Recent advances of enzymatic reactions in ionic liquids

One-pot chemo- and photo-enzymatic linear cascade processes

The combination of chemo- and photocatalyses with biocatalysis, which couples the flexible reactivity of the photo- and chemocatalysts with the highly selective and environmentally friendly nature of enzymes in one-pot linear cascades, represents a powerful tool in organic synthesis. However, the combination of photo-, chemo- and biocatalysts in one-pot is challenging because the optimal operating conditions of the involved catalyst types may be rather different, and the different stabilities of catalysts and their mutual deactivation are additional problems often encountered in one-pot cascade processes. This review explores a large number of transformations and approaches adopted for combining enzymes and chemo- and photocatalytic processes in a successful way to achieve valuable chemicals and valorisation of biomass. Moreover, the strategies for solving incompatibility issues in chemo-enzymatic reactions are analysed, introducing recent examples of the application of non-conventional solvents, enzyme-metal hybrid catalysts, and spatial compartmentalization strategies to implement chemo-enzymatic cascade processes.

Effect of Mixture Composition on the Photophysics of Indoline Dyes in Imidazolium Ionic Liquid-Molecular Solvent Mixtures: A Femtosecond Transient Absorption Study

We conducted a study on the photophysics of three indoline dyes, D102, D149, and D205, in binary mixtures of ionic liquids (IL) and polar aprotic molecular solvents (MS). Specifically, we examined the behavior of these dyes in IL-MS mixtures containing four different imidazolium-based ILs and three different polar aprotic MSs. Our investigation involved several techniques, including stationary absorption and emission measurements, as well as femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Through our analysis, we discovered a peculiar behavior of several photophysical properties at low IL mole fractions (0 < XIL < 0.2). Indeed, in this range of mixture composition, the absorption maximum wavelength decreases noticeably, while the emission maximum wavelength and the Stokes shift, expressed in wavenumbers, reach a maximum. while a minimum occurs in the relative quantum yield and the excited state lifetime. These results indicate that the solvation of dye undergoes a large change in this range of mixture composition. We found that, at high ionic liquid content, the excited relaxation times are correlated with the high viscosity, while at low content, it is the polarity of the solvent that influences the behavior of the excited relaxation times. At a mixture composition of around 0.10, the behavior of the photophysical properties of the studied IL-MS mixtures indicates a crossover between situations where the solvation is dominated by that of ions and that dominated by the solvent.

Lipase-Catalyzed Strategies for the Preparation of Enantiomeric THIQ and THβC Derivatives: Green Aspects

This report reviews the most important lipase-catalyzed strategies for the preparation of pharmaceutically and chemically important tetrahydroisoquinoline and tetrahydro-β-carboline enantiomers through O-acylation of the primary hydroxy group, N-acylation of the secondary amino group, and COOEt hydrolysis of the corresponding racemic compounds with simple molecular structure, which have been reported during the last decade. A brief introduction describes the importance and synthesis of tetrahydroisoquinoline and tetrahydro-β-carboline derivatives, and it formulates the objectives of this compilation. The strategies are presented in chronological order, classified according to function of the reaction type, as kinetic and dynamic kinetic resolutions, in the main text. These reactions result in the desired products with excellent ee values. The pharmacological importance of the products together with their synthesis is given in the main text. The enzymatic hydrolysis of the hydrochloride salts as racemates of the starting amino carboxylic esters furnished the desired enantiomeric amino carboxylic acids quantitatively. The enzymatic reactions, performed in tBuOMe or H2O as usable solvents, and the transformations carried out in a continuous-flow system, indicate clear advantages, including atom economy, reproducibility, safer solvents, short reaction time, rapid heating and compression vs. shaker reactions. These features are highlighted in the main text.

Nanostructured supports for multienzyme co-immobilization for biotechnological applications: Achievements, challenges and prospects

The synergistic combination of current biotechnological and nanotechnological research has turned to multienzyme co-immobilization as a promising concept to design biocatalysis engineering. It has also intensified the development and deployment of multipurpose biocatalysts, for instance, multienzyme co-immobilized constructs, via biocatalysis/protein engineering to scale-up and fulfil the ever-increasing industrial demands. Considering the characteristic features of both the loaded multienzymes and nanostructure carriers, i.e., selectivity, specificity, stability, resistivity, induce activity, reaction efficacy, multi-usability, high catalytic turnover, optimal yield, ease in recovery, and cost-effectiveness, multienzyme-based green biocatalysts have become a powerful norm in biocatalysis/protein engineering sectors. In this context, the current state-of-the-art in enzyme engineering with a synergistic combination of nanotechnology, at large, and nanomaterials, in particular, are significantly contributing and providing robust tools to engineer and/or tailor enzymes to fulfil the growing catalytic and contemporary industrial needs. Considering the above critics and unique structural, physicochemical, and functional attributes, herein, we spotlight important aspects spanning across prospective nano-carriers for multienzyme co-immobilization. Further, this work comprehensively discuss the current advances in deploying multienzyme-based cascade reactions in numerous sectors, including environmental remediation and protection, drug delivery systems (DDS), biofuel cells development and energy production, bio-electroanalytical devices (biosensors), therapeutical, nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical oriented applications. In conclusion, the continuous developments in nano-assembling the multienzyme loaded co-immobilized nanostructure carriers would be a unique way that could act as a core of modern biotechnological research.

Efficient Antibacterial Dimeric Nitro Imidazolium Type of Ionic Liquids from a Simple Synthetic Approach

Synthesis of dimeric nitro-substituted imidazolium salts under the conventional/solvent-free method is reported. The solvent-free method is more important than the conventional one because of its shorter reaction time, higher yield from easily available starting material, environmental safety, and so forth. Counter anion exchange is carried out using inorganic salt, which is dissolved in deionized water at room temperature. In antibacterial studies, dimeric nitro-substituted imidazolium cations with bromide counter anions showed excellent inhibition against E. coli and P. aeruginosa bacteria. These experimental results were further supported by molecular docking studies. All the compounds (3-6) (a-d) showed excellent antibacterial activity than the standard drugs (gentamycin, nalidixic acid, oflaxacin, ciproflaxacin, and amikacin). Molecular docking studies showed strong hydrogen bonding, polar and hydrophobic interactions between the dimeric imidazolium salts, and Escherichia coli/Pseudomonas aeruginosa/Proteus vulgaris/Staphylococcus aureus receptors.

Gene Coexpression Connectivity Predicts Gene Targets Underlying High Ionic-Liquid Tolerance in Yarrowia lipolytica

Microbial tolerance to organic solvents such as ionic liquids (ILs) is a robust phenotype beneficial for novel biotransformation. While most microbes become inhibited in 1% to 5% (vol/vol) IL (e.g., 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate), we engineered a robust Yarrowia lipolytica strain (YlCW001) that tolerates a record high of 18% (vol/vol) IL via adaptive laboratory evolution. Yet, genotypes conferring high IL tolerance in YlCW001 remain to be discovered. In this study, we shed light on the underlying cellular processes that enable robust Y. lipolytica to thrive in inhibitory ILs. By using dynamic transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) data, we introduced Gene Coexpression Connectivity (GeCCo) as a metric to discover genotypes conferring desirable phenotypes that might not be found by the conventional differential expression (DE) approaches. GeCCo selects genes based on their number of coexpressed genes in a subnetwork of upregulated genes by the target phenotype. We experimentally validated GeCCo by reverse engineering a high-IL-tolerance phenotype in wild-type Y. lipolytica. We found that gene targets selected by both DE and GeCCo exhibited the best statistical chance at increasing IL tolerance when individually overexpressed. Remarkably, the best combination of dual-overexpression genes was genes selected by GeCCo alone. This nonintuitive combination of genes, BRN1 and OYE2, is involved in guiding/regulating mitotic cell division, chromatin segregation/condensation, microtubule and cytoskeletal organization, and Golgi vesicle transport.

IMPORTANCE Cellular robustness to cope with stressors is an important phenotype. Y. lipolytica is an industrial robust oleaginous yeast that has recently been discovered to tolerate record high concentrations of ILs, beneficial for novel biotransformation in organic solvents. However, genotypes that link to IL tolerance in Y. lipolytica are largely unknown. Due to the complex IL-tolerant phenotype, conventional gene discovery and validation based on differential gene expression approaches are time-consuming due to a large search space and might encounter a high false-discovery rate. Here, using the developed Gene Coexpression Connectivity (GeCCo) method, we identified and validated a subset of most promising gene targets conferring the IL-tolerant phenotypes and shed light on their potential mechanisms. We anticipate GeCCo being a useful method to discover the genotype-to-phenotype link.

Development of different pretreatments and related technologies for efficient biomass conversion of lignocellulose

Lignocellulose, a kind of biological resource widely existing in nature, which can be transformed into value-added biochemical products through saccharification, fermentation or chemical catalysis. Pretreatments are the necessary step to increase the accessibility and digestibility of lignocellulose. This paper comprehensively reviewed different pretreatment progress of lignocellulose in recent year, including mechanical/thermal, biological, inorganic solvent, organic solvent and unconventional physical-chemical pretreatments, focusing on quantifying the influence of pretreatments on subsequent biomass conversion. In addition, related pretreatment techniques such as genetic engineering, reactor configurations, downstream process and visualization technology of pretreatment were discussed. Finally, this review presented the challenge of lignocellulose pretreatment in the future.

Surface Interaction of Ionic Liquids: Stabilization of Polyethylene Terephthalate-Degrading Enzymes in Solution

The effect of aqueous solutions of selected ionic liquids solutions on Ideonella sakaiensis PETase with bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) substrate were studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations in order to identify the possible effect of ionic liquids on the structure and dynamics of enzymatic Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) hydrolysis. The use of specific ionic liquids can potentially enhance the enzymatic hydrolyses of PET where these ionic liquids are known to partially dissolve PET. The aqueous solution of cholinium phosphate were found to have the smallest effect of the structure of PETase, and its interaction with (BHET) as substrate was comparable to that with the pure water. Thus, the cholinium phosphate was identified as possible candidate as ionic liquid co-solvent to study the enzymatic hydrolyses of PET.

Enzymatic Synthesis of Polyesters and Their Bioapplications: Recent Advances and Perspectives

This article reviews the most important advances in the enzymatic synthesis of polyesters. In first place, the different processes of polyester enzymatic synthesis, i.e., polycondensation, ring opening, and chemoenzymatic polymerizations, and the key parameters affecting these reactions, such as enzyme, concentration, solvent, or temperature, are analyzed. Then, the latest articles on the preparation of polyesters either by direct synthesis or via modification are commented. Finally, the main bioapplications of enzymatically obtained polyesters, i.e., antimicrobial, drug delivery, or tissue engineering, are described. It is intended to point out the great advantages that enzymatic polymerization present to obtain polymers and the disadvantages found to develop applied materials.

Altering the Stereoselectivity of Whole-Cell Biotransformations via the Physicochemical Parameters Impacting the Processes

The enantioselective synthesis of organic compounds is one of the great challenges in organic synthetic chemistry due to its importance for the acquisition of biologically active derivatives, e.g., pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and others. This is why biological systems are increasingly applied as tools for chiral compounds synthesis or modification. The use of whole cells of “wild-type” microorganisms is one possible approach, especially as some methods allow improving the conversion degrees and controlling the stereoselectivity of the reaction without the need to introduce changes at the genetic level. Simple manipulation of the culture conditions, the form of a biocatalyst, or the appropriate composition of the biotransformation medium makes it possible to obtain optically pure products in a cheap, safe, and environmentally friendly manner. This review contains selected examples of the influence of physicochemical factors on the stereochemistry of the biocatalytic preparation of enantiomerically pure compounds, which is undertaken through kinetically controlled separation of their racemic mixtures or reduction of prochiral ketones and has an effect on the final enantiomeric purity and enantioselectivity of the reaction.

Renewable Biomass Utilization: A Way Forward to Establish Sustainable Chemical and Processing Industries

Lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks are promising alternatives to fossil fuels for meeting raw material needs of processing industries and helping transit from a linear to a circular economy and thereby meet the global sustainability criteria. The sugar platform route in the biochemical conversion process is one of the promising and extensively studied methods, which consists of four major conversion steps: pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, and product purification. Each of these conversion steps has multiple challenges. Among them, the challenges associated with the pretreatment are the most significant for the overall process because this is the most expensive step in the sugar platform route and it significantly affects the efficiency of all subsequent steps on the sustainable valorization of each biomass component. However, the development of a universal pretreatment method to cater to all types of feedstock is nearly impossible due to the substantial variations in compositions and structures of biopolymers among these feedstocks. In this review, we have discussed some promising pretreatment methods, their processing and chemicals requirements, and the effect of biomass composition on deconstruction efficiencies. In addition, the global biomass resources availability and process intensification ideas for the lignocellulosic-based chemical industry have been discussed from a circularity and sustainability standpoint.

What do we learn from enzyme behaviors in organic solvents? - Structural functionalization of ionic liquids for enzyme activation and stabilization

Enzyme activity in nonaqueous media (e.g. conventional organic solvents) is typically lower than in water by several orders of magnitude. There is a rising interest of developing new nonaqueous solvent systems that are more "water-like" and more biocompatible. Therefore, we need to learn from the current state of nonaqueous biocatalysis to overcome its bottleneck and provide guidance for new solvent design. This review firstly focuses on the discussion of how organic solvent properties (such as polarity and hydrophobicity) influence the enzyme activity and stability, and how these properties impact the enzyme's conformation and dynamics. While hydrophobic organic solvents usually lead to the maintenance of enzyme activity, solvents carrying functional groups like hydroxys and ethers (including crown ethers and cyclodextrins) can lead to enzyme activation. Ionic liquids (ILs) are designable solvents that can conveniently incorporate these functional groups. Therefore, we systematically survey these ether- and/or hydroxy-functionalized ILs, and find most of them are highly compatible with enzymes leading to high activity and stability. In particular, ILs carrying both ether and tert-alcohol groups are among the most enzyme-activating solvents. Future direction is to learn from enzyme behaviors in both water and nonaqueous media to design biocompatible "water-like" solvents.

Effect of ultrasonic-ionic liquid pretreatment on the hydrolysis degree and antigenicity of enzymatic hydrolysates from whey protein

With the aim to reduce the antigenicity of whey protein hydrolysate in milk, the pretreatment method of coupling ultrasonic and ionic liquid (US-IL) and further enzymatic treatments were studied. Papain and alcalase were found to be suitable for ultrasonic-ionic liquid pretreatment. After ultrasound-ionic liquid treatment, the antigenic decline rates of ALA and BLG upon alcalase hydrolysis were 82.82% and 88.01%, and that of the papain hydrolysis was 81.87% and 88.46%, respectively. Upon ultrasonic-ionic liquid pretreatment, the molecular weight of whey protein did not change significantly, but the small molecular weight proportion of components in the enzymatic hydrolysate obviously increased. The findings showed that combining with US-IL pretreatment for further protease hydrolysis of whey proteins, the hydrolysate can be used in order to produce hypoallergenic bovine whey proteins.

Mixing states of imidazolium-based ionic liquid, [C4mim][TFSI], with cycloethers studied by SANS, IR, and NMR experiments and MD simulations

The mixing states of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C₄mim][TFSI]), with cycloethers, tetrahydrofuran (THF), 1,4-dioxane (1,4-DIO), and 1,3-dioxane (1,3-DIO), have been clarified on the meso- and microscopic scales using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), IR, and NMR experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. SANS profiles of [C₄mim][TFSI]-THF-d₈ and -1,4-DIO-d₈ solutions at various mole fractions x_ML of molecular liquid (ML) have shown that [C₄mim][TFSI] is heterogeneously mixed with THF and 1,4-DIO on the mesoscopic scale, to a high extent in the case of the latter solution. In fact, [C₄mim][TFSI] and 1,4-DIO are not miscible with each other above the 1,4-DIO mole fraction x_1,4-DIO of 0.903, whereas the IL can be mixed with THF over the entire range of THF mole fraction x_THF. The results of IR and ¹H and ¹³C NMR measurements and MD simulations showed that cycloether molecules are more strongly hydrogen-bonded with the imidazolium ring H atoms in the order of THF > 1,3-DIO > 1,4-DIO. Although 1,4-DIO and 1,3-DIO molecules are structural isomers, our results point out that 1,4-DIO cannot be strongly hydrogen-bonded with the ring H atoms. The solvation of [TFSI]^- by cycloethers through the dipole-dipole interaction promotes hydrogen bonding between the ring H atoms and cycloethers. Thus, 1,4-DIO with the lowest dipole moment cannot easily eliminate [TFSI]^- from the imidazolium ring. This results in the weakest hydrogen bonds of 1,4-DIO with the ring H atoms. 2D-NMR of ¹H{¹H} rotating-frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (ROESY) showed the interaction of the three cycloethers with the butyl group of [C₄mim]⁺. 1,4-DIO mainly interacts with the butyl group by the dispersion force, whereas THF interacts with the IL by both hydrogen bonding and dispersion force. This leads to the higher heterogeneity of the 1,4-DIO solutions compared to the THF solutions.

An Overview on the Toxicological Properties of Ionic Liquids toward Microorganisms

Ionic liquids (ILs), a class of materials with unique physicochemical properties, have been used extensively in the fields of chemical engineering, biotechnology, material sciences, pharmaceutics, and many others. Because ILs are very polar by nature, they can migrate into the environment with the possibility of inclusion in the food chain and bioaccumulation in living organisms. However, the chemical natures of ILs are not quintessentially biocompatible. Therefore, the practical uses of ILs must be preceded by suitable toxicological assessments. Among different methods, the use of microorganisms to evaluate IL toxicity provides many advantages including short generation time, rapid growth, and environmental and industrial relevance. This article reviews the recent research progress on the toxicological properties of ILs toward microorganisms and highlights the computational prediction of various toxicity models.

Moderate halophilic bacteria, but not extreme halophilic archaea can alleviate the toxicity of short-alkyl side chain imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (IL) with short-alkyl side chain such as 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl) and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) has immense application potential including in lignocellulosic bioenergy production. But they are toxic to most microorganisms, and those isolated from different environments as IL-tolerant have salt tolerance capabilities. This study evaluates the relationship between salt and [Emim]Cl tolerance of microorganisms using different salinity sediments (2-19%) and brines (35%) of India's largest inland hypersaline lake, Sambhar in Rajasthan as the model system. While samples with 2% and 35% salinities do not yield any [Emim]Cl (100 mM) tolerant colonies, others have 6-50% colonies tolerant to the IL. Similar trend was observed with 50 mM [Bmim]Cl. Moderate halophilic isolates of genera Halomonas and Bacillus (growth in 0.7-3.0 M NaCl) isolated from the sediments could grow in as high as 375 mM [Emim]Cl, or 125 mM [Bmim]Cl facilitated by higher synthesis, and uptake of organic osmolytes; and up to 1.7-fold increased activity of active efflux pumps. [Bmim]Cl was more toxic than [Emim]Cl in all performed experiments. [Emim]Cl-adapted cells could trounce IL-induced stress. Interestingly, enrichment with 100 mM [Emim]Cl resulted in increase of IL-tolerant colonies in all sediments including the one with 2% salinity. However, the salt saturated brines (35%) do not yield any such colony even after repeated incubations. Extreme halophilic archaea, Natronomonas (growth in 3.0-4.0 M NaCl) isolated from such brines, were exceedingly sensitive to even 5 mM [Emim]Cl, or 1 mM [Bmim]Cl. Two additional extremophilic archaea, namely Haloferax and Haladaptatus were also sensitive to the tested ILs. Archaeal sensitivity is possibly due to the competitive interaction of [Emim]⁺ with their acidic proteome (15.4-17.5% aspartic and glutamic acids, against 10.7-12.9% in bacteria) that they maintain to stabilize the high amount of K⁺ ion accumulated by salt-in strategy. Thus, general salt adaptation strategies of moderate halophilic bacteria help them to restrain toxicity of these ILs, but extremophilic archaea are highly sensitive and demands meticulous use of these solvents to prevent environmental contamination.

Ionic Liquid-Based Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction to Analyze Seven Compounds in Psoralea Fructus Coupled with HPLC

Psoralea Fructus is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and the content of psoralen, isopsoralen, neobavaisoflavone, bavachin, psoralidin, isobavachalcone, and bavachinin A is the main quality control index of Psoralea Fructus because of its clinical effects. Thus, a fast and environmentally-benign extraction method of seven compounds in Psoralea Fructus is necessary. In this work, an ionic liquid-based ultrasonic-assisted method (ILUAE) for the extraction of seven compounds from Psoralea Fructus was proposed. Several ILs of different types and parameters, including the concentration of ILs, concentration of ethanol (EtOH), solid–liquid ratio, particle size, ultrasonic time, centrifugal speed, and ultrasonic power, were optimized by the Placket–Burman (PB) design and Box–Behnken response surface analysis. Under this optimal condition, the total extraction yield of the seven compounds in Psoralea Fructus was 18.90 mg/g, and significantly greater than the conventional 75% EtOH solvent extraction.

Enzymatic polymerization to polyesters in nonaqueous solvents

Aliphatic polyesters are thermoplastic and biodegradable polymers with promising potentials to substitute synthetic polymers derived from petrochemicals. In particular, polylactides (PLAs) and other polylactones can be renewable and biocompatible. A more benign approach for polyester synthesis is the enzymatic polycondensation or ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reactions, whose outcomes largely depend on the reaction conditions including solvents, water content and temperature. This chapter illustrates several examples of enzymatic polymerization to polyesters using various solvents (i.e., organic solvents, supercritical fluids, ionic liquids, and aqueous biphasic systems). Hydrophobic solvents containing little water tend to promote the enzymatic polymerization and lead to high molecular masses of polyesters. Since some enzymatic polymerization reactions are performed at high temperatures (such as ring-opening polymerization of lactide at >100°C), these processes demand solvents with high boiling points (such as many ionic liquids). Supercritical fluids (such as supercritical CO₂) can be "green" solvents, but their compatibility with enzymes and their practicability of scaling up remain as challenges. On the other hand, ionic liquids can be tailored to be compatible with enzymes and to have high thermal stability although the studies of their uses in enzymatic polycondensation and ROP reactions are still at an early stage.

Solvation Properties of Silver and Copper Ions in a Room Temperature Ionic Liquid: A First-Principles Study

Understanding the behavior of metal ions in room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) is essential for predicting and optimizing performance for technologies like metal electrodeposition; however, many mechanistic details remain enigmatic, including the solvation properties of the ions in ILs and how they are governed by the intrinsic interaction between the ions and the liquid species. Here, we utilize first-principles molecular dynamics simulations to unravel and compare the key structural properties of Ag⁺ and Cu⁺ ions in a common room temperature IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate. We find that, when compared to Cu⁺, the larger Ag⁺ shows a more disordered and flexible solvation structure with a more frequent exchange of the IL species between its solvation shells. In addition, our simulations reveal an interesting analog in the solvation behavior of the ions in the IL and aqueous environments, particularly in the effect of the ion electronic structures on their solvation properties. This work provides fundamental understanding of the intrinsic properties of the metal ions in the IL, while offering mechanistic understanding and strategy for future selection of ILs for metal electrodeposition processes.

Isolation of C-phycocyanin from Spirulina platensis microalga using Ionic liquid based aqueous two-phase system

An aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) with ionic liquids (ILs) was used for the isolate of C-phycocyanin (CPC) from Spirulina platensis microalga. Various imidazolium ILs and potassium salts were studied. The effect of ILs-ATPS on the extraction efficiency of CPC was also studied. The experimental parameters like pH, loading volume, algae concentration, temperature, and alkyl chain length of IL were well-covered in this report. The experimental results showed that the extraction efficiency, the partition coefficient, and the separation factor for CPC were 99%, 36.6, and 5.8, respectively, for an optimal pH value of 7 and a temperature of 308 K. The order of extraction efficiency for CPC using IL-ATPS was: 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C8MIM-Br) > 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C6MIM-Br) > 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C4MIM-Br). The isolation process followed the pseudo second-order kinetic model and the thermodynamic results were obviously spontaneous.

Small-angle X-ray scattering study on nano-scale structures controlled by water content in a binary water/ionic liquid system

We report the water-in-ionic-liquid microemulsions (ME) formed in a binary water/ionic liquid system, without organic solvents, using a surfactant ionic liquid (SAIL) based on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (C4mIm+) as the cation and dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT-) as the anion. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed that MEs were stably formed in the binary water/SAIL solutions in the low water content region (water volume fraction, φw < 0.1), and the ME size systematically increased with increasing φw. We further investigated the nanostructures of the high φw region using a combination of SAXS and rheological measurements and found that the MEs changed to a stacked lamellar structure comprising SAIL bilayers and water phases at φw > 0.12. At the largest water content, φw = 0.99, vesicle structures were obtained.
