Abstract
BACKGROUND Sodium Benzoate (SB) is used in daily products such as drinks, juices, sauces, oils, ketchup, toothpaste, mouthwashes, cosmetics, dentifrices, and pharmaceutical products. However, SB has been implicated in gonadotoxicity even at a dosage within the safe limit. Zinc (Zn), on the other hand, has been shown to improve various fertility indices. Hence, this study was designed to explore the possible ameliorative effect of Zn on SB-induced testicular toxicity. METHODS Animals were randomly divided into control, SB, Zn, and SB+Zn. All treatment lasted for 28 days. RESULTS SB treatment caused a derangement in reproductive hormone levels, sperm function, and kinematics and a down-regulation of the Androgen receptor (ANDR). Also, a decrease in testicular levels of SOD, CAT, GSH, Nrf2, and HO- 1 activity and an increase in IL-1β, TNF-α, Nf-κB, and Caspase 3 were observed. These SB-induced distortions were ameliorated in SB-treated rats exposed to Zn. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that zinc abates SB-induced testicular toxicity by modulating Nrf2/HO-1/ Nf-κB signaling and ANDR upregulation.

Abstract
Tripterygium glycosides (TG) can seriously damage male reproductive function, and the reproductive system is difficult to restore after stopping the administration of TG in male rats. Zinc (Zn) is one of the most important trace elements in the human body and plays an important role in maintaining male fertility. The aim of this study was to investigate whether zinc supplementation could improve the testicular reproductive damage induced by TG toxicity in rats and to investigate its mechanism of action. The results showed that zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) could improve testicular tissue structure and semen parameters, promote testosterone synthesis, increase zinc-containing enzyme activity, increase zinc concentration in serum and testicular tissues, and maintain zinc homeostasis in male rats induced by TG toxicity. Zinc supplementation activated relevant signalling molecules in the KEAP1-NRF2/ARE pathway and alleviated TG-induced oxidative stress. Therefore, this study concluded that zinc supplementation could improve reproductive damage by regulating zinc homeostasis and the expression of genes related to oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The prospective association between dietary zinc (Zn) intake and cognitive decline remains uncertain. We aimed to assess the relationship of dietary Zn intake with the risk of cognitive decline in the Chinese older people, and examine the possible effect modifiers on this association. METHODS A total of 3,106 older Chinese adults aged 55 years or older from China Health and Nutrition Survey were included. Dietary nutrients intake information was collected by combined 24-h dietary recalls with weighing food inventory. The cognitive decline was defined as the 5-year decline rate in global and composite cognitive scores, based on a subset of items from the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-modified. RESULTS The median follow-up duration was 5.9 years. There was an L-shaped association between dietary Zn intake and the 5-year decline rates in global and composite cognitive scores, with an inflection point at 8.8 mg/day of dietary Zn. For the composite cognitive scores, compared with the first quantile (<7.9 mg/day) of dietary Zn intake, quantiles 2-6 (≥7.9 mg/day) had a significantly slower cognitive decline rate (β: -0.24; 95% confidence interval: -0.40 to -0.07). Similar results were found for the global cognitive scores. Moreover, the inverse association between dietary Zn intake and cognitive decline in composite cognitive scores was significantly stronger in those with lower levels of physical activity (P-interactions = 0.041). CONCLUSION Dietary Zn intake was negatively associated with cognitive decline in the older people. Maintaining appropriate dietary Zn levels may prevent cognitive decline.

Abstract
Obesity has been linked to cognitive decline and adverse effects on brain health. Zinc (Zn) is a mineral with important metabolic functions that can modulate obesity-related neurological impairment. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 12 weeks of Zn supplementation on the inflammatory profile, cognitive function, and mood of overweight or obese women through a double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The study included 42 women aged between 40 and 60, randomly divided into two groups: Zn supplementation (30 mg/day) or placebo for 12 weeks. Data regarding sociodemographic, anthropometric, dietary, and physical activity were collected. Mini-mental state examination (MMSE), verbal fluency test, clock drawing test, and Stroop test were performed. Anxiety and depression symptoms were assessed using the Beck anxiety inventory and the BDI-II, respectively. Saliva samples were collected to evaluate IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, insulin, nitrite, and Zn levels. Of the 42 participants (mean age 49.58 ± 6.46 years), 32 were included in the study analyses. Changes in body weight and macronutrient consumption were not different between placebo and Zn supplementation groups. Cognitive scores on the MMSE and Stroop tests were higher in the Zn supplementation group than in the placebo group. Salivary levels of IL-1b and Zn increased in the Zn group compared to placebo. There was no significant change in the adjusted means of the BDI-II and BECK scores between the zinc vs. placebo groups. Twelve weeks of Zn supplementation was able to partially improve the cognitive scores assessed in overweight or obese women, regardless of weight loss. These findings suggest that Zn supplementation can be considered an adjunct strategy to enhance cognitive health in overweight or obese women.
