and consumed the three foods with higher eating rate (g/s) compared to Dutch, Caucasian older adults. Chinese, Asian adults had a significantly longer average consumption time (s), more chews per bite, smaller average bite size (g) and lower eating rate (g/s) compared to Dutch, Caucasian adults. Twenty-one significant relationships were found between oral physiological and anatomical parameters and oral processing behavior. Body weight resulted in the largest β-values, indicating to be the anatomical parameter of largest influence on oral processing behavior. We conclude that only few oral physiological and anatomical parameters related with food oral processing behavior. We suggest that other factors, including cultural factors contribute to variation in food oral processing behavior between different consumer groups more than saliva flow, volume of oral cavity, mastication performance and dental status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To study the effect of water storage (3 months) on the creep deformation and recovery of CAD/CAM composite materials to determine their viscoelastic stability. MATERIALS AND METHODS Five CAD/CAM composite blocks, with increasing filler loading, and one polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) were studied. Six specimens of each material were separated into two groups (n=3) according to their storage conditions (24 h dry storage at 23°C versus 3 months storage in 37°C distilled water). A constant static compressive stress of 20 MPa was applied on each specimen via a loading pin for 2 h followed by unloading and monitoring strain recovery for a further period of 2 h. The maximum creep-strain (%) and permanent set (%) were recorded. Data were analysed via two-way ANOVA followed by one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests (<0.05) for comparisons between the materials. Homogeneity of variance was calculated via Levene's statistics. RESULTS The maximum creep strain after 24 h dry ranged from 0.45% to 1.09% and increased after 3-month storage in distilled water to between 0.71% and 1.85%. The permanent set after 24 h dry storage ranged from 0.033% to 0.15% and increased after 3-month water storage to between 0.087% and 0.18%. The maximum creep strain also reduced with increasing filler loading. SIGNIFICANCE The PICN material exhibited superior dimensional stability to all of the pre-cured resin composite blocks in both storage conditions with deformation being predominantly elastic rather than viscoelastic. Notwithstanding, two of the resin-matrix composite blocks approached the PICN performance, when dry, but less so after water storage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the fatigue failure load via staircase approach and stress distribution via FEA of different ceramic configurations arranged in multilayers composed of ceramic materials with different elastic moduli and compare them to monolayer models. METHODS CAD-CAM ceramic blocks were used to shape 0.3mm and 1.5mm thick discs, corresponding to: feldspathic (F), 64GPa; lithium disilicate (L), 95GPa; and Yttrium-partially stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) (Y), 209.3GPa. The 0.3mm discs were arranged in 4 layers cemented with resin cement (Multilink N), and the 1.5mm discs were not treated, in such a way that the final thickness of all specimens was 1.5mm (±0.15mm). The following 6 groups were tested: F (F: monolithic); L (L: monolithic); LLFF (L+L+F+F); FFLL (F+F+L+L); YLFF (Y+L+F+F); YLLF (Y+L+L+F). The loads-to-fracture were obtained using the biaxial flexural strength test until failure and the data were run using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons (α=0.05) tests. The biaxial bending test was also simulated through finite element analysis (FEA) to identify the tensile stress generated at each layer of the groups. Mean fatigue failure load (100,000 cycles; 20Hz) was determined using the staircase approach. The fracture analysis was performed by stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The load to fracture (N) were obtained as follows: L (592.9±73.8)D>FFLL (319.78±43.59)C>YLLF (246.75±24.89)B>F (167.13±9.84)A>YLFF (166.51±15.24)A>LLFF (165.46±22.75)A; and the fatigue failure load (N): L (310.92±26.73)F>FFLL (190.17±8.32)E>F (106.21±2.81)D>YLLF (96.48±5.73)C>YLFF (89.56±2.38)B>LLFF (77.23±6.33)A. The origin of all of the tested specimens was located at the tensile region of the discs, as encountered in FEA. SIGNIFICANCE The material under tensile stress is determinant for the restoration's strength and the adhesive interface negatively influenced the mechanical behavior of the multilayer structures.

Abstract
The aim was to evaluate, in vitro, the influence of different computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials (IPS e.max CAD, Vita Enamic, and Lava Ultimate) and thicknesses (0.6 mm and 1.5 mm) on the fracture resistance of occlusal veneers. Sixty human third molars were prepared to simulate advanced erosion of the occlusal surface, and the teeth were randomly divided into six experimental groups (n=10) according to the material and thickness used to build the veneers. Ten sound teeth formed the control group. The veneers were adhesively luted and submitted to mechanical cyclic loading (1 million cycles at 200-N load). The fracture resistance test was performed in a universal testing machine. The failures were classified as "reparable" and "irreparable." According to two-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test, the interaction (material × thickness) was significant ( p=0.013). The highest fracture resistance was obtained for IPS e.max CAD at a 1.5-mm thickness (4995 N) and was significantly higher compared to the other experimental groups ( p<0.05). The lowest fracture resistance was obtained for Vita Enamic at 0.6 mm (2973 N), although this resistance was not significantly different from those for IPS e.max CAD at 0.6 mm (3067 N), Lava Ultimate at 0.6 mm (3384 N), Vita Enamic at 1.5 mm (3540 N), and Lava Ultimate at 1.5 mm (3584 N) ( p>0.05). The experimental groups did not differ significantly from the sound teeth (3991 N) ( p>0.05). The failures were predominantly repairable. The occlusal veneers of IPS e.max CAD, Vita Enamic, and Lava Ultimate, with thicknesses of 0.6 mm and 1.5 mm, obtained fracture resistances similar to those associated with sound teeth.

Abstract
The measured metabolizable energy (ME) of whole almonds has been shown to be less than predicted by Atwater factors. However, data are lacking on the effects of processing (roasting, chopping or grinding) on the ME of almonds. A 5-period randomized, crossover study in healthy individuals (n = 18) was conducted to measure the ME of different forms of almonds (42 g per day), as part of a controlled diet: whole, natural almonds; whole, roasted almonds; chopped almonds; almond butter; and control (0 g per day). After 9 days of adaptation to each diet, participants collected all urine and fecal samples for 9 days. Diets, urine, and feces were analyzed to determine ME. Fracture force and fracture properties of whole and chopped almonds were measured. Measured ME (kcal g-1) of whole natural almonds (4.42), whole roasted almonds (4.86), and chopped almonds (5.04) was significantly lower than predicted with Atwater factors (P < 0.001); ME of almond butter (6.53 kcal g-1) was similar to predicted (P = 0.08). The ME of whole roasted and chopped almonds was lower than almond butter (P < 0.0001). ME of whole natural almonds was lower than whole roasted almonds (P < 0.05). This may be due to lower hardness of whole roasted (298 ± 1.3 N) compared to whole natural almonds (345 ± 1.6 N) (P < 0.05), and to whole natural almonds fracturing into fewer, larger particles, thus inhibiting the release of lipids. Atwater factors overestimate the ME of whole (natural and roasted) and chopped almonds. The amount of calories absorbed from almonds is dependent on the form in which they are consumed.

Abstract
Alveolar bone remodelling is vital for the success of dental implants and orthodontic treatments. However, the underlying biomechanical mechanisms, in particular the function of the periodontal ligament (PDL) in bone loading and remodelling, are not well understood. The PDL is a soft fibrous connective tissue that joins the tooth root to the alveolar bone and plays a critical role in the transmission of loads from the tooth to the surrounding bone. However, due to its complex structure, small size and location within the tooth socket it is difficult to study in vivo. Finite element analysis (FEA) is an ideal tool with which to investigate the role of the PDL, however inclusion of the PDL in FE models is complex and time consuming, therefore consideration must be given to how it is included. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of including the PDL and its fibrous structure in mandibular finite element models. A high-resolution model of a human molar region was created from micro-computed tomography scans. This is the first time that the fibrous structure of the PDL has been included in a model with realistic tooth and bone geometry. The results show that omission of the PDL creates a more rigid model, reducing the strains observed in the mandibular corpus which are of interest when considering mandibular functional morphology. How the PDL is modelled also affects the strains. The inclusion of PDL fibres alters the strains in the mandibular bone, increasing the strains in the tooth socket compared to PDL modelled without fibres. As strains in the alveolar bone are thought to play a key role in bone remodelling during orthodontic tooth movement, future FE analyses aimed at improving our understanding and management of orthodontic treatment should include the fibrous structure of the PDL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in pain and muscle force, and the relationship between them, in patients with muscle pain and bruxism, prior to and after treatment. METHODS Thirty women with bruxism and myofascial pain (Ia) were included in this study. Sleep bruxism diagnosis was made based on clinical diagnostic criteria, and awake bruxism diagnosis was made by patient questionnaires and the presence of tooth wear. The diagnosis of myofascial pain was established according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC-TMD). Dentulous or partially edentulous patients (rehabilitated with conventional fixed prostheses) were included in the study according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The pain treatment protocol included occlusal splints, patient education, and physiotherapy for 30days. Bite force was measured using a dynamometer at the central incisor and the first molar regions on both sides. The exams were performed at baseline, after 7days, and 30days after treatment. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare patient pain level response among the periods analyzed in the study. Bite force data were submitted to two-way repeated-measures ANOVA, followed by the Tukey HSD test (p<0.05). A simple regression analysis was performed to verify the relation between pain level and bite force. RESULTS Results revealed that there was a statistical difference in pain level over time for both muscles and sides (p<0.01). In the molar region, the bite force exhibited significantly higher values after 30days of treatment, when compared with the baseline (p<0.001). There was a correlation between pain level and bite force only for the temporal muscle in all periods analyzed (p<0.05). There was no strong correlation in the response level points to support the association of pain and bite force. CONCLUSIONS Pain level decreased and bite force increased in the molar region after treatment. No strong correlation or dispersion in the relationship between pain levels and bite force was seen in women with myofascial pain and bruxism.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the resistance to axial forces of screw-retained monolithic high translucency zirconia (mHTZr) crowns compared with high translucency zirconia + feldspathic ceramic (HTZrC) crowns, low translucency zirconia + feldspathic ceramic (LTZrC) crowns, and metal-ceramic (MC) crowns, and also to observe the different fracture patterns between all groups. METHODS Twenty-four crowns were fabricated (6 of each group) and loaded until failure, using a testing machine with a 5.0-kN load cell. RESULTS Mean fracture results varied between 1092.7 N (LTZrC group) and 3439.7 N (mHTZr group). No statistically significant differences were found between the HTZrC, LTZrC, and MC groups. However, statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) were found between mHTZr and the other 3 groups. In the MC group, only chipping of the ceramic veneering occurred. In the mHTZr group, when fracturing occurred, it was of the whole structure. Finally, the LTZrC and HTZrC groups suffered both chipping and core fractures. CONCLUSION High translucency monolithic zirconia implant-supported crowns proved to be the toughest group studied when an axial force was applied. Fracture patterns varied between different materials, chipping being the most common occurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Because of the many possibilities for endodontically restoring the posterior teeth and the high prevalence of restoration failures, this topic continues to be of major concern. A composite resin (CR) restoration reinforced by a horizontal fiberglass post may improve the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. The authors investigated this possibility by comparing the fracture resistance of molars restored with direct techniques with that of molars restored with indirect techniques. METHODS The authors divided 50 extracted sound third molars into 5 groups: sound teeth, onlay (ON), inlay (IN), direct CR, and transfixed fiberglass post (TFP) plus direct CR. The authors performed standardized mesio-occlusodistal cavity preparations and endodontic treatments. The authors cemented indirect restorations of Lava Ultimate (3M ESPE) adhesively in the ON and IN groups. The authors restored CR group teeth directly with Filtek Z230 XT (3M ESPE). In the TFP group, the authors transfixed 2 fiberglass posts horizontally and restored the teeth directly with CR. Thereafter, the authors submitted the teeth to cyclic fatigue loading with 500,000 cycles at 200 newtons. The authors tested fracture resistance in newtons in a universal testing machine. The authors analyzed data with 1-way analysis of variance and a Tukey test (P < .05). RESULTS Sound teeth had the highest fracture resistance. ON had the highest recovery of resistance, followed by TFP. CR had the lowest recovery, which was similar to that of IN. CONCLUSIONS Endodontically treated molars restored with TFP plus CR had fracture resistance similar to those restored with ON, which was higher than that for IN or CR only. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Horizontal TFPs placed inside a composite restoration had the same performance as did ON restorations.

Abstract
This study evaluated the bite force, electromyographic activity, and mandibular mobility in patients undergoing surgery for facial fracture treatment that required a coronal approach. Ten men were divided into two groups: group I, coronal approach with pre-auricular extension (n=4, average age 34.5 years); group II, coronal approach (n=6, average age 24.8 years). The maximum bite force was measured using a dynamometer and mandibular mobility using a calliper. The electromyographic activity of the right masseter (RM), left masseter (LM), right temporal (RT), and left temporal (LT) muscles was evaluated using a Myosystem-Br1 apparatus. Patients were evaluated at 1, 2, 3, and 6 months after surgery. Data were analysed using the repeated measures test (SPSS 21.0; P≤0.05). Statistically significant differences were found for electromyographic activity at rest (group II: LM P=0.00), left laterality (group I: RT P=0.02; group II: RT P=0.04), and maximum voluntary contraction (group I: RM P=0.04 and RT P=0.04; group II: RM P=0.05, LM P=0.00, and LT P=0.01 and for maximum molar bite force in the right (group I, P=0.00; group II, P=0.01) and left (group II, P=0.01) molar regions. The subjects regained electromyographic activity, maximum bite force, and mandibular mobility throughout the period evaluated.

Abstract
Purpose Stress distribution and mandible distortion during lateral movements are known to be closely linked to bruxism, dental implant placement, and temporomandibular joint disorder. The present study was performed to determine stress distribution and distortion patterns of the mandible during lateral movements in Class I, II, and III relationships. Methods Five Korean volunteers (one normal, two Class II, and two Class III occlusion cases) were selected. Finite element (FE) modeling was performed using information from cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scans of the subjects’ skulls, scanned images of dental casts, and incisor movement captured by an optical motion-capture system. Results In the Class I and II cases, maximum stress load occurred at the condyle of the balancing side, but, in the Class III cases, the maximum stress was loaded on the condyle of the working side. Maximum distortion was observed on the menton at the midline in every case, regardless of loading force. The distortion was greatest in Class III cases and smallest in Class II cases. Conclusions The stress distribution along and accompanying distortion of a mandible seems to be affected by the anteroposterior position of the mandible. Additionally, 3-D modeling of the craniofacial skeleton using CBCT and an optical laser scanner and reproduction of mandibular movement by way of the optical motion-capture technique used in this study are reliable techniques for investigating the masticatory system.

Abstract
Background Dental biomechanics based on finite element (FE) analysis is attracting enormous interest in dentistry, biology, anthropology and palaeontology. Nonetheless, several shortcomings in FE modeling exist, mainly due to unrealistic loading conditions. In this contribution we used kinematics information recorded in a virtual environment derived from occlusal contact detection between high resolution models of an upper and lower human first molar pair (M1 and M1, respectively) to run a non-linear dynamic FE crash colliding test. Methodology MicroCT image data of a modern human skull were segmented to reconstruct digital models of the antagonistic right M1 and M1 and the dental supporting structures. We used the Occlusal Fingerprint Analyser software to reconstruct the individual occlusal pathway trajectory during the power stroke of the chewing cycle, which was applied in a FE simulation to guide the M1 3D-path for the crash colliding test. Results FE analysis results showed that the stress pattern changes considerably during the power stroke, demonstrating that knowledge about chewing kinematics in conjunction with a morphologically detailed FE model is crucial for understanding tooth form and function under physiological conditions. Conclusions/Significance Results from such advanced dynamic approaches will be applicable to evaluate and avoid mechanical failure in prosthodontics/endodontic treatments, and to test material behavior for modern tooth restoration in dentistry. This approach will also allow us to improve our knowledge in chewing-related biomechanics for functional diagnosis and therapy, and it will help paleoanthropologists to illuminate dental adaptive processes and morphological modifications in human evolution.

Abstract
Guidelines for post placement are lacking in respect of the amount of tooth structure, particularly in cases in which ≥50% of coronal structure is preserved. The aim of this review was to provide evidence-based principles for the use of posts in the restoration of root filled teeth with limited tissue loss. A literature search of laboratory and clinical studies published between 2000 and 2014 was conducted in PubMed. Included studies contained at least one study group with root filled teeth restored without a post, presented at least one group with root filled teeth with limited tissue loss, and, in the case of laboratory studies, performed mechanical cycling prior to a fracture resistance test. Based on the evidence from laboratory studies, root filled premolars and molars with limited tissue loss can be restored without posts, particularly when total coverage is planned. However, when no cusp protection is provided, post placement appears to be beneficial in premolars. Evidence regarding the best restoration option for root filled incisors with limited tissue loss remains controversial. When total coverage is intended, reconstruction seems to be successfully performed by restoration with composite. However, some reports consider that post insertion increases fracture loads. The review of clinical studies demonstrated that survival of teeth with substantial tooth tissue is not influenced by the use of posts. Exceptions were found when only premolars were investigated; in these cases, post placement was associated with greater survival rates in crowned teeth and fewer root fractures in teeth without cusp protection.

Abstract
Patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) often complain and have limitation in masticatory function, which can be affected by a complex interaction of factors. The aim of this study was analyze the masticatory function in patients with TMD using surface electromyography (EMG) and masticatory efficiency (ME). Twenty-seven patients with TMD and 25 considered control (n), aged between 18 and 60 years, paired by age and gender, were evaluated according to RDC/TMD. In both groups were performed: EMG with chewing gum, clinical evaluation of habitual chewing with stuffed cookie (CE) (number of chewing strokes and time) and analysis of ME with fuchsin beads. Nonparametric statistical analyses were used (Mann-Whitney) for comparisons between groups, with 5% significance level. For all variables, the TMD group showed higher values than the control, with statistical significance for ME (p<0.0001), number of chewing strokes (p=0.04), chewing time (p=0.009), right masseter EMG activity (p=0.05), left masseter (p=0.005), right anterior temporal (p=0.05) and left anterior temporal (p=0.001). The conclusion is that patients with TMD showed changed chewing pattern, but without impairment of masticatory function.
