Bioactive polysaccharide from edible Dictyophora spp.: Extraction, purification, structural features and bioactivities

Effect of hot-air drying processing on the volatile organic compounds and maillard precursors of Dictyophora Rubrovalvata based on GC-IMS, HPLC and LC-MS

The dynamic changes in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), reducing sugars, and amino acids of Dictyophora rubrovalvata (DR) at various drying temperatures were analyzed using GC-IMS, HPLC, and LC-MS. Orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) combined with VOCs indicated that drying temperature of 80 °C was optimal. Variable importance in the projection (VIP) and relative odor activity value (ROAV) were employed to identify 22 key VOCs. The findings suggested that esters played a predominant role among the VOCs. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that serine (Ser), glutamine (Gln), lysine (Lys), alanine (Ala), threonine (Thr), glutamic acid (Glu), asparagine (Asn), ribose, and glucose were closely associated with the formation of esters, aldehydes, ketones, pyrimidines, and pyrazines. In conclusion, this study laid a foundational theory for elucidating the characteristics aroma substances and their production pathways, providing a valuable reference for analysing the flavor characteristics of DR.

Isolation, structures, bioactivities, and utilizations of polysaccharides from Dictyophora species: A review

Dictyophora species is an edible and medicinal fungus belonging to the Basidiomycotina, Gasteromycetes, Phallales, family Phallaceae, and genus Dictyophora, which is popular with consumers in China and across various Asian regions. Polysaccharides from Dictyophora species (DPs) are important bioactive macromolecules with multiple health benefits, according to published studies, including anti-tumor, antioxidative, anti-obesity, anti-hyperlipidemic, hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, regulation of gut microbiota, antibacterial, renoprotective, and other pharmacological effects. Based on their rich pharmacological activities, the preparation techniques, structural characteristics and pharmacological activities of DPs have been extensively studied. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no dedicated review to shed light on recent advances in DPs. Therefore, in order to fill this gap, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the research on DPs, including the latest advances in extraction, isolation and purification, structural characteristics, pharmacological properties, safety assessment and potential utilizations, which will provide a theoretical basis for the research and development of subsequent DPs-related products.

Unearthing the therapeutic benefits of culinary-medicinal mushrooms for humans: Emerging sustainable bioresources of 21st century

Global interest in mushroom farming techniques has grown in the last few years. Despite not making up a large amount of the human diet at the moment, the nutritional worth of mushrooms has prompted their usage. The three main segments of the global mushroom industry are wild, culinary (edible), and medicinal mushrooms. The quality food that mushrooms provide can be utilized to build agricultural ecosystems that are more sustainable for increasing productivity and enhancing the effectiveness of resource usage. This is mostly because mushrooms can be utilized for the recycling of biomass and remains from crop production. Culinary-medicinal mushrooms are becoming more and more important because of their nutrient density, dietary value, and health advantages. Given its many bioactive components, which include polysaccharides, proteins, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and secondary metabolites, mushrooms have been utilized extensively as health foods. These mushrooms exhibit pharmacological activities and possess prebiotic and antibacterial capabilities. This review provides information on the latest advancements in the sustainable cultivation of mushrooms, particularly with nontraditional substrates, and their potential therapeutic uses. Furthermore, some of the newest developments and difficulties in the production of mushrooms are explored.

Isolation, structural characterization and immunomodulatory activity on RAW264.7 cells of a novel exopolysaccharide of Dictyophora rubrovalvata

Fungal polysaccharides have been explored by many for both structural studies and biological activities, but few studies have been done on the extracellular polysaccharides of Dictyophora rubrovalvata, so a new exopolysaccharide was isolated from Dictyophora rubrovalvata and its structure and its immunological activity were investigated. The crude exopolysaccharide (EPS) was purified by DEAE52 cellulose and Sephadex G-200 to obtain a new acidic polysaccharide (DR-EPS). DR-EPS (2.66 × 103 kDa) was consisted mainly of mannose, glucose, galactose and glucuronic acid with a molar ratio of 1: 0.86: 0.20: 0.01. In addition, DR-EPS increased the phagocytic activity of RAW264.7 cells up to 2.67 times of the blank control group. DR-EPS improved intracellular nucleic acid and glycogen metabolism as observed by AO and PAS staining. DR-EPS(40 μg/mL) promoted NO production up to 30.66 μmol, enhanced acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, with activity maxima of 660 U/gprot and 96.27 U/mgprot, respectively, and DR-EPS (160 μg / mL) significantly increased the lysozyme content as 2.73 times of the control group. The good immunological activity of extracellular polysaccharides of Dictyophora rubrovalvata provides directions for the use of fermentation broths.

Effects of different fractions of polysaccharides from Dictyophora indusiata on high-fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome in mice

Dictyophora indusiata is a common edible mushroom with great potential in the field of medicine against metabolic disorders, inflammation, and immunodeficiency. Our previous studies have shown that different fractions of the polysaccharide from Dictyophora indusiata (DIP) have various structural characteristics and morphology. However, the impact of the structural features on the protective effects of DIP against metabolic syndrome remains unclear. In this study, three distinct polysaccharide fractions have been extracted from Dictyophora indusiata and a high-fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS) was constructed in mice. The effects of these fractions on a range of MetS-associated endpoints, including abnormal blood glucose, lipid profiles, body fat content, liver function, intestinal microbiota and their metabolites were investigated. Through correlation analysis, the potential link between the monosaccharide composition of the polysaccharides and their biological activities was determined. The study aimed to explore the potential mechanisms and ameliorative effects of these polysaccharide fractions on MetS, thereby providing statistical evidence for understanding the relationship between monosaccharides composition of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharides and their potential utility in treating metabolic disorders.

Ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction for enhancing antioxidant activity of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharides: The difference mechanisms between single and combined assisted extraction

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different extraction methods (hot water-assisted extraction (HWE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), and ultrasonic-microwave- assisted extraction (UAME)) on the yield, chemical structures and antioxidant activity of Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharides (DPs). The research results showed that UMAE treatment had greater degree of damage to the cell wall of DPs and better comprehensive antioxidant capacity. Different extraction methods had no obvious effect on the types of glycosidic bonds and sugar rings, similar chemical composition and monosaccharide composition, with different absolute molecular weight (Mw) and molecular conformation. In particular, DPs for UMAE method had the highest polysaccharides yield, which was related to the conformational stretching and degradation avoidance of DPs in the higher molecular weight components under the simultaneous action of microwave and ultrasonic. These findings suggest that the UMAE technology has good potential for modification and application of DPs in the functional food industry.

Regulation of Intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species Levels after the Development of Phallus rubrovolvatus Rot Disease Due to Trichoderma koningii Mycoparasitism

Phallus rubrovolvatus is a unique mushroom used for medicinal and dietary purposes in China. In recent years, however, the rot disease of P. rubrovolvatus has seriously affected its yield and quality, becoming an economically important threat. In this study, samples of symptomatic tissues were collected, isolated, and identified from five major P. rubrovolvatus production regions in Guizhou Province, China. Based on combined analyses of phylogenies (ITS and EF1-α), morphological characteristics and Koch's postulates, Trichoderma koningiopsis and Trichoderma koningii were identified as the pathogenic fungal species. Among these, T. koningii exhibited stronger pathogenicity than the other strains; thus, T. koningii was used as the test strain in the follow-up experiments. Upon co-culturing T. koningii with P. rubrovolvatus, the hyphae of the two species were intertwined, and the color of the P. rubrovolvatus hyphae changed from white to red. Moreover, T. koningii hyphae were wrapped around P. rubrovolvatus hyphae, leading to their shortening and convolution and ultimately inhibiting their growth due to wrinkling; T. koningii penetrated the entire basidiocarp tissue of P. rubrovolvatus, causing serious damage to the host basidiocarp cells. Further analyses revealed that T. koningii infection resulted in the swelling of basidiocarps and significantly enhanced the activity of defense-related enzymes, such as malondialdehyde, manganese peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase. These findings offer theoretical support for further research on the infection mechanisms of pathogenic fungi and the prevention of diseases caused by them.

Effect of Controlled Atmosphere Packaging on the Physiology and Quality of Fresh-Cut Dictyophora rubrovolvata

Dictyophora rubrovolvata is a typical edible fungus of Guizhou Province and is very popular due to its unique taste and texture. In this study, the effect of a controlled atmosphere (CA) on fresh-cut D. rubrovolvata shelf life was investigated. Firstly, this study addresses the influence of different O₂ concentrations (5%, 20%, 35%, 50%, 65%, 80%, or 95%) with N₂ balance on fresh-cut D. rubrovolvata quality while stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 7 d. Then, on the basis of the determined O₂ concentration (5%), CO₂ (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, or 20%) was involved and stored for 8 d at 4 ± 1 °C. Evaluations of physiology parameters, texture, browning degree, nutritional, umami, volatile components, and total colony numbers were determined in fresh-cut D. rubrovolvata. From the results of water migration, the sample of 5% O₂/5% CO₂/90% N₂ was closer to 0 d than other groups at 8 days. Meanwhile, the polyphenol oxidase (2.26 ± 0.07 U/(g·min)), and catalase activity (4.66 ± 0.08 U/(g·min·FW)) were superior to the samples of other treatment groups on the eighth day (3.04 ± 0.06 to 3.84 ± 0.10 U/(g·min), 4.02 ± 0.07 to 4.07 ± 0.07 U/(g·min·FW)). Therefore, we found that a gas environment with 5% O₂/5% CO₂/90% N₂ could ensure the membrane integrity, oxidation, and prevent the browning of fresh-cut D. rubrovolvata, thus better maintaining the physiological parameters. Meanwhile, it also maintained the samples' texture, color, nutritional value, and umami taste. Furthermore, it inhibited the increase in total colony numbers. The volatile components were closer to the initial level compared with other groups. The results indicate that fresh-cut D. rubrovolvata could maintain its shelf life and quality when stored in 5% O₂/5% CO₂/90% N₂ at 4 ± 1 °C.

Chemical Constituents of the Mushroom Dictyophora indusiata and Their Anti-Inflammatory Activities

As an edible and medicinal fungus, Dictyophora indusiata is well-known for its morphological elegance, distinctive taste, high nutritional value, and therapeutic properties. In this study, eighteen compounds (1-18) were isolated and identified from the ethanolic extract of D. indusiata; four (1-4) were previously undescribed. Their molecular structures and absolute configurations were determined via a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic data (1D/2D NMR, HRESIMS, ECD, and XRD). Seven isolated compounds were examined for their anti-inflammatory activities using an in vitro model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-simulated BV-2 microglial cells. Compound 3 displayed the strongest inhibitory effect on tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression, with an IC₅₀ value of 11.9 μM. Compound 16 exhibited the highest inhibitory activity on interleukin-6 (IL-6) production, with an IC₅₀ value of 13.53 μM. Compound 17 showed the most potent anti-inflammatory capacity by inhibiting the LPS-induced generation of nitric oxide (NO) (IC₅₀: 10.86 μM) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) (IC₅₀: 23.9 μM) and by significantly suppressing induced nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and phosphorylated nuclear factor-kappa B inhibitor-α (p-IκB-α) expression at concentrations of 5 μM and 20 μM, respectively (p < 0.01). The modes of interactions between the isolated compounds and the target inflammation-related proteins were investigated in a preliminary molecular docking study. These results provided insight into the chemodiversity and potential anti-inflammatory activities of metabolites with small molecular weights in the mushroom D. indusiata.

A Review of Development and Utilization for Edible Fungal Polysaccharides: Extraction, Chemical Characteristics, and Bioactivities

Edible fungi, commonly known as mushrooms, are precious medicinal and edible homologous gifts from nature to us. Because of their distinctive flavor and exceptional nutritional and medicinal value, they have been a frequent visitor to people’s dining tables and have become a hot star in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Edible fungal polysaccharides (EFPs) are an essential nutrient for edible fungi to exert bioactivity. They have attracted much attention because of their antioxidant, immunomodulatory, antitumor, hypoglycemic, and hypolipidemic bioactivities. As a result, EFPs have demonstrated outstanding potential over the past few decades in various disciplines, including molecular biology, immunology, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical chemistry. However, the complexity of EFPs and the significant impact of mushroom variety and extraction techniques on their bioactivities prevents a complete investigation of their biological features. Therefore, the authors of this paper thoroughly reviewed the comparison of different extraction methods of EFPs and their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, the molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and glycosidic bond type and backbone structure of EFPs are described in detail. Moreover, the in vitro and in vivo bioactivities of EFPs extracted by different methods and their potential regulatory mechanisms are summarized. These provide a valuable reference for improving the extraction process of EFPs and their production and development in the pharmaceutical field.

Influence of ultrasound assisted metal-free Fenton reaction on the structural characteristic and immunostimulatory activity of a β-D-glucan isolated from Dictyophora indusiata

The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of ultrasound assisted H₂O₂/ascorbic acid reaction on the structural characteristic and immunostimulatory activity of a β-D-glucan isolated from D. indusiata, so as to reveal its potential structure-immunostimulatory activity relationship. A purified β-D-glucan, named as DP, was quickly isolated from D. indusiata, and further identified as a 1,3-β-D-glucan with 1,6-β-D-Glcp as branched chains, which exhibited a rigid rod chain conformation in 0.9 % (w/v) of NaCl solution. Furthermore, results showed that the primary structure of DP was overall stable after the degradation by ultrasound assisted H₂O₂/ascorbic acid reaction. However, the molar mass and chain conformation of DP obviously changed. In addition, DP and its degraded products exerted remarkable immunostimulatory activity in vitro and in vivo, which could activate the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling pathway through toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). Indeed, the immunostimulatory activity of DP was closely-correlated to its molar mass and chain conformation. An appropriate degradation of molar mass could promote its immunostimulatory activity. While the transformation of chain conformation from rigid rod to random coil could cause the significant decrease of its immunostimulatory activity. These findings are beneficial to better understanding the structure-immunostimulatory activity relationship of β-D-glucans from edible mushrooms.

Intervention Study of Dictyophora Polysaccharides on Arsenic-Induced Liver Fibrosis in SD Rats

Long-term arsenic (As) exposure can cause liver injury, hepatic cirrhosis, and cancer. Meanwhile, Dictyophora polysaccharides (DIP) have excellent antioxidation, anti-inflammation, and immune protection effects. There are currently few reports on the protection effects of DIP on As-induced hepatotoxicity and its pharmacological value. Therefore, this study was aimed at elucidating the protection of DIP on As-induced hepatotoxicity and exploring its preventive role in antifibrosis. In our study, the SD rat As poisoning model was established by the feeding method to explore the influence of As exposure on liver fibrosis. Then, DIP treatment was applied to the rats with As-induced liver fibrosis, and the changes of serum biochemical indexes and liver tissue pathology were observed. And the expression of fibrosis-related proteins TGF-β1, CTGF, and α-SMA levels was then determined to explore the DIP intervention function. The results demonstrated that through reduced pathological changes of hepatic and increased serum AST, ALT, TP, ALB, and A/G levels, DIP ameliorated liver fibrosis induced by As as reflected. And the administration of DIP decreased the concentration of HA, LN, PCIII, CIV, TBIL, and DBIL. In addition, the synthesis of TGF-β1 inhibited by DIP might regulate the expression of CTGF and decrease the proliferation of fibrinogen and fibroblasts, which reduced the synthesis of fibroblasts to transform into myofibroblasts. And a decrease of myofibroblasts downregulated the expression of α-SMA, which affected the synthesis and precipitation of ECM and alleviated the liver fibrosis caused by exposure to As. In conclusion, based on the pathological changes of liver tissue, serum biochemical indexes, and related protein expression, DIP can improve the As-induced liver fibrosis in rats and has strong medicinal value.

Physicochemical and Biological Properties of Polysaccharides from Dictyophora indusiata Prepared by Different Extraction Techniques

In this study, different extraction techniques, including traditional hot water extraction (HWE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), pressurized assisted extraction (PAE), and ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), were used to extract Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharides (DFPs), and their physicochemical and biological properties were compared. Results revealed that extraction yields of D. indusiata polysaccharides prepared by different extraction techniques ranged from 5.62% to 6.48%. D. indusiata polysaccharides prepared by different extraction techniques possessed similar chemical compositions and monosaccharide compositions, while exhibited different molecular weights (M_w), apparent viscosities, and molar ratios of constituent monosaccharides. In particularly, D. indusiata polysaccharides prepared by HWE (DFP-H) had the highest M_w and apparent viscosity among all DFPs, while D. indusiata polysaccharides extracted by UAE (DFP-U) possessed the lowest M_w and apparent viscosity. In addition, the in vitro antioxidant effects of D. indusiata polysaccharides prepared by PAE (DFP-P) and DFP-U were significantly higher than that of others. Indeed, both DFP-P and DFP-H exhibited much higher in vitro binding properties, including fat, cholesterol, and bile acid binding properties, and lipase inhibitory effects than that of D. indusiata polysaccharides prepared by MAE (DFP-M) and DFP-U. These findings suggest that the PAE technique has good potential for the preparation of D. indusiata polysaccharides with desirable bioactivities for the application in the functional food industry.

Anti-Obesity Effect of Dictyophora indusiata Mushroom Polysaccharide (DIP) in High Fat Diet-Induced Obesity via Regulating Inflammatory Cascades and Intestinal Microbiome

Obesity is a multifactorial metabolic disorder characterized by low-grade chronic inflammation, hyper-permeability of the gut epithelium, and perturbation of the intestinal microbiome. Despite the numerous therapeutic efficacies of Dictyophora indusiata mushroom, its biological activity in alleviating obesity through regulation of the gut microbiota and inflammatory cascades remain obscure. Henceforth, we determined the modulatory impact of D. indusiata polysaccharide (DIP) in the high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mice model. The experimental subjects (BALB/C mice) were supplemented with chow diet (Control group), high-fat diet (HFD group), or HFD along with DIP at a low dose [HFD + DIP(L)] and high dose [HFD + DIP(H)]. Obesity-related parameters, including body weight gain, epididymal adipocyte size, fat accumulation, adipogenic markers, lipogenic markers, inflammatory associated markers, intestinal integrity, and intestinal microbiome, were elucidated. Our findings demonstrated that the oral administration of DIP at low dose partially and at high dose significantly reversed HFD-induced obesity parameters. Furthermore, the body weight, fat accumulation, adipocyte size, adipogenic and liver associated markers, glucose levels, inflammatory cytokines, and endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS) levels were reduced considerably. Moreover, the study revealed that DIP treatment reversed the dynamic alterations of the gut microbiome community by decreasing the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio. These findings led us to infer the therapeutic potential of DIP in alleviating HFD-induced obesity via regulating inflammatory cascades, modulating intestinal integrity and intestinal microbiome community.

Polysaccharides of mushroom Pleurotus spp.: New extraction techniques, biological activities and development of new technologies

The biodiversity of mushrooms Pleurotus spp. is impressive due to its complexity and diversity related to the composition of chemical structures such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins and secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids and betalains. Recent studies of polysaccharides and their structural elucidation have helped to direct research and development of technologies related to pharmacological action, production of bioactive foods and application of new, more sophisticated extraction tools. The diversity of bioactivities related to these biopolymers, their mechanisms and routes of action are constant focus of researches. The elucidation of bioactivities has helped to formulate new vaccines and targeted drugs. In this context, in terms of polysaccharides and the diversity of mushrooms Pleurotus spp., this review seeks to revisit the genus, making an updated approach on the recent discoveries of polysaccharides, new extraction techniques and bioactivities, emphasising on their mechanisms and routes in order to update the reader on the recent technologies related to these polymers.

Antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective properties of alkali- and enzyme-extractable polysaccharides by Dictyophora indusiata

Hyperlipidemia, a very common disease throughout the world, usually gives rise to severe liver damages. The current experiment was to investigate the antihyperlipidemic and hepatoprotective properties of alkali- and enzyme-extractable Dictyophora indusiata polysaccharides (Al-DPS and En-DPS) on the hyperlipidemic mice. The results of animal experiment in vivo showed that treatment with Al-DPS or En-DPS could improve the excessive level of lipid profiles in serum and liver, as well as strengthen antioxidant status. In addition, the histopathological observations of liver testified that polysaccharides were capable of attenuating hepatic cell injury. The primary structural features of Al-DPS and En-DPS were demonstrated by HPGPC, HPLC, FT-IR and NMR. Glucose tolerance test manifested that polysaccharides were able to restrain the rise of blood sugar. The results indicated that Al-DPS and En-DPS may be considered as novel compounds to treat hyperlipidemia and also act as hepatoprotective agents.

Hypolipidemic effect of polysaccharides from Fortunella margarita (Lour.) Swingle in hyperlipidemic rats

The objective was to investigate the hypolipidemic effect of polysaccharides from Fortunellamargarita (Lour.) Swingle (FMPS) in hyperlipidemic rats and the comparative relationship between in vitro and in vivo. After FMPS feeding, the body weight, liver and spleen index of the hyperlipidemic rats decreased significantly, in a dose-dependent manner. The content of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and serum non-esterified fatty acid decreased, and high density lipoprotein, and serum lipase significantly increased after FMPS feeding in hyperlipidemic rats. Notably, high-dose FMPS, exhibited effective hypolipidemic activity, as compared with that of simvastatin. Moreover, histopathological micrographs of hepatic tissue and blood vessel morphology indicated that the fat deposition in liver cells decreased, and the vascular endothelial cells were protected by FMPS. Furthermore, the activities of superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase were enhanced, and the content of malondialdehyde was decreased by FMPS feeding in the hyperlipidemic rats. A concentration-dependent response was observed. Similarly to the hypolipidemic effect observed in vitro, the hypolipidemic effect of FMPS in hyperlipidemic rats was achieved by decreasing the lipid content and enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Thus, FMPS had a major role in regulating the lipid metabolism disorder in hyperlipidemic rats.

Quantitative Evaluation of Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of 1,3-β-glucans from Dictyophora indusiata Using an Improved Fluorometric Assay

In the present study, an improved fluorometric assay based on aniline blue dye for the specific, accurate, and rapid quantification of 1,3-β-glucans in edible mushrooms was developed and fully validated. Furthermore, the improved method was successfully applied for the quantitative evaluation of water soluble 1,3-β-glucans extracted from Dictyophora indusiata by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) with response surface methodology. Results showed that the improved method exhibited high specificity, accuracy, precision, repeatability, and stability, as well as a wide calibration range of 10-600 µg/mL (R2 > 99.9%). The maximum extraction yields of water soluble 1,3-β-glucans (1.20%) and total polysaccharides (5.41%) were achieved at the optimized extraction parameters as follows: ultrasound amplitude (56%), ultrasound extraction time (15 min), and ratio of liquid to raw material (22 mL/g). The results suggest that the improved fluorometric assay has great potential to be used as a routine method for the quantitative evaluation of 1,3-β-glucans in edible mushrooms and that the UAE method is effective for the extraction of 1,3-β-glucans from edible mushrooms.

Antioxidation, hepatic- and renal-protection of water-extractable polysaccharides by Dictyophora indusiata on obese mice

The present work aimed to investigate the antioxidation, hepatic- and renal-protection of water-extractable polysaccharides (WPS) by Dictyophora indusiata fruiting body on high-fat emulsion-induced obese mice. The structural analysis indicated that WPS was the α-configurational heteropolysaccharide with the major monosaccharides of mannose and glucose, and the polydispersity of 1.77. The in vivo results showed that WPS administration could improve obesity-associated hepatic and renal metabolic impairment, reduce body weight and ameliorate oxidative stress of liver and kidney by down-regulating serum enzyme activities and hepatic lipid levels, stabilizing serum lipid status, enhancing antioxidant abilities and decreasing insulin and leptin resistance. The in vitro experiments showed that WPS had potential abilities to scavenge free radicals. The conclusions demonstrated that WPS might be used as a salutary food and natural medicine for preventing obesity-associated damage and its complications.
