A Critical Review of Biodegradable Zinc Alloys toward Clinical Applications

Biodegradable zinc (Zn) alloys stand out as promising contenders for biomedical applications due to their favorable mechanical properties and appropriate degradation rates, offering the potential to mitigate the risks and expenses associated with secondary surgeries. While current research predominantly centers on the in vitro examination of Zn alloys, notable disparities often emerge between in vivo and in vitro findings. Consequently, conducting in vivo investigations on Zn alloys holds paramount significance in advancing their clinical application. Different element compositions and processing methods decide the mechanical properties and biological performance of Zn alloys, thus affecting their suitability for specific medical applications. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of recent strides in the development of biodegradable Zn alloys, with a focus on key aspects such as mechanical properties, toxicity, animal experiments, biological properties, and molecular mechanisms. By summarizing these advancements, the paper aims to broaden the scope of research directions and enhance the understanding of the clinical applications of biodegradable Zn alloys.

Mechanical properties, corrosion and degradation behaviors, and in vitro cytocompatibility of a biodegradable Zn-5La alloy for bone-implant applications

Zinc (Zn) and its alloys are used in bone-fixation devices as biodegradable bone-implant materials due to their good biosafety, biological function, biodegradability, and formability. Unfortunately, the clinical application of pure Zn is hindered by its insufficient mechanical properties and slow degradation rate. In this study, a Zn-5 wt.% lanthanum (Zn-5La) alloy with enhanced mechanical properties, suitable degradation rate, and cytocompatibility was developed through La alloying and hot extrusion. The hot-extruded (HE) Zn-5La alloy showed ultimate tensile strength of 286.3 MPa, tensile yield strength of 139.7 MPa, elongation of 35.7%, compressive yield strength of 262.7 MPa, and microhardness of 109.7 HV. The corrosion resistance of the HE Zn-5La in Hanks' and Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) solutions gradually increased with prolonged immersion time. Further, the HE Zn-5La exhibited an electrochemical corrosion rate of 36.7 μm/y in Hanks' solution and 11.4 μm/y in DMEM solution, and a degradation rate of 49.5 μm/y in Hanks' solution and 30.3 μm/y in DMEM solution, after 30 d of immersion. The corrosion resistance of both HE Zn and Zn-5La in DMEM solution was higher than in Hanks' solution. The 25% concentration extract of the HE Zn-5La showed a cell viability of 106.5%, indicating no cytotoxicity toward MG-63 cells. We recommend the HE Zn-5La alloy as a promising candidate material for biodegradable bone-implant applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This work reports the mechanical properties, corrosion and degradation behaviors, in vitro cytocompatibility and antibacterial ability of biodegradable Zn-5La alloy for bone-implant applications. Our findings demonstrate that the hot-extruded (HE) Zn-5La alloy showed an ultimate tensile strength of 286.3 MPa, a yield strength of 139.7 MPa, an elongation of 35.7%, compressive yield strength of 262.7 MPa, and microhardness of 109.7 HV. HE Zn-5La exhibited appropriate degradation rates in Hanks' and DMEM solutions. Furthermore, the HE Zn-5La alloy showed good cytocompatibility toward MG-63 and MC3T3-E1 cells and greater antibacterial ability against S. aureus.

Fabrication and Properties of a Biodegradable Zn-Ca Composite

In recent years, Zn and its alloys have become some of the most promising degradable metals as in vivo implants due to their acceptable biocompatibility and more suitable degradation rate compared with Mg-based and Fe-based alloys. However, the degradation rate of Zn-based materials after implantation in the body for orthopedic applications is relatively slow, leading to long-term retention of the implants after fulfilling their missions. Moreover, the excessive release of Zn2+ during the degradation process of Zn-based implants usually leads to high cytotoxicity and delayed osseointegration. To provide a feasible solution to the problem faced by Zn-based implants, a Zn-Ca composite was fabricated by an air pressure infiltration method in this work. The XRD pattern of the composite suggests that the composite is fully composed of Zn-Ca intermetallic compounds. The degradation tests in vitro show that the composite has a much higher degradation rate than pure Zn, and the high Ca content regions in the composite can preferentially degrade as sacrificial anodes. In addition, the composite can efficiently induce Ca-P deposition during immersion tests in Hank's solution. Cytotoxicity tests indicate that L-929 cells exhibit around 82% cell viability (Grade 1) even after being cultured in the 100% extract prepared from the Zn-Ca composite for 1 day and show excellent cell viability.

Preparation and evaluation of a novel alginate-arginine-zinc ion hydrogel film for skin wound healing

In this paper, the mixed solution of sodium alginate (SA) and arginine (Arg) was dried into a film and then crosslinked with zinc ion to form sodium alginate-arginine-zinc ion (SA-Arg-Zn²⁺) hydrogel for skin wound dressings. SA-Arg-Zn²⁺ hydrogel had higher swelling ability, which was beneficial to absorbing wound exudate. Moreover, it exhibited antioxidant activity and strong inhibition against E. coli and S. aureus, and had no obvious cytotoxicity to NIH 3T3 fibroblasts. Compared with other dressings utilized in rat skin wound, SA-Arg-Zn²⁺ hydrogel showed better wound healing efficacy and the wound closure ratio reached to 100 % on the 14th day. The result of Elisa test indicated that SA-Arg-Zn²⁺ hydrogel down-regulated the expression of inflammatory factors (TNF-α and IL-6) and promoted the growth factor levels (VEGF and TGF-β₁). Furthermore, H&E staining results confirmed that SA-Arg-Zn²⁺ hydrogel could reduce wound inflammation and accelerate re-epithelialization, angiogenesis and wound healing. Therefore, SA-Arg-Zn²⁺ hydrogel is an effective and innovative wound dressing, moreover, the preparation technique is simple and feasible for industrial application.

Zinc-based subcuticular absorbable staples: An in vivo and in vitro study

A zinc-nutrient element alloy (Zn-1.0Cu-0.5Ca) was developed into subcuticular absorbable staples (SAS) as a robust alternative to the commercially available poly(l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) SAS for the first time. The fixation properties of the Zn SAS were measured via pull-out tests and in-situ lap-shear pull-out test comparatively against the PLGA SAS. The Zn SAS exhibited fixation force of 18.9±0.2 N, which was over three times higher than that of PLGA SAS (5.5±0.1 N). The Zn SAS was used to close incision wounds in a SD rat model for biodegradability and biocompatibility characterisation at 1, 4 and 12 weeks. The Zn SAS showed uniform degradation behaviour after in vivo implantation at the average rate of 198±54, 112±28, and 70±24 μm/y after 1, 4, and 12 weeks, which reduced the fixation force to 16.8±1.1 N, 15.4±0.9 N, 12.7±0.7 N, respectively. These findings showed the potential of the Zn SAS for the closure of heavy loading and slowing healing tissues. The Zn SAS enabled successful closure and healing of the incision wound, similar to the PLGA staples. However, the slow long-term degradation rate of the Zn SAS may lead to unnecessary implant retention. In addition, the alloy SAS resulted in higher local foreign body responses due to their stiffness. Reducing the implant cross-section profile and applying low stiffness and a corrosion-accelerating coating are suggested as possible approaches to reduce post-service implant retention and improve the biocompatibility of the Zn SAS. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This work reports the fabrication of the first metallic subcuticular absorbable staples (SAS) made from Zn-Cu-Ca alloy for skin wound closure applications. The Zn-based SAS were characterised in vitro and in vivo (SD rat model) for biodegradability, fixation properties, biocompatibility and inflammatory responses, which were compared against the commercially available PLGA-based SAS. The Zn-based SAS provided a secure attachment of the full-thickness wounds on SD rats and allowed successful healing during the 12-week service period. In addition, the in vitro results showed that the Zn-based SAS provided more than three times higher fixation strength than the commercial PLGA, indicating the potential of the Zn-based SAS for load-bearing wound closure application.

[Research status and development of biodegradable zinc alloy as orthopedics implant]

Znic (Zn) alloys with good cytocompatibility and suitable degradation rate have been a kind of biodegradable metal with great potential for clinical applications. This paper summarizes the biological role of degradable Zn alloy as bone implant materials, discusses the mechanical properties of different Zn alloys and their advantages and disadvantages as bone implant materials, and analyzes the influence of different processing strategies (such as alloying and additive manufacturing) on the mechanical properties of Zn alloys. This paper provides systematic design approaches for biodegradable Zn alloys as bone implant materials in terms of the material selection, product processing, structural topology optimization, and assesses their application prospects with a view to better serve the clinic.

Fabrication and Properties of Biodegradable Akermanite-Reinforced Fe35Mn Alloys for Temporary Orthopedic Implant Applications

As a representative of the biodegradable iron (Fe)-manganese (Mn) alloys, Fe35Mn has been investigated as a promising biodegradable metal biomaterial for orthopedic applications. However, its slow degradation rate, though better than pure Fe, and poor bioactivity are concerns that retard its clinical applications. Akermanite (Ca₂MgSi₂O₇, Ake) is a silicate-based bioceramic, showing desirable degradability and bioactivity for bone repair. In the present work, Fe35Mn/Ake composites were prepared via a powder metallurgy route. The effect of different contents of Ake (0, 10, 30, 50 vol %) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, degradation, and biocompatibility of the composites was investigated. The ceramic phases were found to be evenly distributed in the metal matrix. The Ake reacted with Fe35Mn and generated CaFeSiO₄ during sintering. The addition of Ake increased the relative density of pure Fe35Mn from ∼90 to ∼94-97%. The compressive yield strength (CYS) and elastic modulus (E_c) increased with increasing Ake, with Fe35Mn/50Ake exhibiting the highest CYS of ∼403 MPa and E_c of ∼18 GPa. However, the ductility decreased at higher Ake concentrations (30 and 50%). Microhardness also showed an increasing trend with the addition of Ake. Electrochemical measurements indicated that higher concentrations of Ake (30 and 50%) could potentially increase the corrosion rate of Fe35Mn from ∼0.25 to ∼0.39 mm/year. However, all of the compositions tested did not show measurable weight loss after immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 4 weeks, attributed to the use of prealloyed raw material, high sintered density of the fabricated composites, and the formation of a dense Ca-, P-, and O-rich layer on the surface. Human osteoblasts on Fe35Mn/Ake composites showed increasing viability with increasing Ake content, indicating improved in vitro biocompatibility. These preliminary results suggest that Fe35Mn/Ake can be a potential material for biodegradable bone implant applications, particularly Fe35Mn/30Ake, if the slow corrosion of the composite can be addressed.

Microstructures, mechanical and corrosion properties of graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced zinc matrix composites for implant applications

Zinc (Zn)-based alloys and composites are gaining increasing interest as promising biodegradable implant materials due to their appropriate biodegradation rates and biological functionalities. However, the inadequate mechanical strength and ductility of pure Zn have restricted its application. In this study, Zn matrix composites (ZMCs) reinforced with 0.1-0.4 wt.% graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) fabricated via powder metallurgy were investigated as potential biodegradable implant materials. The microstructures, mechanical properties, and corrosion behaviors of the GNP-reinforced ZMCs were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, compression testing, and electrochemical and immersion testing in Hanks' balanced salt solution (HBSS). The microstructural study revealed that the GNP was uniformly dispersed in the ZMCs after ball milling and sintering at 420°C for 6 h. The microhardness, compressive yield strength, ultimate compressive strength, and compressive strain of the ZMC-0.2GNP were 69 HV, 123 MPa, 247 MPa, and 23 %, respectively, improvements of ∼ 18 %, 50%, ∼ 28%, and ∼ 15% compared to pure Zn. The corrosion rate of the ZMCs were lower than that of the pure Zn in HBSS, and the ZMC-0.2GNP composite exhibited the lowest corrosion rate of 0.09 mm/y as measured by electrochemical testing. Biocompatibility assessment indicated that the diluted extracts of pure Zn and GNP-reinforced ZMCs with concentrations of 12.5% and 6.25% exhibited no cytotoxicity after cell culturing for up to 5 days, and the diluted extracts of ZMC-0.2 GNP composite revealed more than 90% cell viability after cell culturing of 3 days, showing the satisfying cytocompatibility. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biodegradable Zn is a promising candidate material for orthopedic implant applications. Nonetheless, the inadequate mechanical strength and ductility of pure Zn limited its clinical application. In this study, Zn matrix composites (ZMCs) reinforced with 0.1-0.4 wt.% graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were developed via powder metallurgy, and the reinforcing efficacy of GNP on their mechanical properties was investigated. The addition of GNP significantly improved the compressive properties of ZMCs, with the Zn-0.2GNP composite exhibiting the best compressive properties, including 123 MPa compressive yield strength, 247 MPa ultimate compressive strength, and 22.9% compressive strain. Further, the 12.5% concentration extract of the ZMCs exhibited no cytotoxicity after cell culturing for 5 d toward SaOS2 cells.

Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of Newly Developed Zn-Mg-CaO Composite

In this study, the Zn-0.8Mg-0.28CaO wt.% composite was successfully prepared using different conditions of ball milling (rotations and time) followed by a direct extrusion process. These materials were characterized from the point of view of microstructure and compressive properties, and the correlation between those characteristics was found. Microstructures of individual materials possessed differences in grain size, where the grain size decreased with the intensified conditions (milling speed and time). However, the mutual relation between grain size and compressive strength was not linear. This was caused by the effect of other factors, such as texture, intermetallic phases, and pores. Material texture affects the mechanical properties by a different activity ratio between basal and pyramidal <c + a> slips. The properties of intermetallic particles and pores were determined in material volume using micro-computed tomography (µCT), enhancing the precision of our assumptions compared with commonly applied methods. Based on that, and the analysis after the compressive tests, we were able to determine the influence of aspect ratio, feret diameters, and volume content of intermetallic phases and pores on mechanical behavior. The influence of the aspects on mechanical behavior is described and discussed.

An overview and critical assessment of the mechanisms of microstructural refinement during ultrasonic solidification of metals

A refined, equiaxed grain structure and the formation of finer primary intermetallic phases are some of the notable benefits of ultrasonic processing of liquid/solidifying melts. Ultrasonic treatment (UST) has been widely explored in Al and Mg-based alloys due to its operational versatility and scalability. During UST, the refinement of grain and primary intermetallic phases occurs via cavitation-induced fragmentation mechanisms. In addition, UST improves the efficiency (activation of particles) of the conventional grain refinement process when potent particles are added through master alloys. Though the UST's ability to produce refined as-cast structures is well recognized, the understanding of the refinement mechanisms is still debated and unresolved. Significant efforts have been devoted to understanding these mechanisms through the use of sophisticated techniques such as in-situ/ real-time observation, lab-scale and commercial-scale casting processes. All these studies aim to demonstrate the significance of cavitation, fragmentation modes, and alloy chemistry in microstructure refinement. Although the physical effects of cavitation and acoustic streaming (fluid flow) are primary factors influencing the refinement, the dominant grain refinement mechanisms are affected by several solidification variables and casting conditions. Some of these include melt volume, solute, cooling rate, potent particles, grain growth (equiaxed, columnar or dendritic), and the cold zones of the casting where the onset of nucleation occurs. This review aims to provide a better insight into solidification variables emphasizing the importance of cold zones in generating fine structures for small- and large-volume (direct chill) castings. Another important highlight of this review is to present the relatively less explored mechanism of (acoustic) vibration-induced crystallization and discuss the role of cavitation in achieving a refined ingot structure.

Effect of Cu and Mg addition on the mechanical and degradation properties of Zn alloy wires

In this study, Zn-xCu (-0.1 Mg) wires with a diameter of 0.3 mm were obtained by hot extrusion and cold drawing. The microstructures, mechanical properties, and degradation behaviour were investigated to evaluate their feasibility as biodegradable metals. During the drawing process of the Zn-xCu alloys, many granular CuZn5 phases were dynamically precipitated, and the grains were significantly refined, along with a significant work softening with the tensile strength decreasing and the elongation increasing (from 161 MPa to 92 MPa and 22%–103% for Zn-0.2Cu). With the increase of Cu additions, the phenomenon of work softening was more intense and there was an opposite trend in the strength changes between the as-extruded rods (increase) and as-drawn wires (decrease). With 0.1 wt.% Mg added, the stable rod-like Mg2Zn11 phase was formed in as-extruded Zn-xCu-0.1 Mg rods, which obviously improved the strength, and inhibited the dynamic precipitation of granular CuZn5 phase and work softening phenomenon in the drawing process (from 332 MPa to 313 MPa and 11%–46% for Zn-0.2Cu-0.1 Mg). In addition, due to the micro-galvanic effect induced by the precipitates, alloying accelerated the degradation of Zn alloy wires, especially Zn-1Cu-0.1 Mg, which was related to the shape, distribution, and potential of the phases.

In vivo performance of a rare earth free Mg–Zn–Ca alloy manufactured using twin roll casting for potential applications in the cranial and maxillofacial fixation devices

A magnesium alloy containing essential, non-toxic, biodegradable elements such as Ca and Zn has been fabricated using a novel twin-roll casting process (TRC). Microstructure, mechanical properties, in vivo corrosion and biocompatibility have been assessed and compared to the properties of the rare earth (RE) element containing WE43 alloy. TRC Mg-0.5 wt% Zn- 0.5 wt% Ca exhibited fine grains with an average grain size ranging from 70 to 150 μm. Mechanical properties of a TRC Mg-0.5Zn-0.5Ca alloy showed an ultimate tensile strength of 220 MPa and ductility of 9.3%. The TRC Mg-0.5Zn-0.5Ca alloy showed a degradation rate of 0.51 ± 0.07 mm/y similar to that of the WE43 alloy (0.47 ± 0.09 mm/y) in the rat model after 1 week of implantation. By week 4 the biodegradation rates of both alloys studied were lowered and stabilized with fewer gas pockets around the implant. The histological analysis shows that both WE43 and TRC Mg-0.5Zn-0.5Ca alloy triggered comparable tissue healing responses at respective times of implantation. The presence of more organized scarring tissue around the TRC Mg-0.5Zn-0.5Ca alloys suggests that the biodegradation of the RE-free alloy may be more conducive to the tissue proliferation and remodelling process.

In Vitro Degradability, Microstructural Evaluation, and Biocompatibility of Zn-Ti-Cu-Ca-P Alloy

According to the modern era, zinc is one of the best replacements for human bio-implants due to its acceptable degradation, nominal degradable rate, and biocompatibility. However, alloying zinc with other nutrient metals is mandatory to improve the mechanical properties. In this research, Zn-4Ti-4Cu was alloyed with calcium and phosphorous through a powder metallurgical process to make guided bone regeneration (GBR). First, the sintering temperature of the alloy was found with the usage of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Tensile and compression tests showed the suitability of the alloy in strength. The microstructural characteristics were provided with EDS and SEM. The different phases of the alloy were detected with X-ray diffraction (XRD). We can clearly depict the precipitates formed and the strengthening mechanism due to titanium addition. An electrochemical corrosion (ECM) test was carried out with simulated body fluid (Hank’s solution) as the electrolyte. Cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance properties were studied and discussed.

Influence of Copper on the Microstructural, Mechanical, and Biological Properties of Commercially Pure Zn-Based Alloys for a Potential Biodegradable Implant

Three Zn-based alloys (Zn1Cu, Zn2Cu, and Zn3Cu) were developed by the addition of Cu (1, 2, and 3 wt %) into commercially pure Zn. This report systematically investigates the potential for these newly developed Zn-based alloys as biodegradable materials. Microstructural studies reveal the presence of spherical-shaped nanosized precipitates of ε-CuZn₄ in the Zn1Cu alloy, whereas Zn2Cu and Zn3Cu alloys exhibit the presence of both micron- and nanosized precipitates of ε-CuZn₄. The mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile and compressive strengths improve significantly with an increase in the amount of Cu in the alloy. The Zn3Cu alloy exhibits the highest yield strength (225 ± 9 MPa) and ultimate tensile strength (330 ± 12 MPa) among all of the alloys, which are ∼2.7 and 2 times higher than those of pure Zn. In vitro degradation behavior is evaluated by the potentiodynamic polarization study and immersion testing in Hank's solution for 20 and 75 days. The corrosion rate after both polarization and immersion testing follows the order of pure Zn < Zn1Cu < Zn3Cu < Zn2Cu. An electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study also concludes that Zn2Cu shows the lowest corrosion resistance. The % cell viability values of 3T3 fibroblasts cells after 5 days of culture in a 50% diluted extract of pure Zn, Zn2Cu, and Zn3Cu alloys are 76 ± 0.024, 86.18 ± 0.033, and 92.9 ± 0.026%, respectively, establishing the improved cytocompatibility of the alloys as compared to pure Zn. Furthermore, an antibacterial study also reveals that the Zn3Cu alloy exhibits 80, 67, and 100% increases in the zone of inhibition (ZOI) for Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, respectively, as compared to that of pure Zn.

In Vitro Corrosion Behavior of Zn3Mg0.7Y Biodegradable Alloy in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF)

Biodegradable metallic materials represent a new class of biocompatible materials for medical applications based on numerous advantages. Among them, those based on zinc have a rate of degradation close to the healing period required by many clinical problems, which makes them more suitable than those based on magnesium or iron. The poor mechanical properties of Zn could be significantly improved by the addition of Mg and Y. In this research, we analyze the electro-chemical and mechanical behavior of a new alloy based on Zn3Mg0.7Y compared with pure Zn and Zn3Mg materials. Microstructure and chemical composition were investigated by electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The electrochemical corrosion was analyzed by linear polarization (LP), cyclic polarization (CP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). For hardness and scratch resistance, a microhardness tester and a scratch module were used. Findings revealed that the mechanical properties of Zn improved through the addition of Mg and Y. Zn, Zn-Mg and Zn-Mg-Y alloys in this study showed highly active behavior in SBF with uniform corrosion. Zinc metals and their alloys with magnesium and yttrium showed a moderate degradation rate and can be considered as promising biodegradable materials for orthopedic application.

Zinc-nutrient element based alloys for absorbable wound closure devices fabrication: Current status, challenges, and future prospects

The need for the development of load-bearing, absorbable wound closure devices is driving the research for novel materials that possess both good biodegradability and superior mechanical characteristics. Biodegradable metals (BMs), namely: magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe), which are currently being investigated for absorbable vascular stent and orthopaedic implant applications, are slowly gaining research interest for the fabrication of wound closure devices. The current review presents an overview of the traditional and novel BM-based intracutaneous and transcutaneous wound closure devices, and identifies Zn as a promising substitute for the traditional materials used in the fabrication of absorbable load-bearing sutures, internal staples, and subcuticular staples. In order to further strengthen Zn to be used in highly stressed situations, nutrient elements (NEs), including calcium (Ca), Mg, Fe, and copper (Cu), are identified as promising alloying elements for the strengthening of Zn-based wound closure device material that simultaneously provide potential therapeutic benefit to the wound healing process during implant biodegradation process. The influence of NEs on the fundamental characteristics of biodegradable Zn are reviewed and critically assessed with regard to the mechanical properties and biodegradability requirements of different wound closure devices. The opportunities and challenges in the development of Zn-based wound closure device materials are presented to inspire future research on this rapidly growing field.

Coaxially electrospun 5-fluorouracil-loaded PLGA/PVP fibrous membrane for skin tumor treatment

As a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) has been widely used as a carrier to achieve controlled drug delivery in various forms. Focusing on skin tumor treatment, herein 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was embedded into the core of coaxially electrospun PLGA fibers to get a drug-loaded core-shell fibrous membrane. In the coaxial electrospinning, poly(vinylpyrrolidone) was applied in the inner flow to facilitate the formation of the core-shell structured fibers. The morphology and micro-structure of the fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The influences of the molecular weights and chemical compositions of PLGA copolymers on the release behaviors were studied. The cytotoxicity of the fibers was characterized by cell proliferation and living-dead cell staining experiments. The results showed that faster release rates would be obtained if the copolymers were of lower molecular weights and higher fraction of glycidyl unit. All the prepared 5-FU loaded fibrous membranes were non-cytotoxic, suggesting their potential applications in skin tumor treatment.
